Master's Student: I have been working full time while in school full time to prepare for my future. Navigating my way through college has been a struggle at times due to being the first, first time college student in my family with having no one close to me to be able to answer the questions I have. Other then that i really enjoyed the challenges of college. This has not been an easy journey but I do believe it's been worth it. I received my high school diploma at a technical highschool then started my college journey at a community college in Worcester. After receiving my associates degree there I applied to Worcester State University and received my degree in science. The Master of Public Health is designed to meet the growing demand for professionals who have the ability to lead in a career that improves, promotes, and protects public health at the local, regional, national, and global levels.

Northeastern University's Master of Public Health program, offering a concentration in the social determinants of health, is designed to help students master the type of innovative thinking that is needed to confront complex public health challenges, both current and emerging.

Knowledgeable, professionally educated public health practitioners are in high demand. The program trains graduates to meet that demand by equipping them with the technical expertise necessary to tackle complex urban, rural, and local  health problems. Interdisciplinary faculty then pair that technical know-how with the cultural sensitivity required to communicate effectively with, and advocate for, diverse populations, both within the United States and abroad. Students examine how the built environment can affect populations' wellbeing through the lens of the social determinants of health.

Coursework, directed studies, and faculty projects provide students with real-world opportunities to apply newfound research and evaluation skills to areas including health policy, health technology and informatics, mental health, social justice, urban health, environmental health, and public health leadership and advocacy. The program seeks to train racially and ethnically diverse individuals driven by a desire to improve public health at the local, regional, national, and global levels. Graduates leave the program prepared to effectively address the inequities and multi-level public health risks that impact diverse populations.

  • Fall and spring entry dates
  • All of our core courses meet in the evenings once a week from 5-7:30 in order to accommodate working professionals
  • Elective courses may be taken on a wide range of public health topics, including cross-departmental offerings from Northeastern’s other colleges (law, business, social sciences, and more)
  • Community-oriented, 200-hour practicum takes place in a professional public health setting
  • The capstone project allows students to integrate theory and practice experiences in a major research, program planning, policy development, management, service delivery, or evaluation project
  • Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified in Public Health (CPH) Exam, the only professional certification specific to the field of public health.

I am a Columbia University graduate student pursuing a PhD in Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. I have an extensive background in data analysis, statistical programming, and public health research. My goal is to understand social determinants of health among those in the LGBTQ+ community and immigrant communities, and I hope to identify effective interventions to improve health.

I currently work with Dr. Dustin Duncan in analyzing data form the Trying to Understand Relationships, Networks and Neighborhoods in Trans women of color (TURNNT) Cohort. Specifically, I am looking into determinants of HIV prevention and treatment and identifying factors that affect them.

I am a first year doctoral student, first year fellow on the Global HIV Implementation Science Research Training Fellowship with ICAP, and an infectious disease epidemiologist. I received a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2014, an MPH in Epidemiological Methods and Applications from the University of Michigan in 2016, and prior to coming to Columbia, spent about seven years at the San Francisco Department of Public Health in the HIV Epidemiology Section. My research interests are centered around infectious disease prevention and treatment interventions, and I have past work pertaining to HIV care navigation, hepatitis C treatment, mpox vaccination, and COVID-19 coinfection among people with HIV. Apart from my role as an analyst, as a database administrator and developer, I designed, carried out, and evaluated a surveillance system modernization project to increase the accuracy, timeliness, and accessibility of HIV test results for department case investigators and outreach staff. My current projects relate to PrEP demand creation among women in South Africa and HIV care retention patterns in Côte d'Ivoire.

Hoisum Nguyen

Inspired by the stories of immigrants and social justice movements in the United States, Hoisum's research centralizes psychiatric and mental health outcomes with a particular focus on trauma and violence as it relates to firearms, racial/ethnic populations, LGBQIA+ communities, and financial means. Equipped with a Master’s in Public Health (MPH, Class of 2020) from Boston University in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, prior training in causal theories from UCLA (2021-2023), and previous work in suicide outcomes and emergency preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic for the county of Santa Clara, CA (2020-2022), Hoisum aims to create research of consequence for policy formulation.

Hoisum is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Epidemiology, a pre-doctoral fellow in Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Fellow (PET-T32), and also a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Research Scholar (HPRS) receiving health policy and leadership training from Johns Hopkins University (Class of 2026).

