ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS IN CLASSICAL SANSKRIT LITERATURE

Profile image of International Res Jour Managt Socio Human

2012, isara solutions

In olden days, man, as part and parcel of nature, used to live harmoniously with it. He even treated the forces of nature as divine beings—Agni Deva, Varuna Deva, Vayu Deva and glorified their existence and prayed for their intervention in nature’s fury. This paper focuses on the environmental awareness in the Sanskrit literature.

The great contemplation of the rise of Indian religion, philosophy, spirituality, culture and civilization is the result of the great merit of Indian seekers, sages, ascetics and achayas. The Indian sage, illuminated by knowledge, was a unique scientist, researcher, unique thinker of humanity, a visionary and a leading philosopher. He was well aware of the truth by Swadhyaya that nothing is meaningless under the constitution established by nature. Surya, air, water, land, flora, fauna, nature, all are always cooperative in the interest of each other. He is auspicious for man. Therefore, it is the moral religion of man to use these environmental substances properly and always continue to preserve them.

The present article Environmental Vision In Sanskrit Religious Scriptures reflects upon the pivotal role of our epics-Ramayana and Mahabharata, Puranas and Samaritigranthas in ecology and conservation. Our ancient Hindu scriptures have been written in Sanskrit language as it is considered the oldest language in human history. These scriptures of the Hindu religion have given a detailed description of trees, plants, wildlife and brought out the importance of these Nature objects for people. We get the message for preservation of environment and ecological balance from these religious literatures. These scriptures are our most precious heritage, literature which is truly Eco-centric. 1 They are the best source of human ideals which are said to be revealed to Indian seers. Their ideas and thoughts are also perceived to be wholesome and respectable since time immemorial. The subject matter contained herein is theoretical and practical which reflects the thinking of Indian seers. The oldest epics in the world history of literature are the Ramayana and Mahabharata. They have been a perennial source of spiritual, cultural and artistic inspiration, not only to the people of India, but also to the people all over the world. They have many vivid descriptions of Nature, forests, trees, plants and gardens. The people of Ramayana and Mahabharata worshipped rivers, lakes, forests, trees, air and Nature and developed their relationship with animals as their friends. Let us examine, what environment they created and passed over to us! Our seers loved to live in forests and they used to rear trees as their own. They considered that the trees absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen (pranavayu) and they are the lifeline (Pran) of all living beings. The destruction of banyan, peepal, mango and tulsi was prohibited. Man lived in harmony with Nature (Prakriti) and there was hardly any action to disturb the environment. Both the Epics encouraged afforestation and condemned the deforestation. The Mahabharata states that " even if there is only one tree full of flowers and fruits in the village, that place becomes worthy of worship and respect. " 2 Ramayana and Mahabharata are blessed with the rich greenery of nature where rivers are full of neat and clean water and the breeze is pure, nourishing, and healthy. Dr. Kaushik Acharya

The Vedas are the first texts in the literature of human race. They deal with knowledge, both physical and spiritual. The Vedic views revolve around the concept of Nature and life. We can easily figure it out how nature was related to life and livelihood of Vedic people through their literature which is referred to as The Vedas. This paper attempts to explore the awareness of ancient Indian people about Environment.

Mankind has always tried to comprehend different natural occurrences and environmental features which surround them as free gifts of nature be it mountains, rivers, rainfall and vegetation. Since ancient times, these gifts of nature allowed human beings to expand their activities and develop from being primitive hunter-gatherers to pastoral nomads and then to settled agriculturists. However, the seers and thinkers of the ancient times understood the fact that while gifts of nature could be found and used aplenty, attempts to exploit nature beyond the boundaries of stability would lead to the nature's wrath. Thus, the idea of utilizing nature with due consideration to maintaining its integrity, along with other inhabitants of the environment, was the ancient Indian perception of sustainable living which was rooted in environmental consciousness.

This article focuses on the environment and its related things mentioned in the Simad Bhagavad Gita, the holy book to the Hindu community. The Aryan civilization, which molded to the Hindu or ancient Indian civilization was a riverine one, thus nature was in the mind of the inhabitants. This was reflected in most of the scriptures and the Gita is not the exception. In the current article we have mainly pointed to the slokas (the verses) describing the nature and relation of living with it, human nature and behavior connected to the nature, the evaluation of the nature and its livingetc.

Literature has undergone a massive change with the course of the time. It holds the mirror up to nature. Environmental crisis is one of the major hazards encountered by the world today. Literature now addresses the current ecological crisis prevalent all around the globe. Ecocriticism has emerged as a new branch of study which observes the interrelationship between literature and environment. This paper aims at exploring the concern for nature and environment in Indian English poetry. The paper makes an ecocritical analysis of Indian poetry written in English and the diverse attitudes of the poets towards the environment and the need for conserving nature.

