Hindi Diwas Essay Available on Vedantu

Many languages are spoken in India. 22 languages have been recognized by the constitution. Among all these languages, Hindi is the most spoken language of India. Now, the number of people who speak and know Hindi is increasing all over the world, and Hindi is ranked third in the most spoken language in the world. In addition to being the oldest language in the world, Hindi is also the simplest and most prosperous language. Its script is Devanagari and anyone can learn it easily. Reading the Hindi language is very easy, so people outside India are also attracted towards Hindi and want to learn it.

Hindi is spoken as a second language in most parts of the country, except for the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, and also by a large part of people in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh, who also write in this language.

Hindi is India’s second language, next only to English. Despite this, India’s official status and recognition of this language is far from being satisfactory.

While English is the most popular foreign language in India, Hindi has barely a mention in school textbooks, even in Hindi-speaking states. Most people have only heard of the language through movies and television. While English is taught in schools from the standard level, Hindi is rarely taught in schools, especially from higher grades.

Hindi became an official language of India in 1950 and since then it has been on a continuous march to become the “most popular language of the nation”. Hindi Day is an annual celebration held on 11 September on the occasion of Hindi’s 150th anniversary.

It is celebrated every year in cities and towns across the country and a large number of public and private events take place to mark this day. It is believed that there are more than a billion speakers of Hindi.

Hindi was born as a variant of Sanskrit. In course of time, it developed into an independent language with its own dialects. It is the most widely used language of the Indian subcontinent. Hindi derives most of its vocabulary from Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic languages. Hindi developed a script of its own from the 16th century and the first publication in the Devanagari script was done in 1822.

Hindi was originally written with the script of the Sanskrit language. After 1822, when the first Devanagari edition was published, the script was revised and the Hindi language became available in a standardized form. The Hindi alphabet has 26 letters in contrast to the 26 letters of the Devanagari script and all 26 letters of the alphabet have the same form as in English. After 1822, the language continued to evolve and over the centuries the modern form of Hindi has become distinctive.

The language has many dialects and varieties with its own sets of written scripts. These include Awadhi, Bundeli, Bhasa, Braj, Bundi, Buxar, Garhwali, Gaya, Hindi, Kumaoni, Maithili, Malawi, Mahajani, Marwari, Nagari, Nimadi, Pahari, Panjabi, Rajasthani, Saraswat, Saurashtra, Shilahari, Sindhi, Tharu, Western Hindi, Western Odia, and Western Punjabi. The script written in each language is its official script.

Devanagari was the standard script of Sanskrit and it was used to write Marathi from 1534 onwards. Marathi became a separate language in the mid-19th century. It is written using the Devanagari script and, like other Indian languages, is largely a Brahmic language.

In the eastern part of India, Gujarati was written in the Gujarati script. After 1820 the script became the official script of the government of the Bombay Presidency. It was followed by another Bengali script called Gaurī and was used for the official script of the Calcutta Presidency from 1787.

Gaurī was replaced by Bengali script from 1874 and it was later used for the official script of East Bengal and the present state of Bangladesh. The Bengali script was written in a modified form with new letters which were borrowed from Devanagari.

Gujarati, Bengali, and Assamese were Brahmic languages. Sanskrit was different from them in that it had two scripts. The standard script, called Devanagari, was used in the west, whereas Brahmī script, called the Nīlakṣmī script, was used in the east.

Javanese and Sundanese scripts used for writing Malay, Dutch, and English are based on Brahmic script. The Malay script, called Batak, was based on Brahmic script. It was used to write Malay and Makassarese. It was influenced by Latin.

The Javanese script, called Sunda Batara, was a modification of Malay script and was used for Javanese and Indonesian. The Sunda Batara script was also influenced by Roman script. The Makassarese script is not influenced by the Roman script and is more similar to the Javanese script.

The Assamese script is also based on Brahmic script. It was used to write the Assamese language and was influenced by Javanese script and Brahmic script. The Brahmic script was used to write Hindi in different forms.

The modern form of the Hindi script, called Devanagari, is derived from the Brahmic script. It is similar to the Gujarati script and Sanskrit script. Devanagari is called "bhasa parochin" or the "new script" in Hindi. A Devanagari-based variant, called Nagari script, is used for writing Hindi in North India. It is used for modern Hindi. It was developed by Hindi writer, poet, and scholar Bijit Kumar Bhattacharya (1882–1931).

