भारत में समय समय पर अनेक त्योहार मनाएं जाते है. इन त्योहारों में दिवाली या दीपावली एक प्रमुख त्योहार है. यह त्योहार कार्तिक माह की अमावस्या के दिन मनाया जाता है. ऐसा माना जाता है, कि इस दिन भगवान श्रीराम चौदह वर्ष का वनवास पूरा कर अयोध्या लौटे थे.

इस ख़ुशी में अयोध्या के लोगो ने घी के दिए जलाए थे. उसी स्मृति में यह त्योहार ख़ुशी के पर्व के रूप में हर साल मनाया जाता है. दीवाली से दस पन्द्रह दिन पहले घरों की साफ़ सफाई और रंग रोगन का कार्य हो जाता है.

धनतेरस के दिन लोग नए बर्तन खरीदते है. चतुर्दशी को छोटी दीपावली होती है. अमावस्या की रात को सभी घरों में दीपक जलाए जाते है, तथा लक्ष्मीजी की पूजा होती है. घरों में अच्छे अच्छे व्यंजन बनते है, मिठाई खायी जाती है, बच्चें फटाखें व फुलझड़ियाँ जलाते है.

प्रस्तावना- हमारे देश में वर्ष भर अनेक पर्व और त्योहार मनाए जाते है. दीपावली भारतीय संस्कृति और धर्म की द्रष्टि से यह मनाया जाता है. दीपों के इस त्यौहार को देश भर के सभी लोग बड़े हर्ष और उल्लाश के दिन मनाया जाता है.

इस पर्व से कुछ दिन पूर्व तक सरकार द्वारा दीपावली का राजकीय अवकाश घोषित कर दिया जाता है. जिससे लोग इसकी तैयारियों में जुट जाते है.

मनाने का समय- दीपावली का त्यौहार कार्तिक मास में मनाया जाता है. धनतेरस से भाईदूज तक यह त्यौहार मनाया जाता है.

अमावस्या की रात को लक्ष्मी पूजन के साथ दीपावली का पर्व मनाया जाता है. इस दिन लोग अपने घरों में दीपों व् दीपमालाओ की कतारे लगाकर घर को पूर्ण रूप से सजाते है.

दीपावली दो शब्दों दीप और अवली से मिलकर बना हे. दीप का मतलब होता है दीपक और अवली का मतलब होता हे पंक्ति अर्थात दीपों की पंक्तियाँ. हमारे देश में प्रति वर्ष अनेक त्यौहार मनाये जाते है.

हिन्दुओं के त्यौहारों में रक्षाबंधन, होली, दशहरा और दीपावली प्रमुख त्यौहार है. इस त्यौहार पर लोग दीपक को पंक्तियो में रखकर रौशनी करते है. दीपक का त्यौहार होने के कारण इसे दीपावली या दिवाली कहा जाता है.

कहते है इसी दिन भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने गोवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी ऊँगली पर उठाकर मुसलाधार वर्षा से ब्रज की रक्षा की थी. इसके बाद भाई दूज का त्यौहार मनाते है.

दीपावली का अर्थ

दीपावली और दिवाली का एक ही अर्थ होता है. कुछ लोग इन्हें दियाली और दिपाबली भी कहते है. मुख्यत ये संस्कृत भाषा का शब्द है.

जिसका अर्थ होता है दीपों की लाइन. अवली को पक्ति श्रेणी या लाइन भी कहा जाता है. इस तरह दीपक की माला या पक्ति को दीपावली कहा जाता है. इसी कारण इसे दीपोत्सव भी कहा जाता है.

जिस तरह मुस्लिम सम्प्रदाय के लिए ईद, ईसाईयों के लिए क्रिसमस और सिख सम्प्रदाय के लिए बैशाखी और लाहोड़ी का महत्व है. ठीक उसी प्रकार यह दीपों का त्यौहार हिन्दू वर्ग के अनुनायियों के लिए बड़ा उत्सव है.

