Frequently Asked Questions

The Top Hat gradebook houses every digital interaction between instructors and students. The results from attendance, quizzes, tests and assignments (including correctness and participation data) are available in the gradebook. Sync your Top Hat folders and course roster with your LMS at the start of the semester, and you’ll be given the option to include student grades as part of your sync. All data housed in our gradebook will now be automatically available in your LMS. We offer seamless integrations with all major LMS providers including Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle and Sakai

There are a number of benefits to using educational software in the classroom, including: The ability to easily track student progress, like participation and performance data, which can influence the pace and breadth of instruction. Customizing content keeps learning relevant and up to date by adding case studies and research, as well as supplementing learning materials with assessments or discussion questions. Reduce administrative tasks through autograding functionality and by centralizing course preparation and organization. Make learning more engaging through interactive readings and assignments outside of class and using polls, quizzes and multimedia elements in class to encourage students to participate and apply their knowledge. Improve flexibility and accessibility for students by centralizing resources in one place for them to use in class, at home, or on the go through Internet-connected devices.

There are literally hundreds of educational software tools available on the market today. Choosing the right option depends on your goals. Perhaps it's improving student engagement, encouraging collaboration between students or getting better insights into progress and performance. One thing to keep in mind is the potential impact on students (and faculty) in terms of the cost and added complexity that may come with using multiple tools. Top Hat conveniently provides a single platform you can use to manage your course and provide an engaging and interactive learning experience before, during and after class.

Institutions use a variety of different learning platforms. The backbone for most is typically a learning management system (LMS) such as Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle and Sakai. These platforms serve as a system of record, enabling instructors to plan and manage their courses, while measuring student progress with gradebooks. Many instructors use additional tools, including student response systems, digital courseware and testing software to engage students, provide access to learning materials (including interactive, digital textbooks), as well as give assignments and secure tests and exams. What makes Top Hat unique is that it complements learning management systems by serving as the student engagement layer, while helping to eliminate the need for additional tools that add cost and potential friction for students and faculty. Top Hat is currently used by 750 of the top 1,000 postsecondary institutions to deliver interactive readings and assignments, host polls and discussions, manage assessments and gain rich insights into student progress and performance to enhance the learning experience.

Why educators and students love Top Hat.

“i use top hat to assign online homework and create in-class interactive activities. overall, top hat lowered the dfw rates and improved student performance in my course.”.

Assignments, exams, & grading.

When we hear the word “assessment,” most of us think about course assignments and exams . While assignments and assessments are not the same thing, assignments are often used as formative or summative assessments of student learning. As formative assessments, assignments can support the scaffolding of student learning, allowing students to practice new skills so they are able to apply them in more complex projects. Instructors can provide timely feedback to support skill-building and correct errors. As summative assessments, assignments can help instructors evaluate student achievement of learning outcomes.

Grades are a hot topic for students and faculty alike, as they can determine a student’s status, scholarship eligibility, and future prospects. Instructor grading practices and philosophies can vary, often causing student anxiety and concern. Faculty conversations about grades often focus on fairness, rigor, equity, and how to truly measure learning.

The growing set of resources on this site will explore good practices for transparent and equitable assignment design, exam design and administration practices, as well as the array of conversations around grading practices. Alternative grading practices such as Ungrading and contract grading have piqued the curiosity of instructors looking for ways to engage students in their own learning and make learning rather than grades the primary focus of instruction.

Facilitating and Assessing Student Engagement in the Classroom

Online or Remote Exams: Considerations and Effective Practices

Remote, hybrid, and online teaching and learning have prompted most instructors to rethink course instruction and question previously held assumptions about how people learn. How to administer exams can be a particularly thorny issue, especially for courses with large enrollments

Assessment in Large Enrollment Courses

Many of my conversations with faculty focus on the challenges they have with doing good learning assessment in large classes. The best learner-centered assessment approaches are no match for 200-person enrollment. I mean, can you imagine reading 200 5-page essays?

How to Grade Online Assignments and Exams

An increasing number of Swarthmore faculty are using online grading for assignments and exams.  Since students create most of their work digitally, it makes sense to submit an assignment electronically and avoid the need to print a hard copy.  ITS provides many different ways to collect and grade assignments.

Moodle has several tools for electronic assignments and exams.

Moodle Assignments

The Moodle assignment activity is an easy way to collect assignments from students and simplify the process of setting up due dates, granting individual extensions, and keeping track of any students that did turn in their assignment.  Moodle also provides a basic interface for viewing and grading the assignment.  It is possible to set up more complex grading forms, including rubrics.  The Moodle assignment also works well for courses with student graders because it eliminates the need to deal with stacks of paper assignments and makes it easy for the instructors to see the grading status of each assignment.

Moodle Turnitin Assignments

In addition to the built-in Moodle Assignment, there is a Moodle Turnitin Assignment.  Turnitin is best know for plagiarism detection, but also includes a grading tool that make it easy to mark up papers with frequently used comments, enter text feedback, and even record audio notes to a student.

