  • Consumer shift to digital channels will remain after the pandemic -PwC report.
  • Customer loyalty has plummeted, with buyers switching brands at unprecedented rates.
  • The use of smartphones for online shopping has more than doubled since 2018.

Billions of people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic are driving a “historic and dramatic shift in consumer behaviour” – according to the latest research from PwC.

The consulting and accounting firm's June 2021 Global Consumer Insights Pulse Survey reports a strong shift to online shopping as people were first confined by lockdowns, and then many continued to work from home. Other trends in this shift towards digital consumption include online shoppers being keen to find the best price, choosing more healthy options and being more eco-friendly by shopping locally where possible.

Another significant finding from the report is that consumers do not think they’ll go back to their old ways of shopping once the pandemic is over.

A consumer pivot to digital and devices

More than 8,600 people across 22 territories took part in PwC’s survey. They were asked how often, in the past 12 months, they had bought clothes, books and electronics using a range of shopping channels.

Have you read?

Covid-19 pandemic accelerated shift to e-commerce by 5 years, new report says, these charts show how covid-19 has changed consumer spending around the world.

The chart below illustrates their answers, and shows a shift to digital and a growing trend for shopping using connected devices such as smartphones, tablets and smart voice assistants such as Amazon Echo, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings.

a chart showing the growing trend for shopping using connected devices such as smartphones, tablets and smart voice assistants such as Amazon Echo, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings

More than 50% of the global consumers responding to the June 2021 survey said they had used digital devices more frequently than they had six months earlier, when they had taken part in a prior PwC survey. The report also finds the use of smartphones for shopping has more than doubled since 2018.

COVID-19 has exposed digital inequities globally and exacerbated the digital divide. Most of the world lives in areas covered by a mobile broadband network, yet more than one-third (2.9 billion people) are still offline. Cost, not coverage, is the barrier to connectivity.

At The Davos Agenda 2021 , the World Economic Forum launched the EDISON Alliance , the first cross-sector alliance to accelerate digital inclusion and connect critical sectors of the economy.

Through the 1 Billion Lives Challenge , the EDISON Alliance aims to improve 1 billion lives globally through affordable and accessible digital solutions across healthcare, financial services and education by 2025.

Medicines and groceries on demand

A survey of US consumers by McKinsey & Company gives a more detailed breakdown of the shift to digital shopping channels and the kinds of purchases consumers are making.

The survey found a 15-30% overall growth in consumers who made purchases online across a broad range of product categories. Many of the categories see a double-digit percentage growth in online shopping intent, led by over-the-counter medicines, groceries, household supplies and personal care products.

And McKinsey noted that “consumer intent to shop online [post-pandemic] continues to increase, especially in essentials and home-entertainment categories”.

A decline in brand loyalty

With consumers shopping from their sofas and home offices, another trend flagged up by McKinsey is a marked decline in brand loyalty.

a chart showing how brand loyalty has cahnged

In total, 75% of US consumers have tried a new shopping behaviour and over a third of them (36%) have tried a new product brand. In part, this trend has been driven by popular items being out of stock as supply chains became strained at the height of the pandemic. However, 73% of consumers who had tried a different brand said they would continue to seek out new brands in the future.

What is the World Economic Forum doing to manage emerging risks from COVID-19?

The first global pandemic in more than 100 years, COVID-19 has spread throughout the world at an unprecedented speed. At the time of writing, 4.5 million cases have been confirmed and more than 300,000 people have died due to the virus.

As countries seek to recover, some of the more long-term economic, business, environmental, societal and technological challenges and opportunities are just beginning to become visible.

To help all stakeholders – communities, governments, businesses and individuals understand the emerging risks and follow-on effects generated by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Marsh and McLennan and Zurich Insurance Group, has launched its COVID-19 Risks Outlook: A Preliminary Mapping and its Implications - a companion for decision-makers, building on the Forum’s annual Global Risks Report.

Companies are invited to join the Forum’s work to help manage the identified emerging risks of COVID-19 across industries to shape a better future. Read the full COVID-19 Risks Outlook: A Preliminary Mapping and its Implications report here , and our impact story with further information.

Healthy, hygienic and sustainable

The trend towards online shopping has also seen consumers focus on staying healthy during long periods in lockdown. McKinsey notes a desire to reduce touchpoints to ensure greater hygiene with the shopping experience.

One enterprise in the US has tapped into these trends to provide a service for shopping online at a range of farm shops local to the buyer. To qualify for the FarmMatch scheme, farmers must grow their food using sustainable methods.

As the world navigates its way out of the pandemic, the way we all act as consumers has been changed fundamentally by COVID-19. The research points to this change becoming permanent, leaving retailers and manufacturers with the challenge of attracting and retaining consumers in an 'omnichannel' world, where customer loyalty is hard-won.

Cause and Effect of Online Shopping | Best Homework Writers

Online retailing is a type of e-commerce that facilitates or gives a platform for buyers to purchase services and goods online. Recently, online shopping has gained fame, and more people are turning to online shopping. There are particular reasons which lead people to shop; however, online shopping norm has an impact not only on the businesses but also the economy.

The need for a wider selection of goods and to have a comparison of goods. This is one of the major reasons why most buyers prefer to purchase goods from an online store. A majority of buyers rarely know what they are looking for when going shopping. Therefore, turning to online shopping, they can have access to various products that are in stock (Lim et al. 403). For instance, by using Amazon only, a buyer can access items from different categories, e.g., books, electronics, furniture, detergents, among others. The need to access a variety of goods goes hand in hand with the need to have a better comparison of commodities. Buyers do not have time to move from one physical location to another to compare commodities. They choose to from online stores since they can compare the quality, quantity, and price of products. Some products are counterfeit and may have different pricing on different platforms. Going through the review section of the item helps one understand the quality and durability of the product. Likewise, one can determine which platform has the best rates for a particular product. The customer requires a wider range of products to choose from.

