Psychology Personal Statement Example 2 Psychology surrounds us. I often observe my class mates and ask myself why they are so different, struggling with attention or eating disorders. While looking for reasons, I also want to find ways to help them and I am confident that psychology will give me the means to do so...

Politics and International Relations Personal Statement Example 4 The era in which we live goes through constant turmoil and shifting powers. Not a day goes by without a change somewhere on our planet, which in turn has an effect on yet another change to come elsewhere...

French and Arabic Personal Statement Example In studying French and Arabic, I am eager to compare two mutually influential languages and cultures, particularly their overlapping history and its cultural representations. I decided to defer my entry to retake my Maths A2 and plan to turn this to my advantage by working and living in France, putting what I've already learnt of the French language and culture into practice...

Maths Personal Statement Example 3 I am extremely enthusiastic about my decision to read Mathematics at university as for as long as I can remember Maths has always been my main academic interest. From learning to count at primary school, to studying calculus towards my Mathematics A level, I have found this subject intriguing due to its obvious application to the real world...

Environmental Science Personal Statement Example 1 I must describe as undetermined the moment from which my compassion began to aim predominantly towards the natural environment and all the elements that compose it. With the passing of the years since my existence here on Earth, I have been able to witness behind the transparent glass of “development”, how our relationship with nature is becoming more noxious; on having assumed us with the right to take a big part of our Earth as if it was completely within our jurisdiction...

Economics and PPE Personal Statement Example My aspiration to study economics at both advanced and degree level has stemmed from my lasting interest in current affairs and world development. These issues require an application of economics in real-life situations and can be related to many diverse subjects such as politics, philosophy and psychology...

Physics Personal Statement Example 4 The elegance of the scientific subjects, in particular physics is what has established my eagerness for a deeper insight into the subject. What sets physics apart from the other sciences, in my opinion, is that it can be practically applied to all instances of life...

Architecture Personal Statement Example 1 I believe that having a visual stimulus in your environment is important. For example, if I'm walking down the street I want to see an eclectic mix of buildings that I find exciting to look at, rather than rows of uniform houses...

Law and International Relations Personal Statement Example 1 Through my insight into the UN's work I have learned that having declarations about Human Rights does not mean they are obeyed and automatically enforced. Law is not static, but develops all the time. It is part of everyday life, as in Berlin everyone is confronted with the issue of asylum seekers...

Geography Personal Statement Example 1 At first glance, my A Level choices appear scientifically biased, but they underpin key topics studied in Geography. I enjoy investigating the theories of global economies, population and poverty. The mathematics I have studied enables me to manipulate raw data meaningfully...

Economics Personal Statement Example 5 Choosing an undergraduate degree in economics is a result of my deep seated curiosity to know why economies are they way they are; why oil prices in my country, Pakistan, rapidly fluctuate whereas economies like USA and China continue to strengthen despite recessions...

Geography Personal Statement Example 2 In a dynamic world, the study of geography is increasingly important. The diversity of the subject and the interaction between the physical environment and human population is becoming even more evident with climate change and globalisation influencing our everyday lives...

German and English Literature Personal Statement Example Email correspondence with a friend in Berlin during the celebrations of the twentieth anniversary of the German reunification gave me an insight into the importance and relevance of Germany’s past both within the country itself, and throughout Europe...

Scottish History Personal Statement Example “Swap Access to Degree Studies” Whenever I walk through the village where I live in Polmont, and look just beyond the Westquarter valley where the tree line of the Callendar woods are visible, I close my eyes, and I am transported back to one of the most fateful days in Scotland’s history...

Biology Personal Statement Example 8 My interest in Biology started at a very young age due to spending a lot of time outdoors. I am intrigued by the functioning of living organisms and how they are all linked; one small change in one species will affect a whole range of others...

Plant Biotechnology Personal Statement Example I have became fascinated with Science in my early childhood. It came from the first glance through the microscope at Paramecium. Since that time I have shown a pertinacity to learn about the world imperceptible by human eyes...

Economics and Politics/Geography Personal Statement Example My desire to study Economics in combination with the Social Sciences stems primarily from my interest in these fields but also from the fact that these two disciplines compliment each other exceptionally well...

Pure Mathematics Personal Statement Example Mathematics is beautiful to me because of the deep and meaningful ideas touched upon by it, the vastness of these ideas, the clearness and elegance of their representation. Mathematics gives me the ability to apply knowledge by approaching things logically, and thinking clearly...

Civil Engineering Personal Statement Example 8 From the start of my second year at high school a subject which was introduced to me was graphic communication. This immediately caught my attention as the technical drawing aspect of the course was thoroughly enjoyable To further investigate more about this subject I chose to do graphic communication at a higher level which broadened my experience in technical drawing and introduced me to computer aided drawing which inspired me to research different courses related to this subject and doing so clearly confirmed my desire to study this course...

Psychology Personal statement Example 46 Marathon, madness or pleasure? What motivates a person to run 42 195 meters under a burning sun, on a hot summer’s day with a temperature of around 40 degrees Celsius? Well, it is a justified question if you’re not a fan of long distance running or if you are a student in the field of psychology...

