Information About Academic Gowns

Academic gowns are descended from the cappa clausa (closed cloak) of the clergy who taught at early medieval universities and whose garments were recognizable as a distinctive scholastic fashion by the 14 th century. Reflecting the worldview of the Renaissance, academic gowns later began to be worn open and became more decorative, sewn from colorful fabric with fur or silk facings, embroidery, and distinctive long sleeves.

The 1895 Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume specified three types of gowns. Traditionally each gown was decorated with fluted fabric in the front, pleated fabric around the yoke, and a braided loop and button on the rear of the yoke that would help support the weight of the hood . Black was the color dictated by the Code, but by 1898 Cotrell & Leonard were providing customers with gowns that were blue, purple, dark green, gray, and white. These colored gowns were rare – black was the most popular choice for colleges and universities.

Bachelor’s Gown

The design of the American bachelor’s gown was based on the Oxford Bachelor of Arts gown.

According to the 1895 Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume, the gown would be tailored from black “worsted stuff” (usually a tightly woven wool/cotton blend) and would have long pointed sleeves. It was tailored from inexpensive fabric and worn closed in the front as a way of encouraging collegial uniformity and equality, hiding the clothing worn under the gown (the “ sub fusc ”) that would normally indicate differences in class, status, or wealth.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, college and university students would wear a bachelor’s gown to special events during their four years at school. At a few colleges they were worn to daily classes. At commencement undergraduates would receive a bachelor’s hood. Bachelor’s hoods were never very common – the expense was considered too great for a garment that would be worn only once. The Great Depression drove the final nail into that coffin, so today very few schools use bachelor’s hoods, and undergraduates commence in their bachelor’s gowns only.

Bachelor’s gowns are commonly used at American high schools and Junior Colleges. Instead of black, the gowns are tailored from fabric in one of the school colors of the high school (blue, maroon, gold, etc.), or in gray for Junior Colleges.

Master’s Gown

According to the Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume the master’s gown should be tailored from black silk and worn open. The wearer’s arms exited the sleeves at the elbow, and the end of the long closed sleeves had a crescent-shaped cutout at the rear of the sleeve that echoed the crescent-shaped cutout on the liripipe of the master’s hood. Some gown manufacturers placed this crescent-shaped cutout at the front of the sleeve.

The design of the American master’s gown was derived from the Master of Arts gown worn at Oxford University, except that Oxford’s sleeves have the crescent-shaped cutout at the front.

The sleeve design of the master’s gown required a jacket to be worn underneath, otherwise the wearer’s bare arms would show and create an awkward appearance. So in 1960 the American Council on Education’s Academic Costume Code moved the opening of the master’s sleeve from the elbow to the wrist and permitted the gown to be worn closed. The long sleeves now hang from the wrist and the crescent-shaped cutouts have lengthened to the entire front of the sleeve.

For historical reasons that can be traced to the medieval guilds, the Master of Fine Arts degree is unique among master’s degrees in that it is a terminal degree. Today the traditional master’s gown of the pre-1960s style is sometimes used by faculty with an MFA as a way to distinguish their terminal degree from standard (non-terminal) master’s degrees. This gown is combined with a doctoral hood and a mortarboard with a golden tassel.

Yale University authorizes the opposite – Masters of Fine Arts wear a doctoral gown with a master’s hood. This alternative approach is not recommended for the MFA because it creates an ensemble that is confusingly similar in appearance to the regalia worn by faculty with doctoral degrees.

Doctoral Gown

The basic shape of the American doctoral gown is based upon the doctoral gown used at Oxford University.

According to the Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume, the American doctor’s gown should be tailored from black silk and have black velvet facings and three black velvet bars on each of the large, bell-shaped sleeves. Like the master’s gown, the doctoral gown was worn open in front.

As an alternative to black velvet facings and sleeve bars, one could use colored velvet that matched the velvet Faculty color edging of one’s hood. This tended to be a popular option for professors with Faculty colors that were dark and did not create too much contrast with the black gown.

