Today there are many online shopping sites such as Amazon, Flipkart, and many other shopping marts such as D-mart are in the country, but people still love to buy well in the weekly markets. Every village has it’s own unique market where they are very well organized. The markets are usually named after the day on which it’s going to hold, such as the Tuesday market, Sunday market, etc. In these markets, you will find all shops for daily needs items such as clothes, utensils, etc. These markets are held on a particular day of the week, and it starts at 4 pm and ends at 10 pm. The people from the neighboring areas and some people come from long distances to come to buy the necessary things for a week and come again next week on the same day at the same time. 

These markets are not only held in villages, towns but also in big cities too. The products in these markets are very cheaper, so it will help the weaker section and the middle class. Most of the shop owners are sold at their home. The employee is their family members to run this shop. They don’t hire anyone outside of the family members. In these markets, the customers have an option to choose the shop due to this. The seller reduces the price of the product to attract more customers. 

These markets are held from centurions, and people buy the goods which are sufficient for one week so to reducing the go-to shop on a regular day. In this weekly market, people buy bakery items, so the shop keepers keep freshly baked cakes, biscuits, cream rolls, and pastries. Vegetables and fruits vendor has a more significant portion in these markets. These market shop vendors also sell jewelry and imitating jewelry. This shop has a large crowd in front of these shops.

The Weekly market is held on a particular day and for a limited time every week. These markets are generally held at 4 pm and end it in late evenings. The place where the market is held is left and cleaned by midnight. In the morning you don’t find any evidence that there was a market at this place yesterday. These markets are very much awaited by the people. Some people started making a list of items as the day nearby. In this market, the shops of utensils, clothing, vegetables, fruits, footwear, and furniture. The people only find fresh vegetables and fruits in the weekly markets. The market is essential for both shop owners and customers because the people will get the best product, and the shop owners get a better price for the product. The shop keeper is eagerly waiting for the market open. They sell every product until the stocks are over and again fill the stock for the next week. This never-ending process of shop owners and buyers. This market brings enjoyment to the place where it’s held. Shopkeeper selling jewels are generally artificial and affordable and they look great.

Almost every shop is same and there’s a lot of crowd at every shop.

There is almost every shop from groceries to clothes at affordable price. There are many hawkers standing on the roads too to sell some small items.

It’s a great business for those who are new in their business, and they spend short span of time to earn more money as people have to spend less money and time on these goods.

Some of the disadvantages of these markets are

• They create traffic jams across the roads.
• Some beautiful products are lying on the ground
• They don’t use scales or measurement tapes to measure a cloth.
• Cleanliness is not at all care of.

These shops are temporary (for a day). Snack shops are mostly crowded specially by ladies and children.

• Tricks to bargain should be good enough.

Hawkers there shout loudly to sell their product .They try to sell their goods in a musical ways like by singing songs or pronouncing unique words or several names.

They also face many competitors to sell the good as there are many hawkers around selling same goods.

These are crowded place so there is no use to take vehicles inside the market, they only create more fuss. So better to walk and then buy goods.

On occasions like Diwali, Holi, Dusshera these places become more and more crowded. The shopkeepers sell their goods in bulk that is benefitted for both shopkeepers and customers.

Some hawkers don’t have carts to sell their good; they use their vehicles to sell specially clothes which could make situation worse in market.

These markets are only possible in India, these markets are not like western markets i.e. Sophisticated, patience, high amount of money to spend .These market shows the Indian culture too.

The crowded scene is very interesting to watch. All shop in the ground in a circle shape and the public is between them to buy different things.

These colourful shop are the centre of attraction for buyers as well as sellers. The market at my places is very crowded. Hawkers sell snacks like namkeen, biscuits.

They also sell fresh breads, cupcakes which are very tasty to eat for an evening or morning snack.

They clean the area after the market and before the market so to make area environment friendly.

We all always like to visit these kinds of markets to give a pleasant feeling. There are so many wonderful colours one can see in these types of places.

One can cheaply buy goods from this market and create an experience to tackle the small problems with ease.

A market place is a very busy place where people go to buy articles of their needs. It is a centre of attraction for both buyers and sellers. There is no other place in the area having so much brisk business as the market.

