This study aims to determine the approaches, strategies, methods, and techniques used in quasi-experimental theses and/or dissertations related to teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The documents examined in this study were retrieved from the Council of Higher Education Thesis Centre database. The keywords "Turkish for foreigners" and "Turkish as a foreign language" were used in the database search. As a result of the database search, a total of 50 quasi-experimental theses or dissertations that included information about the approaches, strategies, methods, and techniques were accessed. The basic qualitative research design was employed in the study. The examined documents were limited to those conducted between 2008 and 2020. The document analysis method was used to collect data. Using descriptive analysis, the data were classified based on the subproblems. It was determined that there were differences in the distribution of approaches, strategies, methods, and techniques in theses and/or dissertations related to teaching Turkish as a foreign language and that most studies were carried out on teaching techniques. In addition, it was found that most of the applications in the theses and/or dissertations were for the independent user level and that the researchers mostly preferred the areas of writing skills and vocabulary in their applications. Another finding of this study is that attributing equal importance to four basic language skills, the number of experimental studies on teaching Turkish as a foreign language has been increasing.

In this state-of-the-art review, we aim to build on Alptekin & Tatar's (2011) article covering research conducted in Turkey between 2005 and 2009, and survey published research in 31 Turkey-based journals between 2010 and 2016. As the second review paper on Turkey's English language teaching (ELT) agenda, our goal is twofold: first, to introduce the research of those researchers whose high-quality, Turkey-based work may not be known outside Turkish academia; and second, to point to recent scholarly developments that have occurred in Turkey and set these in the context of recent shifts in language teaching research worldwide. This paper presents approximately 140 articles that appeared in locally published peer-reviewed academic journals, and clearly demonstrates that Turkey as an English as a foreign language (EFL) context presents a vibrant research scene in language teaching. The reviewed works cover a wide spectrum of timely topics (e.g., computer-assisted language learning (CALL), the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL), language assessment, affective factors), and present findings that have much to contribute to current discussions in the field. Nevertheless, our review also reveals some concerning trends, including an almost exclusive emphasis on practical concerns over conceptual development; shortcomings in locating research within broader disciplinary debates; and few efforts to bring together and build on local research in a manner that might allow for original and creative influences on the broader discipline. It is therefore the further aim of this article to spark debates on these issues among Turkish scholars and contribute to the strengthening of the local disciplinary community.

Mehmet Asmali

English language teaching (henceforth ELT) has always been criticized due to the performance of Turkey in global English proficiency indices and students' lack of speaking ability. Despite several attempts to change language teaching programs, it cannot be claimed that the situation has transformed. ELT programs and students studying in these programs as one of the major elements of language teaching and learning issues in the country have been investigated in this study. The statistics regarding ELT programs and ELT students between the years 2016 and 2019 have been taken from YÖK Atlas, an online platform launched by the Council of Higher Education. The statistical data taken from this platform were analyzed, taking students' gender, educational background, university preferences, and foreign language test mean scores as well as ELT programs' academic staff, performance in exchange programs, and students' program preference statistics into account. The statistics indicated the dominance of female students and relatively low English proficiency of the students in ELT programs. Assistant professors were found to be the leading academic staff in these programs. Moreover, ELT students' preferences with regard to geographical proximity and availability of student exchange programs have been provided in the findings. Finally, some potential future research topics have been suggested.

Program description.

The Ph.D. program in English Literature is designed to educate students as researchers in the field of English Literature. Our courses are designed to provide students with a thorough and critical knowledge of English literature from the Middle Ages to the present and with a critical perspective on world literature. Our program aims to enable students to identify major literary and cultural theories from classical antiquity to the twenty first century and to articulate ideas and responses against the backdrop of these theories. Upon graduation, our Ph.D. students should be able to contribute to the field of literary studies by producing academic papers built on independent and in-depth research.

The graduates of our Ph.D. program in English literature can work as academics in Humanities and Social Sciences Departments of various universities. They can also work as cultural analysts in national and international research institutions. Some of our graduates work as cultural researchers and consultants in public and international relations departments of national and international companies and institutions.
