Paris is unarguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the capital of France, of art and of fashion.

Paris city

Paris: a mythical city...

There are a thousand things to do and see in Paris and however much time you have here, it won’t be enough:

Climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower, stroll down the Champs Elysées, visit the Louvre, see many shows and exhibitions, or simply wander along the banks of the Seine...read in French in the Tuileries garden, and quite simply take the time to experience the Parisian way of life! Stepping into this whirlwind that takes you from frenzy to romanticism will leave you with enduring memories. You will be much more proficient in French, and you will become aware of your ability to communicate in the language of Molière.

What to do in Paris

This question is very easy and difficult to answer because in Paris, it depends on your desires and your aspirations, and how long you plan to stay. Before deciding on a schedule for your stay, you will have to ask yourself which things are a must for you. Is your priority to explore the city? If so, we advise you to check out well-known guides such as Le guide du routard or the Lonely Planet, which provide optimized self-guided tours ranging from 1 to several days, enabling you to take in all the must-see sights in a short amount of time.

Practical Information

Tips to visit paris 1 350x291

Getting around Paris

Upon arriving at the airport or train station you will have access to a very good public transport network as well as Parisian taxis and a large number of private car services (such as Uber).

Tips to visit paris 3 350x291

What's the weather like in Paris?

The Parisian climate is moderate with winters that are not too cold with maximum temperatures of around 8 ° C and hot summers with temperatures of around 25 ° C. Rain is frequent all year long.

Tips to visit paris 2 350x291

How much do things cost?

Your budget will obviously depend on what you have planned on doing, but you will find below some average prices to give you an idea of what you can expect to spend.

Paris: the most beautiful city in the world

You can also use the Paris l’Open Tour (tour buses) which cover four routes across the capital all day with commentary in 8 languages. From 9.30 am to 6.30 pm they travel between many stops, picking up and dropping off every 10 to 25 minutes. Otherwise, you can always do what takes your fancy and simply explore the town on foot, or climb aboard one of the legendary “bateaux-mouches” which offer a magnificent view of the city from the Seine.

In this case, we advise you to check out prices and opening times and see if fast-track passes are available on museum websites. The same goes for monuments, and particularly the Eiffel Tower which is the most visited site in France, so you will need to book your tickets in advance. For information, the monument pass offers attractive prices, distributed by the Paris tourist office and valid for multiple entries over a number of days.

If you do, you will need to check Pariscope for the dates of your stay and also book tickets in advance for the events you want to go to. We strongly recommend that you take in a show or concert during your stay. It is a good way of immersing yourself in French culture. Regardless of your proficiency, at least one of the countless events on offer will be suitable. In brief, Paris has no shortage of activities. The difficulty lies in making a choice...what matters is knowing what you want to do... From there making it happen will be easy!

Métro (subway), RER (regional train network) & tramways(light rails): with almost 400 stations, the Parisian métro is one of the most practical means of transport. RER trains operate from 6 to 12:30 a.m.; métros from 5:30 to 1:15 a.m., and until 2:15 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays. Buses: the Paris metropolitan area is criss-crossed by almost 300 lines. Buses operate from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Bus Noctilien (night bus): these buses take over from the métros and RERs from 12:30 to 5:30 a.m.

Winter 4-8 °C (39-49 °F) Spring 10-17 °C (50-62 °F) Summer 16-19 °C (60-66 °F) Autumn 12-5 °C (53-41 °F)

History of Paris • In 987, Hugh Capet became king of France, and Paris became France’s capital.

Baron Haussmann Rebuilds Paris • In 1853-70, Baron rebuilt Paris. • He made the roads bigger. • He built new buildings.

Arc De Triomphe • Construction began in the early 1800’s and was completed in 1836. • Napolean had the Arc De Triomphe built to honor those who fought for France during his regime. This is the view from the top of the arc. The Arc De Triomphe is located at the end of the very famous Champs-Elysées.