Medicine Personal Statement Example 43 The ever-evolving nature of medical science and the certainty that we will know more about the many different healthcare practices has inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. My dedication to studying medicine has been confirmed by the experience I have gained in different hospitals and practices and I look forward to the academic discipline and challenges that will arise...

Geography Personal Statement Example 12 Considering my interests and hobbies, I could have chosen one of any number of subjects as my main area of interest, but there is no other subject which captures my imagination so completely as Geography, and I see links to it in almost every aspect of my life, both within and outside of my studies...

Economics Personal Statement Example (International Student) 1 The subject of economics, which I seek to study in the coming years, was first introduced to me through the United States Academic Decathlon, a ten-subject team competition for high schools. Over the past two years I have devoted hundreds of hours to independent preparation for this competition...

Law and Business Personal Statement Example (International Student) From an early age, law has always been number one priority in my vision of the future. Probably because of my father's profession (he is Head of the Regional Criminal Police), I have always been intrigued by Criminology and the idea of analysing and solving tangled cases...

Mathematics and Engineering Personal Statement Example Questions regarding the reason for my liking of mathematics have only one answer: mathematical logic and concepts contribute to a practical approach in every aspect of life. It is the diversity and universal applicability of this subject that encourages me to delve further and study it in depth...

Languages/Linguistics Personal Statement Example My decision to study languages at University stems from a fascination of the complexity of language and the changes which languages go through. As I am Scottish, I often speak in a regional dialect and I find myself engrossed as to why people speak in dialects and why speakers of the same language can have difficulties understanding each other...

Medicine Personal Statement Example 48 Given that over ninety nine percent of the body consists of just six elements, it is hard to imagine the human body as an intricately synchronised and immensely complex machine. Yet, it has done well to puzzle even the brightest minds in history-but I am drawn to a challenge; I cannot think of anything else more fascinating to work with...

Geography Personal Statement Example (Human/Environmental) The possibility of the human race’s days being numbered by our destructive lifestyles, as planted in my mind by Al Gore’s sensationalised and controversial ‘The Inconvenient Truth’, has fuelled my interest in the global warming phenomenon, forcing me to question society’s reluctance to tackle it and realise the worldwide impact of each of our daily lives...

Medicine Personal Statement Example 53 I have asked myself many times what it takes to be a great doctor, but like many questions there is never a straight answer. Keeping an open mind with regards to my career has meant that I have been able to pinpoint the one field which has fascinated me unlike any other, medicine...

International Relations/Politics Personal Statement Example 1 Earth is an ecosystem consisting of uncountable amount of substances, organisms and climatic changes, and of fragile relations between all of them. As a slight increase of global temperature causes great changes around the world, like melting of humongous ice glaciers which lead to flooding areas many miles away, as cutting of few trees may cause significant change in the population of one type of animal which destroys balance between other kinds living in the same forest, thus the human world today consists of the same political ecosystem with both fragile and strong relationships between different nations, countries and people themselves...

Archaeology and Anthropology Personal Statement Example 2 As an immigrant living in Spain, I am constantly reminded of the importance social and cultural factors have on my daily life, the language I speak, and the difference between the relationships I maintain with people from my own country and those I encounter here on a daily basis...

Ancient/Medieval History Personal Statement Example My decision to study Medieval History at a higher level was never a difficult one. Having always been interested about the relationship between the past and the present, studying History at AS-Level only strengthened my decision...

Law and German Personal Statement Example I have always been fascinated by the structures of societies and how their laws are built. Due to the constant changes of the world, the ongoing conflicts, debates, and controversies, these laws are constantly evolving...

International Business Personal Statement Example 2 The motivation behind my decision to gain a Business Degree lies in my determination to better understand how the real world works. I particularly enjoy the way that business blends in with everyday issues...

English Literature and Personal Statement Example At the war cemeteries of El Alamein in Egypt, I spent an hour or two combing through the British Commonwealth cemetery for Royal Dragoons from my Grandpa’s division and found myself struggling, from the sheer number of headstones, to choose between condemning our capacity for violence and admiring the extent of our sacrifice...

Creative Writing Personal Statement Example 2 To me, fiction is like the magic carpet of Aladdin. It takes me to travel through time and space and explore the slices of human experience. In the wonderful trips, I am guided by the author and accompanied by the characters...

Architecture Personal Statement Example 16 I vividly remember the moment when I knew I wanted to be an architect. I had been taken to Barcelona to see ‘the wavy buildings’, at the time I didn’t know anything about Gaudí or his work so I was relatively unenthusiastic...

History Personal Statement Example 37 My interest in history lies in the simple fact that I have always been fascinated by the past. At eleven I won a full academic bursary to attend my current school. This was a way into a community in which my intellectual curiosity would be valued and where I could further my enthusiasm for history...

Medicine Personal Statement Example 62 When two, I suffered a large third degree burn on my chest. Living in a small town in Romania, I was not able to get appropriate treatment, so I grew up with complexes about the aesthetical appearance of the scar...

Law and History Personal Statement Example 4 Louis de Bernières writes in ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin' that history is fascinating 'because everything [is] connected to everything else in the most elaborate, devious and elegant ways'. Perhaps this explains the importance of history in understanding the modern world; it governs the way in which we view society, dictates our actions and, perhaps most importantly, provides guidance to those who establish law...

