There is a high probability of a low-probability event coming through and spoiling your party. This happens the moment you think, “Now, we are all prepared. I can afford some rest.” This has been the theme of global human life over the past three-four years.

The Covid-19 pandemic, followed by the Russia-Ukraine war and the furor over climate change, has meant that businesses increasingly find the external environment to be a bit of a minefield.

For you and me, this translates into worries over career and job security. The headlines only serve to accentuate this uncertainty. Even technology giants like Apple, Meta, Twitter, and Amazon are not in a sweet spot. Sample these recent banner headlines:

  • Meta to cut more than 11,000 jobs in one of the biggest US layoffs this year
  • Twitter lays off 50% of its global workforce
  • Silicon Valley sees around 45,000 layoffs as of October 2022

The US is likely to hit a recession, and central banks across the globe are stocking up on economic worries. For people like us, again, the question remains, how do you insulate your career against an uncertain future? How do you move on and ensure your career priorities shape up exactly as you wanted?

The key is to focus on what you can control and turn your anxiety into action. The best way to do this is to design a workable career roadmap to mitigate the sufferings of losing a job.

Having a practical career roadmap in hand will lend you the strength to stay stable in these volatile times. Better still, if you are ready to take advantage of uncertain times to sharpen your long-term career plans, we have the ultimate resource to assist you, Career Roadmap Templates

FAQs on Career Roadmap

How to make a career roadmap.

Start with a simple framework and branch out if needed. Keep your timeline and other responsibilities in mind as you create your career roadmap.

  • Define your starting point.
  • Define your career goal and its requirements
  • Add steps to connect your roadmap’s beginning with ending
  • Make your career roadmap engaging and easy to access
  • Keep your career roadmap updated.

Why should organizations create career paths?

Designing career paths help companies in:

  • Retaining best employees
  • Giving employees a sense of purpose
  • Attracting top achievers
  • Increasing the cumulative ability, experience, and diversity in the workforce
  • Creating an employee-centric culture
  • Compete better with other employers in the market, as poaching attempts are unlikely to succeed.

Why is a career development roadmap important for individuals?

The career planning process makes individuals aware of career opportunities. It also assists you in selecting the right profession and setting your priorities right. A well-defined career development plan will help you to take charge of your own professional advancement. Over time, there are only two things that really keep a career going, the professional network you build up. Second, your work ethic and sense of responsibility. There is always a time when you are at a crossroads, and motivation will flag. At that time, the career roadmap clarifies the way forward. Be sure to prepare or download a world-class one and consult it often.

How to Create Your Career Portfolio in Microsoft PowerPoint

With a career portfolio, you can showcase your achievements and samples of your work to potential employers. Here's how to create yours in PowerPoint.

Whether you're looking for a new employer, changing industries, or becoming an online freelancer, a career portfolio can make you stand out from hundreds of competitors. By creating a visual presentation of your skills and achievements, you can make a unique document that'll compel people to invite you for an interview.

But what if you don't know how to use Adobe Photoshop or Canva? Don't worry; you can create a captivating career portfolio using Microsoft PowerPoint! Here's how.

1. Choose a Clean Template

If you know your way around Microsoft PowerPoint, you can make a career portfolio from scratch. But, to make your life easier, choose from the thousands of free templates you can download from Microsoft.

Launch PowerPoint and, from the Home Page, choose New . In the New tab, you'll see template options to choose from. You can also search for other designs if you don't see anything you like. However, ensure your template is clean and free from distractions, so your employer/client can focus on your details.

As an example, let's create a writer's career portfolio. Click on your preferred template (we'll use Orange burst), then select the Create button that appears in a new window.

2. Customize Your Introduction

You don't have to keep the original image on the template. Unless you're applying for a farming position, the oranges-in-a-dish stock image in the Orange burst template isn't appropriate for most positions.

Right-click on the stock image, mouse over to Change Picture , then choose any of the appropriate options. If you already have an image saved on your computer, select This Device . But if you don't have one ready yet, choose From Stock Images or From Online Sources to source Creative Commons photos online.

You can also choose From Icons if you want to use a black and white icon (but we don't recommend this) or From Clipboard if you've already copied an image and want to use that instead.

We'll use a Creative Commons typewriter stock image from Bing for this example. Once you've selected the photo you want, you can also change how your slide looks by clicking Design > Design Ideas .

Once you've settled on a final look, replace the text on the first slide with your details. Write your name and the position you're applying for. You can also add your profile photo cropped in a perfect circle . Doing so is optional, but helps the person reading your profile see you.

To do so, go to Insert > Shapes . In the dropdown menu, choose Oval, then click anywhere on the slide to insert a circle. Afterward, right-click the circle you just created and choose Format Shape .

