The Best Online Education Solutions for K-12
- Elevate In Action
April 12, 2024
With the national teacher shortage showing no signs of easing up any time soon, district administrators are turning to new EdTech solutions to streamline operations, address school challenges, and ensure education quality.
Chances are, you’ve considered online education solutions for your district, too. But how do you find the right one with so many options available today? We’re here to help. Read on for the best online education solutions for K-12.
How To Evaluate Online Education Solutions
If you want to implement an EdTech solution in your district — whether for instruction delivery or digital safety — the key is identifying which solution best meets your district’s biggest priorities.
You need to assess and compare what different solutions offer in order to identify which best meets your needs. Key factors to evaluate include:
- Audience type: Different solutions have varying target audiences. Some target K-12 learners, others teachers, and others district administrators. Make sure you understand who the end-user of the solution is so you can evaluate the experience for that user.
- User interface: A good online education solution should be easy to use — not frustrating and confusing. So, a user-friendly interface is another important factor. The easier it is to access resources, the likelier you are to achieve your desired goals, be it promoting digital safety, ensuring continuous learning, etc.
- Interactivity : This is a vital consideration, as it propels engagement. A highly interactive solution can keep users motivated and engaged and boost achievements.
- Customization options : Every school district has varying needs. So, you’ll want to find a customizable solution you can personalize to meet your unique needs depending on the use base, whether it’s admins, teachers, students, or a blend.
- Technical support features: Unfortunately, you may encounter issues when using your chosen EdTech solution. In such cases, you want to be able to reach your chosen platform’s support team as easily as possible for troubleshooting and guidance. Find a platform that offers help desk support to prevent or minimize platform downtime.
Best K-12 Livestream Instruction
Livestream instruction is vital for K-12 students as it allows direct interaction with teachers and peers in real time, creating a dynamic learning environment. LIVE instruction is the best version of livestream instruction, as it mimics real-life student-teacher interactions. To achieve the best learning outcomes, you need the perfect LIVE learning solution — and we know just which one to choose.
Elevate K-12
Elevate K-12 is a LIVE teaching solution that mimics in-person learning by providing real-time in-classroom teaching. It’s the top choice on this list of solutions because it provides schools with highly experienced certified teachers who are rigorously vetted and receive ongoing coaching and professional development. This ensures students receive quality instruction from the first day of class to the last.
Further, many Elevate teachers have additional credentials for specialties like special education and English as an additional language (EAL). So they can meet a wide range of needs in your school district.
With Elevate K-12, learning occurs through our proprietary LIVE Portal. Through the portal, teachers livestream their lessons, interact in real-time with students, give quizzes and assessments, and much more.
The portal also makes learning more accessible for students. It has a simple user interface for easy navigation, and students can do everything they would do in a traditional classroom, from asking questions to raising their hands.
The LIVE Portal has features designed to replicate face-to-face teaching, allowing for natural and engaging conversations between students, their teachers, and their peers. It also has features that enhance learning accessibility and student engagement beyond what is possible in a traditional in-classroom setting. For example, features like private chat give students who may be hesitant to express themselves in a public setting an alternative avenue for participation.
Elevate K-12 is compatible with various learning needs as it facilitates real-time engagement, allowing educators to tailor their teaching strategies to individual needs. It also offers optional class recordings so students can review course content at their own pace when they’re absent from class or if they need a refresher.
Best Online Education Solutions for Virtual Classrooms
More school districts are embracing virtual learning in the wake of the continuing teacher shortage. As of 2021, 20% of school districts in the country had already adopted or were in the process of incorporating virtual learning platforms into their systems. These platforms are online environments where students and teachers can interact in real time, simulating a traditional classroom setting. If you’re looking for a top-rated virtual classroom platform, look no further than:
Class is an online education solution with a broad target audience, from K-12 students to higher-education learners and even governments. For K-12 students, it’s the best option for virtual classrooms.
Class aims to help close opportunity gaps, improving accessibility for underprivileged populations and those with geographic limitations. But this solution for virtual classrooms doesn’t just create a better environment for students — it also provides educators and school administrators with valuable time-saving analytics, including student participation and automated attendance.
This solution connects seamlessly with learning management systems (LMS) that use LTI 1.3, including Moddle, Open LMS, and Schoology, allowing teachers to easily create and assign tasks.
The solution is compatible with various learning needs as it blends synchronous and asynchronous instruction . Students can learn in real time and access transcripts from their class sessions afterward for review.
