Learn more about the federal hiring process.

Below is an overview of the federal hiring process. This process is in place to make sure all applicants receive fair and equal opportunity.

Create a USAJOBS profile

First, create and complete your profile to apply for any job on USAJOBS.

With a USAJOBS profile, you can save jobs, automate job searches, and manage everything you need to complete your application, including resumes and required documents.

Search for jobs

Once you create your profile, you can search for jobs.

It's best to sign into your profile before searching. Why? We can use your information to improve your job search results.

You can also use filters such as location, salary, work schedule or agency to narrow your results.

Review the job announcement

If you find a job you're interested in, read the entire announcement to determine if you're eligible and meet the qualifications. It's important to read the announcement because there are required qualifications you must meet and include in your application.

Prepare your application in USAJOBS

Read the How to Apply section of the job announcement before starting your application. Click Apply , and we'll walk you through a five-step process where you'll attach a resume and any required documents.

During the application process, you can review, edit and delete your information. We'll automatically save your progress as you go so that you won't lose any changes.

Submit application to the agency

When your application is ready, you'll be directed from USAJOBS to the hiring agency's system to submit your application. Before you submit, you may need to complete other agency-required steps such as a questionnaire or uploading additional documents.

The time it takes to submit depends on the job you are applying for and the hiring agency's requirements.

You can check your application using the Track This Application link in your USAJOBS profile or contact the hiring agency listed on the job announcement.

Transition to agency

Agency reviews application.

The hiring agency begins reviewing applications when the job announcement closes. The hiring agency will review your application to make sure you're eligible and meet the qualifications for the position.

The hiring agency will place applicants into quality categories. Those placed in the highest category are sent to the hiring official.

The hiring official will review the highest qualified applications and select applicants to interview based on agency policy. The hiring agency will contact applicants directly to schedule interviews.

You may be interviewed by a panel, in-person, video or phone interview, and there may be more than one interview round. For example, an applicant may have a phone interview and then an in-person interview.

Scheduling an interview may take some time, depending on the number of applicants to interview.

Agency selects candidates

After all interviews are completed, the agency will select a candidate(s) and contact them to start the job offer process.

For those not selected, the hiring agency will update the job's status to Hiring Complete .

What jobs can you apply for?

Hiring paths help you understand what jobs you are eligible to apply for and why. You may fall under multiple hiring paths.

Pathways to a Federal Government Career: USAJobs, Fellowships, Paid Internships, & More

Pathways to a Federal Government Career

Also check out our guide to kick-starting a career in state and local government .

As the nation’s largest employer, the U.S. federal government offers plenty of career opportunities for graduates who are looking for careers outside of academia. With employees working in 400 occupational specialties across 120 different agencies and bureaus , the federal government actively recruits master’s and doctoral students and graduates from all academic disciplines.

Please note : The majority of federal government jobs are open only to U.S. citizens or those actively pursuing U.S. citizenship .

The First Step: USAJobs

USAJOBS_Home_Screen

The USAJobs site —where you can search and apply for most federal civil service openings—is probably the best place to start a general search for federal employment opportunities. There are only a handful of excepted federal service agencies that are not required to post on the site (more on jobs at these agencies below).

USAJobs advertises thousands of jobs at any given time, so narrow your search by entering your desired location and keywords related to your academic discipline and skills. History PhD Ryan Reft , for example, found a job on the site by experimenting with keywords ranging from “historian,” “education,” “military,” and “housing” to “analyst,” “writer,” and “editor.” (Reft now has what sounds to me like a dream job: he’s the 20th/21st Century Historian in the Library of Congress’ Manuscript Division.) For advice on how he successfully navigated the process, check out Reft’s excellent post over at the Tropics of Meta blog . Reft encourages interested applicants to visit the site regularly:

“You have to be prepared to visit the site regularly, apply often, and hone your CV to various positions but take it from me, it can be done.”

Application tips from an American Historical Association (AHA) panel on government jobs ( summarized by Colleen Flaherty at Inside Higher Ed ):

“Government job applicants with PhDs need to stress their strength in communications, ability to synthesize vast amounts of information into ‘useable’ knowledge, and decision-making skills in the initial applications processes —much of which are online, administered by generalist human resources officials looking for key words and phrases.”

Improving your odds: Searching USAJobs is an incredibly useful way to gain a sense of the types of federal government jobs that are out there. As in many other fields, however, networking and “who you know” are frequently crucial to helping you secure a job within the federal government (for starters, it’s tough to get noticed amongst all the competition: there were more than 20 million applications submitted to USAJobs in 2014, reports the nonprofit organization Partnership for Public Service ).