इस पंचदिवसीय पर्व की शुरुआत धनतेरस से होती है इसके बाद नरक चतुदर्शी और अगले दिन दिवाली इसके बाद के उत्सव गौवर्धन पूजा एवं भाई दूज के रूप में जाने जाते है.

दीपावली क्यों मनाते हैं कहानी/कथा

पुरा काल में राजा दशरथ जी के घर जन्मे श्रीराम से Diwali Story जुड़ी मानी जाती है. राम जी के पिता दशरथ अयोध्या के शासक थे, जो वर्तमान में उत्तरप्रदेश का बड़ा शहर है.

वृद्धावस्था में दशरथ जी ने अपने उतराधिकारी राम को बनाया, मगर पूर्व वर्षो में किसी घटना में कैकेयी (दशरथ की रानी) को उनके प्राण बचाने के कारण एक वर दिया था.

कैकेयी ने पुत्र मोह में आकर राम की जगह अपने बेटे भरत को अयोध्या का शासक बनाना चाहा, तथा उन्हें वर के उपयोग की तकरीब सूझी.

तभी कैकेयी ने अपने वर के रूप में राम को चौदह साल का वनवास और भरत को राजगद्दी दिलाने का आग्रह किया. अपने पिता के वचन के चलते राम ने वनवास जाना उचित समझा तथा भाई लक्ष्मण और पत्नी सीता के साथ वन को गये.

वनवास के 14 वें साल में लंका के शासक रावण की बहिन सूर्पनखा के लक्ष्मण द्वारा नाक काट दिए जाने पर राक्षसराज ने प्रतिशोध के रूप में सीता का अपहरण कर लिया.

सीता हरण की जब राम को खबर मिली तो उन्होंने सीता का पता लगाने के लिए वानर राज सुग्रीव की मदद ली तथा लंका पर चढ़ाई की.

कई महीनों के यत्न के बाद राम और रावण का युद्ध भूमि में सामना हुआ, फलस्वरूप रावण मारा गया तथा राम सीता सहित अपना वनवास पूरा कर अयोध्या आए.

अयोध्या के लोगों ने जब राम के आने की खबर पता चली तो उन्होंने घी के दिए जलाकर पुरुषोतम राम का स्वागत किया. इसी परम्परा का निर्वहन करते हुए आज भी घी के दिए जलाकर दिवाली का उत्सव मनाया जाता है.

दीपावली पर्व का महत्व

दीपावली के उत्सव पर लोग अपने घरों की मरम्मत, सफ़ेदी आदि का कार्य करवाते हैं| लोग धर्म और आस्था के साथ माँ लक्ष्मी की पूजा आराधना करते है. तथा लक्ष्मी के स्वागत के लिए अपने घर और दूकान को दुल्हन की तरह सजाते है.

व्यापारियों के लिए इन पांच दिनों में सबसे अधिक खरीददारी होती है. दीपावली से नये वर्ष की शुरुआत होती है तथा नए बही खाते बनाए जाते है.

सरकारी कर्मचारियों को लम्बी छुट्टिया मिलती है जिससे वे अपने स्वजनों के साथ इस पर्व को मना पाते है. चारो ओर घी के दियों की रोशनी से वर्षा ऋतू में पनपे जीवाणु और कीट भी समाप्त होते है. जिससे पर्यावरण को स्वच्छ रखने में मदद मिलती है.

कई दिनों तक घरों की साफ़ सफाई और रंग रोगन से स्वच्छता का माहौल बनता है. जैन धर्म के लोग इसे महावीर स्वामी के निर्वाण दिवस के रूप में मनाते है. सिख सम्प्रदाय में इसे मुक्ति दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है, इस दिन हरगोबिन्द जी को जेल से मुक्ति मिली थी.

दीपावली भारत में मनाया जाने वाला एक ऐसा त्यौहार है जिसका धार्मिक ही नही बल्कि बड़ा सामाजिक और वैज्ञानिक महत्व भी है. कहने को तो यह हिन्दू धर्म का त्यौहार माना जाता है, मगर भारत में सभी धर्मो सम्प्रदायों के लोग इसे बड़े उत्साह के साथ मनाते है.