In the Format Picture pane, select Fill > Picture or texture fill , then under Picture source , choose Insert . In the Insert Pictures window, click From a File , then insert your portrait image.

Ensure you're using a high-quality image and that your details are clear and easy to read. Paying attention to details is essential as this is the first impression you leave on your future employer or client.

3. Outline Your Details

After showing your name and position, add the rest of your details in the following slides. We're going to add the following information:

  • About : This says what you exactly do.
  • Experience : This shows your professional history. If you're a fresh grad, you can include other experiences like internships, school projects, thesis, and even informal employment.
  • Portfolio : This section could be one slide or multiple slides. The portfolio section is crucial if you're applying for a creative position. But even if you're not targeting a creative job, you can use this to show the employer/client a preview of your output.
  • Education and Training : Lists your educational background and other relevant training you have undertaken.
  • Contact : Include your contact details.

Your writing should always be concise and straightforward. Avoid using jargon and only focus on relevant information. Don't include skills or experiences that aren't important to what you're applying for. Also, ensure your text is easy to read. Avoid cursive or stylistic font, and use a large font size.

Add your next slide by going to Home > New Slide . In the dropdown menu, select Content with Caption to add a slide showing your details. This type of slide is typically divided into two: you can use the left column as a table of contents and the right column for your main content.

On the left column, select the " Click to add text " text box and write your name. If you added a profile photo on your first slide, copy it from there and paste it above your name. Afterward, select the text box under your name and write the sections we've listed above.

To highlight the current section your reader is on, change its font color or add an underline. For this example, we're changing the font color to light red, putting it in bold, and increasing the font size.

4. Add an About You Page

The About section contains your objective and what you can exactly offer. You can break this down into two sections. Write the first one in paragraph form, telling the client/employer what you do in general. This part can be as short as one sentence and only gives an overview of your expertise.

On the other hand, the second section is in bullet form and lists your exact proficiencies for the job. You don't have to list everything you do—only pick the five most important things that impact your application.

5. List Your Experience

Create a new slide to outline your professional experience. Instead of adding a new blank slide, duplicate the last slide you made to save time. To do so, right-click the last slide you made in the slide preview pane, then choose Duplicate Slide .

After making the new slide, delete the main text you created in the last slide. Also, don't forget to update the highlighted section on your table of contents.

List your chronological professional history in this section. However, you don't have to write down everything—only include your recent and relevant experience. If you don't have professional experience yet, distill your life experiences, like significant school projects, internships, and informal employment, and list them as your relevant experience.

6. Insert Your Best Work Samples

After you list your experience:

  • Create the Portfolio slide.
  • Again, use the Duplicate Slide technique to save time.
  • Don't forget to update the highlighted section and remove the main text of the previous slide.

The Portfolio Page(s) is where you insert samples of your work. If you're a visual artist, it's as simple as adding images of your work. But if you're a professional, use screenshots of your output or achievements. Just ensure you didn't sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), and you're allowed to share what you add here.

Don't be afraid to use multiple slides to showcase your best, but limit it to five slides, at most. If your content doesn't fit in one screenshot, don't be afraid to include a clickable link.

7. Describe Your Education and Training

For this section, write down your education and other relevant training and certificates you've earned. You should always include your highest attainment in this section. If you've completed a bachelor's degree, include that in your list, plus any graduate and post-graduate degrees you've earned.

For training and certificates, you should only include them if they're relevant and from a reputable institution.

8. Provide Your Contact Information

Your career portfolio should always contain information on how you can be reached. After all, if the person reading your document likes what they see but can't get in touch with you, its purpose is defeated.

It's essential to add your email, telephone number, and professional social media accounts there. If you have one, don't forget to add your website. Lastly, you can also add your personal social media pages here, but only if you prefer.

To make your portfolio look more professional, you can use icons instead of words to represent your details. Once you've deleted the previous text from the duplicated slide, click on " Click to add text " text box and add the details you need.

After adding your details, go to Insert > Icons to add the pertinent icons. A new window will appear where you can search for the icons you need. Select the icons you want and then press Insert to add them to your slide.

When you've completed your portfolio, go to File > Save . Type your file name in the given form, then click on the file type options dropdown menu and choose PDF (*.pdf) for faster sharing.

Clean and Simple Is the Way to Go

When making your career portfolio, always go straight to the point. When your document is straightforward and easy to understand, your client or employer will better appreciate your skills, experience, and what you can bring to the organization.

A great career portfolio can land you an interview for your dream job. But if you're at a loss what to put in it because you have zero work experience, here are some tips to help you.

Descriptions of career presentations

Career planning foundations.

