Sam Bahadur is about the life of Sam Manekshaw who was the Chief of the Army Staff during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. From his young notorious days, love life to his journey to become a field marshal, Sam Bahadur highlights all the key points of his life. Over the years, he worked closely with the Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi during the 1971 war. After the war comes to an end, he is then promoted to become the Field Marshal, the first Indian officer to obtain that honour.

What’s good about Sam Bahadur

Vicky Kaushal supremacy: It was just Vicky, Vicky and Vicky Kaushal! He is the best thing that can happen to the movie. Vicky has done a fantastic job and he demands attention in every scene. Vicky carries the film like a true hero and you just can’t stop going gaga over his performance.

Storyline: Meghna Gulzar picked an untold story of an Indian Army Officer who becomes the first Field Marshal. Since it is not a known story, Meghna poetically tells her story. The first half of the movie is slow as it builds up the plot; however, the second half picks the pace. It is more engaging and intriguing as we get to know more about Sam Manekshaw and his strategies.

What didn’t work with Sam Bahadur

Screenplay: Given that the story is quite intriguing as we are being shown the untold story of the first field Marshal, the screenplay seems a little incomplete. A lot has been shown about Sam in the movie and yet it feels something is incomplete. It is not a full war movie but it is about a person who is a strategist. He fights the battle cleverly but not in the battleground. It seems like Sam Bahadur is for niche audience.

Star performances

Vicky Kaushal plays the titular role in Sam Bahadur and this man has made me speechless. What a performer! He is truly a rockstar and the finest actor in Bollywood. Vicky understands his character way too much and ensures to get into the character’s skin. From his accent to his body language, Vicky never got out of his character. Throughout the movie I didn’t see Vicky playing the role, I saw Sam Manekshaw onscreen. It looks like Vicky will bag the next Best Actor National Award for all the right reasons. Hands down, Vicky Kaushal is just fabulous in Sam Bahadur and I loved him before but this time, I became a fan of his craft.

Sanya Malhotra plays the role of Silloo Manekshaw, Sam’s wife. She looks cute and does a great job in playing her character. Though she is seen for a limited screen time, Sanya still shines in her space. On the other hand, Fatima Sana Shaikh essays the role of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi in the movie. She is a good actor; however, I couldn’t buy her as the PM. Must say, she tries really hard to act and to talk like the PM but sadly, it doesn’t come across that convincingly. Applause to her for the efforts but sadly, she didn’t look so convincing as Indira Gandhi.

Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub plays the role of Yahya Khan, a Pakistani military officer in the movie. Zeeshan is not seen in some scenes and he does a great job with his character. Even with the prosthetics, Zeeshan tries to do justice to his role and must say, he did well.

Concluding Sam Bahadur review, Vicky Kaushal is the ultimate star who will astonish you with his impeccable performance. If not anything, one should definitely watch the movie for Vicky. It is a typical Meghna Gulzar movie with the right amount of intensity and a riveting story. Sam Bahadur is a must-watch movie if historical or war movies entice you.

New Delhi: 'Sam Bahadur' is Vicky Kaushal's film. It is his performance as the titular character Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw that will move you to tears, make you smile and admire the grit, the brand of army discipline and pure patriotism that he portrays. For many generations who may not have heard of Sam Manekshaw, Meghna Gulzar's film will feel like a history lesson, amply filled with historical footage that spans over five decades of Indian history.

Sam Bahadur Movie Review

'Sam Bahadur' has a documentary-feature quality to it. The film is densely loaded with socio-political history, complex geo-political relations between countries, and political parties. And yet, Meghna Gulzar never indulges in any of these elements or makes a statement about it. 

The filmmaker sticks to her subject, Sam Manekshaw and chronicles some four decades of his life with a sense of awe while treating her subject.

Vicky Kaushal in and as Sam Manekshaw, India's first Field Marshal, delivers a performance, he will be remembered for many many years. 

The actor's attention to detail when it comes to the gait, manner of speech, posture and other mannerisms attributed to Sam Manekshaw will make audiences forget that they are watching Vicky Kaushal on screen: a compliment that every actor ideally aspires for.

Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh play their parts to the T despite having sketchy presences and fully-etched out roles. However, since a major portion of 'Sam Bahadur' revolves around Vicky Kaushal, the actor has the most screen space and a screen presence hard to take your eyes off.

Meghna Gulzar's attention to detail

In 'Sam Bahadur' and in other Meghna Gulzar's films, a lot of attention is given to detail. In the Vicky Kaushal film, the medals, badges, parts of army life and discipline are given their due attention amid the larger-than-life narrative of Sam Manekshaw' life.