Adam Whalen

I am a first-year pre-doctoral candidate in Epidemiology and a pre-doctoral fellow in the Advanced Training in Environmental Health and Data Science Training Program, jointly managed through the Department of Epidemiology and the Environmental Health Sciences Department. I received my BS in Biology and Public Health Science in 2015 from Santa Clara University, and my MPH in Epidemiology with a Certificate in Applied Biostatistics and Public Health Data Science from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 2021. Previously, I worked as a data analyst at the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, working on research projects related to Hispanic/Latino health as well as women living with HIV. As a member of the Spatial Epidemiology Lab at Columbia, my current research investigates how discrimination against transgender women of color and sexual minority men affects health outcomes. I also examine activity space exposure to different features of the bult and social environment and how they influence criminal legal system involvement, sleep, access to gender-affirming health care, and other outcomes. My research interests include social and spatial epidemiology, novel spatiotemporal methods including GPS-based activity space analysis and geofencing applications, injury and violence outcomes such as transportation and police violence, and sexual and gender minority health.

Erin M. Annunziato

I am a pre-doctoral fellow in the Substance Abuse Epidemiology T32 Training Program. I am interested in structural-level determinants contributing to substance use-related harms, including racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment and drug-related legal outcomes. My current research examines relationships between 1) state policies, such as drug monitoring programs, and legal outcomes, and 2) racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment access through the criminal legal system. I have a BS in Biology from Boston College and an MPH in Epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health.

I am a second year pre-doctoral candidate in Epidemiology and a second year pre-doctoral fellow in the Advanced Training in Environmental Health and Data Science Training Program, jointly managed through the Department of Epidemiology and the Environmental Health Sciences Department. I earned a BS in Biology from Brooklyn College (CUNY) in 2019, and an MPH in Epidemiology with an Advanced Certificate in Public Health and Humanitarian Action from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 2021. Previously, I served as a clinical research coordinator at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Department of Neurology, where I managed all aspects of research and administration for the Stroke Division. My previous research has focused on a range of mental, neurological, and substance use issues in humanitarian settings. As a doctoral student, my research efforts are focused on evaluating neurodevelopmental outcomes amidst the complex landscape of mental health and substance use among adolescents and their caregivers in diverse conflict-affected settings. My research interests include global mental health, substance use epidemiology, child development, and disability advocacy.

Nicole Itzkowitz

I am a 2nd year PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology and a pre-doctoral fellow in the Advanced Training in Environmental Health and Data Science T32 Training Program. I entered the program in 2022 with an MSc in epidemiology from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a BA in public health from the University of Rochester. My research interests are broadly concerned with quantifying urban environmental and built environment exposures and exploring their relationship with injury and other non-communicable disease outcomes. My previous work at Imperial College focused on examining the causal relationship between acute noise pollution exposure and cardiovascular disease hospitalizations and creating a composite metric to estimate smoking behavior at small spatial resolutions. I am currently working with Dr. Andrew Rundle and the Built Environment and Health research group on several projects related to pedestrian and micromobility injuries and fatalities in the context of the built environment and alcohol use.

About the Master of Public Health Program

The Master of Public Health is a Schoolwide degree program. The rigorous curriculum prepares students to become leading public health professionals capable of addressing current global health problems with multidisciplinary, evidence-based approaches.

During the program, students interact with public health faculty members renowned for teaching, practice and ongoing research around the world. In this diverse and collaborative learning environment, students learn as much from each other as they do from their coursework.

MPH students benefit from a flexible curriculum, online and onsite options, hundreds of courses taught by 1,500+ faculty and RA opportunities with projects in 67 countries.

The program culminates in a capstone project that applies competencies and skills acquired through the program to a public health problem relevant to a student’s professional goals and interests.

Prior Work Experience

2 years of full-time, postbaccalaureate, health-related work experience or a doctoral degree in a field underlying public health

Prior Coursework

A math course (e.g., calculus, algebra, or statistics), an introductory general biology course, and a health-related science course (e.g., microbiology, nutrition, or anatomy and physiology) or a second biology course

Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT) are  optional* for this program. The admissions committee will make no assumptions if a standardized test score is omitted from an application, but will require evidence of quantitative/analytical ability through other application components such as academic transcripts and/or supplemental questions.  Applications will be reviewed holistically based on all application components.

*The MPH/MBA with the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School require either GRE or GMAT scores.

