Until recently, cultural studies was a part of knowledge that was treated by the academic world in an ambivalent way. On one hand, there was a belief that the humanities, including the social sciences, in some way belong to each other, with the understanding that they at least partly create a common field. On the other hand, there was a visible tendency to diversify the expanding specializations, by creating new disciplines of knowledge which were separated from the original core. Cultural studies were perceived as an eclectic type of knowledge embracing almost everything, starting with demography and archeology through sociology, psychology and history, also encompassing economics and cultural management. This situation was also expressed by the institutional structure of scientific disciplines. Nowadays it has become apparent that this postmodern fragmentization of culture is petering out. This has created the necessity of a new synthesis in the humanities. It has resulted in the institutionalization of ‘cultural studies’ for which the Polish equivalent can be expressed as ‘kulturoznawstwo.’ Moreover, in relation to postmodernism, (especially models of postmodern narration and phenomena such as over interpretation while analyzing an investigated object), which is a common feature of all the humanities, we may go beyond the postmodern canons. While postmodernism is becoming the subject of reflection in the history of knowledge, there are new methodological propositions coming to light. They are partly the continuation of but also the opposition to postmodern depictions. In that exact moment, cultural studies as a scientific discipline arises. These two reasons, one institutional and the other thematic, have become an invitation for discussion about the identity of cultural studies as a field of knowledge. The aim of the conference was to bring together researchers who are engaged in research on culture. The discussion was not limited to their differences, but also included common points in particular disciplines. The research subject has taken the first step towards formulating a general methodology of the science of culture. The variety of presented research perspectives and the problems which cultural studies will face points towards the necessity of further ventures which would organize and order both subjects and methods of cultural studies research. The opportunity to take more profound reflections and desired polemics in this field will surely be included in the publication of the post-conference materials.

The crossing of disciplinary boundaries by the new humanities and the “humanities-tocome”is lumped as “cultural studies” in a very confused way.The term, cultural studies, wascoined by Richard Hoggart in 1964; and the movement was inaugurated by Raymond Williams’ Culture and Society (1958) and by The Uses of Literacy (1958), and it became institutionalized in the influential Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies [CCCS], founded by Hoggart in 1964. It is evident that much of what falls under cultural studies could easily be classified under various other labels such as marxism, structuralism, new historicism, feminism and postcolonialism. Since the term has become popularized, I would not focus on why it is named so. Instead, the concern of this paper is to provide a deep theoretical understanding of cultural studies. Cultural studies analyzes the social, religious, cultural, discourses and institutions, and their role in the society. It basically aims to study the functioning of the social, economic, and political forces and power-structure that produce all forms of cultural phenomena and give them social “meanings” and significance.

The main proposal of the article is to bring into focus humanism as a project which was always present in the Renaissance philology and is still into the main areas of reflection of the Enlightenment and Modernity. Introduction

Oftentimes, intercultural communication can be a positive or negative experience, especially when interacting with people from other countries or while travelling overseas. In such a case, there are a number of factors that come into play when conversing with different individuals. These factors will be analysed and discussed herein, coupled with theory and personal experience to develop a profile which can examined in order to identify with intercultural experiences in a cross-cultural context.

Description

Being in America, California to be exact, I was prone in facing the results of the implicative notions of diversity in the face of modern society. I simply needed to accept the fact that adjusting to others who do not completely speak English becomes an extensive necessity. One specific point of acquaintance that taught be about this necessity is that of the chance when I met an Indian boy. I had a strong background about the Indian culture because of my interest in the country and their people; besides the fact that I regularly visit country every now and then.

Facilitation of Communication

There were three major factors that helped facilitate the communication between me and the Indian boy; which included gender, background and values. Firstly, we were both male, and as such, were able to converse more freely than if the individual had been of the opposite gender. As we were both in high school at the time, we were only a few years apart, making the conversation easier to follow and similar in nature. Secondly, we were both well aware of each other’s backgrounds, as I had regularly visited India, and he had lived in India since his birth. This mutual understanding allowed the conversation to flow freely from topic to topic, yet remain in a similar line of thought. Furthermore, we both gained a respect for each other as the conversation continued, and this built a foundation for a good friendship into the future.

Thirdly, the cultural values we shared was one of the most significant factors that helped facilitate the communication between us. Intercultural awareness is shown to account for a more fluid and dynamic relationship between people of different countries (Baker, 2012). Therefore, the cultural values were quite similar and made it more of a friendly conversation that built our friendship upwards. In particular, these values included respect and courteousness, which we both displayed when communicating with each other over the period of our conversation.

