Unlike the name implies a critical analysis does not necessarily mean that you are only exploring what is wrong with a piece of work. Instead, the purpose of this type of essay is to interact with and understand a text. Here’s what you need to know to create a well-written critical analysis essay.

What is a critical analysis?

A critical analysis examines and evaluates someone else’s work, such as a book, an essay, or an article. It requires two steps: a careful reading of the work and thoughtful analysis of the information presented in the work.

Although this may sound complicated, all you are doing in a critical essay is closely reading an author’s work and providing your opinion on how well the author accomplished their purpose.

Critical analyses are most frequently done in academic settings (such as a class assignment). Writing a critical analysis demonstrates that you are able to read a text and think deeply about it. However, critical thinking skills are vital outside of an educational context as well. You just don’t always have to demonstrate them in essay form.

How to outline and write a critical analysis essay

Writing a critical analysis essay involves two main chunks of work: reading the text you are going to write about and writing an analysis of that text. Both are equally important when writing a critical analysis essay.

Step one: Reading critically

The first step in writing a critical analysis is to carefully study the source you plan to analyze.

If you are writing for a class assignment, your professor may have already given you the topic to analyze in an article, short story, book, or other work. If so, you can focus your note-taking on that topic while reading.

Other times, you may have to develop your own topic to analyze within a piece of work. In this case, you should focus on a few key areas as you read:

  • What is the author’s intended purpose for the work?
  • What techniques and language does the author use to achieve this purpose?
  • How does the author support the thesis?
  • Who is the author writing for?
  • Is the author effective at achieving the intended purpose?

Once you have carefully examined the source material, then you are ready to begin planning your critical analysis essay.

Step two: Writing the critical analysis essay

Taking time to organize your ideas before you begin writing can shorten the amount of time that you spend working on your critical analysis essay. As an added bonus, the quality of your essay will likely be higher if you have a plan before writing.

Here’s a rough outline of what should be in your essay. Of course, if your instructor gives you a sample essay or outline, refer to the sample first.

  • Background Information

Critical Analysis

Here is some additional information on what needs to go into each section:

Background information

In the first paragraph of your essay, include background information on the material that you are critiquing. Include context that helps the reader understand the piece you are analyzing. Be sure to include the title of the piece, the author’s name, and information about when and where it was published.

“Success is counted sweetest” is a poem by Emily Dickinson published in 1864. Dickinson was not widely known as a poet during her lifetime, and this poem is one of the first published while she was alive.

After you have provided background information, state your thesis. The thesis should be your reaction to the work. It also lets your reader know what to expect from the rest of your essay. The points you make in the critical analysis should support the thesis.

Dickinson’s use of metaphor in the poem is unexpected but works well to convey the paradoxical theme that success is most valued by those who never experience success.

The next section should include a summary of the work that you are analyzing. Do not assume that the reader is familiar with the source material. Your summary should show that you understood the text, but it should not include the arguments that you will discuss later in the essay.

Dickinson introduces the theme of success in the first line of the poem. She begins by comparing success to nectar. Then, she uses the extended metaphor of a battle in order to demonstrate that the winner has less understanding of success than the loser.

The next paragraphs will contain your critical analysis. Use as many paragraphs as necessary to support your thesis.

Discuss the areas that you took notes on as you were reading. While a critical analysis should include your opinion, it needs to have evidence from the source material in order to be credible to readers. Be sure to use textual evidence to support your claims, and remember to explain your reasoning.

Dickinson’s comparison of success to nectar seems strange at first. However the first line “success is counted sweetest” brings to mind that this nectar could be bees searching for nectar to make honey. In this first stanza, Dickinson seems to imply that success requires work because bees are usually considered to be hard-working and industrious.

In the next two stanzas, Dickinson expands on the meaning of success. This time she uses the image of a victorious army and a dying man on the vanquished side. Now the idea of success is more than something you value because you have worked hard for it. Dickinson states that the dying man values success even more than the victors because he has given everything and still has not achieved success.

This last section is where you remind the readers of your thesis and make closing remarks to wrap up your essay. Avoid summarizing the main points of your critical analysis unless your essay is so long that readers might have forgotten parts of it.

In “Success is counted sweetest” Dickinson cleverly upends the reader’s usual thoughts about success through her unexpected use of metaphors. The poem may be short, but Dickinson conveys a serious theme in just a few carefully chosen words.

What type of language should be used in a critical analysis essay?

Because critical analysis papers are written in an academic setting, you should use formal language, which means:

  • No contractions
  • Avoid first-person pronouns (I, we, me)

Do not include phrases such as “in my opinion” or “I think”. In a critical analysis, the reader already assumes that the claims are your opinions.