By 1898, a third option was to use black facings with the outer inch in the Faculty color and the sleeve bars divided half black/half Faculty color. This third option was not popular and few gowns with facings and sleeve bars divided in this style have survived.

When Princeton University adopted the Intercollegiate Code in late 1895 or early 1896, it stipulated that the doctoral sleeve bars would be about one inch in width and three inches apart. No specific length was cited; many early gowns have quite lengthy bars of as much as 18 inches. The university also described the velvet facings of the doctor’s gown as being three inches in width.

Most manufacturers used more generous dimensions. Doctoral gown facings were typically four to five inches in width, and sleeve bars were 1½ to two inches in width but had shortened to between 14 and 15 inches in length by the 1930s.

The earliest doctoral sleeve bars were squared-off at each end, but by 1898 the ends of the bars were often triangular in shape.

After 1960 the doctor’s gown was usually tailored to be worn closed in front – much to the discomfort of faculty in warmer climates.

Unique Gown Styles

Today, many colleges and universities have adopted “custom academic regalia”. This can mean specially designed doctoral gowns, as at Stanford University and Vanderbilt University , but more commonly this term refers to gowns tailored from fabric in the school colors of the institution. Can I customize my gown?

From Pre-K to High School/Bachelor regular gowns, we do not offer other colors than the ones listed on the website. If you are looking to order more than 1000pcs, please email us the Pantone color and we will get back to you.

If you need to add a logo or letters on regular gowns, please email us the specifications and we will get back to you with a quote and estimated delivery date. 

For Deluxe Bachelor, Master gowns, we do offer custom colors and embroidery with no minimum order required. Please email us what you are looking to order and we will provide you a quote. 

For Doctoral gowns, we offer a listing where you can customize your own gown. You can select your gown color, piping color, add embroidery, etc... If you do not see an option that you would like to add on your gown, please email us and we will check if we are able to process your request.

Can the year charm on the tassel be removed or changed?

Year Date Drops can easily be removed and reapplied yourself at home.

Can you help me with a mockup of the custom stole/gown/diploma cover I want to order?

Do you offer blank diploma?

Yes we do. Please check our stock diplomas for Kindergarten through High School.

Do you offer customization options for honor cords?

Do you offer different sizes for caps/tams/ beefeaters? Are they adjustable? What are they made of?

Our caps are made of 100% polyester. 

We provide caps in two sizes: Adult and Child.

They measure 9"x9".

The caps are not adjustable.

Do you offer plus sizes?

We do have regular and full-fit sizes. We have plus sizes in 45, 48, 54, 57, and 63. Please refer to the measuring instructions  link  for more information on our sizing.

We do not have full fit sizes in our child gowns. If you don't believe your graduate will fit within the child sizes, try a Size 39. You can find that size in High School Category. However, you may have to get the length hemmed at your cost.

How do I know what gown's color to choose?

Please contact your educational institution, as we currently do not have access to school colors.

How do I know which diploma cover to buy?

We recommend checking with your school which color and size to get or you can measure your diploma as well.

How do I select my hood's colors?

There is no standardized and unified published listing available of all current school colors.

While GraduationAttire does maintain a color chart for degree velvet colors there is no true substitute for contacting your school directly and asking them what colors they are currently using for your graduation apparel. Schools can and sometimes do change their colors on a yearly basis (and even the color of the gown itself).

The lining and chevron (satin fabric) represent your school colors. The shell is the material of hood which is always black (polyester fabric, matte finish). The velvet color represents your specific degree or field of study.

Please note for Associate Degree, you only need to select the lining and chevron colors (no velvet color required). 

You always need to choose the colors based on your highest level of education or current school you are attending.

How do I wear my hood?

Place it over your head draping off your shoulders and across the back of your gown. The velvet edge should be on the outside visible from the back. Make sure the lining (field and chevron school colors) are turned out so that people can see from the back your university colors. Usually this is done by turning the velvet trim to the outside at the back just below your shoulders. If you ordered a professional / faculty hood there will be a cord in the back (with two buttons one on each side of the hood) to keep your hood in place and a cord in the front to keep the hood away from your neck. Fasten the front cord to a shirt or dress button. Finally make sure the fabric shell of the hood is smoothed down and lays flat against the back of your robe. 

