Everything You Need to Know About TESOL Programs

What is a TESOL program

If you want to teach English abroad or to non-native speakers in the United States, you'll need a TESOL certification. TESOL programs provide a deep dive into a culturally diverse and academically challenging environment of second language learning. They offer the chance to learn different teaching methods, grasp complex language acquisition concepts, and develop strategies for creating inclusive learning spaces.

We'll tell you everything you need to know about TESOL certification, including common questions such as:

  • What is a TESOL program ?
  • How do you get TESOL certified?
  • What are the benefits of a Master's in TESOL?
  • Where can you teach English as a second language?

What is TESOL?

TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It is a field of education focused on teaching English to non-native speakers. It encompasses various teaching methods and strategies to help learners from diverse linguistic backgrounds develop their English language skills. TESOL professionals work with English language learners across diverse age groups and cultural backgrounds.

TESOL educators are trained to understand the challenges faced by non-native English speakers, from basic communication to academic proficiency in English. The field covers a wide array of instructional settings—ranging from local community centers and schools to international universities and corporate environments. The goal is to equip learners with the English language skills necessary for successful communication in everyday life, academic pursuits, and professional scenarios.

How to Get TESOL Certified

There are several ways to get certified to teach English as a second language. We'll share the process for obtaining TESOL certification alongside a MA in TESOL program:

  • Obtain a bachelor's degree. You'll need a bachelor's degree in English, education, or a closely related field.
  • Meet the basic admissions requirements for a Master's program. Admissions requirements for the MA in TESOL program at Pepperdine University include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, a letter of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and potentially a personal interview. There may be additional requirements for international students.
  • Complete the MA in TESOL program. During the program, you'll gain real-world experience teaching in multicultural and multilingual learning environments. The program at Pepperdine University culminates in a digital portfolio capstone experience which allows students to focus on either practice or scholarship/research.
  • Receive your certification. Once you successfully complete the program, you will be awarded a Master's degree in TESOL, which certifies your qualification to teach English to non-native speakers.

Benefits of a Master's in TESOL

While a Master's degree in TESOL isn't a requirement, it can be a transformative step in your professional journey. This advanced degree program will give you additional in-depth knowledge in areas such as language theory, curriculum design, and pedagogical strategies that will set you up for a successful career in English language teaching.

Comprehensive Teacher Training

One of the biggest benefits of an MA in TESOL is the extensive teacher training you'll receive through advanced courses in second language acquisition, pedagogy, and linguistics. This in-depth training ensures that graduates are well-prepared to meet the diverse needs of English learners in various educational settings. The program's holistic approach not only enhances teaching effectiveness but also equips educators with the ability to design and adapt curricula to suit varying learning styles and contexts.

Hands-on Practice

Many TESOL degree programs, especially those offered by accredited institutions like Pepperdine University, include hands-on practice through teaching practicums. These opportunities allow students to apply their learning in real-world settings, enhancing their teaching practice and preparing them for the challenges of the classroom. This practical component helps the gap between theory and practice.

Opportunities in Higher Education and Specialized Programs

With a graduate degree, teachers have the opportunity to work in higher education institutions and specialized English language programs, providing opportunities for a successful career in academia. The degree also opens pathways to roles in international education programs, enabling graduates to work across global platforms and settings.

Qualification for Advanced Roles

A Master’s degree in TESOL is often a prerequisite for advanced teaching positions and roles in educational leadership or curriculum development. It signifies a high level of expertise and commitment to the field. Graduates are seen as candidates with enhanced capabilities, ready to take on leadership and specialist roles.

Career Flexibility and Consultancy Opportunities

Graduates who hold an advanced degree can explore additional career paths, including consultancy roles where they can advise educational institutions or language programs. This degree opens up various roles beyond traditional classroom teaching. It also offers the flexibility to work in other environments such as online teaching platforms, language camps, and private tutoring.

Master's in ESL

Your TESOL Degree and Career Guide

Scholarships

Starting your scholarship search.

