64 Examples of Social Issues Topics for 2024

May 21, 2024

Writing assignments asking students to engage with social justice/social issues topics target skills vitally important to success in college and beyond. They require writers to demonstrate critical, ethical, and dynamic thinking around demanding topics that present no quick and easy solution. Often, they will call for some amount of research, building textual and media literacy and awareness of the research process. In other words, these kinds of essays can be valuable in teaching students how to think and learn for themselves. But another, underappreciated learning outcome of these essays has to do with their function as communication.

This last feature can be easy to overlook in the context of writing assignments. Questions of audience, authority, and impact seem less significant when you know your teacher must read your essay. However, taking these questions seriously can not only enhance your odds of writing an excellent essay, but could also foster skills instrumental to real-world writing situations.

This article provides a list of social justice topics carefully selected to demonstrate the range and scale of available subjects. It also explains how you might approach writing about these issues with an eye for defining them and understanding the audience. Identifying a great topic that interests you enough to write about is an important early step. But what’s equally or even more important is to understand how to write about it clearly, directly, and persuasively.

How to Write a Successful Essay Grappling with Social Issues Topics

Writing about social issues topics is best improved through asking questions about purpose, context, and outcome. Why this topic and not another? Who is the audience, what do they know, and where might they stand on an issue? What are the typical ways others address the issue? What knowledge, perspective, or plan of action has been missing from that conversation? Why is this topic important to think about? Why is this essay important to read? These questions are crucial to delimiting which social justice topics to focus on and the strategy for writing about them. Answering them in the process of selecting a topic and developing a writing plan can help achieve the following components of good essays:

1) Defining the Issue

A frequent problem with student writing involves tackling questions or issues that are overly broad or vaguely defined. When selecting from social issues topics, it’s actually a smart strategy to think small. Rather than purporting to solve world peace, essays work better when drilling down into more localized and easily defined issues. This will help to communicate clearly what the issue is, convince the reader of its relevance, and successfully indicate that a short piece of writing could meaningfully contribute to the conversation around the issue.

2) Finding and Using Evidence

In many cases, essays on social issues topics will require some amount of research. When incorporating secondary evidence, it’s vital to find sources that are relevant to the topic and signal their credibility. However, even if research is not formally required, it can help toward establishing the purpose of a piece of writing within a larger discussion. Looking toward how others typically address an issue can help toward understanding whether an essay should aim to fill a gap in knowledge, supply a missing perspective, or outline actions that have not been proposed.

3) understanding audience.

Student essayists are not overly incentivized to think about questions of audience. However, understanding audience can help toward both defining an issue and acknowledging the purpose of writing. The most important thing to reflect on is the audience’s reason for reading a piece of writing. Why should they care about this social issue and what the essay will say about it? Understanding the reason for reading will help toward envisioning the ideal reader. Then, the essay’s language and arguments can be tailored to what that ideal reader already knows about the topic and their likely attitudes and beliefs.

4) Making an argument

This step follows the others and builds upon each. After clearly defining an issue that is appropriate in scope, an essay should clearly state its purpose or position. It should then interpret relevant evidence to support that position or fulfill its purpose. Then, it should aim to convince the audience by organizing evidence and reasoning into paragraphs structured around topic sentences that support the purpose or position. As these steps make clear, the argument is the essay. Making an argument entails justifying the act of writing itself, as well as the reader’s decision to follow the writer in focusing on an issue from a unique vantage point.

The following list of examples indicates some of the range of social issue essay topics. When considering these or other examples, writers should consider how they can foster purposive essays that understand how they are entering and changing the conversation around the issue.

Final Thoughts – Social Issues Topics

The above social justice topics provide a sense of the large range of urgent issues an essay might topic. However, it’s best to reflect on how a piece of writing can define an issue so as to make clear that it is capable of doing something meaningful with it. That could entail looking for similar, more niche issues to address. Or it could mean deeper thought about an issue for which the writer anticipates they could provide missing information, perspectives, or plans of action. While many readers care about many topics, it’s vital to understand how an essay can create a tangible relationship with an ideal reader. Only then can a writer spur others to think or act in novel and potentially transformative ways.