Your instructor may have specific guidelines for the writing style to use. If the instructor assigns a style guide for the class, be sure to use the guidelines in the style manual in your writing.

Additional t ips for writing a critical analysis essay

To conclude this article, here are some additional tips for writing a critical analysis essay:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to read the source material. If you have time, read through the text once to get the gist and a second time to take notes.
  • Outlining your essay can help you save time. You don’t have to stick exactly to the outline though. You can change it as needed once you start writing.
  • Spend the bulk of your writing time working on your thesis and critical analysis. The introduction and conclusion are important, but these sections cannot make up for a weak thesis or critical analysis.
  • Give yourself time between your first draft and your second draft. A day or two away from your essay can make it easier to see what you need to improve.

Frequently Asked Questions about critical analyses

In the introduction of a critical analysis essay, you should give background information on the source that you are analyzing. Be sure to include the author’s name and the title of the work. Your thesis normally goes in the introduction as well.

A critical analysis has four main parts.

  • Introduction

The focus of a critical analysis should be on the work being analyzed rather than on you. This means that you should avoid using first person unless your instructor tells you to do otherwise. Most formal academic writing is written in third person.

How many paragraphs your critical analysis should have depends on the assignment and will most likely be determined by your instructor. However, in general, your critical analysis paper should have three to six paragraphs, unless otherwise stated.

Your critical analysis ends with your conclusion. You should restate the thesis and make closing remarks, but avoid summarizing the main points of your critical analysis unless your essay is so long that readers might have forgotten parts of it.

About conclusions

Introductions and conclusions can be difficult to write, but they’re worth investing time in. They can have a significant influence on a reader’s experience of your paper.

Just as your introduction acts as a bridge that transports your readers from their own lives into the “place” of your analysis, your conclusion can provide a bridge to help your readers make the transition back to their daily lives. Such a conclusion will help them see why all your analysis and information should matter to them after they put the paper down.

Your conclusion is your chance to have the last word on the subject. The conclusion allows you to have the final say on the issues you have raised in your paper, to synthesize your thoughts, to demonstrate the importance of your ideas, and to propel your reader to a new view of the subject. It is also your opportunity to make a good final impression and to end on a positive note.

Your conclusion can go beyond the confines of the assignment. The conclusion pushes beyond the boundaries of the prompt and allows you to consider broader issues, make new connections, and elaborate on the significance of your findings.

Your conclusion should make your readers glad they read your paper. Your conclusion gives your reader something to take away that will help them see things differently or appreciate your topic in personally relevant ways. It can suggest broader implications that will not only interest your reader, but also enrich your reader’s life in some way. It is your gift to the reader.

Strategies for writing an effective conclusion

One or more of the following strategies may help you write an effective conclusion:

  • Play the “So What” Game. If you’re stuck and feel like your conclusion isn’t saying anything new or interesting, ask a friend to read it with you. Whenever you make a statement from your conclusion, ask the friend to say, “So what?” or “Why should anybody care?” Then ponder that question and answer it. Here’s how it might go: You: Basically, I’m just saying that education was important to Douglass. Friend: So what? You: Well, it was important because it was a key to him feeling like a free and equal citizen. Friend: Why should anybody care? You: That’s important because plantation owners tried to keep slaves from being educated so that they could maintain control. When Douglass obtained an education, he undermined that control personally. You can also use this strategy on your own, asking yourself “So What?” as you develop your ideas or your draft.
  • Return to the theme or themes in the introduction. This strategy brings the reader full circle. For example, if you begin by describing a scenario, you can end with the same scenario as proof that your essay is helpful in creating a new understanding. You may also refer to the introductory paragraph by using key words or parallel concepts and images that you also used in the introduction.
  • Synthesize, don’t summarize. Include a brief summary of the paper’s main points, but don’t simply repeat things that were in your paper. Instead, show your reader how the points you made and the support and examples you used fit together. Pull it all together.
  • Include a provocative insight or quotation from the research or reading you did for your paper.
  • Propose a course of action, a solution to an issue, or questions for further study. This can redirect your reader’s thought process and help them to apply your info and ideas to their own life or to see the broader implications.
  • Point to broader implications. For example, if your paper examines the Greensboro sit-ins or another event in the Civil Rights Movement, you could point out its impact on the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. A paper about the style of writer Virginia Woolf could point to her influence on other writers or on later feminists.

Strategies to avoid

  • Beginning with an unnecessary, overused phrase such as “in conclusion,” “in summary,” or “in closing.” Although these phrases can work in speeches, they come across as wooden and trite in writing.
  • Stating the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion.
  • Introducing a new idea or subtopic in your conclusion.
  • Ending with a rephrased thesis statement without any substantive changes.
  • Making sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of character with the rest of an analytical paper.
  • Including evidence (quotations, statistics, etc.) that should be in the body of the paper.