Lyrics and songs all act as narrative devices and only have something more to say about Sam Manekshaw or the history that is being portrayed on screen.

Archival footage from Jawaharlal Nehru's 'A Tryst With Destiny' speech, his death, WWII footage from Burma, Sino-Indian War 1962, Indo Pakistani War of 1971 are all sprinkled throughout 'Sam Bahadur'. And, this is cleverly done in a way that the filmmaker does not need to show live action or recreate the infantry and combat battles from these wars.

Some combat is shown in the beginning of the film during the Japanese invasion of Myanmar during WWII. However, that is only done to intensify the emotion and puncture in narrative as Sam Manekshaw is shot.

Sam Bahadur Music

'Sam Bahadur' has a background score that matches the tempo and tonality of the film. The fist-thudding, foot-marching brand of patriotism is complemented by archival radio announcements and news broadcasts about the wars that shaped Indian history ( post partition), and a couple of songs that tend to unify and show the multi-faceted and diverse face of the Indian Army.

Sam Bahadur Edit

The biggest problem that most biopics tend to grapple with is the edit. With 'Sam Bahadur', the challenge looks bigger as the film shows some four decades of the colourful and glorious life of Sam Mankeshaw.  However, the editing by Nitin Baid and the temporal movement of time and space without indulging in any specific moment from the life of Sam Manekshaw is great.

An observer and admirer's distance is always maintained as the organic and chronological unfolding of the life of Sam Mankeshaw takes place on screen.

To be able to bring down the screen time of a glorious life and momentous moments that created an impact on the larger Indian landscape per se, by one man's contribution, to a two hour thirty minutes run time is a highlight and deserves due attention for what it's worth ( war dramas, especially biographical ones barely have that length).

Sam Bahadur brand of patriotism

Unlike many patriotic films that glorify violence, jingoism and a brand of nationalism that reeks of overstated masculinity, 'Sam Bahadur' comes as a breather.

The film does have the masculine patriotic fervour but that is more inclined towards the valour and respect towards the uniform of the Indian Army and the foundation it was built upon. There is an understated sense of men-only Army and the valour and discipline they bring along but then again, 'Sam Bahadur' chronicles a time when this was how things were done. 

However, this understated brand of patriotism perfectly scored with music and details is brought forward by the lens of a filmmaker, who happens to be a woman. A kind of sensitivity, perhaps a male director could not have brought to a topic like this( recent exceptions include Vishnuvardhan's acclaimed 'Shershaah').

Sam Bahadur screenplay and dialogue

'Sam Bahadur' is a well-rounded film with the perfect amount of show and tell. It also feels like the-just-the-right homage to a figure of Sam Manekshaw. This is done with an interesting use of camera angles, music, background score, performances and dialogue--all a great blend of balance and sensitivity.

As for the dialogue of 'Sam Bahadur', the film's dialogue looks well-placed and compliments the tonality of genre and time without overdoing it.

A small moment in the film, totally unmissable among greater highlights, stood out for the reviewer. 

It happened Sam Manekshaw guides his soldiers to not touch any woman and be gentlemen before soldiers ( during war) felt like such a small puncture in the grander narrative of incidents reported against the Indian Army for many years now. A small moment that a filmmaker like Meghna Gulzar could have brought to highlight and the loaded context with it.

'Sam Bahadur' may not be Meghna Gulzar's best work. Among her other works like 'Raazi', that also play around with patriotism, 'Sam Bahadur' has a lot of unanswered silences in a narrative and loopholes that are left unplugged. Supporting characters appear and vanish at the whim and need of the larger Manekshaw character.

Several topics and sub plots are touched upon without going into detail and then again, the film feels like a sanitized presentation of a larger-than-life character of a man. 

Perhaps, the too-much-awe factor for Sam Manekshaw becomes a hindrance in creating a sense of drama, tension in the screenplay of 'Sam Bahadur, which in comparison to Meghna Gulzar's other works, feels bland.

Despite having that distance and a need to maintain a docu-feature quality, what is sometimes forgotten is that the film is a feature afterall...

To conclude, 'Sam Bahadur' is an engaging watch about a man who deserved such a homage. The film is a mature take on how the biographical war drama genre on patriotism can be done right. 

Watch it for the performance of Vicky Kaushal and for Meghna Gulzar who has set the bar high for other filmmakers attempting the genre or this subject.

Vicky Kaushal ‘s Sam Bahadur might have had a slow start, but the biographical war drama has finally hit the USD 12 million mark globally.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar , Sam Bahadur released on December 1, 2023, alongside Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal. The film stars Vicky Kaushal, Sana Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh , Neeraj Kabi, Edward Sonnenblick, and Zeeshan Ayyub. Ronnie Screwvala produces the film under the banner of RSVP Movies.