Social issues essay topics mean contemporary matters that affect society at large. They encompass many subjects, including poverty, racial and gender inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, climate change, and gun control. These topics offer an in-depth exploration of societal constructs, systems, and beliefs that shape the human world, encouraging critical thinking and fostering empathy toward diverse perspectives. Moreover, discussing hot issues allows people to identify societal imbalances and injustices while proposing solutions for a better and inclusive future. Thus, social issues essay topics can foster personal growth, broaden horizons, and serve as a platform to initiate dialogue and action on pressing problems or challenges in the global community.

What Is a Social Issues Essay Topic and Its Purpose

According to its definition, a social issues essay topic is a subject matter that explores societal challenges or concerns, focusing on issues that affect individuals, communities, or a whole world in general. For example, the main purpose for selecting a social issues essay topic is to critically examine a chosen theme, bringing awareness to root causes and implications while proposing solutions or offering insights (Mair & Seelos, 2021). Basically, common ideas encompass a broad range of subjects, such as poverty, inequality, education, climate change, human rights, and healthcare. Further on, these themes aim to foster a better understanding of selected subjects and encourage a meaningful discourse about crucial challenges that shape societies (Fecher et al., 2021). In principle, by engaging with social issues, students not only highlight injustices or shortcomings but also contribute to an intellectual development of readers, prompting them to reflect on possible changes. Moreover, the ultimate goal is to inspire action, policy reform, or a deeper comprehension of key complexities surrounding societal issues (Newton, 2023). Therefore, social issues essay topics help students to hone their critical thinking, analytical, and persuasive writing skills.

How to Choose

Selecting a good social issues essay topic requires careful consideration of relevance, depth, and personal interest. For example, students should choose a specific theme that addresses a current societal challenge, as this aspect ensures a subject matter remains timely and significant (Evans, 2021). Basically, subjects, such as climate change, systemic racism, or healthcare access, offer a broad scope for analysis and reflection. Further on, a selected issue should be sufficiently complex to allow for a critical examination of its causes, impacts, and potential solutions (Rudman et al., 2020). In principle, a well-chosen social issues theme invites a multi-dimensional approach, where various perspectives can be explored to provide a comprehensive understanding. Moreover, a student’s personal interest plays a crucial role in a selection process (Silver, 2024). As such, choosing a unique subject that resonates personally or aligns with one’s values or academic focus will lead to more engaging and thoughtful writing. In turn, some steps for picking a good social issues essay topic include:

  • Identify Current Issues: Choose a relevant idea that reflects ongoing societal challenges to ensure relevance and timeliness.
  • Assess Complexity: Select a social issues theme that allows for in-depth analysis and exploration of multiple perspectives.
  • Gauge Personal Interest: Pick a subject you are passionate about or personally connected to, which will enhance engagement and motivation.
  • Check for Available Research: Ensure there are sufficient sources and data to support your arguments and analysis.
  • Consider Scope and Focus: Opt for a compelling social issues topic that is specific enough to explore thoroughly within a paper’s length, but it should not be overly narrow.

Academic Level Difference

Academic level significantly influences a whole complexity and depth of social issues essay topics. At a high school level, social issues ideas focus on broad, introductory themes, such as poverty, bullying, or environmental protection, allowing students to explore basic causes and effects while developing foundational analytical skills (Newton, 2023). In contrast, undergraduate students engage with more complex societal challenges, requiring a deeper understanding of underlying factors, theories, and historical contexts. Further on, some subjects, like systemic racism or income inequality, demand more critical analysis and an entire integration of research to support arguments (Silver, 2024). At graduate and Ph.D. levels, key expectations increase substantially. Moreover, students are expected to engage with highly specific and nuanced social issues topics, requiring original research or contributions to the academic discourse (Evans, 2021). Basically, such themes might include examining an intersection of climate change policy and global inequality or exploring an impact of healthcare reform on marginalized communities. Therefore, as academic levels advance, social issues essay topics become more specialized, demanding greater critical thinking, in-depth research, and academic rigor from authors.