Many students come to IUPUI to prepare for a career, but have few or no concrete plans . This interactive session demonstrates the importance of setting major and career exploration goals now. Students will be able to identify personal traits to consider and will understand career exploration using information, people resources, and their own experiences. This presentation is ideal for introducing career planning to students (25–30 minutes).

FOCUS results

The FOCUS assessment, our free online assessment tool, can help students better articulate their values, interests, skills, and personality traits and can assist students in making connections between that information and major and career options that might be a good fit for their unique characteristics.

In this presentation, we discuss the purpose and benefits of assessments in career planning, provide insights into students’ results, and demonstrate how the instrument can be used as a resource for additional career exploration. You may choose to play this FOCUS overview video to introduce how to navigate FOCUS prior to students taking the assessment.

Students should use the  FOCUS assignment  to complete the assessment and begin processing on their own prior to this presentation (30–45 minutes or based on time available).

Networking and informational interviews

Encourage students to get the inside scoop on careers by speaking to people in their fields. People connections are a vital part of career exploration and planning. Students will learn what networking is, who is in their network, and how they can grow their network and make professional connections. This presentation also teaches students the power of informational interviewing and how to use this form of networking to learn about occupations, positions, and organizations. We discuss how and where to find contacts, what to ask, and the importance of following up. This presentation can accompany the informational interviewing  major career resource guide  (30–45 minutes).

Parallel planning for health care majors

Parallel planning is an expectation for all students entering health and life science fields. Most students don’t know about the wide variety of majors and careers available to them in the health care arena and developing a parallel plan early in their college careers ensures that students have explored all of their options and that they have targeted majors for which they will be both engaged in and admissible to. This presentation covers the importance of parallel planning and exposes students to available resources for developing a parallel plan.  The parallel planning major career resource guide can be used to accompany this presentation (30–40 minutes).

Fun with career games

While formal presentations are great, sometimes everyone needs a change of pace. Let us facilitate fun career-related games that sneak learning in along the way! Choices include:

Majors for Humanity Like Cards Against Humanity, Majors for Humanity is a hilariously fun game! It exposes students to those majors that can solve problems in today’s society. Students are encouraged to think outside the box and make a case for why the major they choose from their cards is the one to offer the skills and abilities to solve the problem presented.

Career Taboo Just like in Taboo, Career Taboo has words you cannot say. Students take turns in describing a career without using the obvious words to describe it so others can guess the career. A student has one minute to get through as many careers as they can. Each guessed card is a point for the team, the team that ends with the most points wins! Students will then create a description of their preferred career without using the job title and sharing with other players to see if anyone can guess it.

Major Taboo Just like in Taboo, Major Taboo has words you cannot say. Students take turns in describing a major without using the obvious words to describe it so others can guess the major. A student has one minute to get through as many majors as they can. Each guessed card is a point for the team, the team that ends with the most points wins! Students will then create a description of their preferred career without using any names of majors and sharing with other players to see if anyone can guess it. In addition, there is a one-minute challenge for students to list as many of the majors at IUPUI as they can think of.

Values Card Sort This activity helps students prioritize what is important to them to see in their future careers. Most students haven’t thought of how their values and ethics fit with the career path they’ve set out on. This allows students to place these in order of what is most important and not so important for them personally. Discussions will encourage students to think about how they can use this list to make informed decisions.

Students report that they feel better able to make an informed decision regarding their major and career options after these presentations. Click below to schedule yours today!

Students are 'Defying Expectations' at UMPI's annual University Day

P RESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Students of all grade levels showcased research they’re doing inside and outside the classroom for University Day at the University of Maine Presque Isle.

Many of the students have been working on their presentations through the school year, or longer, according to Stacey Emery, the University Day chair.

“Some of their presentations are over information that they’ve been researching or working on for their whole college career,” explains Emery.

Some of the presentation topics included education, science, arts, and diversity. The theme for this year’s University Day was “Defying Expectations”.

“Students are going above and beyond,” Emery says while explaining this year’s theme. “A lot of our students are post-pandemic students that have learned in different modalities before they came to the university, and they’re still just doing the latest and greatest of things that are happening in academics and beyond.”

The presentations, which lasted 50 minutes, were given throughout the day on Wednesday. Many of the students were excited to share their work with their peers and the community.

Ricky Goupille, a senior Professional Communication and Journalism student who was presenting at University Day, says he enjoys sharing his work with his peers.

“I like showcasing what we’ve been doing because people don’t always know what we do as PCJ students,” Goupille says. “It’s college, you don’t always talk about your academics, so I think this is a good setting to do that.”

Kyle Nichols, a fellow senior PCJ student who was presenting alongside Goupille, added that it’s beneficial to share research with students outside of their major.

