Internal funding searches

The best collated source of internal funding opportunities for Cambridge students is the Student Funding Search

Before applying for scholarships, read the eligibility criteria thoroughly and make sure you submit your application by the correct deadline. It is important to note that most fully funded opportunities at Cambridge are only available to students about to start a new course. Once you are registered as a student, there are few full scholarships available.

Please see the Financial Support pages on the Undergraduate Study website

Postgraduate students

There are many funding opportunities at Cambridge for prospective postgraduate students, from a wide variety of sources including the Cambridge Trust , Gates Cambridge , Colleges, Departments, Research Councils and central University funds. Information can be found on the pages below:

  • Student Funding Search
  • Postgraduate Admissions webpages

Please note that postgraduate Students are expected to have their finances in place before they start their course, and will have provided a financial undertaking to confirm this. Therefore most funding opportunities at Cambridge are only available to applicants who are about to start a new course. However, small part-cost bursaries may be available to current postgraduate students from colleges and departments for fieldwork, hardship and conferences etc...

External funding

Many hundreds of charities make awards to current and prospective postgraduate students.  However, they can be hard to find and may require a specific and specialized approach.

A useful source of information for exploring funding opportunities from charities and voluntary organisations is the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding. This is an external resource published independently by Gradfunding .  This award winning guide is written by two UK based PhD students who, between them, won over £50,000 from 50 different charity awards.  It provides a database of alternative funding opportunities from charities and trusts and gives advice about how to apply to them, including, model personal and financial statements.  The University has subscribed to the Guide, which can be accessed free of charge.

Current Cambridge staff and students - use your University email address to register online

Applicants who do not yet have a University email account - email [email protected] to receive a pin which will enable you to access the Guide.

ELCAS - Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Services is the MOD's Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme which promotes lifelong learning amongst members of the Armed Forces. Funding is available to both current members and those that have left the Armed Forces.

Please review the ELCAS website for accredited courses; new courses are not being added for the time being.

All students admitted to Cambridge Judge Business School’s PhD programme receive 3 years of full funding (including University fees and a maintenance stipend) as well as a 4th year of funding that is conditional on progress.

In addition, all students who enter the PhD via the MRes route will also receive full funding for their MRes year.

Applying for a PhD

The usual route to a Cambridge Judge Business School PhD is via one of our 3 research MPhils, via our Master of Research (MRes), or in exceptional cases via a Cambridge MPhil in Economic Research.

Learn how to apply

How the PhD funding works

PhD and MRes applicants must apply for any and all funding for which they are eligible. This includes funding from the Cambridge Trust, College funding, Gates Cambridge Scholarships and any external sources of funding. At the point of the PhD or MRes admission offer (February), some eligible applicants will be awarded an ESRC scholarship.

Covering any shortfall in funding

With all offers, we guarantee that any shortfall in funding from the University or other sources will be covered by a Cambridge scholarship.

In addition to making up the shortfall, the Business School also increases the maintenance stipend for all PhD students to the level of a research council stipend (for the 2023/24 academic year, this is expected to be £18,622 per annum). We also award bursaries over and above the value of the maintenance stipend in the form of:

  • Cambridge Judge Director’s Scholarships, which are awarded to the best applicants and are worth £1,000 per annum for 3 years.
  • Research bursaries for students who successfully secure external funding, worth £500 per annum for 3 years.

Supplement your maintenance funding

You may supplement your maintenance funding by doing paid work within the department (eg supervision and teaching assistance). Some students may be offered work as research assistants with a supervisor for the period between the MPhil and PhD programmes or for short periods in the summer.

Funding for the 4th year of the PhD

In the 4th year of the PhD programme, no fees are payable, and we offer full maintenance funding to all students who have received a ‘revise and resubmit’ invitation from a top-tier journal in their placement discipline or can demonstrate equivalent progress towards placement at a top university. Other sources of funding for the 4th year include research and teaching assistantships.

ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership

Cambridge Judge participates in an ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) at the University of Cambridge. A range of studentships are available across the social sciences at Cambridge. If you are interested in how society works and how it can handle global challenges, an ESRC DTP studentship will give you a world-class training programme, with access to leading international scholars both at Cambridge and other DTPs, and a wide community of fellow social scientists.

