art and creative writing contest 2023

New York, NY – September 7, 2022 – The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship program for creative teens, has officially opened the 100 th annual call for submissions. Student artists and writers in grades 7–12 from across the United States and Canada are invited to enter original works for recognition, scholarship opportunities, and to earn their place in the program’s centennial class of medalists, joining the ranks of notable alumni who received recognition through the program as teens—including Ken Burns, Derek Fordjour, Joyce Carol Oates, Jos é Parl á, and Tschabalala Self .

To learn more about the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, or to enter work in any of the program’s 28 categories, visit: artandwriting.org

For the past 100 years, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been a space for teens to push boundaries and make waves with their creative pursuits. The program has served as a launch pad for generations of artists, writers, and professionals in a wide variety of industries, with many luminaries attributing their confidence to pursue their careers to the Awards. Since their inception, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have encouraged the passions, talents, and perspectives of millions of teens, validating their creative abilities and the belief that their voices matter.

“ Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have championed teens’ artistic endeavors and provided a space for creative young people to express themselves, and contribute their voices and ideas to a larger conversation. The original works of art and writing we’ve recognized throughout the past 100 years have not only been inspiring and thought provoking, but together reflect our country’s history, culture, struggles, and achievements. As we enter our second century, our mission has never been more vital, and I can’t wait to see what a new generation of young artists and writers shares with us through the Awards,” said Christopher Wisniewski, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit administrator of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

To kick off the 100 th year of recognizing the nation’s creative teens, the Alliance is excited to announce that worldwide bestselling author and award-winning illustrator Dav Pilkey ( Dog Man , Cat Kid Comic Club , Captain Underpants ) will underwrite the scholarships of 12 high school seniors for their outstanding portfolios—two Gold Medal Portfolio Award student scholarships worth $12,500 each as well as 10 Silver Medal with Distinction Portfolio Award student scholarships worth $2,000 each. As part of The Dav Pilkey Awards which total nearly $50,000, each recognized student’s educator will also receive $1,000 for each of the two Gold Medal Portfolio Awards and $250 for each educator of Silver Medal with Distinction Portfolio Award recipients.

As a young adult, Dav Pilkey, whose teacher encouraged him to illustrate and write books, won a national competition which led to the publication of his first picture book. He continued to make many acclaimed books for children before being awarded a Caldecott Honor. For more, visit //mediaroom.scholastic.com/davpilkey .

The Dav Pilkey Awards join a long list of both new and previously established scholarships and sponsored awards. Annually, the Alliance partners with individuals, foundations, and corporations to offer scholarship opportunities for students in certain categories or addressing particular themes.

The 2023 scholarships and cash awards include:

·        *NEW* The Flaunt It Award: Developed in collaboration with Don’t Hide It, Flaunt It (DHIFI, Inc.), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to advance acceptance, tolerance, and mutual respect for people’s visible or invisible differences. The Award, underwritten by Don’t Hide It, Flaunt It, RBC Foundation USA, and Morgan Stanley, recognizes teens who look or feel different and who reflect and share their experiences (whether it be challenges, acceptance, or a celebration) about what makes them unique.

o    The Flaunt It Award includes two $1,000 scholarships (one for art and one for writing) for teens whose outstanding work explores DHIFI’s theme: “The things that make me different make me, me.”

·        *UPDATED* Portfolio Awards: The program’s highest national honor, 16 Gold Portfolio Award recipients will now receive $12,500 scholarships for their writing or art portfolio, an increase from $10,000 previously, and their educators will receive $1,000 awards; 24 Silver Medal with Distinction Portfolio Award recipients will now receive $2,000 scholarships, an increase from $1,000 previously, with their educators receiving $250 awards.

·        The Herblock Award for Editorial Cartoon: Underwritten by The Herb Block Foundation, this award provides three young artists with $1,000 scholarships for visual art that offers commentary on current events, social events, or political topics, and their educators with $250 awards.

·        New York Life Award: Underwritten by the New York Life Foundation, this award recognizes six students on the national level with $1,000 scholarships for their work exploring personal grief, loss, and bereavement, and their educators with $250 awards. Additional $500 scholarships are also available for two students from each of the following states: California, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas.