Tour Eiffel (The Eiffel Tower) • It was created in 1889 for the World Exposition. It was only meant to stay up for the duration of the exposition, however, it still remains up to this day. At first, many Parisians were completely opposed to it remaining. Now, everyone loves it and it is what makes Paris known as the City of Lights. • It was created by Gustave Eiffel. The Eiffel Tower stands at 300 meters tall which is twice as high as the Washington Monument.

Musée du Louvre • The Louvre is a famous Art museum in Paris, France. • It was opened in 1793. • It is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the first arrondissement. (district) • The Louvre was actually a palace before it was a museum. • The Louvre is home to one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous painting, The Mona Lisa (La Jaconde).

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris • Located in Paris, France. • Construction began in 1163. • The monument was completed in 1345. • It’s a Gothic, Catholic cathedral. • It is one of the first buildings to use flying buttresses which are support beams. • Several organs were put in over the course of Notre Dame’s existence.

La Seine • Major river that runs through the quarters of France • 776 km, 2nd longest river • Cuts Paris into the Right Bank and the Left Bank

Paris District • Divided into 20 districts • Each district is known by their number. • Ile de La Cité-the city: An island in the middle of the Seine

The cycling revolution in Paris continues: Bicycle use now exceeds car use

A study indicates that 11.2% of trips in the french capital are made on two wheels, compared to 4.3% in four-wheel vehicles.

Ciclismo Paris

It’s rush hour on Rue de Rivoli, one of the main arteries of the French capital. The bicycles pass one after another in quick succession, ringing their bell when a pedestrian crosses without looking. Five years ago, it was cars that monopolized this three-kilometer axis that runs in front of Paris City Hall and the Louvre Museum . Not anymore. Two-wheel transportation has prevailed, favored by a paradigm shift in urban mobility. The cycling revolution, promoted by local authorities, is beginning to bear fruit: according to a recent study by the Paris Région Institute, a public agency, bicycles already surpass cars as a means of transportation in the interior of Paris, accounting for 11.2% of trips compared to 4.3%. A similar trend is seen in trips between the suburbs and the city center: 14% are made by bicycle and 11.8% by car.

Rue de Rivoli, with its two-way cycle lanes and its dedicated lane for buses and taxis, is perhaps one of the most emblematic examples of the change that the city has experienced in recent years. But it’s not the only one. The perpendicular Boulevard de Sébastopol has become the route most frequented by cyclists, with figures that usually exceed 10,000 daily trips, according to the count kept by the association Paris en Selle.

When it is sunny, the density can be so high that traffic jams sometimes occur, and the narrowness of the lane causes friction between bikes, creating moments of tension. City officials led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a Socialist, have tried to remedy this situation by building other bike lanes on parallel streets.

From north to south and east to west, the map of the capital has been filled with infrastructure that gives the bicycle a privileged place. Paris has more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of facilities adapted for cyclists, including more than 300 km (186 m) of bike lanes and 52 km (32 m) of provisional lanes, according to the latest available municipal data, from 2021. The rest are lanes shared with cars or lanes only marked with paint on the ground.

By 2026, local officials want the entire city to be suitable for two-wheel transportation. To this end, it has set aside $250 million, $100 million more than in Hidalgo’s first term. This summer’s Olympic Games will serve as an accelerator of this new “bike plan,” with routes that will allow access to the Olympic venues.

But there is still some way to go. The Paris en Selle association warns that only 27% of the “bike plan” has been carried out despite the fact that 62% of Hidalgo’s second term in office has already elapsed. The Deputy Mayor of Paris for Transportation, David Belliard, acknowledges that there are delays, but does not lose hope. Progress is noticeable.

In some thoroughfares, the number of bikes already surpasses vehicles. Between 2022 and 2023, the use of bike lanes doubled at peak times, according to data collected by the capital’s 128 counters. The goal is to create a network of cycling paths that run along the busiest metro lines, to unclog public transit and offer an equally fast and safe alternative for commuters.

The number of people who travel by bicycle has increased exponentially. Vélib, the municipal urban bicycle rental service, has increased its fleet with 3,000 new bikes since March. Edmée Doroszlai, a 62-year-old Parisian, still remembers the first time she started riding on two wheels in the early 1980s. “It was monstrous, almost impossible and very dangerous,” she says from the center of Paris, with her bike at her side.