Each year the programme obtains a number of ESRC Doctoral Training Centre scholarships (3 years or one+3 years). If you are a PhD applicant, you will be automatically considered for one of these (along with applicants to the MPhil Strategy, Marketing & Operations and MPhil Innovation, Strategy & Organisation programmes) by submitting your online application before the funding deadline and ticking the “Apply for Cambridge Scholarships” box. Home and EU applicants are eligible.

Please refer to the Cambridge  ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Social Sciences  for more information about benefits for DTC students.

Cambridge Trusts funds

There are many Trust funds within the University (known as “the Cambridge Trusts”, and including Gates scholarships) that provide funding for PhD and MPhil students. Most of these scholarships are only available to students at the start of their programme.

To be automatically considered for most scholarships for which you are eligible, you must submit your application form by the funding deadline, stating ‘yes’ in the Funding section of the form.

There are a small number of Cambridge Trust scholarships which require a separate application .

Other Cambridge funding

Take a look at the  Cambridge Funding Search database , which contains details of awards available from all departments, faculties, colleges, central offices and other internal sponsors. CJBS is listed under ‘Technology’. Some of these schemes require a funding application in addition to the graduate application form.

Many Cambridge colleges offer scholarships, bursaries, hardship funding and prizes. Of particular note is the  Benavitch Scholarship ; thanks to a generous bequest from the late Maurice and Natalie Benavitch, St Catharine’s College offers this scholarship for outstanding PhD candidates in Management. The value of the scholarship is £10,000 per annum for the 3 years of the PhD programme.

External funding

Several organisations fund students to undertake PhD and MPhil programmes. We recommend looking at the list of  external scholarships relevant to our MPhil programmes , some of which may be relevant. Please note these scholarships are not administered by Cambridge Judge Business School, so please follow the links direct to the organisations’ websites for more information and contact the organisations directly if you have any questions.

Explanation of fees at Cambridge

Postgraduate students at Cambridge are expected to meet the following costs:

  • The University Composition Fee, which covers the teaching and supervision you will receive from Cambridge Judge Business School as well as College membership. This is payable for 9 months of the masters and for 3 years of your PhD; in the PhD 4th year, no fees are payable.
  • Maintenance, which is an estimate of your likely basic living expenses and personal costs, including accommodation. The University sets a minimum annual maintenance figure. You must have this sum available in order to cover your living expenses for 9 months of the masters and in years one to 4 of the PhD programme.

These costs vary depending on whether you are a Home/EU or international student.  Visit the Postgraduate Admissions website to find out more .

In years 2 to 4 of the PhD programme you should be prepared for maintenance costs to increase, reflecting rising inflation (note that fees are not applicable in your 4th year).

  • PhD Funding

There are many funding opportunities at Cambridge from a wide variety of sources including the Cambridge Trust, Gates Cambridge, Colleges, Research Councils, and central University funds. Competition for funding is extremely high so we strongly advise that applicants apply for as many funding opportunities as possible.

The Postgraduate Admissions Office publishes details of the University’s central funding competitions for postgraduate students, which includes information about how to apply, deadlines, and other useful information.

Central University competitions include the following sources:

  • Gates (US & International Competitions)
  • Cambridge Trust

There are two main funding deadlines to consider:

  • 12 October 2022 : deadline for Gates US funding (for US citizens resident in the US)
  • 5 January 2023 : deadline for all other central funding competitions

We recommend that applicants prepare their supporting documentation and apply well in advance of the final deadlines, as no exceptions can be made for those who miss their deadline.

Even if you are not seeking funding, we strongly recommend that you submit your application before the deadline for central competitions, as the course can fill up and applications will no longer be accepted once the programme is full. If places are still available beyond this deadline, self-funded applicants will continue to be considered until the final deadline of 16 May 2023 .

Please note that funding from Cambridge is highly competitive and therefore students are also advised to do their own research on other funding sources including the Colleges.

Applying for funding is a key part of the application process. Watch the film above for a quick guide.

Anyone who applies for a postgraduate course at Cambridge can also apply to be considered for funding to help cover their fees and costs .

Students can be fully, partially or self-funded and there are several ways to find funds through the University and from external sources (see box below).