Best Online Education Solutions for Evaluating Students’ Progress and Performance
Traditionally, student performance is measured through formal assessments like tests and quizzes. New online solutions allow for performance to be measured in fun, interactive formats for students, making assessments exciting rather than inspiring dread.
The best online solutions to evaluate student progress help teachers adjust pacing to their class’ needs and identify students who may be falling behind while gamifying the comprehension check for students. Our top pick is:
Kahoot! is a popular tool for assessing student comprehension and content mastery because it’s a game-based learning platform.
Teachers can create their own fun, engaging game based on their lesson plan or access one from the game library. They can even add videos, images, or diagrams to engage students further!
As students complete the games, teachers can use their performance to gain insight into how well they’ve grasped the lessons.
Best Online Education Solutions for Enhancing Digital Safety
The internet has undoubtedly revolutionized education by allowing easy, unlimited access to information. Unfortunately, not all information is suitable for K-12 students. This makes it vital for districts to invest in solutions that promote digital safety. At the top of our list is:
GoGuardian
GoGuardian is a digital learning environment application focused on ensuring digital safety. The tool enhances digital safety by allowing teachers to implement guardrails that allow or restrict access to specific websites and multimedia.
In addition, GoGuardian monitors student activity to identify learners with high-risk behaviors in their digital activities. When it does, it sends notifications to educators, allowing them to take appropriate measures early.
Best Online Education Solutions for Learning Management
Learning management solutions have become common in many schools as they allow educators to create, manage, and distribute e-learning resources seamlessly. A popular, highly effective option is:
Instructure
Instructure is a centralized learning management solution that allows teachers to create and offer courses seamlessly through the solution’s course builder. Since educators design their own courses, you can have full control over your district’s education quality.
It has various offerings, including Canvas LMS for sharing course materials and Canvas Studio, which allows educators to teach online courses through video. The Canvas Catalog feature also lets course creators sell courses.
The solution has options for a wide variety of instruction formats, such as independent study and direct teacher-student instruction.
How To Determine Which Type of Solution To Prioritize
With these many options, selecting one for your school district can be overwhelming. The key to choosing the best solution is identifying your district’s biggest challenges and their impact on student outcomes. This way, you can choose a solution that best meets these challenges to improve student success.
It’s also important to ensure quality teaching for better learning outcomes. While all the tools discussed here have unique contributions to online education, none is as effective as LIVE teaching solutions in promoting student success.
Why Choose a LIVE Teaching Solution?
Student engagement is a critical part of the learning experience. This is one of the reasons LIVE teaching solutions like Elevate K-12 are a great choice for school districts.
As opposed to asynchronous or online-only options, these solutions foster immediate feedback between teachers and students, facilitating teaching customization.
Teachers can handle student concerns in real time and give assessments that provide insights into learners’ course comprehension, allowing them to improve the learning experience.
Here are a few more reasons why school districts prefer LIVE teaching solutions:
- They’re interactive, helping teachers build relationships and rapport with their students.
- They help with social and emotional development by building a sense of community between students and classmates, as well as students and teachers.
- They provide a consistent and structured educational environment, helping learners stay focused.
- They allow students to seek clarifications in real time, limiting the risk of confusion.
- They create a sense of accountability for students by enabling students to form genuine connections with their teachers. Learners are more likely to engage in classroom activities and complete assignments.
LIVE teaching solutions improve students’ learning experiences, classroom engagement, and, ultimately, outcomes.
Try Elevate K-12 as a Model for LIVE Teaching Success
Whether you’re looking to improve student performance or optimize lesson planning, online education solutions can help address numerous challenges for districts. From e-learning to resource sharing, they make learning more accessible and convenient, delivering an effective learning experience. If your district is struggling to ensure quality teaching amid teacher vacancies, LIVE teaching should be one of the highest-priority solutions to consider.
Elevate K-12 is one of the top live teaching solutions, as it gives you access to fully certified teachers guaranteed to make learning not only effective but also fun and engaging. With Elevate, learners get an in-person-like experience, as they can see and talk to their instructor like they would in a typical classroom, boosting engagement.

K-12 education reform: Top issues & solutions
The landscape of K-12 education is constantly evolving, presenting numerous challenges that demand innovative solutions . By addressing these issues and implementing effective education reform, we can create a more empowering and inclusive learning environment for all students. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the top K-12 education issues and solutions, and explain how education reform solutions can lead to transformative results.
Top K-12 education issues
One-size-fits-all approach.
The traditional education system adopts a standardized, one-size-fits-all approach, which fails to cater to individual students’ unique needs and learning styles. This leads to disengagement, frustration, and poor learning outcomes.
