Numerous studies since the early 1990s focus on social capital and the decline in civic participation. In this review article, we claim that most studies of civic participation focus on small and narrow definitions of civic participation.
We conducted a scoping review and content analysis of gerontological definitions of the concept of civic engagement and related concepts, such as volunteering and political participation.
In this review, Cnaan and Park document how key writings are limited in scope and are either nonprofit, political science or environmental studies oriented. They then review many definitions of civic participation and form one that best captures the concept.
This article tests the hypothesis that membership in faith-based civic associations leads to more secular forms of civic engagement in a Muslim-majority nation.
