PhD Curriculum Plan

  • PhD in Social Work

The fulltime PhD in Social Work program typically takes four years. Each student is assigned a faculty mentor with similar research interests. Students spend two years gaining research skills, then two years conducting independent scholarly research.

Second Year

Fourth year, university-wide policy on dissertation submission requirements.

Management of dissertations at Boston College is online-only. The public dissemination of research fits with university social justice values supporting global access to scholarship. The University policy with regard to dissertations is as follows:

All final dissertations must be submitted and published online through ProQuest/UMI, as well as BC’s open access institutional repository, by the University required deadline.

The ProQuest ETD Administrator system is used for student submission, school administration approval, and library management of the process, as it is at the vast majority of Carnegie Tier 1 schools. BC also supports an institutional repository (IR) as its system of record, in which we are legally obligated to preserve all dissertations, and where materials are made available Open Access online according to Creative Commons licensing of the student’s choosing. For both repositories, embargoes may be placed for up to two years. Embargoes can be extended up to five years with school approval. Each system carries its own set of licenses, terms and options (e.g. ProQuest license, BC IR license.)

Exceptions to the requirement to submit digitally will be based on decisions made by individual schools or by the Provost. BC Libraries provide support, instruction, and infrastructure to enable the collection, approval, description, security, access and preservation of all Boston College dissertations and theses.

PHD, Social Work

The PhD program produces scholars who work interdisciplinarily through epistemologically diverse, research-intensive study and prepares future social work educators through instruction in sound pedagogical practice and mentored experiential learning.

Degree Type: Doctoral

Degree Program Code: PHD_SOWK

Degree Program Summary:

The University of Georgia PhD Program in Social Work provides the professional social worker the opportunity to gain advanced training in scientific research and program evaluation skills, for the purposes of developing knowledge that promotes social justice. The mission of the PhD Program draws upon two important areas of concern to the profession of social work: evidence-based knowledge about human behavior and social problems, and the applications of such knowledge through practice. Recognizing that MSW education is designed to prepare practitioners for our field, the emphasis of the PhD Program is upon the development and dissemination of evidence-based knowledge to undergird effective practice throughout the profession.

The Ph.D. Program at the UGA School of Social Work began in 1990 and has produced over 90 graduates, most of whom have gone on to assume academic, research or administrative positions. The program prepares social work professionals for careers in academic research settings and for practice in program evaluation and other forms of scientific research in the public and private sectors. The overall goals are to help students acquire the research skills necessary to develop original research studies that have direct applications to social work practice. In addition, we emphasize learning about teaching so that our graduates are able to provide quality instruction to the next generation of social work students.

Curriculum:

The Ph.D. curriculum is a series of required research courses, two research practica, other courses in the School of Social Work, three courses in statistics and advised cognates taken outside the School. Ph.D. students also sign up for course hours that match the following events: Comprehensive Examinations, Prospectus Defense, and Dissertation Defense. While there has been great variance in the length of time needed to finish the program, future full-time students should plan to complete the Ph.D. Program in 3-4 years. We also offer a part-time option that uses individual advisement to plan the student’s program of study.

About the PhD in Social and Behavioral Sciences Program

The PhD program in Social and Behavioral Sciences is designed for individuals seeking training for careers as social and behavioral scientists, health educators, and health promotion or communication specialists in the public health arena. The curriculum centers on the application of social and behavioral science perspectives to research on contemporary health problems, with a focus on understanding and influencing the social contexts and behaviors relevant to health. In addition to coursework, students complete a written exam at the end of the first year and gain experience in research skills and approaches. With faculty guidance, students develop and present a dissertation protocol in an oral exam. The final dissertation defense is conducted as an oral exam that includes a public seminar.

The program provides rigorous training in research methodology, theory, and program design and evaluation. Research is primarily focused in two areas—health education and communication, and social and psychological influences on health.

Research Areas

The emphasis of the curriculum is on the application of behavioral and social science perspectives to research on contemporary health problems. Understanding and influencing health behaviors that are risk factors in disease and illness, as well as behaviors that can be considered protective and health enhancing, are strengths of the program.

Rigorous training in research methods and program design and evaluation are also key elements of the curriculum. The program focuses its research in the following areas.

This area focuses on the application of principles from education, communication, behavioral, social science and psychological theories to encourage health behaviors conducive to optimal health in individuals, groups and communities. Students are exposed to current research on health education and communication, with particular focus on multilevel, ecological models of health and health behavior, design and evaluation of multifaceted intervention programs and patient-provider communication.

This area focuses on social and psychological factors and processes in the etiology and prevalence of disease in health-care-seeking behavior, disease prevention, long-term care and rehabilitation. Students are exposed to current research on health knowledge, attitudes and beliefs; social and psychological factors in disease etiology; risk reduction; and cultural influences in public health, including cross-cultural and multilevel studies.