Social Change Essay Topic Ideas & Examples

1. introduction.

The word 'social change' is a term used to describe variations in, or modifications of, any aspect of the social processes, social patterns, social interaction or social organization. Social change occurs in every society, although at varying rates. Its speed and direction are affected by factors like cultural values and the processes that individuals use to change society. Social change can be a gradual unfolding of different ways of life or can imply a sudden, fundamental alteration of the social fabric. Theorists of social change agree that in most societies social change is initiated by action, ideas or technology. However, there is often a great deal of debate about what causes social change, and there are many theories which try to explain it. Classic sociologist Emile Durkheim suggested that social change is an organic process, and, by its very nature, is a slow, gradual process (Emile Durkheim, 1895). He believed that society is a system, and the people are the parts that make the machine work. Each part plays a necessary part, and there are 'needs' in society that must be met if the system is to function properly. He suggested that changes were disruptions and a temporary disorganization before the system adapted to a new steady state. On the other hand, Karl Marx said that the economic organization of society directly affects all other social institutions, and that societal change is driven by economic influences. Personal changes can also promote social changes. People going through personal changes in their life may change the way they interact with others. They may also change the way they view the world around them; this, in turn, may change the way others view the world. Out of the different theories of social change, I believe that Karl Marx's theory of social change is the most accurate. I think that this theory best balances the pros and cons of the other theories. Karl Marx was one of the founding fathers of sociology. He is often referred to as the revolutionary philosopher. This is partially due to the fact that his theories had to do with the nature of the individual and the nature of revolutions.

1.1 Importance of Social Change

Social change is a necessity for each society and group. As we proceed onward to the 21st century, in this day and age, we find that nations everywhere throughout the world are in a state of disturbance. The United States is compromising war on different countries. Terror-based oppressors, mass killers, militarism, wars, political destitution, social unfairness - these things are found in an expansive level of nations on the planet. Why is there an uproar on the planet? Numerous individuals accuse psychological oppression, defiance, absence of enlightened pioneers, yet the social scholars find that it is not these people's faults, it is the societal structure that causes the uproar and the social disparity. The conduct and convictions of the general population must be changed if we want to change the world and make the world a happy place. The soundness of the general public relies on the prosperity of each one of its parts. Also, the welfare of every part relies on the welfare of society overall. Accordingly, social change grasps in its fold those institutions which have a tendency to meet the natural needs of their individuals. It additionally implies change in the social order. Social order is the first harmony and concordance of society. When one sees the word order, one considers a specific method or pattern. Furthermore, when one sees the expression social order, it is apparent that it alludes to a specific arrangement or pattern of parts. Social order is a considerably more far-reaching concept than social control. Social control is that part of social order which endeavors to control and direct the activities of the individuals and groups in the matter of a society. It is assumed that rigid use of the methods for social control can lead to social changes. It is, however, unavoidable that some social order will come about if social control is applied. Social control may be defined broadly as those applied policies or courses by which individuals are guided and controlled in their behavior. If the instruments of social control are properly applied, it will over the long haul lead to the development of innovative institutions, changes in mindset and attitudes, and new patterns of behavior - really, it will lead toward social change. So for us to improve our world, we need to use the instruments of social change. Social change instruments include a wide range of ways and patterns of behavior which are available to individuals in their capacity as social creatures. The nine most important social change elements may be listed as follows: general opinion, acquisition policy, revolution, war, economic climate and technology, political policy, social movement, population, and transmission of society.

1.2 Historical Perspectives on Social Change

Social change is a complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon. Throughout history, social change has been a central point of contention among varying groups working for the evolution of societies around the world. There are many different factors which have given rise to and continue to fuel the fires of social change today. Some of these include technological advances, the impact of the global economy, the influence of political and social movements, and the importance of social and political revolution. There are a host of major social movements that have shaped the world we live in today and have had a significant impact on the world as we have come to know it. These include movements like the black civil rights movement, the student movement more commonly known as the hippie movement, the feminist movement and the push for women's suffrage, the sexual revolution, the anti-war movement, the labor movement, and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ rights. Each of these movements has represented a push for change towards a world that is more free, equal, and harmonious for all. However, they have each been met with fierce resistance and hostility from those who oppose that vision. In some cases, governments and other powers have worked to brutally suppress the momentum of social change, like in the case of the Iranian Revolution, in which the ruling monarch declared martial law, leading to the deaths of thousands. On the other hand, some who find themselves on the side of a particular social or political movement often question whether the movement as a whole is a legitimate catalyst for change. The historical perspective is important in understanding the present and the future of social change. By recognizing what has worked well and what has failed in the past, the people and organizations who seek to drive the world forward can begin to understand what will require change and adaptation going forward.