Federal Pathways Programs

pathways

If you’ve spent the past few years immersed in academia, you likely don’t have a wide network of contacts within the federal bureaucracy. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sponsors three Pathways programs —the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) , the Recent Graduates Program , and federal Internship Program —to help students and recent graduates gain a foot in the door.

The Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF)

government jobs after phd in management

Presidential Management Fellows receive prestigious two-year appointments that include 160 hours of training and at least one 4 to 6 month assignment at a federal agency (with the possibility of rotations at additional agencies as well). Appointments can potentially be converted into permanent positions after the fellow successfully completes the program.

Eligibility: Graduate students from any discipline expected to complete a degree during the current academic year, or who have received a degree no more than 2 years prior to the opening date of the application window, are eligible to apply. Since 2014, the program has expanded to include additional opportunities for graduates in the STEM fields.

Application deadline: Fall (typically early October; check the PMF website and USAJobs for updates)

More details: To find more information and to apply to be a PMF, visit www.pmf.gov .

The Recent Graduates Program

The OPM’s Recent Graduates Program places successful applicants in a federal agency for one year, providing them with training, professional development, and mentorship opportunities. Appointments may be converted into permanent positions after participants complete the program.

Eligibility: Recent graduates who have completed their degree within the previous two years are eligible to apply. Veterans who serve in the military during the two years after their graduation have four additional years to apply. Note that students from vocational, technical, undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs are eligible, so qualifications vary.

graduate-grad-usa-flag

Application deadline: Varies by position.

More details: Find information about the program on the OPM website . To find open positions, visit USAJOBS and filter by the “recent graduates” appointment type.

Internships Program

Internships are another way to build the connections and experience that can help you land a permanent position. OPM’s Internship Program provides students with training and temporary positions at federal agencies.

Eligibility: Positions are open to current students who are enrolled at least half-time.

More details: Find information about the program on the OPM website . To find open positions, visit USAJobs and filter by the “internships” appointment type.

Opportunities within Excepted Agencies

Federal Agencies

The following is far from exhaustive, but here are a few professional development opportunities offered by excepted agencies:

The U.S. Army

The Army sponsors a number of post-doctoral research programs in the sciences and technology, and they’re open to both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens. To hear how one recent GC alum is currently building a career as an analyst at the U.S. Army Research Lab, check out our alumni profile interview with Taylor Cassidy (Linguistics PhD, 2014).

The Central Intelligence Agency

The CIA runs its own scholarship and internship programs for graduate students , with opportunities for students and graduates from a range of academic disciplines. If you have lots of teaching experience at CUNY under your belt, for example, you could become an Education and Training Specialist . Other internship programs seek applicants with backgrounds in computer science, data science, information management, and more. You can browse post-graduate positions by category on the CIA’s website .

Capitol Hill

If you’re looking to work on the Hill rather than within a federal agency, check out the “Ultimate Capitol Hill Internship Guide” from Roll Call . Note that, unfortunately, many Congressional internships are unpaid .

The U.S. Department of State

CUNY has the advantage of hosting the State Department’s Diplomat in Residence (DIR) for all of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut. DIRs are tasked with providing guidance and advice about State Department careers. You can email the NY Metro DIR or follow them on Facebook to learn about upcoming career events.

A few notes about employment opportunities with the State Department: The department runs its own Pathways Programs , internship and fellowship programs , and Recent Graduates Program , in addition to hosting Presidential Management Fellows . If you’re currently mid-career and have professional experience in addition to your degree, you might qualify for one of the department’s several professional fellowships . Applicants who hope to become foreign service officers should first take the Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT) .

The Federal Bureau of Investigation

The FBI’s Honors Internship Program is a 10-week, paid summer internship, and is open to graduate students in any discipline (past interns have ranged from Art Historians to Social Workers). The Visiting Scientist Program seeks STEM applicants who have an interest in forensic science and developing their laboratory skills.

The Federal Reserve Board

Opportunities include the Board’s Cooperative Education Program and dissertation fellowships .

Other Federal Programs

Future leaders in public service internship program.

The Partnership for Public Service manages the Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program , a summer internship at the Department of Commerce or Department of Transportation.

Eligibility: Positions are open to currently enrolled students interested in careers in public administration, STEM and innovation, government contracting and acquisition, and liberal arts-related areas. Students from across disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Application deadline: Generally in November.

More details: Find information about the program on the PPS website .

