Travel On The Fly

What Does “Standby List” Mean on Delta Airlines? (Explained)

If you’re flying Delta Airlines, but something comes up making it so you don’t know if you’ll make your flight, don’t worry. Excluding Basic Economy passengers, for travelers flying domestically (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) and needing to make changes to their flight itinerary within 24 hours of their scheduled departure, you can either fly “Standby,” or go with “Same-Day Confirmed.”

delta standby list for seat assignment

“Flying Standby” means that If a Same-Day Confirmed flight change isn’t available, that may make you eligible to be on the waiting list to “stand by” for an open seat on a different flight.

Note that both Same-Day Confirmed and standby are only available for flights departing on the same day the short-notice change is made and that same-day standby is only offered if Same-Day Confirmed is unavailable.

The standby list is administered at the departure gate shortly before, and sometimes after boarding.  Delta elite travelers (Medallion, SkyMiles) get standby priority over other Delta travelers.

Note that flying standby does not mean you’ll get bumped, just that you’re waiting for your seat assignment.

How Does the Standby List Work on Delta?

Each airline has its own policy when it comes to offering same-day itinerary changes. When you’re flying with Delta, you can get onto the Standby waiting list if you can’t get a Same-Day Confirmed flight, but the airline has its own terms and conditions to determine eligibility. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • You cannot use Same-Day Confirmed/Standby option for international flights, only for travel within the United States (incl. Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands) on Delta and Delta Connection flights departing on the same day.
  • Delta Basic Economy fares are not eligible for Same-Day Standby travel
  • Delta Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion Members may fly standby on any flight that departs at any time, as long as it departs on the same day as their original flight.
  • Delta Silver Medallion Members, General SkyMiles Members, and other Delta passengers have the option to fly Same-Day Standby for any flight with an earlier scheduled departure time than their original flight.
  • Same-Day/Standby changes from connecting to nonstop Delta flights are not eligible.
  • You cannot use the same-day change option for changes to your origin and/or destination airport. Changes between airports in the same city, like LaGuardia/JFK or O’Hare/Midway, are not available for Same-Day/Standby changes.
  • Delta SkyMiles members take priority over non-SkyMiles members
  • Delta Medallion members take priority over non-elite members as follows: Delta 360, Diamond Medallion, Platinum Medallion, Gold Medallion, and Silver Medallion.
  • Full-fare passengers will take priority over those with discount fare

What Does the Flight Standby List Mean?

Flying standby on Delta or on any other airline basically means you’re on a first come, first served waiting list for an empty seat on the plane that is expected to remain unoccupied. Essentially, flights that are already booked full will not have standby lists available. Delta passengers that cannot make a short-notice (w/in 24-hour) change to their itinerary via Same-Day Confirmed will be able to get on a standby list for another eligible flight on the same day as the original flight.

Is Delta Standby “First Come, First Served”?

Yes, and no. Typically, Delta standby lists are filled on a “first come, first served” basis, though there is some prioritizing based on elite memberships and other criteria. Also, note that at times you might not get OK’ed for the standby list until boarding is already complete.

Prioritizing for Delta Same-Day/Standby changes typically go as follows:

Does Standby Mean You Have a Seat?

Standby is the waiting list you’re placed on until you are assigned your seat. Everyone who bought their ticket as Basic Economy is on the standby list until they have their seat assigned. Flying standby doesn’t mean you’ll be bumped, just that you’re waiting for your seat assignment.

Why Did I Get Placed on Standby?

Standby typically just means you don’t have a confirmed reservation for a flight, like if you needed to change flights within 24 hours of your original departure time, and a Delta Same-Day Confirmed flight was not available.

How Does Standby Work?

For Delta domestic travelers (including to Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands), who are not flying Basic Economy, you can either change your ticket to another flight on the same day as your original flight with “Same-Day Confirmed,” or you can be placed on “Standby.” Standby essentially means that no Same-Day Confirmed flight changes were available, and if you’re eligible, you can go on the standby list for another flight (also on the same day). You will not necessarily get “bumped” from your flight, you’re just waiting to have your seat assigned.

Is it Free to Fly on Standby?

Many travelers wonder if you can fly standby for free, or at least save money by flying standby. Most airlines, including Delta, only offer standby seats to passengers who have already purchased tickets.

On Delta, for Same-Day Confirmed itinerary changes, if a seat is available in your original fare class, you can make your change for a  $75 fee. If a Same-Day Confirmed seat is unavailable, you can stand by for an available seat, and if a seat does become available, you will not pay a fee.

So, What Does “Standby List” Mean on Delta Airlines?