Other causes of online shopping are convenience and the need to save on time. Shoppers enjoy the freedom of purchasing commodities conveniently from home (Bucko et al.). All they need is to have access to the internet, choose the products you wish to buy, make an order, and they will be delivered at your doorstep. Buyers do not have to travel to the physical location of the retailer to buy what they need. Also, they do not struggle to get a product of their choice; it is easier to identify which store is selling a particular product. It’s different from offline stores where one must move from one retailer to the other in the search for the desired products. Most people usually look for easier ways to shop without wasting much of their time. Through online shopping, buyers will not waste their time by visiting supermarkets and other retailers to buy goods. Also, they save on time that is wasted by shoppers making long queues in supermarkets. Online shopping saves buyers the hustle of looking for a car park and the time wasted switching products that are not necessary from the shopping trolley. Technological inventions help businesses improve their business and serve clients better, and therefore, buyers are looking for a retailer that is convenient.

Online shopping has affected offline retail shops in several ways. One, they have decreased the loyalty of customers towards a certain brand. Shoppers don’t keep on buying items from one store since they have a variety to choose the best, depending on what fits them best. Using online reviews, buyers are able to make a clear decision of what they want to buy before visiting the stores, unlike when people used to depend on shop attendants for advice. Organizations have been forced to create websites where they update relevant information regularly. They inform customers of new products, discounts and also customers are allowed to make a review of particular products. This has affected engagement between the company and its customers. The company is able to create a direct connection with its clients.

Online shopping may be convenient, but what most people do not realize is that it affects our health. The habit of online buying could be making our body weaker day by day without people’s knowledge. It is convenient since it does not involve carrying shopping bags, among other items, from shop to home, but this ruins the body muscles. Body muscles wear out more so as people grow older; however, this may be reduced through body exercise. Therefore, online shopping accelerates wearing out of body muscles. People are at the risk of becoming obese or adding weight extraordinarily since all they do is just sitting at home without body exercises. Offline shopping facilitates some form of body exercise by walking to shops and back home. People are bound to lose weight through body exercise but at the same time add weight if they spend more time sited.

People who are addicted to online shopping have a high probability of developing agitation, depression, isolation, and boredom. People who spend their time shopping online may develop depression due to a lack of enough money to purchase needed products. Online buyers behave like they are in isolation since they spend most of their time on phones and laptops searching for what to buy (Hsu and Pham). Most of their time is spent online, and they rarely interact with other people. They have a poor social life compared to that of other people. Agitation is a type of mood disorder that develops from stress (Lee et al., 2011). In this case, agitation can be caused by a lack of money when order is not delivered on time, among others. Online buyer’s minds are occupied by activities of online shopping and rarely involve themselves with other activities.

Too much of anything is poisonous, and so is online shopping. Most online buyers spend a larger percentage of their time, which results in addiction (Bhargava and Kiran). It develops some odd or weird behaviors to the affected persons to the extent that they may not realize it. It forms some kind of irresistible shopping habit that is beyond limits or excessive purchase of products. Such habits can be termed as compulsive buying and might result in the abuse of resources or regrets. Compulsive buying is a disorder that develops a kind of cycle similar to that of drug addiction. At this time, shopping becomes a routine or rather habit; it is done in order to alter our mood. Such people are forced to shop more and more despite having enough shopping in order to achieve some kind of satisfaction.

In conclusion, there are particular reasons which lead people to shop; however, online shopping norm has an impact not only on the businesses but also the economy. People opt for online shopping due to several reasons. One is the need to have a wider selection and comparison of goods. Convenience and the need to save time has also caused people to turn to online shopping. The norm of online buying has not only reduced the loyalty of customers to particular brands but also made it harder for companies to compete with each other.  In addition to the lack of privacy and increased fraud cases, online shopping has led to a reduced collection of sales taxes by the local state.

1. online shopping and purchasing preferences.

America has long been a nation of shoppers, and that is as true online as it is in the physical world. The earliest modern e-commerce transactions date to just 1994, but by 2015 Americans were spending nearly $350 billion annually online – or roughly 10% of all retail purchases, excluding automobiles and fuel. Pew Research Center surveys of digital commerce tell a similar tale. When the Center first asked about online shopping in a survey conducted in June 2000, just 22% of Americans indicated that they had ever made a purchase online. But in the intervening years that figure has increased nearly fourfold: Today, 79% of Americans say they make purchases online.

why buy goods online essay

A substantial majority of Americans are online shoppers, but for most this behavior is a relatively infrequent occurrence. Some 15% of Americans say that they make purchases online on a weekly basis (4% do so several times a week, while 10% do so about once a week) and 28% shop online a few times a month. On the other hand, nearly six-in-ten Americans say they buy online less often than a few times a month (37%) or they never make any online purchases (20%).

Two-thirds of online shoppers generally prefer buying from physical stores, although pricing differences are ultimately what drives most Americans’ purchasing decisions

why buy goods online essay

As might be expected, the most dedicated online shoppers tend to express a relatively pronounced preference for shopping online as opposed to shopping in physical stores. Among Americans who make online purchases on a weekly basis, 62% indicate that they generally prefer to buy online, while 37% generally prefer to buy from physical stores. But among those who buy online on a monthly basis, 42% prefer online shopping while 58% prefer buying from physical locations. And among those who make online purchases even less frequently, just 18% prefer buying online – with 82% indicating that they prefer to shop in physical stores.

But even as many online shoppers express preferences for physical stores in the abstract, their ultimate decision of where to buy something often comes down to price. When asked a second question about their relative preferences for online and in-person shopping that incorporates pricing, fully 65% of online shoppers indicate that if they needed to make a purchase they would probably compare the price they could get online with the price they could get from physical stores and choose whichever one offered them the best deal. Another 21% of online shoppers say they would likely buy from stores without looking at prices online, while 14% indicate they would buy online without looking at prices in physical stores.