Lack of individualized education
Students are more likely to thrive in an environment that offers personalized learning experiences tailored to their interests and abilities. However, many schools struggle to provide such customized education options, limiting students’ potential for success.
Inadequate preparation for the real world
The current education system often fails to equip students with the essential life skills and practical knowledge needed to navigate the real world. As a result, many students feel unprepared for the workforce and adult responsibilities.
K-12 education reform solutions
Embracing individualized education.
To address these pressing issues, K-12 education reform efforts should prioritize increasing access to individualized learning experiences that cater to each student’s unique needs and interests. Personalized education options, such as self-directed learning, can empower students to take charge of their educational journey, leading to increased engagement and success.
VELA’s vision for education is to shift the purpose from schooling to learning, from an expert-driven, one-size-fits-all system rooted in standardization and uniform outcomes to normalizing a multitude of learning approaches and outcomes.
Self-directed learning and innovative models
Innovative models like self-directed learning allow students to set their own educational goals and pursue their interests at their own pace. Examples of such pioneering initiatives include The Forest School , which emphasizes leadership skills, communication skills, and team dynamics, and Bloom Academy , which incorporates character development into its curriculum.
Tailored skills training and apprenticeships
By offering tailored skills training and apprenticeship opportunities, schools can better prepare students for the workforce and real-world challenges. Programs like Electric Girls empower young women to pursue STEM subjects, while One Stone school enables students to create individualized curricula based on their unique interests.
Expanding educational options and access
K-12 education reform solutions should also focus on expanding educational options and access for all students. By offering a diverse range of learning opportunities, schools can better accommodate the needs of every learner.
Scholarship programs and financial assistance
Scholarship programs like Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) provide financial assistance to help students access tailored education options. Organizations like Love Your School offer personalized support to families seeking alternative education models, empowering them to make informed choices and pursue the best educational path for their children.
Policy Changes and Advocacy
Advocating for policy changes that promote educational choice and innovation can drive meaningful education reform. Grassroots activists, educators, and organizations that are part of the Stand Together community work to champion new education policies and initiatives, fostering a more inclusive and individualized K-12 education experience.
Fostering community engagement and collaboration
Building strong relationships between educators, students, families, and communities is essential for driving transformative change in K-12 education. By working together, stakeholders can develop effective solutions that address pressing issues and promote educational success.
Sharing success stories and best practices
Organizations, like Love Your School , highlight the power of collaboration and the diverse array of educational options available to families. By sharing success stories and best practices, these platforms inspire action and foster a sense of community among stakeholders.
Supporting education entrepreneurs and innovators
Encouraging and supporting education entrepreneurs and innovators is key to driving K-12 education reform. By investing in new and creative approaches to education, we can unlock the potential of individualized learning and empower students, educators, and communities to thrive.
The future of K-12 education
The future of K-12 education lies in embracing individualized learning experiences and expanding access to diverse educational options. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, we can empower students, educators, and communities to overcome challenges and usher in a new era of K-12 education that truly serves the unique needs of every learner.

Museum of Science, Boston Designs New Interactive K-12 Curricula to Engage Students in Climate Solutions
New youth engineering solutions (yes) and engineering is elementary (eie) curricula, kahoot, and tinytap games empower kids to confront climate change .