Inhibitive Factors of Communication

However, there were some inhibiting factors in our communication that led to the repealing of our views on certain subjects. One of these factors was the language barrier. Although we were both conversing in English, his education in English was not as advanced as mine, as he was born and raised in India, where the primary language is not English; whereas I had been brought up in America, where the common language is English. Therefore, during the course of the conversation, certain terms had to be repeated, and this led to changes in our views on subjects such as lifestyle differences and cultural attitudes.

The other factor that may have inhibited our communication was commonly held beliefs. The Indian boy that I was talking with had pre-conceived notions that were based on rumours he had heard about the laid-back lifestyle of Americans, which he had confused with laziness. I had to explain to him the major differences between the two concepts, which he struggled with accepting. Research shows that there is a negative relationship between differences in behaviour and intercultural communication competence (Arasaratnam and Banerjee, 2011; Hinnenkamp, 2009). However, we were able to reach a common understanding, although it took some time.

Theory in Practice

Much of the intercultural experience can be analysed through the lens of theoretical concepts, including motivational aspects, evidence of ethnocentrism or prejudice, as well as non-verbal differences. The primary motivation behind the meeting between the Indian boy and I seemed to be one of intrigue, as we both had not met, as aforementioned, but were deeply interested in identifying differences and perhaps similarities between the two of us. Although this was not a negative motivation, at times it seemed that the conversation was digressing into areas in which we both had limited understanding. This prompted me to steer the conversation to lighter topics, which helped brighten the mood.

However, there may have been a slight influence of prejudice, as the Indian boy firmly believed that the Indian lifestyle was better than the American lifestyle; although over the course of the conversation, I was able to change this view. In addition, the Indian boy’s barriers to communication were broken down once we were able to discuss topics which we were both familiar with, which ended in a good friendship.

Lastly, the non-verbal differences were clearly evident during the intercultural experience. The Indian boy had a fascinating way of blinking twice when surprised by ideas or facts about Australia that he had not come across before. This was a positive experience that I learned to appreciate about him, and once that I remember distinctly about the experience. I was also able to add humour into the experience, which was readily understood and embraced by the Indian boy. Therefore, it is shown that cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions often encompass intercultural communication competence (Arasaratnam, 2009).

In summary, the intercultural experience was overall a positive experience, which had major facilitators of communication, and also inhibitive factors in conversation. It could also be noted that both illustrated various theoretical concepts in practice. Relatively, this experience is rather enriching and personally developing in the sense that it taught me so much about adjusting to the manner of conversing with a non-English speaking individual therefore breaking the barriers of language limitations.

Study Objective (1)

I want to pursue a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Courses that I am especially interested in are Curriculum Design and Language Teaching Methodology. This degree is relevant to my educational background – A bachelor’s degree in English language and literature – and my current profession as a teaching assistant at Hasanuddin University and Muhammadiyah University. I am confident that a master’s degree will enhance my academic qualifications and help me gain professional development to become a full-time lecturer soon.

My experience as a teaching assistant and various English tutor positions are my most valuable assets in pursuing a master’s degree in TESOL. I will also contribute to the coursework that I will undertake by sharing my experiences teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia.

My skills and interest in TESOL have been further improved upon by the seminar and workshop that I participated in. As for study commitment, I believe my distinction as the best university graduate with a 3.99 GPA is a testament to my commitment to excel academically.

Firstly, I need to undertake my master’s degree in the US because I would like to be immersed in a different learning atmosphere. I also want to challenge myself to continue my studies in the United States and gain a more comprehensive knowledge of its cultural values. As a teacher of English as a foreign language, I believe that knowledge about the culture of an English-speaking country is fundamental as culture is an inseparable component of understanding a language. There is a need to share those cultural aspects with the students through designing a curriculum to combine language and culture learning. Hopefully, the students would be able to use the language in the appropriate cultural context and appreciate and respect foreign cultural values.

Furthermore, by continuing my studies in the US, there will be many opportunities to attend famous international TESOL conferences that are often held in the US. I will gain insight into current trends in English language teaching, connect with experts in TESOL, and learn from their research. Upon returning to Indonesia with my master’s degree in TESOL, I hope to teach a broader range of courses. At Hasanuddin University, the Faculty of Letters is planning to open a stream specifically for students interested in becoming English teachers as a foreign language. Meanwhile, Muhammadiyah University plans to start international classes in Teacher Training and Education. Both programs will make good use of the knowledge that I acquire in the US. Training teaching assistants will also be one of my goals. From my experience, the teaching assistant’s role in the university has never been given adequate acknowledgment.