दीपावली का शाब्दिक अर्थ होता है दीपों की पक्ति . इस दिन लोग दीपों को अपने घर व् बाहर पक्तिबद्ध रुप से सजाते है. इस तरह यह प्रकाश यानि रोशनी का पर्व है.

इसे कार्तिक महीने के कृष्ण पक्ष की अमावस्या के दिन मनाया जाता है. धन और एश्वर्य की देवी कही जाने वाली देवी माँ लक्ष्मी की इस दिन विशिष्ट पूजा अराधना की जाती है.

दीपावली मनाने का तरीका

आज के समय में लोग इस पर्व पर दियो की बजाय मोमबत्ती का अधिक उपयोग करते है. साथ ही शहरी व नगरीय क्षेत्र में विभिन्न रंगो की रोशनी के बिजली के बल्बों का उपयोग भी बेहद लोकप्रिय है.

इस दिन पूरा देश दियों व लाइट्स से जगमगा उठता है. शहरों में भले ही दिवाली की चकाचौध अधिक हो मगर भारत के गाँवों में आज भी घी के दियों के साथ यह उत्सव बड़े धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है . जो हमारी ग्रामीण संस्कृति की सुन्दरता का परिचायक है.

इस दिन लोग अपने परिवार जनों व रिश्तेदारों को मिठाइयाँ और उपहार भेट करते है, घर घर में सुंदर रंगोलियाँ बनाई जाती है. अन्य उत्सवो भी भांति दीपावली का त्योंहार भी बच्चों के लिए विशेष महत्व का है.

दिवाली के कुछ दिन पूर्व से ही बच्चें पटाखों और फुलझड़ियो कों चलाने में मग्न रहते है तथा इस उत्सव का पूरा लुफ्त उठाते है.

दीपावली पर लक्ष्मी पूजा

लक्ष्मी पूजा के पूर्व का एक दिन नर्क चतुर्दशी कहलाता है. पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार इस दिन भगवान् श्री कृष्ण ने नरकासुर नामक राक्षस का वध किया था. इस दिन को नर्क चतुदर्शी मनाई जाती है.

इससे पूर्व का एक दिन धनतेरस के रूप में मनाया जाता है. जिन्हें धन त्रयोदशी भी कहा जाता है. इस दिन सोना चांदी और धातु के बर्तनों की खरीददारी करना शुभ माना जाता है.

लक्ष्मी पूजा यानि दीपावली के दुसरे दिन गौवर्धन पूजा होती है. कहते है इस दिन भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने इसी दिन देवराज इंद्र को पराजित किया था तथा गौवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी अंगुली पर उठाया था.

दीपावली मनाने के पीछे कई कारण जुड़े हुए है रामायण की धार्मिक कथा के अनुसार भगवान श्री राम आज ही दिन चौदह वर्ष का वनवास काटकर अयोध्या लौटे थे.

लम्बे समय बाद राम सीता लक्ष्मण के दर्शन और आगमन की ख़ुशी में अपने घर और पुरे अयोध्या नगर को दीपमालाओं से सजा दिया था. उस दिन से लेकर आज तक हिन्दू धर्मावलम्बी कार्तिक कृष्ण अमावस्या के दिन को दीपावली के पर्व के रूप में मनाते आ रहे है.

दीपावली की कथा

लक्ष्मी पूजा और धन तेरस के सम्बन्ध में भी कहा जाता है कि इसी दिन समुद्र मंथन से लक्ष्मी जी की उत्पति हुई थी. इसी धारणा के चलते दीपावली के दिन धन और एश्वर्य की देवी माँ लक्ष्मी की विधिवत पूजा अर्चना की जाती है.

माना जाता है भारतीय चिकित्सा पद्दति के जनक और आयुर्वेद के प्रणेता भगवान धन्वन्तरी भी इस दिन जन्मे थे. इसलिए भी त्रयोदशी को धनतेरस के रूप में मनाया जाता है.