Its premise is set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. The biopic sheds light on Sam Manekshaw’s life and career, which spanned over four decades and five wars. It also highlights his role in the war that led to the creation of Bangladesh.

Sam Bahadur’s collects $12 million worldwide

As per recent reports , Sam Bahadur has collected over USD 12 million worldwide. On day 17, the Vicky Kaushal-starrer saw a significant jump and collected USD 653 thousand. Over its second weekend, the film collected around USD 860 thousand with over 42.69% occupancy on Sunday, December 17, 2023.

It crossed the USD 11 million mark in two weeks due to positive reviews, strong performances, and its impact on viewers. As per the latest figures, Sam Bahadur has earned USD 9 million in India within 17 days.

Actor Vicky Kaushal took to social media to express his gratitude on the film’s worldwide collection. He captioned the post with, “Sam Bahadur marches on with pride & victory at the box office, and we are grateful! #Samबहादुर in cinemas now! Book your tickets! Link in bio. #SamIsHere #SamBahadur”

Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal will be the next guests on Kapil Sharma’s Netflix show The Great Indian Kapil Show. On Wednesday, the OTT platform shared a short clip of the upcoming episode. The promo shows a glimpse of what looks like a hilarious episode. In the promo, Sunil Grover’s saree-wearing cross dressing character tries to flirt with Vicky by calling him her husband but he brings it to a halt as he responds with, “My wife’s name also starts with K. So by that logic, you and I are siblings.”

Kapil also takes a shot at Sunny’s rumoured relationship with actor Sharvari and before Sunny can come up with a response, Vicky says, “He isn’t waiting for your response. The punchline has already been delivered.” Sunny gets back at Vicky as he opens up about his older brother’s singing. “He doesn’t know how to sing but he sings with a lot of passion,” he says as Kapil deciphers that this could be counted as a compliment and an insult.

The brothers also seem to be sharing a few anecdotes from their childhood as Vicky Kaushal recalls that sometimes when they went for a walk with father Sham Kaushal, Sunny would be “found in a gutter (manhole)”. He also recalled that like many regular middle-class households, their parents would insist on them putting up a dance show when guests would come over to their house.

The Great Indian Kapil Show streams weekly on Netflix and so far, the show has aired three episodes. The season started with Ranbir Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor and Riddhima Kapoor, followed by an episode featuring cricketers Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer . The latest episode featured the team of Amar Singh Chamkila as actors Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra and director Imtiaz Ali joined the show.

Kapil Sharma had a weekly comedy show on Sony TV and the actor-comedian has started the new show using a similar format. His longtime collaborator Sunil Grover is back on the show. Kapil and Sunil had a feud almost six years which led them to parting ways.

The film stars Vicky Kaushal in the leading role along with Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra in prominent roles. Vicky Kaushal plays the charismatic war hero Sam Manekshaw, showcasing the intricacies and bravery associated with the character. On the other hand, Fatima Sana Shaikh flawlessly transforms into the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film while Sanya Malhotra steps into the shoes of Silloo, Sam’s wife.

Sam Bahadur is a war drama based on the biography of India’s first Field Marshal, Sam Manekshaw. The movie explores the life of this esteemed military leader in great detail. The script for the film was co-written by Meghna Gulzar, Bhavani Iyer, and Shantanu Srivastava, while Ronnie Screwvala produced it under the RSVP Movies banner.

As for its digital release, Sam Bahadur will release on ZEE5. The streaming platform is yet to announce the release date of the same.

Bollywood actors and brothers, Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal are set to appear on actor-comedian Kapil Sharma's Netflix show, 'The Great Indian Kapil Show'. A promo of the upcoming episode was shared by the streamer on social media. It featured Vicky and Sunny pulling each other's legs and sharing anecdotes from their childhood.

In the promo, Vicky joked that when they went out with their father, Sham Kaushal , they would often lose Sunny, who would fall into the gutter. The 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke' actor also shared that when they were kids, they were scared of a particular guest coming to their home. They knew if they came, he and Sunny would have to dance in front of them.

Kapil also hinted at Sunny's rumoured relationship with actor Sharvari Wagh, saying, "Valentine's Day should be on 14th 'Sharvari', oh sorry, 14th February." The episode featuring Sunny and Vicky Kaushal will stream on Netflix on Saturday, April 20. Last week, Kapil hosted the team of the Netflix film 'Amar Singh Chamkila', including Diljit Dosanjh, Imtiaz Ali, and Parineeti Chopra.