Moodle Quizzes

The Moodle Quiz activity can be used for an online exam.  Quizzes are set up to be taken within a certain time period.  Students can be prompted to either enter text directly in the quiz, upload a document with their responses, or answer multiple-choice type questions.  This tool is handy for keeping track of a timed exam while allowing for extended time or alternate test days for certain students.  If you dread reading student handwriting in a blue book, this is worth a look.

Other tools

In addition to Moodle, ITS provides a number of other ways to grade assignments electronically.

Academic Technology has been running the Teaching with Tablets  program for several years and has provided many faculty with iPad Pros and Microsoft Surface tablets to facilitate teaching and electronic grading.  The tablets come with a stylus that is perfect for marking up student papers.

Honors Exam Software

If a higher level of security is needed, ITS can set up the same software as used for the Honors Exams for a midterm or final.  This software blocks the use of other applications and connections to the Internet.

Grading Code

The following tools are aimed at assignments and exams that involve programming.

GitHub Enterprise

If you are asking students to submit computer code, Swarthmore has its own installation of GitHub for use by community members available at github.swarthmore.edu .  It is possible to set up and share repositories with students, collect the code, then grader and enter feedback to the repository.  The Computer Science department has done a great job at scripting this workflow to make it easy for faculty and students.

MATLAB Grader

If your students code in MATLAB, the MathWorks has just released  MATLAB Grader to make it possible to assign and collect student work.  This is a new program and if you are interested in trying it out, please email [email protected] and we’ll be in touch.

If you are asking students to code in Python, Swarthmore’s JupyterHub installation could be useful to provide a web-based Python coding environment for students.  ITS is working to set up the nbgrader plugin to facilitate distributing, collecting, and grading assignments.  If you’d like to check it out, contact Andrew Ruether in ITS (aruethe2, x8254).

Exam Techniques

  • Managing Exam Stress
  • Galway Exams 101

Most courses at NUI Galway involve coursework, continuous assessment, or assignments – terms often used interchangeably – over the academic year.

Coursework  (or continuous assessment) refers to all of the graded work that you complete over the semester or the academic year, other than your formal end-of-semester exams. This can include assignments, in-class activities and tests, or online activities and tests. An  assignment  (sometimes called a ‘take-home assignment’) usually means a piece of work that you complete in your own time (to a deadline) and without close supervision.  In-class and online tests  more closely mirror exams in that they are timed and are often, but not always, supervised. They are organised by your discipline (usually a lecturer or tutor), rather than by the  Examinations Office . See the list at the bottom of this page for an idea of the many types of assignments that students complete at NUI Galway.

A major advantage of coursework is that it can reduce the pressure associated with end-of-semester exams. Many students find ‘100% exams’ quite stressful. Coursework gives you opportunities to demonstrate your learning and skills in other – often more creative and engaging – ways than exams usually do. Coursework can motivate you to engage with module content from the beginning of term. Often the coursework that you complete over a semester helps you to prepare for the final exam, so there can be a double benefit to making the effort to do well in your coursework.

Coursework means that most students start clocking up (or losing!) marks early in each semester. The burden of coursework can be considerable and some students are not prepared for the amount of time and effort required to complete their coursework to the standard they would like. Doing well in your coursework requires a range of organisational and other skills not strictly related to your understanding of the module content.

Blogs

A blog is basically an electronic journal – usually a webpage that is updated on a regular basis. NUI Galway’s virtual learning environment (VLE), Blackboard, includes a facility for student blogging that some lecturers require students to use to record their ideas, activities, progress, reflections, and so on. Blogs are usually written in an informal, relaxed tone. See also learning journals/reflective journals below.

Case studies

Case studies are usually real-life but sometimes hypothetical examples that illustrate or relate to what you have learned in class. In some modules, you will be asked to apply your learning to case studies. Case studies are used extensively in business and law.

Usually you are required to identify and analyse the key issues that the case study raises, apply your understanding of the topic to the case at hand, and, sometimes, make some conclusions and/or recommendations.

Essays

The academic essay is the ‘classic’ method of assessment by means other than an exam. Academic essays are usually written in a formal, impersonal tone, require extensive research, and must follow strict conventions for citation and referencing. See the Reading and research and Academic Writing  sections of the Academic Skills Hub for more.

Experiments

Many science courses involve students conducting experiments and then writing up the results. At undergraduate level, most of your experiments will be conducted in laboratories (‘labs’), and you will be required to write a so-called lab report (see below) afterwards.

Fieldwork

Lots of courses involve ‘fieldwork’, in which students go beyond the confines of the NUI Galway campus to work ‘in the field’. Examples include archaeological excavations, geological surveys, research expeditions at sea, and so on. Usually you will need to keep notes or a journal about your fieldwork as you complete it, and include these notes as part of the report that you write up when the fieldwork is complete.

