Despite some general rules that apply regardless of the country, industry or company, t here are also country-based CV requirements to follow that shouldn’t be ignored. Today, we are presenting you with both general and location-tailored CV insights and tips that will help you shape the perfect CV.

When it comes to writing your CV, appearance is key! A CV that is untidy, disorganised, and too long is extremely off-putting to recruiters and hiring managers. Although your experience may be incredible, the appearance of your CV could be damaging the chances of your CV being read by the recruiter.

Dos and Dont's:

The cv dos , keep it concise.

Use keywords and bullet points and only include relevant and valuable information. You don't have a lot of space to sell yourself, so only include relevant information. 

Use The Reverse-Chronological Resume Format

In most of Europe, Recruiters want to see your most recent experience at the top. This helps them to see what you did last and from there they can continue reading your past experiences, qualifications and skills . 

Keep it neat and well-formatted

A neat, well-formatted CV will be a lot more appealing to a recruiter and should hopefully encourage them to continue reading. 

Use a professional font style and size

Use a clear, professional font such as Arial, Tahoma, Century Gothic, Times New Roman, etc. These fonts are easy for the recruiter to read. Stick to a font size of 12. It will make the recruiter's life easier. 

The CV Don'ts

Include too much irrelevant information.

Keep your CV relevant to the job you are applying for, you don't want to bore the recruiter. Only write about what's necessary for them to know about you in order to give you the job. 

Forget to update your contact details

This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make: you may have a WINNING resume, but if the recruiter has no way to contact you - what's the use!

Always make sure to include your current home address, updated phone number, and an email address you check regularly. 

Add too many colours and distractions

Although it is nice to think outside of the box and to make your CV stand out, there is a thin line between adding your own personal touch  through one or two colours and adding too many distractions.

As we have previously mentioned, your CV needs to look neat and well-formatted or the recruiter will discard it.

Make your CV longer than 2 pages

There's absolutely no use waffling on and adding unnecessary text just to make your CV longer. The more concise, the better.

Stick to a 2-page maximum - depending on how experienced you are, sometimes one page is best to keep your experience relevant! 

Country Specific CV Requirements in Europe

Although these rules apply to most if not all European countries , it's important to check what is expected in the country you are in or plan on moving to.

Different countries have different rules and expectations,  and it's important to familiarise yourself with these to increase your chances of employment in your dream destination!  

Spain, Portugal & Greece

CV length? 1-2 pages

Include a photograph of yourself? Yes

Include personal information? (Age/Exact Location)  Yes

We usually assign meticulousness and organisation to the Western EU countries, but recruiters from Spain, Portugal, and Greece also highlight the importance of a well-structured CV. Be as detailed as possible in the headlines, but don't write too much in the job descriptions - you can always elaborate more on that during the interview, so keep it concise in the CV. But the structure is everything!

Germany, Holland & Belgium

Include personal information? (Age/Exact Location) Yes 

Arrange your CV in reverse chronological order with education first, followed by qualifications and then work experience. 

Hungary, Bulgaria & Slovakia

Companies in those Eastern Eurpean countries very often use ATS (Applicant Tracking System). It's software designed to pick out the most relevant CVs based on the presence of specific keywords before a human recruiter even has access to them. Make sure to include keywords relevant to the position you're applying for in your CV. 

United Kingdom

Include a photograph of yourself? No

Include personal information? (Age/Exact Location) No

British recruiters put a strong emphasis on equal treatment of all candidates. That's why they advise against including a photo in your CV. They want to create a workplace free of bias and prejudice, and a picture in their belief might impact someone's judgement. HR Managers are generally not allowed to pick candidates based on their age, gender, or appearance, so they'd rather avoid seeing the face behind the document before the interview. 

Scandinavia:  Norway, Sweden, Finland & Denmark

Arrange your CV in reverse chronological order with the relevant, recent experiences at the top, followed by qualifications and then education.

How to be brief

This example  conveys important information  by using simple language and avoiding unnecessary details. The candidate has effectively communicated their skills and experience without overwhelming the reader with information.