Our Heritage

Modern world is experiencing various environmental disasters due to the overexploitation of natural resources to satisfy the zeal of maximizing profit and to keep in tune with the technological advancement. This also resulted in the growing consciousness among a good section of people for the conservation of natural resources and keeping the ecological balance. In this context it is to be mentioned that people in ancient India had a fairly good understanding of ecology and this aspect is reflected in various Indian scriptures and literatures. The Vedas put great importance to the protection of environment and maintenance of purity. Instead of exploiting nature it teaches human beings to live in harmony with nature and also to recognize the divine soul prevailing in all living and non-living elements. Vedic culture and scriptures have profoundly stated about ecosystems and the requirement for maintaining the balance.

Hinduism is not only one of the major religions of the world but also a way of life. However, like any other religion, Hinduism is complex if not obfuscating. The disparate shade of Hinduism as a way of life has been manifested in the environmental horizons too. Nature has been an important part of the Hindu belief system. Belief in the Vedas, karma, the ritual of offering flowers and fruits to a deity, vegetarianism, yoga, offerings to snake, etc is some of the practices which one identifies with Hinduism. This paper attempts to explore and not verify the practices followed in Hinduism and their association with the environment-in the form of deities who are prayed, practices associated with Hindu festivals, belief systems and faith. While there are a plethora of ancient scripts dealing with Hinduism, the purpose of this paper will be restricted to the exploration of those aspects of Hinduism that are enmeshed with the environment. Finally, this paper also explores how some of the ancient practices have created a place for themselves in contemporary times and how they are affecting the lives of the people at large.

sanskrit essay on waste management

An efficient waste management ecosystem

(Mains GS 3 : Conservation, Environmental Pollution and Degradation, Environmental Impact Assessment.)

  • This year's Budget emphasised the role of cleaner technologies such as solar energy & batteries and the importance of transitioning to a circular economy for India’s future economic growth.

Circular economy:

  • A circular economy entails markets that give incentives to reusing products, rather than scrapping them and then extracting new resources.
  • In such an economy, all forms of waste, such as clothes, scrap metal and obsolete electronics, are returned to the economy or used more efficiently.
  • This can provide a way to not only protect the environment, but use natural resources more wisely, develop new sectors, create jobs and develop new capabilities.

Waste management ecosystem:

  • The emphasis for creation of a circular economy is significant since an efficient waste management ecosystem would be necessary to manage the enormous waste generated by renewable energy projects in the coming decades.
  • According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) the cumulative waste generated by India’s total installed solar capacity could be as high as 325 kilotonnes by 2030.
  • A consulting firm, JMK Research and Analytics, estimates that the market for battery recycling will be around 23 Gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2030.
  • Further, the prevalence of a circular economy could also partially insulate these industries from potential supply chain shocks triggered by extraneous developments.

Helping net-zero target:

  • A study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) has estimated that India would need over 5,630 GW of solar and 1,792 GW of wind energy to achieve its net-zero target in the year 2070.
  • A robust renewables waste management and recycling ecosystem could help people and India reduce environmental harm, provide energy security, and also create new jobs.
  • Thus India needs to take some comprehensive steps to nurture a circular economy in the Indian renewable energy industry.

Revised regulations:

  • Policymakers should revise existing electronic waste management rules to bring various clean energy components under their ambit.
  • These rules are based on extended producer responsibility that identifies component producers as responsible entities to manage their waste products.
  • The Indian renewable energy industry has a complex structure that comprises various manufacturers, assemblers, importers and distributors.
  • Hence, the revised regulations should clearly define the responsibilities of various stakeholders involved in the renewable energy value chain and provide annual targets for the collection and the recycling of waste.

Dumping and burning:

  • Currently, in the absence of any regulation, landfilling is the cheapest and most common practice to manage renewable energy waste, however, it is not environmentally sustainable.
  • All clean energy technologies thrive on metals and non-metals with different levels of toxicity thus If the waste equipment is dumped in the open, then these elements could leach into the environment and enter the food chain.
  • Studies show that the leaching of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium from solar photovoltaic modules could increase by 90% and 40%, respectively, under acidic conditions.
  • Further, burning the polymeric encapsulant layer in solar photovoltaic modules releases toxic gases such as sulphur dioxide and some volatile organic compounds.

Invest in R&D:

  • The renewable energy industry should invest in the research and development of recycling technologies as recycling is a multistep process that includes dismantling, disassembly, and extraction.
  • Dismantling is largely a manual process that is sometimes automated. Disassembly can be done mechanically, thermally or chemically.
  • Besides these traditional methods, investments in research and development could help discover new ways of recycling that result in higher efficiency and a less environmentally damaging footprint.
  • Industries should also explore technology transfers with global recycling firms for establishing domestic waste recycling facilities.