2. Causes and Effects of Social Change

Social change is a constant change of the society and culture. In time, so many aspects and things in our society have changed. Social change focuses on the fact that society and culture do not change, remain as usual, but social change is the way that society and culture can alter over time. No society has been able to endure social development. It is the initial task of politics to achieve and make a modern society that endures social change and encourages creativity. There are so many factors which are responsible for social change in human society. First of all, the main cause is discovery. It includes research, the development of different scientific facts, and discovery as well. Unemployment and poverty are also other factors that have contributed to social change. As we know, our society has enough technology for production, so it is a fact that only hard work is not enough for production. Due to insufficient technology and techniques, manpower goes in vain. This is called unemployment. Generation gap is also a big cause for social change. The older generation is used to their culture, their religion, and tradition, and on the other hand, the new generation is used to new trends and modern lifestyle. Generation gap can create misunderstanding, clashes, differences, and changes in the society as a conflict. Significant social, economic, and widespread changes can be achieved in the society through education. If the government wants to bring changes in the society, at the start and in the initial stages, they must spread awareness through education among the people in the society. The big and major changes in human society can be important and completely explained with the help of symbols. They can represent so many aspects of life and can change the social and societal system. For example, the symbols of fundamental rights such as equality and freedom are the generating and major forces of basic social changes. Social and industrial changes make a big change in the society. Before the industrial revolution, technology was very gradual and nearly static. But the industrial revolution and the great inventions of the last 200 years have been the fact and created the possibility of fundamental social changes. When it comes to the causes of social change, modern and credible sociology and socio study environment can give perfect and different conditions and situations. Any changes in professional and social groups in understanding the people of the society can cause factors for social change. It is not factual change in social life that leads to a change in our representation of the world, but conversely, it is alteration in socio theory. In this write highs to guarantor of a general wide range of theories. Economic sociological theories of social changes are all underwritten by the idea that societies are very different. The top challenge to this explanation is that economic change does happen in the past. For example, the collapse of the Roman Empire has been explained by the lead disturbances created and sucked in by changes in economic and social factors. Even societies progress in different deaths and it also leads to different means of existence. This and other social changes are what draw attention. In that case, social changes will both contract and accord under which is the case of mode. This is to have belief in technology and only technology of society which the mode of the longings is developed in which acquisitions can be a case of both cultural and social changes. This kind of changes depends upon change and crucial and capacity of society. The belief in computer and its changes would lead to a lot of systems being installed and changes being made. On the other hand, no case of the complete and ongoing process of change, this can ultimately lead to is not and fatalism must be avoided. Social change got its nuts and bolts, its early thinkers. The fathers and mothers of the discipline knew that there were deep-seated changes.