Highlights

In the Constitution of India, Hindi, written in Devanagari script, was adopted as the official language of the country under Article 343 in 1949. Apart from being the ancient, rich, and simple language of the world, Hindi is also our national language. The Hindi Diwas, celebrated on 14th September every year, is a way to cherish Indian culture and pay respect to the Hindi language. It was decided by the Constitution on 14th September 1949 to make Hindi the national language of India. Keeping in mind the importance of this decision and promoting Hindi in every field, it was decided in 1953 to celebrate September 14th as Hindi Diwas every year throughout India. Since then, every year on 14th September, Hindi Diwas is celebrated in India so that we Indians understand our duty and respect our mother tongue Hindi. To encourage people towards Hindi, a ceremony is organized on Hindi Day in which prizes are given to those who use and promote Hindi during their work.

Awards

Some of the names of the awards are- Rajbhasha Gaurav Award and Rajbhasha Kirti Award.

The Rajbhasha Gaurav Award is given to any Indian citizen writing in the subject of technology or science. Souvenirs are also given to all those who receive this award. Its basic objective is to advance the Hindi language in the field of technology and science.

The Rajbhasha Kirti Award is given to limited departments, for their best work done in Hindi.

Importance of Hindi

Many litterateurs tried to establish Hindi as the national language. In 1919, Gandhiji had asked to make Hindi the national language in Hindi Sahitya Sammelan. After independence, there was a lot of discussion on the question of which language should be made the national language in 1949. Finally, it was decided by the Indian Constituent Assembly that the national language of the Union would be Hindi. However, when Hindi was introduced as the national language, non-Hindi-speaking states opposed it and demanded the status of the national language to English as well. Due to this, English also had to be given the status of the national language. Thus, both Hindi and English became the national languages of India.

Celebration

Hindi Diwas reminds us of our true identity and unites the people of the country. Hindi Diwas is a day that inspires us to have a sense of patriotism. Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year to emphasize the importance of Hindi and to promote it among every generation. Hindi diwas is celebrated in schools, colleges, etc. Hindi Diwas is also celebrated at the national level. On this day, the President of the country gives awards to those who have excelled in any field related to the Hindi language. Students are taught to have respect for Hindi and the use of the Hindi language. Debate competitions, poetry competitions, story competitions, speech competitions, etc. are organized in schools and colleges on this day, besides other programs are also presented. Teachers also give speeches to emphasize the Hindi language. Many schools have a Hindi essay competition. On this day, women wear saris and men wear kurta pajamas which is the Indian dress.

Many writers, including Mahatma Gandhi, Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Seth Govind Das, etc. worked tirelessly to make Hindi the official language. After attaining independence, Hindi was given the status of an official language due to these efforts. However, at present, the Hindi language is not being given much importance. People are giving more importance to the English language than Hindi, due to which English has had a great impact on Hindi and many words of Hindi have been replaced by English. Hindi has been made the official language but the purpose with which it was made a national language has not been achieved. Therefore, we should understand our duty to appreciate Hindi and respect it. Today, a lot of attention is paid to foreign languages, but no special attention is given to the Hindi language. We should not forget the Hindi language. Hindi is our national language, we should respect our national language because Hindi reflects our culture and civilization. Celebrating Hindi Diwas is an effort to promote the Hindi language.

Why is Hindi Diwas Observed – Essay 1 (250 Words)

Introduction

Hindi Diwas is observed every year in India on 14th September, to promote the mother tongue and also to make people aware of its benefits and value. It was on the same day in 1949 that the Indian Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language of India.

Why is Hindi Diwas Observed on 14 th September?

14th September is the birth date of Beohar Rajendra Simha, a notable Hindi writer born on 14th September 1900.

Mr. Simha played a crucial role in crusading for the adoption of Hindi as the official language. He traveled throughout the country to garner support for Hindi. Efforts of Mr. Simha and others were finally rewarded when the Indian Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi (Devnagari) as the official language of India on 14th September 1949, the birth anniversary of Mr. Simha.