Medieval History/History Personal Statement Example My grandmother’s maiden name is Marx. Her uncle, the world-renowned landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, was Karl Marx’s great-nephew. This fact, while seemingly trivial, has worked to strengthen the spark history has ignited within me since I was old enough to read...

Engineering Personal Statement Example 21 The world of engineering is so complex, yet so inspiring. Incredibly, engineers are discovering more ingenious and inventive solutions to complicated problems, whilst continually maximising efficiency...

English Literature & History Personal Statement Example 1 Throughout my education, I have constantly been captivated and inspired by my History and English studies. I have recognised how the two disciplines entwine and coexist to create an invaluable tool with which to explore the past and future...

Computer Science Personal Statement Example 54 Since my first years of school, my life has gravitated around the questions starting with “Why” and “How”. In the 7th grade I was introduced to physics, which answered some of my questions but also generated more...

Psychology Personal Statement Example 67 I first became interested in psychology whilst discussing the underlying causes of criminal behaviour and non-conformity with my father. The nature-nurture debate gave me a huge desire to increase my knowledge and understanding of the human condition...

Illustration or Art Combined Course Personal Statement Example When the opportunity arose to combine art with some of my other subjects I leapt at the chance. English and Art being my favourite combinations. I’d illustrate stories, sketch far-too detailed storyboards than was strictly necessary for my Media project, and translate an extract of Shakespearean script into an attempt at a Frank-Miller-esque comic creation...

Electrical Engineering Personal Statement Example 2 The defining wonder of today’s age is electricity. In just two centuries, we have come from Faraday’s crude but prophetic experiments to devices just a square inch that can calculate in seconds what the most gifted of human minds might take days...

Linguistics Personal Statement Example 3 Have you ever heard the Tuvan throat singing technique? Beautiful and intriguing at the same time. The question that's bound to accompany a throat singing performance is how the human voice could possibly produce such a sound...

Mathematics & Physics Personal Statement Example 2 My enthusiasm for Mathematics and Physics comes from the fact that they are both used to further our understanding of the universe and have applications in all other areas of science. My main area of interest in Physics is particle physics as this tells us how fundamental parts of our universe interact with each other...

Anthropology Personal Statement Example 7 Coming from a mixed religious background, the comparison between cultural practices has touched me deeply, personally and profoundly. I have been able to observe the influence of culture on people's perspectives and world views...

Geology Personal Statement Example 4 Geology acts as a spyglass into the past, enabling us to understand the ancient environment and how its evolution is a key component to our survival. Through the study of Mineralogy and Palaeontology I have understood the importance of unravelling the earth's structure and mineral composition for both environmental and human benefit...

Accounting Personal Statement Example 4 At the heart of a successful business is a passion to achieve. A clear mindset and the ability to collaborate well with people is what makes profit; this is vital in the field of accounting. After looking further into the structure of firms, one thing in common to each is that at it's centre is a good accountant who makes clear and well thought out decisions...

German Personal Statement Example 8 Studying German at an advanced level strikes me as a very natural choice due to my cultural heritage and my strong interest in the subject. I have been brought up in the French-speaking part of Switzerland in a very multicultural family with an Italian father and a German-Iranian mother...

Earth Science/Geology Personal Statement Example 1 Everyone wakes up in the morning hoping to achieve something in life. That ‘something’ is what keeps them going every day. For me, it is my strong desire to contribute to society. I believe the best way to do that is by helping them understand the earth’s mechanism and how to maximise its potential to not just complement our lives but to make it better...

Law and International Relations Personal Statement Example 3 Our entire system is based on law, making it the essential foundation of stability in societies; the emergence of UN, NATO, and EU made the world more cordial. International cooperation is one of the chief elements of the functionality of the modern world; thus a combination of law and foreign affairs is the base of international prosperity...

Politics & Social Policy Personal Statement Example The ever-changing nature and diversity of politics is fascinating. The rapid social and political development in Russia in the early 2000s, still surrounded by the left-overs, if not quite the toppled statues of the previous socialist regime, kindled my interest in politics...

PPE/Economics Personal Statement Example Humanity today stands at the intersection of the most significant questions facing the world today: if democracy leads to political infighting, should it be sacrificed in the interest of economic well-being? Does religious fundamentalism provide a way for countries in the developing world to assert their identity in the face of Western hegemony? Does the entry of Western consumer goods threaten a country’s economic self-sufficiency? The answers of these questions will determine what the nature of our world is in the twenty-first century...

Law Personal Statement Example 90 Law is the cornerstone of our society, the piece of the puzzle that makes the world we live in work. It sparked my interest a few years ago, when I decided it was time to take a closer look at potential university courses...

Personal Statement Help

What is a personal statement.

A personal statement is an essay written by a student applying to either a college or university. A personal statement is written and then uploaded to UCAS and is then attached to any university applications that the student may then make.

If you need more information check out our personal statement advice articles .

How to write a personal statement

There isn't a clearly defined personal statement template for you to use as each person's statement is different.

When it comes to writing a personal statement for universities, your personal statement should touch on your passions, your interest in the course, why you're applying for the course and why you would be an asset to the university you're applying to.

Talk about the clubs and societies that you belong to, any work experience you may have and any awards you might have won.