2.1 Economic Factors

There are various economic factors that can trigger social change. During the 18th and 19th century, the industrial revolution had brought a considerable change in the economic life of the people. The historical past suggests that the rise of the factory system is the immediate cause of social change. In the pre-revolutionary society, the social structure was mainly determined by the property differentiation. But the power and prestige were determined by the prestige or the occupations a man had rather than his wealth. With the advent of the factory system and the large-scale production and the introduction of the machines, the wealth which was in the control of a few people because of the land and the agriculture began to be in the hands of the people who had capital and enterprise. In consequence of this economic change, against the preference that the persons adhered to traditional views and the ideas, the new class emerged, who welcomed the industrialization and the technological change as the way of progress. This appreciation led to the marked ideological realignment of society. That means an organized alteration occasioned either by the summary of the new things or by the destruction or the replacement of the old ones, it is known as social change. A change is social whenever a significant number of members of society work with better facilities, living, and new things. The relationship among those individuals becomes diffused, but a common mode of life is established, it is called social change. The society which is based on agriculture changes to an industrial society. In such a society, with the help of the latest knowledge and the modern scientific trends, the industrial production is fostered. The use of technology leads to mass production, mass distribution, and mass consumption. As productivity increases, better wages are paid, and a rise in the yield is attained from the land. As there is good income, a good standard of life comes out. The people began to appreciate and share in the new culture. The introduction of new inventions and efficiency in work brings a transformation of the load of life. It influences our moods, desires, and frustrations. The speed breakers of life are removed. New activities start in our life. The dead customs are discarded. New interests are substituted for the old ones. In this way, the new society comes out in the place of the old society. Everyone is benefited from the change in the economic life and his mind is free from any type of burden. Kids get the latest type of education, adults get the latest avenues of work and employment. They take part in the world finally. The old people also change their routine. In this way, life is fashioned and life is flourished by every member of society. An economic change leads to social change. With the development of the industry in the modern age, the machinery has replaced the man and so the large industries have choked the small ones because an industry which produces more works better. Such type of powerful industries leads to unemployment. When the first labor-saving device was introduced in America during the 19th century, which was the cotton gin, it realistically increased the large-scale production of cotton. But as many slaves were not needed to keep up with the pace of the gin, the number and the demand for the slavery labor went up and this change sought to tear the north and the south state apart. It is said that the history of our society and the world we go through various types of changes every day. It is known as social change. The force of social change becomes more dominant and dynamic when factors like technology, population expansion, communication facilities, mass media, and industrialization, which involve the device of new industries, new methods of production, the introduction of power-driven machineries, etc., are introduced.

2.2 Technological Advancements

Another significant cause of social changes is the advancement of technology. Modern technology has revolutionized people's communication and social lives. Innovations such as the telephone, wireless internet, and online social networks have considerably changed how members of society interact and relate with one another. For example, the use of technological gadgets such as iPads and smartphones has become the order of the day. As a result, face-to-face communication has become less common as opposed to the past. Most members of society tend to invest much of their time on social media and the virtual interactions which are often short-lived as opposed to the more intimate physical experiences. Similarly, it has also been noted that technological advancements have led to the emergence of what is commonly referred to as a digital culture, a new culture that is founded on the importance of digital and online communication. This has greatly been associated with the style and nature of communication and relationships among people in contemporary society. The older methods of communication in the modern day have since been perceived to be outdated and less effective. For instance, most people consider using the internet and smartphones as the most convenient and easiest means of communication. This increased dependence on technology has eroded the need for physical effort in the modern day. For instance, in the past, when people wanted to get in touch with their family and friends, they would travel over long distances or even write letters that would take so long to deliver. However, the internet and mobile technology have since eradicated all these challenges. Through Skype, Facebook, YouTube, tweets, and other online platforms, it has become much easier and convenient to keep in touch with family and friends throughout. In the same vein, customers are nowadays able to purchase products and goods from the comfort of their homes through the internet. As a result, the need to make physical movement to the shopping malls or centers has since reduced to a large extent. This has led to a sedentary lifestyle and subsequently, national obesity and other health-related concerns have become a major health burden to the government.