How to Submit Your Europass CV

The method of submission may vary depending on the employer’s requirements, but the following guidelines will help ensure a smooth process:

  • Save the file in the desired format : Ensure you save it in the appropriate file format. Typically, employers prefer PDF or Word (.docx) files.

What is the structure of the European CV format

The European standard CV format isn’t miles away from most other styles of UK CV . As well as listing your contact details, it includes dedicated sections for your experience or work history, key skills and capabilities, and your all-important education. Each section has its own requirements to be aware of, in line with the requirements of a European style CV.

Contact details

[At the top of your European CV, contact details are a must. List your address, telephone number, and email address alongside your name. With this CV format, European recruiters may also be looking for your date of birth, gender, nationality, and even a picture – so this is the place to include them.]

Work history

[List your previous jobs with a few bullet points about your main responsibilities and achievements. You should keep these responsibilities concise to stop your European CV becoming too long. You should list your most recent (or current) position first, so recruiters can work backwards through your career.]

[This section appears much higher up in the CV format for European countries, sometimes coming after the contact details but most often following your work history. Like your work history, you should use reverse-chronological order with the most recent qualifications first.]

[When writing a European CV in English, your skills section should be broken down into:

  • Mother tongue – The language you speak naturally and natively
  • Language – List language skills levels on your European CV, ideally using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

What about a personal statement?

When it comes to the European CV, English applicants may wonder where to add their professional summary or personal statement . This is one of the main points of difference between a European CV and its English counterpart. Put simply, the European CV format does not include a personal statement. Recruiters are looking for facts about your work history and skills rather than a descriptive paragraph about yourself.

That way, you can fit in various skills , responsibilities, and qualifications without overwhelming recruiters. When to use a European CV format

As the name suggests, the European CV format works wonders throughout the continent. But not everyone follows the same path through their career, or through life. As a result, you may be unsure when, exactly, the European CV in English is suitable. 

When you live and work in Europe

Whether you were relocated by your current employer or simply upped sticks and now require work, it’s important that you update your CV according to where you’ll be working. In both cases, your previous CV may have been a little different and seemingly worked a treat. But don’t cut corners. A little more effort in adjusting your CV to the European standard CV format will pay dividends in the long run.

When you want to work abroad

On the other hand, you might still be based in the UK but looking to secure work before moving overseas. Again, recruiters will be expecting a CV like our European format example. You might think that including a personal statement and other UK conventions will set you apart. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Unless it’s specified otherwise, you should use the European CV layout.

Applying for a European job at a UK company

From AstraZeneca and BP to Unilever and HSBC, there are plenty of UK companies that have expanded beyond the British Isles. But don’t be fooled into thinking that means they don’t want a European CV format. Recruiters will still be working to the conventions of the country they’re in – and will be from that county themselves in many cases.

When you’re applying in English

Similar to the point above, some applicants can get thrown off by the idea of a European CV in English. If it’s in English, should it use a conventional UK or US layout? Or if it’s European, should it be written in German, Spanish, or another native language? English is used as a lingua franca (common, bridge, or mutual language) by countries throughout Europe. As a result, there are plenty of instances where a CV with European format and English content is required.

When it’s requested on the job listing

Another scenario when a European CV format is best is any time it’s requested on the job listing. Aside from all of the circumstances above, this could occur when a European company is hiring within another country. That could be the UK or somewhere further afield, outside of Europe entirely.

When you’re a student

Because it pushes education up the pecking order, a European academic CV is a great option for students or recent graduates. The European CV format for students can be used when applying for part-time or summer jobs throughout Europe. It’s also ideal for entry-level jobs after graduating abroad.

When not to use the European CV format

You shouldn’t use the European format if you’re applying for jobs within the UK, even if you are live in, work in, or come from a European country. Unless it’s specific on the job listing, as above, recruiters will not be expecting a European style CV. As such, they will be far more likely to put your CV to one side when they don’t see the standard layout with a personal statement .

Before we take a look at the Europass CV, it’s helpful to understand what Europass is as a whole.

In line with the principle of free movement of persons, goods and services within the European Union, Europass is an initiative which seeks to simplify the process of studying or working abroad for European jobseekers. With the understanding that no qualifications are the same in each country, Europass makes it easier for employers to compare and evaluate qualifications and for jobseekers to present their skills and experience in a clear and transparent way.

