telstra 5g business plan

Telstra launches “ridiculously fast” 5G home and business internet plan

' data-src=

Telstra has officially launched its 5G broadband for home and business which offers super-fast internet speeds to eligible premises within Telstra’s expanding 5G coverage.

Telstra says customers can expect average download speeds of 378Mbps during the busy evening period between 7pm and 11pm.

And Telstra is keeping it simple – there is one plan for home and businesses which costs $85 a month with 1TB of included data which is enough for 330 hours of Netflix streaming.

Download speeds during testing ranged between 50Mbps and 600Mbps with upload speeds between 10Mbps and 90Mbps.

Telstra will supply the modem/router which includes a 5G SIM card that can be simply plugged in without the need for a technician and without running cables.

The included modem will also include a built-in router that will provide a wireless network.

There are no lock in contracts or exit fees. If you don’t like the service, simply send back the modem.

telstra 5g business plan

Those who sign up to the new Telstra 5G service will also receive the first month free.

This Telstra 5G offering comes after months of testing among a closed group of customers within Telstra’s 5G coverage map.

“5G Home Internet will allow most households to stream a 4K movie, jump into a video call for work and download a new game for your Xbox at the same time,” says Sanjay Nayak, Telstra’s fixed connectivity group owner.

“This is particularly useful if your existing broadband is not delivering the performance you need.

“5G Business Internet will allow small business customers to have multiple staff working at the same time and give them access to the speeds they need to be competitive and responsive to their customer needs.

“We speak to our current 5G Home Internet customers regularly, and feedback has been extremely positive – they are now able to work from home easier, streaming video is a lot faster, and things just work smoother.

“It couldn’t be easier to get going with Telstra 5G Home & Business Internet either, with no technicians required and a complete plug and play experience.

“Just find the spot in your home or business premise where you get the best 5G signal, plug the modem in, turn it on and you’re good to start browsing the web.”

Optus has been offering 5G home broadband for some time with two plans – $79 with unlimited data and a maximum download speed of 100Mbps or $89 with unlimited data and uncapped download speeds which is states at 210Mpbs typical evening speeds on its website.

The Optus plans also come with the first month free before the monthly fee is charged.

Telstra is first with 5G standalone network. What does this mean?

Telstra is first with 5G Standalone Network resized

13 May 2020

5g , telstra.

Telstra has hit another milestone along the journey to 5G by being first to complete a standalone 5G network. But what does this mean for Australian business and consumers?

5G Non-standalone v 5G standalone?

To understand the relevance of Standalone 5G, it is first necessary to know that 5G networks come in two formats: Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA).

Telstra is the first Australian carrier to complete a standalone 5G network, and also one of the first in the world to do so.

Non-Standalone: In a non-standalone network, 5G is built on top of a 4G network. Smartphones connect to 5G frequencies for faster connectivity speeds, but still use 4G for communicating with mobile towers and servers. Non-standalone 5G is what we've seen in Australia to date, and is still the basis of the 5G network for Optus and TPG/Vodafone.

Standalone:  As the name suggests, no longer relies on 4G networks. The biggest benefit of Standalone 5G is lower latency. In plain terms, latency is the time it takes for information to get from your device - phone, router, IOT sensor - to the wider internet and back again.

The typical latency for a 4G network is around 60 milliseconds, whereas 5G could eventually decrease this to as low as 1 millisecond. This massive decrease in latency will enable new technologies that require 'real time' processing and actions such as self-driving cars.

5g_tower

What does Standalone 5G mean for the Australian public ?

The accomplishment of a standalone 5G network has no immediate benefits for consumers or business, because there are currently no 5G-standalone devices that work with the network. Existing 5G-compatible devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 are still in testing with Telstra and will likely need a software update to work with standalone 5G. This is expected later this year.

When standalone 5G devices become available, new benefits will open up for consumers and business.

What are the benefits for business?

For corporates, a standalone 5G network is another milestone along the journey towards realising the promise of a 5G-enabled world.

The largest and most transformational benefits of 5G are only possible with standalone 5G, according to Telstra Group Executive, Networks & IT, Nikos Katinakos .

These benefits include ultra-reliable low latency, much higher capacity, massive machine type communications and advanced functions like network slicing.

"We’re already talking with some of our partners to see what they can do with this new upgrade to 5G. The capability is now in place for some exciting innovations from our enterprise business partners – for example, a branch office of a bank may be able to stand up and operate multiple applications and services using only a 5G Standalone capable device for network access, massively reducing the infrastructure required to set up."

Evaluate 5G in 2020

Telstra's completion of  a standalone 5G network is a clear indicator to business that it is time to get serious about evaluating the relevance of 5G, says Stephen Aravopoulos , managing director of Telstra Platinum Partner, MobileCorp .