“Me and [Goupille] talk about the work that we do on a daily basis because we’re in class together, but we don’t really talk to anybody else about it, that’s just how it goes,” Goupille says. “I think it’s nice to have a day where you kind of get to share what you want to share.”

UMPI hosted TedTalk speaker and neurodiversity expert Haley Moss as the keynote speaker on Tuesday as a part of their University Day events.

“I am an attorney, an author, an artist, and I am autistic,” Moss told WAGM. “I am very proud to get to advocate on behalf of and with the disability community in order to gain more acceptance, understanding, inclusion, and create more accessibility for everybody.”

Moss came to Presque Isle to speak to increase education opportunities surrounding advocacy.

“This type of information, this type of education, these types of programs, all those types of stuff should be accessible to anybody no matter where you are,” Moss says. “It shouldn’t just be people in big cities or people at big corporations, it should be anybody who wants to learn.”

All these educational opportunities were free and open to the public.

Experiential Learning

Recorded five-minute video presentations for the Undergraduate Scholarly Showcase in Category B: Experiential Learning, Projects B-01 through B-04.

B-01: Envisioning the Future of the University of Cincinnati's International Experience Program

Kyle Carnell, Communication Sarah Steinhaus, Communication Tori Clark, Communication Project Advisor: Michael Sharp Watch presentation

When exploring the future possibilities of the University of Cincinnati's International Experience Program, conducting market research on international service learning and utilizing data obtained to identify opportunities and recommendations for expansion was key. By analyzing the data received in the form of a university wide survey, we were able to comprehensively identify two new preferential service-learning locations which, in turn, provided the program coordinators a valuable and exciting insight into what the future could hold for the university and its students. A comprehensive, detailed and informative deliverable was compiled which will help shape the vision for the program's future generation of participants.

B-02: The Future of Global Experiential Learning: Paving the Way for Future Students

Logan Lusk, Communication Josh Niehaus, Communication Nathan Hatcher, Communication Lilia Colon, Communication Project Advisor: Michael Sharp Watch presentation

This video presentation will tell the story of our overall project charge throughout the semester in the service-learning Collaboratory. Our overall charge is to find potential partners for the service learning Collaboratory course as well as the International Experience Program (IEP). These partners will idealistically create new horizons and opportunities for students taking part in the course as well as a chance to involve more diverse departments at the University of Cincinnati into the course and its respective students. Additionally, we're also devising and marketing strategies and tactics to encourage students to enroll in the course, completed alongside a brochure to tell those may be interested more about the opportunities that it offers.

B-03: Service Learning-Collaboratory: India Experiences

Julia Miller, Communication Caroline Bahner, Communication Sarah Huffman, Communication Kate Bertsch-Jones, Communication Project Advisor: Michael Sharp Watch presentation

This video presentation will tell the story of broadening the University of Cincinnati's network by establishing connections with local and regional partners to create opportunities for UC students in India. Furthermore, our commitment extends to developing a comprehensive portfolio outlining the framework of the CCPS UC International Experiential Program in India. By meticulously documenting every aspect of the program, we aim to encapsulate its essence and vision by the project's culmination.

Our methods included fully understanding the problem set as assigned by the client. This required us to not only research the client but to interact with the client several times, asking critical questions, and ensuring that we fully understood what was being asked. This step was followed by identifying potential solutions which were vetted with the client, this, after having an ambitious list the third-party providers who were contacted via email. After hearing back from potential partners, we shared this information with the client. The client then identified those of which we should reach out to and pursue. We then established connections and pivoted towards the process of creating final deliverables for the client.

This research experience has benefitted the group tremendously including the individuals in it. We have learnt to wrestle with ambiguity, overcoming obstacles, and demonstrating collective impact within our group and larger class so that our final deliverable for the client will be of high value and impact. The final deliverable given to the client included a vetted partner, and a detailed portfolio of potential curriculum.

B-04: Service-Learning Collaboratory: International Education Opportunities

Erin Fultz, Communication Nina Jaeger, Communicaiton Shane Farrell, Communication Project Advisor: Michael Sharp Watch presentation

This video presentation will display the progress and outcomes of our group's mission to incorporate service learning into the faculty-led study abroad in Vancouver, Canada. The research team worked alongside the College of Cooperative Education and Professional Studies and the International Experience Program to bring the University of Cincinnati's service-learning program abroad. At the time of writing, we were working with the client to finalize the budget and itinerary for said trip to Vancouver as well as finding an organization to partner with for experiential learning. We were able to confirm the itinerary and budget with the client; elaborating on the previous itinerary and budget being used for the trip. We also developed marketing materials and strategies to present to students in an effort to gain interest. The client used these materials to plan the upcoming Service-Learning trip to Vancouver, Canada, and the introduction of UC's Service-Learning program abroad.