2.3 Cultural and Social Movements

In comparison to the first two causes of social change, the focus of this essay will be to discuss the idea that any outside catalyst is almost always also in some way inherently tied to a prior and linked "social change." Cultural and social movements are one of the most significant drives for social change. Social and cultural changes and movements tend to be the result of many interrelated factors. These social movements are slow and gradual, but they can gain strength and can be a big process of bringing change with the help of government policies. There have been a number of different social movements that have appeared in different societies. The types of movements depend on who is participating in these movements and what the main goal of these movements is. But the most common goal is to change some of the existing conditions. Normally, these movements are based on people who have the same kind of ideology. Such movements are helpful to an outgroup, and they are coherent on their way to change the societies and the future. New ideologies and new philosophies sometimes have merged into existing traditions, and they have managed to create new social movements. These kinds of mergers have resulted in new occupations, and they can help to increase the economic welfare of those people and also bring about successful social change. For example, Martin Luther King was an African American, and he was facing the same problem as others. But he used his fear and grief to help fuel the fire of a movement that not only resounded throughout the whole United States of America but ended up leaving a major social change. He did not give attention to violent atmospheres but firstly and utmostly generated a 'non-violent' movement. Such kind of social movements started to effectively bridge the gaps between enforcing powers and the individuals going against the enforcing powers. He did not stop just at that time but allowed them to evolve into a new type of social movement that ultimately and eventually left a change. King has not just used Christianity to his advantage for the foundations of his movement, but he used it to bring together a new form of social change; a politics-based type of movement. Such movements and behaviors still occur today; they begin with an individual and small change, and they then evolve into landmark movements that are akin to King's era. This is why it is referred to as 'social change' by sociologists; changes happen every day. Any moment or on any day, there's bound to be that kind of victory for some movement, and some form of social amendments, whether it be directly or indirectly. During the last century, many people in Iran moved from Islam to different kinds of movements, and changes took place. Many of Iran's religious class and legal institutions have remained, and it is a deeply traditional society. However, Iran has changed and it started moving toward a more modern era; they have had a large and very successful social movement. When a social movement brings some changes in a targeted group or society for the long term and if they cause cultural impacts, it can be referred to as a 'cultural movement'. For example, during the 1920s, alcohol was perceived as a demon drink and an aching social problem, and the temperance movement in the United States emerged. After the prohibition period of alcohol, the temperance movements have declined, but the effort and forces the change of the society pattern is mainly affecting, and the movement can gain success and it is called a 'cultural movement'. These movements are experts in applying and convincing politicians and using propaganda to the society. Movements that are related to the application and changes of the society as a whole are defined as 'cultural movements'. These are the movements generated and directed by many leaders, and there is a quite amount of organization. People who participate in these movements know that it is dangerous and changes can hurt because these movements are not assumed to be simple; it is the mass movement and it is expert.

2.4 Political Factors

In addition to economic and technological factors, political factors also contribute to social change. The term "political" refers to the distribution of power and the exercise of that power on behalf of certain groups within a society. Political factors such as policy, power structures, and the functions of governments in different societies can all have a significant impact on the process and direction of social change. Policy refers to the laws and regulations of a society. For example, policies towards healthcare, education, and welfare can all greatly influence the nature and volume of social changes. In the United States, healthcare is provided by a complex network of different providers in both the public and private sectors. As a result, the society maintains an array of competing health policies and politics, and this can greatly affect the type of social changes - both positive and negative - that occur. Power structures within a society can also affect the impact of political factors on social change. A "power structure" refers to any particular interrelation between individuals that holds in any given society. For example, some societies may have a democratic power structure, one where "majority rule" is tempered by "minority rights". Culturally, democracies have generally been more receptive than authoritarian states to social movements and ideas from the public, such as the gay rights and pro-choice movements in the United States. On the other hand, some societies may have an autocratic power structure, where the few hold power over the many. In such societies, social changes may be much harder to bring about, particularly those that would serve to weaken the grip of the few on power itself. Finally, the functions of governments in different societies can also significantly affect the nature and rate of social change. For example, the type of government and its stance on a particular issue, such as a government's support for technological research, can either facilitate innovation or hold it back. Also, the reaction of the government to the advocacy of potential change agents, such as the support for anti-globalization protests or the condemnation of radical groups, can greatly influence the success of social movements that seek to drive change within a society. All these different political factors combine to have a great effect on the direction of social changes. For example, in the United States, the policy of certain elected officials and the stance of the Supreme Court on social issues such as same-sex marriage have, and will likely continue to, greatly shape the social landscape of the country. These political factors are interrelated with each other and with the political processes of other nation-states, so social changes in the modern world often have a complex, interconnected, and international dimension. The expansion of global communications, the growth of transnational social movements, and the phenomenon of globalization, where the relationships and development of different countries are becoming increasingly interrelated, mean that political factors are today more significant than ever in determining the outcomes of social change.