BOSTON, MA — As part of its yearlong Earthshot spotlight dedicated to climate solutions and sustainability, the Museum of Science, Boston has developed a suite of interactive curricula and educational games to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and passionate problem solvers. Available in English and Spanish, the new Earthshot educational resources span grades preK-12 and formats, including Youth Engineering Solutions (YES) , Engineering is Elementary (EiE) , Kahoot! , and TinyTap , encouraging students of all ages to imagine and design innovative technologies to help solve pressing environmental problems. Launched early this year, Youth Engineering Solutions (YES) brings the expertise and creativity of the Museum of Science into classrooms. YES lessons are equity-oriented and socially engaged, connecting engineering challenges to relevant real-world problems in students’ lives and communities and inviting them to consider the impacts of engineered designs on different individuals, groups, and systems. In 2024, the Museum is offering 21 units on environmental issues ranging from green energy and energy conservation to sustainable cooking, recycling, and bioplastics. “The preK-12 education division at the Museum of Science is integral to our mission to make public science learning accessible to everyone,” said Christine Cunningham, senior vice president of STEM Learning. “Those who cannot currently visit the Museum in person will find its high-quality educational materials online and in classrooms. As part of our yearlong Earthshot spotlight, our new YES curricula engage youth in grades K-8 in activities focused on green engineering, sustainability, and climate solutions, empowering them to make sound environmental choices.” YES and EiE lessons invite students to build solar ovens, create windmill blades, insulate model homes, redesign model cities to minimize storm water runoff, improve processes for cleaning up model oil spills, engineer trash collectors, program environmental computer games, and design water filters, tabletop maglev transportation systems, and vertical farms. Free of charge, YES units are designed for classroom, out-of-school, and at-home settings, drawing on more than three decades of research and development by the Museum’s education division. Each unit’s activities introduce green engineering through storybooks, covering science concepts, product life cycles, and environmental impacts. YES invites students to imagine, plan, create, test, and improve their solutions, engaging them in the systematic, iterative process of engineering design. Complementary to YES, the Museum’s eight Earthshot Kahoot! learning games—four in English, and four in Spanish—explore topics such as waste and recycling, mass transit, sustainable farming, and the green future of work and jobs. Created for grades 9-12 with a career readiness focus, Earthshot kahoots have been refined through input from the Museum’s Fenway High School student advisors. For younger learners in preschool, the Museum is releasing two TinyTap games on climate, with a focus on pollution and microplastics through storytelling and activities. “The Museum brings public science learning to over 100M people every year through our digital content,” said Alexis Rapo, chief digital officer. “With our Kahoot! and TinyTap learning games, we are engaging and enabling budding scientists everywhere, fueling their interests, skills, and knowledge to pursue careers in STEM.” Aligned with the Year of the Earthshot onsite, the Museum of Science’s new curricula and digital learning games teach us how we can and will live sustainably on Earth, exploring the innovations that are transforming the ways we live, move, eat, and work.
2023-2024 Academic Supports and Student and School Staff Well-Being Project
The National Governors Association’s K-12 Education Team is supporting Alabama, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wyoming to address student academic needs and student and school staff well-being and mental health in their states.
As reflected in Governors’ 2024 State of the State Addresses , bipartisan Governors across the country are prioritizing student success by addressing student academic needs and student and school staff mental health and well-being in their states.
For academic needs, Governors are working to tackle this challenge with multiple initiatives, including through intensive tutoring, leveraging afterschool and summer learning and enrichment programs, addressing chronic absenteeism, and boosting math and literacy supports.
Governors are not only looking at student support from an academic lens but also by addressing students’ mental health and well-being given the increased fear, stress, and anxiety that resulted from the pandemic. Governors’ initiatives in this area include a focus on strengthening cross-agency collaboration between education, health, and human services; increasing parent, family, student, and community engagement; ensuring easier access to student and school-based behavioral health supports; and incorporating mental health and well-being as part of comprehensive strategies to address school safety.
This project builds on the work of the 2022 Student and School Staff Well-Being Project , which specifically addressed student and school staff well-being needs during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
This project is also complementary to a Policy Academy that NGA is currently supporting on youth mental health with six Governors’ offices and that builds off of Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey’s 2022-23 Chair’s Initiative on Strengthening Youth Mental Health .
Project Snapshots
The following provides a snapshot of Governors’ initiatives as part of the project and their ongoing support for students, schools, and families in these areas:
The Governor’s office is working to address the recommendations made by The Commission on Teaching and Learning , with specific focus in areas of literacy, numeracy, early learning, Turnaround Schools, education finance, and the educator workforce.

The Governor’s office is scaling the implementation of BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) to 71 schools across the state. Focusing on strengthening school relationships has demonstrated significant impacts on student and school staff well-being, academic success and a decrease in chronic absenteeism.
BARR Highlights in Maine:
- At Brunswick Middle School , the building administration team emphasized that the positive changes in the school are largely due to BARR’s impact on campus.
- The Dirigo High School attendance rate has improved by 6% from the 2022-2023 school year to now!
- Wendy Harvey, Co-Principal at Westbrook High School stated, “BARR is one of the key elements that has helped change this building. Our culture has improved, teacher collaboration has improved, our relationships have improved.”
- Calais Elementary School is implementing BARR with fifth and sixth grade teams. Commissioner Pender Makin visited the sixth grade U-Time Class where students learn about classmates and their teachers to help them understand each other better and learn more about their community.
- Mt. Blue High School has utilized BARR for five years, helping their ninth graders adjust to school and be successful. School leaders have seen increased attendance, lower failure rates and stronger relationships between educators and students while implementing BARR.