I always find a big crowd there. There are several shops, all decorated beautifully. Big shops look more attractive. Businessmen come here from far and wide for purchasing or selling their products. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, vegetables, etc.

Whenever I visit a market I find the hawkers shouting loudly to sell their goods. They try to attract the people by several names. Generally they sing songs in praise of their goods. They face hard competition because there are several hawkers selling the same article.

As the prices of the items are not fixed, the hawkers as well as the buyers do bargain. I watch these people who feel greatly satisfied after purchasing a thing at a minimum price from the hawkers.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The market is at peak in the evening. There is not a single shop where a big crowd is not seen. Everyone seems to be in hurry. There are jewellery shops which shine brightly in the light. Cloth shops and ready-made garment shops do great business during a festival.

The hotels and restaurants are also crowded with people. Some people are seen with plates of ‘chat’ others are seen enjoying cold drinks. There is flavour of all kinds in the surrounding area. It is very difficult to drive a car in a market place.

What to talk of a car or a motorcycle sometimes it becomes difficult even to walk. On the occasion of festivals like Diwali, Dussehra and Holi the situation becomes worse. It seems all the population of the country is on the road. There is great hustle and bustle. In between the cars and motorcycles, we see those carrying different articles for sale. They create great problems as sometimes they bring the traffic at a halt resulting in loud horns from the car-drivers.

The market is really a very noisy place. One can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another and enjoy fast foods. Some people are seen discussing politics in the light of their business.

Our markets are quite different from the markets of the western advanced countries. Our markets present a rural glimpse and fill us with a feeling that we belong to India whose soul lies in villages. It is really very pleasant to move in a market, particularly in the evening.

I always welcome those moments when I visit the market for this purpose or that. It is a place where one can see the life in so many colours. One can get valuable experiences too by visiting market and buying different commodities.

The market itself is in the centre of the town. All important bazaars of the town lead to this market. It has square shape. There is an open ground in the middle of the shops. There are shops on the four sides of the big square. The main shopkeepers are regents. Their trade is chiefly export and import of grains. There are a few shops which meet needs of the  people  who visit the market for purchase.

The crowd scene in the market is very interesting. It is a centre of attraction for both buyers and sellers. I always find a big crowd there. Businessmen come from far and wide. They transact business. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, gur and vegetables. These things are arranged in an attractive manner for sale.

The merchants make  their purchases moving in groups. They bid in  a particular fashion. They do some indications udder the clothes to fix the rates of the commodities brought in the market for sale. The purchase of commodities  take place in the day. In the evening all commodities are packed in jute bags. They are sent back to places where they are in demand. The country carts, horses and donkeys go back with their masters to the villages. Nearly all the shops have telephones. The shopkeepers get news about the rates of markets through post and telephone. 

The market of my town is a very noisy place. Pretty hawkers with namkins of various kinds go about the market. They sell their articles by shouting their names at the top of their voice. Once can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another. People discuss politics in the light of their business.

The market of my town is different from old markets. It is not dirty. It is swept and cleaned every day. There is no mud and bad smell. In the centre of the market there is a well. A trough is made near it. The animals drinks water at the trough. There is public bath for the labourers. In short our town market is worth a visit.

But green vegetables are brought early in the morning. The smooth and efficient working of the market is really appreciable. 

This market is in a huge concrete building. The stalls are arranged in beautiful rows, they are also classified according to the goods they deal with. Fruits, vegetables, fish, fowls and meat; all have their respective dealers. Buyers and sellers haggle and haggle over prices. They push and jostle to get the best offer.

The market is under city authorities. So health inspectors are responsible for its cleanliness. They have to see that the foodstuffs that are sold are free from defects. Thus unscrupulous stall keepers and vendors are warned against selling rotten, unpalatable or poisonous food stuff.

Weekly markets are a common sight in most cities and towns of the country. They are usually held once a week and are mostly located on the outskirts of cities and towns. Farmers of the nearby villages bring their produce to sell in these markets. Thus one can find health care and cosmetics items products, selling side by side with agricultural products and farm produce, brought by peasants from the surrounding villages. This provides a good occasion for the people to savour the good thing of the town as well as villages. Thus it provides an excellent opportunity for people of the town and villages, to partake in the exchange process.