Four kinds of ineffective conclusions

  • The “That’s My Story and I’m Sticking to It” Conclusion. This conclusion just restates the thesis and is usually painfully short. It does not push the ideas forward. People write this kind of conclusion when they can’t think of anything else to say. Example: In conclusion, Frederick Douglass was, as we have seen, a pioneer in American education, proving that education was a major force for social change with regard to slavery.
  • The “Sherlock Holmes” Conclusion. Sometimes writers will state the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion. You might be tempted to use this strategy if you don’t want to give everything away too early in your paper. You may think it would be more dramatic to keep the reader in the dark until the end and then “wow” them with your main idea, as in a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The reader, however, does not expect a mystery, but an analytical discussion of your topic in an academic style, with the main argument (thesis) stated up front. Example: (After a paper that lists numerous incidents from the book but never says what these incidents reveal about Douglass and his views on education): So, as the evidence above demonstrates, Douglass saw education as a way to undermine the slaveholders’ power and also an important step toward freedom.
  • The “America the Beautiful”/”I Am Woman”/”We Shall Overcome” Conclusion. This kind of conclusion usually draws on emotion to make its appeal, but while this emotion and even sentimentality may be very heartfelt, it is usually out of character with the rest of an analytical paper. A more sophisticated commentary, rather than emotional praise, would be a more fitting tribute to the topic. Example: Because of the efforts of fine Americans like Frederick Douglass, countless others have seen the shining beacon of light that is education. His example was a torch that lit the way for others. Frederick Douglass was truly an American hero.
  • The “Grab Bag” Conclusion. This kind of conclusion includes extra information that the writer found or thought of but couldn’t integrate into the main paper. You may find it hard to leave out details that you discovered after hours of research and thought, but adding random facts and bits of evidence at the end of an otherwise-well-organized essay can just create confusion. Example: In addition to being an educational pioneer, Frederick Douglass provides an interesting case study for masculinity in the American South. He also offers historians an interesting glimpse into slave resistance when he confronts Covey, the overseer. His relationships with female relatives reveal the importance of family in the slave community.

A critical essay is a form of academic writing that analyzes, interprets, and/or evaluates a text. In a critical essay, an author makes a claim about how particular ideas or themes are conveyed in a text, then supports that claim with evidence from primary and/or secondary sources.

In casual conversation, we often associate the word "critical" with a negative perspective. However, in the context of a critical essay, the word "critical" simply means discerning and analytical. Critical essays analyze and evaluate the meaning and significance of a text, rather than making a judgment about its content or quality.

What Makes an Essay "Critical"? 

Imagine you've just watched the movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." If you were chatting with friends in the movie theater lobby, you might say something like, "Charlie was so lucky to find a Golden Ticket. That ticket changed his life." A friend might reply, "Yeah, but Willy Wonka shouldn't have let those raucous kids into his chocolate factory in the first place. They caused a big mess."

These comments make for an enjoyable conversation, but they do not belong in a critical essay. Why? Because they respond to (and pass judgment on) the raw content of the movie, rather than analyzing its themes or how the director conveyed those themes.

On the other hand, a critical essay about "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" might take the following topic as its thesis: "In 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,' director Mel Stuart intertwines money and morality through his depiction of children: the angelic appearance of Charlie Bucket, a good-hearted boy of modest means, is sharply contrasted against the physically grotesque portrayal of the wealthy, and thus immoral, children."

This thesis includes a claim about the themes of the film, what the director seems to be saying about those themes, and what techniques the director employs in order to communicate his message. In addition, this thesis is both supportable  and  disputable using evidence from the film itself, which means it's a strong central argument for a critical essay .

Characteristics of a Critical Essay

Critical essays are written across many academic disciplines and can have wide-ranging textual subjects: films, novels, poetry, video games, visual art, and more. However, despite their diverse subject matter, all critical essays share the following characteristics.

  • Central claim . All critical essays contain a central claim about the text. This argument is typically expressed at the beginning of the essay in a thesis statement , then supported with evidence in each body paragraph. Some critical essays bolster their argument even further by including potential counterarguments, then using evidence to dispute them.
  • Evidence . The central claim of a critical essay must be supported by evidence. In many critical essays, most of the evidence comes in the form of textual support: particular details from the text (dialogue, descriptions, word choice, structure, imagery, et cetera) that bolster the argument. Critical essays may also include evidence from secondary sources, often scholarly works that support or strengthen the main argument.
  • Conclusion . After making a claim and supporting it with evidence, critical essays offer a succinct conclusion. The conclusion summarizes the trajectory of the essay's argument and emphasizes the essays' most important insights.