"Early adopters are already engaged with Telstra to develop use cases for 5G. I know we are all busy just now with reacting to the demands of the pandemic but it is important to also keep one eye on the future. Evaluation of how 5G will enable or disrupt your business should be taking place now, in 2020, in preparation for what is fast arriving. "

MobileCorp has prepared A 5G Action Plan for Australian Business with specific relevance to the Australian marketplace. Download it here .

"When time is precious, it can be difficult to set aside that time to think ahead. The 5G Action Plan we have prepared will help speed up the process of understanding how to approach evaluating this new enabling technology."

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia began 5G trials with Telstra and Ericsson in early 2019

What are the benefits for consumers?

Initially the benefits for consumers are minimal but one immediate benefit is a result of the lower latency. Having a 5G Standalone internet connection will be similar in terms of latency to having a fixed line NBN connection.  This means greatly enhanced streaming services and online gaming. 5G will inevitably speed the transition away from expensive gaming consoles which are currently declining at 5%pa, and towards cloud gaming which is growing at over 15% pa.

What are Optus and the merged TPG/Vodafone up to?

Australia's other two 5G network carriers do not appear to have a Standalone 5G network for their radar. Optus' strategy is focused on Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.   TPG/Vodafone's MergeCo has only just emerged from its legal battle with the ACCC and playing catch-up with Optus and Telstra.

Optus Strategy

Optus strategy of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) allows 4G and 5G data to travel along the same path, quickly switching between the two depending on which one the mobile device is using i.e. a non-standalone 5G network. Optus CEO Allan Lew recently claimed Optus had " equivalent to what the leading provider (Telstra) has,” but conceded "the evolution may well be different."

Optus, is also focused on the upcoming auction of mmWave spectrum in 2021.  Lew said "access to mmWave spectrum will enable wireless enterprise services that could challenge the incumbent dominant provider of enterprise services – finally opening this market to competition."

Vodafone-TPG MergeCo Strategy

When given the green light to proceed with its merger in March 2020, the MergeCo immediately signalled that 5G was at the forefront of their plans. CEO of TPG, David Teoh, said the delay had given Optus and Telstra a head start which they were determined to catch.

“I believe that the ‘MergeCo’ has to strengthen and speed up the 5G roll-out to compete in the marketplace because there is enormous opportunity there. We need a good network and good product for the benefit of the consumer. We see tremendous opportunities moving forward.”

1000GB data

Your 5G Home Internet plan comes with a whopping 1000GB of super-fast data.

How much is 1000GB of data?

To give you an idea, the average Telstra 5G household uses  less than half of 1000GB  every month.

We estimate that you could do all the following activities and still use less than 1000GB in a month:

Stream HD videos for 350 hours or 171 hours for 4K video

Listen to 8,500 hours of music. That’s nearly a year’s worth of music

Post to social media for 5,600 hours

Send and receive 40,000 emails

  • Surf the internet for 2,000 hours

What if I use more than 1000GB in a month?

We’ll let you know when you’ve hit 50, 85 and 100% of your super-fast data. But your download speed will be slowed to 25Mbps and your upload speed to 5Mbps

Good to know

25Mbps download speeds are good for small households with 1-3 people using multiple connected devices. Meaning you can:

  • Work and study online while others browse.
  • Stream videos in Standard Definition (480p).

I’m a serious gamer, is the 5G Home Internet plan for me?

If you download your games 5G Home Internet can be a great option. But if you’re an online gamer and serious about possible latency, where every millisecond matters, this might not be the plan for you.

Things you need to know

Information about telstra internet plans.

An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your maximum attainable speed after connection and let you know if your line is not able to achieve the maximum speed of your plan.

The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn™  tier figures and ‘typical busy period speeds’ are not measures of customers’ actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds. In some cases, the nbn™ tier figures and the typical busy period speeds are similar. Find out more about speeds on the nbn network with Telstra

Plan prices

Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don’t like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons.  If you cancel, just pay out your device, accessories and services in full, and you will receive a pro-rata refund for your plan charge for the remainder of your month.

Speed Add-ons

Typical busy period speeds for the new nbn tiers Superfast and Ultrafast are an estimate only. We do not have sufficient data yet to calculate the typical busy period speed of these add-ons. Actual speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including in-home setup and wiring, For ordinary personal domestic use. For important information on speeds see nbn key facts sheet (PDF, 81KB)

If you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn network, nbn co may charge $300 to connect your premises to the nbn network. If applicable, we will bill that charge to you. Once you are connected to nbn fibre, you won’t be able to move to our copper network. Your connection technology type

Fibre to the premises (fttp).

FTTP technology runs an optic fibre line from the nearest available fibre node directly to your premises.

Fibre To The Building (FTTB)

FTTB technology runs an optic fibre line from the nearest available fibre node to your building’s communications room. From here, a copper line runs to your wall socket.

