A better approach to product reviews
We Buy Our Own Products
Unlike most websites, we do not get our review units directly from the manufacturers. Instead, we buy everything ourselves, like a normal customer. It means our units aren't cherry-picked by the manufacturers, but actually represent what you would buy.
Comparable Results
We put all the products we review under the same test bench, so they are easily comparable. Even our pictures are taken in a systematic way. We spend a lot of time comparing the products side-by-side to validate our results. Our test methodology is also on our website so you can confirm the results yourself.
Continuous, Perceptual Testing
We keep the products that we review until they are discontinued, so we can go back and compare them to ensure our reviews are still accurate. All our ratings are automatically calculated based on our test measurements, which are designed to match what really matters to a customer.
When a product is discontinued or no longer popular, we sell the purchased products locally. You can see what products we currently have for sale here .

What are the best review platforms in the UK?
Update: Due to changes by Google in 2020, you will now only be able to have star ratings in search engine results for individual product pages. If you have individual product pages, these should have product page schema markup applied to them to allow Google to read them as such. Scroll to the bottom of the post for more details on how to implement this!
Review platforms, when used and optimised correctly, have a huge influence in providing traffic and conversions to your brand.
A good review (or, even better, many good reviews!) acts as a stamp of approval for a company’s service or product, telling potential customers that the product is one to purchase. This is crucial for online retailers as a validation of the product or service – particularly when optimising appearances in the SERPs (search engine results pages).
Just how much of an influence will reviews have on the customer? A study from Podium and published in The Drum found that 93% of customers say online reviews impact their purchasing decision, making it crucial for a company to engage with online review platforms.
Going beyond the customer influence that reviews have and looking at the SEO implications for reviews, we need to look at how Google uses them, what platforms to focus on and what impact these have.
The impact that reviews have on customers being driven to your business’s website is shown in a study carried out by Richard Baxter, measuring click through rates. The test found that the meta description with a review-rich snippet included (ie. with stars shown in the description) had a click through rate of 26.32%, while the other descriptions tested (with sales-driven wording and informative wording) had click through rates of 21.52% and 14.93% respectively.
So reviews in your brands search results are needed. Here’s how to go about it.
List of Google associated review sites:
The platforms to be aware of when choosing an integrated review platform are those that have relationships with Google . These are sites that act as ‘sources of feedback’ to Google in determining reviews and, in turn, SERP rankings for your business:
- Ausgezeichnet.org
- Bazaarvoice
- Feedback Company
- Hardware.info
- Klantenvertellen
- kuchikomiking.jp
- PowerReviews
- ProductReview.com.au
- ResellerRatings
- Reviews.co.uk
- Shopper Approved
- ShopVote.de
- ShopAuskunft
- StellaConnect
- TrustedCompany
- Trusted Shops
- Verified Reviews
Of course, the review sites that you’re looking to concentrate efforts on maintaining from the above list will be those that are in the territories in which your business operates. Taking the UK sites from the Google associated list, we are left with the below:
- bazaarvoice.com/uk/
- bizrate.co.uk/
- reviews.co.uk/
- reevoo.com/en/
- trustedshops.eu/
- trustpilot.com
- verified-reviews.co.uk/
Positive reviews are a large factor that contributes to the health of a Google My Business profile and search visibility for a locally-focused business. While Google will take signals from the above review sites as indicators for SERP position and rating, a business should not ignore engaging with Google reviews, social media reviews such as Facebook and independent review platforms.
Take furniture store BoConcept as an example. Within the SERP listing for a branded search for ‘BoConcept Glasgow’ there are three points on the page dedicated to rating the business. One within the results as a rich snippet from Facebook’s reviews, and two sections within the Google My Business profile – Google reviews at the top and rankings from independent review platforms that Google has pulled; Facebook, Houzz, and Maclaren Electrical Services (which, incidentally, seems to be a mistakenly associated with BoConcept).
Anyone who was to search for this shop would have their eyeline drawn to each of these, influencing their immediate impression of the store, even before visiting the website.
Besides Google reviews and Facebook, which will be standards for most businesses to encourage customer reviews on, Houzz is a more tailored result for the homeware and furniture niche that BoConcept sits in. Be aware of similar platforms which cater to the specific niche of your business, as Google will likely know this and provide its listing as a variation from the standards.
What are the best review platforms for SEO?
In a post on the SEM Rush blog written by Jason Barnard, the top review sites for SEO visibility were highlighted measuring the number of keywords that the platform ranks for, the traffic this generates to the site and their SEO rank (SEM Rush measure)
The research found Trustpilot to be the top review platform if you want to increase visibility of your brand on a website where your customers can leave reviews. Each of these review sites are associated with Google, so while Trustpilot harbours the most visibility for SEO, being listed on each of the platforms and gaining reviews on each will be recognised by Google and pulled into your Google My Business profile.
Using reviews for eCommerce product page optimisation
For an eCommerce site, reviews for individual product pages can also be pulled through to appear on their listings on the search engine results page. This is a great way to help your page stand out from competitors in the organic search results.
The below example shows the product listing of robin food from the garden wildlife supply company, Ark Wildlife . As you can see, the review star rating has been pulled into the Google listing alongside other product information. Great for catching the eye and showing off good reviews!
To do this you’ll need two things –
- To feature one of the above review platforms on the product page – this should ideally be one platform across all of your products
- Product schema markup – this tells Google that the page is a product page, so it will treat it as such in the Google search results
Google Search Central has detailed information on their ‘ Product ’ page guide if you want to learn more about optimising your product pages with schema markup. If you’re interested in implementing this across your site and don’t know where to start, feel free to call us at Distinctly!

6 websites you can trust for product reviews and ratings
If you’ve spent any time researching a product online , you came across a lot of resources (and if you didn't find what you were looking for, you might have given up). Whether it’s a baby stroller , educational toys for your toddler, a comfortable pull-out sofa, or the best deal on Apple AirPods , there is no shortage of brands vying for your money in any product category. Since most products require an investment, you not only want the best quality you can find but assurance that it will last.
Sourcing the best recommendations combined with adding extended warranty protection will result in not only quality products at competitive price points, but coverage to protect your product for years to come. So before you start researching and shopping around, subscribe to Mulberry Unlimited . For just $9.99 a month, you'll get coverage for all your online purchases under the same product protection plan .