Group projects

At some point in your studies, you are likely to be required to work with others to produce a joint project, report, poster, or presentation, for example. Working with other students can be fun but also challenging. Learning to overcome the challenges of teamworking is a key skill for work and life. See the Communication Skills  section for more.

Lab reports

Students taking science, engineering, and health science courses spend a significant amount of time in laboratories or ‘labs’ conducting various tests and experiments. You will often work as a pair in labs, alongside a lab partner. After a lab, you will usually be required to write up a detailed lab report that includes your observations, actions, diagrams, and conclusions.

Learning journals/reflective journals

In some modules, you will be asked to reflect on your learning or your experiences as the semester progresses. You may be asked to write a weekly, fortnightly or monthly journal, and/or a longer journal that sums up your reflection over the semester or academic year. Reflective writing tends to be more informal than other academic writing and is much more subjective. See the Reflective practice and reflective writing  content in the Critical Thinking  section of the Academic Skills Hub for more.

Literature reviews

A literature review usually refers to a survey of all or some of the academic literature relating to a certain topic or subject. Literature reviews require extensive Library research and should aim to give a ‘snapshot’ of the current thinking (by acknowledged experts) around a particular topic. See the Reading and Research Skills and Academic Writing  sections of the Academic Skills Hub for more.

Multiple-choice questions (MCQs)

Some assignments take the form of multiple-choice questions (MCQs for short), where you are presented with a question, a phrase, or a ‘stem’ and asked to choose the correct answer from a range of options (usually between three and five). Multiple-choice questions are also used extensively in exams. See the Exam Techniques  content in this section of the Academic Skills Hub for more about MCQs.

Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs)

OSCEs are practical exams that are used extensively in the health sciences (medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, podiatry, and so on). Students move from ‘patient to patient’ (with the ‘patients’ usually played by actors) and are assessed on a range of skills and competences, including key clinical and communication skills.

Online assessments

Lots of modules will require you to complete some online assessments over the course of the semester. Sometimes you will need to buy a textbook that comes with a unique code, giving you access to the web platform where the assessments are housed. They may include multiple choice, drag-and-drop, essay-type, problem-solving, and other types of questions. Other online assessments must be completed through Blackboard. Some online assessments are timed – for example, you may be required to complete them within 25 minutes or one hour. Others you can come back to repeatedly over a longer period of time.

Oral exams

Students studying languages other than English (Irish, Spanish, French, German, Italian or Welsh) will typically take oral tests and exams, in which you are assessed on your proficiency in speaking the language – that is, your fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and so on.

Posters and poster presentations

Posters (and poster presentations, in which students give a talk about their poster content) are popular in science, health science and engineering. A poster is basically a large, one-page document that summarises a student’s (or a group of students’) work on a particular topic. This could include an original research project (see below) or a literature review (see above), for example.

Portfolios

A portfolio is a collection of work that showcases your learning for a particular topic or module. Portfolios can be ‘hard copy’ (that is, made up of paper-based documents) or ‘soft copy’ (electronic portfolios are known as e-portfolios). Portfolios are usually built up over a full semester or academic year.

Practical demonstrations and exams

Practical exams or demonstrations can take a variety of forms, but they usually involve students showing that they can do something within a certain time frame. For example, medical students will take ‘spot tests’ where they are shown various types of tissue or body parts and must identify those tissues or body parts. OSCEs (see above) are also practical exams.

Presentations

A presentation usually involves speaking to an audience for a specified period of time about a certain topic, often using presentation slides or a poster as a visual aid.  Presentation skills are highly valued in the working world, so it’s good to get some practice in as a student. See the Communication, teamwork and presentation skills section of the Academic Skills Hub for more.

Problem sheets

Students taking maths or maths-related courses are often presented with problem sheets, usually involving a series of problems to be solved through applying formulas and performing calculations. Problem sheets may also include true/false, short answer, and complete-the-sentence-type questions.

Projects

Projects can take many forms, such as building a prototype, designing and carrying out research, evaluating the research of others, and so on. You may be asked to complete a project on your own or as part of a group. Usually when an assignment is described as a ‘project’ it involves some kind of hands-on activity, rather than simply surveying the work of others. However, see research project below.

Reports

Like projects, reports can take many forms, from a report on a fieldwork trip that you have completed to a report on the current distribution of global wealth. Report writing is typically more ‘business-like’ than academic essay writing. Sentences may be shorter, the language used may be less formal or complex, and the content tends to be more factual than theoretical. Students taking science and business courses are most likely to be asked to submit reports.

Research projects

Usually a research project means one of two things: a piece of original research that you design and carry out yourself (or as part of a team), or a piece of research that surveys and evaluates the research that others have carried out in the field. See the Reading and Research Skills section of the Academic Skills Hub for more about how to do research.

Videos

Some students get the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through making a video rather than through more traditional written assignments. If you’re required to make a video, you may need certain equipment and training, which your lecturer or tutor should provide or advise you about.

