Capstone are senior-level project courses that allow you to solve a substantial problem with knowledge gained from many areas in computer science and engineering. Students work in teams to define a problem, develop a solution, produce and demonstrate an artifact that solves the problem, and present their work. Class time focuses on the project design and implementation, but it may also include lectures on the practical application of advanced topics. Interdisciplinary projects that require interaction with other departments are encouraged.

A Capstone course is not simply an advanced course in a particular sub-area, nor is it an unstructured project course. A Capstone is designed to be a culmination of your learning, and a chance to develop and express many skills at once: For example, technical expertise and communication ability.

Capstone Goals

  • Projects must be large enough to require teams of several students to work on over one quarter.
  • Students must apply concepts from more than one sub-area of CSE (at the 300-level and above).
  • The work must involve a substantial design effort.
  • Students must present their work using formal oral presentations and written reports.

  • Description: The main goal of this course is to open up new career options in robotics for computer science and engineering students. We will touch on robot motion, navigation, perception, planning, and interaction through mini-lectures, labs, and assignments, eventually integrating these components to create autonomous or semi-autonomous robotic functionalities.   • Description: Virtual and Augmented reality are promising technologies that are certain to make an impact on the future of business and entertainment. In this capstone, students will work in small project teams to build applications and prototype systems using state of the art Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Seattle is a nexus of VR tech, with Oculus Research, Valve, Microsoft (hololens), Google (cardboard, jump), and teams in the area. We will be developing on the latest VR/AR headsets and platforms, and will bring in leading VR experts for lectures and to supervise student projects. Students will experience the end-to-end product cycle from design to deployment, and learn about VR/AR technology and applications. Description: Accessibility is quickly emerging as a leading consideration for product design and engineering. Disability is part of the human condition – almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life, and those who survive to old age will experience increasing difficulties. Disability is complex and heterogeneous, and the technological interventions to accommodate different abilities are wide ranging and vary with context. Many familiar technologies like voice recognition, text-to-speech, and gaze detection were initially engineered to assist people with disabilities gain more access and increase participation in daily life. Students will work in interdisciplinary project teams that include community members with expertise on project needs. NYU Tandon’s Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP) is proud to host its annual Capstone Program to serve its mission of finding data-driven solutions to increasingly complex urban challenges.

Each year, graduate students in the MS in Applied Urban Science & Informatics degree partner with sponsors and CUSP faculty members to collaborate on a two-semester project that seeks to address a critical urban issue or research problem. Project proposal applications for the 2024-25 cycle are due April 12.

How Does it Work?

It all starts with a question. Do you have a research problem or data-driven project that you’d like a little help with? Do you need access to both data science skills and deep policy knowledge to find a scalable solution? CUSP accepts project proposals from sponsors such as government agencies, private companies, academic institutions, think tanks, startups, nonprofits, NYU faculty members–anyone who is also on a mission to make cities more equitable, efficient, livable, and technologically advanced. If accepted into the program, sponsors are paired with a team of three to five graduate students and a CUSP faculty advisor to embark on an intensive project spanning two semesters. Similar to CUSP's research activity, capstone projects must fit inside one of our main focus areas: urban health, urban environment, or urban infrastructure.

Project Details

Capstone projects approach real-world urban challenges through problem identification and scoping, data collection, and applying data analytics and visualization techniques. Typical deliverables include urban data analytic reports, data visualizations including interactive applications, research websites, research publications, and prescriptive policy solutions.

The capstone program is the pinnacle of CUSP graduate students’ hands-on experience and is tied to required Urban Science Intensive I & II courses in the fall and spring semesters of their second year. Therefore, it is important that any potential sponsor is prepared to meet with their student team on a recurring basis and to provide support as needed.

The best capstone projects are impact-driven and include a coherent, well-defined urban problem. An effective capstone project:

  • Ties directly to the needs of the sponsor organization as well as CUSP’s mission;
  • Identifies a discrete, tangible, and deliverable end product that can provide actionable insight;
  • Is quantitative and can be approached using a range of data science and informatics methodologies (e.g. network analysis, predictive modeling, machine learning, spatial analytics, etc.);
  • Requires data that is available and in-hand prior to the start of a project; and
  • Includes a supportive sponsor that will engage with the students, ensure access to necessary information, and assist with connecting student teams to appropriate experts and stakeholders.

Project Timeline

Dates listed below are estimated and are subject to change. 