While Europass is a handy tool for creating your CV , the resume layout is very basic. On the other hand, Jobseeker offers more options for a nice layout. You also have the option to create your CV in multiple languages. If a job description specifically requests a Europass CV, then you will need to use the official website to create one. Otherwise, it is not necessary.

The European Skills Passport

The Europass CV is one of five documents that makes up the European Skills Passport:

Europass language passport, europass mobility, europass certificate supplement, europass diploma supplement.

The Europass CV is a template consisting of standard CV sections: personal details, the position you’re applying for, professional experience, education and training, skills , and additional information (publications, presentations, projects, awards and honours,

references).

This structured layout saves you having to look up the CV conventions for different countries and getting your qualifications recognised by different authorities.

To create a Europass CV, go to the Europass website, and create a Europass profile . Once you’ve completed this step, you can create your CV in as many languages as you wish. However, you’ll still need to translate the body of your CV yourself.

The Europass Language Passport is a self-assessment tool to assess and evaluate your language skills, and to present these skills and language qualifications in a way that is understandable to employers.

Based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) , the European Language Passport is a useful way to explain to employers the different skill levels for the languages you speak: listening and reading, speaking and writing. Letters are used to describe language proficiency at six levels:

  • A – Basic user

A1 – Breakthrough or beginner

A2 – Waystage or elementary

  • B – Independent user

B1 – Threshold or intermediate

B2 – Vantage or upper intermediate

  • C – Proficient user

C1 – Effective operational efficiency

C2 – Mastery or proficiency

Breaking down your skills this way helps them understand whether you are able to use your language skills in a professional environment.

You can also list language courses you’ve taken or any intercultural experience which may have boosted your language skills. If you’ve had a bilingual upbringing, taken part in language tandems or even just lived with a bilingual housemate, it can be difficult to showcase the skills gained in a standard CV. This is where the Europass Language Passport helps.

Bear in mind that the European Language Passport is now integrated into the Europass CV in a section called ‘Language Skills’.

If you’ve studied or worked in a European country, you can request a Europass Mobility report from the academic institution or employer. This is a document that captures and communicates the skills and knowledge acquired from studying or working abroad.

It is not possible to create this document yourself. You will need to ask the academic institution or company organising the placement to register with the National Europass Centre in your country. The host partner (school or organisation) will also need to register and complete the necessary information. Both parties will also need to provide an electronic signature.

The Europass Certificate Supplement helps employers to understand vocational qualifications (practical, work-based qualifications) which can be challenging to explain. It provides information on:

  • the course content
  • the level of the qualification and how the grading system works
  • the education system in which the qualification was issued
  • the institution that issued the qualification

Note that this document does not replace official certificates. For further information on which institutions can issue the European Language Supplement, contact your National Europass Centre .

The Europass Diploma Supplement describes the knowledge and skills if you have graduated from higher education (higher professional education or university). It expands on official degrees and diplomas, making them easier to understand by employers or teachers abroad.

As with the Europass Certificate Supplement, the Europass Diploma Supplement is not intended to replace official degrees or diplomas.

It is important to note that some universities and awarding bodies issue both supplements automatically while others do so on request. Some may not even issue them at all. To be on the safe side, always request a Certificate or Diploma Supplement before you complete your course as you know when you might need it.

CV in another language

Do you want to create a CV in a language other than English , but haven’t specifically been asked for a Europass CV? Let Jobseeker help you. Professional translation

If you speak the language fluently, you can write your CV in the respective foreign language yourself. On the other hand, if your grammar is a little shaky if you’re feeling none too confident about your language abilities, the better option is to have your CV translated by a professional translator or a native speaker. Whichever language you’re applying in, it’s essential that there are no spelling, grammatical or lexical (vocabulary mistakes).

While there are various translation tools available online, these are usually only helpful for translating a word here or there or for translating from a foreign language into your own language to get the gist of a text. However, as far as translating whole sentences into a foreign language goes, they’re not 100% accurate, they ‘learn’ from other people’s translations – good or bad.