PDF icon

The main way to find funding is via the University's Postgraduate Funding Search , which contains:

  • University funding opportunities
  • Funded studentships and research projects
  • Research Council (UKRI) studentships

A lot of our students also fund their studies from external funding sources such as charities or government schemes and loans.

Start your search

1. Research early -  Start researching funding opportunities at least a year before your course begins.

2. Apply early -  Many scholarship deadlines are in early December and January for admission in October the following year. If your course starts in January (Lent Term) or April (Easter Term) you may need to apply for funding 18 months in advance.

3. Get funding or arrange finances before you start studying -  Without proof of finances you will not be able to study at the University. Do not expect to be able to find funding after your course starts.

4. Apply to every funding opportunity you can -  Applying to several funding opportunities will not negatively impact your funding applications. We want you to apply to every funding opportunity possible.

Read our guidance on How to apply for funding and browse our Funding FAQ for further information.

CSC Cambridge Scholarship

This scholarship is available to PhD applicants from China in a range of academic subjects. It is tenable at any College.

This scholarship is offered in partnership with the China Scholarship Council.

Please note: a separate application is required for this scholarship.

Award details

Contribution towards travel costs.

Trust scholarships do not automatically fund the optional writing-up period (if applicable). Scholars will be able to apply for a brief period of extension funding, should it be required at the end of their scholarship.

Eligibility

Applicants should normally have a degree from a recognised university in the People's Republic of China.

Each year the China Scholarship Council sets a range of priority subjects. Please refer to their website for details.

Application Process

Candidates are selected by the China Scholarship Council (not the Trust). To ensure that they are considered for this scholarship, applicants must: 1) check with the China Scholarship Council the funding call deadlines and details of the application process, and apply accordingly; and 2) apply for admission to the University of Cambridge by the funding deadline specific to their course (please refer to the Postgraduate Course Directory).

The Trust’s awards period runs from March to the end of July and is an ongoing process throughout that period. The majority of our full awards are made in March. Some of our partner funded awards can take time, and sometimes when offers are declined we may be able to offer them elsewhere. Applicants will remain under consideration until the end of the awards period (31 July). We are not able to contact unsuccessful applicants. If you have not been contacted by the Trust by the end of the awards period, you should assume that your application has not been successful.

The Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust was established on 1 August 2013 from the merger of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust.  These were established as charities by the University of Cambridge in the 1980s in order to provide financial support for international students on degree courses at Cambridge.  The Trust awards approximately 500 scholarships annually, and supports between 1,100 and 1,400 students in residence each year from 85 countries across the world.  During its history of over 30 years of off... continue reading

Cambridge Trust

  • University tuition fee
  • Annual stipend (sufficient for a single person)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge

These are guidelines on eligibility for scholarships that are available from the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust:

  • All students, irrespective of nationality, are eligible to be considered for funding by the Trust.
  • The Trust does not accept applications from students who are part-way through a course at Cambridge, unless they are applying for funding towards a higher degree course following graduation.
  • To find out more about your fee status, see information on the University’s web pages for undergraduates and for postgraduates.
  • Applicants must be intending to start a course at the level of undergraduate (excluding UK/EU applicants), Masters (such as MPhil, MASt, LLM), or research postgraduate (such as PhD).

Please apply by the relevant deadline set for entry to your particular course and complete the ‘Funding’ section in the online  Applicant Portal  in order to be considered for funding.

No separate application is required for this scholarship, only the  application for admission  to the University of Cambridge, which must be submitted by the  funding deadline  specific to your course (please refer to the  Postgraduate Course Directory )

Important Notes:

  • Please note that the Trust does not offer many scholarships to students on undergraduate courses, and has many more scholarship programmes available to postgraduate students.  Approximately 85% of the scholarships awarded each year are to students taking Masters or PhD degrees.
  • The Trust will not normally support students at a degree level that is the same as, or lower than, a degree they already hold, with two exceptions – we will consider an application from a student who is required to take a second Masters degree at Cambridge in order to gain admission to the PhD here, or from an international (non-EU) student who is proposing to study as an affiliated student at Cambridge for a second BA degree.
  • The Trust does not have scholarships available for post-doctoral positions, or for visiting or exchange students.
  • The Trust does not have scholarships available for part-time postgraduate degrees, and part-time undergraduate study is not available at the University of Cambridge.