Users who frequently shop online are substantially more likely to say that they would typically choose to make purchases by simply buying online without visiting stores: 28% of weekly online shoppers say that they would likely do this if they needed to buy something, compared with 17% of monthly online shoppers and just 6% of those who buy online less often. But even among these frequent online shoppers, 62% say that they would typically compare the price they could get online and the price they could get in physical stores and choose whichever one is cheapest.

When buying something for the first time, Americans especially value the ability to compare prices and ask questions

why buy goods online essay

Other factors that Americans consider important include the ability to buy from stores or sellers they are familiar with (34% of Americans describe this as extremely important); the ability to read ratings or reviews that other people have posted online (32%); the ability to look at or try out the product in person (30%); and the ability to get advice or recommendations from people they know (23%). The ability to buy online – without having to make a trip to the store – ranks as the least important factor: just 42% of Americans say that this is at least somewhat important to them when buying something for the first time, and only 10% describe it as extremely important.

Regardless of their demographic characteristics, when buying something for the first time most Americans assign greater importance to being able to look at or try the product in person than they do to being able to buy online without making a trip to the store. However, frequent online shoppers are one of the few groups who place more importance on being able to buy online. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of weekly online shoppers say that being able to buy online without having to make a trip to the store is important to them when buying something for the first time (20% say it is extremely important). Meanwhile, a slightly smaller share (66%) says it is important to be able to try something out in person (with 15% saying this is extremely important).

Many Americans are using their cellphones while inside physical stores to help with purchase decisions or to get a better price

why buy goods online essay

The survey asked about four different ways that people might utilize their mobile phones while making purchasing decisions inside physical stores and found that calls for advice and assistance are especially common: Nearly six-in-ten Americans (59%) say that they have used their cellphones to call or text someone while inside a store to discuss purchases they are thinking of making. Just under half (45%) have used their phones while inside a store to look up online reviews or to try and find a better price online for something they are thinking of purchasing. And a relatively small share of Americans (12%) have used their cellphones to physically pay for in-store purchases.

Why shop online: top reasons consumers do so

According to the latest statistics , the ease and convenience of online shopping dominate consumers’ list of top reasons to shop online, with around half of their main motivations directly related to these factors.

The top reason consumers prefer to buy items online is the free shipping option offered by ecommerce stores. More than half (50.6%) of consumers list it as one of the main reasons they shop online.

In other words, they would much rather enjoy the ease of having their purchase delivered to them at no cost instead of going out to a store to physically view and inspect the product, purchase it, and obtain it immediately after purchase—even if it means having to wait.

The possibility to pay for the product upon delivery also has a role to play in consumers’ willingness to shop online. In fact, nearly one-fifth (19.8%) of consumers say among their top reasons to shop online is the ability to pay with cash on delivery. So aside from enjoying free delivery services, online shoppers also like the option to make cash payments only when they receive their product. Being able to return their purchases easily is also a motivating factor—33.2% say it’s why they buy things online.

The convenience of getting purchases delivered to them that online shopping offers also extends to its speed. Of internet users’ top reasons to shop online, next-day delivery is one of them. Just over one-quarter of online shoppers (30.4%) say it’s a motivating factor behind their online purchases. Another factor related to convenience is the easy checkout process, for which 30.6% of consumers list as one of their main reasons to shop online.

Why shop online: factors beyond convenience

Though ease and comfort form the basis for the popularity of online shopping, there are other reasons consumers enjoy it.

For some of them, the ability to save money and defer full payment are also their top reasons to shop online. Statistics show that 39.3% of consumers say having coupons and discounts to apply to their online purchases drives them to shop online, while 27.2% do so because they’re able to collect loyalty points.

Band 9 Essay Samples | Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Shopping

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published December 2, 2014 · Updated April 25, 2023

Nowadays online shopping becomes more popular than in-store shopping. Is it a positive or a negative development? Give your reasons and examples.

Now that we can buy just about anything with a few mouse clicks from the comfort of our home, very few people actually feel the need to venture into brick and mortar stores. There is no denying the fact that online shopping has become more popular than in-store shopping. This trend has both positive and negative aspects.

The huge popularity of online shopping can be attributed to the fact that it makes shopping easier. It saves both time and money. Buyers no longer have to drive all the way to shops to buy things. Also, online stores tend to offer attractive prices probably because they have lower overhead costs. This allows them to sell items for deeply discounted prices. This can lead to major cost benefits for shoppers. In addition, online shopping makes it easy to buy things from any part of the world. Even if an item is not available in your country, you can buy it from online stores. Online shopping also allows you to compare prices before hitting the purchase button.

On the flip side, the ease of online shopping has made many people compulsive shoppers. Most of us spend lots of time on the internet every day. And while we are on the internet, we get bombarded with numerous advertisements. For a compulsive shopper, this is a good reason to splurge. The fact that online shopping encourages us to buy things that we do not need or use cannot be denied. This can lead to debts. Also, there are security concerns. When you buy things online, you run a small risk of getting your financial information exploited by hackers. Of course, good anti-virus and anti-malware programs can offer a great deal of protection. But almost every week, we hear about data breaches at major online retailers.

To conclude, online shopping has several advantages and disadvantages. However, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Of course, the shopper has to exercise some common sense and keep their device free of malware if they want to enjoy the benefits of online shopping.

250 Words Essay on Online Shopping

Introduction.

Online shopping, a digital revolution, has transformed the traditional shopping experience. It provides a platform where consumers can purchase goods and services from the comfort of their homes, eliminating geographical boundaries.

Convenience and Variety

One of the primary advantages of online shopping is the convenience it offers. Consumers can shop at any time, from anywhere, without the need to queue in stores. Additionally, it provides a wide variety of products, from electronics to groceries, all under one digital roof.