Tips for Writing a Critical Essay

Writing a critical essay requires rigorous analysis and a meticulous argument-building process. If you're struggling with a critical essay assignment, these tips will help you get started.

  • Practice active reading strategies . These strategies for staying focused and retaining information will help you identify specific details in the text that will serve as evidence for your main argument. Active reading is an essential skill, especially if you're writing a critical essay for a literature class.
  • Read example essays . If you're unfamiliar with critical essays as a form, writing one is going to be extremely challenging. Before you dive into the writing process, read a variety of published critical essays, paying careful attention to their structure and writing style. (As always, remember that paraphrasing an author's ideas without proper attribution is a form of plagiarism .)
  • Resist the urge to summarize . Critical essays should consist of your own analysis and interpretation of a text, not a summary of the text in general. If you find yourself writing lengthy plot or character descriptions, pause and consider whether these summaries are in the service of your main argument or whether they are simply taking up space.

Cultural Analysis

This type of analysis involves examining and interpreting cultural artifacts , such as advertisements, popular music, and social media posts. The analysis involves examining the cultural context of the artifact and how it reflects and shapes cultural values, beliefs, and norms.

Historical Analysis

This type of analysis involves examining and interpreting historical documents , such as diaries, letters, and government records. The analysis involves examining the historical context of the document and how it reflects the social, political, and cultural attitudes of the time.

Philosophical Analysis

This type of analysis involves examining and interpreting philosophical texts and ideas, such as the works of philosophers and their arguments. The analysis involves evaluating the logical consistency of the arguments and assessing the validity and soundness of the conclusions.

Scientific Analysis

This type of analysis involves examining and interpreting scientific research studies and their findings. The analysis involves evaluating the methods used in the study, the data collected, and the conclusions drawn, and assessing their reliability and validity.

Critical Discourse Analysis

This type of analysis involves examining and interpreting language use in social and political contexts. The analysis involves evaluating the power dynamics and social relationships conveyed through language use and how they shape discourse and social reality.

Comparative Analysis

This type of analysis involves examining and interpreting multiple texts or works of art and comparing them to each other. The analysis involves evaluating the similarities and differences between the texts and how they contribute to understanding the themes and meanings conveyed.

I. Introduction

How to Write Critical Analysis

Writing a critical analysis involves evaluating and interpreting a text, such as a book, article, or film, and expressing your opinion about its quality and significance. Here are some steps you can follow to write a critical analysis:

  • Read and re-read the text: Before you begin writing, make sure you have a good understanding of the text. Read it several times and take notes on the key points, themes, and arguments.
  • Identify the author’s purpose and audience: Consider why the author wrote the text and who the intended audience is. This can help you evaluate whether the author achieved their goals and whether the text is effective in reaching its audience.
  • Analyze the structure and style: Look at the organization of the text and the author’s writing style. Consider how these elements contribute to the overall meaning of the text.
  • Evaluate the content : Analyze the author’s arguments, evidence, and conclusions. Consider whether they are logical, convincing, and supported by the evidence presented in the text.

The end of an essay should therefore convey a sense of completeness and closure as well as a sense of the lingering possibilities of the topic, its larger meaning, its implications: the final paragraph should close the discussion without closing it off.

To establish a sense of closure, you might do one or more of the following:

  • Conclude by linking the last paragraph to the first, perhaps by reiterating a word or phrase you used at the beginning.
  • Conclude with a sentence composed mainly of one-syllable words. Simple language can help create an effect of understated drama.
  • Conclude with a sentence that's compound or parallel in structure; such sentences can establish a sense of balance or order that may feel just right at the end of a complex discussion.

To close the discussion without closing it off, you might do one or more of the following:

  • Conclude with a quotation from or reference to a primary or secondary source, one that amplifies your main point or puts it in a different perspective. A quotation from, say, the novel or poem you're writing about can add texture and specificity to your discussion; a critic or scholar can help confirm or complicate your final point. For example, you might conclude an essay on the idea of home in James Joyce's short story collection,  Dubliners , with information about Joyce's own complex feelings towards Dublin, his home.   • Conclude by considering the implications of your argument (or analysis or discussion). What does your argument imply, or involve, or suggest? For example, an essay on the novel  Ambiguous Adventure , by the Senegalese writer Cheikh Hamidou Kane, might open with the idea that the protagonist's development suggests Kane's belief in the need to integrate Western materialism and Sufi spirituality in modern Senegal. The conclusion might make the new but related point that the novel on the whole suggests that such an integration is (or isn't) possible.