If you're still looking for information check out our article on how to write a personal statement .

How to start a personal statement

When it comes to starting your personal statement, the best thing to do is to be succinct and to have enough tantalising information to keep the reader informed and eager for more.

Your introduction should touch on your personal qualities and why you are applying for the subject you're applying for. Keeping things short and sweet means that it also allows you to break your personal statement up, which makes it easier for the reader.

We have plenty of advice for students that are wondering about what to include in a personal statement .

The personal statement is a key part of your UCAS application. You have a limited space to tell universities who you are, what you want to do, and why they should accept you. If you give it your best and tackle it step by step it need not be a daunting task.

Before you begin

The personal statement is one of the final sections of your UCAS application. However, you shouldn’t leave it until the last minute. Give yourself plenty of time to write.

  • Your personal statement must be at least 1,000 characters long , including spaces.
  • The maximum length is 4,000 characters or 47 lines, whichever comes first.
  • It’s a good idea to write your statement in a separate document , make all the edits you want, and then copy and paste it into your application.
  • Plan out your structure and key points before you start writing, just like an essay. You can use this page to decide what to include.

Top tips for writing your statement

Watch the video for a summary of the key advice on how to write your personal statement.

Or use the bullet points below as a checklist when you're writing.

Remember the UCAS Deadline is 31 January 2024.

We look forward to receiving your application, good luck!

Video thumbnail: Watch - tips for writing your personal statement

1. Introduce yourself first

You don't need to start your introduction with “My name is...”, but it’s vital to tell whoever’s reading your application who you are. Start by answering these questions:

  • Why are you interested in studying your subject?
  • What is it about university that appeals to you?
  • Where do you hope a degree will take you?

Include any relevant anecdotes and details about yourself that will make your application stand out. Has someone inspired you to study your chosen subject? Have you always dreamed of a particular career?

2. Tell us about your skills and achievements

You should demonstrate the things you’re good at and provide examples to back it up. Include things like:

  • Any awards you’ve received.
  • Hobbies or activities that build skills.
  • Work experience and what that taught you.
  • Volunteering or projects like Duke of Edinburgh, Step Together, or Young Enterprise.

3. Do some final checks

There are a few dos and don’ts to make sure your personal statement is the best it can possibly be.

  • Do proofread everything. A spellchecker might not pick up on every mistake so make sure your writing makes sense.
  • Don’t mention the names of any specific universities if you’re applying to more than one. They all see the same application.
  • Do have someone else read your statement before you submit it. A teacher or family member could have suggestions.
  • Don’t be tempted to copy someone else’s writing. Your statement should be unique to you and similarities will be caught out.
  • Do bring your best self! If you take the time to really think about your statement, plan it out, and write to the best of your ability, then it’s a job well done.

Head back to our main 'How to Apply' page and remember to send your application before 31 January 2024.

How to Write a Great Personal Statement

When you apply for a course at college you will need to write a personal statement. This is a couple of paragraphs of text which provide you an opportunity to tell the college why you should be considered for a place on your chosen course. Read our blog for some tips on writing a great personal statement for your application.

Plan it out

Before you even start putting pen to paper, you should research the course you want to apply for and plan out what you want to say in your personal statement. This could be done in written form, visually as a mind map, or even a voice memo on your phone. A good starting point is to look at the course description, pull out any parts that interest you and match it up with your skills and experience.

At this point you can also think about the structure your personal statement will take. A good structure will give your writing a good flow and make it easy for people to read and understand your key points. You should include clear sections on why you’re applying, your skills and achievements, any hobbies and interests you have, work experience and plans for the future.

Check out this  personal statement worksheet  from UCAS to help you structure your statement.

Make it relevant

Researching your course and matching up your skills and experience to the course description will help make sure your personal statement is as relevant as possible. You can also make your personal statement relevant to the course by writing about why you want to study the subject, what interests you about it and what you can bring to the profession after your time at college. This means you can demonstrate why you are a suitable candidate.

Don’t worry if you’re fresh out of school or looking to retrain in a brand-new area, as you will have a whole host of transferable skills which you can outline in your personal statement. For example, playing on a sports team demonstrates teamwork, raising a family demonstrates skills in time-keeping and so much more.

Think about what makes you great

Your personal statement is your opportunity to really sell yourself so you should think about what makes you stand out from the crowd.

We can all struggle a bit when asked what we’re good at, so why not ask friends and family what they think your best qualities are? You’re sure to be nodding your head in agreement and jotting down things in no time.

Be confident and positive in your writing

Thinking about your best qualities and reminding yourself why you want to progress in this area will help boost your confidence and this will come across in your writing.

It’s important that you come across passionate and confident by writing in an enthusiastic and natural style. Avoiding words like ‘think’ and ‘just’ will make you sound more confident in your personal statement. For example, “I am suitable for this course”, instead of “I think I am suitable” can make a big difference.

Triple check it

You will want to make sure that your personal statement is the best it can be so make sure that you read over it a few times, looking out for anything that doesn’t read well or any spelling mistakes. It’s also a good idea to get a friend or family member to read it over for you as they may pick up on something you’ve missed.

This successful Medicine Personal Statement example will give you some inspiration to help you plan and structure your Personal Statement .