Now let's talk about finding the best quality products , and what online resources you can rely on to provide solid product reviews, ratings and recommendations. We’ve compiled a list of six online resources known for providing accurate and unbiased information, from product review blogs to consumer surveys. These can be your go-to sources when you're looking for trustworthy information on the best products, regardless of the product category.
1. Consumer Reports
For unbiased, data-driven information, Consumer Reports is a fail-safe option for product ratings and reviews. As a non-profit organization, Consumer Reports has been an unbiased source of information for consumers since 1936 (before online reviews were even popular!). Consumer Reports gathers data from surveys, tests, and consumer reviews, and compiles recommendations for the best products with the goal of providing trustworthy information for consumers.
You can search the over 7.7 million products that Consumer Reports has reviewed to get an assessment of the top competing products in a specific category, a score for each product that was tested or reviewed, and other valuable insights to help you make the most informed decision possible. By searching for things like "Consumer Reports mattresses" or "Consumer Reports dishwashers", you can get tons of great product reviews.
2. Wirecutter
Now owned and operated by the New York Times, Wirecutter is another trusted source for unbiased product reviews. With Wirecutter, you’ll find recommendations and reviews based on months of research, analysis, and input from experts and consumers alike. The Wirecutter deals and Wirecutter gift guides are also very popular around the holidays, providing recommendations by gift recipients and product category.
Although Wirecutter requires a paid subscription for unlimited access, you'll still find plenty of valuable insights for free. Wirecutter can help you avoid splurging on products that don’t live up to the hype, have features you don’t need, or don't hold up to normal wear and tear .
This is also why extended warranties are a cost-effective way to extend the life of your products. Shopping with the Mulberry extension and taking advantage of online resources to do you research can help you save money initially and down the road.
3. Good Housekeeping
Good Housekeeping offers more than just food and lifestyle information. While many people might be more familiar with the Good Housekeeping magazine, the Good Housekeeping Institute test thousands of home, beauty, tech, clothing, food and health products to find the best products for you and your family. You'll find product reviews on everything from appliances to mattresses to outdoor living spaces.
Good Housekeeping is based in New York City and takes the art of product reviews very seriously. With staff members from dozens of different disciplines including engineering, culinary, biology, and chemistry experts (and many others), the Good Housekeeping Institute spends each day thoroughly testing thousands of products in order to give you thorough, unbiased review.
4. Popular Mechanics
Popular Mechanics magazine is a publication that has been around for over 100 years, and along with its website has become a trusted source for countless consumers when it comes to product reviews. From technology to tools , you’ll find reliable, extensively-tested reviews that you can trust (as other consumers have since 1902!).
They also cover a wide range of products like fitness equipment , storage solutions, office furniture and kitchen appliances . There's even a Popular Mechanics for kids subscription, which provides lots of fun activities and games for children. If you choose to get a Popular Mechanics subscription, you’ll also enjoy a print copy of their publication, which they send out 6 times per year.
5. TechRadar
If you're looking for advice specifically on tech gear and equipment, that's what you'll find from TechRadar . This resource focuses on everything technology-related, with the goal of being your go-to source for tech-buying advice and everything else you need to buy and enjoy the tech you love.
They have a rigorous review-testing process, looking at long-term value as well. They update and maintain their reviews regularly so you can be sure you're getting up-to-date info, regardless of when a device was released. They say if you can still buy it, it's on their radar. Though they state that they may earn commission if you purchase products through their site, they are also clear that they do not accept payment for product reviews.
6. Honest Product Reviews
Although there’s a bold claim in the name itself, many consumers agree that Honest Product Reviews lives up to its name. From pet-related items to beauty products to electronics , Honest Product Reviews offers unbiased reviews, side-by-side comparisons, and a consumer-friendly format with minimal ads to make your research process a little less painful.
One important detail to note is that Honest Product Reviews does accept compensation from retailers whose products appear on their site. This means that if you choose to click on an Amazon link on their site, chances are they’ll get some kind of commission or receive a benefit in one way or another. While they still provide quality reviews, it is something to keep in the back of your mind.
Bonus resource: Fakespot
While Fakespot doesn't have a content-based website like the other six resources, it will alert you to the quality of a review as you're shopping on retailer websites like Amazon , Walmart , Sephora, eBay, and Best Buy .
When you install the Fakespot Chrome extension, it will provide you with an analysis of existing reviews on the retailer website, giving them an overall grade of A through F based on trustworthiness. You can also choose to further analyze the reviews for a specific product with the Fakespot analyzer.
Protect your purchases with Mulberry Unlimited
Although navigating the world of product reviews can be daunting, there are resources like these to make it less confusing, and more straightforward when it comes to product research.
Additionally, you can subscribe to Mulberry Unlimited to extend the life of your products and ensure that once you do find a quality product, you'll get the maximum value out of it with product protection .

The 31 Best Beauty Products Of The Year, According To Vogue ’s Beauty Team
Jessica Diner, European beauty & wellness director
I thought nothing could knock Beauty Pie’s Triple Hyaluronic Acid serum off the number one spot in my list of favourites from this brilliantly innovative and disruptive brand, but this year Youth Bomb changed all that. It’s a concentrated cocktail of peptides, proteins and super hydrators that promises to lift, tone and firm. But for me, it just makes my skin look and feel better . It’s more radiant, super luminous and more plump and happy. I use this in the morning and everything feels right with the world. It’s just that good.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley can do no wrong in my book. She of impeccable taste has hit the nail on the head with her make-up brand, and I use several of her products on a daily basis (looking at you Softlight Luminous Hydrating Concealer , Tinted Serum , Solar Radiance Hydrating Cream Highlighter ). But her line of blushers really steals the show. Each one is so nuanced and spot on in terms of tone, pigmentation and staying-power. The dusky pink Anemone shade in particular has captured my heart. Rose Inc forever.
£23, available at Spacenk.com .
There is not much to say about this bronzer, other than that if you don’t have it in your daily make-up arsenal, you’re making a huge mistake. Beloved by everyone on the Vogue beauty desk (Lauren Murdoch-Smith and I had to fight out which of us would get to include it in our top picks – sorry LMS!), it’s the best, most long-lasting formula, available in four suits-all-skin-tones shades, and is generally just perfection.