Now, let me tell you everything you need to know about the Europass CV:

1. What is a Europass CV?

The Europass CV format is one of the better-known CV formats in the European Union. You can create a Europass CV online using a CV creator currently supporting 29 languages. The Europass CV format is the European Commission’s attempt at creating a unified framework for job applicants.

It is indeed very common throughout the EU—this is both its greatest strength and one of its greatest weaknesses. Being common means that employers are very familiar with it. It also means that a Europass CV is absolutely not a good way to stand out from the crowd.

I agree that a Europass CV is much better than a badly written, badly formatted CV. But when applying for a job, you’re not interested in how you fare compared to the worst applicants or even the average applicant, you’re competing against the best. 

2. Who is a Europass CV for?

A Europass CV is for anyone who wants to apply for a job (or entry into a study program) in the European Union or Europe more broadly. This includes both European citizens applying within their home countries or other European countries and people from outside the EU applying within the EU.

It is also an especially attractive proposition for anyone who’s unsure of what to include in their CV and how to lay everything out on the page. But, in my opinion, the main problem is that the Europass template doesn’t give complete guidance for all the CV sections , and some of the guidance it does give misses the mark.

3. How to create a Europass CV

Creating a Europass CV is a relatively simple process. All you have to do is follow these steps:

  • Go to the Europass CV online creator .
  • Register on the site and create a profile if you want to be able to save your information for later use, as well as have access to all the available tools. 
  • Fill in each section and click “save” when you’re done.

Here are some other tips you might find useful:

  • If anything is unclear, try clicking on the blue “i” information icons. 
  • Click on the blue “+” icons to add more entries to a section. 
  • At a minimum, add an about me, work experience, education, and at least one skills section to your Europass CV. 
  • Aim to add two or three additional sections after these.

Once you’re done, choose one of the four templates. On the left of the screen, you can turn off the Europass CV logo (I recommend that you do). You can also select an accent color and set the text size. Choose the largest text size that doesn’t push your CV onto a second page.

Drop a CV section if you can’t fit your whole CV on a single page with the small text option selected. I've noticed that this is one of the major problems with the Europass CV template: there’s a lot of wasted space, meaning you can fit much less in. This is an issue because, in Europe, a one-page CV is preferred .

4. Europass CV: pros and cons

You’ve come across many of the pros and cons of a Europass CV already, but let me put everything out there and weigh it up. On the plus side, the Europass CV creator tool is totally free to use. If you have absolutely no idea of what you’re doing, it’ll help you get a half-decent CV together fairly quickly.

Here you see a pro turning into a con already. It’s true that the Europass CV template is pretty decent. You’ll find a lot of scathing criticism about Europass CVs online, but I'll be honest, they're not that bad. I think that the templates are better than what most people can cobble together on their own.

So what is the main problem with a Europass CV? It’s not that employers see so many of them that they all start to become a bit of a blur for them. It’s not that the templates waste a lot of space and look dated. The main problem is that they’re not as effective as some other options out there.

Trust me: a “half-decent”, or “better than average” CV isn’t going to get you an interview. You’re not competing with the worst CVs out there, you’re competing with the best. The good news? You can do it, there’s nothing standing in your way. All it takes is the right know-how, and that can be learned.

There are two ways in which a Europass CV could be better: the content and the template. The content is entirely in your hands. The advice given throughout the Europass CV creator isn’t leading you toward the most effective CV possible.

1. Pick a template that stands out

As I've mentioned before, Europass CV templates are okay—but they’re far from the best. What you want is a template that enables you to fit a lot of information onto one page and is visually pleasing, as well as standing out in the crowd.

2. Use the right formatting

Get the format right by using one-inch margins, a readable CV font set to 11–12 points, and clear headings for each section. When listing information, stick to the reverse-chronological format: meaning most recent information goes first, followed by older entries. 

Save your CV as a PDF and keep a .docx copy handy. Trust me: you never know what the recruiter will prefer.

A CV profile is a short paragraph at the top of the page. Aim for 2–4 sentences and focus on catching the recruiter’s attention with your professional or academic achievements.

