2025-2026 Competition Deadline: Tuesday October 8, 2024 at 5 pm Eastern Time

For any eligibility questions or concerns not answered in the sections below, please reach out to [email protected] for guidance.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America at the time of the application deadline. Permanent residents are not eligible. Please review the specific Award Description in relation to the eligibility of dual citizens.
  • In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional training and/or experience meets the basic eligibility requirement. If you are an Arts applicant and do not hold a BA, please email [email protected] with your professional experience and educational history to confirm eligibility before beginning an application.
  • Applicants must meet the language requirements of the award to which they are applying and demonstrate sufficient competency to complete their project and adjust to life in the host country.
  • Applicants may hold a J.D. at the time of application.
  • Doctors of Medicine may receive grants for advanced academic study, but not for internships or residencies. Scholars with an M.D. degree who have completed their formal postgraduate training and propose attachment to a hospital or clinic for the purpose of independent or collaborative research should apply to the  Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program . Grants shall not authorize activity for which a license to practice medicine or nursing is required. The Fulbright Program cannot authorize proposals for medical research that involves clinical training, patient care or patient contact.
  • In general, there is a program preference for those who have not previously held a Fulbright grant. For the 2025-2026 competition, 2024-2025, 2023-2024, and 2022-2023 grantees will be at a competitive disadvantage, but are still eligible to apply, provided they continue to meet all other eligibility requirements of the program and their chosen award.
  • Preference will be given to applicants whose higher education was undertaken primarily at educational institutions in the United States. Undergraduate study abroad experiences, either in the chosen host country or elsewhere, will not be considered a disadvantage.
  • Candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months, not counting undergraduate study abroad, are preferred. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section.
  • Candidates who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States will be given preference, provided their qualifications are approximately equivalent to those of other candidates.
  • For most programs, applicants who have had extensive, recent previous experience in the host country are at a competitive disadvantage but are still eligible to apply.

Ineligibility

The following are not eligible for consideration:

  • For purposes of this section, the one-year period of ineligibility is calculated from the date of termination of employment, service, or association until the due date for submission of applications for program.
  •  Employees of the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development. This provision includes all employees, paid or unpaid (including part-time or temporary employees, consultants, externs, fellows and contract employees). This provision does not apply to interns.
  • Employees of private and public agencies (excluding educational institutions) under contract to the U.S. Department of State to perform administrative or screening services on behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s exchange programs.
  • Officers of an organization, in the United States or abroad, including members of boards of trustees or similar governing bodies, or individuals otherwise associated with the organization, wherein the organization and the individuals are responsible for nominating or selecting individuals for participation in any exchange program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
  • Board members or staff of a Fulbright Commission.
  • Members of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
  • If you are unsure if you fall into one of the above categories, please email [email protected] with details of your employment, including start and/or end dates and nature of your job responsibilities, to confirm eligibility for the program.
  • Applicants who currently hold or will hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) by the national application deadline.
  • Applicants seeking enrollment in a medical degree program abroad.
  • If you are unsure of your eligibility in regards to your time spent abroad, please email [email protected] with details of your time both in and outside of the U.S. within the past six years to confirm your eligibility to apply.
  • In some cases, it may not be feasible for a dual national to participate in a Fulbright program in the country of their other nationality due to host country law or policy. Therefore, it is the applicant’s responsibility to ascertain whether they have, or are eligible to have, their host country’s nationality and to address any potential consequences thereof before they accept an award. Please refer to the country’s award description to determine the eligibility of dual nationals.
  • For most grants, applicants who have had extensive previous experience abroad are at a competitive disadvantage but are not necessarily disqualified for that reason. However, following the policy of the relevant binational Fulbright Commission or the U.S. Embassy in the host country, some countries will not consider applicants who are currently residing in or will be residing in that country during the year preceding the grant. Please refer to the country’s award description to determine if residency in the host country in the year prior to the grant is allowed.

Other Factors Affecting Eligibility

  • Candidates may not apply to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and the Fulbright Scholar Program in the same competition cycle.
  • Candidates may not apply for more than one Fulbright U.S. Student grant in each competition cycle.

Diversity Policy

  • The Fulbright Grants described on this website are subject to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which provide that no citizen of the United States may, on the grounds of race, sex, color, religion, age, national origin, or disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
  • Fulbright Diversity Statement:  The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the United States Department of State strives to embed diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in all aspects of its work. Public diplomacy is most effective when people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives participate in people-to-people exchanges and programs to promote mutual understanding. The Bureau incorporates DEIA best practices throughout its exchanges and programs, grants, community partnerships, and in its workforce and workplace. ECA is committed to addressing barriers based on race, ethnicity, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, geographic location, education, income, socio-economic status, and other diversity dimensions, that may hinder inclusion in the organization. The Bureau’s commitment to DEIA strengthens U.S. foreign policy and is vital to building trust and partnerships here at home and around the world.

Special announcement

General faq: daad scholarships & grants.

Question marks.

We know the application process may seem overwhelming in the beginning. To help you, we have collected some of the most frequently asked questions on our scholarships and the application processes.

A. Scholarship Application Requirements

1. Is there an age limit for DAAD scholarships? No, there is usually no fixed age limit. There are individual exceptions in programs in which this is explicitly requested by an international partner. Some scholarship programs stipulate that only a certain amount of time should have elapsed since the last degree was taken (see also question 2). For details, please refer to the respective Call for Applications at www.funding-guide.de under the heading “Application requirements.”

2. I finished my university degree or started my doctorate longer ago than the application requirements specify. Am I still eligible to apply? Yes, an application may be permissible under the following circumstances which may have a delaying effect on studies or doctoral projects:

  • pregnancy and childbirth
  • care of children up to the age of 12 (maximum of three years per child)
  • care of care-dependent relatives
  • disability or chronic illness
  • prolonged, serious illness
  • compulsory military service
  • if applicable, other circumstances.