दीपावली मनाने का अपना सामाजिक महत्व भी है. कार्तिक कृष्ण अमावस्या तक किसान वर्ग खरीफ की फसल ले चुके होते है. अच्छी फसल के उत्पादन की ख़ुशी का इजहार करने का समय माना जाता है.

दिवाली का पूरा कैलेंडर यहां दिया गया है- 

शुभ दीपावली का उत्सव कार्तिक अमावस्या को मनाया जाता है और ज्योतिष शाश्त्र के अनुसार इस वर्ष दिवाली 12 नवंबर 2023, दिन रविवार को मनाया जाएगा। 

दीपावली को लेकर कई किस्से हैं लेकिन, हिंदू धर्म की मान्यताओं के अनुसार इस दिन भगवान राम, रावण को मारकर और 14 वर्षों का वनवास काटकर अयोध्या नगरी वापस लौटे थे, उनके आने की खुशी में अयोध्या वासियों ने घी के दीप जलाए व जश्न मनाया था और तब से भारत में दिवाली की शुरुआत हुई।

दिवाली को दीपावली भी कहा जाता है और इसके पीछे कारण यह है कि दीपावली संस्कृत शब्द से लिया गया है, जिसका का अर्थ होता है- दीप + आवलिः (कतार में रखे हुए दिप)।

प्राचीनकाल में दिवाली को दीपोत्सव के नाम से जाना जाता था, जिसका अर्थ है दीपों का उत्सव होता है। 

प्राचीन काल से दिवाली को विक्रम संवत के कार्तिक माह में मनाया जा रहा है। पद्म पुराण और स्कन्द पुराण में दिवाली का उल्लेख मिलता है। दिये को स्कन्द पुराण में सूर्य के हिस्सों का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाला माना गया है, जो जीवन के लिए प्रकाश और ऊर्जा का लौकिक दाता भी है।

उत्तर भारत में लोग मिट्टी के दीयों को जलाकर रावण को हराने के बाद श्री राम की अयोध्या वापसी का जश्न मनाते हैं, जबकि दक्षिणी भारत इसे उस दिन के रूप में मनाता है जब भगवान कृष्ण ने राक्षस नरकासुर को हराया था।

Essay on Diwali in Hindi ( दिवाली पर निबंध ): जैसा कि हमारे देश में कई तरह के त्योहार मनाए जाते है जिनका अपने आप में अलग अलग विशेषता और महत्व होती है। भारत में होली, दीपावली, रक्षाबंधन, ईद, लोहड़ी आदि त्योहार मुख्य रूप से मनाया जाता है। लेकिन ज्यादातर सबका पसंदीदा त्योहार दीपावली ही होता है। जिसका लोग बेचैनी से इंतजार कर रहे होते है। इस त्योहार का कुछ अलग ही माहौल होता है।

हमारे देश भारत में दिवाली को दीपावली के नाम से भी जानते है। Diwali(दिवाली) के बारे में सोचते ही आपके दिमाग में सबसे पहले क्या आता है?

जब भी दिवाली करीब आती है तो लाइट, fireworks (पटाखे), मिठाइयां और ड्राई फ्रूट्स आदि ऐसी चीजे मन में आती है। यह एक ऐसा अवसर होता है जब हमारे परिवार के सभी सदस्य दिवाली की रात मनाने के लिए एक साथ आते हैं।

दिवाली (Diwali) को हिंदू के सबसे बड़े festivals में से एक कहा जा सकता है जो न केवल भारत में बल्कि दुनिया भर में खुशी और सुंदर भाव के साथ मनाया जाता है। 

दीपावली का त्योहार हर साल october या november के महीने में होता है। यह विजयदशमी (vijayadashmi) के ठीक 20 दिन बाद मनाया जाता है। Deepawali दो शब्दों दीप या दीया और आवली शब्द से मिलकर बना है। दिवाली (Diwali) भारत में ही नही बल्कि विदेशों में भी हिंदुओं और अन्य गैर हिंदू समुदायों द्वारा मनाई जाती है जो वहां रहते हैं। इस त्योहार को अन्य समुदाय (बौद्ध,जैन आदि) के लोग भी मानते है।