CyberSecurity Talent Initiative

The CyberSecurity Talent Initiative places students in two year positions in federal agencies with cybersecurity needs. Before the end of their term, program participants are invited to apply for employment with the Initiative’s private partners.

Eligibility: Positions are open to students in a cybersecurity-related field, such as computer science, engineering, information systems, or mathematics. Students must complete their degree before the start of the program.

Application deadline: Generally in early November.

7 Government Jobs for MPA Graduates

7 Government Jobs for MPA Graduates-image

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is a postgraduate degree that provides rigorous training to prepare you to serve in organizations working to make a difference.

Those organizations come in various kinds, from local to global, from nonprofits to federal agencies. On all levels, government agencies are some of the most important actors in the public sphere. Their actions and policies shape the daily lives of millions of people.

If you’re drawn to help improve the lives of others through public service, keep reading to find out how an MPA can equip you to do exactly that — along with the kinds of positions for which it can qualify you to serve.

Download Cornell University's MPA Career Report to explore a variety of MPA alumni who have pursued diverse careers in fields related to public administration!

What are the benefits of an MPA?

To truly make a positive difference, desire isn’t enough. There are many examples of government policies and private programs making matters worse, despite the good intentions of those who designed them. In addition to desire, you’ll need competence.

The world is complex. That’s why an MPA program takes an interdisciplinary approach to give you a solid understanding of several different areas, including economics, finance, management, and psychology. You’ll be equipped to take a broad view and identify solutions that work in the real world.

Your degree will also help to qualify you for more senior positions with greater potential impact ( as well as greater pay ).

Those who have been trained in an MPA program and go into public service usually work in some area related to public policy . This may be in a private organization, like a think tank or other nonprofit, or in government.

Wherever they serve, their work makes a significant impact on our daily lives through the policies they help to develop and deploy. There will always be a need for knowledgeable, ethical, and motivated public servants to help ensure that the impact is a positive one.

Earning your MPA will equip you to help fill this need. But what might your role actually look like? In the next section, we’ll profile seven government jobs you could fill as an MPA graduate.

7 government jobs for MPA graduates

An MPA degree equips you to work within any organization, public or private, concerned with promoting the public good. The government, though, is one of the most significant in terms of its reach and impact.

Here are some specific ways you can get involved:

1. Policy Analyst

These professionals are engaged in researching, formulating, and evaluating the effectiveness of policies within government agencies. They might work on existing policies or provide decision makers with data and forecasts about the effects of potential policies.

2. Policy Advisor

This is a similar role but in a different context. Members of Congress on both the national and state level rely upon policy advisors to provide them with carefully-researched data and analysis about existing and proposed policies so they can make informed decisions about legislation.

3. Program Analyst

While the first two positions are centered on the development and evaluation of policy, this role is focused on its implementation. The program analyst evaluates existing government programs, including matters like finances and effectiveness in achieving its goals, and makes recommendations for improvement.

4. Public Policy Manager

Often a state-level role, this person is responsible for overseeing both the formulation of public policy and its implementation, including coordinating government actions with non-governmental entities like businesses and nonprofits. This person may also be responsible for communicating with the public about policies and how they will be implemented.

5. Director of Economic Development

This is a more specific example of a public policy manager role. This person helps to create and deploy policy in this crucial area to strengthen the state or local economy. Such a role will likely include related goals, like increasing opportunities for economically depressed communities.

6. Community Health Director

Typically found at the level of a city or county, this person coordinates and oversees efforts to improve public health outcomes. This can include cooperation with many potential stakeholders, from local nonprofits to federal agencies.

7. City Manager

This person is the highest appointed official in a municipality and is responsible for its day-to-day administrative operations. The role usually involves preparing the city’s budget as well as offering policy advice to those tasked with enacting municipal laws and ordinances.

As you can see, the opportunities here are broad — so are the possible issues you might work on in these roles. They can include very practical matters like transportation as well as issues like public health and economic policy that can touch our lives in profound ways.

Serving well in these kinds of positions means helping to ensure the policies that shape our society contribute to the greater good of the whole community. It is truly vital work.

Getting an MPA at Cornell University — here’s what makes us different

If you’re exploring MPA programs, you probably realize they are not all the same. At Cornell, we’ve designed our program to get you ready for impact by emphasizing hand-on experiences to compliment your classroom learning.

Every student has the opportunity for a public administration internship with recent participants finding placements at organizations like The World Bank and the U.S. Department of State.