The dates of birth of children and periods of childcare or care of relatives or longer periods of absence due to illness or disability should be indicated in the application form; the last free text field “Other comments / Information” is available for this purpose. DAAD reserves the right to ask you to submit appropriate supporting documents.

Proof of disabilities or illnesses can be provided in the form of a disability card or medical certificate. If possible, the medical certificate should indicate the periods of absence.

Information about studying abroad with a disability or chronic illness is provided in the following:  Mobility with a Disability .

Other circumstances must also be justified and substantiated with supporting documents.

3. I have not completed my university degree at the time of application. Am I still eligible to apply for a scholarship? Yes, in programs which require a first university degree, you can apply in your last year of study. You must then meet all the academic requirements set out in the Call for Applications by the time your funding period begins. Also, you can hand in your degree later; it must be submitted before the start of the funding period.

4. I’m already in Germany. Am I still eligible to apply? Yes, if you have been in Germany for a maximum of 15 months by the time of the application and if the call for applications does not stipulate any other conditions.

5. I am not currently living in my country of origin. Am I still eligible to apply for a scholarship? An application from your current country of residence is possible under certain circumstances:

  • If you wish to apply for a short-term scholarship (up to 6 months), you must have lived and have been normal resident in your country of residence for at least one year at the time of application.
  • If you would like to come to Germany for more than 6 months, you must also have obtained your last degree (e.g. Bachelor or Master) in your country of residence or obtain this degree by the time the scholarship period begins.

In any case, you can apply from your country of origin, even if you currently live in another country and meet the above requirements. Your country of origin is usually the country in which you have spent most of your life and may differ from your nationality.

We strongly recommend that you seek information and advice to find out which scholarship programs are available to you. If you are unsure about your eligibility, please contact us at daad.newyork [at] daad.de.

6. I have dual citizenship. From which country should I apply? Dual nationals must apply from their country of origin (usually the country where you have spent most of your life). If the requirements are met, an application from the current country of residence is also possible, as described above (A.5). Nationality alone does not entitle you to apply from a country you have never lived in and are not currently living in.

7. I am enrolled in a study program at a German university and aim to complete this degree in Germany, or I am completing a doctoral degree at a German university. Can I apply for a DAAD scholarship abroad?

Under certain conditions, foreign nationals may also apply for funding programs abroad

  • You are enrolled in a study program at a German university with the aim of obtaining a degree from the German university, or
  • You are doing your doctorate at a German university

and want do go abroad during this time. This regulation does not apply to international students/doctoral candidates who are already being funded with an “Incoming DAAD scholarship” in Germany.

In addition, persons of equal status to Germans according to § 8 Para. 1 Number 2ff. Paragraph 2, Paragraph 2a, and Paragraph 3 BAföG can apply. In this context, the wording of the law applies, which can be found  here .

Furthermore, it is checked to what extent there is a connection to Germany and whether there is a justified expectation that you will return to Germany after the end of the temporary stay abroad.

A funding in your home country is usually excluded.

Programs for funding abroad for students in Germany are listed in our scholarship database  www.auslands-stipendien.de .

8. Can I apply for a scholarship whatever subject I am studying? Principally yes: DAAD offers many scholarship programs that are open to almost all subjects, although restrictions apply to some subjects (e.g. medicine). There are also subject-specific programs that are aimed at very specific subject areas, such as architecture, music or computer science. In the scholarship database, you can select the scholarships programs that are offered for your subject group.

9. What language skills do I need to apply for a scholarship? Not all programs require a general minimum language level for funding applications. Depending on country of origin and scholarship program, however, certain language skills may be expected. You can find out which requirements these are in the “Application requirements” section of the Call for Applications. Please read these requirements thoroughly to find out what applies to your program.

For scholarships in Germany, however, the following generally applies: when you submit your application, you must provide proof of your current proficiency in the language of instruction (German, English, or German and English) in your chosen study program.

Students from the United States and Canada are not required to demonstrate English language proficiency.

If you would like to assess your German language skills yourself, you can take the free placement tests of e.g.  Deutsche Welle or the  Goethe-Institut.

10. My German language skills are not yet sufficient. Are there e-learning language courses that I can take in my home country to improve my skills? Yes, you can learn German in online courses. For example, the  Goethe-Institut  as well as  Deutsche-Uni Online (DUO) offer special online courses in German. For scholarship holders whose funding lasts longer than six months, DAAD will pay the costs of one DUO module.

Furthermore, you can find a wide range of free online content for learning German on Deutsche Welle at https://learngerman.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-9528

11. I am considering online/distance/part-time studies in Germany. Am I eligible for a DAAD scholarship? No, DAAD scholarships are awarded to applicants wishing to complete a full-time course of study with compulsory attendance in Germany. This is why applicants wishing to take a blended learning or distance/e-learning program or part-time program (e.g. dual course of study) are not eligible for DAAD funding.

12. I already have a scholarship from the European Union, the DAAD, or another organization in Germany. Can I still receive a DAAD scholarship? If you are already funded by DAAD, another German funding organization or another state agency in Germany, you cannot receive a scholarship from DAAD.

An Erasmus scholarship is not compatible with a full DAAD scholarship. Scholarship holders in the “University Summer Courses in Germany” and “University Winter Courses in Germany” programs as well as those who receive a partial scholarship from DAAD can also take advantage of ERASMUS funding.

B. Preparing your Application

1. In the Call for Applications for Study Scholarships, a so-called “letter of motivation” must be submitted. What does this mean?