This list gives a flavour of the wide variety of assessment methods (other than written exams) that are used at NUI Galway to enhance and assess your learning.

When it comes to take-home assignments, regardless of what form they come in, there are some features common to all assignments that you really need to be clear about before you start. See our assignment checklist for more on this.

Why Assignments Are Better than Exams in College

Avatar of John Hannah

While working on written assignments can be tough, most students would be more than happy to write a dozen homework tasks in place of a single exam. It is difficult to imagine another aspect of college life that would be as despised – and for a good reason. However, what exactly makes exams so bad? Why are students so afraid of them? Why does spending your out-of-school time working on, let’s say, an accounting assignment, feel preferable to taking an exam during your designated college hours? In this article, we will look into it and try to answer this question.

1. Exams Are Time-Limited

One of the most hated things about exams is that they give you only a very limited amount of time to complete your tasks. Typically, your time is limited to no more than a couple of hours. Over that period, you have to get acquainted with all the assignments, decide which of them you should better tackle first, remember how you are supposed to be solving this or that kind of problem, and so on. Usually, the time allotted for exams is barely enough for an average student to complete all the assignments – in case everything proceeds smoothly. If you stumble somewhere or forget how to do something, you can easily lose momentum and lose an opportunity to complete everything on time. All this creates stress; even those students who have no trouble solving their math problems start making mistakes out of sheer nervousness.

2. There Is No Chance to Ask for Help

When you take an exam, you are completely on your own. There is nobody to help you. It does not mean that most students just go around and say, “ Do my assignments ” to everybody they know when they work on their homework. It is the very possibility to ask for assistance that matters. Perhaps you always do all your homework on your own and never ask for help. Nevertheless, you are always a click away from going online to look up something: a few statistics related to your topic, the way you proceed with this programming difficulty, the name of a historical figure you just cannot get right. You may never use these opportunities, but you have them, and it creates a sense of confidence and security. When you take an exam, you have nothing but your memory, and it often feels woefully inadequate.

3. Exams Give Plenty of Opportunity for Cheating

Despite multiple efforts taken over the years to prevent it and punish those to resort to such tactics, cheating continues to be a major problem. The very nature of exams makes it a viable approach, and many students do not so much revise for exams as they develop methods to cheat during them. When there is such a cheap and effective alternative to actually studying, it is obvious that something is wrong with the system.

4. Students Study for Exams, not for Knowledge

An exam, in and of itself, is nothing but an artificial construct aimed at evaluating students’ grasp of a certain discipline. It has no meaning or value of its own. Nevertheless, exams currently occupy a central position in our educational system. Students at all academic levels study not so much to acquire knowledge and prepare for real-world challenges as they study to become better at taking exams. As a result, throughout all the years they spend in school and college, they work to become better at something that has nothing to do with real-life challenges and problems.

5. Exams Are a Test of Memory First and Foremost

It does not matter what form an exam takes and what discipline we are talking about. It is, by definition, primarily a test of memory rather than one’s analytical skills, creativity, or actual understanding of the subject. As long as you can repeat the facts, rules, and principles the way you have read them in a textbook, you are alright. It does not matter whether you understand what you have read. In fact, many students “read up” for their exams a few days or weeks before they take them and cram the information into their heads just so they can pass. Needless to say, this approach to studying means that most of this information is swiftly forgotten a few days or weeks after the exam, as they feel they no longer need it.

6. Exams Create a Lot of Unnecessary Stress

Even if we dismiss for a minute how stress and nervousness affect one’s performance during an exam per se, they influence students’ life in general as well. Exams tend to play a tremendous role in one’s academic evaluation. You may work hard throughout a term, get good grades, complete all your class and home assignments, and yet your final results are determined by a few hours in an exam hall that is completely unrelated to everything you did so far. It is not just stressful; it is demotivating and disheartening as well. Why bother doing all these assignments and paying attention in class in the first place if it all can be canceled out in an instant?

All in all, coursework is much better at reflecting the student’s skills, abilities, and progress made over time. It has its drawbacks, of course – for example, a professor cannot be sure the student has completed that Java assignment on his/her own, but neither is it possible to be sure if he/she passed an exam without cheating. When all is said and done, the results one shows over time, as demonstrated by multiple assignments, one’s activity in class, and participation in projects, provide a much more accurate picture of one’s abilities.

However, abolishing exams is hardly a solution – some kind of formal system has to be in place, and they have their positives. For example, they teach us how to solve problems under pressure. What is wrong with them right now is the amount of importance we attach to them – if we stop building the entire educational system around exams, they will lose many of their negative aspects.

Final Grade Calculator

Use our Final Grade Calculator to calculate your grades after your final exam below.

How The Final Grade Calculator Works

assignments and exams

The Final Grade Calculator is a helpful tool designed to assist students in estimating their final grade for a course. This tool allows students to input their current grades, future assignments, and the weight of each component. This section will provide an overview of the functionality and accuracy of the Final Grade Calculator.