£46, available at Feelunique.com .
Not to be superficial, but this shampoo and its accompanying conditioner smell truly sublime. On hair wash days I will often eschew fragrance because I like to allow my hair’s scent to do the talking. But looking deeper than that, this formula has taken its cues from skincare and is enriched with hyaluronic acid and glycerin that work wonders to prevent colour from fading and stave off hair damage. Think lusciously shiny locks that smell like heaven.
£21.42, available at Lookfantastic.com .
I admit it: I am not on TikTok and I had to look up who Chriselle Lim was. Not only is she a star on the social platform, she is the owner and creative director of this fragrance brand and has been driving the insane online popularity of the collection. Beyond the TikTok hype, this is a fragrance brand with integrity, and Missing Person, in particular, with its notes of jasmine, neroli and sandalwood, smells of skin, but in the best possible way, and is utterly addictive. It’s a sultry everyday perfume that will literally have people stopping you in the street to ask what you are wearing.
£96, available at Selfridges.com .

Who could resist the chicest facial tool to launch this year? Not me. This magnetically closing two-in-one tool is the perfect size and shape to take out with you for on-the-go facial massage. The cooling metal tool separates into two – a triangle tip and a square tip. The triangle tip works on targeting lines and smoothing, whilst the other works to lift the jawline. It’s now a staple in my skincare edit.
£70, available at Chanel.com .
What’s better than spraying on your favourite perfume? Scenting your home with the same fragrance. Glossier’s signature perfume, You, is a Vogue editor favourite and now the candle, scented with the same delicious and cosy iris, woody ambrette and pink pepper notes promises to infuse your house with its distinctive warmth.
£37, available at Glossier.com .
The attachments on the Airwrap have had a few tweaks. Instead of multiple barrels that need changing depending on which direction you want your hair curled or waved in, you now simply turn the nozzle on top of the single barrel to dictate the direction. The rough dryer has also been redesigned to incorporate the smoothing attachment. Streamlined and still brilliant.
£499.99, available at Dyson.co.uk .
Adam Reed’s new hair care line has literally turned heads – including mine. The great value, luxurious and well performing range (which also smells incredible) launched with 11 products to suit all hair types. The Prologue hair primer is a favourite I use daily before drying my hair to protect and style, but there isn’t a single product from his collection that I don’t love.
From £10, available at Boots.com .
I love the Jones Road textures and concept, so when a balmy foundation launched this year I suspected I would fall in love… and I did. I find you only need to apply a small amount to give your skin a glowy, plump finish, and the base covers but doesn’t suffocate your skin. I love that it feels like a face cream – a great winter foundation to protect your skin from the cold.
£42, available at Jonesroadbeauty.com .
When Summer Fridays launch a new product, I know it’ll be an instant hit. Founders Lauren Gores Ireland and Marianna Hewitt always look to develop the products they want to use everyday, and this sunscreen is a great example. It’s lightweight and can be used daily without creating build-up. It also sits nicely under make-up, so there’s no excuse not to wear it religiously.
£35, available at Cultbeauty.co.uk .
Hannah Coates, beauty & wellness editor
As far as I’m concerned, all one can ever ask for in a cleanser is a formula that successfully removes make-up and cleans skin gently. This one goes further than that. Made with Japanese camellia oil and Hadesai-3 (a blend of the superfoods algae, green tea and a ferment from rice), you apply to dry skin, massage, add water and then rinse off, and I guarantee that every last trace of make-up, grime, you name it, will have vacated your face. In one cleanse! Oh, and it leaves skin feeling nourished. A dream cleanser that’s worth the money.
£45, available at Spacenk.com .
Whether you’re hungover, inexplicably hungry at 4pm or simply feeling under the weather, this satisfyingly-named supplement is your ticket to feeling that little bit better. A powder that you mix into water, it’s packed full of electrolytes, Peruvian maca and inulin, all of which helps to energise the microbiome, hydrate skin and cells, improve recovery and fend off stress. I can’t express how much of a game-changer this is for anyone up against it – which is most of us, right?
£32, available at Artah.co
If you’re looking for a longwear foundation that doesn’t cake, or get over-acquainted with lines and/or pores on the skin, then this is the formula for you. It won’t budge for love nor money, but also offers the right level of radiance and glow in order for it to look natural. I am quite obsessed.
£45, available at Chanel.com .
Creams come and they go, but Sarah Chapman’s Digital Rest is for life. Aside from the stellar name (I am forever in pursuit of digital rest in general), this blue-hued cream contains vitamin C and a retinoid-inspired ingredient called Lanablue which helps bolster the skin barrier, while other ingredients help rectify the effects of modern life. Not only is it the most gorgeous texture and really hydrating, but you’ll also quickly notice how luminous your skin looks.
£57, available at Lookfantastic.com .
I’ve waxed lyrical about these cream blushers this year – and for good reason. In one yellow-toned jelly palette, there are two blushers in different consistencies. One delivers a sheer, dewy flush, and the other a more intense, velvet-matte finish. I like to wear both at once for that just-out-of-the-cold glow.
£37, available at Selfridges.com .
I never thought I’d say this but I’m really quite taken with this mist, which has become a mainstay in my morning routine. Post-cleanse, I spritz it across my skin and press it in for its wondrous hydrating benefits – it contains four types of hyaluronic acid, plus rose water, ceramides and antioxidant-rich polyphenols for a strong skin barrier. I’m impressed!
£45, available at Johnlewis.com .
Twiggy Jalloh, beauty & wellness associate
As a vanilla super fan, I couldn’t wait to get Vanille Antique on my skin. I just hoped that it worked well with my natural scent, as I find some vanilla fragrances get it right on the sweetness, but lack depth and body when applied. An intoxicating combination of smooth musk, warming cashmere wood and sweet Madagascan vanilla, it sounded like my dream fragrance – the perfect mix of notes for a lover of earthy and sweet scents. It truly is everything I want in a fragrance. I initially went overboard with the sprays, then reminded myself of the price tag and stopped doing too much. It’s quite a heady one anyway, so a couple of sprays on pulse points is enough to last all day. A staple of mine this year, I simply can’t get enough of it.
£240, available at Spacenk.com .