Last Sunday, I along with my father went to the weekly market in Chinhat, which is close to my home. The market is located near the highway which connects Lucknow to Faizabad. Parking the car on the pavement, we proceeded towards the market, which was bustling with people. On either side of the road there were makeshift shops displaying wares, ranging from toys to clothes, ready-made garments and cosmetics. Shopkeepers were hawking their wares loudly, often screaming on top of their voice to attract customers. Women and children crowded around these shops selecting the items of their choice.

I made my way towards the food grain market with great difficulty. It was more crowded, as people tugged along with their cycles and scooters. An occasional tractor trolley bringing produce from the nearby villages would add to the confusion. Finally reaching the market I found huge stockpiles of food grain of different variety on either side of the road. The farmers were hawking their produce quoting reasonable prices, which were being eagerly lapped up by the buyers. Others were busy selecting and comparing the produce, so as to strike a good bargain. My father too got busy and soon after making the purchase, we decided to return. This was not easy, after a bit of jostling and pushing we finally reached the main road.

A small fair was in progress on the other side of the highway. Children were having the time of their life, on the merry go rounds or on the swings, while their parents were away shopping. The balloon man, the juggler and the snake charmer, had an appreciative audience, who seemed to thoroughly enj oy their performance. There was much merrymaking and laughter, which gives the market the semblance of a fair.

A little away was a vegetable and fish market. It was the dirtiest, and the most congested part of the market. Here the pungent aroma of fish and rotten vegetables was quite nauseating. However, farm fresh vegetables attract buyers, who usually purchase in bulk. The high pitch sales talk, the price haggling, shouts and arguments, justifiably made it the‘fish market’.

I like the weekly markets, because they provide a very healthy interaction between the urban and the rural folks. They give the rural folks an opportunity to sell their produce directly to the customers, thereby improving their economic lot. The customers are also benefited by getting farm fresh products at fair prices. What I dislike is the unhygienic surroundings, which pose serious health hazards and traffic congestion. These pose serious inconveniences and dissuades city folks from visiting such markets.

A Visit to the Market

I love going to market, so yesterday when my mother told me to get her some eggs and other groceries, I obeyed gladly. Picking up a bag and some money, I cycled down to the nearest market. It was modest in size but catered to the daily needs of the people living close by.

As usual, there was a lot of activity going on in the shops, and the hawkers seemed to be doing good business too. I bought some chilli powder and a tin of cooking oil from the grocery store, then went to the chemist’s shop to buy my father’s medicine.

Thinking that I would leave the purchase of eggs for the end, I walked into the sweet-seller’s shop where a wonderful, rich aroma assailed my nostrils. I could not resist buying some hot jalebis which I devoured greedily. Then, wiping my sticky hands on my skirt, I went to the dairy shop and bought a packet of milk and a dozen eggs. Putting them carefully in my bag I came out to find that a man had settled down on the ground with his wares displayed on a sheet. He begged me earnestly to buy something from his colourful assortment of handkerchiefs, ribbons, soap-dishes and packets of safety-pins. I admired his goods but said I would come another day.

Picking up my bicycle from the end of the road, where I had parked it along with a whole lot of others, I hung my shopping bag over the handle and cycled home. I returned the left-over change to my mother, who jokingly remarked that since I had eaten jalebis my stomach must be full, so she needn’t cook any dinner for me.

शहरों में कुछ जगहों पर साप्ताहिक बाजार भी लगते है। स्थायी बाजार शाम तक खुले रहते है।  दैनिक जीवन में जैसे ही घर का सामान समाप्त होने लगता है तो लोगो को एक ही जगह की याद आती है , वह है बाजार।  शहरों और महानगरों के बाजार बहुत बड़े होते है।  वह की सजावट बहुत सुन्दर होती है।  गाँव के बाजार अस्थायी होते है और इतनी रौनक नहीं होती। बाज़ारो में ग्राहकों और व्यापारियों की भीड़ लगी रहती है।