Fibre To The Node (FTTN)

FTTN technology runs an optic fibre line from the nearest available fibre node in your street, or a nearby street with a final stretch of copper to your wall socket inside your premises.

Fixed Wireless (FW)

FW technology starts at a Wireless tower. The tower sends the signal to a fixed antenna on your roof, which continues through internal wiring to your wall socket.

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

HFC technology runs an optical fibre line from the nearest available fibre node to your street. From here, a coaxial cable runs to your wall socket.

Fibre To The Curb (FTTC)

Optical Fibre leading to a small node in the telecommunications pit or mounted to the pole outside your premises. From the node, a copper telephone cable delivers the service to the wall socket inside your premises.

The nbn network

The nbn network has different wholesale speed tiers for different levels of online activity and households. Our nbn plans are based on those speed tiers.

Which nbn speed is right for you?

Use this quick guide to help you work out which nbn speed tier best suits your home and lifestyle.

Standard Evening Speed

25mbps download 4mbps upload.

Typical speeds (7pm - 11pm)

Good for smaller households with low data demands

  • Stream videos in Standard Definition (480p)
  • Stream a single video in High Definition (1080p)
  • Work and study online while others browse

Standard Plus Evening Speed

50mbps download 17mbps upload.

Typical speeds (7pm - 11pm)

Great for medium households with moderate data demands

  • Stream videos in High Definition (1080p) on two devices at once
  • Responsive online gaming
  • Work and study online while others browse
  • Download and upload files

Speeds experienced may be lower due to factors including in-home setup and wiring.  An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers, we will confirm your maximum attainable speeds after connection. Standard Plus Evening speeds are not available to most FTTN customers.

100Mbps download 17Mbps upload

Best for larger households with high data demands

  • Stream multiple videos in High Definition (1080p)
  • Stream videos in Ultra High Definition (4K)
  • Work and study online while others stream and game
  • Download and upload files

Speeds experienced may be lower due to factors like your in-home set-up and wiring and will be confirmed post-connection for FTTN/B/C. Plan available to HFC, FTTP and some FTTN/B/C customers. 100Mbps typical download speeds not available to most FTTN customers.

Premium Evening Speed

Speeds experienced may be lower due to factors like your in-home set-up and wiring and will be confirmed post-connection for FTTN/B/C. Plan available to HFC, FTTP and some FTTN/B/C customers. These speeds are not available to most FTTN customers.

What is Mbps?

Mbps, or megabits per second is how fast data travels along a network.

The typical evening speed on any plan is measured in Mbps; eg "50Mbps typical evening speed". A higher Mbps means a faster connection; lower Mbps means a slower one.

Mbps is also a measure of the capacity of your internet. Each thing you do online - watching a video, playing a game, posting updates - reduces your capacity.

Faster Mbps speed means more capacity, which allows more people and devices to use your connection at once.

All our plans include unlimited data, so you don’t have to worry about how much data you use.

  • No data limits
  • No excess data charges.

Why can’t I get this plan?

We only offer speeds that we’re sure your connection can achieve.

The maximum speeds available at an address are dependant on the technology used to connect the premises to the nbn network. They will be the same no matter who you buy an internet plan from.

This may be due to one of 2 reasons:

  • The technology at your address is unable to support the speeds included in this plan – so you’d be paying for speeds that you can’t achieve. We only offer you plans based on the maximum upload and download speeds allowable.
  • At some addresses, we’re unable to estimate the maximum speeds available until you’re on your new plan (particularly if you’re a new customer). Before then, we can’t be sure that the nbn connection at your address can achieve this plan’s speeds. We do this to ensure you don’t pay for speeds you can’t achieve.

Once you’re connected, if we determine that your technology can support this plan’s speeds, we’ll let you know.

Your maximum speeds

The speeds you experience may be lower than the estimated maximum speed ranges for your address, particularly during busy periods, and can be impacted by things like your own setup and wiring. We’ll use the latest information when you’re on your new plan to confirm the maximum speeds at your address.

When choosing a plan, you’ll see how the maximum speeds at your address relate to your plan options. This is important because you will not be able to experience the typical or maximum speeds of a plan if the speed available at your address are lower.

Additional nbn services

The maximum available speeds at your address shown are for your existing line only. If you need an additional line/service, we’ll let you know the maximum speeds of the additional line once it’s connected.

Do I need an additional service?

Most customers only need one service at their address. Having an additional nbn service at your address means you’ll have to pay for an additional nbn plan and install a new modem.

If there are no additional available nbn lines at your address, we may need to install a new one, which may increase the time to complete your order, and there may be set-up costs.

Each nbn line at your address could have different maximum speeds. We’ll ask at checkout about additional nbn services.

When choosing a plan, you’ll see how the maximum speeds at your address relate to your plan options. This is important because you will not be able to experience the typical or maximum speeds of a plan if the speed available at your address are lower.