4. Describe your work experience and education

If you’re a seasoned professional, put the CV work experience section right under the profile. If you’re writing a fresher resume, start with your education and include any work experience below your schooling. Easy, right? 

Just like in your profile, focus on outlining your achievements impactfully. Stick only to relevant information, and include the dates (of employment or attendance) and location with every entry. 

5. Include skills section

After work and education, add a separate CV section for your key skills . If you went with one of our templates or another high-end option, you might be able to put these in a neat sidebar. 

Include up to 10 of the skills most important to succeeding in the role for which you’re applying. Follow my advice and check the job ad for keywords, too—try to list skills that the employer is looking for, specifically. A blend of soft skills (e.g., communication, teamwork) and hard skills (e.g., technical knowledge needed for your job) is the best way to go. 

6. Pick some additional sections

Show your personality and drive by including a couple of the following: 

  • Licences and certifications
  • Foreign language skills
  • Memberships in professional associations
  • Volunteer work
  • Hobbies and interests (but only if they show your work-related skills in some way)

Just make sure only to include things that are relevant to your role and not too far in the past. A Microsoft Office 95 certification won’t be of interest to employers!

How to prepare a European-style resume

Ah, the thrill of the hunt. The job hunt , that is. There’s nothing quite like it, especially when your residency in a foreign country depends on it. High stakes or go home! That’s a motto to live by, amiright?

When I first moved to Germany, I was more or less recruited without so much as a glance at my CV (they needed a computer scientist who knew Latin – it’s safe to say the competition was not stiff) – but the second job search was a bit more…involved. A lot more research, applications, interviews, and even a few rejections. But what’s worse than a rejection? A SILENT rejection (here’s looking at you, Google Paris). Not even getting an interview in the first place is way worse.

A compelling CV the first step in helping your potential employer see themselves hiring a foreign national, with all the extra hoops and paperwork it entails. You have to fight against local candidates with familiar credentials and better networking opportunities – to say it’s an uphill battle would be an understatement.

Here are some tips for brushing up your résumé for an international audience, lessons I learned when applying for jobs in Europe, and what I want to see when I’m looking at applications at my company.

Brushing up your résumé for an international audience

Loosley speaking, a résumé is a single page and a CV is more than one page. In the American sense of the world, a CV contains every tiny detail of your life: every job you’ve had since you were sixteen, every award you won in high school, every time you blew your nose – it’s all in there.

Europeans, however, take a middle ground between the American résumé in all its brevity and the American CV in all its verbosity. The result is a CV that is no more than two pages in length, unless you’re a fancy with papers spilling over onto a third page. This document should detail not only work experience, but all the other qualities you bring to the table. Oh, and a couple of extra personal details .

1. Add your picture

Although it’s not legally required, most employers would like to see a picture of you. This picture should:

  • Go in the top corner of the first page of your CV, and measure about an inch by an inch.
  • Be of professional quality, passport style, in color.
  • No selfies, no party photos to appear “fun”. This is business!*

* - Full disclosure, my CV has a Photobooth selfie and I’ve had plenty of success with it. In retrospect though, it’s a bit embarrassing 😅

International applicants have to do a lot more to impress an employer and get an offer (and a relocation package). Here's how to stand out when applying for a job online and show that you're worth the extra effort.

2. Include the languages you speak

Well, if you speak any foreign languages, chances are you’ve been putting it on your résumé for a long time as a badge of honor! But now that you’re moving to another country, it’s good to demonstrate some interest (and better yet, proficiency ) in the local language. Even if you can’t speak it fluently, you can still list your proficiency level using Common European Framework of Reference for Languages .

My languages are listed on my CV like this:

English (native — US Citizen), German (conversational)

Which brings me to the next point…

3. Indicate your country of citizenship

Tell them where you’re from! People are applying for jobs in Europe from all over the world, and just because you studied at an American university doesn’t automatically mean that you’re a US citizen.

Some countries are easier to hire from than others. Disclosing your citizenship is important so the hiring manager knows up front what kind of effort it’ll take to get you there and how soon they have to set the process in motion.

How much money do I need before moving abroad? This is one of the first questions many aspiring expats ask themselves, and the answer might be different than you think!