बाजार के दुकानों में स्टेशनरी वस्तुएं , चूड़ियां , गहने , कपड़े इत्यादि बिकते है। यहां इलेक्ट्रॉनिक सामान जैसे मोबाइल , फ्रिज , घड़ी,  रेडियो बाज़ारो में आसानी से मिल जाते है। बच्चो की पढ़ाई लिखाई से जुड़े किताबे , खिलौने इत्यादि सब बाज़ारो में मिल जाते है। खाद्य वस्तुएं जैसे मिठाई , चटपटी वस्तुएं , चॉकलेट से लेकर कोल्ड ड्रिंक इत्यादि चीज़ें बाज़ारो में मौजूद रहती है।

बाज़ारो में अनगिनत दुकाने होते है। वहाँ हम अपने मन पसंद की वस्तुएं खरीद सकते है।  अगर एक दुकान से कोई चीज़ ना पसंद आये तो दूसरे दुकान पर जाकर खरीद सकते है। कपड़े , जूते , गहनों  के बीस तीस दुकाने  रहते है। बाज़ारो में भोजन करने के लिए भी कई छोटे बड़े रेस्टोरेंट उपलब्ध रहते है। बाज़ारो में ऐसी चीज़ें अधिक होती है जो घरेलू महिला के काम में आये।

बाज़ारो में अक्सर व्यापारी आकर अपनी दुकान लगा लेते है। कुछ ही देर में ग्राहक अपनी ज़रूरत के अनुसार दुकान पर चले जाते है और  वस्तुएं खरीदते है । हर दिन ग्राहकों को अपने ज़रूरत के मुताबिक बाजार आना ही पड़ता है।  कई दुकानों पर ग्राहकों को चीज़ो को खरीदने के  लिए तोल मोल करना पड़ता है।

कई बार ग्राहकों को आभास हो जाता है कि दुकानदार जान बुझ कर अधिक दाम बता रहा है।  ऐसे में ग्राहक वस्तुओं का दाम लगाते है। अक्सर घर की महिलाओं को चीज़ो की अच्छी परख होती है।  थोक बाजार भी एक तरीके का अच्छा व्यापार है। इस प्रकार के बाजार में एक तरह की चीज़ अधिक मात्रा में खरीद  सकते  है। इससे ग्राहकों को फायदा होता है और सस्ते दाम में चीज़ें मिल जाती है।ग्राहकों की मांग पर वस्तुओं की कीमतें घटती या बढ़ती है।

अगर ग्राहकों की किसी भी वस्तु को लेकर मांग में वृद्धि हुयी , तो कीमतों में वृद्धि होती है।  जैसे ही बाजार में उसकी  मांग कम हो गयी, कीमतों में गिरावट  आ गयी।  महानगरों में बाजार बहुत विशाल और भव्य होते है। महानगरों में  शॉपिंग मॉल होते है जहां विभिन्न ब्रांड की चीज़ें मिलती है। शॉपिंग मॉल बहुत विशाल होते है और यहां कई सुविधाएं मौजूद होती है।  एक ही जगह में लोग में खरीदारी कर सकते है और फिल्में भी देख सकते है।शॉपिंग मॉल में मशहूर और लोकप्रिय रेस्टोरेंट में मौजूद है जहां लोग अपना मन पसंद भोजन कर सकते है।

शॉपिंग मॉल में कई तरह के विकल्प होते है और यहां के उत्पाद भी बढ़िया होते है।  आजकल लोग इतने व्यस्त हो गए है कि लोगो को शॉपिंग मॉल से खरीदारी करने में सुविधा मिलती है।  यहां आप कोई भी वस्तु का मोल भाव नहीं कर सकते है।  यहां वस्तु पर जो दाम लिखा रहता है ग्राहक वही दाम चुकाना पड़ता  है। मशहूर और नामचीन ब्रांड अपने वस्तुएं शॉपिंग मॉल में बेचती है। भारत में तकरीबन बड़े बड़े शहरों में बड़े बड़े मॉल जहां बाजार से लेकर कई और दिलचस्प सुविधाएं मौजूद है।

NPR employees tuned in for a pivotal meeting late last year for a long-awaited update on the future of the public radio network.

After many tumultuous months, marked by layoffs, financial turbulence and internal strife, they signed in to Zoom hoping to hear some good news from NPR’s leaders. What they got instead was a stark preview of the continued challenges ahead.