3. Challenges and Opportunities in Social Change

What are the challenges facing social change? There are many factors that may contribute to social resistance. Robert K Merton, a famous sociologist, suggests that it is important to recognize the various ways in which members of society actually respond to social innovation. He argues that, "in reality, different persons and groups do not face the same set of alternatives and constraints. Repetitive, constraining behavior may be supplied by the immediate social structure, or it may be implied in the actor's conception of the options which are open to him, or it may stem from his conception of the objective of action". According to Merton, many people are likely to engage in conformity, or traditionalism, or "ritualism", or they may work to actually try and change society through new innovations, depending on the response of others around them and their own personal goals. Merton's theory is captivating in that it provides a way to look at the predetermined ways people may respond to change in society. This is critical for those trying to make change happen in a modern setting because it illustrates a complex socio-psychological infrastructure, where different behavioral patterns are activated as they fall in and out of alignment. While many social scientists have believed that there are new and different types of reactions to the innovation of social change, Merton's typology has remained largely intact and viable throughout the years. However, one could argue that with the advent of modern technology, his ideas may not be as valid today as they once were. Today's society is characterized by a high degree of interconnectivity, globalization, and rapid cultural changes. This has led to new societies, new forms of communication, and more pressures to create change on a global scale. As Merton's theory largely reflects the times and society in which he was living, new research could potentially paint a very different picture. We could also examine in more detail the different types of resistance and acceptance of social changes by offering real-world examples and case studies. For instance, it would be intriguing to examine the political motivations behind those in power who resist social change, and the potential for empowering and motivating someone to make real change by allowing them to see the opportunities for 'innovation' as Merton discussed. Such an approach could create a far more in-depth understanding of the mechanics behind resistance to societal moves.

3.1 Resistance to Change

Next topic is the "Resistance to Change". In day to day operation, people work in an environment where the pace of social change is extremely fast due to the technological advancement and globalization. However, managing change effectively is known to be a key success for any organization. Change will be strongly resisted by the employees and employers, especially those who feel that the change is disruptive and hired. There are many reasons why the people resist change. First of all, they will feel out of control. Because any change will lead to somewhere unknown and thus, the employees or employers will have a feeling of losing control. This is because changes can often result in decisions being taken out of their hand and thus, cause it difficult for them to predict how the change will lead to. With being out of control, the individual will face a state of inner tension in which they cannot cope with dealing with the change. Secondly, most of the people generally have a fear of unknown. This is one common reason for the resistance to change. As far as the employees or employers do not know how the outcome of the change will result to and this might cause the individual to foresee the change as a threat. Next, the rational economic and the personal reasons are the major forces to cause the people to resist change. People are focusing everyday in the work place to achieve a better financial condition and also for higher working efficiency. By introducing change, people will have to change the way in which they are used to and requires a certain period of time for them to adapt to the new method. This will cause a loss of performance at the first instance and subsequently lead to a delay of the improvement. Also, there is an instinct for people to protect their current work methodologies because the experience is a tried and tested success to them; any change will just jeopardize their position. It is a fundamentally natural human tendency to refuse to forsee the failure.

3.2 Ethical Considerations in Social Change

Ethical considerations: What are ethics? They're the moral principles that govern a person's behaviour. Everyone has their own set of ethics and therefore it's very important to understand and respect the ethics of the people who will be affected by the change. If a social change is going to be effective, it's important that the process is open and inclusive. This means that everyone who will be affected by the change should be given the opportunity to have their say. This could include the group that is hoping to make the change or the groups that will be affected by the change. However, this can be a long process and it takes time to listen to people's views and allow everyone to express what they think. Sometimes it might feel easier to forget about listening to others' views, but it's very important in making sure that the change is approached in an effective and inclusive way. Social change can be led by the people who want to make a change (also known as grassroots change) or by social entrepreneurs who seek to change societies. However, social change can also be led by different levels of government and global organisations. These are groups of people who have put themselves in a position of power because people trust them to run our country or the charity effectively. Because they have a responsibility to the public, this is known as "duty ethics" and means that they must act in the best way for the most amount of people. One example of this is the Disabilities Discrimination Act. This was a big step forward for the UK as it meant that everyone had to start considering making changes to their daily lives to be more inclusive of people with disabilities.