How to select my Graduation gown size?

You need to provide us with each customer's height with shoes on for the gown and weight. You do not need to provide cap size as our standard caps are one size fits all with elastic. Please see the our size chart . 

I don’t see the color I need. Do you provide any that aren’t listed?

You can email us the color that you need, we will get back to you with a closed match. 

We can color match some products if a bulk order is placed.

I lost my diploma, can I order one on the website?

Please contact your school directly for a copy of your diploma.

The color does not match my university regalia?

We do not color match. We have a very specific set of fabrics. We cannot guarantee that our fabric colors will match with another supplier’s fabrics.

What does debossed mean for diploma covers?

Debossing typically refers to the process of creating a raised or indented design on the surface of the cover. This is achieved by using a die (a metal or other hard material) to press the design into the material of the cover, creating a textured and visually appealing result.

What does piping mean for the gown/hood?

Piping is an embroidered thread around the velvet of a gown or hood.

What is the difference between matte and shiny?

The main difference is the finish of the fabric. Our shiny gowns are a knitted fabric that has more of a shiny look to it giving the color of the gowns more brightness. Our matte gowns are a woven fabric which has more of a flat dull finish. 

What if my school orders with a different company?

We welcome anyone to order with us! Although, we cannot give assurance or be held responsible for our gowns’ colours matching another company’s gowns. We provide unique shades of gowns are not the same with another vendor's products.

What is a double honor cord?

A double cord consists of two individual cords joined together at the center, with the knot positioned at the back of the graduate's neck.

What is a graduation honor cord?

A graduation honor cord is a decorative accessory worn by graduates during commencement ceremonies to signify academic achievements, honors, or affiliations. Honor cords are typically made of intertwined cords of various colors, and they are worn around the neck with the ends hanging down the front of the graduate's gown.

What is a jumbo tassel?

Jumbo bullion tassels, characterized by their increased thickness, are specifically employed on college tams. These tams often symbolize the field of study pursued by the student.

What is beefeater?

A beefeater, also referred to as a Tudor Bonnet, is a premium hat usually reserved for esteemed officials overseeing graduation ceremonies (deans, presidents, etc...). The standard mortarboard, a square of cardboard encased in polyester, is worn atop the head and traditionally used for primary and secondary school graduations. In contrast, tams are more commonly chosen for advanced graduations like Ed.S and doctoral ceremonies, and occasionally for master's degrees.

What is the difference between 4, 6 or 8 sided tam?

The level of education attained by the wearer is indicated by the varying number of sides on a tam. Master's graduates commonly wear four or six-sided tams, with the specific choice often determined by the school. It's advisable to verify the appropriate tam style before making a purchase. Tams with six sides are suitable for programs like Ed.S (education specialist) that fall between Master's and Ph.D. Eight-sided tams are typically reserved for Doctoral programs.

What is the difference between the Deluxe and the classic/matte gown?

Our Deluxe gowns have fluting around the shoulders and yoke. They have more fabric used so they tend to be heavier. This is true for all of our deluxe gowns. 

The deluxe master has a different shape for the batwings. 

The deluxe doctor has bell sleeves and a braided button to attach the hood whereas the classic does not.

We cannot do an embroidered chest emblem on the classic doctor. 

Overall, the deluxe is considered a higher quality gown for your regalia.

What is the material of your gowns? Washing Instructions?

Our gowns are all made of 100% polyester. Purely made polyester, like our products, is extremely strong, extremely durable and has excellent properties such as being hydrophobic in nature that leads to quick-drying and stain resistance.

We recommend dry cleaning for all of our products in order to keep the integrity of the garment. However, our products can be washed in a machine using the gentle cycle or handwashed. For drying, please hang dry. The material can be ironed on a low setting.