“We are slipping in our ability to impact America, not just in broadcast, but also in the growing world of on-demand audio,” Daphne Kwon, NPR’s chief financial officer, told the group, according to a recording of the meeting obtained by The New York Times.

For the past two weeks, turmoil has engulfed NPR after a senior editor assailed what he described as an extreme liberal bias inside the organization that has bled into its news coverage. The editor, Uri Berliner, said NPR’s leaders had placed race and identity as “paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace” — at the expense of diverse political viewpoints, and at the risk of losing its audience.

The accusations, leveled in an essay published in an online publication, The Free Press, led to a deluge of criticism from conservatives, including former President Donald J. Trump, who called for the network’s public funding to be pulled. The essay also generated vociferous pushback internally, with many journalists defending their work and saying Mr. Berliner’s essay distorted basic facts about NPR’s coverage.

But NPR’s troubles extend far beyond concerns about its journalism. Internal documents reviewed by The Times and interviews with more than two dozen current and former public radio executives show how profoundly the nonprofit is struggling to succeed in the fast-changing media industry. It is grappling with a declining audience and falling revenue — and internal conflict about how to fix it.

NPR’s traditional broadcast audience, still the bulk of its listenership, is in long-term decline that accelerated when the pandemic interrupted long car commutes for millions of people. The network has begun to sign up digital subscribers who pay for ad-free podcasts, but that business has lagged far behind that of its competitors.

While NPR still has an audience of about 42 million who listen every week, many of them digitally, that is down from an estimated 60 million in 2020, according to an internal March audience report, a faster falloff than for broadcast radio, which is also in a long-term decline.

A yearslong push to diversify NPR’s staff, in part to lure listeners beyond its aging and predominantly white audience, hasn’t generated the listenership boost some executives had hoped for. But the effort, which NPR’s former chief executive called its “North Star,” had been a point of contention within the organization long before Mr. Berliner published his essay this month.

Making matters more complicated: NPR’s unusual leadership structure. NPR’s reach is the result of its hundreds of member stations around the country, many of which both pay NPR for its shows and produce their own. But the leaders of those member stations — who control NPR’s board — often have conflicting priorities and compete with the network for donors, making changes more difficult.

Together, the challenges raise questions about the long-term vitality of NPR, one of the country’s most storied and far-reaching media organizations. More than 98 percent of the U.S. population lives within listening range of at least one of the more than 1,000 public radio stations that carry NPR programming, including longtime staples like “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered.” Legions of die-hard listeners proudly carry tote bags emblazoned with the nonprofit’s three signature letters.

“I believe that public radio has five to seven years to reimagine itself before it’s simply unsustainable,” said Eric Nuzum, a former NPR executive and co-founder of the audio consulting and production company Magnificent Noise. “And they can’t take two or three years of that time debating a business model.”

An NPR spokeswoman, Isabel Lara, said in emails to The Times that the organization had confidence in many of its recent initiatives, including its podcast subscription business, its push to diversify its staff and its efforts to reach listeners digitally. Ms. Lara said three of NPR’s podcasts — “Up First,” “Fresh Air” and “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” — were in Apple’s top 10 subscriber podcasts.

“Our focus on the North Star has led to increased diversity in our content: the voices on the air, the sources our journalists go to, the broader range of topics and issues discussed in our shows,” Ms. Lara said. “We want to reach people where they are.”

The organization is now led by Katherine Maher, who started as NPR’s chief executive last month after leading the Wikimedia Foundation, which supports the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Ms. Maher had no professional experience in the news industry. In a January news release announcing her hire, NPR’s board said Ms. Maher would help the network “reach audiences on new and existing platforms.”

Ms. Maher was criticized this month for social media posts she published before joining NPR, including one from 2018 that called Mr. Trump a racist and expressed support for numerous progressive causes, including Black Lives Matter. NPR has said that she wrote those posts as a private citizen expressing her free speech rights, and that she oversees the organization’s business, not its editorial product.

In a statement, Ms. Maher said NPR was not alone in facing a challenging media environment and pledged to use its distinctions to its advantage.

“Its differences — as a broadcaster, a nonprofit, a federated network — serve both as unique challenges and remarkable differentiators,” Ms. Maher said. “The obstacles we face are real, but the quality of the programming and the integrity of the mission are also indisputable. They offer a strong basis from which to build our future.”