Price Comparison and Reviews

Online shopping platforms allow consumers to compare prices and read product reviews before making a purchase. This transparency fosters informed decision-making, leading to enhanced customer satisfaction.

Economic and Environmental Impact

E-commerce has significant economic implications. It has created a global marketplace, boosting competition, and driving down prices. However, it also poses challenges to small, local businesses. Environmentally, while it reduces the carbon footprint associated with physical shopping trips, it increases packaging waste and carbon emissions from delivery vehicles.

Security Concerns

Despite its numerous benefits, online shopping is not without risks. Cybersecurity threats, such as identity theft and fraud, are significant concerns. Therefore, it’s crucial for consumers to shop on secure websites and avoid sharing sensitive information.

In conclusion, online shopping has revolutionized the retail landscape, offering convenience, variety, and transparency. However, consumers must be vigilant about cybersecurity threats. As the digital age progresses, it’s crucial to find a balance between the convenience of online shopping and its economic, environmental, and security implications.

500 Words Essay on Online Shopping

Online shopping, a term synonymous with the digital age, has revolutionized the way consumers interact with the marketplace. It denotes the act of purchasing products or services over the Internet, a practice that has seen exponential growth due to technological advancements and changing consumer behavior.

The Evolution of Online Shopping

The genesis of online shopping can be traced back to the 1990s with the advent of the World Wide Web. The first secure retail transaction over the Web was either by NetMarket or Internet Shopping Network in 1994. Today, it has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry, with companies like Amazon, Alibaba, and eBay leading the charge. This evolution has been catalyzed by the proliferation of smartphones and high-speed internet access, making online shopping a convenient and time-saving activity.

Advantages of Online Shopping

Online shopping offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it provides consumers with a wider range of products than traditional brick-and-mortar stores. This is because online stores are not limited by physical space, allowing them to offer a more diverse selection of goods.

Secondly, online shopping allows for price comparisons. Consumers can compare prices from different online stores to ensure they are getting the best deal. This is a significant advantage over traditional shopping, where price comparison is more time-consuming and less efficient.

Lastly, online shopping offers unparalleled convenience. Consumers can shop from the comfort of their homes at any time, thus eliminating the need to travel, saving both time and energy.

Challenges of Online Shopping

Despite its numerous advantages, online shopping is not without its challenges. The most significant of these is the lack of physical interaction with the product before purchase. This can lead to dissatisfaction if the product does not meet the consumer’s expectations upon delivery.

Additionally, online shopping is susceptible to cybercrime. Consumers’ personal and financial information can be at risk if the online store’s security systems are not robust enough.

The Future of Online Shopping

The future of online shopping looks promising, with advancements in technology poised to further enhance the online shopping experience. For instance, augmented reality (AR) is expected to play a significant role in online shopping, allowing consumers to virtually try on products before purchasing them.

Furthermore, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) will enable more personalized shopping experiences. AI can analyze consumers’ shopping habits and preferences to provide tailored product recommendations.

In conclusion, online shopping has transformed the retail landscape, offering consumers unparalleled convenience and a wide range of products. While it does pose certain challenges, the continuous advancements in technology promise to mitigate these issues and enhance the overall online shopping experience. As we move further into the digital age, online shopping will continue to evolve and shape consumer behavior.

Online Shopping Essay

500+ words online shopping essay.

The trend of online shopping has increased in recent times with the increase of e-commerce and digital technology. With just a single click, you can shop for everything by sitting at your home as per your choice, convenience and budget. This essay on online shopping will help students learn about the pros and cons of online shopping. We have also compiled a list of CBSE Essays on different topics to help them improve their essay-writing skills. These essays will also help them improve their scores on the English exam.

What Does Online Shopping Mean?

Online shopping is the activity of buying products and services over the internet using a web browser or mobile app. It means buyers have to go online to reach a seller’s website and then select the product they want to purchase. The buyer can pay for the goods and services either online with a credit or debit card or upon delivery. Online shopping sites are also known by many other names such as e-shop, e-web-store, e-store, internet shop, web-store, web-shop, virtual store and online store. An online shop creates a physical analogy for buying products or services. Some of the famous online retailing corporations which facilitate the experience of online shopping are Amazon, eBay, Flipkart, Myntra, etc.

Online shopping is a growing area of the digital world and technology. Establishing a store on the Internet gives various options to consumers. With the growth of online shopping, most businesses have started selling their products online. Now, just having physical stores is not enough in this fast-paced world. Having online store interfaces for consumers has also become essential for running a business in the current scenario.

Benefits of Online Shopping

There are numerous advantages of online shopping. People feel more convenient while shopping online. They can shop from anywhere at their own convenient time through easy and safe payment methods. Online shopping has empowered consumers with various advantages such as convenience and time-saving, lower search costs, better product selection, lower prices, etc. One of the biggest benefits of online shopping is that you can buy the items you want with just a single click. Online stores are open 24 hours a day and are accessible from any location with an internet connection.

Online stores carry more variations and provide more varieties of a product as compared to traditional stores. This is because online stores don’t need to attractively display their items on shelves, and they can keep a larger amount of inventory on hand. They might also have small amounts of each item since they don’t need to display them and can order more from their supplier as needed.

Online shops tend to provide more information about items for sale than you would get in a physical store. Product descriptions most often include a description from the manufacturer, another description from the vendor, specific technical and size details, reviews from professional magazines and journals, and reviews from people who have bought the product. Having all this information available when you are considering a purchase makes you a more informed consumer without having to perform extra research by yourself.

Online stores are not burdened by the costs of running a physical store, such as the rent of the physical premises and wages of sales staff. The cost savings by online stores lead to lower pricing on the internet, passing on cost savings to shoppers. The internet encourages online vendors to compete with one another by lowering prices.