3.3 Role of Leadership in Driving Change

There are different kinds of leadership and the approach each leader takes in driving change is unique. There is the autocratic leader who has control over the group, the democratic leader who facilitates change through participation, and the laissez-faire leader who uses a more personal approach. But how does the role of leadership interconnect with the process of driving change? Leadership is about setting a direction for change, developing a vision for the new norms, and creating a support base for the change and formulating a social architecture to facilitate the change. This comes in three ways: leadership creates major driver forces, leadership develops an enabling climate, and leadership formulates a social architecture (Lazer, 2010). These imply that a leader has a major role in convincing the members of a given group to work towards a common goal, invest in and sustain the change, but also set up a machinery that the change will be realized. Change in any society may not be realized if the leaders are not in tandem with the group or they are not in a position to formulate and address the necessary issues that will facilitate the change. As a unit of analysis, leadership as a driver of success in the transformation of any society is critically important. It has been said that change takes place when the forces promoting change surpass forces to maintain the status quo. Once a leader employs the major driving forces rule, then resistance to change, which is a major challenge particularly in modern leadership, will be addressed. When in 1859 Charles Darwin published his "The Origin of Species," he did more than provide a foundation for evolutionary biology. He made a profound statement concerning the nature, consonance, and the process of change. He said that it's not the most intellectual of the species that survives, or the strongest, but the one that is able to best manage change. He went ahead to say that change is the key driver to survival in the world of business as service delivery continually to the consumers is increased and that radical change was necessary for the improvement of a business. Such is the same case in driving and managing change in any organization. It's necessary that employees focus on the purpose of the change and how the change will be managed and show support for the change. Yet for the change to be successful, the organization and its management in general must come in conserving the change and providing an avenue through which the new conserved practices can be transformed into operations. The first and most critical element in driving change is to have a winning team that will drive and influence the new change. This winning team must be made up of people who are in a position to act, a group that has common goals, and a group that shows mutual interdependence as people work as a team. The winning team is believed to bring results because as a team it has diversity in temperament, it has diversity in behavior, in social work, and commonality of purpose. The sense of interdependence and trust among the leaders and the lead is very important and will greatly help to change the assumptions (Hull, 2010).

3.4 Impact of Globalization on Social Change

Globalization refers to the interconnection among countries worldwide through improvement in technology and international trade. Globalization has brought the fast spread of knowledge across the globe, thereby enhancing positive impact on social changes. Some of the positive impact as a result of globalization include the advancements of human rights, the control of harmful disease, and the spread of democracy worldwide. One of the entities that have been influenced by globalization is the institutions that manage the global social discourse. The institutions responsible for management of social discourse are mainly focused on addressing the negative perception on the impact of globalization on social changes. For example, scholars have argued that globalization has been contributed by the advancement in technology over the years. Technology has resulted in the reduction of costs in various ways, i.e., through the elimination of certain business activities and reduction of redundancy. These have made the industry more profitable, offering long-term solutions for global poverty. Due to globalization, there has been seen a significant change in the creation of social-political movements. The movements have been advocating for the idea of social justice for the suffering people. This has engaged the world community to embrace this kind of thinking in order to facilitate the positive impacts so as to reduce the prevailing inequalities within the world. Globalization has not only contributed towards the increase of social contact, but also the spread of cultural values between different nations and regions (Globalization and Its Impact on Social Change, 2010). As a result, some scholars are arguing that increased global interaction is increasing the cultural values to be similar and subjective to the spread of western ideology. On the other hand, some argue that cultural diversity is highly encouraged and employed in the evolution of humankind. Others say globalization of cultural values can have good effects than bad effects as a result of the harmonizing process that is generally followed in globalizing certain parts of cultural values. It is, however, accepted that culture and values are dynamic and will keep on changing so as to adapt to the new technologies and modes of interconnection. Through this modern way of social changes on cultural values as observable.