·        Alliance/ACT-SO Journey Award: In partnership with the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), this award provides full-tuition scholarships to attend summer art or writing programs for up to ten ACT-SO scholars, who also receive Gold or Silver Keys at the regional level of the Awards.

Students ages 13 and up residing in the United States, U.S. territories and military bases, or Canada are invited to submit original work in any of the Awards’ 28 art and writing categories, including drawing and illustration, photography, flash fiction, poetry, film and animation, and journalism. All works are selected for Awards based on originality, skill, and the emergence of personal vision or voice and without knowledge of the student’s name, gender, age, ethnicity, or hometown. Works are reviewed first on a regional level by more than 100 local affiliates of the Alliance, and those that receive Gold Keys then are adjudicated nationally by an impressive panel of industry experts. Entry fees are $10 for individual entries and $30 for portfolios. Fees can be waived for any potential participant for whom the fee is a barrier for entry. Fee waivers are made possible, in part, by BLICK Art Materials.

Deadlines for entries vary by region. The National Medalists of the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards will be announced in March 2023, and throughout the spring the Alliance will host a series of virtual and in-person celebrations for students, families, and educators, culminating with the summer launch of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Traveling Exhibition, a touring public exhibition featuring select 2023 National Medalists’ works. Recipients may have their work published in anthologies showcasing stories, essays, and poetry by teen authors, and highlighting paintings, photographs, drawings, and other works by teen artists. Discover the finest writing contests of 2024 for fiction and non-fiction authors — including short story competitions, essay writing competitions, poetry contests, and many more. Updated weekly, these contests are vetted by Reedsy to weed out the scammers and time-wasters. If you’re looking to stick to free writing contests, simply use our filters as you browse.

Why you should submit to writing contests

Submitting to poetry competitions and free writing contests in 2024 is absolutely worth your while as an aspiring author: just as your qualifications matter when you apply for a new job, a writing portfolio that boasts published works and award-winning pieces is a great way to give your writing career a boost. And not to mention the bonus of cash prizes!

That being said, we understand that taking part in writing contests can be tough for emerging writers. First, there’s the same affliction all writers face: lack of time or inspiration. Entering writing contests is a time commitment, and many people decide to forego this endeavor in order to work on their larger projects instead — like a full-length book. Second, for many writers, the chance of rejection is enough to steer them clear of writing contests.

But we’re here to tell you that two of the great benefits of entering writing contests happen to be the same as those two reasons to avoid them.

When it comes to the time commitment: yes, you will need to expend time and effort in order to submit a quality piece of writing to competitions. That being said, having a hard deadline to meet is a great motivator for developing a solid writing routine.

Think of entering contests as a training session to become a writer who will need to meet deadlines in order to have a successful career. If there’s a contest you have your eye on, and the deadline is in one month, sit down and realistically plan how many words you’ll need to write per day in order to meet that due date — and don’t forget to also factor in the time you’ll need to edit your story!

For tips on setting up a realistic writing plan, check out this free, ten-day course: How to Build a Rock-Solid Writing Routine.

In regards to the fear of rejection, the truth is that any writer aspiring to become a published author needs to develop relatively thick skin. If one of your goals is to have a book traditionally published, you will absolutely need to learn how to deal with rejection, as traditional book deals are notoriously hard to score. If you’re an indie author, you will need to adopt the hardy determination required to slowly build up a readership.

The good news is that there’s a fairly simple trick for learning to deal with rejection: use it as a chance to explore how you might be able to improve your writing.

In an ideal world, each rejection from a publisher or contest would come with a detailed letter, offering construction feedback and pointing out specific tips for improvement. And while this is sometimes the case, it’s the exception and not the rule.

Still, you can use the writing contests you don’t win as a chance to provide yourself with this feedback. Take a look at the winning and shortlisted stories and highlight their strong suits: do they have fully realized characters, a knack for showing instead of telling, a well-developed but subtly conveyed theme, a particularly satisfying denouement?

The idea isn’t to replicate what makes those stories tick in your own writing. But most examples of excellent writing share a number of basic craft principles. Try and see if there are ways for you to translate those stories’ strong points into your own unique writing.

Finally, there are the more obvious benefits of entering writing contests: prize and publication. Not to mention the potential to build up your readership, connect with editors, and gain exposure.