“There is also a big change in how men behave when they see a woman on a bike,” she adds, alluding to the normalization of its use. The presence of adapted infrastructure, she confirms, has encouraged her to use it more, as have many families who travel on cycle paths with small children.

“We still have to go further,” Belliard insisted in an interview with BFMTV earlier this month. The councilor was reacting to the study by the Paris Région Institute, the regional urban planning and environment agency, which indicated that 11.2% of trips in Paris were made by bike between 2022 and 2023, compared to 4.3% by car. The change in trend is clear. In 2021, two wheels still represented 5.6% of trips, while cars were 9%, according to Belliard.

Notre Dame

In addition to surpassing the car as a means of travel within Paris, the research indicates that residents of the nearest suburbs also prefer to use the bike, with 14% of trips compared to 11.8% for cars. The figures are even better during rush hour, when 18.9% of trips are made by bike and only 6.6% by car. Travel on foot, however, continues to lead mobility within the municipality with 53%, followed by those made on public transit, with 30%. The study was carried out with 3,337 residents of the capital region who agreed to be fitted with a GPS tracker.

The bike gradually gained popularity during the public transist strike that paralyzed the capital in December 2019, in protest of President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform . But it was also prominent after the Covid confinement in 2020, when the city tested the so-called “coronapistes,” temporary cycling lanes that progressively became permanent. Like Rivoli’s.

Better connections with neighborhoods

“The network is very good,” says Arnaud Faure, 31, co-owner of the Bivouac Cycles bicycle repair shop in Saint Ouen, a banlieue (suburb) in the north of the city. He has been in the French capital for two years and every day he travels 13 km (8 miles) to get to work and again the same to get back home. He says that almost all of his journey is along bike paths. But he cites two drawbacks. On one hand, the lack of safe parking, a determining factor for bicycle use. On the other hand, the fact that “just like in big cities, traffic is dense and can sometimes be dangerous.”

In 12 years, car traffic has decreased by 40% in Paris, according to City Hall. “But these rapid changes in habits have been accompanied by tension” in the streets, the mayor has admitted. “It takes time for everyone to find their place and feel safe,” she added, following road regulations that seek to raise awareness about the shared use of public space. Last summer, posters appeared throughout the city reminding everyone that pedestrians have the priority and that the speed limit for cars is 30 km/h (18 mph).

The city’s plan includes increasing the number of parking spaces for bicycles. The goal is to build more than 130,000 new spots. “Parking at train stations must be developed on a massive scale,” stresses Aymeric Cotard, 29, a member of the association Mieux se déplacer à bicyclette [Better to get around by bike]. One of the large projects that should be completed this year, with 1,200 spaces, is located just behind the Gare du Nord, one of the busiest stations in France. For Cotard, however, it will be insufficient. In the Dutch city of Utrecht, the station has 12,500 spaces for bikes.

The idea is that people who live in the suburbs and take the train daily to work will also use the bicycle once they arrive in Paris. It is one of the main challenges of the coming years, along with facilitating continuous journeys between the capital and its suburbs. “This requires the banlieue cities to do their job and the city of Paris to also improve its entrances, which are inhospitable and unpleasant by bike,” warns Cotard. In addition, it is necessary to provide infrastructure for a flow of cyclists that will be even greater in the future.

The process takes time and has encountered some opposition. But the morphology of the city is changing, adapting to the bike. And, with it, its resilience to the effects of climate change.

Less, better and for longer: Five ways Paris 2024 is delivering more sustainable Games

Paris 2024 , with the first Olympic Games fully aligned with Olympic Agenda 2020 , promises to deliver spectacular Games that are more responsible, more sustainable and more inclusive. The organisers have laid out a cutting-edge plan to halve the Games-related carbon footprint compared to previous Games, with innovative solutions for energy, food, venues, transport and digital services.

To celebrate Earth Day 2024, we are sharing five ways in which Paris 2024 is working to do more with less while creating a lasting legacy.

story-03-featured

1. Thinking ahead: anticipating and avoiding impact

Already at the candidature phase, Paris 2024 committed to reducing the Games carbon footprint by half compared to previous editions. A carbon budget was set which includes all Games planning and operations - from construction to energy and transport, catering and procurement.