Why would I need a 4th Chevron on my doctorate gown?

The 4th Chevron is for the Chancellor or President of a University. If you are neither, do not select "Add 4th Chevron" to your doctorate gown.

I ordered a gown for the University of Notre Dame - since someone had done this previously, they already had the school emblems that go on the front panels. (If you're also at ND, you'll want to order the gown with embroidery, and 8-sided tam. I believe colors are royal blue and gold). I can't verify that the gown is identical to the official one because I live elsewhere and am not attending commencement, but it looks and feels great. Way better deal than going through the university. They can be a bit slow over email, but once they respond, customer service is excellent.

My gown fits perfectly - it is so nice and cozy! I am not really sure what the gowns provided by the university look/feel like, but this gown seems like it is high-quality!

These are excellent. The robe has buttons exactly where it is convenient for making everything hang properly. Love the pockets. I shopped for a long time to find the right doctoral gown and tam. I purchased the classic black gown with blue PhD velvet. Excellent quality. And the tam is perfect. Really, it is - I have a tam from another vendor, it cost the same, but nowhere nearly as nice as this one from PhinisheD - I'm tempted to wear it as a fall weather hat! Regarding the gown, this is a professional looking, faculty quality gown that can last decades of commencements and convocations, etc. If you aren't looking for wool or to spend more than $1,000, then I don't think you can get a better gown. We will ship to some foreign locations. Such locations generally include Canada, Europe, South America, Japan and a few other locations. We can also place the order over the phone if you do not find your country. However because such shipments often involve the peculiarities of the various tariffs trade and import/export laws around the globe we may not be able to ship some orders overseas due to the cost of researching the laws for that location. RETURN AND EXCHANGE POLICY 

If a return is accepted, due to COVID-19, it can only be used as store credit at this time or be used towards an exchange for another size or product. Any products that have been worn or used many not qualify for store credit. Due to COVID-19 it is not safe for customers and we are not able to resell any returned items. Any returns that fall within our usual return policy will be used as future store credit. 

All returns must be authorized through this link, please provide your order number and email address. 

All products and packaging must be in new original condition with unopened packages and original packing materials and may not be returned used, worn or altered in any way. No exceptions for return if the packages are opened or/and worn.

All shipping, handling and processing charges for your original order are non-refundable. It is the responsibility of the customer to pay any return/exchange shipping. Once we receive your exchange, we will give you a call to process the payment of the exchange shipping cost.

On all returned merchandise a 13% restocking fee will be applied.All returned product(s) must be returned/ received within 7 business days of return approval date. A delay will result in complete forfeiture of your return. 

Requests for returns must be made within 14 days from the date of receipt of your order.

Registered return shipping of products which are returned is the responsibility of the customer.Your return will be processed within 7-10 days. 

All custom items/apparel cannot be returned and are non-refundable, this is because these items are made from custom fabrics or have custom printing with your personal information, therefore cancellations are not accepted after your order has been submitted.

Requests to return/exchange products due to quality issue must be made within 14 days of delivery or we will not able to accept any return (received wrong item, color, size and other company error...), please send any evidence to [email protected], we will resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Products that are not eligible for returns are clearly marked as “On Sale” on the Product page for that Product. All products on sale are non-refundable, however can be exchanged for the same credit amount.

Frequently asked questions

What is the material of your gowns washing instructions.

Our gowns are all made of 100% polyester. Purely made polyester, like our products, is extremely strong, extremely durable and has excellent properties such as being hydrophobic in nature that leads to quick-drying and stain resistance.

We recommend dry cleaning for all of our products in order to keep the integrity of the garment. However, our products can be washed in a machine using the gentle cycle or handwashed. For drying, please hang dry. The material can be ironed on a low setting.

What is the difference between matte and shiny?

The main difference is the finish of the fabric. Our shiny gowns are a knitted fabric that has more of a shiny look to it giving the color of the gowns more brightness. Our matte gowns are a woven fabric which has more of a flat dull finish. 

How do I know what gown's color to choose?