Disadvantages of Online Shopping

The benefits of shopping online also come with potential risks and dangers. When you shop online, you can’t touch or try out the product. You have to depend upon product pictures only. You can’t buy the product instantly. If you don’t get the product in hand immediately after payment, you have to wait for delivery, which can take days to weeks. There is no guarantee that you will get the product in its original shape; it might get damaged on the way. Sometimes, the product is very different from the pictures and description due to various reasons and also has poor quality. If, after receiving the package, expectations weren’t met, you need to go through a returns process which can be time-consuming. Apart from these, there is also a chance of security threats from online shopping. If the site is not secured, you have a risk of losing your card information.

Online shopping is one of the convenient ways of purchasing different products. However, there are some products which are better if they are purchased from physical stores. So, in the future, we can expect online stores to improve their technology, making way for a much easier and faster shopping experience.

If you have plans to take the International English Language Testing System or IELTS exam , you must know the exam pattern. To help you tackle the writing section, we have outlined two sample  essays on online shopping that can help you know how to gain a high score. Read thoroughly to understand the flow, tone, and points to keep in mind.

Table of Contents

What do you have to say about online shopping: essay 1, do you think online shopping has multiple impacts: essay 2, important ielts exam resources.

Online shopping is an absolute boon. While its obvious benefit is that it enables the flexibility to order from the comfort of your home, that’s not all.

Apart from a relaxed experience, one also gets more choices, assured quality across sites like Flipkart and Amazon and a vast range of discounts and offers. This popularity of online shopping has forced even the biggest of businesses and brands to resort to and trust e-commerce platforms.

Not just customers, sellers too get many advantages. As an owner of an online store, you also get an array of benefits through online shopping. The most significant benefit is that the world becomes your oyster! You gain increased sales and revenue given that you are now not limited to a particular city, area, or geography. Your business can receive orders from international clients to buyers in the country's remotest towns.

However, although buying and selling online goods has numerous benefits, many people on the internet tend to dupe others and hack details. Hence, it is best to be careful when shopping online and to use safe and secure interfaces.

Everything in this world has both pros and cons. The same is the case with online shopping. Let’s start with the positives.

The most significant advantage of online shopping is that you can easily place an order from the comfort of your home. One need not wander from one retail store to another or go to the mall. Additionally, minimal physical contact with others makes it ideal for times like the pandemic. So, all in all, one saves energy, time, and money in the process.

That’s not all. Online shopping also allows you to buy products for a cheaper amount. One also has access to a more extensive stock online,, so you never have to be disappointed about the lack of availability of your chosen outfit in your size or any other product that you wish to buy.

Lastly, in today’s fast-moving world, online shopping is indispensable. It also has allowed us to shop for our loved ones who live across states or countries.

In terms of the negatives, these online shopping stores can lead to you spending way more money than you would have intended. Additionally, the most significant issue with online shopping is that the item turns out to be different from what you saw online. Such wasted time and effort could be an issue, especially if you want something urgently.

But, all in all, the impacts of online shopping are multi-fold. It depends on your experiences and how you feel about the concept. Being careful and ordering ahead of time could be a great way to reduce the negative consequences of online shopping.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay on online shopping/virtual shopping/e-shopping; with planning and model answer

This IELTS Writing Task 2 post is about ‘online shopping and its merits and demerits’ . Here, I’ve discussed the advantages and disadvantages of virtual/online/e-shopping and presented a model answer on this Task 2 question. This model answer can guide you to write an answer to any online shopping related essay.

Let’s have a look at the question we are going to discuss today.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay on online shopping/virtual shopping/e-shopping; with planning and model answer

The language of this task 2 question can be different in different exams.

Here’s another example of the same question:

An increasing number of people are buying what they need online.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for both individuals and companies to shopping online?

Nowadays, e-shopping or shopping online has an increasing trend among shoppers. It has both positive and negative sides. First, we need to make a plan for writing on this topic.

Here’s a short plan that may help you.

Planning and organisation:

Here is how I’ve planned the essay with a 4-paragraph structure:

  • Introduction: topic + thesis (2 sentences can be sufficient): Introduce the topic – ‘online shopping getting more popular’. Then write a thesis on how you are going to show that there are some positives and negatives of the issue.
  • Body paragraph on the reasons behind virtual shopping being so popular: You can write about straightforward ideas e.g. people get more convenience, and availability or choice of products. Give some real-life examples here.
  • Body paragraph on the negative sides of online shopping: Again, present some very general ideas e.g. customers get cheated and people become more isolated. Give some real-life examples here too
  • Conclusion: restate your ideas Online shopping has both advantages and disadvantages. You can give your personal opinion on how the disadvantages can be reduced.

Now let’s take a look at the model answer.

Model answer: expected band score – 7.5 to 8.0

In recent years, the rate of in-store shopping has plunged due to vast opportunities for buying different products including daily necessaries from hundreds of online stores. This essay will try to demonstrate chances such as convenience and product availability as the reasons behind the popularity of e-shopping whereas it will focus on swindling and isolation as the pitfalls of this issue.

Initially, the prime reason behind the popularity of e-shopping is convenience which can be easily understood from the thousands of virtual shops all over the world. To illustrate, people nowadays are busier than ever because of the fast pace of the world and they want to save as much time as they can for relaxation. Virtual shopping gives this magnificent prospect of time-saving and so people enjoy taking it. Besides, superstores sometimes run out of products in the precise moment when people need them which online shops rarely have this crisis. For instance, I needed a flat-screen monitor a few months ago but my local store had it out of stock. When I peeped into some online stores I found it easily on eBay.

Meanwhile, though shopping on the internet looks very promising, it is not without its setbacks. Many people, mostly the newcomers, regularly complain of getting tricked on virtual shopping and the rate of complaints is increasing at a faster rate. To explain, one of my friends has recently got swindled when he paid in advance for a smartwatch. Additionally, people often become isolated in their rooms through e-shopping which can affect their feelings and behaviour. As an example, a friend of mine started shopping online a couple of years ago even though the nearest superstore was only 500 metres away. His neighbours, nowadays, describe him as an ill-mannered and antisocial person which, needless to say, is the result of being home and becoming isolated from the outer world.