A BBC documentary on Antibiotic Resistance first set me on this path: I was mesmerised by the intricacy behind science and research. The documentary brought home to me that the human body is an amazingly complex machine, and that medical doctors have the opportunity to be engineers of health. Medicine, in particular, satisfies my curiosity for scientific research, where the latest discoveries have huge impacts on well-being and longevity. Furthermore, I am inspired by the prospect of being able to apply my knowledge of the sciences to make a profound impact on the lives of patients.

Eager to learn more about the science behind medicine, I arranged work experience in a university cancer research lab where it was exhilarating to see medical research happening first-hand. I learned about the science behind using zebrafish as model cells to study melanoma progression and the possible development of new therapies to combat the disease. This highlighted to me that medicine is a career that allows for constant academic development and life-long learning.

Aware of the scholarship aspect of medicine, I have also begun to gain an insight into its application in a clinical setting. I have undertaken work experience in various specialities – from paediatric surgery and GP clinics to radiology – all of which have highlighted to me the essential skills required of today’s doctors. I learnt the importance of good interpersonal skills during a particular GP consultation: the patient came in evidently distressed and emotional, unable to communicate across her concerns to the doctor. I was able to appreciate how the doctor stayed empathetic and composed, making sure the patient was comfortable throughout the consultation. It also exemplified to me the importance of doctors being able to empathise with both a patient’s physical pain and psychological struggles.

The patient interactions I witnessed from work experience led me to seek opportunities to develop my own interpersonal skills. At school, my teamwork and leadership skills have been developed through my participation in a dance leadership course and running a peer-reading program and break time social club. Through interacting with the younger pupils, with various physical and mental barriers to learning, I have been able to refine and progress my own communication skills, discovering the importance of tone, pace and positive body language when engaging with others. Outside of school, being a dedicated volunteer at my local elderly care home for over two years has given me the opportunity to form personal connections with the residents there, developing the qualities of patience and compassion within myself.

The Ultimate UCAS Support

Make Your Application Amazing

Volunteering at a children’s hospital this past year has meant I have been able to further test these two qualities. Additionally, I remain committed to my wider community and I am currently a Youth Culture Ambassador, helping to promote Chinese culture. I have worked on various shows – helping to host in both Mandarin and English – and volunteered as a translator and guide in the disability conference ‘Rehabilitation International’. This led me to become a translator for a health magazine in the US called ‘Ability’ which has given me the chance to learn about the stigma connected to disability and mental health issues in China. Through further reading and my own work placements, I am constantly developing an awareness of the current dilemmas facing the NHS and clinicians across the world.

Lastly, my life-long dedication to pursuing ballet to Grade Eight and personal artistic pursuits demonstrates that I have an ability to maintain a good work-life balance, essential for a life-long medical career. It is my firm belief that my journey so far successfully shows I possess the correct conviction and capacity to be able to make a lasting contribution to my chosen speciality one day and prosper as part of tomorrow’s doctors.

Welcome to our collection of Medicine Personal Statement Examples! We’ve searched far and wide to find personal statements from successful applicants all around the UK and asked them to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their work for your own inspiration. Today’s subject is from Elizabeth, who studies Medicine at the University of Cambridge.

Elizabeth applied to study medicine in 2019 at some of top Universities in the UK, including Edinburgh  and UCL and subsequently received offers from all four.

Let’s read the personal statement that got her a place at the University of Cambridge , or skip straight to her feedback to learn what made her personal statement a success!

Please be aware that these examples are meant purely for the sake of inspiration, and should absolutely NOT be used as a model around which to base your own personal statement. UCAS have a rather strict system that detects plagiarism .

Cambridge Medicine Personal Statement Example

Whole personal statement.

Months of work experience in Nigeria has led me to appreciate the free evidence based healthcare provided by the NHS. I observed the preferred use of traditional medicine and distrust of modern treatments in rural areas, leading to poorer health and even deformities. Contrasting this with the increase in measles in the UK, I can see the importance of public trust alongside properly gained results to refine healthcare provision, requiring doctors to communicate ideas well. The potential impact of modern healthcare in these areas showed me how crucial medicine is in the betterment of lives. Pursuing medicine allows me to apply my passion for science and communication in social contexts in order to help those in need.

To gain insight into research, I went to a UCL virology lab. Speaking to a PhD student investigating protease inhibitor resistance in Nigerian HIV patients, I realised how drug access affects the spread of disease in developing countries and how different strategies may be needed to control disease. I now know that there are cultural practices and biological factors believed to increase HIV vulnerability and transmission, such as FGMs and mutations, which result in the loss of proteins such as DARC. The effect of culture on health is not only limited to developing countries with controversy over NHS PrEP in the UK. However we can effectively prevent and treat infectious diseases like HIV, yet our culture of binge drinking, smoking and overeating results in health complications that are great public health burdens. As our population ages, culture will change, medicine will continue to evolve and I am excited to be a part of this progressive field.