I also intend to continue helping out the Lentera Negeri community, which helps make English language education available for less fortunate students. In the end, the chance given to me to continue my studies in the US would benefit me and help ensure the future development of Indonesian students and aspiring English language teachers.

Study Objective (2)

I am interested in studying for a master’s degree in English language and literature in the United States. The concentration within the field is Composition and Rhetoric. It is relevant to my educational background—Bachelor’s degree in English language and literature—and to the needs of the college where I am currently working. A master’s degree program will provide me with more in-depth learning and advanced training to have the expertise I need inside and outside the academic world. Indeed, a master’s degree will enhance my academic qualifications and help me gain professional development as an English lecturer in STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. In STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat, I teach English subjects. The subjects are Writing I (Paragraph development) and Writing II (Essay writing), Translation I (English-Indonesian translation) and Translation II (Indonesian-English translation), Cross-Cultural Understanding, Speaking III (Speech), and English Correspondence.

Recently, I have a plan to teach other subjects, such as Introduction to Literature, Reading Comprehension, Public Speaking, and Academic Writing. Since I do not possess a master’s degree, the chances of realizing the plan are still out of reach. Therefore, a master’s degree program in English language and literature will surely improve my knowledge base in those subjects to realize the plan mentioned above.

In the master’s degree program, I will focus my study on Composition and Rhetoric. This is because the college needs lecturers who have academic skills and experience in writing or rhetorical situations. The future objective is to accomplish my master’s degree program; I will take responsibility as an English lecturer whose specialization is writing. Besides, I will be involved as a member of the editorial board in the research unit of the college. The unit’s task is checking and revising the language of research articles before they are published in academic journals.

The head of the English department and Chairperson of the college have encouraged me to pursue a master’s degree by focusing on composition and rhetoric in English. They officially want me to serve as one of the trainers in the Professional Teacher Education (PTE) program in 2011 to teach subjects related to Writing in the college. The program itself is conducted under the regulation of the Directorate of Higher Education of Indonesia. Therefore, I need to understand composition and rhetoric to be admitted as a trainer in the program.

I want to obtain a master’s degree in English language and literature in the United States because it is an English-speaking country and has an excellent reputation for the quality of education. Studying English in the United States can help me acquire greater fluency in the English language, which, in turn, will help my future students. After completing my study, I will better understand English as a research field and a communicative tool when I come back to Indonesia. In addition, I will appreciate the cultural values of daily life in the United States. These values, then, can be shared with my students in the college to help them better understand the importance of cross-cultural understanding.

An additional thing that I want to learn in the United States is to know and understand how American students learn in their classes. In this case, I would love to share the knowledge of Indonesian cultures with students in the United   States. This activity will positively contribute to my personal experience as a lecturer. This kind of experience is rewarding for me. I want to apply the positive sides that I have seen in the United States to my STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat students.

Conducting research dealing with students’ ability in composing academic writing and sharing a well-shaped concept of English and American cultures with my students will benefit them in their university lives and the future. I also hope to enhance and promote the future or long-term objectives of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat, one of Indonesia’s critical educational assets. In the end, a Fulbright scholarship will help me ensure the future development of Indonesia’s students and teachers.

Study Objective (3)

Infrastructure is a primary driver for the economic growth of a nation. As a developing country, Indonesia is upgrading its infrastructure development and equitably expanding it to reduce the Eastern and Western Indonesia gap. Located in a complex geological condition urges geotechnical engineering to be conducted as an essential part of preliminary study for civil engineering works in Indonesia to prevent construction failure. While earning a bachelor’s degree in the Department of Geological Engineering Universitas Gadjah Mada, I focused my study on environmental geology. Geotechnics became one of the elective subjects. Having a piece of sound knowledge in understanding ground conditions and predicting potential geological hazards is the strength of a geologist. I decide to pursue a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering, particularly in underground construction and tunneling.

As a result of my excellent academic, I was chosen to participate in Indonesia Geology Olympiad 2014 as a leader of the engineering geology and hydrogeology team. It was a valuable chance to enhance my knowledge, especially slope stability. I obtained real experience by joining a community development service in 2013, empowering people to mitigate landslides in the area. It became a pioneer of landslide mitigation in Kandangserang, Pekalongan, which was then followed by installing an early warning system (EWS) in the next year.