Why I created the Final Grade Calculator

As a college student majoring in engineering, I’ve become very familiar with the stress of calculating grades and GPAs. With so many exams, projects, and assignments weighted differently, it can be hard to determine where you stand. This semester I realized I needed to get more serious about tracking my performance, so I decided to deeply explore grade calculators.

After bombing my first thermodynamics test, I started panicking about how it would impact my final grade. That’s when I began using an online weighted average calculator. By inputting all my scores and weights, I could estimate my grade – it was a C+ at that point. This motivated me to focus more on studying for the next exam. After getting a B+ on exam two, my projected grade went up to a B-. I was relieved!

While grade calculators are helpful, nothing beats actually talking to professors too. I’ll never forget pleading with my algorithms professor to round up my 89.7% to an A-. He agreed after seeing I visited his office hours and put effort into the class all semester. That small boost got me a 3.7 GPA that semester!

Now in my senior year, I try to pass on lessons to younger students. My advice is to stay on top of your performance by calculating your grade every few weeks. Don’t obsess over it, but do make adjustments as needed. Also, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself to professors – it can really pay off! Overall, be strategic, but remember grades don’t define you. I’m proud I took control of my academics. Now I feel better equipped to handle the ups and downs of life after college.

Ready to calculate your final grades?

Functionality of Final Grade Calculator

The Final Grade Calculator has a simple and user-friendly interface that allows students to input the relevant data. Users can input their current grades, assignment weights, and remaining assignments to calculate their potential final grade. The calculator will then provide an estimate based on the information provided. This allows students to:

  • Understand their current standing in the course.
  • Set realistic goals for the remainder of the course.
  • Decide if they need to prioritize certain assignments or seek additional help.

The calculator may also function as a motivational tool, as students can see how their efforts and improvement can impact their final grade.

Accuracy of Final Grade Calculator

While the Final Grade Calculator offers a helpful estimate of one’s final grade, it is crucial to recognize that this tool cannot guarantee absolute accuracy. The calculator’s accuracy depends on the information provided by the user. If there are errors in the input data, such as incorrect assignment weights or inaccuracies in projected assignment grades, the calculator’s results may be skewed.

The Final Grade Calculator serves as a guide to help students gauge their progress and set appropriate goals. However, it should not be relied upon as an infallible indicator of one’s final grade. Users are encouraged to approach these calculations with a confident and knowledgeable mindset, yet maintain a neutral perspective to ensure they are making well-informed decisions on their academic performance.

Math Behind Grade Calculation

Grade calculation formula.

The formula for calculating a final grade consists of assigning weights to different components, such as exams, projects, and homework. To use this method, you need to know the individual component scores and their corresponding weights in the overall grade. One common approach is to calculate the weighted average.

A weighted average is found by multiplying each component’s score by its respective weight and then adding these values together. This sum is then divided by the total weight. The formula for weighted average is as follows:

Weighted Average = (Score1 × Weight1 + Score2 × Weight2 + … + Scoren × Weightn) / (Weight1 + Weight2 + … + Weightn)

For example, if a student scored 85% on their midterm exam, which is worth 40% of their total grade, and 90% on their final exam, which is worth 60%, the weighted average would be calculated as:

Weighted Average = (85 × 0.40 + 90 × 0.60) / (0.40 + 0.60) = 88%

Importance of Math Calculators in Grade Calculation

Math calculators like the weighted average calculator and standard deviation calculator are useful for accurately determining final grades. These online tools save time and minimize errors that may occur when manually computing weighted averages and standard deviations.

A weighted average calculator automates the process of calculating grades with different weight percentages, simplifying the task for teachers and students alike. This is particularly helpful when there are numerous components to consider in determining a final grade.

On the other hand, a standard deviation calculator is an important tool used to measure the variability or dispersion of a set of grades. It helps to understand how deviated individual scores are from the mean score, which may indicate a need for adjustments in teaching methods or assessment strategies.

In conclusion, the math behind grade calculation involves using a weighted average formula to compute the final grade. Online calculators offer a convenient and accurate method for calculating these grades, reducing the risk of errors and ensuring consistency in the evaluation process.

Weighting in Final Grade Calculation

Impact of weighting on final grade.

Weighting plays a crucial role in determining a student’s final grade. The concept of weighting involves assigning different values or weights to various components of the course, such as assignments, midterms, and final exams. These weights reflect the significance of each component in the overall assessment of a student’s performance.

For instance, a final exam may have a higher weight than a midterm exam or a quiz. This is because the final exam is often considered more comprehensive and essential in assessing the student’s overall understanding of the course material. Weights can be represented as percentages or points, and the total weight of all components should add up to 100% or the maximum possible score.

A weighted average grade is calculated by multiplying each component’s grade by its respective weight and then dividing the sum of these products by the total weight. This method ensures that each component’s contribution to the final grade is proportional to its assigned weight.