In a letter of motivation, you are required to describe your professional and personal reasons for wishing to study in Germany on at least one and no more than three pages.

A letter of motivation is required when you apply for a study  scholarship  or a grant for a language or specialist course. This letter gives you the opportunity to describe your personality and the reasons why you are applying for DAAD funding. The following information and questions will help you write an informative letter of motivation.

  • Studies: study programme, number of  semesters , if applicable, degree
  • Professional experience, if applicable
  • Specialised knowledge, skills and language skills
  • Prizes and awards (if applicable)
  • Why do you wish to take the study program or attend the language or specialist course for which you are applying?
  • What appeals to you about your chosen university?
  • What are your expectations of studying in Germany or attending the course (personal, professional, for your career)?
  • Why are you applying for a DAAD scholarship?
  • What do you expect of this scholarship?
  • How will the scholarship help you achieve your academic, professional and personal goals?
  • Personal interests
  • Here you can outline special extracurricular achievements and commitments or personal qualities that say something about your character.

2. The call for scholarship applications requires a comprehensive and precise “Description of my research project”. What exactly does this mean? You can find tips on how to introduce a research project on the daad.de website here: “How should I introduce my research project? ”

3. I would like to improve my German language skills before I arrive in the country. Are there online language courses that I can take in my home country? Yes, you can learn German online. Find out on the daad.de website Deutsch-lernen.net  about the different options that are available for learning German. Special online German language courses are offered by the  Goethe-Institut , for example, or  Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)  (for scholarship holders whose scholarship lasts longer than six months, the DAAD covers the costs of a DUO module).

C. Planning your Project

1. Do I have to have contacts in Germany when I apply? Yes, if you are carrying out individual research in Germany or – in artistic subjects – wish to continue your education individually, you need an invitation from a German supervisor (see item 2).

If you are participating in a structured study, you only need to provide information about your chosen degree course (see “Application procedure” in the call for scholarship applications). If you already have a contact at your host institution, it is also advisable to enclose appropriate proof (e.g. e-mail correspondence).

2. I need a supervisor for my individual project in Germany. Who can be my academic host? Hosts can be university teachers or academic teaching staff who work at a state or state-approved university or a non-university research institute in Germany. If possible, the host should be qualified to teach at professorial level.

3. I have found a supervisor for my individual project. What documents do I need from him/her for the application? Your academic supervisor must confirm that he/she is willing to help you carry out your research project or doctorate in a “Letter confirming academic supervision”, which you must submit with your application. Ideally, the letter of confirmation (informal) from your supervisor shall

  • indicate that the description of your research project and schedule has been discussed,
  • confirm that a workplace is available for you, and
  • specify the language that is spoken at the host institute.

D. Writing Application

1. How do I apply? Application procedures may vary depending on scholarship programme. To find out where and how to apply, please read the “Application procedure” section of the programme’s call for applications.

Please contact us if you have any questions. You can find your nearest contact person in the  scholarship database  under the “Contact and Consulting” tab for a scholarship programme.

2. In the call for scholarship applications it says I have to apply through the DAAD portal.

  • What does that mean?  You have to apply online. To do this, you have to register in the DAAD portal. Select first the call for scholarship applications for your chosen scholarship programme and then the tab “Application portal” in the  scholarship database on the daad.de website . Please note that this tab is only visible in the period in which it is possible to apply for this scholarship programme or when the DAAD portal is open for applications.
  • I have a problem with my online application. What can I do? If technical problems occur, please send an e-mail to  [email protected] .
  • Which documents do I have to upload to be able to submit an application to the DAAD portal?  Your application is only complete if you submit all the application documents listed in the call for applications. With the exception of your signed reference form and work samples (e.g. DVDs), all of these documents must be uploaded to the DAAD portal. In some cases, individual documents (e.g. university certificate) may be submitted at a later date if this is explicitly permitted in the programme’s call for scholarship applications.
  • Do I receive confirmation that my application has been received?  Yes, as soon as you have submitted your application online, you will automatically receive confirmation that your application has been successfully submitted and an e-mail informing you that a message has been sent to you via the portal’s messaging system. The message confirms that your application has been received.
  • Is my application complete if I submit it via the DAAD portal?  No. Your application is only complete when we have received your complete electronic application via the online portal and reference by post (postmark date is valid). Please note that incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

3. The call for scholarship applications states that I must submit a letter of recommendation from a university teacher. Who can write a letter of recommendation for my application? Letters of recommendation in scientific subjects should be written by postdoc university teachers who can provide information about the following:

  • What are your academic achievements?
  • What are your subject-specific and personal qualities?
  • Is your project well planned, feasible and relevant?
  • What significance does the scholarship have for your academic and professional career?

4. Do I have to apply in German? Unless otherwise stated in the call for scholarship applications, you can submit your application either in German or English. Please note that application documents that are not in German or English must be translated either into German or English. The translations do not have to be certified for the application procedure, and you may do the translations yourself. In most scholarship programmes, translations must be submitted again in certified form if a scholarship is awarded.

5. What language certificates do I need when I apply for a scholarship? You can find out what language certificates you need when you apply for a scholarship in the “Application procedure” section of the call for scholarship applications.

E. Selection Procedure

  • Who makes a decision about my application? The selection committee is an independent committee made up of expert US, Canadian, and German If necessary, experts in the respective subject are asked to submit written statements. DAAD employees do not vote in the scholarship election procedure.
  • for study or research stays and courses of continuing education: a convincing and well-planned project (see “ How should I introduce my research project?” on the daad.de website )
  • for structured study programmes or language and special courses: a well-justified choice of course (see “How do I write my letter of motivation?” on the daad.de website ).
  • academic achievements.