  • April 12, 2024:  Deadline for sponsors to  submit project proposals . 
  • May 15, 2024:  2024-25 Capstone projects and sponsors announced.
  • August 15, 2024:  Deadline for sponsors to submit data to be used in projects. 
  • September 4, 2024:  First day of Urban Science Intensive I class.
  • September 9-13, 2024:  Meet and greet events between project sponsors, mentors, and students (virtual meetings permitted). 
  • September 13, 2024:  Deadline for students to submit preferences for project assignments.
  • September 25, 2024:  Student team + sponsor matches to be announced. 
  • December TBD, 2024:  Spring milestone updates/presentations.  
  • April TBD, 2025:  Final deliverables due; Capstone presentations will be given at the Applied Urban Science Conference.

FAQ for CUSP Students

Students in their second year will enroll in USI I for their fall semester, and USI II in the spring semester. Both are required courses and must be taken consecutively. Course registration dates are announced via email. 

Students are able to submit up to 5 preferred projects after viewing the Capstone catalog and attending the Meet & Greet, but selection is not guaranteed.

Students teams are carefully selected to ensure that a variety of skills and experience are included in the working group. Requests may be made, but are not guaranteed.

Classes are scheduled for Thursdays 6pm-8:30pm, but at it’s the discretion of the instructors to set the meetings.

Students can expect to spend at least 75 hours on their research project outside of regularly scheduled class each semester.

FAQ for Potential Sponsors

We accept sponsor applications from all public, private sector, or academic organizations looking to address a critical urban issue or research problem. Our sponsors in the past have included city agencies across the US, international universities, and non-profits. Your organization does not need to be located in New York City or the United States, as long as you can provide regular communication with your capstone team.

New York University Community: Any NYU research center, faculty member, or researcher with a new or ongoing research project is welcome to apply!

A Project Agreement will be developed and executed, which describes the project purpose, scope, and expected outputs. This document will also outline data sharing protocols and any restrictions on shared data.

We seek project sponsors that are engaged and enthusiastic about the use of data science in improving city operations and planning. We expect project sponsors to identify a primary Point of Contact for the project who will ensure data sharing agreements are executed; will provide regular feedback on the students’ work, through periodic meetings and review of progress reports and presentations; and will be able to attend the final project presentations. The specific expectations and time commitment will vary by the needs of the project, but project sponsors should be able to commit 1-2 hours every two weeks to the above activities. Our student teams are very capable, and this level of engagement will help to ensure the final deliverables and output provide value for, and are of use to, the project sponsor.

The CUSP Data Facility is a secure research data environment with datasets, tools, and expert staff to provide research support services to students, faculty, and city agency employees.  The CUSP Data Facility (CDF) connects all of these users to relevant datasets for urban policy research. The CDF reduces the multiple technical, legal, bureaucratic, capacity, and cost barriers to data access, so that the full research, policy, and operational benefits of data products can be realized by academic researchers and students, City analysts and managers, and other key partners in urban science.

We recognize that much of the data we manage, from streaming sensor data to agency administrative data, is sensitive and we handle it accordingly. The CUSP Data Facility’s Safe Data Environment comprises a multi-faceted approach to maintain safe data, through safe people, projects, settings, and outputs.  This approach combines technical protocols, user policies, and user-centered design in order to ensure adherence to data governance requirements.

  • Safe people: regular trainings on responsible data use and privacy & confidentiality,  combined with updated online resources on best practices in data management
  • Safe projects: standards and protocols for managing access to datasets and databases at the project level
  • Safe settings: a secure data environment with restricted data ingress and egress
  • Safe outputs: a statistical disclosure limitation prior to any export of products derived from restricted data

The Data Facility and Student Capstone Projects  – CUSP students and faculty and host agencies are encouraged to perform all Capstone research within the Data Facility.  CUSP will process new project data and create project workspaces where designated team members can work with their project-specific datasets and collaborate on data analysis and visualization.  Other data facility users will not have access to the project workspace.

There is no fee associated with the Capstone projects.

We are not accepting proposals at this time. When the application opens, we will make the form available on this page. 

Capstone project group selection methods will be based on several criteria including students’ ranked preferences. Based on student interest, it is possible that an approved project may not be utilized. Demographics and competencies will also be considered in order to ensure group heterogeneity. Any potential conflicts of interest must be disclosed by project sponsors in advance. 

Project sponsors are able to provide input about what types of skills may be most useful to their project activities but will not be able to directly choose their student teams.

For-profit school accused of preying on Black students reaches $28.5 million settlement

A for-profit college accused of targeting women and Black students with false advertising about how long it would take to complete a degree, then extracting millions of dollars in extra tuition payments, agreed to a $28.5 million settlement announced Thursday.