Finally, some advice on how not to end an essay:

  • Don't simply summarize your essay. A brief summary of your argument may be useful, especially if your essay is long--more than ten pages or so. But shorter essays tend not to require a restatement of your main ideas.
  • Avoid phrases like "in conclusion," "to conclude," "in summary," and "to sum up." These phrases can be useful--even welcome--in oral presentations. But readers can see, by the tell-tale compression of the pages, when an essay is about to end. You'll irritate your audience if you belabor the obvious.
  • Resist the urge to apologize. If you've immersed yourself in your subject, you now know a good deal more about it than you can possibly include in a five- or ten- or 20-page essay. As a result, by the time you've finished writing, you may be having some doubts about what you've produced. (And if you haven't immersed yourself in your subject, you may be feeling even more doubtful about your essay as you approach the conclusion.) Repress those doubts. Don't undercut your authority by saying things like, "this is just one approach to the subject; there may be other, better approaches. . ."

Critical Analysis of Socrates' (Diotima's) View of Love -

1. introduction.

The one theme that I shall discuss is Eros. A major focus of this dialogue written by Plato, Diotima’s dicta, Socrates credited her with, bears on Eros. Diotima is the speaker, driving critical concepts that Socrates provided. My topic is unusually specific and for a reason: nearly all available criticism of Eros, Socrates’ or Diotima’s, in this until-now written script under-title part of Symposium, treats with restraint largely diachronically of something called the view of Eros from all materials presumed. This one paper shall be one of the steps forward the new approach, which I do not know how to call yet, and treat this Socratic Diotima’s own view of Eros instead synoptically and synchronically. View in the title in any case will be related to Love (division 32―256) unless said otherwise, and I do not do summary or comparative treatment today. Included are such limitations and constraints with intense study in search of synchronic dynamics in advancing present knowledge and view here: (1) the central evaluator is Socrates, the thinker, worded character, not Diotima’s, Diotima who is about whom it is said that Socrates was learned from her about the matters of Love (I shall have to judge if Socrates how endowed by Diotima overtakes himself often), so that the Socratic points viewed synthesizably can be unified in rather one view, (2) Omitted is the Eastern overview that takes only Ochs’s inspiration (minus athematic communism in that orientation) who makes a hermeneutics remarks that Socratic Love has an oriental analogue called Divine Eros in Syrian tradition (this problem, to say the least, “represents grave technical and exegetical difficulties,” but lies always in Love as praise of or gender) from all East and West, to get properly pursued later, and (3) only the upper half of Love will be considered from Diotima essentially at this time, when, perhaps averring (SYMP.207b8) the bottom would beg Diotima’s outbreak of disdain on Socratic Love where plenty of students jumped over their heads demanding immediate teachings of politics, instantly.

2. Socrates' (Diotima's) View of Love

Socrates' speech in the 'Symposium' concerns many dimensions of love. It is the origin, the development, and the cultivation of love that he presents as the aim of the speech. Love is examined briefly as a virtue leading to happiness or as knowledge. Love's singularity is discussed within the broader framework of the multiplicity of virtues. Love is positioned in the middle and is presented at the end in relation to beauty and goodness. In the middle spectrum of the philosophical movement, desire is located as a permanent power of the soul. If it were not permanent, it would constantly bring the opposite condition of anguish and a lack of any philosophical-experiential approach. The Socratic movement is put into practice through a methodological sequence taking place in the field of active and productive dialogue processes. When a person engages with virtue and addresses it within the framework of what it is and what it concerns about love, their position as a learner-wise is activated. At least, they believe they attain the level of the intermediate position and pass through the contemplation of the abstract model of beauty to arrive at the indivisible part of everything, the Idea of Life. Through such an experience, the individual delineates their quiddity's character in chronological-qualitative relation to diachronia (eternally) time, where love-eros is the exclusive guide. Love has the capacity to develop an association between all the participants, including those who are within the limits of the intermediate spectrum of the movement. Everyone's knowledge, at different levels, aims at the life of the active citizen, the life of the politically arranged man. This is achieved during the time that love leads the human being into contemplation through methodical and symbolic dialectics. A great reminder of this love for the beautiful is a beginning. Once individuals move towards love, they overlook beauty and find the good, which is the absolute virtue and from where we derive our absolute knowledge. In these times, starting with their temporal and partial virtues, they expand them and achieve absolute virtue. They, after having been members of the economic and political space, get elevated to various Beitia and Ideals and possess Absolute Knowledge. All these embrace the Absolute Good, the universe's goodness emerging within the framework of R&B's Kinetic toward the intermediate position of total "intellectual synthesis".