I constantly challenge myself to study other topics of geotechnical engineering. I am currently working as a research assistant on a GEOCAP project looking at geomechanics in a geothermal reservoir. Although I have learned many topics, underground construction and tunneling have always attracted my interest. I believe it is projected as a future technology in Indonesia, especially in overcoming traffic congestion. However, research related to this has not been well developed yet. Studying this topic in a developed country with sophisticated construction technology will improve my theoretical and technical skills.

Although I have never traveled to the US, I have explored the quality of geotechnical engineering in the US by reading the textbook. Most fundamental books in geotechnical engineering come from US universities, making the US a house of dreams for people who want to advance their knowledge in this study. Furthermore, a great chance of a professional career as a geotechnical engineer enables me to gain practical experience by taking an internship. Excellent academic research and professional career will be a perfect combination of experience I will obtain from the US.

Continuing my study abroad will broaden my horizon and enhance my competitiveness in facing the ASEAN Economic Community and other global communities. Upon completing my master’s degree in geotechnical engineering, I hope to contribute to research and the academic sector. Lecturers in my department, mainly those who teach engineering geology and geotechnical engineering, earned their postgraduate degrees in Japan, Australia, and Europe. It might be the time to bring experience from the US.

Being a Fulbright awardee will open my way in connecting joint research between US universities and my department. In addition, Universitas Gadjah Mada, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (KemenPU-PERA), plans to open the first tunnel engineering program in Indonesia. It would be a good chance to implement my knowledge and upgrade the quality of geotechnics research, which still becomes the second priority in my department.

Study Objective (4)

As a policy advocate, I have been involved in Public Health campaigns and policy advocacy for more than five years. As a cycle of policy advocacy, I have done many important things, such as conducting policy research, writing a policy brief, and lobbying the government accordingly. As a tobacco control advocate, I have developed National TobaccoControl Roadmap, which is considered a crucial milestone in tobacco control advocacy in Indonesia.

Engaging with stakeholders and interacting with policymakers is dynamic and demands a broader perspective, knowledge, and skills. I am aware that I need to improve theoretical and practical exposure, which can benefit me in holding my responsibility. Specifically, I want to improve my understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I also want to improve my capacity to develop, advocate, and evaluate policy and enhance skills in technical policy analysis such as cost-benefit analysis, the survey of population problems, and so forth.

The United States’ tertiary education offers high-quality programs. It provides broader and new insights through the latest theory, trends, and advanced research that could enhance my theoretical and conceptual understanding of the development issue. The States abundance of best practices and experiences in developing public policy, specifically in light of tobacco control policy, will equip me to influence the policymaking process. Furthermore, living in a multicultural society will also give me an international perspective. It will furnish me with a broader knowledge of its cultural values.

Therefore I would like to pursue a master’s degree in public policy, which combines a theoretical and practical approach. Alternatively master of development will also fulfill my need to enhance my academic qualification and help me to gain more credibility in my professional development. I believe that academic exposure and the environment in the United States can provide what I need.

Upon completion of my study, there are two main things I want to do. First, I want to play a pivotal role in the Health Council of Muhammadiyah to mobilize the network in Muhammadiyah and other civil societies to implement the SDGs agenda. Indonesia failed to achieve some goals. Millennium Development Goals taught me that civil society ownership of the development agenda is crucial. Second, I will take a role within a world health organization to gain international influence regarding public health and development issues.

I am confident that the opportunity given to me to continue my studies in the US will enhance my capacity to take more roles and contribute to Indonesia as a developing country.

2024 Study Abroad Storytelling Contest celebrates past year of study abroad experiences

At the start of every semester at the University of Delaware, Blue Hens who have recently returned from studying abroad flock back to campus, eager to share their adventures and passion for global engagement with friends and loved ones. While it may be true that no two study abroad experiences are the same, they all have one thing in common: plenty of stories to go with them.

The Study Abroad Storytelling Contest , an annual tradition hosted by the Center for Global Programs and Services (CGPS), invites students to share their favorite study abroad photos and memories from the past school year. With more than 150 submissions from 18 different countries, this year’s competition represented the University’s growing list of partner institutions and extensive global education opportunities.

“We are proud that so many of our students are taking opportunities to explore the world beyond our campus and to grow into globally engaged citizens,” said Matt Drexler, director of study abroad at UD. “Their experiences abroad have a direct impact on our community, enriching discussions and offering international perspectives in and beyond the classrooms. We invite any opportunity for students to share their abroad experiences with the greater community.”