PhD in Social Work

Preparing the next generation of social work and social welfare scholars and leaders.

Our students develop core competencies that are integral to contemporary social work practice, teaching, and research. The critical linkages between social work and social science research, theory, and practice build upon our faculty  strengths and expertise, and grow through interdisciplinary collaborations and expertise in areas such as health, mental health, trauma, addictions, child welfare, and aging. The PhD in Social Work program offers an opportunity for students to work with, and learn from, these leaders and to pursue a multi-method and highly individualized course of study.

The core curriculum requires a mixed methods foundation, grounding in social work values and a social justice lens, and training in teaching excellence. Student knowledge is deepened through hands-on teaching-practicum experience, the development of a specialization area, and mentored research training. These integrated experiences provide a rich educational foundation for social work leadership in academic, policy, research, and practice arenas.

Please Note: The PhD Program in Social Work no longer requires that applicants take the GRE or MAT exams.

For further information about the PhD program, request information below or contact Daniel P. Miller , Director of the PhD Program in Social Work, at [email protected] .

Welcome Prospective PhD Students

We appreciate your interest in the PhD program at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. We invite applications from diverse, bright and passionate individuals who are committed to a high level of achievement in their academic, personal and professional lives.

Our program is considered one of the best in the United States in preparing scholars for advanced research careers in social work. As such, the PhD candidate selection process is rigorous, reflecting our emphasis on academic achievement, initiative and motivation. Our goal is to make students competitive for the best available positions here and abroad.

What are the basic requirements for admission to the doctoral program? Candidates must have a master’s degree in social work or related field, excellent undergraduate and graduate academic records, and participation in independent research. International applicants must also have a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

What materials are required for the PhD application? All applicants must submit a Graduate Admission Application , statement of purpose, resume, transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended, four letters of recommendation, TOEFL scores (international students only), evidence of financial support (international students only), PhD information form, PhD career plans and goals form, and scholarly writing sample. Further admissions information and downloadable admissions materials may be found in our Application Process section.

Is a Master of Social Work (MSW) required for admission to the doctoral program? A Master of Social Work (MSW) is strongly encouraged for potential applicants because it shows a thorough understanding of the field of social work. However, we will also consider a master’s degree from a related field (sociology, psychology, etc.). Applicants without a master’s degree can apply to the school’s MSW program.

Do you offer the PhD program online? No, the PhD program is not offered online. You must be a full-time student at the University Park Campus.

Does the doctoral program accept transfer students? On the rare occasion that we accept transfer students from another doctoral program, their applications are reviewed by the doctoral committee on a case-by-case basis. All transfer students must apply through regular admission to the PhD program. Each transfer student application is then individually reviewed to evaluate courses already taken and determine a possible course of action. The transfer of post-master’s degree doctoral course work from another institution will only be considered if a grade of B or higher (A=4.0) has been obtained, and the course has been completed within the last five years. Transfer of credits must be petitioned and approved by both the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and the graduate school. For complete transfer credit information, please refer to the USC Catalogue .

TOEFL test scores (for international applicants only) must be taken within two years of the application deadline.

Do you accept part-time students? Due to the rigorous and demanding requirements of the doctoral program, we do not accept part-time students. Students are required to be full-time on the University Park Campus.

Who is required to take the TOEFL? All international applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), with the exception of applicants who earned both their bachelor’s and master's degrees in the United States.

University of Utah announces major funding for new addiction treatment research

Media contact:.

Patricia Brandt Manager, Public Relations and Communications, Huntsman Mental Health Institute University of Utah Health Email: Patricia.Brandt @hsc.utah.edu

Salt Lake City (April 10, 2024) - Worldwide, someone dies from drug or alcohol addiction every four minutes. Now, researchers at Huntsman Mental Health Institute at the University of Utah have been selected by Wellcome Leap to research a new treatment for substance use disorder as part of a $50 million commitment to develop innovative treatments.

Dr.'s Mickey, Kubanek, Webb, Garland, Jawish, Koppelmans, and Riis

Brian J. Mickey, MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry at Huntsman Mental Health Institute (pictured top left), will lead the team of investigators with expertise in psychiatry, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, radiology, and social work to research a new, noninvasive treatment for addiction. Co-principal investigators include Jan Kubanek, PhD , (pictured top center), and Taylor Webb, PhD (pictured top right); co-investigators include (from left to right) Eric Garland, PhD, LCSW ; Rana Jawish, MD ; Vincent Koppelmans, PhD ; and Tom Riis, PhD.

The research will be funded by the Untangling Addiction program, which is a $50 million program founded by Wellcome Leap , to develop scalable measures to assess addiction susceptibility, quantify the risks stemming from addiction, and develop innovative treatments.

“Substance use disorder is a significant global health problem, and yet the treatment options are limited,” Mickey said.  “We’re developing a non-invasive intervention for preventing and treating addiction, chronic pain, and depression. This funding will help us validate and generate the data to support the next critical step: an efficacy trial to determine the effectiveness of the intervention.”