I first heard of Ami Colé via Instagram, and I immediately trusted it because Dr Ewoma couldn’t get enough of the brand. Upon visiting the site for the first time, I soon learned why Black girls who love a clean girl aesthetic – with a little bit extra – love this brand so much. Ami Colé has all of the make-up items needed to create a flawless look, while taking the nuanced needs of Black girls and women into consideration. From delicious nude lip glosses that match perfectly, to skin tints made with rejuvenating and hydrating baobab seed extract to help with dullness. A favourite of mine? The Light-Catching Highlight. The illuminating stick slides effortlessly, giving skin a natural glow – perfect when I want to go make-up free but want to bring a little life to my face.
£20, available at Net-a-porter.com .
Doing just what it says on the tin, this Kem Beauty concealer glides smoothly onto skin like room-temperature butter. The coverage is immaculate and somehow manages to conceal age-spots, melasma, dark circles and hyperpigmentation without looking cakey. When I’m going for an everyday dewy natural finish, I apply it then use a setting spray to lock it in. When I go full glam, I simply set with a setting powder, like its Soft Set Airbrush-Finish Setting Powder. It lasts all day and night. The formula is simply genius.
£16, available at Shopkem.com .
In the colder months, my skin wants a moisturiser that feels nourishing upon application, lasts for hours, and gives a glow. The Yendy Super Shea Moisturiser has it all. The fatty acid-rich rosehip oil helps with skin elasticity as well as evening skin tone, whilst the hydrating hyaluronic acid helps to lock in moisture. It absorbs quite quickly, but the moisture remains. The brand’s philosophy is to bridge the gap between small-scale women producers of raw ingredients from Sub-Saharan African countries and the global natural beauty industry, which makes using Yendy products all the more gratifying. Its traceable products keep me in the loop on where they’re coming from. It’s now become one of my skincare favourites.
£26, available at Yendyskin.com .
I learned about the Fatigue Fix during a de Mamiel facial I had recently. Before I go on about the actual product itself, I should say the facial was one of the most relaxing I have ever had. The products used to hydrate and sculpt my skin smelt and felt absolutely divine. I took a picture of them at the end and saw that Fatigue Fix was in the mix. I’d heard great things about it already so wanted to try it for myself at home, and oh my, it was gorgeous. This is a product to be used mindfully: pump, massage in between palms, breathe in the light yet captivating aroma and massage, working outwards and upwards.
£95, available at Demamiel.com .

A great cleanser is the foundation of a good skincare routine. If your cleanser is off, everything that follows afterwards just isn’t as effective. But a great cleanser is not as omnipresent as one would think. Which is why I get excited when I discover one that does an amazing job. Like this one by U Beauty. The first time I used it , I was like, ‘What is this wizardry?!’. It is easily one of the very best cleansers I’ve used in a very long time. The texture is like liquid silk and it takes off make-up beautifully while also giving you the cleanest, deepest clean without disturbing the balance of the skin. You come away feeling like you’ve had a facial. Sublime.
£74, available at Net-a-porter.com .
I have never really had a signature scent, preferring to wear a coterie of fragrances. That said, I don’t add to the roster often. But I was instinctively drawn to Raving Rose and so it now holds pride of place in my fragrance wardrobe. It is a floral – which I normally don’t go for – but the edgy black pepper and musk give it that slightly off the beaten path finish you can’t quite put your finger on. Which is exactly what Dries does so well.
£195, available at Driesvannoten.com .
Excellent beauty products can be split into two camps. The ones that work like an undercover agent – where it takes a while to see results but you know it’s working – and those that give you what looks like a new face overnight. This excellent texture smoothing serum – which also combats dark spots and fine lines – sits firmly in the latter.
£49, available at Boots.com .
There are a lot of products out there that claim to be for textured hair. The reality however is that most of these products still do not consider those with really dense curl patterns, a texture generally referred to as 4c. Thankfully, this styling creme by Tracee Ellis Ross’s brand Pattern does. It is genuinely inclusive, provides a deep level of hydration without leaving the hair heavy, makes your natural curls pop and it smells delicious.
£25, available at Boots.com .
Chanel’s complexion products are game changing (I’ve long been devotee of the Ultra Le Teint Fluid Ultrawear All-Day Comfort Flawless Finish foundation, and the Sublimage foundation is like haute couture for your skin). So when its launched this concealer earlier this year, I knew it would be good. And it is so good. Creamy, hydrating and offering great buildable coverage, it leaves you with a skin-like finish and comes with a super chic brush. It’s everything you want in a concealer.
£85, available at Selfridges.com .
Kathleen Baird-Murray, contributing beauty & wellness editor
I tried these because Venn is one of those best-kept-secret sort of brands, but I wasn’t hoping for much as I don’t tend to like sheet masks. Surprise! This hydrogel mask uses collagen derived from fish skin, and bakuchiol, with plenty of hyaluronic acid. It’s incredible: my skin felt and looked smoother, and it didn’t exacerbate my red, sensitive cheeks. The only way it could be improved upon would be to make it vegan, but it is cruelty-free, and the sheets are biodegradable in water when you’ve finished with them.
£44, available at Harveynichols.com .
This stuff is amazing. If I don’t get in to see my hairdresser for regular trims, my long ends quickly start to look witchy. Using this weekly strengthening treatment on them regularly stops the split ends I do have from getting worse, and helps prevent new ones from recurring, to the point where even my hairdresser thought the condition had improved.
£19, available at Lookfantastic.com .
I love Ostens for its gentle mouth-blown glass candle jars, which are so elegant they’re impossible to throw away afterwards, and its hand-poured scented wax, which in the case of the jasmine one, smells just like sitting outside on a warm evening, near thick, verdant night jasmine.
£65, available at Ostens.com .
Fun, fun, fun… a home lipstick printer delivering a lipstick to suit your every whim, or to match your favourite dress, shoes, nail colour – you name it.
£260, available at Yslbeauty.co.uk .

Founding Consumers Reports
Striking workers formed Consumers Union, now known as Consumer Reports. CR was created as an independent, nonprofit organization, using testing, reporting, and advocacy to counter marketplace misinformation and advance consumer protections
Guiding Consumers in Wartime
When the U.S. went to war in 1941, manufacturers focused on war production. Many consumers had to ration to make ends meet. To help people make smart decisions with limited funds, CR published a weekly newsletter, “Bread & Butter.”