Master’s degree programs in TESOL, ESL, and EFL demand a commitment of time and money that short-term certificate programs do not. Most reputable universities require about 30 to 35 courses for graduation. For this reason, securing funds for master’s studies is often necessary. According to Max de Lotbinière’s article “ Help with MA Tesol study fees worth the hunt ,” students should examine all possible sources of funding, from Fulbright scholarships to university-based scholarships, from graduate assistanceships to work-study. He points out that receiving one scholarship can help a candidate get more funding, such as grants to cover costs of travel to university from their home countries.

Applicants for graduate programs should fill out financial aid forms just as undergraduates do. Use the link to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at the Federal Student Aid website , and review common questions and deadlines for filing at the Apply for Aid webpage .

Where to Look for TESOL Graduate School Scholarships

University scholarships.

Scan the department, admissions, and financial aid webpages of the ESL degree programs in which you have interest. Many universities offer merit-based scholarships, alumnae-funded grants, and fellowships to accomplished applicants. Education departments might also offer smaller awards to cover research, travel to conferences, domestic or foreign exchange programs. Some universities automatically submit all student applications for consideration of scholarships, while others have extra application requirements. Consult your university department before applying for more information.

Private Scholarships

Your academic record, cultural background, religious affiliation, home country, or other criteria can earn you scholarship money. Some noteworthy sources of private scholarships for studying TESOL, ESL, and EFL include:

The International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) Solidarity Awards

Current graduate students of academic merit or promise, who have financially disadvantaged situation, can receive a full award to the AILA World Congress upon acceptance of an abstract for presentation. AILA has also instituted the Multilingual Matters/AILA Library Award and Multilingual Matters/AILA Solidarity Award in conjunction with the publisher of Multilingual Matters.

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) TOEFL Grants and Awards

ETS along with the TOEFL board fund 11 TOEFL grants and awards yearly in the areas of international higher education and foreign or second language research, teaching or assessment.

International Reading Association: Jeanne S. Chall Grant

This grant funds reading research by promising students of beginning reading theory and practice, methods of readability, diagnosis and treatment of reading difficulty, the stages of reading development, vocabulary in the context of reading, and teaching adult literacy.

International Reading Association: IRA Steven A. Stahl Research Grant

Graduate students with a minimum of three years of teaching experience who are doing classroom research concerning the instruction of reading can apply for this grant .

The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF) Research Grants

TIRF offers Doctoral Dissertation Grants, Sheikh Nahayan Fellowships, and Priority Research Grants. These awards go to students working in the areas of improving English language teaching and learning, applying research to language problems, and the teaching and learning of language.

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

This major fellowship for graduate study awards tuition and living expenses to permanent residents or naturalized citizens born abroad.

The International English Testing System (IELTS) Grants and Awards

The organization awards research grants to students pursuing IELTS-related research. It also funds The Caroline Clapham IELTS Masters Award, an award for a Master of Arts thesis or dissertation on the topic of language testing.

The Spencer Foundation Fellowship Awards

This fellowship is for doctoral students about to write their dissertations and for post-doctoral researchers writing papers, as well.

Other Sources of TESOL, ESL, and EFL Funding

Teach grant.

This grant , funded by the federal government, awards thousands of dollars annually to graduate students dedicated to working as full-time teachers in a high-need field at a school serving low-income students. Awardees must commit to at least four years of service.

Grants and Scholarships for TESOL Professionals

Members of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), have the benefit of applying for one of the group’s many funding opportunities . Unlike the resources listed above, these specifically apply to working professionals interested in attending a TESOL convention, symposium, academy, or workshop. These opportunities include:

Travel Grants

  • The TESOL/TEFL Travel Grant
  • The Albert H. Marckwardt Travel Grants
  • TESOL Awards for International Participation at TESOL
  • Professional Development Travel Grant for Practicing ESL/EFL Teachers

TESOL Scholarships

  • The TESOL Professional Development Scholarships
  • The TESOL Award for an Outstanding Paper on NNEST Issues

  • The Ruth Crymes TESOL Academies Fellowships

Search Wisely for Funding

It is a shame to have to report that some scholarship scams end up taking money from applicants rather than awarding money to them.