The Harvard Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) will prepare you for high-level leadership to make a difference in the fields of public health and health care. This first-of-its-kind, multidisciplinary degree provides advanced education in public health along with mastery of skills in management, leadership, communications, and innovation thinking. This is accomplished within a highly collaborative, small-group learning environment. The DrPH Program is a three-year program (with an option to extend to a fourth year) and during this time, students will learn how to address complex problems of public health policy and use advanced analytical and managerial tools to lead organizational and societal change. You will learn the scholarship of translation, assembling scientific evidence and using it to achieve real results in the field. Also, you will gain hands-on experience working to achieve a specific public health objective under the guidance of Harvard’s world-renowned faculty.

The Harvard DrPH is planned as a 3-year academic program (with an option to extend to a fourth year).  The first two years of the Harvard DrPH involve full-time, on-campus study as part of a collaborative cohort of approximately 9 – 15 students. The academic training will cover the biological, social, and economic foundations of public health, as well as essential statistical, quantitative, and methodological skills you will need to address today’s complex public health challenges, which rarely fall within neat disciplinary boundaries. You will also shape an individualized course of study in your second year by selecting courses to deepen specific areas of expertise and build skills that you will apply during your third year capstone project.

The DrPH Doctoral Project is the culminating experience of the Harvard DrPH degree program, and the primary locus of the knowledge translation elements of the degree. The pedagogical intent behind the Doctoral Project’s design is to provide an opportunity for the DrPH degree candidate to practice and develop personal leadership skills while engaging in a project that contributes substantively to advances in public health or healthcare.  

The optional fourth year are for students who need more time to complete their Doctoral Project.

You will have the skills to possibly start new organizations or work from within to change existing ones. Who Should Apply?

All candidates for admission to the Harvard DrPH should have, at a minimum:

  • A master’s OR doctoral degree in the health sciences or in another related field or non-US equivalent.
  • At least six years of full-time public health and/or public service experience in a relevant discipline .  Advanced degrees will not be considered in lieu of work experience as coursework will build directly on professional skills and experiences.
  • Prior coursework in public health-related methods and in specific technical areas of public health is also beneficial.

Beyond the formal qualifications, we seek top applicants who demonstrate an appetite and vision to effect change, displaying the energy and creativity to have already moved along that path early in their careers. We also explicitly seek to admit students with interest and experience across a broad cross-section of public and private areas of public health and health care locally, nationally, and internationally.

All students admitted to the DrPH program, including international students, should complete the financial aid application process . For admitted students with financial need, 50% tuition scholarships are offered for the first two years of the program.

  • Current Students

Health Policy PhD

Impact population health at a systems level.

Health policy is an interdisciplinary field that examines the organization and financing of health systems and services; the impact of health policies on population health; and the economic, social and behavioral determinants of health. It involves the investigation of all systems that affect population health, not just the medical care system. The purview of health policy is global.

The mission of our program is to prepare students for research careers in health policy and health services research; teaching; and public service in university, governmental and public policy settings. This program is distinguished by its interdisciplinary application of the social and behavioral science disciplines to real world health issues. Graduates are prepared to play lead scientific roles in addressing the many challenges facing health care and public health systems in the United States and countries around the world.

Students must successfully complete a health services research readings and methods seminar (two semesters), five specialty field courses, three quantitative research methods courses, and three additional graduate elective courses.

The program includes three specialty fields:

The Health Economics specialty field draws on economics, epidemiology and statistics to understand the causal relationship between different aspects of health and the health care sector. With an emphasis on quantifying relationships, health economics covers a broad range of study areas including health production, demand and supply of health services, health care financing, behavioral responses to institutional or policy incentives, policy evaluations and other efficiency, and equity issues surrounding health.

The Organizations & Management specialty field trains scholars in organizational behavior and political science in regards to health. Theories and methods in organizational sociology, political science and social psychology are central to the study of health organizations. Specialty field courses in macro-organizational theory, micro-organizational theory and organizational analysis of the health sector are required. This specialty field emphasizes the management of health care and public health organizations and systems, the implementation and dissemination of policies and practices within and across organizations, and the role of policy-making institutions as platforms for the creation and modification of health policies.