Opposition from the States

Adoption of Hindi as the official language faced stiff opposition from many Non-Hindi speaking states like Tamil Nadu, where English was widely used as the official language. Oppositions were also made against the government’s efforts of making Hindi a compulsory subject in schools. The agitations forced the government to withdraw a compulsory Hindi order and make it optional in schools.

India is a country rich in diversity with many languages, cultures, religions, and ethnicities. But, Hindi is the most popular and widely used language in the sub-continent. It not only deserves the status of an official language but also needs to be kept alive by promoting and encouraging new writers and poets.

Institution of Hindi Diwas – Essay 2 (400 Words)

Hindi Diwas is observed on 14 th September every year on the birth anniversary of a Hindi writer Beohar Rajendra Simha. Mr. Simha was instrumental in garnering support for the adoption of Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language of India.

Institution of Hindi Diwas

The idea for adopting Hindi as the official language of India was first made by Mahatma Gandhi in 1918 during the Akhil Bhartiya Hindi SahityaSammelan.

Subsequently, Beohar Rajendra Simha, who was an eminent Hindi writer, took the responsibility of campaigning for Hindi as the official language. He took others like Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt, and Hazari Prasad Dwivedi; along in his campaign for Hindi. He also traveled far and wide to other states of India, garnering support for the adoption of Hindi as an official language.

Efforts of Mr. Simha and several others finally paid off, on 14 th September 1949, when the Indian Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language of the Republic of India.

It was also a tribute to the contribution of Mr. Simha to Hindi literature and his efforts for making Hindi an official language, as 14 th September was also his birth date.

Events and Awards

Several literary events are held on Hindi Diwas. Either they are sponsored by the government or other literary organizations. Essay competitions, speech, and poetry competitions are held in colleges and universities.

Some major awards distributed on Hindi Diwas are given below-

  • Rajbhasha Gaurav Award

This award is given for original book writing in Hindi in genre – knowledge, travel, science, etc. It entails a cash prize and a certificate for the encouragement of the writers.

Essay on Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas: History, Celebration and Significance – Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words)

Hindi Diwas is observed on 14 th September every year to commemorate the adoption of Hindi (Devnagari script) as the official language of India. The Legislative Assembly of India passed a resolution in this regard on 14 th September 1949.

Hindi Diwas – History

Nearly four decades before the independence, Akhil Bhartiya Hindi SahityaSammelanor All India Hindi Literature Conference, was established on 1 st May 1910. It was constituted to promote Hindi and also to encourage writers.

Attending a conference in 1918, Mahatma Gandhi had advocated for establishing Hindi as an official language of India as it is the language of the masses.

At the time of independence, choosing the official language was a bone of contention for the constituent assembly. Many freedom fighters, Hindi laureates, etc advocated for Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language. Some of the famous names crusading for Hindi to be adopted as an official language of the Republic of India were – Hindi literary writer Beohar Rajendra Simha, novelist Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, freedom fighter DattatreyaBalkrishnaKalelkar and Hindi poet Maithili Sharan Gupt among others.

The efforts of Beohar Rajendra Simha in this regard were the most notable of them all. He toured extensively to southern India collecting support for Hindi. He was also the President of Akhil Bhartiya Hindi SahityaSammelan.

The efforts of Beohar Rajendra Simha bore fruits when the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language of India on 14 th September 1949, on the birth date of Mr. Simha.

Celebration

Many events are held all throughout India on the occasion of Hindi Diwas. Official language week is also held in schools, colleges, and offices. Events like poetry competitions in Hindi and essay writing, etc are held to encourage students and others for using Hindi as a communication language.

Masses are told about the literary richness of Hindi and the benefits of using it. Debates are organized by several Hindi organizations and the government, in which people are told to keep Hindi alive by using it often in vocal and written communication.

During the days of celebration, government employees are used to using Devnagari Hindi as the language for all communications. Several awards like the Rajbhasha Gaurav Awards, Official Language Award are distributed.

Several political leaders both from the ruling as well as opposition parties take part in several celebratory events to promote Hindi and encourage writers, poets, and laureates.

Significance

Hindi in Devnagari script is the widely spoken language in the Indian subcontinent. It is also one of the oldest languages, developed in 1st to 4th century CE.

