10 Chrome Homework Extensions That Really Work for Students

Chrome helps you research your homework. But did you know about these extensions that help you plan and execute your school assignments as well?

If you mainly use Chrome to do research academic papers, projects, or assignments, why not use handy browser extensions to manage that homework for you?

These learning tools in your browser let you plan your tasks, help you research, and assist with your studies. And best of all, you don't have to worry about opening a separate application.

Lists for Assignments

Quick lists can help you stay on track. These cool tools let you add and mark off items as you go.

Synchro is a task tracker extension built for students. A clean, intuitive tool, it lets you add tasks, specify the deadlines, and choose the current status.

Synchro lists all the tasks under three columns- to-do, in progress, and completed. As you work on your tasks, you can drag and drop them into the relevant columns.

Once you're done, you can completely delete the task. Synchro also color codes the tasks, depending on the due dates, and sends task reminders. It integrates with Canvas LMS and automatically adds assignments from Canvas as tasks.

2. Tasks for Canvas

If you use Canvas LMS, then Tasks for Canvas is a must-have Chrome extension. The extension integrates with your Canvas account and adds a sidebar, showing all the tasks you need to do.

Since it is linked with the Canvas LMS, tasks will be automatically added and categorized according to the course. You can create custom tasks and mark them as complete. By default, it shows a weekly view, but you can adjust it to daily or monthly.

What's best about the\is extension is its beautiful layout. The extension adds colored rings for each course to show the progress.

3. Homework Tracker

Sometimes simple is sensational. Maybe you just have a basic list of assignments or projects that you want to track. Homework Tracker is ideal for this. Click the toolbar button to add or view your items and see a count of uncompleted tasks with the icon badge.

Enter your class, assignment, and due date (if you have one) and click Add . Then, as you complete your work, hit the Done button. You can sort by due date, so the closest items are right at the top. Homework Tracker is basic yet effective.

4. My Homework Reminder

My Homework Reminder is another good assignment list extension for Chrome. Click the toolbar button , add your assignment and due date, and hit Save .

You can sort by assignment or due date, mark the boxes for items you finish, and review your completed assignments easily. If you need to delete an item, just click the trash can and away it goes. Just like Homework Tracker, My Homework Reminder is simple but gets the job done.

Homework Helpers

Instead of random Googling, try these extensions to get the homework help you need quickly.

In case you don't know, Quizlet is a popular education website with learning tools and study guides. Thanks to the textbook solutions available on the site, you can easily find homework help. But this extension called Quizlit makes the process even easier.

The add-on lets you search Quizlet from any webpage, so you don't have to open the Quizlet site every time. Just click the Quizlit button , enter your question in the search bar, and press enter to see the relevant answers from Quizlet. Even better, you can select any question and choose Search for from the right-click context menu.

The extension shows multiple answers for each question and lets you copy the suggested answers with a single click. If you don't find the answers on Quizlet, you can try searching for them on the other tutoring sites for homework help .

2. AIR MATH

If you need homework help specifically for mathematics, AIR MATH is a great extension. Just use the extension to take a screenshot of the question, and the tool solves the problem along with a step-by-step solution.

Although it does offer free credits, you'll likely need to purchase extra credits or upgrade to a paid subscription. If you're not keen to pay for this extension, there are other online tools for solving math problems . AIR MATH is also available as a mobile app.

Buttons for Searches

When you need to do a fast search, a basic button can be the answer. These Chrome extensions let you search with a click.

1. Google Scholar Button

Google offers a ton of search tools and some are specific to patents, images, and of course, education. The Google Scholar Button lets you search for a topic easily. Click the button in your toolbar, pop in your search term, and then get your results.

You will receive a short number of results within the search window and can select a title to go right to the page. Or to view all results, click the full-screen button at the bottom of the pop-up window and a new tab will open for you. This is one of the must-have online tools if you're doing academic research .

Download: Google Scholar Button (Free)

2. Course Hero

Course Hero is similar to Google Scholar in that you click the button to search for a topic and then head to the site for the results. What's a bit different is that you need to create an account to obtain the resource. But, you can create one for free in just a few minutes.

Then, you will have access to documents and flashcards relating to your topic. Plus, you can get help from educators. You can also bookmark sources, keep track of your recently viewed items, and download the mobile app to study on-the-go.

Helpers for Focus

Don't get distracted by social media when you are doing homework. Use one of these awesome tools to help you focus and finish.

1. ReCall Study Time

Set up your study session, mark the pages you want to monitor, and get to work with ReCall Study Time. You can choose from two hours for those quick homework sessions or 24 hours for the all-nighters. Then, select the social media sites to block like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

If you feel yourself weaken and head to one of the monitored sights, you will instead be greeted with a nasty-gram like the one above. If you have trouble staying away from social media to get your homework done, check out ReCall Study Time.