दीपावली आने के लगभग 10 दिन पहले से ही सभी घरों में साफ सफाई होने लगती है।

लोग अपने अपने घरों, दुकानों आदि की साफ सफाई में जुट जाते है। और बहुत से लोग अपने  घरों या दुकानों को नया बनाने के लिए पेंट कराते है। कहा जाता है की दीपावली पर घरों की सफाई करना इसलिए जरूरी होता है क्योंकि इस दिन lord Ganesha और lordess lakshmi जी ही घरों में वास करते है।

बाजारों में खूब दौड़ भाग होती है। लोग इस मौके पर नए कपड़े, बर्तन, मिठाइयां और गणेश और लक्ष्मी जी की मूर्ति आदि खरीदते है। हिंदुओं द्वारा देवी lakshmi की पूजा की जाती है क्योंकि व्यापारी दिवाली के पर्व पर नई खाता बही की शुरुआत करते हैं। लोगों का मानना है कि यह खूबसूरत त्योहार सभी के लिए धन, समृद्धि और सफलता लाता है।

लोग खुशी और उत्साह के साथ दिवाली का पूरा आनंद लेते हैं। इस दिन घर में तरह तरह की मिठाइयाँ बनाई जाती हैं और दोस्तों और रिश्तेदारों में बाँटी जाती हैं। लोग अपने पड़ोसी और प्रिय लोगों को आमंत्रित करते हैं। लोग अपने रिश्तेदारों और दोस्तों से मिलने भी जाते हैं और गिफ्ट और सूखे मेवों का आदान प्रदान भी करते हैं।

वही कुछ लोग ऐसे भी जिनके यह त्योहार कुछ अलग ही रूप से मनाया जाता है जैसे शराब का सेवन, जुआ खेलना, टोना-टोटका करना और पटाखों के गलत इस्तेमाल से इसे ख़राब करने में जुटे रहते हैं। जो की समाज की बहुत बुरी आदत है। कम से कम इस दिन तो ये सोच बनाके रखना चाहिए की इस पावन अवसर पर ये बुरी आदत छोड़के अपने अंदर अच्छी आदतों का वास करना चाहिए।

बच्चे इस त्योहार का बेसब्री से इंतजार करते हैं।  उन्हें पटाखे फोड़ने और आतिशबाजी में खूबसूरत रंगोली बनाने और अपने घर को सजाने में भी मजा आता है।

यह त्योहार बहुत ही खूबसूरत और इमोशनल इतिहास के अंदर छिपा हुआ है।

हिंदू मान्यताओं के अनुसार इस त्योहार के दिन ही भगवान राम (Ram) 14 वर्षों के वनवास के बाद अपनी पत्नी सीता,भाई लक्ष्मण और उनके प्रिय भक्त हनुमान के साथ अयोध्या ( Ayodhya), राक्षस रावण और उसकी सेना को हराने के बाद, लौटे थे।

अमावस(Amavasya) की रात होने के कारण Diwali के दिन काफी अंधेरा होता है, जिस वजह से उस दिन पुरे Ayodhya को दीपों और फूलों से श्री Ram Chandra के लिए सजाया गया था ताकि भगवान राम के आगमन में कोई परेशानी न हो और तब से लेकर आज तक इसे दीपों का त्योहार और अंधेरे पर प्रकाश की जीत के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

उस समय पूरे अयोध्या के लोगों ने अपने प्रिय राजकुमार राम पत्नी सीता,भाई लक्ष्मण और हनुमान के साथ मिट्टी के दीये जलाकर और पटाखे फोड़कर स्वागत किया। 

दीपावली त्योहार के बारे में एक और पौराणिक कथा भगवान विष्णु के साथ देवी लक्ष्मी की शादी है। कहते है इस दिन देवी lakshmi ने भगवान विष्णुओ को चुना और उनसे विवाह किया। देवी लक्ष्मी को धन और समृद्धि देने के लिए भी जाना जाता है।