In brief, virtual shoppers obtain greater benefits if compared to in-store shoppers. Converting such shopping to a stress-free experience, it is turning out to be progressively more convenient. However, as clients may sometimes get deceived and become cut off from the social world, concerned authorities should look into the matter cautiously. (360 words)

Here are some other Task 2 questions which can be answered taking help from the given essay example on online shopping:

  • Some people support online shopping because it is convenient, while others argue that shopping on the internet poses threats. Discuss both views and give your opinions.
  • Nowadays on-line shopping has become more popular than in-store shopping. Is it a positive or a negative development?
  • Nowadays many people go shopping in their free time. Shopping has replaced many other activities that people used to choose as their hobby. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development?
If you have written any answer to this question, you can post it in the comment box and we can discuss about it in details.

20 Pros and Cons of Shopping Online

Find great deals online, but be safe about it

why buy goods online essay

  • The Ultimate Guide to Shopping Online
  • The Ultimate Guide to Online Learning at Home
  • The Ultimate Guide to Skype

There are tons of online shopping sites where you can buy everything from plane tickets and flat-screen TVs to food, clothes, furniture, office supplies, movies, and lots more. While shopping online is convenient and fun, there are some disadvantages. Know the cons to realize the benefits of shopping at a traditional store.

The Pros of Shopping Online

There are, of course, distinct advantages of online shopping:

Time Convenience

In comparison to a brick-and-mortar store with fixed hours, online shopping venues are available any time, day or night. This is especially useful for parents with small children, anyone who works throughout the day, and during times of inclement weather.

Shopping Apps

Shopping from an app is a convenient luxury. Whether you're homebound or able to visit a store, shopping from your phone is a uniquely awesome experience.

Price Comparisons

When you visit a store, you most likely settle for whatever price the vendor has placed on a particular item. With online shopping, you can compare prices from hundreds of different vendors. Grocery store price comparison apps are a great option if you're not interested in doing this manually.

Discounts and Notifications

Online stores want to keep you as a customer, so they may offer deep discounts, rewards, and cash back if you sign up for their newsletters. This can keep you updated on all the best upcoming sales. Coupon codes—like the ones you can get from coupon code sites —are also extremely popular when shopping online.

Infinite Choice

Shelf space in a physical store is limited, which means the variety of goods is limited. This isn't true with online stores, where choices are abundant. If you don't see what you want at one store online, move on to the next one. As the consumer, you have the power to do that.

No Size Limitation

Another benefit is when the product you want to buy is too big to haul in your vehicle. Buying a boat from an auction site or ordering a tiny home online are just two examples of situations where your car just won't do the job.

Private Shopping

Ordering online is the preferred way to get something discreetly. Nobody has to see what you're filling your cart with, and some places even offer inconspicuous packaging so your delivery person is also none the wiser.

Zero Parking Struggles

Finding a parking spot can be a big reason you don't stop at a store. Especially around the holidays, there's a major benefit of no congestion when shopping online. When it's really busy, you might not even remember where you parked your car !

Home Delivery for the Disabled

Buying oversized items and not having to worry about parking are benefits everyone can take advantage of, but if you're physically disabled to the point that you can't drive or walk through a store, online shopping might be your only solution to ordering food, essential items, and other goods.

Easy Access to Consumer Reviews

It's easy to access consumer reviews for pretty much any product you can think of online, which makes for informed purchases. If you're not sure if you're up to buying something, conduct a little research by checking out customer reviews.

No Pressure Sales

If you don't want to experience awkward approaches by eager salespeople, you don't have to put up with that online. While you could consider pop-up ads a similar experience, they're a bit easier to suppress. Car auction websites are a great example of this.

Fewer Impulse Buys

This one depends on your shopping habits. If you find it easier to buy things you see in passing as you walk through a store's aisles, online shopping could save you money and even help you make healthier choices.

More Payment Methods

Another benefit of online shopping is that you can pay for things differently than you can at a physical store. Some retailers support PayPal, Bitcoin, or zero-interest payment plans, for example.

The Cons of Shopping Online

Here are a few disadvantages of internet shopping that might deter you from making your next purchase online:

No Inspection Ability

Things you order online could be larger or smaller than how they appear in the pictures, or the measurements listed for the product could have been written down incorrectly. And when you buy clothes online, you can't feel the material, see how it fits around your waist, or notice how it's made. Most online stores make it easy to return items for this reason.

Can't Always Talk to Someone Immediately

If you have a question about what you're about to order, or what you just ordered, you can't just walk up to an employee. You might instead have to wait a full day or longer to get your question answered. This situation is improving, however, as many sites have added an instant chat service or automated bot-answering screen to address concerns and answer questions on the spot.

Must Wait for Delivery

Need something no later than this afternoon? Not many online shopping sites have same-day delivery, and none of them offer the on-the-spot, take-home advantage that a physical store does. Some online shopping sites take weeks to deliver your order (though, they're in the minority).

Shipping Problems

You're more likely to have your package arrive broken, wet, melted, etc., or not arrive at all, when you're not the one who picked it up yourself. Even packages that do arrive could sit outside long enough for theft to occur.

Shipping Costs

Depending on what you buy, you could spend the same amount on just shipping costs, or sometimes even more. In-store shopping has no need to charge extra for shipping. Plus, depending on where you live, you might pay a bit more due to special taxes for online shopping.

Privacy and Security

Privacy and security are legitimate concerns for any online shopper. Your payment information could get stolen from the site, or someone who works there could copy your bank details and use them later on their own purchases. It's also hard to immediately recognize whether an online store is real or just there to scam you.

There are precautions you can take when shopping online to make the experience more secure. For example, pay attention to whether the site uses HTTPS , and protect your online accounts with secure, but different , passwords.