4. Get your résumé translated

This one heavily depends on the type of work and work environment you are getting yourself into. Most workplaces populated with expats will be English-friendly, and therefore an English-language CV is important.

Chances are that if your résumé needs to be translated, you’re going to have to learn to work in a foreign language. In France, for example, the startup scene is criticized for being very French-focused, making it difficult for them to successfully import foreign talent. Therefore, CVs for French companies should absolutely be in French, and you’re pretty darn likely to find yourself learning French on the job to keep up. Germany, on the other hand, is pretty forgiving if you don’t know German – sure, they might expect you to learn it, but most of the time, international companies and startups are perfectly content with an English CV.

That said, if you do translate your CV, have it proofread by a native speaker . Even if you’re feeling plucky after dominating your introductory French class, nothing looks less professional than obvious typos or grammatical errors on a CV.

5. Use A4 format

We Americans like to do things differently. We like our feet, fahrenheit, and (American) football – and our paper sizes are no exception. Especially if you’re applying somewhere where bureaucracy has a strong foothold, paper format is critical , because your CV is definitely going to end up in a European-sized folder somewhere. Make sure it fits, use an A4 format for your CV.

6. Go over two pages – if you need it

While more than two pages for an American résumé is an unforgivable sin , the same is not true for a European-style CV. A second page is warranted so long as your first page can hold the readers’ attention long enough to bring them to the second page. Presentations, publications, skills, hobbies, languages spoken, and professional internet presence are all good candidates for getting bumped to page two.

What I look for in an applicant

From time to time, I’m involved in the hiring process for web developers at my company. Our immediate team comprises people from five countries and a huge range of educational and professional backgrounds. Here are the some things that I look for from all applicants on their CVs:

  • Well-proofread, grammatically correct CV in English. – Since English is the business language of the company, being comfortable working in English is critical. Plus, an error-ridden CV is a sure sign of sloppiness.
  • Genuine expression of intent from the candidate. – Hiring international applicants can take a long time, especially if they’re not from the EU, and even more especially if they’re from a tricker country like Russia or Egypt. There’s no use expending the extra effort if the applicant isn’t going to commit.
  • What is their current living situation, and what will it take to get them here. – Do they have a work permit? Are they in Europe? When can they relocate?

These things tell me that an applicant is serious off the bat, and worth the time to evaluate their skills and work history. Communicating that you are not only qualified for the job but prepared to start in a reasonable time frame is very appealing!

With all of that said – don’t stress about it!

Having the perfect, European format résumé might be important for fancy financial jobs at Umbrella Corp, but most places won’t expect a foreigner to format their CV perfectly like a local. Focus instead on compelling content and organizing the information clearly, and you’ve got a better shot of getting the attention of someone who spends way too much time poring over résumés.

Living in North America, it is very easy to get used to the idea of using almost the same type of resume, or curriculum vitae (CV) as it is typically referred to in Europe, no matter where you apply for work. While some differences can be found in resume styles depending on job sector, a resume that is suitable for Utah is generally going to be suitable for Ontario or New York. Historically, that has not been the case in Europe.

American Résumé VS European CV: 5 Key Differences to Know

On face value, CVs and resumes might sound like different names for the same document, but there are several key differences. American resumes and European CVs are very different in terms of their layout and purpose.

This article discusses five key differences between CVs and resumes and differing attitudes towards them in Europe and the US.

CVs VS Résumés: What’s in a name?

CVs and resumes are similar, but not exactly the same. The term CV, which stands for the Latin Curriculum Vitae or ‘course of my life’ in English, is more widely-used in the UK, but is also used interchangeably with ‘résumé’ in Europe.

In the US, CVs are used, but only required for applications to educational or government roles. Resumes are used to apply for everything else.

CVs tend to be longer than resumes. They include more sections, such as a full educational history, volunteering details, and supplementary information such as hobbies or interests.

Common consensus suggests that the ideal length of a European CV is between two to three appropriately sized and spaced A4 pages.

An American résumé is a little more abridged. Whereas a CV might include information not directly connected to professional achievements (such as early academic history or volunteering), a résumé is only focused on information related to your professional life.