Exposing Nuclear Fallout in Food
CR launched the first large-scale investigation of consumer exposure to fallout from nuclear weapons testing in food, analyzing the amount of Strontium-90 in milk. As a result, the federal government expanded its monitoring of nuclear fallout.
Surgeon General’s Landmark Report on Smoking
For a decade, CR conducted independent testing and research to highlight the dangers of cigarettes. The Surgeon General’s Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health used CR’s work to draft its landmark report.
U.S. Government Mandates Seat Belts
CR’s tests showed two-thirds of seat belts failed basic safety and durability tests, leading CR to call for better belts and for federal standards that incorporated crash testing. The government later mandated them.
Fighting for Safer Drinking Water
CR published a landmark three-part series on the safety of the United States water supply, which played a key role in encouraging Congress to pass the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Setting New Standards for Child Safety Seats
When CR first crash-tested car seats, 12 out of 15 were rated Not Acceptable. After CR published its findings, the government required manufacturers to certify that their seats would pass a similar test.
Exposing the Dangers of Pesticides
In a study of U.S. Department of Agriculture data, CR found pesticide levels in some fruits and vegetables were too high. Shortly after, one of the pesticides was banned for use on food crops commonly consumed by children.
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Created
CR helped to mobilize support in Congress to create the CFPB, an independent agency responsible for overseeing the financial industry with powers to police abusive practices and to enact new consumer protections.
Bisphenol-A Banned in Baby Products
CR was one of the first groups to test food packaging for BPA. After working to pass bans in several states, the FDA finally announced a federal ban on BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups (2012) and infant formula packaging (2013).
A Win on Backup Cameras
After years of CR’s advocating for standards to address the problem of blind zones behind cars and trucks, the Department of Transportation finally required backup cameras in all vehicles less than 10,000 pounds by 2018.
Advancing Laws to Protect Consumer Privacy
The California Consumer Privacy Act provided key individual privacy rights, such as the right to stop the sale of personal info. CR fought efforts to weaken the legislation, mobilizing CR members to call on legislators to enact privacy protections.
Advancing and Protecting Digital Consumer Rights
CR launched the Digital Lab—a bold initiative to advance and protect consumer rights in the digital era by focusing on testing connected products and platforms for hackability, digital privacy, and how responsibly our data is handled.
Fighting Hidden Cable Fees
CR testified before Congress about cable TV fees, following years of advocacy and research. Thousands of CR members contacted lawmakers, and Congress passed a law requiring providers to disclose the total price of service before a consumer signs up.
Protecting Kids & Infants From Dangerous Products
CR’s investigation into the safety of infant inclined sleepers linked to dozens of deaths led to the recall of over 5 million sleepers. Following CR’s outreach, several retailers and online marketplaces said they would stop selling the sleepers.
Navigating the Pandemic
Millions turned to CR for free articles about staying safe and avoiding misinformation as COVID-19 spread. CR advocated for relief measures in Congress to help people stay in their homes, stay online, and avoid surprise medical bills.
Helping Student Borrowers, Stopping Scams
California approved a landmark law championed by CR to provide student loan borrowers the nation’s strongest protections against loan-servicing abuses. The state also created a watchdog to crack down on financial fraud and predatory lending.
Raising Standards for Infant Safety
CR helped pass a landmark national rule to establish strong minimum safety standards for infant sleep products for the very first time.
Making the Green Choice
CR launched the Green Choice rating to help people identify the most environmentally friendly cars, washers, and other products. CR also helped get new greenhouse gas rules for vehicles to reduce emissions and help consumers save money on fuel.
STURDY Act Takes Effect
A landmark law championed by CR requires dressers to meet stability standards to prevent deadly furniture tip-overs.

The best hair glosses for a healthy-looking shine, tried and tested
Looking to refresh coloured hair or give natural locks a little extra lustre?
When it comes to our beauty routines right now, it’s a case of the glossier, the better. From the quiet luxury of a slicked-back bun to healthy, dewy skin, it’s all about that expensive-looking sheen.
But how do you get high-shine red carpet-ready locks when you don’t have an A-list budget? That’s where hair glosses come in – these treatments can help revive colour and add extra lustre at home in between salon appointments.
To help you find the right one for your hair, we spoke to the experts and put the best products on the market to the test at the Good Housekeeping Institute . These are our top-rated glosses at a glance but scroll on to find out more about these shiny new hair treatments.

Glaze colour conditioning treatment, what is a hair gloss.
Think of them like a lip gloss for your hair. “The aim of a hair gloss is to add shine,” says Anabel Kingsley , brand president and trichologist at Philip Kingsley. “There are many different types and formulations, but most are used as a treatment during the wash process vs. a post-wash styling serum.
“A traditional hair gloss is typically an in-salon treatment that acts as a colour glaze to improve colour vibrancy and add high-shine. However, at-home formulations now promise salon-worthy results, with ingredients that boost radiance and smooth for reflective glossy shine.” They can be clear or tinted.
Can you use a hair gloss instead of hair dye?
Yes, you can. But bear in mind that a hair gloss isn’t permanent and while it can help tone and condition hair, it won’t lighten it or completely change the colour like a dye can. Glosses are more about fine-tuning your shade.
“Hair glosses are semi-permanent or demi-permanent, meaning they don’t penetrate the hair in the same way a dye would. They’re a temporary treatment that washes out after anywhere between 12-24 washes, depending on the formula, your hair porosity and condition,” explains Taylor Taylor colour director Sian Wood.
Are hair glosses damaging?
Unlike regular hair dyes, pigmented hair glosses don’t contain any active peroxide, so won’t damage the hair. In fact, both clear and coloured glosses have conditioning properties that can help repair dull and damaged hair.
As it’s a non-invasive, conditioning treatment, hair stylist Michael Douglas says you can use them as often as you like, but he recommends saving it until “your hair starts to look dull.”
Are hair glosses suitable for all hair types?
“Yes, they are suitable for all hair types,” says Douglas. “They’re particularly good on curly hair, which absorbs the light, making it difficult to achieve a glossy finish. A hair gloss or glaze is a great way to get it to shine.”
