However, access to landline phone service has not been complete for very long, and wireless service is not as widespread as many people might think. The first phone lines (landlines) connected Boston and Somerville, Massachusetts in 1877. The last town in the United States to receive landline service was Mink, Louisiana, a small community 100 miles south of Shreveport, which received landline service in early 2005. Check any major US wireless carrier, and its maps have gaps in service. Building networks of any kind takes planning, money, and time.

The Internet Association (IA, https://internetassociation.org/) was founded in 2012 as a trade association devoted to Internet-based companies. Founding companies included Google , Amazon , eBay , and Facebook . These Internet-based companies founded this new trade group because they did not have a voice in Washington, DC, with respect to potential regulations and laws. The IA has synergy—more influence as a group than each company would have individually.

In 1989, the new NFL owner of the Dallas Cowboys , Jerry Jones , fired the legendary coach Tom Landry and hired one of his former college football teammates, Jimmy Johnson , as the new head coach. Johnson faced the same problems that a new entrepreneur has: Who should be on my leadership team? What should be their responsibility? Out of twelve key coaching positions, Johnson kept only three coaches from Landry’s staff in the same positions and moved one coach to a different position. Within four years (1993), the Dallas Cowboys, under head coach Jimmy Johnson, won Super Bowl XXVII with six of the original coaches Johnson hired his first year still in the same positions.

Every four years, the United States elects a president. Although the incumbent might be reelected, the United States is guaranteed to have a new president at least every eight years. On winning the election, the new president must identify candidates for cabinet positions. Some potential candidates decline the invitation and voluntarily withdraw themselves from consideration. Those who accept the invitation are put through an intensive screening process. The president then submits cabinet-level nominees to the US Senate for confirmation. As in any close group, recruiting and selecting individuals to join the presidential cabinet is critical for the president to achieve any objectives or goals.

• What kind of experience is beneficial to members of a board of directors for a local performing arts group? Should they be experienced in industry? Government? Fundraising? Management? Marketing? The arts?

Narciso Gómez has worked in the service department at an auto dealership for about twenty-five years and has served as the service manager for the past seven years. He is qualified for retirement through the dealership but wants to open his own business. He is looking at buying a franchise, either a Jiffy Lube quick oil-change franchise that is for sale or a new SuperGlass Windshield Repair franchise. Both are automotive service and repair related, where he has plenty of experience.

• Besides his technical skills, what does Narciso need to consider before purchasing a franchise business?
• How might the estimated volume of work required to generate enough sales to cover his financial obligations affect his decision?
• The Jiffy Lube business model requires a four-bay facility. What does Narciso need to calculate in developing his business plan?
• The SuperGlass Windshield Repair is an on-site repair model whereby the technicians drive to the vehicle’s location for work. What should Narciso’s main concerns be in developing a business plan for this business model?

Han Jia-ying was an office manager for a construction company until she decided to be a stay-at-home mother with her kids. Her former employer has called her to take over some administrative work at home, such as payroll processing, payroll tax filings, bookkeeping, and other general administrative work. Her employer has said that some of his customers probably could employ her for their general administrative tasks.

• If she works from home, what type of scheduling issues does Jia-ying face? What might be some interruptions to her ability to meet specific deadlines, such as processing paychecks each week?
• If Jia-ying needs additional help, what options does she have? Would she be wise to hire an employee or seek some support from someone else? Who might that be? What problems might Jia-ying encounter when seeking a nonregular employee?
• Jia-ying will need new office equipment, including a new computer, a new scanner/printer, phone service, Internet connections, and so on. However, she is not tech savvy. How might she best manage working from home by herself, especially is something goes wrong or does not work?

Starting a wedding planning business is hard work, especially if you have no idea where to begin your journey. Over the years I have had the opportunity to train many wedding planners wanting to understand the business side of owning a wedding planning business. It is so necessary, but often overlooked. Because of this, I created the course: Launch Your Wedding Planner Biz Masterclass . Actions speak louder than words, I know this, and that is why I have enlisted a few students to journal their experience through my course. Follow along and see if their needs and solutions are what you’re seeking too. Today I’m introducing Sam. She is an aspiring wedding planner with her heart set on starting a business very soon.

Starting a Wedding Planning Business

I had been pondering the idea of starting my own product-based business for a year or so, starting a few ventures but not loving them or feeling ultra-motivated. Then I realized that I was craving some one-on-one client relationship or really any client interaction for that matter. With wedding planning, you get to know your client on a more personal level helping to understand their thoughts and their wedding vision, as you do spend six months to a year or more with this client. Much like graphic design, you begin with an idea and bring it through conceptualization all the way to fruition. Directing this journey for a bride or groom and bringing their vision to life will be such a rewarding career!

On a more personal note, my fiance and I plan to start having children in a few years and I’d love to be a stay-at-home mom but also contribute to our household. I would love to have a wedding planning business established and possibly a small team together by that time to be able to do so! 

My name is Sam, I’m 26-years-old and I live in Northern Virginia with my fiance Matt and our (pretty fat) black cat Storm. I currently work in a corporate marketing role full-time in a city outside of Washington D.C. Actually, Matt and I work at the same company! Though, contrary to how it may appear, that is not how we met. We started dating freshman year of college, after growing up in the same hometown in Ohio and attending the same high school. Other than my “9-5”, I truly enjoy all things creative. I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Visual Communication Design (a.k.a Graphic Design) and creating beautiful and functional things is my passion! Otherwise, in my spare time I love working out, spin class, being outside, coffee and crafting! Recently, my time has been filled with planning and designing my own September 2020 wedding. 

Why I want to become a wedding planner

This leads me to my next point. How did I make the jump from graphic design all the way to wedding planning? Back in my undergrad days I joined a sorority, absolutely the best decision of my college career! During this time, I took on many roles that pushed me to grow as an individual. One of them was Recruitment Director, I organized, designed and planned our 5-day Formal Recruitment event.

I remember going to the florist to order flowers for Preference Round and she asked me if it was for a wedding and I responded with “It might as well be!” and friends, this is how I came to love event planning! From there, I became the Chair Head for Formal Committee and Date Party Committee, dipping my toes in the vendor research, coordination and budget tracking pool and learning all about what it takes to plan a large event.

Unfortunately, it was too late in my undergrad to change my major, so I continued on with graphic design. Now four and a half years later, I’ve had the entrepreneurial itch for two years. It recently dawned on me that I have always loved event planning, I have an amazing eye for design and I’m loving planning my own wedding! So I asked myself, “Why don’t I change careers and start my own business?,” well of course that’s the answer. I felt so silly for not thinking of it sooner!

The Struggles of Starting a Wedding Planner Business

Starting my own wedding planning business doesn’t come without some fears or hesitations. Will I be able to get my business off the ground? Will I be able to make enough money to help support my family? How do I even begin to get started? While my fiance is nothing but supportive, I can’t help but think that I have minimal experience and my first real wedding is my own. Though at the same time, planning my own wedding, even with COVID-19, hasn’t been that hard or stressful for me and has definitely been enjoyable. Even though I have these fears, I am more excited to get started than anything else!

Enrolling in the Wedding Business Builder

I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity by Valerie to enroll in the Wedding Business Builder! I’m looking forward to this course giving me the base set of skills I need to start a wedding planning business. Anything from the legal side of starting my business, creating and pricing packages, creating relationships with clients and vendors and how to have a productive consultation with a client just to name a few things. For me, this is much more than just starting a business, it’s truly the next big step in my life and I am beyond excited to begin with the help of Valerie’s course.