Our interdisciplinary curriculum ensures a broad base of knowledge while our concentrations, including one in Government, Politics and Policy Studies , provide domain expertise.

Our value is even clearer when you consider our price. Students in Cornell’s Ivy League MPA program pay significantly less than at other leading programs.

Course scheduling and course information is available on the Schedule of Classes . Graduate Students should select a Term. Then “Government” as the Subject and choose “Advanced Search” and select “MN or MC Graduate” for Level.

The mission of the Government Department Ph.D. program is to provide students with the analytical skills and substantive knowledge needed to both generate and evaluate research in political science, preparing them for careers at the highest levels of scholarship and teaching. A Georgetown Ph.D. in Government signifies theoretical, methodological, and substantive expertise in various topics of political significance, as well as the research and communication skills necessary for productive scholarship.

The degree indicates that the recipient has acquired extensive knowledge in at least two fields, both typically drawn from the four major subfields of political science, but which may also include related fields such as history, security studies, or public policy. A Georgetown Ph.D. in Government is granted only to students who have demonstrated the ability to synthesize large quantities of information and rigorously evaluate the merits of competing theoretical and empirical arguments. The degree indicates that its holder has obtained the analytical and methodological skills to design and conduct original research of the highest quality. It further certifies that its holder has the written and oral communication skills necessary to engage with debates at the leading edge of the field. Individuals holding a Georgetown Ph.D. in Government are also equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach political science at the university level in both survey courses and specialized seminars.

Doctoral-level seminars taken during coursework are designed to familiarize students with the scholarly literature in at least two fields of study. Students gain a broad understanding of the development and major topics of research within these fields, as well as expertise in several more specialized areas. Students learn to evaluate and engage with the major scholarly debates in their fields of study, both in classroom discussion and in written work. All students learn the methodological skills needed to carry out original research in their respective fields.

Ph.D. students are required to take comprehensive examinations in one major. The purpose of comprehensive examinations is to demonstrate a student’s broad familiarity with the literature in his or her fields of study. This prepares students both as professional members of a scholarly community and as future teachers at the university level. Our doctoral students write dissertations that consist of rigorous original research that contribute to our understanding of a topic of empirical importance and theoretical significance to the field of political science. Once a dissertation of high quality is complete, there is a dissertation defense at which the student presents the results of his or her research and is questioned about the implications of the work for the field of political science by the dissertation committee.

In addition to the formal requirements of the doctoral program, students are encouraged and expected to participate in opportunities for professional socialization and development. All four subfields of the department organize speaker series to host scholars from other universities and promote intellectual exchange. Doctoral students are also encouraged to attend our seminars on various aspects of the academic profession, including teaching, publishing, and the job market.

Students acquire teaching skills in a number of settings. Many serve as teaching assistants for the larger undergraduate courses offered by the department, while others may have the opportunity to teach their own undergraduate-level seminars. Students may also take advantage of training seminars offered by the department, as well as the certification offered through the  Apprenticeship in Teaching Program  run by the  Center for New Designs in Teaching and Learning .

Doctoral students engage with the political science community outside of Georgetown by attending specialized seminars and presenting their research at academic conferences.

For students admitted with a Fellowship, we provide tuition and a stipend of $38,000. Typically students in their first year are assigned a service-free fellowship and will work on coursework and related research. In their second year, students normally are assigned service assistantships and and will typically serve as TA’s in GOVT courses or on other assignments. Students in their fourth year are assigned service assistantships and typically serve as an RA for a professor or some other assignment. In the fifth year, students usually also are service-free conditional on having successfully defended their dissertation prospectus and advanced to ABD status.

government jobs after phd in management

Careers and Placements

Career opportunities, academic careers.

An academic career is usually the obvious choice for most doctoral students after they complete their thesis. Such a career usually involves a rich life of continuous learning and growth in an intellectually stimulating environment. Most of the fellows from IIM-A who have taken up this route, were absorbed as faculty in some of the top management institutes in India as well as in other countries. The usual track of a professor advances from an assistant professor up to the level of professor of the institute. If an academic chooses they could become a director of an institute. An academic career involves doing research, writing, and publishing; teaching and instruction; coaching and mentoring students; and consulting with industry, business, government, etc. Research is a significant portion of the life of an academician and allows them to gain recognition in their field of study globally. This career choice also enables networks across the world by travelling for conferences where they can present and discuss their current research work. The grooming for publishing top-quality research, presenting at conferences, and training for teaching all starts while the scholar is pursuing the PhD degree at IIM-A.