According to a survey around thirty crore people in India use Hindi as their mother tongue. Another forty crores use any one of the fifty dialects of Hindi.

Despite being so popular a language Hindi is losing its hold and is dying slowly due to the increasing popularity of English. Today English is widely used in schools, colleges, and universities of India. It is also the only official language used by private organizations and business houses. Though English is the need of time, it should not be promoted at the cost of Hindi.

Hindi Diwas is very important for it keeps Hindi alive among the masses and is very significant in promoting it. People realize the value of their mother tongue and make efforts to elevate it and keep it alive.

Hindi is the mother tongue of almost 50% of the people of India and also Devnagari is one of the oldest and widely spoken languages. If Hindi loses its sheen, it would be equal to the nation losing its identity. Therefore, it is important to celebrate Hindi Diwas with complete dedication and honesty.

Hindi Diwas Essay 1 (200 words)

It was a moment of pride for the Indians when the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as the official language of the country. The Constitution approved the same and Hindi written in Devanagari script became the official language.

14 th September, the day the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as its official language, is celebrated as Hindi Diwas each year. Many schools, colleges and offices celebrate this day with great enthusiasm. These places are decked up for the celebration and people come dressed in Indian ethnic wear. It is a day to stress upon the importance of Hindi language which is losing its significance in the country where English speaking population is considered smarter. It is sad to see how during job interviews, people who speak English are given preference over the others. It clearly shows that employers mistake a person’s English language skills for their knowledge about the task at hand. It is time to overcome this biased attitude.

Hindi Diwas Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

The constitution of India adopted Hindi written in Devnagari script as the official language of the country under Article 343 back in January 1950. With this, both Hindi and English began to be used officially at the Union Government of India level. Hindi Diwas is observed on the 14 th of September each year as on this date in the year 1949 the Constituent Assembly of India adopted our mother tongue as the nation’s official language.

The Importance of Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is celebrated to rejoice the day Hindi became the official language of our country. It is also observed each year to stress upon the importance of Hindi and promote it amid the generation which is way too impressed with English. It is a way of reminding the youth about their roots. No matter where we reach and what we do, if we remain grounded and in-sync with our roots, we stay unshakable. Each year, the day reminds us of our true identity and unites us with the people of our country. No matter, wherever we go our language, culture and values must stay intact and the day serves as a reminder for the same. Hindi Diwas is one such day that instils us with patriotic feeling.

In today’s times, there is an inclination towards English which is understood as it is used across the world and is also one of the official languages of India. This day is a small effort to remind us that Hindi too is our official language and holds as much importance.

While English is a globally used language and the importance of the same cannot be overlooked, we must not forget that we are Indians first and must respect our national language. The adoption of Hindi as an official language proves that the people in power value their roots and want the people of their country to value them too.

Hindi Diwas Essay 3 (400 words)

Hindi Diwas, celebrated on the 14 th of September each year, is a way to cherish the Indian culture and honour the Hindi language. This day in the year 1949, Hindi was adopted as the country’s official language by the Constituent Assembly of India.

Hindi Diwas – The Celebration

Hindi Diwas is celebrated in schools, colleges and offices. It is also celebrated at the national level wherein the president of the country gives awards to people who have achieved excellence in any field pertaining to the Hindi language.

In schools and colleges, mostly the management organizes Hindi debate, poem or story telling competitions. Cultural programs are also held and the teachers give speech to emphasize the importance of Hindi language. Many schools host inter-school Hindi debate and poetry competitions. Inter-school Hindi essay and story writing competitions are also held. It is a day to honour the Hindi language which is losing importance especially among the new generation.

The day is also celebrated in the offices and many government institutes. To rejoice the Indian culture, people come dressed up in Indian ethnic wear. Women are seen dressed up in suits and saris and men are dressed in kurta pyjamas to add to the essence of the day. Cultural programs are held and people are enthusiastically seen taking part in the same. Many people come forward to recite Hindi poetry and talk about the importance of staying in-line with our culture.

