Health and social care personal statement example.

Due to previous experiences of working with a range of people in the care sector I believe that throughout my time on various work placements with people who have disabilities and difficulties in communicating, along with the experiences gained throughout my studies, my wish to pursue a career in the care profession has grown.

To further my interest in working with and around people I completed a course in childcare. Throughout this course I was able to gain valuable experience of working with special needs children. While this was very challenging I also found it an extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience.

To further my knowledge and passion for working with people I took a health and social care advanced course and took a weeks experience in a day centre that involves working with people who suffer from difficulties in communicating and having disabilities.

This again helped to broaden my understanding of working with people and also how to deal with children and adults with disabilities. Within my spare time I have researched the job role and requirements for health promotion to find out what is involved.

To build upon these interests further, I am taking up a one week work experience within the health field. I will be spending the first week in a care home focusing on helping elderly people that suffer from dementia and my second week assisting a health promoter to experience a more professional job role in health care. I am looking forward to this valuable experience as it will further consolidate my desire to study health and social care.

I currently work as a sales assistant which has given me a valuable experience of working with people and how to assist their needs in any way possible. During this time I am developing effective communication skills and good working relationships.

In addition to this it is also helping me to show how committed I am to my responsibilities as well as demonstrating good organisation skills. Having to juggle work and school as well as social activities this also shows that I am developing my time keeping skills to make myself more committed and more punctual.

During my first year of sixth form I helped to raise money for the McMillan Cancer trust charity. I also found this very rewarding as I was helping others that were in need, just like during my work placements. I often play sports after sixth form with my friends; this has helped me to develop extra skills in working well in a team.

In addition I have completed voluntary work with a year six class to increase my knowledge of working with young people, another activity that I very much enjoyed and found extremely rewarding. To further my interest in working with people I have recently volunteered to do a level 3 v-volunteering in my spare time, the certificate itself is an accreditation form Newcastle University.

During my spare time I mainly like to dance and sing. I find this is a good way to express myself in addition to help me keep fit. I also attend the gym often to also help keep me fit I also like to attend various different events and take advantage of any activities that I am offered whether it is through school or outside of school.

This helps to increase my confidence and also helps me to meet new people. I feel that university is definitely the right path for me. I am always working extremely hard to achieve the best I can, a feat which I intend to carry on throughout my university years.

I feel I have the necessary skills needed to enjoy university to the full and also be successful in future years. In addition I would also like to go to university to help develop my skills even further so I can gain a good job in the health and social care sector which is always my main interest.

No experience: If you have very little or no previous experience, it can be daunting to write a personal statement and you may be wondering where to start. When starting a career as a care assistant, you will likely find you already have many of the soft skills needed, and everything else can be learnt along the way. Soft skills are general character traits that describe how you work and interact with others, and are typically built through day-to-day experiences.

An example of soft skills are:

  • Communication - good communication skills means you are able to effectively share your own perspectives, whilst also being able to listen and understand others. This is essential when communicating with others such as service users, their loved ones, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Team work - being able to work as a team is extremely important when working as a care assistant.
  • Problem solving - unexpected problems can arise that you may need to resolve. Being able to identify a problem, think critically and determine the best resolution is an important skill, no matter how big or small the problem may be.
  • Time management - when working as a care assistant, you will have time slots dedicated to each client. Good time management skills are important, to ensure that you arrive at each client on time, and complete the tasks required within the time allotted.
  • Adaptability - for a care assistant, no two days are the same. Being able to adapt your approach depending on your client and their needs is an extremely important skill.

We’ve all been there; sat thinking, ‘I could do that job better than you’.

So how do you actually get a Care Home Manager job?

Do I need experience?

The simple answer is ‘yes’. The difficulty is what type of experience?

A care home manager needs to be experienced in a range of different skills and abilities:

• Staff management,

• Working with residents/patients and their families,

• Financial management,

• Liaising with different professionals and organisations,

• Working with regulatory and inspection bodies.

The list can seem endless, and everyone has a checklist of experience where there are things they can tick off, and things that they can’t.

However, if you have some of the experience, don’t let the deficits put you off. You don’t necessarily have to have worked in a care home setting before.

I’ve known people from a range of other care settings move over into residential or nursing care (and visa versa), and make a success of it; people from day centres, domiciliary care and live-in care.

In fact, depending upon what the employer is looking for, not having worked in that area of care can be asset, because you are going to have new ideas and thoughts, and not be borne down with ‘old’ or out dated ways of doing things.

Remember, if they challenge you about a lack of experience in residential or nursing care, having a new pair of eyes and fresh ideas can be a perfect response.

Experience comes in many different forms, and real life practice working with people from different backgrounds and different illnesses is a bonus.

Working with people with dementia, to those with chronic and long term conditions, those needing peg feeding and end of life care, gives you a rich experience in care, encompassing working with others, planning care, dealing with difficult residents, and learning new skills etc. It might also have required training.

As a tip, keep a portfolio of your work. Training certificates, supervision and any letters thanking you for the care you have given.

These make great reading at an interview , and nothing says you are great carer/ manager/ leader than a letter from family members telling your interviewer this! Next, ask yourself if you’ve had a leadership role in your current or previous jobs?

You probably have, but might not think of it as such. Here are some ideas about what leadership roles might look like:

• Co-ordinating – from activities to rotas, being responsible for co-ordinating things is a leadership role,

• Reviewing – care plans, risk assessments etc involve stepping up and leading staff,

• Liaising with others – including family, other professionals such as social workers, nurses and GPs, writing letters, and attending meetings are all expected of a manager. If you have some experience here, then you’re on your way to a manager post too,

• Staff management - if you lead a team, supervise, shadow new staff, appraise, train or otherwise support people in your team, these are roles that are expected of a manager. If you have training in them and certificates to support this, this is good evidence to build on,

• Financial management – from managing cash for your organisation, to dealing with service user monies, this type of accountability is also good experience.