Understanding Weighted Average Calculator

A weighted average calculator is a tool that helps students and educators quickly and accurately determine a student’s final grade based on the weights assigned to different course components. This tool simplifies the process of calculating the weighted average, eliminating the need for manual calculations and reducing the likelihood of errors.

To use a weighted average calculator, you need to input:

  • The grades obtained in each course component (e.g., assignments, quizzes, midterms, final exams)
  • The weight assigned to each component

The calculator then computes the weighted average using the formula mentioned above, providing the student’s final grade as a result.

For example, consider the following course component grades and their respective weights:

  • Assignments: 85% (weight: 30%)
  • Midterm Exam: 70% (weight: 30%)
  • Final Exam: 90% (weight: 40%)

Using a weighted average calculator, the final grade can be determined as follows:

(85 * 0.3) + (70 * 0.3) + (90 * 0.4) = 25.5 + 21 + 36 = 82.5

In this example, the student would receive a final grade of 82.5% after taking into account the weights of each component.

Understanding Different Grade Types

Dissecting letter grades.

When assessing students’ performance, schools often use a variety of grading systems. Among the most common are letter grades, which are typically based on a range of percentage grades. The letter grades, such as A, B, C, D, and F, convey a student’s overall achievement in a given course. It is essential to understand the specific breakdown of letter grades at an individual institution, as the ranges can differ from one institution to another. For example, an “A” grade may be assigned for a percentage grade range of 90-100%, a “B” for 80-89%, and so on.

Typical Letter Grade Breakdown:

  • A : 90-100%
  • F : Below 60%

Explanation of Percentage Grades

Percentage grades are a numerical representation of a student’s performance and are commonly used in final grade calculations. They define a specific value within a range of possible scores and offer a more detailed understanding of a student’s achievement. Percentage grades can be derived from various assignments, quizzes, tests, and other evaluation instruments throughout a course.

It’s essential to recognize the different weightings for each component in a course’s final grade calculation. For instance, homework assignments may constitute 30% of the overall grade, while exams can account for 70%. By considering these weightings, students can monitor their progress more accurately and strategically allocate their study time.

When trying to determine a final grade, students and teachers may find it beneficial to use a GPA calculator or other final grade calculation tools. These tools provide a comprehensive understanding of a student’s performance and can be useful for setting academic goals or identifying areas for improvement.

Role of Assignments and Exams

Importance of assignments in grade calculation.

Assignments play a crucial role in the grade calculation process, as they help students to understand course material and practice essential skills. In most courses, assignments comprise a significant portion of the final grade. Regularly assigned tasks, such as assignment 1, assignment 2, and assignment 3, contribute to the development of students’ knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Students are encouraged to actively participate in their coursework, focusing not only on exams but also on completing assignments. Assignments may include essays, lab reports, presentations, or any other task assigned by the instructor as part of the curriculum. Completing such tasks promptly and efficiently will significantly impact a student’s overall course grade.

Furthermore, consistent performance on assignments helps students avoid over-relying on test scores to boost their final grade. A strong foundation in coursework can provide a more balanced grade calculation and reduce stress related to exams.

Significance of Exams in Final Grade

Exams, comprising tests, quizzes, and final exams, are an equally important part of grade calculation in most academic courses. Exams typically assess a student’s ability to recall information and apply the knowledge gained through assignments and lectures. The performance in exams often constitutes a major percentage of the final grade, reinforcing the significance of thorough preparation for these evaluations.

The results from various types of exams provide instructors with a clearer understanding of the student’s grasp of the course materials. Exams highlight areas where the student may need further assistance, while also revealing the effectiveness of lectures and assignments in conveying essential information.

In short, exams serve as an essential tool in determining a student’s understanding of the course material. Both assignments and exams work together to ensure that a student’s final grade accurately reflects their mastery of the subject matter.

Real-time Application of Grade Calculators

Case study of a student using grade calculator.

In a typical scenario, a student wants to determine their current class grade and estimate the necessary final exam grade to achieve their desired overall grade. Using a grade calculator allows the student to enter their current grades from assignments, quizzes, tests, and other coursework to calculate their current standing in the class.

For instance, let’s consider a student who has received the following grades:

  • Homework: 80%, 90%, 95%
  • Quizzes: 100%, 85%
  • Midterm Exam: 88%

By entering this data into the grade calculator, weighted by the syllabus requirements (e.g., homework 30%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25%, final exam 25%), the student can determine their current class grade.

Setting Goals Using Grade Calculator

A useful aspect of grade calculators is their ability to help students set realistic goals for their desired final grade. The student can input their desired final grade percentage (e.g., 90%) and the calculator will determine the required final exam grade to achieve this target.

For instance, let’s say our student desires a final class grade of 90%. By using the grade calculator they have previously entered their current grades, they can determine the necessary score on the final exam to achieve this goal. The calculator may reveal that the student needs a 93% on their final exam to obtain a 90% final class grade. Armed with this information, the student can work strategically towards achieving their target grade by focusing on areas of the course material where they need improvement.