F. Scholarship Benefits

1. What’s the whole amount of the monthly scholarship payment? The scholarship payment depends on the academic qualifications of the scholarship holders and on the scholarship program. Scholars taking a Master’s program typically receive € 934, doctoral candidates and postdocs € 1,200. Rates for university teachers are usually € 2,000 for assistant teachers, assistant professors and lecturers, € 2,150 for professors. You can find an overview of other possible benefits in each program’s Call for Applications in the Scholarship database at www.funding-guide.de.

2. Who pays for outward and return travel expenses? Unless travel expenses are covered by another source of funding, the DAAD pays a contribution towards the scholarship holder’s travel expenses.

3. Can I bring my family with me? If the funding period is less than six months, there are no provisions to unite families and therefore no family allowances can be paid. For scholarships with a funding period of over six months, please read the call for scholarship applications to find out if this programme provides for family members.

4. Do I have to take out health insurance in Germany? Scholarship holders and accompanying family members must be covered by health insurance throughout their stay in Germany from their first day in the country. Health insurance coverage in Germany is regulated differently depending on country of origin. You will be informed about the conditions of health insurance and the services provided by the DAAD when you receive the Scholarship Award Letter.

5. Am I allowed to take on additional work as a scholarship holder in Germany? Scholarship holders wishing to do additional work during their scholarship, i.e. pursue gainful employment, always require the approval of the DAAD. The host must also approve the additional work. The DAAD is responsible for making sure that the additional work does not endanger fulfilment of the scholarship purpose, as described in the introduction of the call for applications. Casual earnings that exceed the “Income limit for part-time workers” (currently €450.00 a month) are credited against the monthly scholarship payments.

6. I have heard that tuition fees are charged by some universities in  Germany . Do I have to pay these fees if I’m receiving a DAAD scholarship? Although tuition fees are not generally charged in Germany, studying at some universities is not always free of charge. In the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, international students (Bachelor and Master’s level) at state universities have had to pay a fee of € 1,500 per semester since the winter semester 2017/18. However, universities can issue a statute that allows certain exceptions, for example, for especially gifted students or students from developing countries. It is therefore important that you ask your chosen host university about possible exceptions. Private universities in all federal states may also charge tuition fees. These can vary considerably. You should therefore find out about possible fees before submitting your application. Both state and private universities in all federal states may also charge fees for so-called Master’s study courses providing further education   (“weiterbildende Masterstudiengänge”) that often require previous professional experience or lead to a certain additional qualification. These include the so-called LL.M. degree programmes for law students. Fees for these programmes are sometimes very high so you should find out about them in advance. On principle, DAAD pays no tuition fees for its scholarship holders. So even if you are a scholarship holder, you should ask your chosen host university whether it charges tuition fees in any of the above cases.

International Students and Scholars

DAAD USA and the programs on www.daad.org serve the academic communities of North America only. In most cases international students and scholars at North American universities are eligible for DAAD programs if they meet certain requirements. Find your perfect college degree

In this article, we will be covering...

“First, you get your bachelor’s degree, and you think you know everything. Then, you get your master’s degree, and you realize you don’t know anything. Then you get your doctorate, and you find out that nobody knows anything.”

While we can’t find information on who said these words, we can’t help but laugh! You, a student pursuing your doctoral degree, may even laugh at it because there’s a grain of truth to it. Your doctoral dissertation, after all, will likely be about creating new knowledge or building on old knowledge because “nobody knows anything,” in a manner of speaking.

But why are you pursuing a doctoral degree when your master’s degree will suffice for most jobs? There are even people who believe that it’s a waste of time and money for many reasons. Some people push for it because of the numerous benefits that it brings.

PhD Scholarships fact 1

So which one’s a better perspective? A doctoral degree is about contributing to the existing body of knowledge through original research. It is considered an introduction to independent research in your chosen field with your doctoral dissertation as the first of many intellectual masterpieces.

Let’s first take a look at the unfavorable view because there’s also some merit to it. For one thing, there’s the cost of doctoral education that, in U.S. universities, can range from $28,000 to $40,000 per year in tuition and fees. In Ivy League universities, the cost can be higher – at Harvard University, for example, the full tuition needed for the first two years of study is $49,448, exclusive of health insurance, housing, books and supplies, and food expenses.

Yes, indeed, it isn’t cheap to get a doctoral degree in the United States, not even in one of the lesser-known universities!

In addition, there’s a sense of dissatisfaction among doctoral students. You may feel, at one point, that you’re doing slave labor, no thanks to the 10-hour workdays, and low pay during your research.

Your employment prospects may also seem uncertain, considering the competition due to the oversupply of Ph.D. holders . The number of Ph.D. holders exceeds the number of employment opportunities for them, too! Such a disconnection partly stems from the high degree of specialization required in getting a doctoral degree, not to mention that Ph.D. holders have high employment expectations.

Still, the number of doctoral degree holders in the U.S. has more than doubled between 2000 and 2018! In 2000, there were 2 million Ph.D. holders, and by 2018, there were already 4.5 million. Why do people pursue doctoral degrees despite the myriad of challenges that come with them?

PhD Scholarships fact 2

Here’s why.

  • You have a clear edge in getting higher positions and, thus, higher pay. Studies have shown that a Ph.D. is a contributing factor toward earning over 20% more than people with master’s degrees.   The Chronicle of Higher Education revealed instructors of Legal Professions and Studies without a doctorate earned $64,785, while those with doctorate degrees earned $91,828 per year (2011). In a PayScale comparison , Ph.D. holders earned $98,300 per year, on average.
  • Your specialized knowledge and skills are highly marketable. You will likely enjoy a flexible career path, whether you choose a career in public service or the private sector. Your career will also be characterized by the highest lifetime earning potential and the lowest unemployment rate! Your Ph.D. training will also strengthen your critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills, which are highly sought after by employers.
  • You will be a recognized knowledge creator, a rare skill sought after by society and employers, too. You have gained both the discipline and ability to search for, introduce, and defend new knowledge, even under the most stringent scrutiny. Your competencies will lead to a leadership position as you gain respect and prestige.