Work experience showed me that doctors never stop learning. Continuous reflection upon successes and failures is essential for progression. During a week at Homerton Hospital ICU, I sat in on an M&M meeting, where I heard from a consultant haematologist reflecting upon the death of a sickle cell patient due to fat emboli, resulting in multiple organ failure. Hearing the consultant’s desire to improve the treatment, as he reflected on errors, showed me how medicine is also a trained art. I noticed his resilience as, despite the death, he continued to treat patients. In keeping my own journal, where I reflect upon my own successes and failures during my work experience, scientific presentations and volunteering, I have become more self-aware, a quality I saw in the consultant. Seeing the close interaction between the team of healthcare professionals in the ICU showed me the importance of teamwork and leadership. Effective healthcare cannot be the sole responsibility of one person.

Four months of volunteering to help a year 6 pupil with maths showed me how things needed to be explained in several ways, requiring mental flexibility. This is like the anaesthetist I shadowed in theatre; having to explain the procedure in multiple ways to ensure the patient understood so could fully consent.

Whilst reading papers in the BMJ and The Beautiful Cure, I have found a love for scientific writing. I am a part of the Young Scientist Journal’s outreach team as an ambassador for medicine. This has allowed me to combine my love for writing with teamwork by being able to be part of the publishing and work in a multidisciplinary team comparable to an ICU, inspiring future medics and scientists. Alongside Journal volunteering, I am completing my gold DofE, which has improved my dedication and time management skills, alongside developing new skills such as orienteering requiring patience. Having also had many roles of great responsibility and leadership opportunities, such as being head girl of my sixth form, I have a realistic image of what it is like to pursue medicine. I am committed to following a lifelong career in the medical field, in order to better the lives of others.

Cambridge Medicine Personal Statement Example Analysis

Now, let’s go section by section and see what Elizabeth has to say about what she wrote:

INTRODUCTION

Introduction

This opening isn’t a traditional PS introduction that begins with general statements about my interest in medicine. However, it introduces the person reading straight away to the main thing that drew me to medicine. I was able to show how one experience, work experience in Nigeria, had led me to carry out more research into public health and led me to want to study medicine. It portrays me as being a curious student who is also reflective on what I learn, without directly saying so to the reader. I think the comparing and contrasting of the Nigerian healthcare system with the NHS was very effective in portraying me as a student who viewed medicine critically and demonstrates both my interest and research skills.

As for a few issues I have with this paragraph, the ending of the paragraph is a bit vague. It is clear that I was running out of characters and so I sacrificed some clarity. I also did not address why I appreciated the NHS and I just go on to talk about my experience in Nigeria. Lastly, some of the statements I made were very vague, such as “the potential impact of modern healthcare on these areas”. What areas am I talking about?

However, admissions teams know that you have a very limited amount of space, so they will be more likely to forgive unexplored statements if you’ve already provided plenty of meaningful information about you motivations and interests.

Paragraph 1

Here I talk about my lab-based work experience and was able to address the importance of scientific research with clinical practice. It also followed on well from my introduction as it showed that I decided to further explore public health, which is evidenced by the amount of actual depth displayed in my writing. Often people think they need to do as many different things as possible to demonstrate their worth, but I think by me keeping on this theme I showed my passion for medicine much more effectively. It’s about the balance of being the Jack-of-All-Trades or mastering one or two!

I made a grammatical error which should have been easy to spot if I had properly proof read it before submitting, “ However we can effectively prevent and treat infectious diseases like HIV, yet our culture of binge drinking, smoking and overeating results in health complications that are great public health burdens .” Within this same sentence I made quite a bold, but still very true, claim that I was very worried about having to defend in interviews. Although never questioned on, I do feel that you should avoid putting anything in your personal statement that you would be too scared to defend at interview .

Paragraph 2

Here, I was able to effectively write about the hospital-based work experience I had undertaken and reflect on what I had learned. Not only what I had learned at the time but what I had taken from this experience and how I went on to then apply it in my journey as a medical student. Reflection is the most important thing you can do when discussing work experience. Applicants don’t go to work-experience just to learn new skills and essentially train for the job; they go to experience the setting and learn from the people who have spent years doing that job. Your personal statement isn’t for just explaining how you helped a patient in some way, it’s about what you learnt from that experience and how it has shaped the person you are today.

Generally I am pretty happy with this paragraph, although I think my main criticism is there is a grammatical error (“success and failure is” instead of saying are). Again, proof reading is important and there’s no time limit for it, so do it properly! Also, although I mentioned it elsewhere there was a missed opportunity to use the medical buzzword “multidisciplinary”. You don’t need to completely pack your work with these (especially if you’ve already displayed a lot of actual subject knowledge), but it’s good to add them in where appropriate.

Paragraph 3

Four months of volunteering to help a year 6 pupil with maths showed me how things needed to be explained in several ways, requiring mental flexibility. This is like the anaesthetist I shadowed in theatre; having to explain the procedure in multiple ways to ensure the patient understood so could fully consent .

This is the shortest paragraph in the statement, but it didn’t need to be long. I was able to relate voluntary experience as a tutor, which isn’t directly medical related, back to how this experience has made me a better potential medical student. Stating how long i did it for shows that I am committed and reliable. Plus it never hurts to mention other things you did outside of school and science/health based work experience.