Mickey’s team will use a novel ultrasound-based device to modulate deep brain regions and behaviors associated with opioid addiction. The goal will be to ultimately develop this approach into an individually targeted therapeutic intervention for a range of addictions. “Addictions are brain illnesses that have enormous negative impact on individuals, families, and society,” Mickey said. “A major reason that addictions have been difficult to prevent—and treat—is that they are driven by dysfunction of deep brain regions that are challenging to access. Many psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, and addiction are caused by malfunction of brain circuits. This project is an example of our mission to understand how these neural circuits are dysregulated and to develop novel, circuit-targeted interventions that return the brain to a healthy state.”

"We are proud to bring Wellcome Leap's innovative problem-solving and funding approach to our research enterprise at the University of Utah," said Taylor Randall, President , University of Utah. "To have our mental health researchers contributing to pioneering work on addiction treatment reaffirms our commitment to improving lives through discovery."

“What makes research like this so impactful is that it brings together a variety of disciplines to help solve complex problems in mental health,” said Mark Hyman Rapaport, MD , CEO of Huntsman Mental Health Institute. “This is particularly timely news given the groundbreaking of a new translational research building on campus focused on mental health and the brain. Our nation is in a mental health crisis, but there is hope if we can think differently and work together to change this trajectory.”

SUNY funding to boost mental health services at UB

'embedded' counselors to join the school of social work and other academic units this summer.

Published April 11, 2024

UB is expanding mental health support for students, which includes the hiring of several new “embedded” counselors and broadening virtual or teletherapy services.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced new state funding for mental health support across SUNY campuses, including $1 million at UB.

“College can be a stressful and overwhelming time and this funding will expand mental health services on college campuses so students can focus on just being students,” the governor said in a statement.

UB will use the bulk of its funding, which is recurring, to hire seven counselors. Each will be embedded within one of seven academic units: the schools of Management, Social Work, Nursing, Public Health and Health Professions, and Architecture and Planning; the Graduate School of Education; and the College of Arts and Sciences.

“Student health and wellness is a significant priority at the University at Buffalo,” says Brian Hamluk, vice president for student life. “Prioritizing embedded counselors and other mental health-related services underscores our continued commitment to the well-being of our students, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to thrive both academically and personally here at UB.”

The seven new hires will start over the summer, bringing the total number of counselors on campus to 31, says Sharon Mitchell, senior director of student wellness and director of counseling services.

“The biggest thing is the accessibility,” Mitchell says of embedded counselors. “It’s just more convenient if you don’t have to add travel time to get to and from your appointment.

“Also, it reduces stigma because it normalizes seeking help,” Mitchell says. “There’s an academic adviser in the building. There’s a success coach in the building. Now, there’s a mental health counselor in the building. These are all resources that could be of help to students.”

The Embedded Counselor Program, which recently won an award at the national conference of student affairs administrators, started at UB in 2017 with an embedded counselor in athletics. Since then, the program has added an embedded counselor in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; the School of Law, Dental Medicine, Engineering and Applied Sciences, and most recently, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Now, with these new hirings, a counselor will be embedded within each academic unit.

“They primarily provide individual counseling,” Mitchell says. “However, we also do outreach.

“For example,” she says, “if the medical school has exams, maybe we offer an educational workshop on managing stress. What’s nice is that we can tailor the programming specifically for students of a particular academic community.”

During the five-year period prior to the pandemic, Counseling Services saw a 43% increase in the number of students seeking mental health services and a 29% increase in the number of attended counseling sessions.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, students have requested more support on campus for their mental health.

To make an appointment with Counseling Services, students can call 716-645-2720.

In addition to the seven new counselors, the new funding will pay for:

  • Expanded teletherapy services . Counseling Services will contract with a professionally licensed vendor to provide services online or over the phone. This makes counseling more accessible and convenient for students who need services outside regular business hours.

“Even though we will have more counselors we are only open until 7 p.m. two nights a week,” Mitchell says. “The teletherapy services will allow us to provide services for students whose schedules just can’t fit into that or who might do a round of treatment with us but need additional care.”

  • A financial well-being program coordinator . UB students have reported that finances are among their biggest stressors and a primary factor in their academic success and retention. A financial wellness coordinator can help them with financial literacy and developing a financial plan, while guiding them toward available resources.
  • A sexual and reproductive health nurse educator . Students have requested more support regarding their reproductive health, contraception and sexually transmitted infections. This position would provide students with both clinical and educational services.
  • Four graduate assistants. The four new positions will increase capacity for both clinical and educational programming.
  • Trauma, illness and grief training . This training, open to staff and faculty, would help grow the emotional support of the campus beyond what mental health counselors can provide during the aftermath of a traumatic experience.