Are you still worried about the financial expenses of getting a Ph.D. in your field? We completely understand since $50,000-plus per year plus the difficulties of juggling work, studies, and family responsibilities will break a lesser person. But you can achieve your doctoral degree through scholarships and grants!

This isn’t a new concept either as millions of Ph.D. holders have also achieved such a lofty goal. Many of them have been scholars and fellows for most, if not all, of their studies – and it’s a path you can take, too, with plenty of planning and networking.

You have dozens, if not hundreds, of scholarship and fellowship opportunities in your field of study, not to mention the ones offered without restrictions as to the field of study. The trick here is in diligently looking for these opportunities, applying to as many as you are qualified for, and complying with the requirements.

You may have to apply every semester or academic year for a new scholarship or fellowship, but it’s worth the time and effort. You could be lucky and be one whose studies were financed through scholarships and grants from year one; although, luck has little to do with it because you spent time looking and qualifying for the scholarships you deserve!

PhD Scholarships fact 5

Are scholarships for Ph.D. applicants easy to obtain?

The availability of scholarships for Ph.D. applicants varies depending on the program and school. Generally, scholarships are more difficult to obtain than grants or fellowships, as there is often a limited amount of funds available and a more significant number of applicants competing for them.

However, several scholarships are available specifically for Ph.D. applicants, so it is worth researching what is available and applying for those that are a good fit.

Introduction

I have seen and personally worked with PhD candidates of all ages, some older than me, some younger. In all my time within academia, I haven’t come across any university that places a limit on the age of an individual that wants to apply for and pursue a full time doctoral degree; indeed the practice of doing so would be rightly considered a form of discrimination at most academic institutions and even against the law in some countries.

However, a quick search on Google is enough to see that the question about age limits for doing a PhD is something that is asked quite often. This leads me to believe that there are many very capable potential doctoral candidates in the world that haven’t pursued their dreams of academic research almost entirely because they believe that they’re too old to do so.

There is No Age Limit for Doing a PhD

Simply put there is no age limit for someone considering doing a PhD. Indeed, on the opposite end of the scale, even the definition of a minimum’ age at which someone can start a PhD is not really well defined.

One of the youngest PhD graduates in recent times is thought to be Kim Ung-Yong who is a South Korean professor who purportedly earned a PhD in civil engineering at the age of 15 [1]. For the vast majority however, the practical considerations of progressing through the different stages of education (i.e. high school, undergraduate degree, a Master’s degree, etc.) mean that most won’t start their PhD projects until they’re at least in their early to mid 20’s; in the UK, for example, the average age for a PhD graduate is between 26 and 27 years old [2].

Meanwhile, the oldest person to be awarded a PhD degree in the United Kingdom is thought to be 95 year old Charles Betty, who gained his doctorate from the University of Northampton in 2018 after completing his 48,000 word thesis on why elderly expats living in Spain decide to return to the UK’ [3].

What does the data say?

According to data published by the National Science Foundation (NSF), a total of 54,904 people earned PhDs at universities in the United States of America in 2016; 46% of all new doctorates were women and 31% were international candidates [4].

Looking at the age distributions available for 51,621 of these new PhD graduates in 2016, 44% (n=22,863) were aged 30 or below, 43% (n=22,038) were aged between 31 and 40 and 13% (n=6,720) were over the age of 40 when they were awarded their doctoral degree. In this same year, over 50% of PhD students in subjects related to physical sciences, earth sciences, life sciences, mathematics, computer sciences and engineering were below the age of 31, whilst less than 10% of these STEM graduates were older than 41.

Conversely, 61% of PhDs in humanities and arts and 52% in other non-engineering and science disciplines gained their doctorates between 31 and 40 years of age. Interestingly, the analysis by the NSF found that 94% of doctoral candidates aged below 31 supported their research financially through research or teaching assistantships, grants or fellowships. Only 36% of PhDs aged over 41 at graduation reported receiving similar types of financial support; approximately 50% of this age group were found to have self-funded their studies.

The reasons for fewer doctoral candidates aged over 41 receiving external funding to support their time as research students is not clear. On the face of it, the data may appear to suggest a bias towards funding younger students which unfortunately may be the case in some instances. In Germany, for example, the German Federal Training Assistance Act (BAfG) provides funding support for higher education but places a limit of 30 years for undergraduate degrees and 35 years for postgraduate students at graduate school. However, another explanation, at least in some cases, may be that non-STEM related subjects are less likely to be associated with specific project funding and NSF analysis suggests PhDs in these subjects are more often undertaken by older doctoral candidates.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages?

No one should be discouraged from pursuing a PhD program or entering into higher education based on how old they are and indeed there are several (albeit subjective) benefits and disadvantages of doing a PhD in your younger’ or older’ years.

A perceived advantage may be that gaining a PhD in your 20’s can potentially give you more time to develop your career. Younger doctoral students could earn their PhD and enter into academic jobs before starting a family (although many people successfully carry out doctoral research whilst also looking after young children). You could even afford yourself the time and flexibility to implement a career change further down the line if you so wanted.

Conversely, entering a graduate school and becoming a PhD student in later years means that you’ll be doing so having gained a lot more life experience and for some STEM research projects in particular, having work experience in industry can be invaluable. As an older PhD candidate you’re likely to be better equipped to work independently and the relationships / connections you’ll have built over time may be a useful factor in helping you progress faster. I’ve met several older students at university who had the opportunity to undertake PhD research years ago but have no regrets in having waited and started the adventure in later years.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

It’s inevitable that the question of age limits for pursing a PhD is going to invite some controversial opinions from some people; this unfortunately may always be the case when talking about differing social and demographic factors.

