Overall Role/Responsibility

Provide strategic vision for Northwestern’s research enterprise. Direct and guide the University’s research mission, contributing to the national research agenda and policies. Set and confirm commitment to policies and regulations and take appropriate actions to ensure the University’s commitment to compliance. The VPR is the Institutional Official for research.

Administration

  • Oversee Office for Research (OR) and University research operations
  • Delegate regulatory responsibility to appropriate University units
  • Foster new research initiatives
  • Oversee University research centers, institutes and shared/core facilities
  • Oversee partnerships with industry, government, and external partner institutions, nationally and internationally
  • Act as the University representative at national labs, specifically Argonne and Fermilab
  • Act as the University representative on national committees
  • Official institution nominator for limited submission candidates
  • Communicate state of the research enterprise

Proposals and Awards

Ensure maintenance of policies and procedures and fiscal responsibilities of pre- and post- award activities.

Research Conduct

Human research participants.

  • Foster and enable a compliant University human research participants protection program
  • Coordinate with stakeholders from University affiliates to ensure adequate resources and appropriate oversight
  • Delegate responsibilities to the Associate Vice President for Research that serves as the Human Research Protection Program's Institutional Official as outlined in the Human Research Protection Program Plan (HRP-101)
  • Receive and assess reports of non-compliance
  • Place limitations or conditions on an investigator's or research staff's privilege to conduct human research
  • Ensure that University officials cannot approve human research not approved by one of the Institution's IRBs
  • Disallow research approved by the Institution's IRB or an external IRB
  • Ensure the education and training of personnel in support of an ethical human research participants program

Animal Subjects

  • Promote a humane and ethical animal welfare program in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies
  • Ensure compliance with Northwestern’s Assurance
  • Appoint Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) members
  • Communicate non-compliance to appropriate regulatory agencies
  • Ensure the education and training of personnel in support of humane animal care and use
  • Ensure the program has the resources it needs to run effectively
  • Support compliance with all federal, state and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, as well as University and sponsoring agency
  • Ensure the education and training of personnel in safe research practices
  • Foster and promote a culture of research integrity at the University
  • Communicate the need for, and importance of, training and education to the research community
  • Ensure secure and ethical data use, data confidentiality, and compliant data management, sharing, ownership, and retention practices
  • Receive reports from research misconduct committees and communicate with the Provost as defined in the policy

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Experience would be obtained through a combination of prior education level classes, and current level school classes, projects, research, and relevant previous job and/or internship experience. Postdoctoral Research Associate on Neutrino Software & Computing and Physics

The Nuclear and Particle Physics Software (NPPS) Group in the Physics Department at BNL participates in BNL’s nuclear and particle physics experiments and programs such as DUNE, the ATLAS experiment at CERN, the Belle II experiment at KEK, the sPHENIX experiment at BNL, and many others. Working with the experimental groups, scientists and software developers in NPPS group design, develop, maintain and apply scientific software for the experimental programs in the Department.

You will play a central role in advancing workflows and algorithms to be used by DUNE in the analysis of data from both prototypes and future detector modules. The work will focus on designing the software, algorithms, and workflows that will enable LAr TPC scientists to perform efficient and world-class measurements utilizing a variety of computing platforms and architectures. The successful candidate will bring their physics expertise and learn from a team of world-leading HEP-software experts and extreme-scale computing experts from BNL to advance modern software development. The position has potential to extend effort and expertise to other experiments as well over time.

The successful candidate will be experienced in nuclear and/or high energy physics software development. We are seeking a physicist with strong software skills and an interest in a scientific software career path, individuals prepared to focus on software and computing while also making world-class physics measurements with LAr TPC detectors. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Scientific software development for nuclear and high energy physics experiments that are part of the NPPS program
  • Play a central role in developing and using algorithms to provide prompt processing of raw data for DUNE
  • Leverage NPPS software and experience to develop infrastructure that will allow complex workflows across heterogenous architectures
  • Support the integration of the output of these algorithms into the database infrastructure for DUNE.
  • Lead analysis of LAr TPC data and publication of physics measurements based upon that data.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in experimental particle or nuclear physics
  • Experience in particle or nuclear physics software development and computing
  • Demonstrated strong programming skills in C++
  • Knowledge of distributed computing models and workflows to utilize such resources
  • Experience in collaborating with a distributed team of scientists and software developers

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in developing reconstruction algorithms and production frameworks
  • Experience with database development and integration into HEP software
  • Demonstrated strong programming skills in Python
  • Experience with digital signal processing and analysis
  • Experience in applying machine learning to scientific problems
  • Experience in heterogeneous computing (e.g. GPUs)

DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will support the clinical research and quality improvement efforts of the study team. Support the clinical research operation; communicate with research participants, schedule visits, assist in the handling and processing of biological samples; shipping of samples for general lab assays and data entry. May be involved in clinical and quality improvement projects that also involve recruitment, and ensuring performance of protocols according to schedule, including data entry and reporting on data results back to participants. Incumbent will assist in the day-to-day operation of the research team. Responsible for assisting with and ensuring the quality of data collected, maintaining databases, ensuring adequate lab supplies for the function of the lab. Under supervision maintain a sample flowchart of active clinical studies and or quality improvement projects and how participants flow through these project protocols as well as monitoring study/project samples/data collections. Will assist clinical team with participant home study visits to collect questionnaire data and clinical specimens. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory or field experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience in processing and shipping laboratory specimens-ambient and frozen. Demonstrated experience with guidelines of biohazardous handling. Knowledge and strict utilization of universal precautions when handling laboratory specimens.

Experience managing biological samples, storage, and inventory.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Proven effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Ability to prioritize workload and work independently.

Ability to maintain and protect confidentiality of participant information.

Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to propose alternative strategies to resolve issues.

Must be IATA-certified to process and ship human specimens.

Certified in hazardous materials handling.

  • Graduation from college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and Clinical Research experience.