Legality Concerns

While this isn't a widespread problem, you could accidentally buy something that's illegal where you live. The product might very well be available from the website you're on, but it could also be illegal to order in your area. It's much easier for a website to offer these kinds of products than a store because websites can be created quickly and hosted all over the world with less oversight or concern for international shoppers.

Compare and Contrast Essay: Online Shopping vs. In-Person Shopping

Over the recent year shopping has taken two turns, the have the most classic form in person shopping and online shopping. They may be similar in their basics but online shopping and in person shopping are different based on the experience, time consumption, and the variety and availability of the items. They may be but the environment changes the situation a person is in and the interaction one has go through home or in an actual store.

Experience is a major component in shopping be it experience with the way a shop or way a website is set up. Amazon and target are two good examples in the difference between online and in person. While shopping in amazon.com consumers can expect to find almost anything with ease and minimal problems, but there can be other factors that can lead to problems. For example, consumers internet can be slow, or their phones could be cut off because they forgot to pay their bill. In person shopping does not have problem with slow internet or forgotten phone bills, any shopper can browse and find what they need or finds something that they might have needed but forgot. But in person shopping also has their downside for instance a shopper may forget the list of items they need or run into other fellow customer that will bother them believing them to be an associate of the store. In the end online shopping experience has a better impact on the shopper.

Another component is time consumption. Many shoppers are workers as well and need to organize their day to be early to their jobs and have time for their shopping for home necessity. Online shopping is time consuming but can be controlled because it can be done from anywhere. A consumer can be at home shopping and getting ready for work and still make it in time. But of course, there are consumer that get stuck and stay online shopping locked onto their screen looking for items they need or just want. In person shopping is good because you can browse on your way to work early in the morning and get your necessities and leave easily. But there is the possibility of getting stuck in traffic. Traffic can happen at any given time and a shopper can shop and then find out they are stuck and would be late for work. Given the time consumption of each online shopping comes to the top for less time consumption because traffic wouldn’t faze it at all.

Lastly it comes down to variety and availability. Variety and availability brings in more consumer to look and buy for items they need. Online shopping can have variety to the max. You have many shops at your disposal and can move to each site with ease. The chance of online shops to not have the product are low and if they don’t have what a consumer need then their other websites. With shopping in person, the chance of items being out of stock are higher than online. The shopper then must leave and go to another store where they may or may not have the item they need. In online shopping a consumer can find almost exactly what they need no problem but in person shopping chance are almost less than half of online shopping making online shopping more convenient.

In the grand finally of online shopping and in person shopping consumers can have better experiences online shopping. Time consumption would go in favor for online because of its flexibility of location and speed of looking for items. For variety and availability online shopping come out as more favorable.

Consumer Behavior: How, Why and When Consumers Buy Goods? Report

Similarity between consumer behaviour in china and australia, differences between the consumer behaviours in china and australia, reference list.

Consumer behavior can be described as how consumers buy and consume goods and services. Consumer bahaviour is basically concerned with studying the various consumers purchasing and consumption patterns. Consumer behavior will address the fundamental questions of how, why and when consumers buy goods.

It is also concerned with how consumers consume goods and later dispose them. It looks at the various reasons why consumers buy a certain bundle of goods. Consumer behavior is also concerned with the time period when consumers buy certain types of goods and services (Schiffman, 2010).

Consumer behavior varies from place to place and also among individuals. This variation can be attributed the following reasons: variations in cultures and beliefs, variation in consumer tastes and preferences and the purchasing powers of consumers. Consumers have different tastes and preferences.

These varied tastes and preferences largely determine how consumers are going to buy certain goods and services. For example, consumers in china have different tastes and preferences compared to those in another country like France (Schiffman, 2005).

Also, consumer cultural practices have an impact on how consumers behave with regards to product purchase and consumption. The cultural and religious practices have a positive correlation to consumer’s preferences.

For example, in most parts of Africa, some religious practices forbid the use of some animal products. Such a generation is likely to consume less meat products which in turn affect the consumption pattern in that area.

Consumer behavior is also largely affected by consumer purchasing power. This is determined by the availability of capital or money a consumer has for purchasing goods and services. If consumers have a lot of cash, then they are likely going to spend more and purchase more goods and services (Schiffman, 1997).

On the other hand, if consumers have less money, then they are going to have a low purchasing power which will eventually affect their purchase behaviours. For example, in most developed countries, there is a high level of consumption of goods and services.

This is attributed to the fact that, the economy of such countries is stable and most consumers have enough money to spend on consumption. On the other hand, in most parts of the developing countries, consumers, on average, have low purchasing power which reduces their consumption trends.

Consumers in such countries have less cash at their disposal hence they cannot afford most of the goods and services (Tyagi & Kumar, 2004).

China is considered one of the largest economies in the world, being ranked as the third best economy in the world. Australia, on the other hand, is considered one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

With these differences in economic gaps, consumer behavior differs greatly in these two countries. Consumer behavior in Australia and China, however, has some similarity as well. These are discussed in the paragraphs below.

Consumer behaviour may also involve activities that are geared toward unmasking the best marketing strategy for a product. This will include studies to determine the most influential way of reaching a large number of customers. With the advent of information and communication technology, most consumers in China and Australia prefer reading newspapers, listening to radios and watching television (Alon, 2003)

From the research conducted, more that 60% of interviewed consumers in China pointed out that they are influenced to buy a product trough listening to the various advertisements in the media. Also, more than 65% of respondents interviewed in Australia indicated that, they are largely influenced to buy a product through media advertisements.

The following table indicates the findings obtained from the research undertaken

Another similarity between consumer behaviour in China and Consumer behaviours in Australia is the spending power of consumers. Consumers in both countries have a high spending power which is attributed to the rising wages in the two countries.

Wages have risen in both countries and this has increased the consumer’s purchasing powers in the two countries. Consumers are able to purchase goods they want, which has shifted the ambition of the various consumers.