There’s no doubt however that PhD programs can help career advancement or a career change regardless of age however there’s also nothing to stop you from becoming a graduate student just for the academic pursuit!

The answer here is very simple: there is no age limit for doing a PhD.

by Impactpool

It is that time of the year that many are finalizing their applications for upleveling their education. As you know, in order to land Internationally Recruited Positions at most Organizations, a Master's Degree is an essential minimum requirement. Organizations have begun to include more years of work experience plus a bachelor's degree in case one does not have a Master's Degree to accommodate those with exceptional technical skills for a job.

That being said, gaining a university degree is essential to transition into International Roles.

Many have financial reasons not to pursue higher education therefore, we have put together a compilation of scholarships open to International Students from around the world to consider and apply for.

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for applicants from least developed countries and fragile States, as classified by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), in the Commonwealth,  for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) provides the UK government scholarship scheme led by international development objectives. It operates within the framework of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and offers a vivid demonstration of the UK’s enduring commitment to the Commonwealth. By attracting individuals with outstanding talent and identifiable potential from all backgrounds and supporting them to become leaders and innovators on returning to their home countries, the CSC’s work combines sustainable development with the UK national interest and provides opportunities for international partnerships and collaboration.

Purpose: Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) , Commonwealth PhD scholarships contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by supporting research that will have a developmental impact. They also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international applicants and encouraging links and collaboration, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Intended beneficiaries: Commonwealth PhD scholarships are for high-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

These scholarships are offered under the six  CSC Development themes .

Applications for Commonwealth PhD scholarships for the 2024/25 academic year are now closed.

Applications to the CSC must be made using the CSC’s online application system.

The CSC is unable to accept any applications or documentation not submitted via the online application system .

Applicants are advised to complete and submit applications as early as possible, as the online application system will be very busy in the days leading up to the application deadline.

As well as applying to the CSC, applicants must apply to a nominating agency .

There are three types of nominating agency for PhD scholarships:

  • National nominating agencies  – this is the main route of application.
  • Selected universities/university bodies  – which can nominate their own academic staff.
  • Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies .

Nominating agencies put forward applicants to the CSC for consideration. The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships.

Each nominating agency oversees its own selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria.  Applicants must check with the nominating agency for their specific advice and rules for applying, and their own eligibility criteria.

Nominating agencies may set their own closing dates for applications.

Agencies will nominate candidates to the CSC by December 2023.

Applicants can expect to hear the outcome by July 2024. We will contact all applicants by email and they should ensure all folders of their email accounts are monitored, including junk mail and spam folders. A scholarship offer may be withdrawn if an applicant is emailed but does not respond within a specified time.

Applications must include supporting documentation to be eligible.

Please note that applicants are required to collect references and supporting statements, on institution letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details, from referees and proposed supervisors in the UK and then upload them in PDF format to the application system with their other supporting documentation.

The references and supporting statements must be uploaded to the application system by the deadline for applications and we are unable to accept references and supporting statements any other way or after this date.

Applicants must upload the following documents with the application:

  • Proof that they are a citizen or have refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country: a copy of a valid passport (or national ID card) showing a photograph, date of birth, and country of citizenship.
  • Full transcripts detailing all higher education qualifications, including to-date transcripts for any courses currently being studied, with certified translations if not in English. Where any transcripts are missing or do not include all pages, the application will be considered ineligible.
  • References from at least two individuals, in PDF format, signed and on institutional letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details.
  • A supporting statement, in PDF format, signed and on institutional letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details, from a proposed supervisor in the UK from at least one of the institutions named on the application form.

Applications will be considered ineligible if any of the required documentation is not included by the closing date.

The CSC will not accept supporting documentation submitted outside the online application system.

When completing the references, referees should be asked to comment as fully as possible on the applicant, keeping in mind the following points for inclusion, as appropriate:

  • How long, and in what capacity, the referee has known the applicant.
  • The referee’s views on the applicant’s suitability for the proposed Scholarship and the need for the particular subject of study in the UK.
  • Information on how, and to what extent, the applicant has shown ability in terms of capability to grasp concepts and reason analytically; capacity for original thought; and motivation and perseverance in achieving objectives.
  • Assessment of the applicant’s particular strengths and weaknesses.
  • The applicant’s potential to impact development in their home country.
  • Any other general qualities which the referee considers would make the applicant a good recipient of a Scholarship.

Please note that the CSC does not charge apply for any of its scholarships or fellowships through its online application system.

When completing supporting statements, proposed supervisors should be asked to confirm that they are, in principle, prepared to have the applicant working with them and that they have the facilities to undertake the research. They should also be asked how the applicant’s plan of study fits with the expertise of their department and to indicate how much of the applicant’s plan of study, if any, they wrote. Any additional comments they make will be appreciated by the Commission.

For more information, please contact CDPF directly using the details on our NGOs and charitable body nominators page .

The CSC aims to identify talented individuals who have the potential to make change. We are committed to a policy of equal opportunity and non-discrimination and encourage applications from a diverse range of applicants. For further information on the support available to scholars who share that they have a disability, see the  CSC disability support statement .

Selection Process and criteria

Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria:

  • Academic merit
  • Quality of research proposal
  • Potential impact on the development of the candidate’s come country

For further details, see the Commonwealth Scholarships selection criteria .

Applicants should note the criteria carefully and link their answers in the application form to each point listed.