Typical experience such as the examples given above, come through different roles that you might occupy in an organisation.

The more senior you are, the chances are that you will be trusted to do more of this work. So if you thinking of applying for a managerial role, be prepared to think out what you have done, or do, and can demonstrate, with examples, in an application form or at an interview.

Navigating the Heartache of Moving a Loved One to a Care Home: A Personal Journey

Life has a way of presenting us with decisions that test our strength and resolve. Recently, I faced one of the hardest choices I’ve ever had to make: moving my 90-year-old mum into a care home. This was not a decision made lightly, nor one that has come without a significant emotional toll.

My Dad’s Passing Was a Turning Point

Mum will turn 90 this November, but her journey over the past few years has been anything but easy. She lost her husband, my dad, four years ago during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. They had been married for over 60 years, a bond that was nearly inseparable. Dad’s passing was a devastating blow.

He had fallen and was transferred to a care home for what was supposed to be rehabilitation, but the situation quickly deteriorated. With visiting restrictions in place, Dad became confused and disoriented. His only wish was to be at home with Mum, but tragically, he caught COVID while in the care home and passed away within weeks.

We were given just 20 minutes to say our final goodbyes before being forced to leave due to the restrictions. Mum wasn’t even allowed to touch him. It was a harrowing experience, one that I know was shared by many families around the world during that dark time.

Mom’s Primary Carer

Since Dad’s passing, I have taken on the role of Mum’s primary carer, a responsibility that has brought both challenges and rewards. I visit her daily, handle her shopping, washing, and cleaning, all while juggling the demands of running my own business and looking after my grandchildren.

My siblings, who live in different parts of the country, have helped when they can, allowing me some much-needed respite. But the weight of responsibility has been heavy, and as Mum’s health has declined, the demands have only increased.

A few years ago, Mum suffered a small stroke. Although she recovered enough to return home with care in place, her short-term memory has been steadily declining ever since.

We Needed Special Care

About six months ago, I began exploring the idea of respite care for her. Finding the right care home was a daunting task. While many looked clean and well-maintained, they lacked the homely atmosphere I was searching for. I wanted a place where Mum would feel valued, where she could be part of a community and engage in stimulating activities.

After several visits, I finally found a home that felt right. It had good reviews, the right atmosphere, and a warm, caring staff. The first time Mum stayed there, she was reluctant, but after settling in, she began to enjoy her time there. The second time was easier, and she even expressed a wish to stay long-term, though she quickly changed her mind once she returned home.

However, the last time was different. She had made friends, and the staff, who clearly adore her, welcomed her back with open arms. When she returned home, she was adamant that moving to the care home permanently was the best decision for her.

The Transition Was Difficult

We were fortunate that the care home had a lovely room available. After visiting it together and speaking with the staff again, we agreed to the move. But the transition has been anything but smooth. Leaving the house she has lived in for 35 years has been incredibly difficult for Mum. She often forgets that it was her choice to move, and she needs constant reassurance.

For me, the journey has been equally challenging. At nearly 65, the prospect of knowing Mum is safe and well cared for should bring relief, but the guilt is overwhelming at times. As a family, we’ve faced our share of disagreements, and not all of my siblings are on board with the decision. The result has been many sleepless nights, filled with doubt and heartache.

Yet, despite the challenges, I know in my heart that this is the right choice for Mum. At home, she was isolated, with most of her friends either gone or unwell themselves. She spent long hours watching television, unmotivated to move around, which only worsened her mobility. In the care home, she has a community, activities to engage in, and a staff that genuinely cares for her well-being.

It’s Not an Easy Decision

The decision to move a loved one into a care home is never easy, and the journey is filled with emotional ups and downs. But sometimes, the hardest decisions are the ones that bring the most peace. For me, knowing that Mum is surrounded by people who care for her and that she is no longer isolated is worth every sleepless night.

To those of you who may be facing a similar decision, know that you are not alone. The guilt, the worry, the sleepless nights – they are all part of the process. But in the end, the most important thing is the well-being of your loved one. And sometimes, that means making the hardest choice of all.

My husband fell at home in 2022 and he was hospitalized and transferred to a rehabilitation center. He is still there and isn’t happy about it. He will be 80 in October and it has been living in a nursing home for over two years. I am the only person who visits him. But I have been going through challenges of my own with knee pain and loss of mobility. I’m 67 and I feel guilty that I can’t see him as much as before. We have been married for 35 years. We miss each other very much.

Hi Linda, I work as a diversional therapy coordinator in an aged care home in Australia and I see the emotional difficulties partners and families go through on admitting a loved one to residential care. I am a big advocate for providing support for them as well as the new resident. Validation for how they are feeling is on the top of the list. Where there is dementia involved, directing them to dementia support organisations can really assist in accepting the situation and relieving the guilt that they commonly feel.

I understand what you’re going through, as my family has been going through something similar in these past few months. My mom has advanced Alzheimer’s with mobility issues, and our 86-year-old father has been caring for her. A year ago, I found a home environment with only four women and an amazing, caring staff. Dad wasn’t ready, but this past summer it became too much and when she’d fall, he couldn’t lift her anymore. It was an emotional time, with siblings disagreeing with dad’s ultimate decision to place her in this fine home. It’s been almost three months and mom is content, well cared for, and surrounded by a few “a friends.” The siblings have adjusted, but it’s dad that’s having a hard time. He’s been the full-time caregiver, so the adjustment is difficult. He knows he made the right decision and sees her several times a week, but sad. I’m hopeful he will find his mojo again, as he’s lucid with many hobbies. With several friends having gone through this, we are certainly not alone.
