Subject Verb Agreement
How to construct sentences with correct subject and verb agreement.
Every Sentence has a Subject
- The subject can be either singular or plural
Examples of a subject that is a singular noun: I, you, he, she, it, the girl, the boy, the cat, the dog etc.
Plural nouns:
The girls, the boys, the cats, the dogs, they.
Verb Endings
Singular Subject (3rd person) means -s ending verb
- Typically, if the subject is third person singular then the verb has an -s added to the end.
No -s attached to subject -s attached to the verb
1. The boy swims every day
2. The girl runs on Mondays.
3. She likes to read.
If the Subject is Plural...
- Then the verb generally does not have an -s at the end of the sentence.
- For example:
- The students read fiction novels over the summer.
The boys play instruments.
Plural subject verb without -s ending
Some verbs are Irregular and do not fit this rule
Singular: He doe s
Plural: They d o
Singular: She ha s
Plural: They have
Singular: He i s / She wa s
Plural:They are/ They were
The subject may not always be the first word in the sentence.
- You may have noticed that in most of these examples the subject is the first word of the sentence. However, this is not always the case.
- Sometimes the subject will come after the verb. This can happen if the sentence is a question or if the sentence starts with the word there.
- Some examples:
1. Why is the test taking the students so long?
2. Why are you late?
3. There is no excuse for not doing your homework.
Two or more Subjects joined with “or”
- If two or more subjects are joined with the word or, the verb agrees with the subject closest to it.
1. Either Jenny or the twins will eat carrots.
2. My sisters or brother reads to me every night.
Correct the errors
Directions: Copy down the following sentences. Next, identify the subject and verb of each sentence. If the sentence has no errors, leave it the way it is. If you notice an error in the sentence, edit it.
1. The classes I usually don’t like is social studies.
2. The forks and the knives goes in the top drawer.
3. Tom and Matt have English papers due today.
4. The students eats lunch at 12:45pm.
5. Everybody understands grammar.

What, Why, and How? GRAMMAR: SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT 14
Subject-Verb Agreement What are they? In the present tense verbs must agree with their subjects: both must be singular, or both must be plural. I breathe the air. He breathesthe air. You breathe the air. She breathesthe air. They breathe the air. It breathesthe air.You must add an –sor –esat the end of the verb when the subject (or the entity performing the action) is a singular third person: he, she, it, or words for which these pronouns could substitute. To Create the plural/singular To make a noun plural, we usually add an –s or –es, as in the case of jar to jars or box to boxes. A verb is singular, by contrast, when it is matched with a singular subject. A singular verb, then, usually has an –s or –esending, as in the case of talks and fixes.
Subject-Verb Agreement Finding the subject and verb To successfully determine whether or not your subjects and verbs agree, you need to be able to locate them in your writing. The subject in a sentence is the agent that is doing whatever is done in the sentence. The verb is the action--what is actually done. Look at this example: - The zebra runs down the street. “The zebra” is the subject of this sentence, and “runs” is the verb. Use Pronouns to Help When the pronounshe, she or it are used as a subject in a sentence, the verb is always singular, and therefore will contain an –s or –es ending. - Hetakes the money. - Shestacks the papers. - Itchimes hourly. All other pronouns (I, you, we, they) require a plural verb (one without an –s or –es ending). - Theyskate until March if the ice holds. - Weborrow money to pay our loans.
PRACTICE Circle the correct verb for each sentence. Tip: write the pronoun above the subject to help you identify whether the verb should be singular or plural. ( ) 1. Starry Night ( contain / contains ) eleven stars and one swirling moon. ( ) 2. The hammers ( pound / pounds ) the nails until each corner is flush against the wall. ( ) 3. Van Gogh’s sister ( take / takes ) most of the credit for his genius. ( ) 4. The yellows in the painting ( swirl / swirls ) around the blue sky rather than the other way around. (Pause)
ANSWERS Circle the correct verb for each sentence. Tip: write the pronoun above the subject to help you identify whether the verb should be singular or plural.
Subject-Verb Agreement Complicated subjects Some subjects include phrases that might confuse you into choosing the wrong verb. The verb agrees with the subject, not the noun or pronoun in the phrase.
PRACTICE Fill in the verb for each sentence. (Pause)
ANSWERS Fill in the verb for each sentence.
PRACTICE Agreement Practice Paragraph: The Supreme Court Underline each subject once, each verb twice, and fix any incorrect verbs. The first sentence is done for you. (Pause)