Speeds at your address

Telstra smart modem, with 4g network backup..

Get advanced speed, range and reliability plus 4G mobile network backup if your nbn connection goes down. 4G coverage required. 4G speeds capped at 25Mbps downloads and 5Mbps uploads. Actual speeds may be lower.

Temporary pause on new nbn HFC connections

Due to an industry-wide hardware shortage, nbn co can't currently process nbn Hybrid Fibre Co-axial (HFC) orders for addresses that haven't had nbn HFC before. We'll let you know as soon as nbn co starts accepting these orders again.

Meanwhile you can still connect with Telstra on Cable, ADSL or Mobile Broadband, then switch to nbn HFC when it's available.

If the ADSL or Cable connection at your address has already been disconnected, you’ll still be able to connect to nbn HFC. To do this, call 1300 112 376 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

What are high speeds for?

They’re designed for busy homes that demand more from their internet connection. You can take up a speed add on when you're on our Premium plan, via the Upfront Internet Plan Ultimate on FTTP and selected HFC connections. To confirm if you can get Superfast or Ultrafast speeds, check your address.

5G Home Internet plan speeds

Your 5G Home Internet plan comes with 1000GB of data.

We estimate you could do all of these and still use less than 1000GB a month:

  • Stream HD videos for 350 hours or 4K videos for 171 hours
  • Listen to 8500 hours of music
  • Post to social for 5,600 hours
  • Send & receive 40,000 emails

If you go over 1000 GB you still get data access, but your download speed will be slowed to 25 Mbps.

Speeds experienced may be slower over Wi-Fi and can also be impacted by other factors such as the distance and line of sight between the serving 5G mobile tower and the modem, the number of users online, where your modem is located and how far you are from it, weather, congestions and your in-home set up.

Protect yourself from malicious content

What are the different types of Telstra internet plans?

What do you get with telstra internet plans, telstra internet deals, telstra plan features, telstra internet plan modems, telstra coverage map, how to switch to telstra internet.

  • Telstra internet FAQs

Telstra internet features breakdown

Telstra is a household name for mobile plans and NBN plans in Australia. Typically, Telstra NBN plans come at a premium but they also tend to have inclusions that help justify the comparatively higher price.

  • Telstra offers a near comprehensive range of internet services, covering NBN fixed-line, 5G home wireless, mobile broadband and even older technologies like ADSL2+ and cable .
  • All Telstra home internet plans come with a modem-router that’s compatible across internet technologies and includes 4G backup .
  • Telstra home internet plans include a home phone service with unlimited calls to local, national and Australian numbers.
  • Telstra NBN plans are among the fastest in Australia.
  • Telstra is one of 11 NBN providers that’s tracked by the ACCC quarterly in terms of download speed, upload speed latency and other performance metrics.

Telstra internet services are available to most Australians and geared towards those in metropolitan areas. Most Australians can sign up for either a Telstra NBN fixed-line or mobile broadband plan. Additionally, Telstra also offers 5G home wireless internet , cable and even older ADSL2+ to eligible homes.

If you live in a metropolitan area, there’s a good chance you can sign up for an NBN fixed-line plan with Telstra. This includes homes connected to the NBN via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) , Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) , Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC) , Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) or Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) technologies. Below is a list of the Telstra NBN fixed-line plans and the technologies that can access them:

  • NBN 25/5 : FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTB, FTTN
  • NBN 50/20 : FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTB, FTTN
  • NBN 100/20 : FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTB (selected), FTTN (selected)
  • NBN 250/25 : FTTP, HFC

Telstra also offers business NBN plans , including NBN 50/20 and NBN 100/20 options. Note that Telstra documentation also lists OptiComm fibre as a potential connection for eligible FTTP premises.

If you live in an eligible area, you may have access to Telstra 5G home internet. There’s only one plan available for eligible homes.

Telstra offers a range of data-limited mobile broadband plans in prepaid and monthly forms. Note that both prepaid and monthly mobile broadband plans are paid upfront. Prices vary based on the plan type (4G or 5G network) and the amount of data. Note that you’ll need a compatible SIM device (e.g. tablet, modem dongle or laptop) if you don’t purchase a Telstra mobile broadband plan with a modem.

A shrinking number of eligible homes can potentially sign up to a Telstra cable or ADSL2+ internet plan. Like Telstra NBN plans, cable and ADSL2+ plans come with a compatible modem-router as well as a home phone with unlimited calls to Australian numbers.

Telstra plans are typically feature-rich. While 5G home internet and mobile broadband plans are data-limited, all other Telstra internet plans have unlimited data. Telstra internet plans also typically don’t have a connection fee or a lock-in contract.

The main inclusion is a preconfigured modem-router for Telstra NBN, cable and ADSL2+ plans. Additionally, Telstra 5G home internet and mobile broadband customers on a monthly plan also get a preconfigured modem-router. Express postage is typically free for the modem-router.