According to the U.S. News & World Report article, “ What Are the Most Common Scholarship Scams? ” students should never pay to apply for a scholarship, nor should they pay someone to compile a list of opportunities for them. Never supply your bank account or credit card information, even if a company claims it needs it to confirm your eligibility for an award.

Another issue arises in regard to providing personal information. You will eventually have to share personal details such as your name, address, and academic background. However, if the application demands much more personal details, it may in reality be a marketing ploy rather than a true funding opportunity. If you find yourself the victim of a scholarship or financial aid scam, review the federal government’s guide to reporting it, located on the Avoiding Scams  Web page.

Trusted Sources for Your Scholarship Search

For a list of free scholarships, awards, prizes, grants, and fellowships, consult the search engine provided by the U.S. Department of Labor .

Fordham University has also published a list of Reputable Scholarship Sites . This list includes one of the most popular reputable search engines, Fastweb . However, the site’s popularity can be a detriment because many people pursue the resources it lists.

  • The experience our teachers bring to the MA creates a rich ground for collaborative, professional development.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught by lecturers who themselves have been language teachers (TESOL and other languages) with experience of working in Britain and overseas.

Formal lectures are rare, and instead classes tend to mix sections of input with group-work, computer and video activities, simulations and problem-based learning.

We encourage both individual and co-operative learning and research and hope to foster an ethos of lifelong learning.

We aim to build on the expertise of our students, all of whom are experienced teachers, and who bring with them a wealth of knowledge and practical experience from a wide range of different countries.

Explore more about  teaching and learning at master's level  at The University of Manchester.

Empirical dissertations report on a research project, conceptual dissertations discuss or develop a conceptual understanding or framework of relevance to your professional development; practical dissertations display your ability to develop a course or materials for a particular professional setting based on needs analysis processes.

Multiple scholarships, fellowships and grants are available for students enrolling in a Master of Business Administration program. Since these funds do not need to be repaid, they are basically free money to help pay for your degree.

Some awards are national while others are college-specific. Some are merit-based, often depending on GMAT scores , while others are for minorities. The amounts vary, and some even offer a stipend.

Sam Weeks, an MBA admissions consultant, says that although lenders tend to be happy to finance MBAs, “a scholarship allows you to be more flexible because you don’t have that debt to pay back.”

Without an MBA scholarship, business majors whose hearts were leading them toward social impact or entrepreneurship may get forced into careers like management consulting or investment banking, Weeks says, adding that "you can’t go out and start your own business if you are $200,000 in debt. The scholarship enables them to follow more interesting post-MBA career paths.”

Here are some sources of scholarships and other funding for an MBA that don't have to be repaid.

National Sources

Military mba merit scholarship.

Veterans and active members of the military who are U.S. residents may apply for the Military MBA Merit Scholarship . The scholarship is offered to attend one of 27 partner schools throughout the U.S., and award amounts vary.

A bachelor’s degree and a record of military service are required, along with other application materials, and demonstrated leadership is a plus. Applicants cannot be already in an MBA program or a graduate of one.

Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowships

First-year MBA students seeking a summer associate position at the multinational investment bank can apply for the Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship . The program is geared toward students interested in investment banking or private wealth management at Goldman.

Recipients receive $35,000 plus a summer associate salary. Upon successful completion of that summer internship and acceptance of a full-time offer at Goldman, fellows receive an additional $40,000 and possibly a full-time associate signing bonus.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars

This program fully funds up to three years of graduate study at Stanford University in California. To qualify, applicants must complete the MBA application for Stanford's Graduate School of Business and file a separate Knight-Hennessy Scholarship application. Instructions for the scholarship application are on the program's website .

National Black MBA Association

This professional organization, which has a membership level for undergraduate and grad students, offers MBA scholarships to qualifying members who are U.S. citizens. Recipients attend a partner university, and additional award criteria, deadlines and amounts may vary.

College-Specific MBA Scholarships

Most universities with business schools offer in-house scholarships; some also provide a list of external sources of aid to pay for school, experts note.

For example, the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management and the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School are among schools that offer scholarships, fellowships and stipends in varying amounts for academic achievement, including to specific populations such as university alumni, women, state residents, veterans and international students.