Resources to help you win writing competitions in 2024

Every writing contest has its own set of submission rules. Whether those rules are dense or sparing, ensure that you follow them to a T. Disregarding the guidelines will not sway the judges’ opinion in your favor — and might disqualify you from the contest altogether.

Aside from ensuring you follow the rules, here are a few resources that will help you perfect your submissions.

After you submit to a writing competition in 2024

It’s exciting to send a piece of writing off to a contest. However, once the initial excitement wears off, you may be left waiting for a while. Some writing contests will contact all entrants after the judging period — whether or not they’ve won. Other writing competitions will only contact the winners.

Here are a few things to keep in mind after you submit:

Many writing competitions don’t have time to respond to each entrant with feedback on their story. However, it never hurts to ask! Feel free to politely reach out requesting feedback — but wait until after the selection period is over.

If you’ve submitted the same work to more than one writing competition or literary magazine, remember to withdraw your submission if it ends up winning elsewhere.

After you send a submission, don’t follow it up with a rewritten or revised version. Instead, ensure that your first version is thoroughly proofread and edited. If not, wait until the next edition of the contest or submit the revised version to other writing contests.

USU Creative Writing & Art Contest Announces 2023 Winners

By Ashley Wells | March 14, 2023

A work of art depicting a park in a rural area.

"Back down the corridor" by Ben Nathan took first place in the graduate student category of USU's 30th annual Creative Writing & Art Contest.

A work of art depicting a park in a rural area.

USU’s Creative Writing & Art Contest has named the winners in its 30th annual competition, recognizing the best creative work by USU students.

Open to all USU undergraduate and graduate students from all departments and disciplines, the contest awards top writers of fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction, as well as visual artists in drawing, painting and photography. Each category received the blind review of expert judges drawn from the USU and Cache Valley arts community.

Jacob Taylor was named graduate fiction winner for their story “(in)Voluntarily Bound.”

“I began writing this story while thinking about the added stress the winter months place on unsheltered populations and individuals fleeing violence,” Taylor said. “This story grew from intersections of vulnerable populations placed in terrible situations.”

On her winning fiction piece, “Dead Leaves,” undergraduate winner Amber McCuen said: “When trying to respond to a prompt, I looked around my room for inspiration and saw the cowboy hat that I bought as a joke hanging up on my wall. I came up with two brothers fighting over it and then expanded from there. Over the course of the revising process, the story changed dramatically — I changed the point of view, removed a character and wrote an entirely new ending. This story has grown very dear to me and holds pieces of myself and my own experience throughout it, and I’m very excited to get to share it.”

“Abatre” by Jacob Taylor was selected for the graduate nonfiction winner.

“This essay sprung from my experiences working with the unsheltered population in Salt Lake County,” Taylor said, “specifically navigating the difficult and complex processes of abatement (removal of homeless encampments, often resulting in significant loss of physical resources for unsheltered individuals) implemented by the local government.”

Jay Paine’s essay “We Will Walk Along the River” was chosen as the undergraduate nonfiction winner.

“After learning about a friend’s death and studying Ancient Greek, I wondered if an ancient language could have helped me to avoid regret and grapple with grief,” Paine said. “My essay was born from this curiosity. However, the more I wrote, the more I realized that language itself is inadequate for coping with such experiences.”

Lauren McKinnon was named graduate poetry winner for her selected poems. On her winning poem “Moab Mourns Her Ocean Body: a Conversation,” Lauren said: “In Moab, I spent a lot of long days hiking by myself in Arches National Park. The red rock bodies made me weep because they made me feel seen. They were beautiful, ancient and weathered. They withstood thousands of years of beating from wind and flood. People loved these rocks because of the way the natural elements had beaten them into a shape — arches, hoodoos, sandstone fins. None of this was its original form; thousands of years ago Moab was an ocean, but it couldn't be denied that the desert was beautiful because of the way the weather had contorted its body. This made me feel seen, healed, and sad all at the same time.”

Sariah Gibby was named undergraduate poetry winner for selected poems “Huitlacoche,” “Rollerblading down the Vert Ramp at the Skate Park by Mountain View Elementary,” and “Grandma Time.”

“I write poetry to preserve the people around me,” Gibby said. “It's the little moments that matter the most.”