Telstra NBN, cable and ADSL2+ customers have access to a home phone line, which includes unlimited standard calls to the following:

  • Australian local numbers
  • Australian national numbers
  • Australian mobile numbers
  • 30 minutes of standard calls to any country
  • Calls to 13-numbers
  • Calls to directory assistance

In terms of typical evening speeds (between 7:00pm and 11:00pm nightly), here’s what you can expect from Telstra NBN plans:

  • NBN 25/5: 25Mbps download, 4Mbps upload
  • NBN 50/20: 50Mbps download, 17Mbps upload
  • NBN 100/20: 100Mbps download, 17Mbps upload
  • NBN 250/25: 250Mbps download, 22Mbps upload

Those speeds may change depending on the NBN technology, particularly for FTTC, FTTB and FTTN homes for relevant plans. At the time of writing, the ACCC NBN data showed fast download and upload speeds for Telstra, plus fast webpage loading times (under three seconds) and low latency (under 13ms).

Telstra 5G home internet users can expect typical evening speeds of 336Mbps download and 44Mbps upload. Note that outside evening hours, speeds are between 50–600Mbps download and 10–90Mbps upload for Telstra 5G home internet.

ADSL2+ and cable speeds aren’t advertised but can reach a max of 24Mbps download and 1.3Mbps upload (ADSL2+), or 100Mbps download and 2Mbps upload (cable). Similarly, download and upload speeds aren’t advertised for Telstra mobile broadband plans but, depending on the price and type, they may include uncapped Telstra 5G speeds .

Despite having a data cap, monthly Telstra 5G home internet and mobile broadband plans don’t have excess data charges. Eligible Telstra mobile broadband plans are capped at 1.5Mbps speeds after the data allocation is exhausted. Telstra 5G home internet plans are capped at 25Mbps download speeds if you exceed the data limit.

Telstra isn’t a stranger to offering deals for its internet plans. If Telstra is offering any deals for its internet plans today, you’ll see them below.

Telstra perks start with discounts for bundled internet and mobile plans. Outside of the included modem-router and home phone line for eligible plans, Telstra internet plans also included network-level cyber security. Additionally, Telstra users can access Internet Optimiser on eligible internet plans. This feature lets you track online activities, prioritise internet bandwidth, pause internet activity or even block devices, and reduce latency for gaming devices.

Telstra Plus is a consistent perk for customers who sign up to the program. Earn and redeem points as part of the Telstra Plus loyalty program, plus get access to discounted tickets and event pre-sales. Telstra also has a trend of offering shorter-term perks, including promotional pricing as well as subscriptions to popular services like Binge and Spotify . New customers can also take advantage of a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

If you want premium inclusions, Telstra sells Fetch TV set-top boxes and channel packs, special offers for popular streaming services and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Telstra mobile broadband plans are compatible with international data-roaming packs.

Outside of prepaid mobile broadband plans, all Telstra mobile internet plans come with a compatible modem-router. For NBN, ADSL2+ and cable internet, it’s the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which is a dual-band WiFi 6 modem-router. The Telstra Smart Modem 3 offers wireless speeds up to 4800Mbps, has 4G backup (up to 25Mbps download and 5Mbps upload), plus one USB 2.0 port and four gigabit Ethernet ports.

Note that the Telstra Smart Modem is typically included with eligible plans for $0 but you have to return the device if you cancel your plan within 24 months (or pay a hardware fee).

Telstra 5G home internet comes with the Telstra 5G Internet Modem 2. This modem-router is a dual-band WiFi 6, which is compatible with the Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster for larger homes or those prone to wireless interference. Telstra mobile broadband plans have the most options and can be bought outright or paid off over 12, 24 or 36 months. Here are the Telstra mobile broadband modem options:

  • Telstra 4GX USB Modem (monthly and prepaid)
  • Telstra 4GX Hotspot (monthly and prepaid)
  • Telstra 4GX Wi-Fi Plus (prepaid)
  • Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro (monthly)
  • Netgear Nighthawk M6 5G (monthly)
  • Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro 5G (monthly)
  • Inseego MiFi X Pro 5G (monthly)

Telstra NBN, ADSL2+ and cable plans are available to eligible homes in metropolitan areas. Enter your address on the Telstra home internet page to see which types of Telstra internet are available at your address. Telstra mobile broadband and 5G home internet plans are offered on the Telstra mobile network, which is available to 99.5% of the population across 3G, 4G and 5G technologies. For an idea of Telstra mobile broadband coverage, check out the interactive map below. Keep in mind that the Telstra 3G network will be shut down in June 2024.

It’s a straightforward process to switch to a Telstra internet plan. Here are the steps to follow for a Telstra NBN, ADSL2+ or cable plan:

  • Choose the relevant priority-assistance option, then ‘Proceed to checkout’.
  • Register for a Telstra ID (or sign in with an existing one), then follow the prompts to complete your plan order.