In summary, real-time application of grade calculators provides students with a clear understanding of their current academic standing and aids them in setting achievable targets for their desired final class grade. Utilizing a grade calculator can ultimately help students make informed decisions and maintain a more strategic and focused approach to their studies.

Grading System Across Various Institutions

Contrast between gpa and grade calculators.

The_grading systems at various institutions may use either a Grade Point Average (GPA) or a simple grade calculator to determine a student’s academic standing. The GPA takes into account the student’s performance in all their courses and assigns a weighted average to represent their cumulative achievement. A typical high school GPA calculator would consider factors like the number of total credit hours, letter grades, and grade points in each course to compute the GPA.

In contrast, a grade calculator usually focuses on class grades, where individual assignments, exams, and projects are assigned a specific percentage contribution towards the final grade. Teachers use these calculators to track a student’s performance throughout a course and give them valuable input on areas to improve.

Understanding the United States Grading System

In the United States, the grading system varies across different educational institutions but follows a general structure. Most institutions use a letter grading system, where each grade range is assigned a letter value (A, B, C, D, or F) and may include +/- distinctions for better accuracy. The GPA can then be calculated by converting these letter grades into a numerical value, called grade points, and taking a weighted average.

The following table presents an example of a commonly used grading scale:

It is important for students and teachers to understand the specific grading policies employed by their institutions in order to effectively track and evaluate academic progress, as there might be variations among different schools and colleges. This knowledge can also help students make informed decisions about course selections and academic goals.

Impact on Student Performance

Analyzing performance trends with grade calculation.

The use of a Final Grade Calculator allows students to monitor their performance throughout the semester. By consistently tracking their scores, students can gauge their proficiency in specific subjects, as well as identify areas where they may need improvement. This helps them make necessary adjustments to their study habits, leading to better overall success.

In a well-designed grade calculation system, individual components such as homework scores, test results, and project grades all contribute to the final grade. By breaking down this information, students can gain a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Regularly analyzing performance trends enables them to focus on making improvements to increase their average grade throughout the academic year.

Role of Final Grade in Overall Performance

The final grade plays a significant role in a student’s overall performance during a semester or academic year. It represents the culmination of their efforts in a particular course and directly influences their success in advancing to the next level of study. In addition, final grades often contribute to students’ cumulative weighted GPAs, affecting their eligibility for academic scholarships, internships, and extracurricular opportunities.

The relationship between final grades and student performance is not limited to individual achievements. A study on the effect of grades on student performance showed that low midterm grades did not negatively impact the final exam scores, suggesting that students can recover from early setbacks with diligent effort. By understanding the significance of their final grade, students may be more motivated to take proactive steps toward improving their performance.

In conclusion, utilizing a Final Grade Calculator and understanding the role of final grades in overall performance can greatly benefit students. These tools enable them to make informed decisions about their study habits and academic strategies, ultimately leading to better success in their educational endeavors.

Assignments and Exams

Assignments and exams are sometimes handled differently online than they are with in-person learning. Typically, your instructor will inform you of exam dates and time.

Assignments

Online courses.

Generally, assignments are completed and submitted online from within the Learning Hub. Your instructor will review and send their feedback to your course mailbox. Other students are not able to view either your assignment submission or instructor’s comments.

Correspondence courses

Assignments may be submitted to a marker, tutor or instructor—depending on the course—who marks and returns assignments to you. Assignments may be submitted by e-mail. Return times will depend on the schedule of the marker, tutor or instructor.

Examinations

Many online and distance learning courses have mid-term and final examinations.

Choosing a proctor

Some courses require you to nominate a proctor to supervise your exam session. A proctor ensures that all examination procedures and criteria set by BCIT and your program are adhered to—a process that is often referred to as invigilation. Your examination and instructions will be sent to your proctor who will then invigilate you for the period of the examination, verify invigilation criteria, and return your examination to BCIT for marking.

The person nominated should be a registered professional or a known testing service (e.g., college or university test centre). Registered professions include: educator, librarian, faith leader, nurse, hospital technologist, accountant, professional engineer.

For term-based courses, examinations may be scheduled for selected weeks in the term (e.g., weeks 5, 7, 9 for midterms and week 13 for final exams). Other courses may allow you to choose a date for your examinations.

Most programs publish a student handbook that provides further examination information to students registered in distance learning courses. Your course outline and program area staff will also have detailed information about examinations.

Related GPA Calculator

The calculators above use the following letter grades and their typical corresponding numerical equivalents based on grade points.