First Expansion, Then Declines

NPR sprang up in Washington in 1970 as an alternative to commercial media, less than three years after former President Lyndon Johnson signed a bill that created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a taxpayer-funded organization that partly funds both a nonprofit radio network, NPR, and a nonprofit TV network, PBS.

The founding documents of NPR stipulated that its board of directors would include many representatives from member stations, along with the general public. The goal was to ensure that the board always had the best interests of its local stations at heart.

A network of 88 charter stations banded together to bring listeners across the United States stories including the Senate hearings on the Vietnam War. NPR began making “newsmagazines” for member stations — starting in 1971 with the first broadcast of “All Things Considered” — and received grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Before long, NPR exploded. By 1983, it had nearly 300 stations and about eight million listeners. Today, more than 1,000 people work at NPR, and its audience of millions makes it one of the most influential media companies in the world.

But that growth has reversed course in recent years.

“News fatigue, digital transformation and increased competition continue to drive audience declines across platforms,” the report said.

Conflicting Priorities

To some degree, those recent declines have been balanced out by the emergence of a relative bright spot: the rise of podcasting.

Public radio podcasts, with their distinct blend of reporting and narrative, quickly won over millions of listeners and pioneered a new format. “Serial,” a gritty whodunit from the makers of the public radio show “This American Life,” became a breakout hit, leading to spinoffs and illustrating the promise of podcasting for nonprofit radio organizations.

Today, NPR is the fourth most popular podcast publisher globally, according to Podtrac, with nearly 113 million downloads in March alone. But it also faces many new competitors, including The Times, which bought “Serial” in 2020 to bolster its own growing audio business.

Corporate sponsorships — public radio speak for advertisements — grew nearly 70 percent in the five years before 2022, according to filings from NPR, generating more than $135 million that year. The vast majority of that growth comes from podcasting, which allows NPR to tap into a younger and expanding audience.

But that business took a major hit last year in an uncertain advertising market. In 2023, NPR generated $101 million in corporate sponsorship revenue, a decrease of about 25 percent from the previous year.

The growth of NPR’s podcast business has also led to tension with its member stations. If local advertisers can reach public radio listeners directly through a podcast, why would they pay for a sponsorship on a member station? In 2022, a group of executives at member stations sent a letter to NPR’s chief executive at the time, John Lansing, expressing concern that the organization’s growing portfolio had “caused distress on local stations’ sponsorship revenue.”

“If unaddressed, it will continue to impact the health of stations in an increasing way,” said the letter, which was signed by executives at many of the biggest NPR stations.

Adoption of NPR’s podcast subscription bundle, NPR+, has also lagged behind competitors’ subscription businesses. According to internal documents obtained by The Times, about 51,000 people subscribed to NPR+ as of early March, and the product has generated about $1.7 million in revenue since it was introduced in November 2022. Users can pay $8 monthly for a bundle of podcast extras or subscribe to individual shows for $2.99 per month.

In late 2022, NPR began selling fewer sponsorships, part of an overall downturn in the ad market. So, for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Lansing and his team planned for NPR’s revenue to remain flat in 2023. He wasn’t prepared for what happened next. When January arrived, the “bottom just fell out” of the digital ad market, he said in an interview. Sponsorships fell $34 million compared with the previous year.

“That’s 10 percent of our revenue, and you can’t go back and get it,” Mr. Lansing said. “It’s like an airplane that takes off with half the seats sold — once it’s gone, it’s gone. ”

The scope of the shortfall became apparent early in 2023, when NPR’s leadership decided to cut about 100 positions to help make up for a $30 million budget deficit.

An Uncertain Future

In May 2022, the board met to discuss taking a big step: an ambitious membership effort that it hoped would be a big part of NPR’s future.

The nonprofit was planning to create the NPR Network, a service that would allow listeners across the United States to donate directly to NPR. In doing so, the board was wading into an issue that had generated tensions between NPR and its member stations for decades: fund-raising.

For years, NPR’s rules restricted the ways it could ask listeners for money directly. Those solicitations were supposed to be done with participation from local member stations.

Now, the board planned to suspend that rule so that NPR could ask avid public radio listeners to donate directly to the NPR Network.