Access to finance:

  • There has to be a creation of innovative financing routes for waste management as access to finance is a major roadblock for players in the recycling ecosystem.
  • The central government should nudge public and private sector banks to charge lower interest rates on loans disbursed for setting up renewable energy waste recycling facilities.
  • Assurance of a minimum waste quantum to run these facilities and issuing performance-based green certificates to recyclers that could be traded to raise money for waste management would also help ease the financial burden.
  • A market for recycled materials could also be created through mandatory procurement by the renewable energy and other relevant manufacturing industries.

Product design and quality.:

  • In India there is a strong need for an improvement in product design and quality.
  • Renewable energy component manufacturers should find substitutes for toxic metals such as cadmium and lead used in their products and simplify product designs to reduce recycling steps.
  • Such improvements in process efficiencies could go a long way in curbing waste creation at the source and its subsequent impact on the environment.

Stringent quality control:

  • The Union and State governments should set stringent quality control standards for components used in their tenders as this will prevent premature end-of-life of components, and consequent waste creation.
  • Substandard components generate considerable waste due to early life damage that is often irreplaceable, and the components often have to be discarded.
  • Such quality enforcement could also position India’s renewable energy industry as a global supplier of quality products.

Multiple actors involved:

  • The renewable energy recycling ecosystem has a complex structure where there are multiple actors involved, but it would be an integral part of our journey toward a sustainable future.
  • Beyond sustainability, it would also offer quality employment opportunities for the future generations as new jobs would be created across the entire value chain of waste management and recycling.
  • Further, workers in the informal sector could access various socio-economic benefits and look forward to an improved quality of life.

Conclusion:

  • The majority of India’s recycling sector is informal and workers have to work in unsafe environments without standardised wages; therefore, developing an efficient renewable energy waste management and circular ecosystem is imperative rather than a choice.

Short Essay on Waste Management [100, 200, 400 Words] With PDF

Waste management is a matter of concern for our world in the current situation. Poor waste management eventually results in environmental pollution. Due to this extreme concern, many institutions use this context as an essay topic to evaluate their students’ overall comprehension skills. In this lesson, you will learn how to write an essay on waste management. So, let’s get started.

Short Essay on Waste Management in 100 Words

Waste management is one of the significant processes on Earth that leads to sustainable development and habitat. It happens through the reuse and recycling of waste products in our houses, factories, industries etc. At present, the world is facing a severe threat of pollution due to poor waste management.

It is the ultimate need of the hour that wastes must be reduced and reused properly. We on a daily basis produce tons of waste materials that are harmful both for us and the environment. Thus several measures are undertaken through which the wastes accumulated are hence segregated and utilised for better purposes.

Short Essay on Waste Management in 200 Words

Waste management is the call of duty for every 21st-century person on Earth. Wastes are the degradable remnants of our daily activities. It involves household chores, as well as factory dispositions. We are clearly aware of the volume of waste materials that are regularly generated and how carelessly they are disposed of.

Such attention to fewer actions of discarding wastes results in hazards to social and public health including plants and animals. But today waste management is a matter of concern with the increasing population on Earth. The urban expansions, the industrial growth, and the changes in our lifestyle and consumption are also a reason behind this. Waste management takes place through innovations in science and technology and is transformed into a new object of reuse and renovations.

Wastes produced on a daily basis are of several types. It can be solid such as household, laboratory, and industries’ wastes; liquid wastes such as chemicals, sewage, and pipes; and also gaseous wastes like smoke from chimneys of industries, tobacco smells, burning petroleum goods, vehicle emissions, forest fire, and others. Generally, wastes are classified also as biodegradable such as the waste products that come from plants and animals, and non-biodegradable like metals and plastics waste products that cannot be decomposed. All these are rectified through waste management procedures.

Short Essay on Waste Management in 400 Words

Our lives consist of changes and the occurrence of some inevitable situations. Waste production is one such circumstance that cannot be avoided, yet is often considered as the most hazardous effect on the living world and the atmosphere. Waste is something that creates no value and only depreciates our well-being. The basic reason behind the production of waste is the growing civilisation.

The ever-increasing population demands necessities and luxuries for daily use, which in turn generates a huge amount of waste materials. The household produces wastes, industries, factories, vehicles, and laboratories are chief sources of waste production. All these only ends up polluting the environment. The population along with developed lifestyle are again key reasons for waste generation on Earth. Thus urban areas produce a greater amount than rural places due to lesser modernisation of the surroundings and lifestyle.