How to use a hair gloss
Always follow the instructions on the packaging. However, as a guide, you should apply the treatment to pre-shampooed hair, just as you would a conditioner. Then leave on for between 10-20 minutes, depending on the intensity of colour you are trying to achieve. Once rinsed out, you should be left with refreshed glossy locks.
How we test
We put a range of market-leading hair glosses to the test over a four-week period with the help of over 130 panel members.
We asked them to give feedback on a range of areas, including ease of use, design and performance, telling us whether it made any difference to their hair colour, shine and softness, and whether the product left any residue.
Score: 88/100
Glycolic acid is known for its hydrating benefits in skincare, and it does a similar job in this hair gloss. It penetrates deep into hair cuticles to improve shine, while also working to seal and strengthen strands.
Our testers were impressed with this speedy hair gloss treatment. After leaving it on for just five minutes (the perfect opportunity to squeeze in a leg shave), it delivers super glossy and hydrated hair, according to our panel. In fact, one tester said their hair felt softer immediately after application.
Another praised the “lovely fragrance that stays even once dry.” In other words, this is a triple threat – it leaves your hair looking good, feeling good and smelling good.
If you're looking for a quick refresh between salon visits, or a temporary change, then Wella’s colour mask is a great place to start. It combines both conditioning care with semi-permanent colour, meaning you can top up your tone and add gloss at the same time. Our panel liked how it left their hair feeling “vibrant and shiny”, without any tackiness or residue.
As with all pigmented products, we'd recommend being careful around the hairline and using gloves for application to avoid any unwanted staining. With 13 assorted colours to try (at an affordable price point too), Wella has covered all bases here, from toning and adding depth to natural shades to ensuring your pink stays popping.
Score: 84/100
This newly developed hair gloss from TRESemmé impressed our panel, leaving their hair less frizzy, and feeling soft for days.
It uses TRESemmé’s patented Lamella Technology, which essentially wraps each strand of hair in a ceramide- and amino acid-rich formulation, for smooth, silky hair. This also helps keep locks tangle-free and allows for maximum light-reflection, creating extra shine from roots to ends.
This is a leave-in option, so you can skip the rinsing required with many other hair glosses. Simply apply three pumps after your shampoo and conditioner and wait for the magic to happen.
Score: 82/100
To keep the bombshell in your blonde for as long as possible, look no further than Davines’ Heart of Glass gloss. When you take the bleach route, it’s easy for hair to appear dull and dry, but this serum is designed to leave your coloured locks glossy and fresh.
Featuring a formula enriched with biacidic bond complex and illuminating amino concentrate, it promises to strengthen and repair hair fibres, leaving your hair extra shiny. It also contains UV protection, combatting any risk of dull, yellow tones from exposure to sunlight, and instead helps prolong colour intensity and brightness.
Not only did our panel praise this luxurious product for adding gloss and shine to their locks, but they found it also helped tame frizz, and left hair feeling “stronger and renewed.” The easy-to-apply treatment can be used in every wash to achieve a fresh-from-the salon look and feel.
Score: 80/100
Hydrated, healthy hair with a glossy mirror shine is something we all want, and luckily for us R+Co has bottled it. Its gemstone gloss can be used in the place of conditioner once a week, and the rich creme will work to hydrate and seal cuticles, leaving your hair with a beautiful reflective shine that’s UV protected.
One tester loved how “full and bouncy” the treatment left their locks, while another noted how it “brought out the highlights.” A few testers did note that the serum left their strands feeling slightly heavy, which may not be ideal for those with finer hair. However, most of the panel agreed that their hair looked glossier and shinier after use.
Colour WOW Pop & Lock serum
Score: 78/100
Promising to smooth flyaways, seal split ends and prevent colour fading, this Colour WOW Pop & Lock serum is a friend to frizzy hair. The brand set out to create a product that combines the conditioning benefits of an oil and the shine-enhancing power of a serum, and it seems to have succeeded, based on the positive feedback received from our testers.
They said it helped control frizz and smoothed any escaping strands – with one panel member noting how it passed the weather test, as their hair stayed sleek even on a rainy, windy day.
Not only is this product suitable for vegans, but it’s also free from any harmful parabens and sulphates. However, if your hair is on the finer side, you may want to consider an alternative product (such as the Aveda Colour Renewal treatment below), as our testers with thinner hair did notice a slight sticky residue after use.
Score: 77/100
This clever gloss uses science to put the shine back into your strands. The formula contains citric acid, which works to restore the hair’s optimum pH levels (between 4.5-5.5 according to the brand). Cuticles are also wrapped in a blend of enriching amino acids and conditioners, with one tester saying it left their hair “soft, manageable and with less flyaways.”
Apply the treatment to wet hair, working from mid-lengths to ends and leave on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing out. Some testers found this extra step in their haircare routine a little inconvenient, but it’s standard procedure for hair glosses. And hopefully the extra shine is worth it.
Though suited to all hair types, our testers with thinner hair were particularly pleased with this Aveda gloss. They praised its non-greasy formulation, which didn’t weigh hair down, making it “perfect for fine hair.” Ingredients include fruit oils and shea butter, both key for intense conditioning and shine enhancing.
It also boasts colour renewal for both natural and dyed hair. You can choose between cool and warm tones in either blonde or brown, which our panel said were “very pigmented.” This may suit those looking for a richer colour, but perhaps not one for those wanting a more subtle refresh.
Not only will this gloss make your hair look fresh and feel silkier, but our testers also praised the “divine scent”, which gave them that salon-fresh feel.
Score: 76/100
All colour treated hair could do with some extra TLC from time to time, and this is exactly what Kerastase had in mind when it created the Chroma Absolu gloss. This high-shine treatment is enriched with three acids (amino, tartaric, and lactic) that wrap around hair fibres to seal cuticles and lock in colour vibrancy.
The nozzled tip makes it easy for an all-over application, but due to the liquid consistency you’ll need to take care not to spill it. Testers found it made their hair instantly smoother, easy to comb and noticeably shinier – especially for one tester who said it transformed their “lacklustre” bleached hair.
Score: 75/100
This is another tinted gloss, but this one can be applied to dry or damp hair, which adds a layer of convenience. Acting as a conditioning mask, it promises to deliver a layer of shine – or a glazed effect – as well as a colour refresh. This was the case for one of our testers who applauded how it left hair looking “glossier and vibrant.” Another praised its “pleasant scent”, which was an added bonus.