This will be limited to relevant work history, recent education or your most senior qualification, and skills or attainment directly connected to your career path. An American résumé is also a little shorter, ranging from one side of A4 for someone in the early stages of their career to two pages for someone a little more experienced.

Differences in American resumes and European CVs

A key place to begin in discussing the difference between European and US resumes is considering attitudes towards these documents.

In Europe, a CV or résumé is considered a detailed, thorough document supporting a wider suite of application information. It is commonly submitted with a cover letter and sometimes a portfolio including internship or practical training information.

In the US, a résumé is shorter and more like a succinct summary of the most relevant information for a particular job application. Therefore, it is common for American applicants to have a few different versions of a résumé , whereas European candidates might have only one document used for multiple job applications.

There are some similarities and differences in layout between American resumes and European CVs. The next section explores these differences.

  • In Europe, a professional in the creative industry might include a detailed CV showcasing a comprehensive list of all projects, exhibitions, and publications, adhering to the European preference for thoroughness.
  • Conversely, in the U.S., a tech professional would likely submit a concise, 1-page resume emphasizing specific achievements and skills relevant to the job applied for, reflecting the American emphasis on brevity and relevance.

Personal information and photographs

In Europe, personal information shared on a CV varies a little from country to country.  

Some personal information is commonly found on a CV, but the advice from employers is to usually limit it to nationality or the right to work in a specific country. No other information is requested.

Adding a photo onto a European CV is commonplace and often encouraged, as long as the photo is professionally taken, and head-and-shoulders only.

In the US, hiring managers and candidates must be a little more careful with personal information on a résumé as anything that can allude to discriminating factors such as gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, or race can—and does—result in lawsuits. Photos on a résumé are generally seen to take up space and are therefore avoided.

Personal statement

In Europe, a personal statement added at the top of the CV is an expectation, and must be written carefully and professionally , supplementing the cover letter (also a common and expected part of any European job application). This personal statement is a paragraph long and is typically written in the third person.

In the US, personal statements are commonly left off resumes, unless the reason for a career move (such as a change in industry or specialism) needs a little more explanation. Even in these cases, personal statements are a little briefer and will only be a short paragraph of two to three lines.

Work experience

In the EU, there is more space on a CV to elaborate on work experience. Candidates can write about each experience in more detail, covering job duties, achievements, and tying this into their general profile. Professional training, internships, and volunteering opportunities will also be included.

Many people keep their whole life’s working experience on their CV, although it is more common these days to cut off earlier work experience to keep the document within three pages.

In the US, a traditional résumé will only focus on what is most relevant. Therefore, the work experience section is a lot more abridged. It is commonplace for candidates to concentrate their resumes on work experience directly related to the job they are applying for.

This work experience is typically written out in only a few short bullet points, or a few lines of text for each role. Less relevant experience or early-years’ experience is left off the résumé completely.

Education and skills

In Europe, the education section of a CV is quite important, so you are expected to include all education from secondary school onwards, including grades (or grade summaries) and the details of the educational institution attended.

Training courses or non-academic qualifications are added if they are work-related.

The brief nature of US resumes means that education is kept to what is relevant for the role being applied for. High school qualifications are only included if the candidate hasn’t studied for any subsequent qualifications. Typically, only the most advanced qualification(s) is added onto a résumé.

Any non-work-related qualifications are usually left off an American résumé, unless there is a relevant reason to include them.

In the EU, skills and interests section is a common part of CV and therefore can be quite long. Skills are split into sections, such as technical skills, languages, and software or IT. Interests are considered to add an element of personality to a CV and are added at the end of the document.

In the US, skills and interests are still included and expected, but these sections are kept a little shorter. Interests are welcomed, but the approach is to make them somewhat relevant to professional experience or leave them off entirely.

In both Europe and the US, references are now being omitted from CVs and resumes due to space constraints and various data protection guidelines requiring that permission is sought from both the candidate and referee before the reference is followed up.

Along with references, the line ‘references available on request’ is also omitted. It’s generally expected that you would enter a recruitment process with the references prepared, in case you are asked for them.