दूसरी तरफ यह भी है की Diwali हिंदुओं का सबसे ज्यादा मनाया जाने वाला त्योहार है। मुगल सम्राट जहांगीर( Jahangir) की कैद से Guru Govind की रिहाई की याद में सिख(Sikh) दीवाली मनाते हैं।

जैन धर्म में भी दीवाली को “महावीर निर्वाण दिवस” महावीर की शारीरिक मृत्यु और अंतिम मुक्ति के दिन के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

बौद्ध देवी लक्ष्मी की पूजा करके diwali मनाते हैं।

दीपावली के उत्सव के बारे में एक और मिथ्या यह है कि विष्णु के अवतार भगवान कृष्ण ने राक्षस नरकासुर (Narkasur) को मार डाला और राक्षस नरकासुर द्वारा बंदी बनाई गई 16000 से अधिक लड़कियों को रिहा कर दिया। जिस दिन भगवान कृष्ण ने नरकासुर का वध किया था, उसे दिवाली से एक दिन पहले नरक चतुर्दशी (Chaturdashi) के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

लोग diwali पर भगवान गणेश की पूजा करते हैं जो बाधाओं को दूर करने और तलाश करने के प्रतीक है। यह त्योहार पूरे देश का त्योहार है।  हिंदू पौराणिक कथाओं के लिए इसका बहुत महत्व है और लोगों को वास्तविक सुख और शांति के महत्व को समझने की जरूरत है।

यह बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत का त्योहार है। Diwali अच्छे कर्मों में विश्वास पैदा करती है और खुशी, आनंद और बुराई के अंत का दिन है। यह भारत के प्रत्येक शहर और शहर में और विदेशों में भी भारतीयों द्वारा असाधारण उत्साह के साथ मनाया जाता है। यह यूनिटी का प्रतीक बन जाता है।  भारत इस पर्व को हजारों सालों से मनाता आ रहा है और आज भी मनाता आ रहा है।

यह पांच दिन तक मनाने जाना वाला त्योहार है जिसमें अच्छा भोजन, आतिशबाजी, रंगीन रेत और विशेष मोमबत्तियां और दीपक शामिल हैं।  हिंदू जहां रहते हैं उसके आधार पर दीवाली की कहानी की व्याख्या करते हैं।

दीपावली कितने दिनों तक मनाते है?

दिवाली का यह त्योहार लगभग 5 दिनों तक मनाया जाता है। जिस के पहले दिन धनतेरस(Dhanteras) होता है। धनतेरस के दिन लोग धातु(Metals) की वस्तुओं जैसे सोने और चांदी के आभूषण को खरीद कर अपने घर जरूर लेकर जाते हैं।

Deepawali का दूसरा दिन नरक चतुर्थी के रूप में मनाया जाता है। कुछ लोग इस दिन को छोटी दिवाली के रूप में भी मनाते हैं।

तीसरा दिन deepawali त्योहार का मुख्य दिन होता है। इस दिन महालक्ष्मी और गणेश जी की पूजा की जाती है।

Deepawali के चौथे दिन गोवर्धन (Govardhan) पूजा की जाती है क्योंकि इस दिन भगवान कृष्ण ने इंद्र के क्रोध से हुई लगातार वर्षा से लोगों को बचाने के लिए गोवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी एक उंगली पर उठा लिया था।

दिवाली के त्योहार के आखिरी दिन को भाई दूज के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इस दिन पर बहन अपने भाई को रक्षा बांधकर मिठाई खिलाती है।

दीपावली से तमाम जानकारी प्राप्त करके हम इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुंच गए हैं की दिवाली को सभी उत्साहों में से एक माना गया है जिसका एक अलग ही महत्व है। Deepawali का त्यौहार असत्य पर सत्य की जीत और अंधकार पर प्रकाश की विजय का प्रतीक है।

दीपावली के त्योहार के दिन हमें अपने अंधकार को मिटाकर दीयों और रोशनी से पूरे एनवायरनमेंट को रोशन करना चाहिए। जैसा कि हम जानते हैं कि दीपावली के पर्व का अर्थ दीप, प्रेम और सुख समृद्धि होता है। इस दिन ऐसा कोई कार्य नहीं करना चाहिए जिससे किसी को दुख पहुंचे क्योंकि ऐसा करने से इस festival का कोई मतलब ही नहीं रह जाता। हमे हर दुखिजनों के साथ इस पर्व को celebrate करना चाहिए।