However, although our testers agreed this gloss was easy to incorporate into their routines, many said the packaging made it tricky to dispense. That said, it’s what’s inside that counts, right?
Josh Wood Colour Hair Gloss
Score: 74/100
From peach blush to chestnut brunette, these pigmented glosses by Josh Wood promise to not only to add a layer of shine and deep conditioning to your hair, but also refresh colour with a semi-permanent, tinted finish. Weaker than a hair dye, but as one tester noted, still enough to add a “subtle glow and lift,” they are a great option between salon trips. Due to the pigment, however, we’d advise wearing a pair of gloves to apply.
“Glossy” was a word used to describe the product by multiple testers, which is thanks to the shea butter and pequi oil included to keep hair healthy. Another tester commented that their hair felt “smoother, softer and shinier” after use – the holy trinity when it comes to hair. What more could you want from an at-home treatment?

PRESS RELEASE
Featuring a new thin and light design, breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display, and outrageously fast M4 performance with powerful AI capabilities, the new iPad Pro takes a huge leap forward
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today unveiled the groundbreaking new iPad Pro in a stunningly thin and light design, taking portability and performance to the next level. Available in silver and space black finishes, the new iPad Pro comes in two sizes: an expansive 13-inch model and a super-portable 11-inch model. Both sizes feature the world’s most advanced display — a new breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display with state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology — providing a remarkable visual experience. The new iPad Pro is made possible with the new M4 chip, the next generation of Apple silicon, which delivers a huge leap in performance and capabilities. M4 features an entirely new display engine to enable the precision, color, and brightness of the Ultra Retina XDR display. With a new CPU, a next-generation GPU that builds upon the GPU architecture debuted on M3, and the most powerful Neural Engine yet, the new iPad Pro is an outrageously powerful device for artificial intelligence. The versatility and advanced capabilities of iPad Pro are also enhanced with all-new accessories. Apple Pencil Pro brings powerful new interactions that take the pencil experience even further, and a new thinner, lighter Magic Keyboard is packed with incredible features. The new iPad Pro, Apple Pencil Pro, and Magic Keyboard are available to order starting today, with availability in stores beginning Wednesday, May 15.
“iPad Pro empowers a broad set of pros and is perfect for anyone who wants the ultimate iPad experience — with its combination of the world’s best displays, extraordinary performance of our latest M-series chips, and advanced accessories — all in a portable design. Today, we’re taking it even further with the new, stunningly thin and light iPad Pro, our biggest update ever to iPad Pro,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “With the breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display, the next-level performance of M4, incredible AI capabilities, and support for the all-new Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard, there’s no device like the new iPad Pro.”
The new iPad Pro — the thinnest Apple product ever — features a stunningly thin and light design, taking portability to a whole new level. The 11-inch model is just 5.3 mm thin, and the 13-inch model is even thinner at a striking 5.1 mm, while both models are just as strong as the previous design. The 11-inch model weighs less than a pound, and the 13-inch model is nearly a quarter pound lighter than its predecessor — allowing pro users to extend their workflows in new ways and in more places. The new iPad Pro is available in two gorgeous finishes — silver and space black — both with 100 percent recycled aluminum enclosures.
The new iPad Pro debuts the Ultra Retina XDR, the world’s most advanced display, to provide an even more remarkable visual experience. The Ultra Retina XDR display features state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology that uses two OLED panels and combines the light from both to provide phenomenal full-screen brightness. The new iPad Pro supports an incredible 1000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, and 1600 nits peak for HDR. No other device of its kind delivers this level of extreme dynamic range. Tandem OLED technology enables sub-millisecond control over the color and luminance of each pixel, taking XDR precision further than ever. Specular highlights in photos and video appear even brighter, and there’s more detail in shadows and low light than ever before on iPad — all while delivering even more responsiveness to content in motion. For pro users working in high-end, color-managed workflows or challenging lighting conditions, a new nano-texture glass option comes to iPad Pro for the first time. 1 Nano-texture glass is precisely etched at a nanometer scale, maintaining image quality and contrast while scattering ambient light for reduced glare. With its breakthrough tandem OLED technology, extreme brightness, incredibly precise contrast, brilliant colors, and nano-texture glass option, the new Ultra Retina XDR display is the world’s most advanced display, giving iPad Pro customers an unparalleled viewing experience.
The incredibly thin and light design and game-changing display of the new iPad Pro is only possible with M4, the next generation of Apple silicon that delivers a huge leap in performance. M4 is built on second-generation 3-nanometer technology that’s even more power efficient, which is perfect for the design of the new iPad Pro. With an entirely new display engine, M4 introduces pioneering technology for the stunning precision, color, and brightness of the Ultra Retina XDR display. The new CPU offers up to four performance cores and now six efficiency cores, 2 with next-generation machine learning (ML) accelerators, to deliver up to 1.5x faster CPU performance over M2 in the previous-generation iPad Pro. 3 M4 builds on the GPU architecture of M3 — the 10-core GPU includes powerful features like Dynamic Caching, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing, which come to iPad for the first time. Coupled with higher unified memory bandwidth, pro rendering apps like Octane will see up to 4x faster performance than M2. 3 M4 also delivers tremendous gains and industry-leading performance per watt. Compared to M2, M4 can deliver the same performance using just half the power, and compared to the latest PC chip in a thin and light laptop, M4 can deliver the same performance using just a quarter of the power. 4 A new advanced Media Engine includes support for AV1 decode, providing more power-efficient playback of high-resolution video experiences from streaming services.
The new iPad Pro with M4 features Apple’s most powerful Neural Engine ever, capable of 38 trillion operations per second, which is 60x faster than Apple’s first Neural Engine in the A11 Bionic chip. Combined with next-generation ML accelerators in the CPU, a high-performance GPU, more memory bandwidth, and intelligent features and powerful developer frameworks in iPadOS, the Neural Engine makes the new iPad Pro an outrageously powerful device for AI. With iPad Pro with M4, users can perform AI-enabled tasks even faster, like easily isolate a subject from its background in 4K video with just a tap with Scene Removal Mask in Final Cut Pro. With this advanced level of performance, the Neural Engine in M4 is more powerful than any neural processing unit in any AI PC today.
iPadOS also has advanced frameworks like Core ML that make it easy for developers to tap into the Neural Engine to deliver phenomenal AI features locally, including running powerful diffusion and generative AI models, with great performance on device. iPad Pro also supports cloud-based solutions, enabling users to run powerful productivity and creative apps that tap into the power of AI, such as Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Adobe Firefly.