You may be asked to verify your identity, income and/or employment details during sign-up. It’s an almost identical sign-up process for a Telstra 5G home internet plan or mobile broadband plan, except they don’t have the priority-assistance prompt.

Telstra Business Phone Plans

Posted by Dean Heckscher 30/06/2021

Regardless of the business, communication is the area that can make or break you. Communicating with clients, suppliers, customers and even your own staff allows the business to be productive, efficient and most importantly, stay in business. That’s why business plans from telcos exist – and in particular, Telstra Business plans.

With the way technology has evolved and integrated itself within both our personal and working lives, communicating has also become easier to do, with the majority of the population having access to a phone. As a result, having a suitable phone and phone plan has become essential for a successful business.

Despite the positive impact phones have on business, choosing the best phone plan for your business is a decision that you shouldn’t take lightly, with plenty of telcos offering deals and plans to suit all needs.  As one of the biggest telcos in Australia, it’s no surprise that Telstra has many options for your business, regardless of how big or small it is. With plenty of options for both established premises as well as those who are constantly on the move, Telstra is a worthwhile option to consider.

Telstra Business Plans

Telstra Business plans come in all shapes and sizes, regardless if you have to be on call 24/7 or simply work a few days a week. For those who also like a bit of play with their work, all Telstra small business plans include unlimited data within Australia (speed-capped at 1.5Mbps when you surpass your monthly data allowance) and data sharing between devices on the same account (although you can’t share unlimited data – not that you’d need to, because everyone would have it). Every plan except for the $55 small plan includes 5G access. Customers can add on the international calls pack for $10 per month, and get unlimited talk and text to 23 selected countries.

Telstra SIM Only Business Plans

Starting from $55 per month, Telstra offers four SIM Only plans, ideal for those who already have a mobile. Available without any contracts, Telstra Business plans offer 40GB on the smallest plan and 180GB on the largest plan. The plans are very similar to Telstra’s upfront plans . These plans are not available to enterprise customers. Here are all of the plans:

  • Small : 40GB for $55 per month (Does not include 5G access)
  • Medium : 80GB for $65 per month
  • Large : 120GB for $85 per month
  • Extra Large : 180GB for $115 per month

Telstra Business plans (except for the Small plan) also include three months of MYOB Essentials, perfect for any small or medium-sized business looking for accounting software. A subscription service applies after three months.

Should I get a Telstra Upfront plan or a Telstra Business plan?

You’ll find that Telstra’s Business plans are actually very similar to Telstra’s Upfront plans. One of the biggest differences is that you’ll need an ABN to sign up on a Telstra Business plan, although this isn’t necessary for a Telstra Upfront plan.

Beyond that, there’s no difference, apart from some perks like data-free music streaming on Telstra Upfront plans and three months of MYOB essentials on Telstra Business plans (excluding the small plan).

The following table shows selected published Telstra Upfront plans on Canstar Blue’s database, listed in order of cost, from the lowest to highest and then by data allowance, largest to smallest. Use our comparison tool to see plans from a range of other providers. This is a selection of products with links to a referral partner.

Mobiles on a Plan

Telstra offers a variety of 12 month and 24 month phone plans, allowing customers to find the best for their business. In addition to all of the services provided with the plan, you’ll be able to choose from the latest phones on offer, including the iPhone 12 , the Samsung Galaxy S21 and the OPPO Find X3 Pro .

Telstra Enterprise Phone Plans

For larger businesses, Telstra offers a wide range of plans and bundles to allow for an office expansion or simply an upgrade. The majority of Telstra Enterprise plans focus heavily on big teams and workplace productivity (including options to sign up for business-oriented software), aimed more towards the mobile workforce, so it’s best to contact your local Telstra provider for the best deals and prices for your business. You’ll need to do this anyway, as Telstra Enterprise services rely on a callback service to sign up.

How do Telstra Business plans compare to Optus and Vodafone?

It should come as no surprise that Optus and Vodafone both offer business ready phone plans. Compared to Optus and Vodafone, Telstra offers the most expensive plans, with plans starting at $55 per month for 40GB of data, while Optus business plans start at $45 for 20GB (offering very identical plans to its consumer plans). Vodafone on the other hand does things a bit differently, incentivising that you get a Vodafone Infinite plan (as in, one of its personal plans, which start at $40 for 10GB) and then add on a SIM Only Team Plan for every team member you have (which is $25 per month for unlimited data with 2Mbps speeds).

Each provider offers unlimited data, with Vodafone offering different unlimited speeds depending on your selected plan. Across all three providers, 5G access is included (except for Telstra’s Small plan). Inclusions are also different from provider to provider – Telstra is the only one of the three to offer the MYOB Essentials three month trial, Optus is the only one that offers Optus Sport, and Vodafone offers faster unlimited speeds (ranging from 2Mbps to 25Mbps, depending on the plan). Extras are added and removed by these providers from time to time, so it’s worth comparing them when you sign up for a plan.