2.1. Definition of Love

Love is an interesting topic. It is documented that since the beginning of time, there have been poets, artists, musicians, philosophers, psychologists, and theologians trying to capture the essence of love. For many, they leave loved ones and families to search for it, while others dedicate their lives in the pursuit of an understanding of it. So when we ask ourselves the question "What is love?" we are not the first ones to do so. However, we should not be fearful of this question. This paper is an effort to explain the purpose and influence of the Platonic view of love as given in the Symposium. I will study this view in three settings, the first of which will be through the worst speech, attributed to Phaedrus. In this section, I will show that the Platonic lover loves only the physical body, not the soul, of the loved one. The second section, through the teachings of Socrates, shows that the role of love in a mortal's life is to help transform the lover from finding beauty in the physical appearance of the body to finding beauty within the soul. In the final section, once the lover found such a soul, love's role is to help an already divinely inspired soul reach the heights of knowledge. This paper proposes that the purpose and influence of love given in the Symposium may be to ultimately lead the man (or woman) to the divine and through this, become the happiest person capable. First, let us define love. Early in the dialogue, before love is formally introduced by the worse speech, it is declared that it is a great god or daimon. It is, supposedly, love that governs and inspires creativity in mortal man. Around this time is when we see Diotima, the focus of all of Socrates' discussions, the woman that taught Socrates. Diotima's insight of love is considered for the first time in the dialogue. She begins her speech by saying "I am skilled in judging a man, brave, terrible and wise, mighty things, things both high and not trivial, and in the case of these very things, phronesis. Do not suppose... it is otherwise... than man-seeking and love-addicted - in every kind of longing for company, talking and joint activities,... since, when people use to be willing to die for their love, they were not willing to give up their lover to die to keep themselves, and I say... of that, one is wise and prudent".

2.2. The Ladder of Love

I will now proceed to discuss the ladder of love, which is Diotima's doctrine of how one should ascend to the vision of the idea of beauty (the form of the good). The ladder of love is an evolution of the alchemical microcosmic-macrocosmic principle. The general idea is that in order to ascend to the ultimate vision of the good, one must proceed along 8 different stages, each of which is a form of love. The reason why only philosophers and the rest are not able to have the vision is that they do not pass through a sufficient number of stages in the ladder. The stages correspond to different actions, but the only two important ones are sexual love (which occurs in the first three stages and which aims at the reproduction in beauty of male mind and virtue in general) and through moral improvement. In this way, the initiated by love professor of lover (all those who are sexually in love) starts to become a lover himself. Analyzing the sexual love and the Platonic idea of reproduction in beauty with the tools of Diotima's lecture, I came to conclusions which support statements expressed in different works. Love is a one-way street which starts and passes through sexual attraction, and only by a peculiar, dialectic method called the method of moral improvement, the initiated professor of lover evolves to a lover. The way of accomplishing a synthesis of the few available knowledge lovers all along the ages gives reason to believe that the initiated professor of lover knows more than one (the vision of the idea of the beautiful), so that the succession plus sexual attraction corresponds to the successive phases of the synthesis. As a synthesis, the knowledge of one (contemplation of the absolute beauty) is a sky phenomenon, and in order to know this, the professors of lover must, at the stage of lovers, get carried away by the realization that what they know and what they do, in other words, form and matter, desert and come alive in a more perfect form and must move to the following stage. Only when they became aware that the 1+1 process stopped and the minute after it started to produce something else appropriate to the new wholeness, they may proceed to the next stage.

2.3. Love as a Means to Attain Immortality

In a culture and society in which men wanted to attain honour and glory, they had to father male children so that their names could be carried on. Consequently, only the sexual act between the male and female could be considered natural for the male. However, in nature, the functions performed by both reproduction of the species and satisfaction of the sexual impulse are identical. Hence, through the love of the beautiful, Socrates can attain immortality, a kind of life in others, by giving birth to such love. Since love purifies Socrates, his life more than doubles when love is in him. Besides such creative solutions, Socrates' arguments, according to the Platonic dialectic of the idea of Love, are also technically unsound. As mentioned earlier, the idea of a thing is always social and political. It must be a product of a dialectic between at least two interlocutors, but preferably more, so that no suspension may occur during the process. Once arisen and defined, the common idea takes its place on the shelves of the logician and leads a life on its own. Hegel even goes one step further: ideas which could not be discussed between generations cannot be accommodated. The mere fact that the idea of the Beautiful cannot be defined and fixed in moment-bound speech will make the dialectic dialogue about Love impossible. Love is flow, and can only be expressed in poetry. Socratic interrogation is that of infants, disputing transient opinions, shouting beneath a smoky sky, without a life-giving outlet.