The Population Health Sciences specialty field trains students for research careers in the social, behavioral, and economic determinants of health and the study of interventions, policies, and practices that impact the health of populations and vulnerable communities. The specialty field emphasizes addressing the social and behavioral determinants of health through quantitative research informed by theoretical frameworks in economics, psychology, demography, and social epidemiology. Training in innovative methodologies for establishing causal relationships in quasi-experimental research is a cornerstone of the Population Health Sciences specialty field. Students will learn and integrate cutting-edge methods from key areas of strength at Berkeley: biostatistics, social science methods such as econometrics and formal demography, and the rapidly evolving set of data science innovations such as machine learning that are being advanced at Berkeley including in the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society. The explosion of health sector data availability, along with Berkeley’s innovation hub positioning, make this an excellent track for students looking to become quantitative experts who can lead research across a wide variety of population health science and health policy questions.

Students have access to all of UC Berkeley’s disciplines and professional schools, in addition to UCSF faculty and research programs. This is a full-time program geared for careers in academia and research and students typically complete it in four to five years. Our program is administered by Berkeley Public Health and the doctoral degree is granted by UC Berkeley’s Graduate Division.

Graduates can achieve and demonstrate expertise in the following major academic outcomes:

  • Develop domain expertise in core works in health policy and the selected specialty field.
  • Understand central social science theoretical frameworks and debates shaping health policy.
  • Demonstrate substantive knowledge of the specialty field sufficient to design and teach graduate-level courses in that field.
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct rigorous quantitative research.
  • Plan and conduct independent research using advanced research methods.
  • Demonstrate the mastery of academia and grant writing, conference presentation, IRB procedures and ethics in research.
  • Engage in intellectual exchange among students and faculty across the university to enhance interdisciplinary research and training.

Qualifications

A master’s degree is not a requirement for this program, however, entering students should have completed introductory coursework in statistics, microeconomics, epidemiology and public health. Students without master’s-level coursework in these areas are required to take relevant courses at UC Berkeley or otherwise demonstrate mastery of these areas.

Graduates are well-prepared to assume academic careers in research and teaching. Many of our graduates move directly to positions in academia, government or research organizations. Other graduates receive postdoctoral fellowships to continue specific training in their area of interest and research.

To apply to the Health Policy PhD program, please complete the UC Berkeley Graduate Division admissions application . This program does not use the SOPHAS application.

Submissions of GRE scores are optional but strongly recommended for this program. Especially if you have no other evidence of quantitative, verbal, or analytical abilities in your application. If not submitting a score, competitive applicants will need to provide alternative evidence of strong quantitative capability and should speak to their analytical and quantitative preparation for the PhD program in their application based on past coursework (e.g. statistics, microeconomics, math) and/or professional experience.

Please submit a writing sample and provide a list of publications and/or presentations related to your academic or professional background (include the PubMed ID if applicable).

If your work is published as a website or part of it, please provide the URL. Your writing sample can be a written assignment, journal article, report, Op-Ed, commentary, conference abstract, or other publication. Please enter your most recent citation first.

This is a quantitatively-oriented health policy program. Prospective applicants primarily interested in qualitative methods are advised to explore related programs such as the UC Berkeley PhD in Social Welfare or Medical Anthropology, or the UCSF Sociology program. Prospective applicants instead primarily focused on computational methods should also consider related UC Berkeley PhD programs in Biostatistics or Computational Precision Health.

Health Policy Research Centers at UC Berkeley and UCSF

Health Policy PhD students have access to a wide range of resources at UC Berkeley and UCSF, including highly regarded research centers. Below are brief descriptions of a selected list of research centers most closely aligned with the Health Policy PhD program. These Centers include faculty from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines who bring expertise in health services research and provide settings for intensive training and mentorship opportunities for trainees.