  • Targeting a 50 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to the average of London 2012 and Rio 2016, Paris 2024 has addressed the broadest category of emissions, also covering the indirect footprint of the Games (scope 3 emissions) such as spectator travel. This means that Paris 2024 will offer the first Olympic Games aligned with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, adopted in 2015.
  • Paris 2024 also proactively calculated its "material footprint" – a first in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Venue by venue, the organisers created a detailed map of required resources, aiming to minimise them and control their life cycle before, during and after the Games. From spectator seating to tents, beds, chairs, tables and even tennis balls – every asset has been meticulously planned.
  • The Paris 2024 organisers have also avoided generating carbon emissions thanks to an innovative energy model. In addition to using 100 per cent renewable energy during the Games, Paris 2024 is minimising the use of diesel generators. The few generators that will have to be used will be powered by biofuel, H2 or batteries. All venues will be connected to the grid to avoid the use of temporary energy solutions.
  • In addition, Paris 2024 developed a unique methodology for analysing and reducing the Games’ impact on biodiversity and translated this into the design of more sustainable temporary venues.

The Saint-Denis Olympic Aquatic Centre

2. Reducing, renting and reusing

Integrated into every level of the organisation, Paris 2024’s circular economy strategy is based on three key principles: organising the Games with fewer resources, making better use of these resources and ensuring the second life of resources after the Games - before the event even starts.

  • A total of 95 per cent of the Paris 2024 competition venues will be pre-existing or temporary. The rest have been built using low-carbon construction methods.
  • The Aquatics Centre –is designed to serve the local Seine-Saint-Denis community long after the Games. The Centre will largely rely on energy provided by 4,680 square metres of solar panels installed on its rooftop. All seats in the Centre are made from recycled local plastic waste. Wood is at the heart of the building, helping to reduce emissions from construction.
  • The principle of reduction also applies to the interior design of the venues. Tents, chairs, computers and sports equipment - Paris 2024 has reduced and encouraged shared use whenever possible. This approach has made it possible, for example, to reduce the amount of furniture needed for the Games from the initially estimated 800,000 items to 600,000.
  • Out of two million pieces of sports equipment, three-quarters will be rented or provided by sports federations. More than three-quarters of the electronic equipment such as screens, computers and printers are also rented. The same is true for all the stands, tents and bungalows.
  • Thanks to their innovative sourcing strategy, the organisers confirm that 90 per cent of the six million assets will be taken back and reused by partners and The organisers are now defining the second-life plan for the remaining 10 per cent of goods.

3. Regeneration

In line with the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020, the French authorities aim to leverage the Paris 2024 Games to achieve long-term improvements in the living conditions of the local community, particularly in the northeastern suburb, Seine-Saint-Denis.

  • The Aquatics Centre will provide a multi-sports hub for the local community, where currently one in two 11-year-olds does not know how to swim. It will include swimming, climbing and fitness facilities, and areas for individual and team sports.
  • Conceived as an eco-neighbourhood, the Olympic Village will be transformed after the Games into a new residential and business district, providing workplaces for 6,000 people and apartments for an additional 6,000. A quarter of these residences will be reserved for public housing, catering to 40 per cent of the current residents in Saint-Denis who rely on it. Another third will be rented out as affordable housing, managed by government-affiliated agencies and offered to students and low-income workers. The addition of restaurants, shops, and leisure centres will rejuvenate the district, where the unemployment rate currently exceeds 20 per cent.
  • The installation of underground electricity lines and the redevelopment of the Canal Saint Denis, which borders the Olympic Village, are expected to improve the quality of life for residents.
  • The construction of a noise barrier to the south of the A86 motorway, which traverses the suburb from east to west, is aimed at providing relief to residents affected by traffic noise.
  • The Games are also serving as an accelerator to clean the River Seine, with significant investment allocated for pollution remediation, with the aim of enabling all Parisians to enjoy the river from 2025 onwards. The initiative is part of the city's future climate resilience planning.