The institute not only provides the educational mechanisms to encourage such activities but also provides sufficient financial aid and incentives to boost this career option. Another excellent option for an early stage academician is to opt for a post-doctoral position. A postdoc, as it is colloquially known, is a position that can be taken up immediately after the completion of the thesis to strengthen expertise in the techniques of research as well their preferred topic of research. This period allows them to be associated with a professor, an academic or research institute, the industry or even think-tanks that require research on upcoming studies. This is a good option for scholars who want to create networks within top research and academic institutes, contribute to the world through their research and get a few publications. Some PhDs have also looked at opportunities pertaining to managing educational institutes which are beyond the undertaking of teaching & research assignments. And some others have become part of research centres at educational institutes as well as research organisations.

Corporate & Other Careers

Global management consulting firms value the skills of doctoral candidates since they develop exceptional analytical skills as well as have an in-depth knowledge of certain industries. Also, due to the statistical prowess and proficiency of quantitative skills, a number of companies hire doctorates as analysts especially in equity research and financial modelling firms. In addition, several PhDs have joined industry in their management verticals depending on their topic of specialisation such as Marketing, Finance, Strategy, HR etc

Careers in the Public Sector

The areas of research for several Ph.D. graduates traverse the boundaries of the traditional industry set-up. Public policy institutes, Indian and global think-tanks, large research firms, and organisations such as the UN and the World Bank hire doctorates.

The Government of India also absorbs PhDs. Whether it is via the policy route or on account of their in-depth knowledge and expertise in a field, many PhDs find a place in government.

Job Opportunities in Government Sector for PGDM Holders

The government sector offers a range of opportunities for PGDM holders. You can apply for a job in the public sector, or you can join the civil services. In addition, there are also opportunities in the private sector.

1] Public Sector

The public sector comprises government-owned companies and organizations. Jobs in the public sector are highly coveted, as they offer good pay and other benefits, such as housing and medical facilities. The eligibility criteria for a job in the public sector vary from organization to organization. However, most organizations require a minimum of two years of work experience.

2] Civil Services

Another option for PGDM holders is to join the civil services. The civil services comprise the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Police Service (IPS), and the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), among others. The selection process is extremely competitive, and only the best candidates are selected. To be eligible to take the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), you must have a degree from a recognized university.

3] Private Sector

There are also many opportunities in the private sector for PGDM holders. The private sector comprises companies and organizations that are not owned by the government. Jobs in the private sector offer good pay and other benefits, such as housing and medical facilities. The eligibility criteria for a job in the private sector vary from company to company.

How to Search and Apply for Government Jobs?

Now that you know whether or not you can apply for government jobs with a PGDM degree, it's time to start the application process. To help you get started follow the tips mentioned below:

  • Do your research: The best way to start your job search is to know what type of jobs are available and what you're eligible for. The government publishes detailed information about open positions and the eligibility criteria on its website.
  • Apply online: Most government jobs are now filled through an online application process. Make sure you have all the required documents (e.g., resume, cover letter, transcripts) ready before you start.
  • Be patient: Competition for government jobs is usually high, so don't get discouraged if you don't hear back from them right away. Keep checking the website for updates, and remember to follow up on your application status after a few weeks.

Different Types of Government Jobs Available for PGDM Graduates

When it comes to government jobs, PGDM graduates have a few different options. One of the most popular is the public sector where you can work in departments such as railways, public works, or health services. There are also defense forces like the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, which offer various positions for qualified applicants.

For those looking to pursue more specialized roles, PGDM students can also apply for positions in the financial and banking sector. This field of work is often seen in policy-making jobs such as insurance or banking officer positions.

Finally, there are some openings in research and development organizations like Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO). These jobs usually require very specific academic qualifications and so they can be fairly competitive. Still, they’re a great opportunity for those looking to get into government-related roles early on in their career.

Different Skills and Qualifications Needed for Various Positions in the Government Sector

Now, the question is – what kind of skills and qualifications do you need to secure a government job? Well, this will depend largely on the job you are applying for. Different positions in the government sector require varying qualifications, so you’ll want to research different opportunities carefully.

For instance, managerial positions will typically require that you have prior work experience and an MBA or PGDM degree. On the other hand, certain entry-level positions may only require that you have excellent written and spoken communication skills.

You’ll also want to determine if any certifications are required for a specific job. Some roles in the government sector (such as those related to finance or IT) may require that you hold a specific certification in order to be considered for employment.