Download: ReCall Study Time (Free)

2. Focus Mode

Focus Mode is another site-blocking tool to use while you are doing your homework. The extension monitors four sites by default, including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. You can choose which to unblock and add a custom blocked site if there is an additional temptation not on that list.

When you start your study or research session, just hit the extension button in the toolbar and turn on the toggle button . Then, when you try to access one of the monitored pages, you will view a blurred screen with a message that focus mode is on.

When you finish, turn off the toggle button and check out your distraction attempts if you're curious. You can also take a five-minute break when you're tempted to check your feed.

10 Student-Tested Chrome Extensions

Many teachers and students use the popular browser, and it’s easy to customize with these extensions that really benefit students.

Teachers are always on the lookout for new ideas about teaching practices, classroom design and organization, and how best to reach students. They also need to keep up with the technology tools they provide to students. One tool that’s often taken for granted is the browser students use to access the internet, but there’s a lot that teachers can do to make a browser more effective. For the many schools using Google Chrome, extensions are an easy way to adapt students’ browsers and equip them with personalized support they can use on assignments and classroom activities throughout the year.

When downloading a Chrome extension, it’s important to ensure that the tool is appropriate for students, including evaluating its data and privacy regulations, age restrictions, and overall connection to learning goals. Since it’s easy for anyone to get their self-created extension into the Chrome Web Store, one important consideration is whether or not the extension has an Established Publisher badge, which indicates that the extension publisher is verified and meets Google’s developer program policies. Be sure to also check out the Privacy Practices section of each extension before downloading.

The following are the top 10 extensions that I recommend and use, and that support student learning in the classroom. These extensions do not require students to create an account before using. Each tool can be used immediately after downloading—and they’re all free.

1. Google Dictionary : This extension is a reliable choice for students. It was created and is managed by Google. When it’s enabled, students can double-click a word within the browser and see the definition in a pop-up bubble. They can also listen to the pronunciation of the word. Within the bubble, there’s also a “More” option, which opens a new page with a Google search for the word that will often include additional definitions, sentences, or relevant webpages. An option exists to translate words into a variety of language options, as well.

This extension has been around for years and is still very useful to students today.

2. Dark Reader : Dark Mode is considered an accessibility feature that removes some of the light from screens while still ensuring that the color contrast ratio makes content visible and readable. Dark Reader is one of the most popular of the many extensions that accomplish this task on all browser pages.

Dark Reader allows users to darken their screen and customize the brightness, contrast, gray scale, and sepia tones. Users can further customize by specifying adjustments for individual websites. For students, especially in the secondary years when screen time is more prevalent, this extension can be a great option for some students who prefer the comfort of a darker view when reading digitally, especially in low-light environments.

3. Mindful Break : This extension offers the digital version of a brain break. Mindful Break was developed by Google and provides students an opportunity to engage in mindfulness. The extension will create a pop-up in the browser while students are working. These pop-ups include breathing exercises or a mindful support strategy.

Students can customize how frequently these break pop-ups appear and set a schedule for the extension to run on certain days of the week and between specific times. They can also adjust how they receive reminders.

4. Postlight Reader : The name of this extension has changed—it used to be called Mercury Reader—but the general functionality has remained consistent.

When activated on a webpage, Postlight Reader immediately eliminates ads and distractions and places the text into a format that mirrors an e-reader. Students can customize the text size and font and whether the text appears in light or dark mode for viewing comfort. For students doing research online, this extension is helpful by providing an opportunity to focus on the text in front of them and not the distracting ads that fill so many webpages.

5. Auto Highlight : This extension helps draw students’ attention to key ideas and details of an online text. When activated, Auto Highlight will scan an article and highlight specific information that students need to focus on while reading. The extension can be clicked up to three times within the same article, and the more it is clicked, the more details it will highlight.

Students can customize the highlight color, text color, and link color based on personal preference. They can also opt to have the highlights start automatically when a page loads instead of having to manually start them each time they visit a new page.

6. Visor : Visor is an excellent option for students looking for support in tracking text as they read. When activated, it emphasizes one line or several lines of text at a time, while darkening the rest of the screen. The student can use the cursor to move the area of focus as they read. For students who may need additional support with focusing or who lose their place frequently when reading in a digital space, this extension could be useful.