Paris 2024 Athletes' Village: Rooftop photovoltaic panels will help to satisfy local electricity needs

4. Sustainability on the plate: more plant-based, more local, less plastic

During the Olympic and Paralympic Games, 13 million meals will be delivered in a more responsible manner. Some 120 organisations including farmers, producers, caterers and nutritionists, as well as 200 athletes, were involved in the creation of the Paris 2024 Food vision.

Among other commitments, the organisers are pledging to deliver meals with half the carbon emissions of an average French meal by:

  • doubling the proportion of plant-based ingredients and increasing the plant-based options for everyone, including spectators and the workforce
  • sourcing 80 per cent of ingredients from local agriculture production, with a quarter produced within 250km of the respective venue
  • cutting food waste by better estimating quantities, redistributing, composting or transforming all unconsumed food
  • cutting single-use plastic used in catering by half while reusing 100 per cent of catering equipment and infrastructure after the Games. Worldwide Olympic Partner Coca-Cola will install 700 water and soda fountains across all Paris 2024 sites, and the organisers will install free drinking water points. Spectators will be allowed to enter all venues with their own reusable bottles, a notable exception to existing French regulations.

Paris 2024: High ambitions for lower-carbon Games

5. Transport: shorter distances and lower carbon

The Paris 2024 organisers have structured the Games to leverage an extensive existing public transport network, to be reinforced by more than 400km of new bike lanes.

  • More than 80 per cent of the Olympic venues are situated within 10km of the Olympic Village, minimising travel time for athletes.
  • All venues are accessible by public transport. Public transport operators plan to expand the bus, metro and train services in the Paris region by 15 per cent compared to regular summer traffic.
  • The vehicle fleet catering to athletes and the accredited participants is set to include electric, hybrid and hydrogen-powered vehicles provided by Worldwide Olympic Partner Toyota. In an effort to further reduce impact, the fleet used will be optimised, with about 40 per cent fewer vehicles compared to previous Games.

Olympic Football (Soccer) Teams Highlights:

  • S. Women’s National Team: The most successful women’s football team of all time returns for their 8th Olympic Games. The four-time FIFA World Cup champion and four-time gold medal winners look to redeem themselves after a disappointing performance in the 2023 FIFA World Cup.
  • Colombia Women’s National Team: After a historic performance at the 2023 FIFA World Cup, which got them to the Quarter-Finals, Colombia returns to the Olympic Games after being absent in Tokyo 2020. With rising stars Linda Caicedo and Catalina Usme, Colombia hopes to impress once again and have a solid shot at the podium.
  • Argentina Men’s National Team: The current winner of the FIFA World Cup, Argentina has won two consecutive gold medals at the Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008. In Tokyo 2020, they left the tournament in the group stage, but with a new team and the excitement of being world champions, Argentina is looking to dethrone Brazil and beat France yet again, now in Paris 2024.
  • Dominican Republic Men’s National Team: For the first time in history and after shocking the soccer world, the Dominican Republic makes its Olympic debut stage, where they’ll face Spain and Egypt in the group stage.

Hispanic Athlete Capsules:

  • Alexa Moreno (Mexico) – Gymnastics: Now in her third Olympic Games, Moreno got close to the podium in Tokyo 2020, reaching 4th place in the Vault. Nonetheless, Moreno won the hearts of millions due to her perseverance and dedication to the sport. Once bullied for her weight, Moreno has shattered expectations and is now Mexico’s flagship athlete, having recently won a gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Championships as well as three golds at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
  • Mijaín López (Cuba) – Wrestling: Cuba’s headliner who has conquered gold in the last four Olympic Games. If López were to win gold in Paris 2024, it would make him the first athlete in history to win gold in the same individual event at five Olympic Games.

Rojas was also a silver medal winner in Rio 2016 and more recently, she won gold at the 2022 World Championship in Eugene and again in 2023 in Budapest. She’s considered Venezuela’s top athlete to watch.
  • Victor Montalvo (USA) – Breakdancing: With breakdancing making its Olympic debut, this Mexican American is the two-time defending Red Bull BC One World Champion as well as a gold winner at the 2019 and 2022 World Games.