The class-action lawsuit alleged that Walden University generated millions of dollars in excess tuition and fees by prolonging projects required for Doctorate in Business Administration degrees.

“Students alleged that Walden masked deception as diversity by targeting their DBA degrees at Black and female students who were hoping to advance their careers,” said Aaron Ament, president of the National Student Legal Defense Network, which filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Maryland with civil rights law firm Relman Colfax.

Walden is the latest for-profit college to face repercussions over allegedly misleading students about costs. Other for-profit schools have faced action from the federal government over accusations of deception, including Ashford University and DeVry .

Walden, an online university, said in a written statement that it agreed to the settlement “in pursuit of the best interests of all parties involved.” The school said it remained committed to helping students with their professional goals.

In total, the lawsuit estimates Walden extracted over $28 million in excess tuition and fees from students. It alleged that Walden misrepresented how long it would take to complete the doctoral degree and the number of credits required, specifically for a capstone project component of the program.

In the proposed settlement, which requires court approval, Walden also agreed to disclose cost and completion time on its website and restructure its dissertation committees. An estimated 3,000 students would be eligible to request compensation under the settlement, said Tara Ramchandani, a lawyer for the plaintiffs.

The National Student Legal Defense Network argued the school’s tactics amounted to “reverse redlining,” a reference to housing discrimination practices that disproportionately target minorities, by its focus on attracting women and Black students into the program.

For example, Walden disproportionately targeted its advertising towards predominantly Black cities, according to the lawsuit. Forty-one percent of students in the university’s doctoral programs were Black, seven times the national average, according to the student defense network.

Ament said the case was one of the first where a federal court ruled that reverse redlining protections could be applied to higher education.

Capstone group works with Community Foundation to help those in poverty

A senior capstone group from Trine University’s Ketner School of Business completed a project this semester to help those whom many feel are invisible.

The team worked in partnership with the Steuben County Community Foundation to help bring attention and assistance to those dealing with poverty in the county.

The project grew out of a poverty simulation and education event the foundation hosted on Trine’s campus last fall.

Carmyn Hottell, director of community engagement and leadership for the foundation, said area organizations feel clients dealing with poverty are invisible.

“Unless it’s something you see every day, it’s something that’s really easy to separate yourself from,” Hottell commented during a presentation on the Trine campus on March 21.

Though not top of mind, the issue is real, Hottell said. Ten percent of Steuben County residents live in poverty as defined by the federal government, and 46% of students in the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County qualify for free and reduced lunches.

Through the poverty simulation, leaders determined that the most important issues to be addressed are transportation options, affordable housing and coordination of services between different agencies.

Ongoing conversations

Linda Conley, associate professor in the Ketner School of Business, said the idea of having Trine students assist with the effort began during ongoing conversations between faculty and the foundation.

“We have done projects with them in the past and they have hosted internships,” she said. “During one of those conversations, we learned about the poverty simulation.”

“Carmyn was saying how she wanted to take the feedback from the simulation and create more synergy around the community input,” said Olivia Lusher, Ed.D., associate professor. “Carmyn knew it was an interest of mine, and Linda asked me to be a faculty capstone mentor, so the interests just married each other.”

The capstone group consisted of Abigail Yeager, a marketing major from Butler, Indiana; Sara Schannen, a management major from Auburn, Indiana; Elias Sandholm, a management major from Third Lake, Illinois; and Abbie Bost, a sport management major from Chelsea, Michigan.

Yeager and Schannen said they were drawn to the project from having worked with non-profit agencies in DeKalb County.

Sandholm recently moved from Sweden to the United States, and said the project helped him gain an understanding of the differences between social systems in this nation, while Bost enjoyed the opportunity to work on “something bigger than just myself, something many of us aren't paying enough attention to.”

Measuring attitudes

The group was charged with creating a survey of county residents to measure attitudes toward the issue of poverty and potential solutions.

Lusher commented, “it required a lot of research to establish the methodology.”

They conducted extensive research of other counties and cities that had administered a community impact survey.

“We found survey examples from not only other cities, but also national agencies, like the National Aging and Disability Transport Center,” the group said in an email. “This research not only supplied us with what other organizations are asking, but also how to (or how to not) effectively lay it out.”

The group released the survey following approval from the university’s Institutional Review Board and will accept responses until 11:59 p.m. April 12.

Once the survey closes, the team will examine the responses and provide analysis and recommendations to the Steuben County Community Foundation in a research paper.

Lusher said she hopes the project will continue next fall with a new capstone group that will help bring the recommendations to life.