If you’re interested in picking up a personal plan from Optus or Vodafone, you can find them in the table below.

Are Telstra Business plans worth it?

telstra 5g business plan

With phone use as individual as a business, it can be tough to decide which plan is the best fit for your circumstances. Some businesses rely heavily on data packages, while others rely solely on phone calls and messaging, while some rarely relying on their phones at all. As a result, it’s always recommended that you do your own research into what’s on offer and to think ahead about how you’ll be using your business phone in the future.

If you’re the sole operator, there isn’t much difference between a small business plan and a personal plan from Telstra, with the business plans priced very similarly. If you’re running a small or medium-sized business, it might be worth getting several Telstra Business plans on the same account and giving the SIM’s to your employees. If you’re running a large business, it might be worth getting in touch with Telstra directly through their Enterprise service.

Telstra has always been regarded as a leader of telecommunications in Australia, providing a wide range of services and products to suit the needs of both businesses and individuals. But despite the expertise, it’s still best to compare a range of different offers to find the best deal for your business.

telstra 5g business plan

Los Angeles, California - Oct 22, 2019

Telstra partners with cradlepoint to develop 5g for business customer edge solution.

Mobile World Congress Americas, LOS ANGELES – Oct. 22, 2019 –   Cradlepoint , the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G Ready wireless network edge solutions, today announced a partnership with Telstra to develop a “5G for Business” solution to be deployed at the customer edge and provide the performance, security and management that businesses demand.

Under the partnership, Telstra will tap into Cradlepoint’s deep enterprise cellular expertise and NetCloud platform to collaborate on the development of an integrated 5G modem and edge router solution that works seamlessly with its 5G mobile technology.

“5G internet broadband for business customers of all sizes represents a significant opportunity for Telstra,” commented Andrew Stormont, Telstra’s product & service design executive. “We know that the networking needs of our small-to-medium business and enterprise customers are very different from consumers’, which has played a key role in our decision to partner with Cradlepoint for a ‘5G for Business’ solution.”

Stormont continued, “Telstra’s aim is to deliver Australians with the best 5G available, and we are always testing, evaluating and implementing the latest emerging wireless ecosystem technologies. We’re proud to be leading the way in our deployment of this technology, for both consumers and enterprise.”

The needs of business customers differ significantly from consumers when it comes to manageability, security and reliability, requiring a different approach to customer edge solutions. Additionally, 5G must fit within their overall wide-area network (WAN) architectures, which include SD-WAN.

Cradlepoint is the market leader in 4G LTE and 5G Ready solutions for small-to-medium business, enterprise and public sector customers. Through its NetCloud service, Cradlepoint provides wireless edge solutions for fixed, mobile and IoT networks designed to work in lock-step with the most advanced LTE networks and provide a graceful “Pathway to 5G.” Cradlepoint NetCloud, which includes software-defined modem technology, is a comprehensive platform that enables customers to build and manage wireless WANs with complete lifecycle management, robust edge security and SD-WAN traffic management for optimal performance and reliability.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Telstra — Australia’s leading wireless operator — to create a new ‘5G for business’ offering that will modernize private WAN and internet access for business customers across the country,” explained Andrew Volard, executive director, Carrier Business Development, APAC, at Cradlepoint. “Telstra understands that business customers are ready to embrace 5G to enable disruptive new applications that can transform business and customer experiences, but they cannot afford to lose critical enterprise-class capabilities to get it.”

“ ‘5G for Business’ is developing into a massive market opportunity for wireless operators and providing a foundation to grow and expand other services, such as managed services, multi-access edge computing, vCPE, security, and differentiated services via network slicing, that elevates them beyond a fast dumb pipe,” stated Mike Sapien, chief analyst, Ovum. “Cradlepoint is already a leader in providing advanced mobile LTE and 5G Ready wireless edge solutions today and a first-mover in collaborating with carriers and ecosystem partners to develop the ‘5G for Business’ solutions and new business models needed to break this market open in 2020."

Why compare mobile plans with Finder?

We don't charge extra. Prices shown on Finder are the same as those you get directly from mobile plan providers.

We regularly work with providers to deliver amazing exclusive offers you won't find anywhere else.

We have a team dedicated to monitoring mobile plan prices and keeping deals updated daily.

Telstra offers the widest 5G network coverage in Australia, servicing 80% of the Australian population.

Having said that, it's always best to go with a network that offers the best coverage at your home or the areas you usually frequent. This could just as well be Optus or Vodafone.

  • Keep in mind: Not all Telstra MVNOs get access to the full Telstra 5G network. Instead of 80%, coverage for smaller Telstra providers is 75%. Smaller providers on the Optus or Vodafone network get the same coverage as a plan direct from Optus or Vodafone.