7. Page Marker : This extension offers students the opportunity to annotate and write on top of an article or PDF. Once it’s activated, students can use their mouse to create drawings, highlight information, add text, and embed shapes or lines. The color and size of the annotations are customizable. When finished, students can export their work. The extension will automatically take a screenshot, saving it to the Downloads folder of their device. For students looking to mark up a reading passage, highlight important information or key words in a word problem, or digitally show their work in math, Page Marker is an easy-to-use option.

8. OpenDyslexic for Chrome : This extension converts all text on a webpage to the OpenDyslexic font. There is some debate about whether there’s any evidence of the effectiveness of this font, but many people have said that using it has positively impacted their digital reading experience. Students can set the extension to automatically run when a new page is opened or manually enable it when needed.

9. Google Translate : This extension is a staple for English language learners. Once it’s downloaded, students can immediately begin translating full webpages or individual words within a page. When a word is double-clicked, the student will see the translation and part of speech and can hear it in both English and their chosen language. Students can also activate the extension to translate an entire page for them.

Google Translate was created and is managed by Google, and if a student highlights and right-clicks a word, it immediately takes them to the Google Translate website, where they can translate the word into multiple languages and find out more information about it.

10. YiNote : This extension, which is simple in design and navigation, allows students to generate notes on YouTube videos. Once activated, a side panel appears with a space for notes. When the student reaches a moment in the video where they would like to note something of importance, they type their note and save it within YiNote. This process continues as the video progresses.

After the video is complete, the student can view all their notes, including returning to the time stamp of their note to review the video. They can edit their comments, annotate on top of video screenshots, and export their work. This extension makes it simpler for students to track their learning than if they used a split screen and took notes in an external document.

In addition to the concerns mentioned above—privacy, data collected, and age restrictions—it’s important to remember that students should only download necessary extensions. Adding too many extensions or setting all extensions to automatically run on new webpages can cause the browser to slow down. To help limit the number of extensions that students download, you can present the options above to them based on needs you observe in your classroom or on their requests.

Manually transcribing audio or video files is an incredibly tedious process. You need to listen, re-listen, and simultaneously type each word spoken carefully. Studies show it takes at least 4 hours to transcribe a one-hour audio.

Why use transcript extensions?

Transcript extensions are a game-changer for anyone dealing with audio or video content for the following reasons:

Saves time and energy

Increases efficiency

Cost-effective

Streamlines collaboration

Manual transcription is time-consuming, requiring hours to transcribe just a short audio. Transcript extensions automate this process, saving you valuable time and allowing you to focus on more critical tasks.

Plus, transcript extensions are often user-friendly and seamlessly integrate into existing platforms. You don't need to be a tech expert to use them effectively.

With automated transcription, you eliminate the need for constant rewinding and replaying. It boosts efficiency as you can quickly obtain accurate transcriptions without the tedious manual effort.

Typically, transcription service providers charge $1.30 to $3.50 per minute. It can be costly if you are on a tight budget.

Transcript extensions, on the other hand, are affordable and offer higher efficiency without a hefty price tag.

Transcription tools facilitate collaboration by providing a written record of spoken content. This is particularly useful for team discussions, interviews, or meetings, allowing everyone to follow along and refer to the conversation anytime they want.

How to choose the best transcript extension?

Look for the following factors while choosing a transcript extension:

Privacy and security

The most important factor to consider when choosing a transcript extension is its accuracy. Do trials with sample files to test transcription error rates. The best extensions utilize neural networks for continuous improvements.

Is your transcript extension safe?

Security is non-negotiable for transcript extensions, especially when dealing with sensitive information and confidential conversations. So, before selecting an extension, investigate its encryption, permissions, and privacy policies to ensure the safety and security of the tool.

Lastly, evaluate the extension's pricing structure. Some extensions operate on a subscription basis, while others may charge per transcription minute. Compare it with your budget and needs before making a purchase.

Wrapping up,

Transcription is no longer a tedious and time-consuming process. Transcript extensions like Fireflies and CakeAI allow you to easily generate accurate meeting transcripts, video captions, and more in just minutes.

Embrace these AI-powered assistants to maximize efficiency and unlock new levels of productivity. Happy transcribing!

Personally identifiable information, Personal communications, and Website Content - Meet Transcript records your Google Meet captions, chat messages, and screenshots on your computer and sends them directly to your Google Drive account. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Question: When I enable "Show screenshot button" in the Meet Transcript settings page, I get a popup requesting permission to "read and change all your data on the websites you visit." Why does it need access to all sites? Answer: The screenshot feature uses the captureVisibleTab API to take screenshots when requested by the user. The API stipulates that either the "All URLs" or the "ActiveTab" permission is needed. However, the screenshot feature requires the "All URLs" permission because a custom button is created within the Google Meet UI for users to click.