There was some initial disagreement on the board over the NPR Network, according to people familiar with the meeting. Some of the directors said NPR needed to do a better job of reaching listeners directly. Others urged caution, warning that the proposal could interfere with fund-raising efforts at local stations.

After much back and forth, the board held a special session in June for a formal vote on whether to remove the rule. Ultimately, the board voted to suspend the rule, but agreed to revisit the decision in the coming years, setting up yet another debate.

‘The North Star’

Like many companies that committed themselves to confronting racial inequality in recent years, NPR put an ambitious action plan in place. Its commitment to diversity — which Mr. Lansing called NPR’s “North Star” — would be not only a moral imperative but a foundation of its business strategy.

NPR’s leaders redoubled their efforts to diversify their audience and work force and closely tracked metrics for each. They added podcasts aimed at people of color and younger listeners. They promoted people of color to high-profile reporting and hosting jobs. All of these moves were meant to ensure the nation’s public radio network would remain competitive as the country’s population continued to grow more diverse.

So it came as a disappointment to some people on NPR’s board last fall when they were presented with new internal data showing their efforts hadn’t moved the needle much with Black and Hispanic podcast listeners.

Black listeners made up roughly 11 percent of NPR’s audience in the second quarter of 2023, unchanged from the same period in 2020, according to the data. The data further showed that the share of Hispanic listeners went up only two percentage points since 2020, to account for 16 percent of the total audience. One 2020 survey , from the Pew Research Center, found that of the people who named NPR as their main source for political and election news, 75 percent were white, more than any other outlet except Fox News.

NPR’s efforts to diversify itself and its audience didn’t always live up to the expectations of the people who worked there. During a round of layoffs last year, NPR cut “Louder Than a Riot,” a hip-hop podcast that examined Black and queer issues. After that decision, the show’s editor, Soraya Shockley, who had previously worked at The Times, grilled Mr. Lansing during an employee question-and-answer session about why the show had no dedicated budget, pointing out the lack of resources supporting content that furthered diversity, equity and inclusion, or D.E.I.

“How are we supposed to support diverse programming — actually commit to D.E.I., and make it not a folly — when this company seems scared to talk about money when it is not a $30 million deficit?” Shockley asked. In a statement, NPR said the second season of “Louder Than a Riot” had comparable marketing support to other podcasts at the network; Shockley said they were never shown a marketing budget.

Later on the call, after Mr. Lansing urged employees to be more mindful of “civility” in their questions, an NPR employee wrote in an instant-messaging chat accompanying the conversation that the word “civility” is often used as a cudgel against people of color, calling the language choice “racist.”

After the meeting, Shockley filed a human resources complaint against Mr. Lansing, saying his remarks about civility amounted to “dog-whistle racism,” according to a person with knowledge of the exchange. The complaint against Mr. Lansing was referred to an outside law firm, which did not recommend any punitive action.

Mr. Lansing, who announced his retirement last fall, declined to comment on the interaction.

Still, some critics of NPR believe NPR’s “North Star” strategy has failed for a completely different reason: It has not taken ideological diversity into account. Tim Eby, who was the general manager of St. Louis Public Radio until 2020, said in an interview that while it made sense for NPR to seek an audience that looked more like the country, he wasn’t sure its approach was the right one. And its story selection has on occasion left it open to criticism that its focus on race and identity has affected its news judgment. There have been stories, for instance, on how to “ decolonize your bookshelf ” and “ thin privilege .”

“The demographics of the country being what they are, it goes without saying that if you want to have a sustainable business going forward, you have to reach new audiences,” he said. “I think the question is how you’re doing that. I think they’ve overcompensated on attempts to reach audiences that are not going to listen,” he added.

(Mr. Eby has a personal stake in the debate. An anonymous post on the Medium website accused him of presiding over a workplace that was unfair to employees of minority groups. The station replaced him. He has denied those claims and is suing for defamation.)

Mr. Berliner’s criticism this month of NPR’s North Star strategy hasn’t swayed the network’s leaders. In a statement, NPR said it was committed to a more diverse staff and on-air voices. The network pointed to its large audiences on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube as bright spots.