Brief history of different grading systems

In 1785, students at Yale were ranked based on "optimi" being the highest rank, followed by second optimi, inferiore (lower), and pejores (worse). At William and Mary, students were ranked as either No. 1, or No. 2, where No. 1 represented students that were first in their class, while No. 2 represented those who were "orderly, correct and attentive." Meanwhile at Harvard, students were graded based on a numerical system from 1-200 (except for math and philosophy where 1-100 was used). Later, shortly after 1883, Harvard used a system of "Classes" where students were either Class I, II, III, IV, or V, with V representing a failing grade. All of these examples show the subjective, arbitrary, and inconsistent nature with which different institutions graded their students, demonstrating the need for a more standardized, albeit equally arbitrary grading system.

In 1887, Mount Holyoke College became the first college to use letter grades similar to those commonly used today. The college used a grading scale with the letters A, B, C, D, and E, where E represented a failing grade. This grading system however, was far stricter than those commonly used today, with a failing grade being defined as anything below 75%. The college later re-defined their grading system, adding the letter F for a failing grade (still below 75%). This system of using a letter grading scale became increasingly popular within colleges and high schools, eventually leading to the letter grading systems typically used today. However, there is still significant variation regarding what may constitute an A, or whether a system uses plusses or minuses (i.e. A+ or B-), among other differences.

An alternative to the letter grading system

Letter grades provide an easy means to generalize a student's performance. They can be more effective than qualitative evaluations in situations where "right" or "wrong" answers can be easily quantified, such as an algebra exam, but alone may not provide a student with enough feedback in regards to an assessment like a written paper (which is much more subjective).

Although a written analysis of each individual student's work may be a more effective form of feedback, there exists the argument that students and parents are unlikely to read the feedback, and that teachers do not have the time to write such an analysis. There is precedence for this type of evaluation system however, in Saint Ann's School in New York City, an arts-oriented private school that does not have a letter grading system. Instead, teachers write anecdotal reports for each student. This method of evaluation focuses on promoting learning and improvement, rather than the pursuit of a certain letter grade in a course. For better or for worse however, these types of programs constitute a minority in the United States, and though the experience may be better for the student, most institutions still use a fairly standard letter grading system that students will have to adjust to. The time investment that this type of evaluation method requires of teachers/professors is likely not viable on university campuses with hundreds of students per course. As such, although there are other high schools such as Sanborn High School that approach grading in a more qualitative way, it remains to be seen whether such grading methods can be scalable. Until then, more generalized forms of grading like the letter grading system are unlikely to be entirely replaced. However, many educators already try to create an environment that limits the role that grades play in motivating students. One could argue that a combination of these two systems would likely be the most realistic, and effective way to provide a more standardized evaluation of students, while promoting learning.

Enter Class Grades

Calculator Instructions

  • In the top part of the form, enter how much your final exam is worth and the grade that you would like to get in the class. For example, your final test might be worth 20% of your overall grade and you want to get at least a 93% in the class. You would enter these numbers into the form.
  • In the bottom half of the form, enter a description (optional) of the classwork, the grade received for that classwork, and the weight of the classwork. Most class grades are made up of several components such as homework assignments, tests, exams, quizzes, class participation, attendance, etc. For example, a class exam might be worth 10% of your grade and you received a 95% on the test. You would enter those values into the form.
  • If you need more than four rows, press the "Add Row" button to add an additional line. You can add as many rows as you need.
  • Once you have finished entering your grades, press the "Calculate" button and the grade you need on the final exam will be displayed.

Final Grade Formula

final grade = ((g wanted x w total ) - gw) / w final

w total = w 1 + w 2 + w 3 + ... + w final

w 1 = weight of assignment #1

w final = weight of final exam

gw = g 1 x w 1 + g 2 x w 2 + g 3 x w 3 + ...

g 1 = grade for assignment #1

g wanted = grade wanted in the class

Example Calculation

Let's say your class has the following grading plan.

Now let's assume you received the following grades on your classwork.

Finally, let's assume that you want to get a 90% in the class. To determine what you need to get on your final exam in order to get a 90% in the class, let's do some math using the formula above.

First add the weight of all the class assignments together including your final:

w total = 10% + 10% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 100%

Next, multiple the grade you received on each assignment by the weight of the assignment.

gw = (91% x 10%) + (85% x 10%) + (75% x 20%) + (95% x 20%) + (97% x 20%) = 7100%

Now, calculate what you need on the final exam:

final exam grade = ((90% x 100%) - 7100%) / 20% = 95%

This is how you manually calculate your final grade. Of course, you can make your life a little easier using the calculator above!

What if my class grade is based on points rather than percentages?

Let's assume you have the following class syllabus that is based on points.

Let's assume you received the following grades.

To enter these grades in the calculator above, you first need to calculate your grade percentage for each assignment using the following formula:

grade percentage = points earned / possible points x 100

So taking your mid-term test grade as an example, we get the following:

mid-term test = 190 points earned / 200 possible points x 100 = 95%

In the weight column of the calculator, you would enter the possible points for each assignment.

Assuming you wanted to get at least a 90% in the class and your final exam is worth 250 points (i.e.the weight), you would enter the following information into the calculator.

In this example, you would need to get a 93.6% on your final in order to get a 90% in the class.