However, if one paragraph had to be removed from the personal statement it would be this one as it doesn’t explicitly add anything to my personal statement. It demonstrates some positive character traits, but those could be easily deciphered from other parts of the statement. If i had more characters I would have elaborated further on how I felt tutoring was similar to the anaesthetist I shadowed but it is a bit vague. This paragraph does fulfil its job of showing extracurricular activities however, no matter how briefly. This will almost always be a plus for the admissions team.

This is probably my biggest structural gripe with my personal statement, as this is essentially my extracurricular/super-curricular paragraph more than my conclusion. That’s not to say the content is bad though. It shows that I would be able to add to the university community as a whole and that I did things outside of my academics. I was still able to relate it back to medicine which I know Cambridge particularly love when you are able to see your degree in everyday things. The last sentence pretty much sums up my intentions with both this personal statement and my application as a whole, which is always important to do.

However, this does not function as a traditional conclusion. Looking back on this, the conclusion itself definitely deserved more room to breath, while the extra-curricular information could have been combined with the previous paragraph. It could also have been made a lot more concise as this is probably the least important paragraph for Cambridge particularly, as they care a lot more about academics. Reducing this would have freed up characters which i could have used for my other more vague paragraphs and to expand my conclusion by a sentence or two.

Final Thoughts

I think that this was very personal to me and effectively takes anyone reading through my journey of deciding to pursue medicine. I managed to have a wide range of experiences to write about and so is very easy and interesting to read. I went a lot deeper into actual subject discussion than you would traditionally do in a personal statement, but I felt that it would be good to show instead of tell when it came to my interests and abilities.

My biggest piece of advice would be simply to be yourself. It sounds cliched but an admissions team is going to easily see through a disingenuous personal statement that’s ticking off all the boxes and not providing depth to the experiences and emotions being described.

My biggest mistake with this personal statement was definitely my proof-reading. I made a few grammatical errors which should have been easily spotted had I taken the time to read through it properly a few times. When proof-reading, don’t do it all in one go; take a look at it once each day for a while or even get someone else to read through it if you’re comfortable with that. As long as you haven’t left it all to the last minute, you’ll have plenty of time to take a step back and look at it with fresh eyes.

I also clearly had a lot to write about in this statement, which is definitely a good thing. However, at times it seems a bit vague and generic as I sacrificed quantity over quality. This isn’t necessarily a problem as there would be a lot of overlap if I thoroughly discussed everything, but it’s important to flesh out any important or unique areas to provide more information about yourself.

Lastly, I wish I had tackled the conclusion better. What I wrote was fine for what it is, but admissions teams do like to have a summary of yourself that’s a bit more in-depth that what I provided. It ties everything together and reaffirms why you would be perfect for their medical school.

So there you have it! This personal statement helped Elizabeth get 4/4 offers in her application, which is the best thing any applicant could hope for.

Everyone has different experiences and abilities, so you may not be able to relate to everything that was said in this personal statement. However, the information and advice provided by Elizabeth is universal and will help any applicant write a better personal statement!

Edinburgh Medicine Personal Statement Example

The Medicine Personal Statement Portal

As a child with severe allergies, I was frequently in and out of Hereford Hospital for blood tests. The atmosphere that frightened the other children, the frenetic bustle of the doctors, served only to inspire a curiosity in me about what they did, what went on in the rest of that building. I returned there recently, countless years later, on work experience – and discovered that my curiosity had intensified over the years into a passion.

Having gained an academic scholarship to secondary school, I take a keen interest in my academic studies and have been awarded multiple school prizes. My main focus has always been the sciences – however, I firmly believe that a good doctor ought to be a capable communicator, rather than just being a scientist. As such I continue to study and enjoy French. Looking at medicine from viewpoints outside of the sciences – learning, for example, of Hippocrates in Greek – has enabled me to see just how far medicine has come, and just how much more useful the modern day doctor is, in an age where people are living longer every year.

I have completed medical work placements at Hereford Hospital and in General Practice and seen everything from a hip replacement to an Ex-Paratrooper worrying about having slightly imperfect skin – a lesson that for the patient, seemingly minor problems can be serious. I’ve had experience of Radiology, Orthopaedics, Bronchology, and A&E, and found myself most drawn to Orthopaedics for its need for teamwork, and the speed, efficiency and efficacy with which patients could be treated. Equally, going on ward rounds with junior doctors laid bare the difficulties encountered in medicine – aged patients with dementia who were bewildered and angry, young patients who were unwilling to accept that they had to be in hospital – and showed me just how strenuous life can be starting out in medicine. Throughout my work experience, the sense of cohesion both among and between the hospital teams astounded me. The close working relationships I expected between Consultants and their Registrars continued down to the Junior Doctors in their team, and across to nurses and indeed administrative staff.

Attending a communication skills workshop based around delivering bad news with medical students at Cardiff University, I learnt just how important the ability to communicate sympathy to patients or their relatives is, but also that a doctor must be careful to empathise rather than sympathise in order to provide the best care for a patient. This lesson that was reiterated by doctors I spoke to on work experience, who stressed the importance of empathy when talking to patients in order that they felt their concerns were understood.