Many employees also pushed back against the claims in Mr. Berliner’s essay, both in public and internally. The staff of “Morning Edition” set aside more than a half-hour of one daily meeting to discuss his remarks.

Bill Siemering, an early leader at NPR who wrote a statement of purposes in 1970 that the nonprofit continues to use, said in an interview that NPR’s mission was as important today as when he first put pen to paper.

“There’s a place in society for a independent source of information that reflects the culture in a meaningful way where all the voices are heard, and where there is intentional programming to help solve some of the most critical problems facing America,” Mr. Siemering said.

Stock market today: Alphabet and Microsoft help Wall Street clinch its best week in nearly 6 months

NEW YORK (AP) — The best week for U.S. stocks since November closed out with more gains thanks to Alphabet and Microsoft on Friday.

The S&P 500 rallied 1% to finish its first winning week in the last four. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 153 points, or 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 2%.

Alphabet leaped 10.2% after breezing past analysts’ expectations for profit last quarter. The parent company of Google also said it will start paying a dividend to investors and authorized a program to buy back up to $70 billion of its stock, a signal of how much cash it’s generating.

Microsoft, meanwhile, climbed 1.8% after reporting stronger profit and revenue than expected. It cited strong growth in its cloud-computing business as it pushes artificial-intelligence technology to its customers.

They helped offset a 9.2% drop for Intel. It reported stronger profit for the latest quarter than expected, but its revenue fell short of analysts’ estimates. So did its forecast for profit in the current quarter.

Stocks have broadly been under pressure this month after hopes withered for multiple cuts to interest rates this year by the Federal Reserve. A series of reports this year showing inflation remaining worse than forecast has traders expecting maybe one cut this year, down from forecasts for six or more at the start of the year.

Yet another report on Friday showed inflation remaining stubbornly high. This time it was the measure of prices for March that the Federal Reserve prefers to use, but it wasn’t much worse than forecasts. Financial markets took it much more in stride than a report from the day before that suggested the same measure of inflation rose quickly from January through March.

Treasury yields largely eased in the bond market following Friday morning’s report. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.66% from 4.71% late Thursday. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for the Fed, held steadier. It edged down to 4.99% from 5.00%.

While inflation has remained hotter than forecast, EY Chief Economist Gregory Daco expects it to cool in coming months as shoppers pressured in part by slowing growth in wages tamp down their purchases, which is the fuel that gives inflation energy.

“Consumers remain willing to spend, but not on anything, nor at any price,” he said.

Economists also said the weaker-than-expected reading on the overall U.S. economy from Thursday, which helped send stocks sliding, may not be as bad as it seemed on the surface.

“The economy remains on solid footing,” Bank of America economists said in a report, pointing to solid buying trends from U.S. customers. Such an interpretation calms worries that the U.S. economy could be heading for a toxic mix of stagnating growth and high inflation, something that the Federal Reserve doesn’t have great tools to fix.

Still, the higher-than-expected inflation readings will likely keep the Fed on hold at its next policy meeting on Wednesday. Its main interest rate has been sitting at the highest level since 2001 in hopes of undercutting inflation by putting downward pressure on the economy and financial markets.

After earlier indicating that three cuts to interest rates could be on the way this year, top Fed officials have since said they could hold its main interest rate high for a while to ensure inflation heads down toward their 2% target.

Friday’s report on sticky inflation “underscores Vanguard’s belief that the Federal Reserve may find it’s unable to cut interest rates this year,” according to the investment giant’s global head of portfolio construction, Roger Aliaga-Diaz.

If interest rates stay high, companies will need to produce stronger profits for their stock prices to rise. So far this reporting season, the trend has been better than expected.

Roughly three out of four companies have been topping analysts’ forecasts for profit, according to FactSet. That includes ResMed, which reported healthier profit and revenue than expected late Thursday. Its stock jumped 18.9% for Friday’s biggest gain in the S&P 500.

All told, the S&P 500 rose 51.54 points to 5,099.96. The Dow added 153.86 to 38,239.66, and the Nasdaq gained 316.14 to 15,927.90.

In stock markets abroad, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.8% after the Bank of Japan ended a policy meeting with no major changes to interest rates. Indexes also rose across much of the rest of Asia and Europe.