भेदभाव और अपने अंदर की बुराइयों का त्याग़ करना चाहिए। साथ ही साथ खुद के अंदर भी अंधकार को खत्म करके एक रोशन दीप जलाना चाहिए।

दुर्गापूजा की तरह दीवाली भी भारत के बड़े त्योहारों में एक है। यह हमारे देश में बड़े उत्साह के साथ मनायी जाती है। इसमें सभी तरह की जातियों, धर्मों और संप्रदायों के लोग दिल खोलकर भाग लेते हैं और सारे भेदभाव भुला देते हैं। अतः दीवाली हमारा एक महान राष्ट्रीय पर्व है। दिवाली को दीपावली भी कहते हैं।

दीवाली के आरंभ की अनेक पौराणिक कथाएँ प्रचलित हैं। एक कथा के अनुसार श्रीरामचंद्र जब 14 वर्ष के बाद रावण को मारकर सीता और लक्ष्मण के साथ अयोध्या लौटे तब सभी जगह खुशी के दीये जलाये गये। उसी विजय की स्मृति में यह दीवाली हर वर्ष मनायी जाने लगी। दूसरी कथा के अनुसार दीवाली उस दिन शुरू हुई, जब श्रीकृष्ण ने नरकासुर का वध किया। इसी खुशी में दीवाली का श्रीगणेश हुआ। तीसरी कथा है कि जब भगवान विष्णु राजा बलि के दान से प्रसन्न हुए, तब यह वर दिया कि सभी लोग बलि के नाम पर घी के दीये जलायेंगे। एक कथा यह भी प्रचलित है कि जब भगवान शंकर ने महाकाली का क्रोध शांत किया, तभी से दीवाली मनायी जाने लगी।

कथा चाहे जो भी हो, इन बातों से एक बात बिलकुल साफ है कि दीवाली हर साल हम भारतवासियों को जीवन का नया संदेश देने आती है और यह बताती है कि सत्य की जीत और असत्य की हार एक-न-एक दिन अवश्य होती है। यह हमारे जीवन का अंधकार दूर कर फुलझरियों की तरह नया प्रकाश बिखेरती है। हम अपने अंदर नवीनता का अनुभव करते हैं।

दीपावली दो शब्दों के मिश्रण से बना एक शब्द है। इसमें प्रथम दीप है तो दूसरा है आवली। दीप या दीया का अर्थ होता है, दीपक। जबकि आवली का अर्थ होता है, शृंखला। इस प्रकार दीपावली का शाब्दिक अर्थ है, दीपो की शृंखला। दीपावली को सामान्य बोलचाल की भाषा में दिवाली कहा जाता है। यह प्रत्येक वर्ष कार्तिक मास की अमावस्या को मनाया जाता है। कार्तिक मास की अमावस्या प्रायः अंग्रेजी महीने के नवंबर में आती है मगर कभी कभी यह अक्टूबर में भी आ जाती है। यह हिंदी महीने की कम या अधिक अवधि के कारण होता है।

जब भगवान श्री राम लंकापति रावण पर विजय के साथ अपने चौदह वर्ष की वनवास पूरी करके भार्या (पत्नी) सीता व अनुज भ्राता लक्ष्मण के साथ अपने घर की वापसी किया तो उस दिन अयोध्या प्रजा में खुशी की लहर दौड़ गई। वे अपने घरो व गली, सड़को की साफ – सफाई करके अपने राजा के आगमन का स्वागत करने लगे। चूंकि उस दिन अमावस्या थी और अमावस्या की रात अन्धकार भरी होती है। इसलिए प्रजाजन अपने घरो के बाहर दीप प्रज्जलित करके श्री राम के लौटने के मार्ग को प्रकाश से भर दिया ताकि भगवान श्री राम, माता सीता व लक्षमण को आने में कोई समस्या न हो, उन्हें हर जगह प्रकाश मिले। कहते है तभी से दिवाली मनायी जाने लगी। अब यही कारण है, दिवाली की रात को घर-बाहर दीपक जलाये जाते है। दिवाली न केवल श्री राम से नहीं बल्कि श्री कृष्ण से भी जुड़ी हुई है। इसी दिन भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने भयानक असुर नरकासुर का वध करके सोलह हजार स्त्रियों को मुक्त करवाया था। इसी खुशी में लोगो के द्वारा दिवाली मनाई जाने लगी।