3. Critique of Socrates' (Diotima's) View

In this section, I shall argue that Socrates' view of love (as expressed via Diotima) is a fairly definitive refutation of what I shall here mean by the "Simplistic" view of love. I will support my argument with four basic lines of argument. My first line points out this: that Socrates' view undermines the agent love theorist's strongest statement against non-agent love theorists, namely, his claim that only the former love - that only agent interests and able beings and (recall:) of course all three-part beings, love. My second line points out this: that Socrates' view undermines the corollary from the second law of love (which we here may call, 252b's claim of the stronger filia relationship between parents and children of theirs than with no filia relationships), i.e., the above characteristically conflation-of-relationship mention whereby benefit to the lover is entailed by love. A third line of argument completes the necessary undermining of the conflation: the priests to the second law of love and the third purely non-agent love corollary of Socrates' view. This third line points out a further claim to be made by the "False Beauty Expositor", an illuminating Socrates/Diotiman corollary to the "third" as well. Consider, then, the major objective of the third corollary, signed by Socrates in the quartet opening 251c during his concessive-conversion crescendo. Here Socrates speaks: "Yes, and I call god and the muses to witness:" etc. Socrates says he's calling down their existence to his great love and friendship with Agathon here. This betrays the belief that validating the third corollary is imperative for Socrates in this quartet while concluding his universalizing rhetoric.

3.1. Lack of Practicality

A) Lack of practicality: This is the most damning criticism raised against the book. Plato considers this point too with his Artisan-Guardian distinction. Al-Farabi makes a similar distinction in that Plato is drawing an unnatural distinction between the Idea and the World of generation and that an ideal polis cannot be realized. So during Plato's lifetime, either this great male that has these virtues that make him a polity lover does not exist, or if the man exists, he is out there running a state somewhere, not in his parlour realizing the Form of Beauty! For someone who is wise and knows what love amounts to, the right sort of love would occur between equal parties with similar virtues, in order to produce and rear admirable offspring. So, Diotima does outline how the male can fulfill his end of procreation through the organization and the selection of the right female, but the love with such a wife will be noble but not the sort of divine love that she advised Socrates to do. The virtues which manifest in the polity-lover also make him 'blissful' 'festively singing paeans'. This must mean that the male has succeeded in generating the Idea. And talent/techne ensures that he continues to expand that Idea. But now, the philosopher must take his tools out and, by offering correct discourses, make the Idea take root in the city. This would mean that the philosopher, now faced with explaining the department of philosophy, creates fascination in the minds of its citizens. This would force its citizens toward philosophy. The philosopher-politician must now govern by philosophy, explaining the training, such as burnt offering to the gods, and feast to the Great Zeus, god of hospitality, in order to put the true living in the living. The result of intelligence and its function is the same: by using intelligence, the authority of the philosopher in the city.

3.2. Ignoring Other Forms of Love

Name and Nature of Love 3.2.1 Diotima's next goal is to account for the differences of love. As she proceeds to do this, she reveals that in giving an account of love proper, she has in mind solitary passionate love. We shall, as said, make a distinction between love and love proper, and both Einzig and Retsinas pose objections to the view that passionate love is the natural focus of a theory of love. 3.2.2 Einzig does not think that there is sufficient distinction between love and other forms of love so that only in a theory of what we are calling love proper can the differences be accounted for. There are different kinds, genus-relative loved situations which themselves have different kinds of love; all by themselves can motivate an action. Altruistic love, for example, is love that is loved. The audience highly values the recipients' lives. This is a laudable, worthy object of robust emotion. Emulating love, on the other hand, does involve a lofty object of love but adds another aspect also, that is, the reason the object should be loved. When a person admires another and loves him for his traits, he should not only do this because it directs his attention to the good act but also to the fact that he is seeking someone or something like him, indeed, to the possibility that one might surpass him.