This drift in ambition is in line with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Primary needs in both countries are highly met, and as a result, most consumers in these two countries are concentrating on satisfying Maslow’s upper needs (Chan, 1999).

There exist some differences between the consumer behaviour in China and in Australia. These differences are attributed to the economic growth level of the two countries. China is considered as a developed country and it is experiencing the age of mass consumption while Australia on the other is a developing economy. As a result, quite a number of differences exist between the two countries, in terms of consumer behaviour.

Firstly, there is a difference in the kind of goods and products being purchased in both countries. China is at the age of mass consumption and most consumers in China are basically involved in buying goods and services for leisure. Such goods and services may include travelling, palatable goods and clothing and fashion products.

On the other hand, Australia is a growing economy and has not fully developed to the stage of mass consumption (Blackwell & Engel & Miniard, 2006). As a result, most consumers are involved in the purchase of technological and engineering products.

Such products include electronic and electrical devices, educational materials and products as well as manufacturing products. From the research conducted, more than 70% of Chinese indicated that they spend most of their wages on luxury products even if they do not require them.

On the other hand, more than 69% of Austrians indicated that, they spend most of their wages in investments and buying technological developed products and services.

Secondly another notable difference in the consumer behaviour between China and Australia is the underlying reason for purchase of the products.

China is considered a country with rich cultural practices. The Chinese people are known all over the world for having a rich culture that is well respected and observed with keenness. On the hand, the Australians do not have unified cultural practices that are observed throughout the year (Blackwell & Engel & Miniard, 2006).

These cultural practices largely affect how consumers buy goods in the two countries. For example, in China, most cultural practices encourage the preservation of the beauty of their skin because they consider their skin to be holy.

As a result, most Chinese will do everything possible in order to maintain their skin. This leads to most Chinese buying cosmetic products that will help them preserve their skin.

On the other hand, Australians have no binding cultural practices. They are, therefore, not much concerned with buying beauty and cosmetic products. From the research conducted, more than 64% of respondents in China revealed that they are ready and willing to buy cosmetic products as a cultural practice of preserving their skins.

Thirdly, another difference that exists in the consumer behaviour between the two countries is the manner in which the consumers purchase their products and services. Most consumers in Australia will budget for what they are going to buy and wills stick to their budget during the time of purchase (Hoyer & Macinnis, 2008).

On the other hand, most Chinese consumers will buy goods without budgeting and if they have a budget, very few Chinese consumers will stick to it. Some Chinese consumers will decide what to buy when they are in the selling stores while others will be moved to buy goods simply because of promotions (Chan, 1999).

From the research conducted, more than 65% of interviewed Chinese consumers indicated that they decide on what to buy while they are in the stores. 15% of interviewed consumers indicated that they decide what to buy because of the promotions being carried out on the products, while 10% indicated that they stick to their budgets, whenever they visit stores.

Also another major difference is about the knowledge the consumers have for the various products. Consumer knowledge about product will largely affect the nature and manner in which they will purchase a product.

In china, according to the research conducted, most consumers are well knowledgeable about the various products and services. They are well endowed with knowledge about products, authenticity of products and the genuineness of products (Chan, 1999).

On the other hand, most Australia’s consumers indicated that they are not familiar with advanced knowledge about products, and it was hard for them to distinguish genuine products from products that are not genuine.

They indicated that, this is attributed to the fact that there are no well-developed mechanisms in Australia that enhance product knowledge awareness.

Most Australian consumers indicated that there are no valid forums that can be used to educate them on consumer goods and services (Schiffman, 1997).

The lack of education forums to educate and sensitize consumers on knowledge about products largely contributed to the ignorance among various Australian consumers. This ignorance eventually affected the purchase behaviour and consumption trends.

The following table indicates the number of consumers who were aware of the the product they are buying

From the above data, it is evident that most consumers in China are well knowledgeable about what they buy, while in Australia, most consumers do not have much information about what they buy.

In China, more than 83% of interviewed consumers indicated that they have full knowledge about the products and services they buy. On the other hand, In Australia, close to 60% of consumers indicated that they have knowledge about the products and services they buy.

This disparity in consumer knowledge largely influences the consumer behaviours because they will dictate the buying habit and product preference options among consumers.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample: Buying Second-hand Products

ielts writing task 2 sample second-hand things vs new ones

In some countries, people are buying fewer new things and more second-hand things.

What do you think are the reasons for this? Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In some parts of the world, people prefer purchasing previously owned products over new ones. They opt to buy such items mainly for personal and financial reasons, but I firmly believe that this trend has far-reaching benefits.

There are two main reasons why many people believe that second-hand items are worth buying. First, such items usually come at a fraction of the price of the brand-new products. For instance, people buy used vehicles due to the depreciation of such machines in their first few years. In other words, buyers believe that a well-maintained car that is only a few years old could save them thousands of dollars. Second, some people believe that older items often come from a bygone era when quality was prized over quantity. This belief mainly stems from the fact that many new products, such as refrigerators, require costly regular maintenance, while the old ones continue to work without such requirements. Therefore, opting for quality used items is believed to help people be in a better financial standing at the end of the year.

The above-mentioned personal gains, in my opinion, are insignificant compared to the environmental and economic benefits of the second-hand economy, which supports my optimistic view of this tendency. From an environmental perspective, buying pre-owned products would decrease the demand for the manufacture of new ones, hence reducing the depletion rate of natural resources such as oil, water, and trees, which are used as raw materials. From an economic standpoint, such purchasing habits help local businesses to grow. For example, if a car manufacturing company received less local demand for new vehicles, it could focus more on export and expand into foreign markets, which will lead to more foreign currency earned. Eventually, all these benefits will improve the nation’s environmental and economic health.

In conclusion, the move toward purchasing pre-owned items is mainly due to the lower purchase costs and better reliability, and I think that its benefits positively impact the natural world and economy.