Hindi – The Most Widely Spoken Language in India

Hindi is undoubtedly the most widely used language in India. Even though there is an inclination towards English and its importance is emphasized in schools and other places, Hindi stands strong as the most widely spoken language in our country. In the Census held in 2001, more than 422 million people mentioned Hindi as their mother tongue. No other language in the country is used by over 10% of the total population. Most of the Hindi speaking population is concentrated in Northern India.

Hindi is the official language of many of the Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttrakhand and Jharkhand.  Bihar was the first state in the country to adopt Hindi as its sole official language. Bengali, Telugu and Marathi are the other widely spoken languages in the country.

Hindi Diwas is a day to revisit our cultural roots and celebrate its richness. Hindi is our mother tongue and we must respect and value it.

Hindi Diwas Essay 4 (500 words)

Indians are highly impressed with the ways of the west. They want to dress up like the people there, follow their lifestyle, speak their language and copy them in every respect. What they do not understand is that the Indian cultural heritage and values are far richer than that of the west. Hindi Diwas, celebrated on the 14 th of September each year is a way to celebrate the Hindi language and the Indian culture.

Hindi – The Fourth Widely Used Language in the World

Hindi is known as the fourth widely used language in the world. While India has the highest Hindi speaking population, other countries where it is widely spoken are Pakistan, Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana and Suriname.

People worldwide love Hindi songs and Hindi movies which clearly defines the fondness of this language.

Hindi – Not Given Preference

Unfortunately, even though Hindi is the fourth widely spoken language in the world, people in the country of its origin do not give it the importance it deserves. From school to college to the corporate offices – it is English that is given more preference and Hindi takes a back seat. It is quite common to see parents, teachers and everyone around emphasizing on the importance to learn both written and spoken English as it helps a great deal in securing a job. It is sad to see that even for jobs and educational courses that require people to be smart in other respects, the employers choose them based on their English speaking skills. Many people lose an opportunity to work just because they are not fluent in English even though they have a good knowledge about the task to be accomplished.

Hindi Diwas is an attempt to awaken such people and instill them with respect for the Hindi language.

Special Events Related to Hindi Diwas and Importance of Hindi

Many schools and other institutions are known to celebrate Hindi Diwas each year. Here is a look at the special events that have been conducted in the past in honour of this day:

  • Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh even went on to seek official language status for Hindi at the United Nations.

Hindi Diwas is celebrated with great zeal at various places however many people in our country are still not aware about the day and many others do not consider it significant. It is time people must recognize the importance of this day as this is the day to rejoice our national language and our cultural roots.

Hindi Diwas Essay 5 (600 words)

Hindi Diwas is celebrated on 14 th September each year to honour the language and the day it was declared to be one of the official languages of India. The fourth widely spoken language in the world sure deserves all the respect it has been given by marking a special day to celebrate its importance. There are a number of interesting facts about this language that makes it unique.

Hindi Diwas – A Great Step

The fact that Hindi has been sanctioned as an official language in India is great. However, what is even greater is the decision to celebrate the day as Hindi Diwas each year. Hindi Diwas is a reminder that no matter where we reach, we must not lose touch of our roots and culture. It is what defines us and we must rejoice it. The day is celebrated with zeal in various government institutions.

Interesting Facts about the Hindi Language

There are several interesting facts about the Hindi language. Here are a few of these:

  • The name, Hindi has been derived from the Persian word, Hind that means Land of the Indus River.
  • Hindi is basically one of the members of the Indo-Aryan languages of the Indo-European family of languages.
  • The language does not include any articles.
  • Many words in Hindi draw inspiration from Sanskrit.
  • Hindi is written in a purely phonetic script. The words in this language are pronounced exactly the way they are written.
  • Many words used worldwide that are mistaken to be English words are actually from Hindi language. Some of these include jungle, loot, bungalow, yoga, karma, avatar and guru.
  • In Hindi, all the nouns have genders. They are either feminine or masculine. Adjectives and verbs in this language vary based on gender.
  • It is among one of the seven languages that can be used for making a web address.
  • Every sound in the world can be written in the Hindi language.
  • Hindi language is not just used in India but in various other countries around the globe including Pakistan, Fiji, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates and Australia.

Schools Must Celebrate Hindi Diwas

It is unfortunate that even as Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India and has also been sanctioned as one of the official languages of the Republic of India most schools in India treat it as unimportant. English is given more significance and stress is laid upon learning both spoken and written English.