3.3. The Role of Physical Attraction

The role of physical attraction matters in any sort of relationship, whether it be a mere or intense one. This always serves as the starting point upon which a relationship may evolve and grow stronger because the attraction of one person or thing to another seems to be a fundamental characteristic of nature given by the gods. Since the essential nature of nature is explained as an instinctive movement of the soul toward truth and goodness, Eros, like the fundamental nature of the cosmos and the soul, is an essence of nature given by the gods and governed by divine principles. The more substantial knowledge of the gods, their natures, and their effects in connection with the cosmos and the souls presumably includes not only the knowledge of the nature or essence of the souls but also their relationship to the divine. Lower physical attraction is thus a source of pain simply because Eros is actually searching to be reunited with the gods. Despite this "animal" form of Eros, it is not dirty, beastly, or limited to sexual acts: physical attraction is a real, actual aspect of Eros, even in virtuous people. Alcibiades's version of the myth is an appropriate conclusion of the story of Diotima: to provoke his friend into pursuing virtue, he has made it explicit that Socrates can really attract his soul. Therefore, physical Eros is an important aspect of any kind of inclusive relationship, not just as the primary source of hostility. Particularly in the early conversations, then, Socrates comments that the distinction between physical beauty and educational beauty is impossible but that an accomplished man will gain a vision by a single form of beauty. We are attracted to someone beautiful, reflecting concerns because of the beauty of the whole picture. The ultimate object of attraction is not the beauty itself, i.e. it is not merely a human being, but what one values in that person, i.e. only the soul. If eyes are not the objects of sight, then true knowledge is not of the visible, and reason neither is a belief in what one knows is not visible. Since the ultimate purpose is moving towards perfect goodness, the end of both lovers and the properly instructed symposium participants, Socrates simply focuses on reducing their way of life to realizing the Good. In the end, with the proper form of stars, the lover must finally face reality, beauty itself, and intellectual knowledge. First, erotic struggles are not just related to pleasure or self-preservation; they are actually very important.

3.4. Contradictions in Socrates' Argument

To do justice to Socrates’ argument, of course, we have to recognize that he says Diotima corrected him: she "never praised" Socrates for maintaining that Love is both a lover and someone who lacks what he desires and good not a lover, yet the speech that Plato put in Socrates’ mouth proves that Socrates did state his strange views about Love. In the view of several scholars now, Socratic ignorance and irony dictate that his speeches that we see as sarcastic reversals are not in fact reversals. To them, this speech is no paradox, only Socratic irony. I follow most other readers of the dialogue in viewing Socratic irony as Socratic irony: perhaps Socrates is making us scrutinize our simple errors at length, until we see the problems Socrates has seen all along. The result for many of us then seems to be that instead of transforming our understanding of love and thought as Socrates hoped via this divine speech of Diotima’s, we find that the ultimate products of this story are skepticism and mystery. Not only do we now see love and thought as distinct, but we also find that love remains ultimately ineffable. What of Socrates’ claim in his early supports of love, that love is a desire for something we lack, something all of us learn to agree to? You may find what I do convincing, the idea that love is a natural desire is that of someone talking like Socrates. Others will disagree: they have a point if they say that is not Socrates’ opinion. Still, there is a truth to Socrates’ earlier lesson to us about love, that one who disowns love entirely will come to disown the pursuit of any desirable goal at all and retreat into oblivion.

4. Conclusion

In conclusion, there are a number of anomalies in Diotima's account of love (in the main, what 'love' and 'the form of the beautiful' are and how the latter is supposed to produce happiness in pursuing the former), but it is hard to detect how serious or insoluble most are. Her view - love as the child of resource and poverty (or feminine necessity and masculine fertility) and the lover of physical allure - is initially unpromising. But with qualifications (it loves visible beauty only because a sense of neurosis means it lacks an appreciation of the truly handsome), it is shown to be not entirely false. The theory of forms is not without its flaws - according to Glaucon, 'more recondite ones' - and Socrates does not even reveal most of the good, but crucially, the concept of hierarchy and integration between forms is still valid. And if we consider love not just in terms of its part on reproductive biology but also of its more metaphorical roles denoting the virtues of good company, we see that same-sex nymphs can illustrate the unhappiness (Plato) love has on the soul. So overall, while Diotima's account is tricky, it is also impressively ambitious and outlined by the parish values of ancient sex. Critical analysis of Socrates' views of love: How Socrates' views of love are portrayed in the Symposium through Diotima's "speech". One of the most interesting interests he offers in his introductory comments about love concerns the topic's unpredictable start. Part of why love features so initially - it suggested itself, as no self-respecting argument is willing to make love - is Socrates' familiarity with the theory of forms. But this principle, while valid, does not seem to have much (or at least terribly interesting) to do with love at first sight and charm. Even with a provisional qualification (viz, our nascent feelings of love are accurate reflections of our form-conceptualizing faculties - even in our most smitten moments, when we insist on the physical beauty of our infatuations, what we are really in love with is not their corporeal beauty but that it acts as a beam of primogenital light, dazzling the eye of the soul to allow imperceptible recall of the form of beauty).

The Online Writing Lab at Purdue University houses writing resources and instructional material, and we provide these as a free service of the Writing Lab at Purdue. Students, members of the community, and users worldwide will find information to assist with many writing projects. Teachers and trainers may use this material for in-class and out-of-class instruction.

The Purdue On-Campus Writing Lab and Purdue Online Writing Lab assist clients in their development as writers—no matter what their skill level—with on-campus consultations, online participation, and community engagement.