Scholarships are tenable at any approved UK university or higher education institution with which the CSC has a part-funding agreement for a specific programme of research for 36 months of full-time study only. For the full list, see here: cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk/uk-universities

Scholarships are to obtain one degree; funding will not be extended to enable candidates to complete a qualification in addition to or higher than that for which the selection was made.

Scholarships are made in respect of full-time study only and no other course of study may be undertaken at the same time.

The CSC does not provide new direct financial or promotional support for the fossil fuel energy sector overseas, defined as the extraction, production, transportation, refining and marketing of crude oil, natural gas or thermal coal, as well as any fossil-fuel fired power plants.

Applicants must make clear in the application which qualification they are applying for. This will enable the CSC to consider the application in the correct category. Applications which do not make this clear may be considered ineligible.

Applicants are advised to list three universities and supervisors that they think are the most appropriate for their study, in order of preference, and to explain their reasons. This is important because the CSC will not change the university or supervisor (or the order of preference) of a provisionally selected candidate after the point of selection, unless exceptional information becomes available that could not have been foreseen at the time of application.

Applicants may propose to study at one university for a four-year PhD, but this must be based in a recognised Doctoral Training Centre. They must research this option thoroughly and justify its added value compared with a three-year PhD. As the CSC will fund only a limited number of four-year PhDs, applicants are strongly advised to also propose at least one three-year PhD choice.

The CSC will make the final decision on institution of study, and reserves the right to overrule any preferences indicated by the candidate. The CSC will consider the suitability of the course and its value for money when deciding on any overrule.

Applicants must take the necessary steps to apply for admission to their preferred universities in advance of their scholarship application. Many courses have strict admission deadlines and candidates should check admission requirements carefully when applying. If an applicant is selected for a scholarship and has not applied and been accepted for a course, it may not be possible to proceed with the scholarship.

Applicants must provide a supporting statement for a named supervisor from at least one of the UK universities to which they are applying. Details of what the supporting statement should include are outlined in the supporting documentation section. Applicants are strongly advised to provide a supporting statement from a supervisor at the first choice university. If not, the CSC reserves the right to select for placement at another university for which a statement is provided.

Each scholarship provides:

  • Approved airfare from the Scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of the award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before the award is confirmed).
  • Approved tuition fees: full fees are covered by agreement between the CSC and the UK university, and Scholars are not liable to pay for any part of the tuition fee.
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,347 per month, or £1,652 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at current levels).
  • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable.
  • Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
  • Provision towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (the cost of one economy class return airfare to the fieldwork location), where approved.
  • Paid mid-term visit (airfare) to the Scholar’s home country, unless they have claimed or intend to claim spouse and/or child allowances during their scholarship or have received a return airfare to their home country for fieldwork.
  • If a Scholar is accompanied by their spouse but no children: spouse allowance of £290 per month for a maximum period of nine months, if they and their spouse are living together at the same address in the UK (unless the spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply).
  • If a Scholar is accompanied by their spouse and children: spouse allowance of £290 per month and child allowance of £290 per month for the first child, and £143 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if their spouse and children are living with them at the same address in the UK (unless their spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply).
  • If a Scholar has children and is widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of child allowance of £576.61 per month for the first child, and £143 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if their children are living with them at the same address in the UK.

If a Scholar shares that they have a disability, a full assessment of their needs and eligibility for additional financial support will be offered by the CSC.

The CSC’s family allowances are intended to be only a contribution towards the cost of maintaining a Scholar’s family in the UK. The true costs are likely to be considerably higher, and Scholars must be able to supplement these allowances to support any family members who accompany them to the UK.

For more information, see the current Handbook for Commonwealth Scholars .

Please note that the conditions outlined in the Handbook are subject to change.

A Commonwealth Scholarship covers fees, approved fares, and personal maintenance. Other scholarships, awards, or bursaries that cover the same costs may not be held concurrently.

For the CSC to administer the application effectively and efficiently after submission, it will be necessary to create a record in the applicant’s name. If they apply for an award to the CSC, their details will be kept on file. Basic anonymised demographic data for all applicants will be kept for analytical research. The CSC is committed to protecting personal information and to being transparent about the information we are collecting about applicants and what we do with it. To find out more, see our privacy notice .

Applicant’s personal information will be used to conduct necessary due diligence checks to CSC’s satisfaction, before CSC proceeds with any type of formal agreement or contractual relationship. In most cases, the due diligence checks will be straightforward, however further information may be requested, so we ask for full co-operation to speed up the process.

If an applicant does not agree to personal data being used for the purpose of conducting due diligence, unfortunately CSC will not be able to proceed further with the application process.

If an application is successful, the CSC will notify the applicant that they have been provisionally selected (selected for an award subject to the CSC agreeing terms of admission to the university) at which point they will be a provisional scholarship candidate.

The CSC does not require any applicants to take an IELTS (English language) test.

The CSC will not be able to offer a scholarship if it would contravene the terms and conditions of another scholarship previously held.

When terms of admission to the university have been agreed, the CSC will provide a Notification of Award (formal offer of a scholarship).

When all conditions of the Notification of Award have been met, the CSC will provide a formal Confirmation of Award.

Candidates will be required to submit a Health and Disability Form  before the Confirmation of Award can be issued.

Candidates will be required to sign an undertaking to return to their home country as soon as possible after the end of the award.

Candidates are expected to start the award on the date stated in the Notification of Award.

If a candidate requires a Student visa to come to the UK to study, they must meet all relevant immigration requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration. They should check the GOV.UK website for updated information.

All UK immigration regulations are set by UK Visas and Immigration and are subject to change. The CSC has no control over these regulations.

Candidates will be selected for an award based on the plan of study outlined on the application form, which is not expected to change significantly during the award. Any such changes must be agreed by the CSC.