Children, these days, grow up with a mindset that a person who speaks English knows everything and is better in every respect than those who are not fluent in the language. Those who choose to speak in Hindi during the interviews or elsewhere are looked down upon. This mindset should be changed. It is true that English is a global language and is given preference especially in the corporate world and it is not wrong to hone the students’ written and spoken English. However, they should not be given an impression that Hindi is lesser than English in any respect. It is time the students must be taught to value and respect both the languages alike.

Just as the schools conduct fun activities and cultural programs on other special occasions such as Diwali, Independence Day and Janamashtami, they must also celebrate Hindi Diwas to rejoice our mother tongue.

Hindi Diwas is a great way to pay respect to our national language, Hindi. The newer generation is fascinated by the western culture and English language and is following them blindly. This day is a good way to remind them of their roots which is important in building their character.

Long Essay on Hindi Diwas – Essay 6 (1100 Words)

“Hindi Diwas” is an annual event celebrated in India on 14 th September to commemorate the adoption of Hindi as the official language of the Republic of India. Hindi is one of the most popular and widely spoken languages of India. The events of Hindi Diwas are mostly funded by the central government or other voluntary organizations. Awards are conferred to writers, poets and others for distinguished work related to Hindi.

Hindi Diwas – History

Every year 14 th September is celebrated as Hindi Diwas by the Government of India. This is done to commemorate the adoption of Hindi as an official language of the Republic of India by the Constituent Assembly on 14 September 1949.

On this day the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of India. It is an ancient Hindi, left to right righting system developed during 1 st to 4 th Century CE. In comprises of 47 primary characters, 14 vowels and 33 consonants.

However, the adoption of Devanagari Hindi as the official language of India wasn’t easy and it took rigorous campaigning, lobbying by several supporters of Hindi.

When India gained independence, choosing the official language became a contentious issue for the government of India, as India was home to hundreds of languages spoken throughout its length and breadth.

There were protests by different ethnic groups against the establishment of Hindi as the official language. Many stalwarts, the most prominent of them, Beohar Rajendra Simha along with Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Seth Govind Das and Kaka Kalelkar rallied through India, campaigning for adoption of Hindi as the official language.

At last, their efforts bore fruits and Hindi was adopted as an official language by the Indian constituent Assembly on 14 th September 1949, which was also the 50 th birth anniversary of Beohar Rajendra Simha. The adoption got the formal consent by the Constitution of India when the latter came into effect on 26 th January 1950.

On the recommendations of the then Prime minister, Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Hindi Diwas was celebrated on 14 th September 1952.

Significant Events on Hindi Diwas

Many notable events are organized in schools and colleges throughout the country on Hindi Diwas. Students are briefed about the history of Hindi and the efforts of several stalwarts for its adoption as the official language. They are asked to respect the language and also to converse in Hindi on daily basis.

The main motive of the events is to increase the popularity of Hindi and make it more widely acceptable and respected language. For this many Hindi based competitions are organized like Hindi essay writing, Hindi poetry, Hindi debate, dictation and Hindi typing etc. Sometimes, “Hindi Week” is also organized to extend the events over a period of a week and also to make them more effective.

Awards are also conferred to persons making distinguished contribution in any of the fields pertaining to Hindi. Some of the most important awards include Rajbhasha Awards, Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and Raj Bhasha Gaurav Puraskar. The last two awards have been previously called “Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puraskar” and “Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya Gyan-Vigyan Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar” respectively.

Hindi Diwas – Significance

Despite being the third most widely spoken language after Mandarin Chinese and English, there is a significant scarcity of the people who could fluently read, speak and write Hindi.

As English gains popularity in Indian sub-continent, Hindi is gradually losing its ground and its future existence is also threatened. It is feared that if the things continued at the same pace then in coming years Hindi might completely be extinct. Thus, there is a need to support Hindi at war footing to prevent it from extinction.

The day brings a sense of responsibility to all the people who know Hindi language. They are encouraged to adopt Hindi in speaking, reading and writing, in their every day works, as a gesture of respect for their mother tongue.

There is an urgent need to promote Hindi not only in India, but also in the world, in order to keeping it from extinction.