Waste is unarguably a disaster to humankind and so it needs immediate attention and a proper management system. Ill disposal of wastes results in more than half of the pollution in a heavily populated country like India. In India, corporations and municipal bodies are responsible for maintaining this cleanliness and preserving public health. Generally, wastes are broadly categorised as solids, liquids, and gases. But for a greater facility, it is chiefly divided into biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes.

Biodegradable wastes include kitchen wastes, sanitary wastes, green wastes, and wastes from shops. But the more harmful form, the non-biodegradable wastes contain plastics, papers, all packaging and containers, metals, glass, rubber that cannot be decomposed naturally. These wastes stay in nature and prolong the harm to not only terrestrial creatures but also aquatic beings.

Hence management of the filth is very important. The general disposal methods may often prove unsustainable and serious. Thus waste management is now the call of the day. It is not just a local phenomenon, but also the attention of the states countries and the globe. This management involves at the base the segregation of the wastes and likewise disposing of it.

The principal method involved here is the method of ‘’ reuse, reduce, and recycle’’. Generally, the domestic wastes can be utilised as vermicompost and fertilizers for plants. But for the non-biodegradable wastes, the process involves a higher system. The waste dealers collect them and deposit them into factories that crush the wastes into pulps and recycles them into different, helpful materials. At present, the globe has engaged in not only recycling but also refusing to use materials that create a huge amount of wastes. Thus waste management is the solution of modern society and way to development.

In this session above, I have tried to discuss all possible aspects of the topic within a recommended word limit. Hopefully, after going through this lesson, you have understood the overall approach to write these essays. If you have any doubt regarding the session, post them in the comment section below. When the landfill site is closed, discharge water filtration and clarification equipment is installed, the territory is covered with specific material and backfilled. Then many tubes used to purify gas are installed. The greatest danger in landfill restoration is the groundwater contamination. In and around Moscow there are a few dozens of waste deposits, some of which are growing higher than multistoried residential houses standing nearby.

sanskrit essay on waste management

During my work on the project, I visited 7 landfills in Moscow and the Moscow region. Some objects were guarded, and it was so absurd that the guards actually guarded a heap of rubbish.

While in these landfills, I saw that the liquid produced by the rotting waste flows out of the pipes sticking out on the slopes into the nearby rivers. Working on this project I wanted to show the rubbish not in the way everyone is used to see it. What is seen in front of our eyes is hilly landscapes, hiding million tons of consumer waste — a typical view of the contemporary system. We do not always see what is hidden.

New modification of Russian VVER-440 fuel loaded at Paks NPP in Hungary

DECEMBER 14, 2020 — After the recent refueling at power unit 3 of the Hungarian Paks NPP, its VVER-440 reactor has been loaded with a batch of fresh fuel including 18 fuel bundles of the new modification. The new fuel will be introduced at all four operating power units of the Paks NPP, and the amount of new-modification bundles in each refueling will be increased gradually.

Development of the new VVER-440 fuel modification was completed in 2020 under the contract between TVEL JSC and MVM Paks NPP Ltd. Its introduction would optimize the hydro-uranium ratio in the reactor core, enabling to increase the efficiency of fuel usage and advance the economic performance of the power plant operation. All VVER-440 fuel modifications are manufactured at the Elemash Machine-Building Plant, a facility of TVEL Fuel Company in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

Paks Nuclear Power Plant

“Introduction of a new fuel is an option to improve technical and economic performance of a nuclear power plant without substantial investment. We are actively engaged in development of new models and modifications of VVER-440 fuel for power plants in Europe. The projects of the new fuels for Loviisa NPP in Finland, Dukovany NPP in the Czech Republic, Mochovce and Bohunice NPPs in Slovakia, are currently at various stages of implementation. Despite the same reactor model, these projects are quite different technically and conceptually, since we take into account the individual needs and requirements of our customers,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

For reference:

The project of development and validation of the new fuel has been accomplished with participation of a number of Russian nuclear industry enterprises, such as OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests.

Paks NPP is the only functioning nuclear power plant in Hungary with total installed capacity 2000 MWe. It operates four similar units powered by VVER-440 reactors and commissioned one by one in 1982-1987. Currently, Paks NPP is the only VVER-440 plant in the world operating in extended 15-monthes fuel cycle. The power plant produces about 15 bln kWh annually, about a half of electric power generation in Hungary. In 2018, the project of increasing the duration of Paks NPP fuel cycle won the European competition Quality Innovation Award in the nomination “Innovations of large enterprises”. Russian engineers from TVEL JSC, Kurchatov Institute, OKB Gidropress, Bochvar Institute and Elemash Machine-building plant provided assistance to the Hungarian colleagues in accomplishment of the project.

It is the only supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants.