Throughout their award, Scholars are expected to reside in the UK, and must seek approval from the CSC in advance of any overseas travel.

Scholars must not undertake paid employment during the award without approval from the CSC in advance.

Collaboration is a feature of doctoral research. The CSC expects that participants in collaborative projects will develop a collaborative agreement to clarify the contributions and rights of each partner. The CSC will not get involved in negotiating an exploitation agreement but will need to be assured that an arrangement acceptable to all parties exists. Arrangements should be made to identify, protect, and value any arising intellectual property and to secure a suitable return to the institution and the investigators through exploitation. The CSC considers the intellectual property ownership to lie initially with the student; however, many universities have their own locally applicable policy. In many cases, it is in the best interest of a student for ownership to be vested with the university, which will have greater negotiating powers and will be likely to be able to seek the best returns in any exploitation agreement. 4 scholarships for postgraduates with no IELTS or TOEFL

Pursuing your postgraduate studies overseas doesn’t come cheap. Apart from tuition fees, students also have to take into account living expenses, accommodation costs and others. Additional fees such as English proficiency tests only add to this. Typically, these come in the form of completing the IELTS and TOEFL .

Fortunately, some international scholarships for postgraduates don’t require students to show proof of English proficiency with formal certifications. Instead, you may need to provide proof of your English proficiency through other means, such as by asking for an English proficiency report from your university.

Looking for alternative ways to fund your postgraduate studies without IELTS or TOEFL? Here are four fully-funded scholarships for postgraduates to consider:

British Chevening Scholarships, UK

The Chevening Scholarship is among one of the most prestigious international scholarships that students can be awarded for their master’s. To qualify, students have to be enrolled at an accredited university in the UK and hail from a Chevening-eligible country . For more eligibility requirements, read here .

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, taking required English tests have added an extra challenge for some students. As a result, the scholarship committee waived English proficiency requirements to better standardise scholarship applications .

However, some universities may have their own conditions of entry separate from that of the Chevening application. The best thing to do is to check with your individual universities if they still expect proof of English test requirements.

  • Business Doctorate (BusD)
  • Master of Business (MBA)
  • Master of Finance (MFin)
  • MASt courses
  • MBBChir Clinical Studies

The Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) Scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship open to all international students. There are also no application fees required.

Awardees will also be greatly exposed to Thai culture as the scholarship makes it mandatory for students to stay in the on-campus dorms.

The validity of the scholarship for master’s students is two years while PhD candidates are covered for three years. What’s more, students can show proof of their English proficiency in more accessible English test formats such as Duolingo or the Cambridge English test .

15 Scholarships without IELTS Requirement Abroad

There are numerous universities abroad that offer scholarships without IELTS requirement you may not know about. Here in this article, you’ll find them.

So what is IELTS? The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a means of measuring the language proficiency of people who want to study or work in countries where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to carry out the identification process of the levels of proficiency, ranging from non-user (band score 1) to expert (band score 9).

Usually, IELTS is available for individuals applying for higher education studies or professional registration. There are even universities without IELTS requirements for interested students to enroll in. So, in this article, we are going to unravel some of the best universities in the world and countries that offer scholarships without IELTS. All scholarships without IELTS requirements listed below are for only international students. You are also to note that scholarships specific to some countries will be mentioned along with the scholarship.

Is it possible to study abroad without IELTS exam?

Yes, this is possible, but what matters in this case is the program you want to study and the university you want to get into. Major universities in the best countries of the world and several governments offer scholarships with IELTS exemption. Anyway, if you are coming from a country not granted IELTS exemption, here are some top universities in Canada and Australia accepting IELTS score of 6 for admission.

Is there any way to get Scholarships without IELTS in Canada?

Sure, there are several university scholarships open to international students to apply for, without the limitations of IELTS. You are to check below for the same. Some top-ranked universities in Canada offer scholarships annually with an IELTS requirement exemption. You can study in Canadian universities without IELTS if you can prove one of the following:

  • If your application is to the same institution where your first degree had been awarded in English.
  • If you have a degree that has been taught in English alone.
  • If you are from countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa your citizens enjoy attention from the above-listed universities likewise many other universities. That notwithstanding, different courses require different levels of expertise in English.

What do I have to do to get scholarships without IELTS Requirement?

To get admission via scholarships without IELTS requirements in any university in the world where this is obtainable, you should have an English Proficiency Certificate which is a certificate obtained from your previous institution.

To get English Proficiency Certificate from one’s previous institution, a student has to study his/her previous degree in English.

For instance, if you are a student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and your program is in English, then you will be able to get this certificate at completing your degree.

Once this certificate is gotten, then you can apply for scholarships without IELTS requirement in the universities you wish to apply to.

Scholarships: age limit.

phd scholarship without age limit

THE Higher Education Commission (HEC) has been framing and endorsing rules without logic. The HEC has an age limit of 35 years for indigenous as well as for foreign MS/PhD scholarships.

What benefits can be derived by imposing such restriction? Is the HEC targeting maximum benefits to the younger lot of society? Or is it putting a halt on those who are desirous of improving qualification but have crossed the age of 35?

This is not justifiable. Scores of people are being deprived of higher qualifications because of this policy. The HEC is perhaps oblivious of the famous slogan ‘Education for all’, which means there be no gender, racial or age biases in the way of education. Article 25-A of the Constitution guarantees free and compulsory education.

If we consider the Fulbright scholarship, which is one of the distinguished scholarships being offered to Pakistanis each year, it is offered without age limit.

The HEC must act wisely by abandoning the age restriction for indigenous, as well as for foreign, MS/PhD scholarships and bring it on par with Fulbright scholarship, free from all biases.