New Hampshire
The Governor’s office is focused on providing well-being supports for students as they move from high school to postsecondary education or the workforce. The state is seeking to bridge the gap between these systems and impact student well-being, mental health, and academic and career success. The Governor’s office will be hosting multiple convenings at postsecondary institutions around the state to bring together college-bound high school seniors, parents and families, and high school educators and counselors to bridge support on and off campus. This work builds on the efforts of Governor Sununu’s School Safety Preparedness Task Force and the Governor’s support for the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement program that provides comprehensive student well-being supports across the state.

Governor Scott has set a goal to achieve universal afterschool and summer access for all youth statewide by 2025. In order to expand high-quality afterschool and summer programs in Vermont, most recently Governor Scott and the Vermont Agency of Education announced a $3.5 million grant program open to Vermont schools and other municipal, private and non-profit partners who offer accessible, enriching activities to youth. This is the first grant to utilize a new ongoing State-funding source, which comes on the heels of over $10 million worth of grants deployed since 2021, and compliments the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program. Grants can be used to expand existing after school programs, create new ones or create comprehensive afterschool centers.

MS lawmakers still can't agree how to fund K-12 education. House reintroduces its own plan
Democratic leaders troubled by advocates of inspire act.
The Mississippi House of Representatives has revived its vehicle for a new K-12 education funding model and sent it back to the Senate for further consideration.
On Wednesday in the Mississippi State Capitol, House Education Chairman Rep. Rob Roberson asked lawmakers to pass an amendment to Senate Bill 2693, which originally sought to provide a process for failing school districts to move into a district of transformation. The bill passed 103-16.
That amendment was to strip all of the bill's language and replace it with his INSPIRE Act, a new funding model that would replace the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, which uses an objective math formula that dictates lawmakers to fund it, with a new enrollment and committee-based funding model. The INSPIRE Act has already died twice in the Senate.

"This will give us one more opportunity to give the Senate a chance to look at this and do what is best and right for our school children," Roberson, R-Starkville, said.
The House initially passed the INSPIRE Act under HB 1453 March 7, but Senate Education Chairman Dennis DeBar, R-Leakesville, did not pass it through his committee by an April 2 deadline to move it onto the Senate's general calendar.
In March, the House also amended DeBar's MAEP revision, SB 2332, striking all of the language and inserting the INSPIRE Act. That move kept the bill alive until Tuesday, when the Senate voted not to concur and to let the bill die instead of taking it to conference, which would feature lawmakers from both chambers to possibly iron out a compromise.
On Wednesday, the Senate also passed a $2.94 billion appropriation to almost fully fund MAEP for the third time since its inception in the 1990s, along with language in the bill for the Mississippi Department of Education to study whether MAEP or the INSPIRE Act is a better funding model. MDE would report back to lawmakers with the results of that study in October.
Under the House plan, lawmakers would need to appropriate $3.01 billion to fully fund it.

Democratic leaders asking for an open education discussion
Republicans aren't the only ones talking about the heated debate between the Senate and the House over how to fund education, though.
Democratic leaders Rep. Robert Johnson, D-Natchez and Sen. Derrick Simmons, D-Greenville, said in a press release issued earlier this week that they feel throwing out MAEP so quickly is a step in the wrong direction.
"No one in this building is under the illusion that MAEP is a perfect formula," Simmons and Johnson said. "However, scrapping it completely and in this fashion — quickly and without thorough vetting — isn’t the solution. It’s certainly not the solution when some of the new formula’s architects and most vocal supporters are people who’ve historically sought to dismantle public education at every turn."
DeBar, who tried to kill the INSPIRE Act on Wednesday, had similar concerns and said he was willing to meet with House members in the summer or next year to come to a more thorough decision.
However, House leaders, including Roberson and Rep. Jansen Owen, R-Poplarville, told the Clarion Ledger that if the INSPIRE Act isn't the state's funding model by the end of the legislative session, they would rather come back for a special session than to fund MAEP. House Speaker Jason White had similar words in a press release issued Tuesday.
"I have clearly communicated with Senate leadership the House position that we have funded MAEP for the last time," White said.
Johnson and Simmons also had concerns over the origins of data used in the INSPIRE Act and why the bill has been supported by third party groups advocating for school choice and public funds going toward private education.
"It doesn’t make things any easier when we can’t get a straightforward answer on where theformula’s numbers came from or why the groups at the table from the formula’s inceptionweren’t public education advocates or longtime legislative allies, but instead were groups whosupport school choice and other policies that undermine Mississippi’s public education system," Simmons and Johnson said.

With SB 2693 now in the Senate, DeBar has until April 25 to take any action on the bill. Similarly, the House will have until April 25 to pass the Senate's education funding bill. School districts are currently funded through MAEP until July 1.