दिवाली का त्यौहार पांच दिनों का होता है। इसका आरम्भ मुख्य दिवाली के दो दिन पहले धनतेरस से आरम्भ होता है। धनतेरस का त्यौहार प्रत्येक वर्ष कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी तिथि को मनाया जाता है। धनतेरस का वास्तविक नाम धन त्रयोदशी है। समुन्द्र मंथन में इसी दिन देवताओ के वैद्य कहे जाने वाले देव धन्वन्तरि प्रकट हुए थे। उनका प्रागट्य हाथ में सोने के कलश में अमृत लिए हुए था। इसलिए धनतेरस के दिन बर्तन या कोई वस्तु अथवा क्षमता के अनुसार सोने, चाँदी आदि मंहगे धातुओं को खरीदने की प्रथा है। इस दिन बर्तन, वस्तु (धन-समृद्धि का सूचक) व सोने – चाँदी खरीदना शुभ माना जाता है। धनतेरस में बर्तन, वस्तु व सोने चाँदी आदि के खरीदना माता लक्ष्मी के आगमन का सूचक होता है और यह बहुत शुभ होता है। चूँकि धनतेरस से ही माता लक्ष्मी के विशेष पूजन का मुहूर्त आरम्भ हो जाता है।

धनतेरस से अगले दिन व दिवाली से ठीक एक दिन पहले छोटी दिवाली मनाने की प्रथा है। हालांकि कुछ क्षेत्रो में यह दिवाली के अगले दिन मनाई जाती है, जहाँ सामान्य बोलचाल की भाषा में बासी दिवाली भी कहते है। चूँकि दिवाली से एक दिन पहले की तिथि को यम चतुर्दशी कहते है इसलिए उन स्थानों पर इस तिथि के रात्रि काल में स्त्रियां यम के नाम एक दीपक घर के बाहर जलाया करती है। वैसे छोटी दिवाली को नरक चतुर्दशी के नाम से जाना जाता है। इस दिन भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने सत्यभामा के साथ मिलकर भयानक दैत्य नरकासुर का वध किया था और उसके बंधन से सोलह हजार स्त्रियों को मुक्त करवाया था।

दिवाली के एक दिन पहले वाले इस तिथि को काली चौदस के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। क्योकि यह तिथि कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष के 14वें दिन को पड़ता है। इस तिथि को काली चौदस, नरक चौदस, यम चतुर्दशी और नरक चतुर्दशी के नामो से जाना जाता है। इसके बाद अगले दिन कार्तिक मास की अमावस्या प्रकाश का महापर्व दीपावली मनाई जाती है। पांच दिनों तक मनाये जाने वाले इस महापर्व का यह सबसे प्रमुख दिन होता है।

दिवाली के अगले दिन गोवर्धन पूजा होती है। गोवर्धन पूजा के अगले दिन भाई बहन के प्रेम को समर्पित पर्व भाई दूज मनाया जाता है। पांच दिनों तक मनाये जाने वाले इस महापर्व का पांचवां दिन भाई दूज या यम द्वितीया के रूप में मनाया जाता है। यह पर्व भाई बहन के प्रेम को समर्पित है। इस दिन बहनें अपने भाई के लम्बे आयु के लिए पूजन करती है और ईश्वर से उसके लिए प्रार्थना करती है। भाई दूज के साथ ही पांच दिनों तक मनाये जाने इस महापर्व दिवाली का समापन होता है।