The updated camera system on the new iPad Pro delivers even more versatility, and with its rich audio from four studio-quality mics, users can shoot, edit, and share all on one device. The 12MP back camera captures vibrant Smart HDR images and video with even better color, improved textures, and detail in low light. It also now features a new adaptive True Tone flash that makes document scanning on the new iPad Pro better than ever. Using AI, the new iPad Pro automatically identifies documents right in the Camera app, and if a shadow is in the way, it instantly takes multiple photos with the new adaptive flash, stitching the scan together for a dramatically better scan.
On the front, the TrueDepth camera system moves to the landscape location on the new iPad Pro. The Ultra Wide 12MP camera with Center Stage makes the experience of video conferencing in landscape orientation even better, especially when iPad is attached to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Folio.
iPad Pro includes a high-performance USB-C connector with support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4, delivering fast wired connectivity — up to 40Gb/s. Thunderbolt supports an extensive ecosystem of high-performance accessories, including external displays like the Pro Display XDR at its full 6K resolution, and external storage, all connected using high-performance cables and docks. iPad Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E for super-fast Wi-Fi connections for pro workflows on the go. Wi-Fi + Cellular models with 5G allow users to access their files, communicate with colleagues, and back up their data in a snap while on the go. Cellular models of the new iPad Pro are activated with eSIM, a more secure alternative to a physical SIM card, allowing users to quickly connect and transfer their existing plans digitally, and store multiple cellular plans on a single device. Customers can easily get connected to wireless data plans on the new iPad Pro in over 190 countries and regions around the world without needing to get a physical SIM card from a local carrier.
Apple Pencil Pro features even more magical capabilities and powerful new interactions that take the Apple Pencil experience even further. A new sensor in the barrel can sense a user’s squeeze, bringing up a tool palette to quickly switch tools, line weights, and colors, all without interrupting the creative process. A custom haptic engine delivers a light tap that provides confirmation when users squeeze, use double-tap, or snap to a Smart Shape for a remarkably intuitive experience. A gyroscope allows users to roll Apple Pencil Pro for precise control of the tool they’re using. Rotating the barrel changes the orientation of shaped pen and brush tools, just like pen and paper. And with Apple Pencil hover, users can visualize the exact orientation of a tool before making a mark.
With these advanced features, Apple Pencil Pro allows users to bring their ideas to life in entirely new ways, and developers can also create their own custom interactions. Apple Pencil Pro brings support for Find My for the first time to Apple Pencil, helping users locate Apple Pencil Pro if misplaced. It pairs, charges, and is stored on the side of iPad Pro through a new magnetic interface. iPad Pro also supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), ideal for note taking, sketching, annotating, journaling, and more, at an incredible value.
Designed for the new iPad Pro, an all-new thinner and lighter Magic Keyboard makes it more portable and versatile than ever. The new Magic Keyboard opens to the magical floating design that customers love, and now includes a function row for access to features like screen brightness and volume controls. It also has a gorgeous aluminum palm rest and larger trackpad that’s even more responsive with haptic feedback, so the entire experience feels just like using a MacBook. The new Magic Keyboard attaches magnetically, and the Smart Connector immediately connects power and data without the need for Bluetooth. The machined aluminum hinge also includes a USB-C connector for charging. The new Magic Keyboard comes in two colors that perfectly complement the new iPad Pro: black with a space black aluminum palm rest, and white with a silver aluminum palm rest.
The new Smart Folio for iPad Pro attaches magnetically and now supports multiple viewing angles for greater flexibility. Available in black, white, and denim, it complements the colors of the new iPad Pro.
iPadOS is packed with features that push the boundaries of what’s possible on iPad. With Reference Mode, iPadOS can precisely match color requirements of the Ultra Retina XDR display for tasks in which accurate colors and consistent image quality are critical — including review and approve, color grading, and compositing. Stage Manager enables users to work with multiple overlapping windows in a single view, resize windows, tap to switch between apps, and more. With full external display support of up to 6K, iPad Pro users can also extend their workflow, as well as use the built-in camera on an external display for enhanced video conferencing. Users can take advantage of the powerful AI capabilities in iPad Pro and intelligent features in iPadOS, including Visual Look Up, Subject Lift, Live Text, or Live Captions and Personal Voice for accessibility.
With iPadOS 17 , users can customize the Lock Screen to make it more personal — taking advantage of the larger display on iPad — and interactive widgets take glanceable information further with the ability to get tasks done right in the moment with just a tap. The Notes app gives users new ways to organize, read, annotate, and collaborate on PDFs, and working with PDFs is also easier with AutoFill, which intelligently identifies and fills fields in forms.
Logic Pro for iPad 2 , available starting Monday, May 13, introduces incredible studio assistant features that augment the music-making process and provide artists help right when they need it — all while ensuring they maintain full creative control. These features include Session Players, which expand on popular Drummer capabilities in Logic to include a new Bass Player and Keyboard Player; ChromaGlow, to instantly add warmth to tracks; and Stem Splitter, to extract and work with individual parts of a single audio recording.
Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 , available later this spring, introduces Live Multicam, a new feature that transforms iPad into a mobile production studio, allowing users to view and control up to four connected iPhone and iPad devices wirelessly. 5 To support Live Multicam, an all-new capture app also comes to iPad and iPhone, Final Cut Camera, 6 giving users control over options like white balance, ISO, and shutter speed, along with monitoring tools like overexposure indicators and focus peaking. Final Cut Camera works as a standalone capture app or with Live Multicam. Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 also allows users to create or open projects from external storage, giving editors even more flexibility, and offers new content options. 7
The new iPad Pro is designed with the environment in mind, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 percent recycled gold plating and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. The new iPad Pro meets Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency, and is free of mercury, brominated flame retardants, and PVC. The packaging is 100 percent fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal to remove plastic from all packaging by 2025.
Today, Apple is carbon neutral for global corporate operations, and by 2030, plans to be carbon neutral across the entire manufacturing supply chain and life cycle of every product.