Julia Komorowski’s “Camels under the Moon” was the overall winner for the Living category in this year’s Storytelling Contest. Komorowski participated in faculty director Mohsin Siddiqui’s 2024 Winter civil and environmental engineering program in Dubai.

Every spring, the Storytelling Contest recognizes outstanding student photo submissions from each of three categories: Living, Learning and Loving the Location. Last year, CGPS introduced an additional essay component to commemorate the 100th anniversary of study abroad. This addition, modeled off of the International Student Essay Contest , offers another channel for students to share their stories. Together, the photo and essay portions celebrate the impact these programs have on the student experience and intercultural engagement. 

This year, senior Owen Bubczyk was awarded first place in the Loving the Location category for his photo submission, “Wedderburn Rainbow.”

An honors kinesiology major, Bubczyk spent this past winter session exploring New Zealand on a four-week study abroad program led by faculty directors Todd Royer and Nancy Getchell. Throughout the month, Bubczyk and his classmates engaged in experiential learning throughout Dunedin, Queenstown, Wellington and Raglan. While each site offered the scenic landscapes that New Zealand is best known for, Bubczyk was captivated by the views of Dunedin that were the backdrop to their first week of classes. 

During a two-day biking excursion in Wedderburn, Bubczyk noticed “a double rainbow sprawling from the mountains” and captured the view for his own memories. Later, it became the perfect submission for the Storytelling Contest.

Owen Bubzcyk’s “Wedderburn Rainbow” was the overall winner for the Loving the Location category in this year’s contest. Bubzcyk witnessed this view on a two-day bike tour in New Zealand while participating in the 2023 Winter kinesiology and applied physiology program led by Professors Nancy Getchell and Todd Royer.

While Loving the Location focuses on capturing the essence and energy of the study abroad locations, the Living category of the competition is intended to honor the people, creatures and places that become part of students’ lives while abroad. 

Eleanor Helm, a third-year honors student, was awarded third place in this category for her photo submission, “View from the Terrace.” 

Last fall, Helm participated in a semester-long program with the Department of Languages, Literature and Culture, where she developed her Spanish language skills and uncovered the art, history and culture of Granada, Spain. While Helm’s days were spent venturing into the city to explore the Alhambra and the beaches of Almunecar, at night she returned to her host family and the neighborhood she learned to call home. 

Helm’s prize-winning submission captures the view from her host family’s terrace, where she said she spent warm evenings looking out over the city and the Alhambra on the hill. While Helm’s photo captures just one of many beautiful sights from her time abroad, it is also a tribute to the people and place that shaped her experience. 

In Helm’s submissions to the UD Abroad Blog , she described the role her host family played in her language development. 

“Luckily, I have plenty of chances to practice with my host family,” Helm wrote. “The opportunity to speak with them and learn from them is one of the experiences I’m most thankful for … Not to mention the fact that their house is absolutely gorgeous and has incredible views of the Alhambra, the Moorish castle that overlooks the city.” 

Winning submissions from the Learning category focus on the academic side of study abroad, sharing photos from an international classroom, faculty-led excursions and experiential learning opportunities. 

On an excursion to the Randilen Wildlife Management Area in Tanzania, sophomore Grace Ferry snapped a photo of her classmates watching patiently for elephants, giraffes and gazelles. Her submission, titled “Learning to Use Our Binoculars,” was awarded first place in this category.

Her submission, “Learning to use our Binoculars,” was the overall winner for the Learning category of this year’s photo storytelling competition.

Other photo contest winners included Julia Komorowski, Ricky Kiamilev, Brooke Latone, Sean O’Malley, Paige Leishman and Stephanie Sullivan. In addition, three student writers — Jack Mullarkey, Kristina Smyth and Claire Reader — were honored in this year’s essay competition.

Mullarkey, a sophomore honors student, won first place for his essay, “Identity Transcends Borders.” In this piece, he reflected on a meaningful interaction he had while studying abroad in Granada, Spain this past winter. 

“For one of the first times during my experience in Spain, I had felt like I had made a personal connection with someone from the country, and it had nothing to do with being American or Spanish,” Mullarkey wrote. 

With winning submissions from 11 different study abroad programs, this year’s competition celebrated student experiences in Dubai, India, Italy, Latvia, Spain, Tanzania, the British Virgin Islands and New Zealand. 

All winning photos and essays will be on display at International Coffee Hour at Trabant University Center on Friday, May 10, for the entire UD community to admire. They are also posted on the  Storytelling Contest web page .