You may have a few questions about applying for government jobs as a PGDM student. Let’s look into some of them:

  • Can I apply for government jobs after completing my PGDM? Yes, you can apply for government jobs with a PGDM. However, there may be specific eligibility criteria you will need to meet, such as age and experience requirements, to be able to apply.

However, it is worth noting that some employers require candidates who have also obtained an additional qualification like an MBA.
  • Are there any entrance exams required to sit for government job interviews? Yes. You will typically have to pass a qualifying exam in order to qualify for an interview with the relevant government department or agency.

Outback national park expands with $21 million donation to help buy Queensland's Vergemont Station

An outback Queensland cattle station has been purchased by the state government in what's been dubbed "one of the largest and most environmentally significant" acquisitions in recent history.

The sale of Vergemont Station, a 352,589-hectare property near Longreach, was purchased in a philanthropic partnership with The Nature Conservancy which brokered an anonymous $21 million donation for the sale.

This latest property sale follows the acquisition of Tonkoro and Melrose stations in January to expand existing national parks and protected areas.

The addition of the three properties adds 555,589 hectares to Queensland's national parks, reserves and protected areas.

Expanding protected areas

In 2023, the Queensland government made a funding commitment of $262.5 million to expand and better manage protected areas.

This landmark deal will see Vergemont Station and neighbouring property Tonkoro combine with a number of national parks and reserves in order to create a protected areas corridor of almost 1.5 million hectares of the Channel Country.

map showing stations acquired by the government in outback queensland

Melrose Station, south-east of Winton, will be added to the Bladensburg National Park, which will see the park almost double in size to around 150,000 hectares.

Vergemont Station, which is larger than the Australian Capital Territory, sits at the headwaters of the Lake Eyre Basin, one of Queensland's most important inland river catchments and one of the last free-flowing river systems in the world.

The conservation corridor is a key habitat for endangered and vulnerable species like the night parrot and the yellow-footed rock-wallaby, according to Environment Minister Leanne Linard.

"It really is an area of global significance," Ms Linard said.

Ms Linard said the government expects a transition period of 12 to 24 months before the property becomes protected land.

The donation brokered by The Nature Conservancy is believed to be the single largest donation for land protection in Australia, according to Dr James Fitzsimons, a senior advisor at the conservation group.

"It highlights the power of leveraged gifts, enabling philanthropists and governments alike to achieve outcomes far beyond what is possible alone," Mr Fitzsimons said.

"This model will be essential if Australia is to achieve its target of protecting 30 per cent of lands and 30 per cent of oceans by 2030."

Miners worried

Vergemont Station is located just south-east of the historical mining town Opalton , and while it is primarily a cattle station, it is also home to many opal miners who have mining leases on the pastoral land.

Many of those in the industry fear they will be forced out of their mining leases once the property transitions to a national park.

The opal industry is estimated to generate around $14 million in the Winton area, with the Queensland Boulder Opal Association saying the area has become the boulder opal capital of the world.

President and opal miner Alison Summerville said while the confirmation has ended months of speculation and rumours it has not quelled miners' fears.

"We're devastated," Ms Summerville said.

"This is the national gemstone of Australia and we were just left hanging. The whole industry was left waiting."

Ms Summerville said there are 60 mining claims on the property and miners who live and work there feel like they are "in a battle to exist" with the government.

"We've been given absolutely no information," she said.

"These people are just hanging by a thread wondering where their future is."

A woman points at a piece of opal, while a young man and woman gather around to learn.

However Ms Linard said she wanted to reassure miners that their leases will be honoured.

"We will allow small-scale opal mining to continue," she said.

"We have always that we will work to ensure an ecologically sustainable coexistence between the existing open mining operations and conservation.

"The property itself is about 352,000 hectares … and we intend to dedicate at least 300,000 hectares of that to become national park.

"But the remainder will continue to support opal mining operations."

Land management an 'enormous' job

Now that the protected area and national park will be expanding to more than 1.5 million hectares, Ms Linard said the government was committed to ensuring the land was managed responsibly.

She said it would be an "enormous job" managing that much land.

"Invasive weeds and pests are a massive issue for us," she said,

"They threaten the health and the biodiversity on our properties and country.

"We have the same challenges that landholders have, so managing that is absolutely part of our everyday work."

A National Park sign in front of a fence

Despite the increase in land the government will now have to manage, the minster said the government was not sure how many extra rangers it would need to look after the new land area.

"We're not only investing in expanding our protected area estate, but also the management of that estate," she said.

"We know that's important and we want to protect it for generations to come."