As a volunteer I spent a week at a Vitalise centre last summer, helping disabled guests to have an enjoyable holiday. Working sixteen hour days, often up until after midnight helping guests get to bed was incredibly hard work, but more than worth it for the knowledge that I was truly helping people, for the respect I acquired for the guests, and indeed for the experience and confidence I myself gained. I realise that medicine is not always about curing – rather, it is often about improving quality of life for people with no hope of a cure. I have also volunteered at my local British Heart Foundation shop, seeing at first hand the importance of charity to research, and enjoying being part of a team of dedicated volunteers, as well as interacting with customers.

I am acutely aware of how challenging and arduous a medical course can be and believe my interests prove my determination and staying power. My principal sport is cross country, for which I have represented my school and region in both individual and team events. I am currently in the process of completing my D.O.E. Gold award. As a long-term member of the CCF, in which I hold the rank of Sergeant, I have proven my ability to lead others in challenging situations. I am a Prefect at school, where I have learnt how and when to exercise authority, but also to listen to and empathise with others. I am excited to bring all that I have learnt to the challenge that is Medicine.

Philosophy Personal Statement

“And if you find her poor, Ithaka has not fooled you. / Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, / You will have understood by then, what these Ithakas mean.”

Cavafy was right, indeed. Like any other reflective person, I am essentially a philosophical entity. While most people, perhaps those outside academic philosophy, would consider it a prime example, maybe along with Mathematics, of an established body of a priori truths, of some kind of Ithaka (thus excluding themselves from the possibility of realizing their philosophical essence), I beg to differ. For years, though, unwise as I was according to Cavafy, I was looking for Ithakas like most men, misled by this major misconception. For years, I have been reading Plato and Aristotle, Descartes and Nietzsche always, hastily and impatiently, heading towards truth; towards my rich Ithaka, and always falling on reefs and mythical objections raised by one philosopher against the truths of the other. Always, en route.

When, “wise as I had become” on the road, like old Ulysses, I realized that philosophy is much more than just a truth per se. Instead, philosophy is the pursuit of truth, irrespective of whether that truth is ever achieved; in fact, if and when something ever counts as truth, it does not belong to the realm of philosophy any more. Not until I read Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, had I realized that the aim of philosophy is to designate what can be said and what not, what is non-sense or what might be senseless. This very sub specie aeternitatis realization of philosophy as an activity, a method of approaching truth and reflecting on reality rather than as an established body of justified true belief, was crucial in my selection of philosophy as the subject of my academic study. Since this realization, my chief preoccupation has been to learn as much as possible from the journey to Ithaka, to hone this ability to philosophize effectively, to exercise and engage philosophy as much as possible, whenever and wherever possible.

A culmination of this constant struggle to sharpen my philosophical essence happened this summer in the Epic Questions Summer Institute of U of Va, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. In this intensive, three-week seminar for high-school teachers, I was the official note-taker and the only high-school student to be accepted among the scholars as an intern of Dr. Mitchell S. Green. Courses in Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, Formal Logic, Philosophy of Language, Ethics, Political Philosophy and Bioethics unprecedentedly furthered this philosophical activity and I made the acquaintance of contemporary philosophical thought, reading, such as T. Nagel, R. Chisholm, D. Papineau, B. Williams, along with classical readings.

Hence, to my readings of Plato’s Five Dialogues, Descartes’s Meditations on First Philosophy and Nietzsche’s Übermensch, were added those of the British Empiricists, esp. some of Hume’s Enquiries, Kant, B. Rusell’s The Problems of Philosophy and Mill’s Utilitarianism.

I must admit that I have been uncritically assuming a certain account of human nature (as inherently philosophical), which many may find controversial. And this, itself, thus, turns into a philosophical question. And so on and so forth.

This is exactly the philosophical beauty I live for.

Good Points Of The Personal Statement

The statement is well written, and the student clearly demonstrates their passion for philosophy, as well as their motivation for pursuing further study of it, and something of a personal journey through which their philosophical thinking has developed. The discussion of the nature of philosophical thought ties nicely into their own motivation to study philosophy. The statement shows their broad philosophical education, as well as indicating a strong self-motivating passion for learning (in a much more subtle manner than simply stating that they are self-motivated), as much of this education is in the form of private study. Acceptance to the prestigious seminar is an impressive achievement, and the student is right to stress this, and the ‘unprecedented’ effect it had on their philosophical activity.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

The statement is vague in what it terms ‘philosophy’; though the student clearly has an interest in some vague notion of ‘human nature’, they don’t narrow down exactly what they wish to study at university (philosophy being such a broad subject that quite a bit of specialisation is necessary). The time spent listing impressive works that they had read would have been better invested in mentioning just one (or even just one subject that they had read around) that had particularly affected them and expanding on it. Similarly, they could have expanded further on the experience of the seminar (how it affected their philosophical thinking, new ideas encountered while there, etc.), rather than listing the respected philosophers they had met. The grammar is, at points, questionable, indicating the statement required closer proofreading prior to being submitted.

UniAdmissions Overall Score:

This statement is very strong; it conveys a rare passion for the subject and, more importantly, a passion that has been actively pursued in the student’s own time. It could, however, benefit from a little more specificity regarding their thoughts on specific readings, and from reading less like a list of books and philosophers. Overall, the statement reads like an intriguing personal philosophical work.

This Personal Statement for Philosophy is a great example of demonstrating passion which is vital to Admissions Tutors.