  • The  Berkeley Center for Health Technology (BCHT) , co-directed by Dr. James Robinson (Director) and Dr. Tim Brown (Associate Director), promotes the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare through research and education on the development, insurance coverage, payment, and appropriate use of medical technologies. The focus of BCHT is on biopharmaceuticals, implantable medical devices, insurance benefit design, and payment methods. Research initiatives include leadership roundtables, case studies of leading organizations, and econometric analyses of public and private data sources. BCHT helps stakeholders design a healthcare system that combines innovation and entrepreneurship with economic efficiency and social fairness.
  • The UC Berkeley  Nicholas C. Petris Center on Health Care Markets and Consumer Welfare , co-directed by Dr. Richard Scheffler (Director) and Dr. Brent Fulton (Associate Director), focuses on consumer protection, affordability and access to healthcare, especially for low and middle-income individuals. The Petris Center also focuses on and the role of information in consumer choice, and regulation and competition within healthcare markets.  The research center is named after former California State Senator Nicholas Petris, who advocated strongly on behalf of California consumers for affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare.
  • The UC Berkeley  Center for Healthcare Organizational and Innovation Research (CHOIR) , co-directed by Dr. Hector Rodriguez (Director) and Dr. Amanda Brewster (Associate Director) aspires to help make the U.S. healthcare system among the most responsive in the world through practice-based research and dissemination of evidence. CHOIR emphasizes innovations in healthcare delivery and assessment of organizational performance to improve the technical quality of care delivered, patient experience and outcomes of care, population health, and cost. CHOIR works to maximize their “voice” and impact through webinars, roundtables, and discussions with private and public sector action and thought leaders.
  • The  Laboratory for Systems Medicine , directed by Dr. Ziad Obermeyer, applies methods from machine learning, biostatistics, and econometrics to the complex world of medical diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes. The center translates large observational datasets into new ways to understand and improve the life and death decisions that providers and patients make every day, in the US and across the world.
  • The Center on the  Economics and Demography of Aging (CEDA) , directed by Professor William Dow, was founded in 1993 to promote interdisciplinary research on the economic and demographic aspects of aging.  In response to the growing demand from government agencies, Congress, and academic researchers for timely, accessible, and practical information as well as basic research. At the central core of CEDA is a group of outstanding formal and mathematical and statistical demographers who apply their skills to a variety of research areas, including biodemography, demographic modeling and forecasting, and intergenerational transfers including fiscal accounting. This central core is enriched by other themes, notably psychological and behavioral economics with applications to economic and health-related behaviors.
  • The  UC-Berkeley Opportunity Lab (O-Lab) , co-directed by Professor Ben Handel and Professor Hilary Hoynes serves as the central research hub for Berkeley scholars conducting rigorous, data-driven research on social and economic inequality in the United States. Our network of faculty and graduate students work across disciplines and study a wide array of topics, from the role of childhood food security on long-term economic security to the disparate impacts of climate change on low-income communities.
  • The UCSF  Center for Vulnerable Populations  at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital carries out innovative research to prevent and treat chronic disease in populations for whom social conditions often conspire to both promote various chronic diseases and make their management more challenging. Beyond the local communities it serves, CVP is nationally and internationally known for its research in health communication and health policy to reduce health disparities, with special expertise in the social determinants of health, including literacy, food policy, poverty, and minority status, with a focus on the clinical conditions of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.  CVP is at the frontline of practice-based research on chronic diseases for the diverse and disadvantaged populations of San Francisco and the Bay Area. UCSF faculty mentors Drs. Margot Kushel, Courtney Lyles, and Urmimala Sarkar are core CVP faculty.
  • The  Healthforce Center  at UCSF was founded in 1992 to help healthcare leaders and  policymakers better understand the health workforce and develop successful strategies and policies. The Center’s dynamic leadership training programs have touched thousands of people across the entire healthcare ecosystem who continue to make significant and meaningful change in healthcare. UCSF Professor Janet Coffman and Professor Joanne Spetz are core faculty of the center.

Northeastern's MSHI program receives HIMSS Approved Education Partner designation.

The Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) at Northeastern’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences and Khoury College of Computer Sciences has been designated as a HIMSS Approved Education Partner (AEP).

Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Inc. (HIMSS) is a mission-driven nonprofit that supports the transformation of the health ecosystem through information and technology.

Receiving a HIMSS AEP designation means our Health Informatics graduate program “has met HIMSS’ rigorous standards for quality health information and technology education aligned to the competencies that are most critical in today’s workforce.” Our program, according to HIMSS, boasts a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on the interdisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption, and application of information, data, and technology-driven innovations in healthcare.

HIMSS says the Introduction to Health Informatics and Health Information Systems course, one of many courses in the MSHI program, “is a great example how the coursework offered by this program is preparing students for the current needs of the industry.”

This designation puts Northeastern’s MSHI program in an exclusive group of those recognized by HIMSS for accomplishments and programs that prepare learners to sit for a HIMSS professional certification exam.

SPHHS to Launch Online Master of Health Administration Degree Program in Fall 2025

The University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences has recently been approved by the UMass Board of Trustees and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education to offer a new Master of Health Administration program that will be available to students in fall 2025.