Please contact your educational institution, as we currently do not have access to school colors.

What is the difference between the Deluxe and the classic/matte gown?

Our Deluxe gowns have fluting around the shoulders and yoke. They have more fabric used so they tend to be heavier. This is true for all of our deluxe gowns. 

The deluxe master has a different shape for the batwings. 

The deluxe doctor has bell sleeves and a braided button to attach the hood whereas the classic does not.

We cannot do an embroidered chest emblem on the classic doctor. 

Overall, the deluxe is considered a higher quality gown for your regalia.

What if my school orders with a different company?

We welcome anyone to order with us! Although, we cannot give assurance or be held responsible for our gowns’ colours matching another company’s gowns. We provide unique shades of gowns are not the same with another vendor's products.

The color does not match my university regalia?

We do not color match. We have a very specific set of fabrics. We cannot guarantee that our fabric colors will match with another supplier’s fabrics.

I don’t see the color I need. Do you provide any that aren’t listed?

You can email us the color that you need, we will get back to you with a closed match. 

We can color match some products if a bulk order is placed.

How to select my Graduation gown size?

You need to provide us with each customer's height with shoes on for the gown and weight. You do not need to provide cap size as our standard caps are one size fits all with elastic. Please see the our size chart . 

Do you offer plus sizes?

We do have regular and full-fit sizes. We have plus sizes in 45, 48, 51, 54, 57, and 63. Please refer to the measuring instructions link for more information on our sizing.

Can I customize my gown?

From Pre-K to High School/Bachelor regular gowns, we do not offer other colors than the ones listed on the website. If you are looking to order more than 1000pcs, please email us the Pantone color and we will get back to you.

If you need to add a logo or letters on regular gowns, please email us the specifications and we will get back to you with a quote and estimated delivery date. 

For Deluxe Bachelor, Master gowns, we do offer custom colors and embroidery with no minimum order required. Please email us what you are looking to order and we will provide you a quote. 

For Doctoral gowns, we offer a listing where you can customize your own gown. You can select your gown color, piping color, add embroidery, etc... If you do not see an option that you would like to add on your gown, please email us and we will check if we are able to process your request.

What does piping mean for the gown/hood?

Piping is an embroidered thread around the velvet of a gown or hood.

Why would I need a 4th Chevron on my doctorate gown?

The 4th Chevron is for the Chancellor or President of a University. If you are neither, do not select "Add 4th Chevron" to your doctorate gown.

How do I select my hood's colors?

There is no standardized and unified published listing available of all current school colors.

While GraduationAttire does maintain a color chart for degree velvet colors there is no true substitute for contacting your school directly and asking them what colors they are currently using for your graduation apparel. Schools can and sometimes do change their colors on a yearly basis (and even the color of the gown itself).

The lining and chevron (satin fabric) represent your school colors. The shell is the material of hood which is always black (polyester fabric, matte finish). The velvet color represents your specific degree or field of study.

Please note for Associate Degree, you only need to select the lining and chevron colors (no velvet color required). 

You always need to choose the colors based on your highest level of education or current school you are attending.

How do I wear my hood?

Place it over your head draping off your shoulders and across the back of your gown. The velvet edge should be on the outside visible from the back. Make sure the lining (field and chevron school colors) are turned out so that people can see from the back your university colors. Usually this is done by turning the velvet trim to the outside at the back just below your shoulders. If you ordered a professional / faculty hood there will be a cord in the back (with two buttons one on each side of the hood) to keep your hood in place and a cord in the front to keep the hood away from your neck. Fasten the front cord to a shirt or dress button. Finally make sure the fabric shell of the hood is smoothed down and lays flat against the back of your robe. 

Do you offer different sizes for caps/tams/ beefeaters? Are they adjustable? What are they made of?

Our caps are made of 100% polyester. 

We provide caps in two sizes: Adult and Child.

They measure 9"x9".

The caps are not adjustable.

What is the difference between 4, 6 or 8 sided tam?