This is the seventh year the contest has partnered with USU’s international undergraduate literary journal, Sink Hollow . The winning entries will be published in a special contest issue in April, giving this work an international audience.

The winners will also share their work locally, when they will give a reading at Helicon West . “The Helicon reading of the contest winners’ work is always one of the best nights of the year on campus,” said contest director Charles Waugh. “We get to celebrate not only the winning work, but also our whole, vibrant writing community here at USU and in Cache Valley.”

The Helicon West reading of the contest-winning work will begin at 7 p.m. April 27 in Room 101 of the Merril-Cazier Library on the USU Logan campus. As always, Helicon West is free, uncensored, open to the public, and will include an open-mic session.

Andreas P Bassett

PhD student Furkan Kir's research article “English-medium instruction (EMI) as the great (un)equaliser: experiences of former EMI students in Turkey” has been published in the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Kir’s article explores the experiences of students who dropped out of an English-medium university in Turkey and postulates that strict English proficiency requirements at some Turkish universities pose a problem for many students.  Fine work Furkan.

Molly Porter's article “’Damn the Empire!’: Imperial Excess, National Nostalgia, and Metaphysical Modernism in the Poetics of Parade’s End” has appeared in the special issue "Ford Madox Ford's War Writing" in the April 2024 publication of Humanities. Congratulations, Molly!

The Kennedy Center recently named graduate student Jack Wolfram's play, Paradise Untapped, as a regional semi-finalist for the 2024 John Cauble Award for Outstanding Short Play. A portion of Wolfram’s play was staged alongside three other rising playwrights' works at the Region VII Festival in Spokane, WA. Paradise Untapped’s premise is proper clever:

Paradise Untapped, a one-act play rooted in critical fabulation, tells the story of Deborah Milton and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. The two entered our world a lifetime apart in England to different world-renown intellectuals, tethered across time by a shared fiery intellect and creative compulsion. Both yearn to make a name for themselves and do right by their gifts, tell stories that will be remembered, but doing so proves diametrically opposed to their respective circumstances.

Congratulations Jack!

Jennie Baker, Abygail Gutierrez, and Jack Wolfram have each earned highly competitive Disability Travel Awards from the Conference on College Composition and Communication (4Cs), the largest conference in the field of writing studies. These awards recognize "scholarship dedicated to improving knowledge about the intersections of disability with composition and rhetoric, the value of disability as a source of diversity, inclusive practices and the promotion of access, and the value of disability as a critical lens" and provide funding to help cover the costs of attending the 2024 CCCC conference being held in Spokane.  Congratulations!

Also in the 4Cs category, PhD student Anselma Prihandita has been awarded a 2024 Scholars for the Dream Award from the Conference on College Composition and Communication. This prestigious award funds travel to the convention and confers an opportunity to connect with important mentors outside of our home institution.  Nice work Anselma!

Ph.D. student, Andreas Bassett was recently selected as the Bibliographical Society of America's Katharine F. Pantzer New Scholar and has been invited to speak at the upcoming 2024 Bibliographical Society of America annual meeting.  Quite the honor – good going Andreas!

Remember Rasheena Fountain, from about a page up, publishing award winning poetry? This current Ph.D. student in English and MFA graduate (‘21) will be a featured artist at the new Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts (PRAx) on Oregon State’s campus in Fall 2024. Fountain’s “Dropped Down Blues” Black speculative and blues audio-visual project, set in Pipers Creek during salmon migration, will be featured in the exhibition How to Carry Water: Memory in Three Questions. The exhibition brings together contemporary visual artists and humanities scholars in shared observations and questions about watersheds. So interesting Rasheena, congrats!

And Tenzin Sangpo, a second year MFA student, was declared a “Dalai Lama Graduate Scholar – 2023" by the Ganden Phodrang Foundations of the Dalai Lama.  What an honor Tenzin!

E. J. Koh has been named a finalist for the 2024 Young Lions Fiction Award by The New York Public Library and Young Lions for her novel The Liberators.

Julia Park and undergraduate student Emily Tang have been selected to the Husky 100. Each year, the Husky 100 recognizes 100 undergraduate and graduate students from the UW Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma campuses in all areas of study who are making the most of their time at the University of Washington.