In their April 2024 meeting, the trustees approved a Master of Health Administration (MHA), an online degree program in the Department of Health Promotion and Policy. The part-time, online MHA program will be one of the few of its kind offered by a Massachusetts public university.

The curriculum is comprised of 40 credits including core courses in public health (health policy and management), management, strategic management, leadership, graduate seminars and a capstone experience that involves a service-learning case study with the student’s current or prospective place of employment.

Lawrence Pellegrini , director of the Online MPH in Public Health Practice Program and senior lecturer in health policy and management, says the program is designed to be completed in three years for individuals who want to further their education part-time while continuing to work.

“The degree is designed for working professionals looking to acquire needed skillsets to gain leadership positions within the healthcare field,” Pellegrini says.  “The program is fully online and asynchronous which offers a great deal of flexibility for students to complete the degree while balancing other responsibilities.” 

The program differs from a business school master’s program in health care administration or master’s in business administration because it is within the SPHHS and is public health focused. 

“We’re a school of public health,” Pellegrini says. “A lot of the values that we're going to be installing in the context of our program are going to be very much public health-oriented, so there would be a lot of population-based approaches to healthcare innovation.”

Graduates would be prepared for roles as healthcare administrators across industry sectors in businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, non-profit groups, community wellness programs, residential healthcare facilities, hospitals and clinical settings.

Program Overview

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Online MPH Program prepares students to become future health care leaders and tackle public health challenges in their own community and around the world. Students will acquire competency in the fundamental public health disciplines. This includes research design and conduct, data analysis and policy analysis, communications, program planning and administration, public health systems and the organization of health services in the United States and Latin America, recognition and analysis of ethical issues in public health and professional practice, the needs of special populations, and the integration of these core disciplines in public health decision making.

The MPH degree is a 45-credit hour program that is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

Upon completion of the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, all graduates will be able to:

  • Average Program Duration:   2 years. Students enrolled in the Accelerated MPH program may complete this degree in 1 year. See details below.
  • Total required credits:   45 credits

The MPH Curriculum

The MPH is a generalist degree that provides a comprehensive education in areas of knowledge basic to public health. The total requirements for the major are 45 credits for traditional students. The credits must be completed as core, electives, and capstone. Many students who have an advanced degree (MD,  MBBS , JD,  DDS , EdD or Ph.D.) may qualify for a credit waiver of up to nine credits.

Effective Spring 2019, the curriculum requirements for the MPH degree include 19 credits of core coursework, 9 credits of public health skills (generalist concentration), 12 credits of electives, and 5 credits for capstone. Students entering the program January 2019 and beyond will complete the revised curriculum requirements.

The Accelerated MPH Program

The Accelerated MPH program follows the same 45-credit curriculum as the MPH program, but is completed in one calendar year from summer to summer. Accelerated MPH students start the program in the summer semester, continue in fall semester, take courses during winter inter-session, continue in spring and spring inter-session, and end in the following summer semester. The course load per semester for accelerated students is greater than for traditional students; to ensure completion of the requirements within the shortened timeframe, accelerated students must follow the program plan designed under the supervision of their assigned faculty advisor from the start of the program. Master of Public Health

Program Admission Prerequisites

To be admitted to the MPH graduate program, a student must hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field and have completed:

  • Two semesters of science (such as biology, chemistry, environmental science, anatomy, physiology, and physics).
  • One semester of college algebra or an equivalent course.

  Program Admission Requirements

  • Students must complete the graduate program application for admission into the MPH graduate program (available on the university website)
  • Applicants must submit official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended, including community colleges. Applicants should have an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. (If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, it is possible to be admitted on a probationary status.)
  • The GRE is not required.
  • All applicants must submit three letters of recommendation. These letters should be written by former professors and / or employers to highlight why you would do well in the MPH graduate program.
  • As part of the application packet, applicants will submit a resume, cover letter, and personal statement addressing why they are interested in the program as well as goals upon program completion.
  • A $50 application fee is to be included with the application materials. A fee of $75 must accompany the application of all foreign applicants, except those under university-sponsored exchange programs.
  • The application process will be conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Admission and Scholarship Policies for Graduate and Professional Programs, which was adopted by the 77th Session of the Texas Legislature, and which amends Chapter 51 of the Texas Education Code.