Weeks advises applicants from traditional backgrounds to aim for a GMAT score above the class average. “All schools publish their class averages. When you apply to business school you submit your application, and you receive your scholarship offers either immediately or within a few weeks if your profile is strong."

However, what applicants tend to not know is that "there is a chance you can go back to the school and negotiate a scholarship,” Weeks says, giving the following scenario: “If you receive offers from two great schools, one of them with a nice scholarship and one with no scholarship, we work with our clients to tell the school with no scholarship, ‘Hey, I have an offer from another top school with a scholarship, but I’d like to join you guys. Are there any other scholarships that I’m eligible for to help close that difference in cost?’”

Applicants are often reluctant to do this because they don’t want to seem pushy, he says. But remember that you are applying to business school, and "good negotiations are part of the process,” he says, stressing that politeness is key.

Weeks also says a one-time scholarship given at the start of your program is not always the end, since sometimes you can apply for scholarships during your first year of school to cover your second year.

Smaller MBA Scholarships

Experts also encourage prospective MBA students to go for smaller scholarships, which can add up. They sometimes are offered by departments within a business school.

“As part of your MBA application, most schools will consider you for a host of merit scholarships or fellowships,” says Candy Lee LaBalle, an MBA application consultant and owner of LaBalle Admissions. “Often all you need to do to be considered is click a box that says, ‘I would like to be considered.’”

A merit scholarship is "based on the strength, or merit, of your application," LaBalle explains. "So, the stronger your profile, the higher your chances to secure one of these. This is one reason to push as hard as you can for a top test score, either GMAT or GRE . It is a nice surprise when you get an admit from a school that includes a hefty scholarship award.”

Some schools consider applicants for scholarships if they write an additional essay as part of the application process.

“Definitely write these essays and give them as much care and consideration as you do to your general application essays,” LaBalle advises.

She says there are also many private scholarships available, although they can be difficult to track down because many are offered by small organizations and target specific demographic groups. She says one comprehensive listing of outside funding is curated by UCLA's Anderson School of Management .

"Don’t limit yourself to just one scholarship," she says. "Apply for as many relevant scholarships as possible. Remember that even smaller scholarships can add up and contribute to your overall funding.”

Some countries offer scholarships for their citizens that will cover full tuition, LaBalle adds, such as Spain's La Caixa and Indonesia’s Endowment Fund for Education.

More Tips For MBA Scholarship Seekers

Experts suggest paying careful attention to rules when applying for scholarships.

“Some scholarships, such as those from Fulbright , must be applied for well before you apply to an MBA," LaBalle says. "Others, you apply after you are admitted. Websites like Scholarships 360 and GoGrad provide comprehensive lists of MBA scholarships along with application details."

Keep track of application deadlines, required documents and follow-up steps so that your scholarship applications are complete and submitted before deadlines, LaBalle suggests.

Weeks, who says he helped clients win more than $2.5 million in scholarships in 2023, cautions that a scholarship from the school is seldom awarded based just on the application essay.

“Your whole application has to be good,” he says. “If you have a good profile overall – good GMAT score, good undergrad GPA, good work experience – you are more likely to get a scholarship on the basis that the school wants you to join.”

The CMU Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development (OURSD) team works directly with students, providing continued support and advising as they engage in research and apply for scholarships. This article focuses on scholarship opportunities. A separate article expands on research funding opportunities .

OURSD staff are dedicated to helping students develop a thorough, comprehensive and competitive application for a variety of scholarship opportunities that span an array of educational experiences. The team holds scholarship and fellowship information sessions throughout the academic year that are advertised on the OURSD website and in the OURSD monthly newsletter .

Study abroad programs

Study abroad programs offer students a chance to explore new cultures, learn new languages and be exposed to new customs.  The CMU OURSD team can assist students with applying for many funded study abroad opportunities such as:

  • The Critical Language Scholarship , a U.S. State Department program for undergraduate and graduate students that funds educational and cultural exchange in 15 critical need languages.
  • The Boren Undergraduate Scholarship , which provides students with a stipend ($8,000–$20,000) to study less commonly taught languages in regions critical to U.S. interests. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