Despite persistent efforts by the Government of India, to get Hindi recognized as the official language of the United Nations, Hindi still struggles for its recognition.

General public, Government and Private offices are encouraged to use Hindi as the official language instead of English, atleast for a day. The message is sent that Hindi could be saved from extinction only if we start speaking, reading and writing in Hindi as much as we can.

Awards are conferred to encourage people doing notable work in Hindi, in order to inspire and encourage them to continue their work and also to spread awareness about the language.

How to Observe Hindi Diwas – Activities

There are several ways in which you can show you love and respect for your mother tongue. Some of the easiest and effortless ways are given below-

1) Learn New Words

No matter how well you command a language, there is always something left to explore. Hindi is a wide language having huge vocabulary of words. Know some new words and play with them, by making sentences, poems etc.

2) Read Hindi Literature

Many books have been written in Hindi by notable or not so popular Hindi writers, on variety of subjects. There are story books, adventure, suspense, science fiction, religion etc. Pick your favorite genre and enjoy the read.

3) Speak/Write Hindi

The best way to learn or promote a language is to speak and write in it. Speak Hindi in your school, college, office etc. Write in Hindi, a paragraph or two on any of the subject of your choice. You can write a story, a small poem or whatever you wish to write.

4) Promote Hindi

Hindi is at a stage when its wide spread promotion is required to prevent it from getting extinct in future. Promote Hindi in whatever way you can – read, write, tell others about the significance of Hindi, organize a small Hindi debate in your office, class or community etc.

5) Tweet in Hindi

Most of us spend a good amount of time on social media. Hardly a day passes when we do not tweet or reply or express concern over an issue. But, most of those tweets are in English. Let us vow to tweet in Hindi on Hindi Diwas.

Despite being the third widely spoken language in the world, Hindi is on the verge of extinction. Widespread use of English in India is one of the main causes for depleting Hindi popularity. Today, English is used in all schools, colleges, government and private offices etc. Such huge acceptability of English has hugely threatened Hindi which faces extinction, if not provided enough leverage for its promotion. Therefore, annual “Hindi Diwas” celebrations are like a new lease of life to the mother tongue.

(Importance of hindi language)

8.Speech Writing : “The Importance of Hindi language”

short essay on hindi language in english

Language is all important. It is the common language which binds the people together. It gives them a sense of oneness. You are Prashant Abuja; your name has been selected for declamation contest on Independence day. Prepare your speech highlighting “The Importance of Hindi language”.

Ans.                                                      “The Importance of Hindi language”

When a country has its own currency, flag, and national language, it is called a nation. Language speaks about the nation’s valour and strength. it develops in them the spirit of unity. Our country, in which so many disruptive elements are at work, urgently needs a national language. Unless all the people feel themselves to be the sons and daughters of the same motherland. Our freedom itself would be in peril. Our country which achieved its freedom sixty eighth years ago, can become strong and powerful only through a common national language.

The government of India ha» accepted I Hindi as the national language of the country. This is quite correct, for Hindi is spoken and understood by the majority of the people. It is the language of the biggest states of India. The literature of Hindi is quite rich. Hindi and Sanskrit go hand in hand. With only a little effort one can acquire a working knowledge of Hindi. Hindi is subject to face criticism on the basis, it’ Hindi is made the national language. India will not progress in science and technology. Her relations with foreign nation will not be as happy as they are now. They fear, if once Hindi becomes the national language, the Hindi speaking people will become the rulers of the non-I Hindi people. It was this fear which resulted in anti-Hindi riots in the South. There was much arson. Bloodshed and looting. Such fears are stumbling blocks in the way of the progress of Hindi which is the constitutionally recognized national language.

But such criticism of Hindi is not all unfair. There is sonic truth in a. The interest of the people who live in non-Hindi speaking areas must be safeguarded. Intensive efforts should be made by the Government to popularize’ Hindi in these areas. We are glad to note that the Government is already doing so. More and more people are learning Hindi there. Arrangement for free coaching of Hindi must be made. Under no circumstances should it he imposed by force, as this is likely to weaken the tinny of the country.

Essay on Hindi language

Official Language Hindi : Status and Conflict Full Essay /