The level of education attained by the wearer is indicated by the varying number of sides on a tam. Master's graduates commonly wear four or six-sided tams, with the specific choice often determined by the school. It's advisable to verify the appropriate tam style before making a purchase. Tams with six sides are suitable for programs like Ed.S (education specialist) that fall between Master's and Ph.D. Eight-sided tams are typically reserved for Doctoral programs.

What is beefeater?

A beefeater, also referred to as a Tudor Bonnet, is a premium hat usually reserved for esteemed officials overseeing graduation ceremonies (deans, presidents, etc...). The standard mortarboard, a square of cardboard encased in polyester, is worn atop the head and traditionally used for primary and secondary school graduations. In contrast, tams are more commonly chosen for advanced graduations like Ed.S and doctoral ceremonies, and occasionally for master's degrees.

Can I customize my diploma cover?

Yes, you can with a minimum order of 8 pcs. Please email us with the details of your diploma covers and we can provide you a quote and estimated delivery date.

What does debossed mean for diploma covers?

Debossing typically refers to the process of creating a raised or indented design on the surface of the cover. This is achieved by using a die (a metal or other hard material) to press the design into the material of the cover, creating a textured and visually appealing result.

In the case of diploma covers, debossing is often used to add a tactile and elegant element to the cover. It can be used to feature the school's emblem, logo, or other decorative elements. The debossed design is usually slightly indented into the material, providing a subtle and sophisticated look and feel to the diploma cover.

How do I know which diploma cover to buy?

We recommend checking with your school which color and size to get or you can measure your diploma as well.

Do you offer customized diplomas?

Yes, we offer customized options for diplomas with a minimum quantity of 100pcs. Please email us with the details and we will provide you a quote and estimated delivery date.

I lost my diploma, can I order one on the website?

Please contact your school directly for a copy of your diploma.

Do you offer blank diploma?

What is a graduation stole? Can I wear a stole for my graduation?

What is a graduation tassel?

What is a jumbo tassel?

Can the year charm on the tassel be removed or changed?

Year Date Drops can easily be removed and reapplied yourself at home.

What is a graduation honor cord?

Honor cords are typically made of intertwined cords of various colors, and they are worn around the neck with the ends hanging down the front of the graduate's gown.

What is a double honor cord?

Gowning achievement: A guide to academic regalia

Dating to the university's first graduating class of eight students in 1869, Cornellians, like most Western-trained academics, have sported tradition-rich togs to pick up their diplomas.

It flies against the provisions of subfusc (drab academic formality), yet flip-flops, T-shirts and shorts sometimes lurk beneath the somber black gowns worn at Commencement. Schoellkopf Stadium, after all, can be baking hot. But graduates and faculty members continue to pay homage to tradition by donning robes derived from the cassocks medieval European clerics wore to teach at Oxford, Heidelberg or the Sorbonne.

From tassels to tams, academic regalia indicate status and tell the story of the wearer's field of study, honors acquired or cultural affiliation. And Commencement is one of the few occasions when one can reasonably break out his or her mortarboard or bonnet; hood or tassel; gowns of gabardine and velvet decorated with chevrons; stoles or aiguillettes.

From the colonial era through the outbreak of the Civil War, American students wore academic gowns to class. (Gowns are still worn at Sewanee, The University of the South, in Tennessee). In 1932 and 1959 a committee appointed by the American Council on Education codified the academic dress code followed by most schools. The Ivies follow most of the rules, although Cornell Ph.D. gowns are red instead of the traditional black.

At Cornell, the tassel color represents the graduate's college or major: Agriculture and Life Sciences, maize; Architecture, Art and Planning -- blue-violet (architecture), brown (fine arts); teal (planning); Arts and Sciences, white; Engineering, orange; Hotel Administration, red; Human Ecology, maroon; and Industrial Labor and Relations, orange-yellow.