There are currently 16 providers offering 5G plans in Finder's database, and a further 12 providers offering mobile plans with a free 5G trial.

The 5G trial means you can take a provider's mobile plan with 5G for a spin, free of cost, until the trial period ends.

While some providers now offer 5G in Australia , just be aware that it may not be available across their full set of mobile plans. Some providers will offer specific 5G plans, while others tack it onto their regular 3G/4G plans.

Here's a list of providers in Australia that are currently offering dedicated 5G plans and those offering 5G trials:

The average monthly cost of a 5G mobile plan on Finder is $52 , and the average data allowance comes out to be close to 100GB per month.

How much does 5G cost compared to 4G?

It's not straightforward to compare 4G and 5G mobile plan costs from the same provider as data allowances can vary quite a bit.

The assumption is that because 5G mobile speeds are faster, you'll end up using more data to download, watch videos and play online games.

  • Example 1: Optus's 4G prepaid mobile plan costs $30 per 30 days for 30GB. Its 5G plan will set you back $60 every 30 days for 60GB of data. That's double the monthly cost for double the data.
  • Example 2: ALDImobile only offers 5G on its most expensive monthly plan which costs $55 for 60GB. However, you can get a 4G plan from $25 with 22GB monthly.

Generally speaking, 5G mobile plans are currently priced more expensive than 4G plans. But with the higher price tag, you'll likely get rewarded with more data too.

Angus Kidman

I needed to switch to the Telstra network because of reception dramas, but I didn't want to pay the Telstra price premium. ALDImobile had a much more affordable 5G option and I've had no dramas at all since switching.

The cheapest 5G mobile plan on Finder is from Goodtel with 5GB for $24 per month.

If you want to try out 5G speeds for even cheaper, you could sign up to Optus's Flex 2GB for $2 plan, but it only lasts for a day.

Theoretically, 5G speeds can be as fast as 1 gigabit per second, which is about 20 times faster than a standard 4G plan. However, it's much more likely you'll get speeds closer to 100–400Mbps.

5G speed can be affected by a number of factors such as your location, your mobile device and your provider.

Optus currently has the fastest 5G network in Australia with a speed of 240.5Mbps, according to the OpenSignal Mobile Network Experience Report from October 2022.

Telstra came in at a close second with 232.3Mbps, with Vodafone falling quite far behind at 122.1Mbps.

Interestingly, Telstra users had the most consistent experience in Australia, while Optus users continued to have the best 5G video experience and a good games experience.

This depends on your requirements, budget and whether 5G is available at your property and the places you usually visit. You will also need to ensure you have a 5G capable handset.

If you like to play online games, stream videos and download things on the go, then 5G speeds and lower latency could suit you well.

However, with the current price of 5G mobile plans being quite a bit more expensive than a regular 4G plan, it may be in your interest to wait till the technology is more widely available to specifically seek out a 5G plan.

Finder survey: What mobile plan features are most important to Australians of different ages?

In a survey of 1,110 Australians, 5G was the 3rd most popular feature that respondents were looking for in a mobile plan.

You can always sign up to a month-to-month 5G mobile plan and see how you go. If you don't see a noticeable difference then you always have the option to switch to another plan or provider.

Telstra to make wholesale 5G available to MVNOs in July

chrisduckett-mk3.png

Australia's incumbent telco, Telstra, announced on Tuesday it would have its wholesale 5G service up and running by July.

Currently, mobile virtual network operators such as Aldi, Woolworths, Boost, and Telstra-brand Belong only have access to LTE connectivity. With the addition of 5G covering 75% of the population, Telstra said it would give the virtual operators access to speeds up to 250Mbps, and make use of millimetre wave where available.

The telco added that as it expanded its 5G footprint, so too would wholesale coverage expand.

As Telstra's plans currently stand, the telco is offering 40GB for AU$55 per month, without any 5G connectivity, and customers need to pay AU$65 for 80GB with 5G access.

The company last year bumped up its small plan users onto 5G for an initial six months, however the drop back to solely LTE never happened.

At the same time, Telstra Wholesale said virtual operators would be able to extend into the IoT and wearables space, including the use of its Cat M1 network.

Last week, Nokia, Optus, and Samsung conducted a test where a pair of TDD spectrum bands was aggregated with a FDD band with the resulting 5G signal received by a commercial Samsung handset.

"Once available commercially, this 3 NR Carrier operation will enable customers to achieve a higher 5G download speed at more places improving their overall 5G experience. Our Samsung Galaxy S22 customers will soon be the first to benefit from this technology enhancement with other handsets to follow shortly after," Optus vice president of networks Lambo Kanagaratnam said.

Overnight, Qualcomm announced it had ditched sub-6GHz in a test to hit peak speeds of 8.3Gbps using only millimetre wave spectrum.