Hoods are accorded those earning graduate degrees, and their color represents the degree. Even the sleeves of academic garb convey meaning. Doctoral gowns have bell sleeves with velvet chevrons; master's have oblong sleeves with wrist openings; and bachelor's gowns have open sleeves. Members of the faculty don the academic regalia of the institutions from which they graduated. And when you factor in those schools around the world, each with its own color schemes and traditions, you can envision the colorful plumage lining the Arts Quad as graduates march to Schoellkopf Stadium.

When the tailors and designers at Academic evaluated our interpretation of this ageless design, we decided to provide only one version, the finest. This is a faculty-quality gown intended for long-term use.

Offset plackets for our solid brass zippers, french seams where the sleeves meet the body, yokes constructed using genuine Pellon ®, cord trim around each velvet bar and velvet front panel.

This gown is made in one of two fabrics (your choice): Seville or Islander.

Seville Fabric has a history of about 20 years for academic regalia. Made by one of the largest mills in the USA with VISA anti stain protection. The weave is a gabardine, which provides for a very strong structure, and has excellent wrinkle resistance. It also tends to be somewhat cooler than Islander. Constructed from 100% polyester this fabric can also be washed in an emergency. Like Islander however, the velvet panels are not washable and eventually your robe must be dry-cleaned.

Islander fabric has a history of over 30 years for academic regalia. Imported, 100% Polyester crepe weave with excellent wrinkle resistance and long life. The weave is strong enough to prevent sagging with the weight of velvet bars or front panels, which translates into a longer life for the robe. Polyester provides the important feature of wash-ability, if you accidentally spill coffee or a get bit of frosting on the fabric portion of your robe, saving on extra cleaning. The velvet portion of is not washable and must be dry-cleaned. Islander is slightly more expensive than Seville.

Please include the following information:

1. Confirmation Swatches. We can send you fabric swatch samples of the fabrics and colors used prior to making your gown, on request and for a small fee. The default indicates you do not need such swatches.

2. Cord Trim. We provide (at no additional charge) cord trim around the velvet bars and front panels. The standard gown comes with black cord trim. If you prefer a different color, you can choose your degree and/or discipline color.

3. Fabric Type: Either Seville or Islander (as described above).

4. Fabric Color. The standard fabric is black, but a few schools use a different fabric color. If you need a different color, please include it in the comments (and we will contact you regarding availability).

5. Height. Please do not wear shoes for this measurement.

6. Lettering Type: If you would like, we can embroider your name or initials in your gown free of charge. If you would like to take advantage of this option, choose your lettering type (block or script), and include up to 27 characters in the comments section as “Embroidery: [Your Name or Initials]”.

7. Sleeve Length. Please measure your sleeve length to the nearest inch. Sleeve length is measured using a standard measuring tape, starting at the nape of the neck (the bone at the botton back of your neck). Measure over to the tip of one shoulder, and then down to the wrist of that arm, all with your arm flat to your side. Please view our Doctoral Sleeve Measurement Graphic for instructions.

8. Suit or Dress Size. If you do not know your size, just use Unknown, and make sure you list your specific weight in the comments section.

9. Velvet Color. The standard gown comes with black velvet bars and front panels. If you prefer a different color, you can choose your degree and/or discipline color.

10. Approximate Weight. Enter your best estimate of your current weight within 10 pounds.

Quantity discounts apply for orders of 2 or more gowns, as indicated in the upper right hand corner chart.

Production times vary depending on the time of the year. During checkout, the current standard production time will be presented to you, and you will be given the opportunity to choose a rush order fee to speed your order up.

Production time is a measure of weeks from the date we first process your order to the date we are ready to ship you order, and does not include the time it takes to ship your order to you. You will also be given an opportunity to pay to speed up your shipping time as well during the checkout phase of your order.

If you have any doubts about when you need it to arrive, we strongly urge you to choose the faster rush option and/or shipping option.

Online orders are processed only Tues – Fri (except holidays) from 9am to 3:30pm pacific time, and only those days and hours can count as an order placement date. Orders placed outside of these days or times will be processed on the next available order processing day. Please indicate your graduation date in the comment section of your order, and we will try to accommodate your date.