Delta Airlines passengers have the option for itinerary changes needed within 24 hours of their flight departure, with some limitations and eligibility conditions. As long as you’re flying domestically (including to Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands), and not flying Basic Economy, you can either change your ticket to another flight on the same day as your original flight with “Same-Day Confirmed,” or fly “Standby.”

Standby essentially means that no Same-Day Confirmed flight changes were available, and if you’re eligible, you can go on the standby list for another flight (also on the same day). Depending on your Delta Medallion membership, you may be able to schedule for a later flight than your original flight, but other eligible passengers will likely need to plan on changing to an earlier flight.

Delta Standby Policy: How To Get On Delta’s Standby & Upgrade List

Tips for navigating same day ticket changes and upgrades with Delta Airlines

Delta Same-Day Flight Changes

Are you flying with Delta, but aren’t sure if you will make your flight on time? Or do you just want to get home from a long week and jump on an earlier flight?

If so, Delta allows Same-Day Flight changes through two options: Same-Day Confirmed and Same-Day Standby.

This article explains the rules, fees, and eligibility requirements to fly standby and get an upgrade with Delta Airlines.

If you’re making a flight change within 24 hours of your originally scheduled departure time, Delta can help you with Same-Day Ticket changes. This is as long as you are flying within the United States, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands,

Same-Day Flight changes are only valid for certain types of tickets. Other tickets, such as Basic Economy fares and tickets for international travel, are not eligible for Same-Day Ticket changes.

If you are unsure about the kind of ticket you have and want to find out whether or not you are eligible for a Same-Day Ticket change, it’s best to check the terms and conditions of your ticket or get in touch with Delta directly.

Options for Same-Day Ticket Changes with Delta

If you are looking to make Same-Day Ticket changes , there are two options for you to choose from:

If a seat is available in your originally purchased fare class, you can change your ticket to a confirmed seat on a new flight.

The Same-Day Confirmed option is complimentary for Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion members of Delta. If you do not have this status and your ticket is eligible for the Same-Day Confirmed, you can pay the Same-Day Confirmed fee of $75.

Basic Economy fares are not eligible for same-day confirmed travel changes.

In case the Same-Day Confirmed option is not available, you may wait for a seat on an earlier flight than your original ticket. The Same-Day Standby ticket is a complimentary service offered to the traveler at no cost. Until you have been assigned a seat on an earlier flight, your original flight will remain confirmed.

Now let’s dig into the details of each standby option.

Same-Day Confirmed Rules

When you get a Same-Day Confirmed ticket, you’ll move to a confirmed seat on a new flight. Review the following rules before you make a same-day confirmed ticket change:

  • You can use the Same-Day Confirmed option for travel within the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Delta and Delta Connection flights. It is not available for international flights.
  • You may request a same-day flight change within 24 hours prior to the departure time of your original flights. However, changes are limited to flights departing on the same day as ticketed departure.
  • If you have a refundable ticket, you may be able to change your itinerary without a fee.
  • If you have a Main Cabin ticket, you can only stand by for a seat in the Main Cabin—not in First Class or another premium cabin.
  • If you have a premium cabin fare like Delta One, Delta Premium Select, or First Class, you may make a Same-Day confirmed change as long as a seat is available in the cabin purchased or a lower cabin.
  • If there are no seats available in Delta Comfort+, you may be eligible to make a Same-Day confirmed change in the Main Cabin seat if there is one available.
  • Origin and/or destination changes are not available for a Same-Day Confirmed change. Same-city/co-terminals (e.g. LaGuardia Airport to John F. Kennedy Airport) changes are not available for Same-Day Confirmed change.
  • Same-Day Confirmed changes from connection to nonstop flights are not permitted.
  • Basic Economy fares (E) are not eligible for Same-Day Confirmed travel changes, regardless of Medallion or other elite status.

For Silver Medallion Members, General SkyMiles Members, and non-members:

  • Same-Day Change Fee is $75 — if your requested flight is Same-Day Confirmed eligible.
  • Applicable Change Fee — These fees vary based on your ticket and applicable fare rules.

For Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion Members:

  • Same-Day Change Fee is waived — If the requested flight is eligible for Same-Day Confirmed, the fee will be waived.
  • Applicable Change Fee — These fees vary based on your ticket and its applicable fare rules.
  • Medallion Complimentary Upgrades do not transfer to your rebooked ticket.
  • The same-day travel program is subject to change, and the rules in effect on the date of travel will apply.
  • Seats or upgrades purchased for the original flight do not transfer to your rebooked ticket.

Same-Day Standby Rules

If a Same-Day Confirmed flight change is unavailable (or you don’t want to pay the fee), you may be eligible to fly on standby on a different flight. If you choose to fly “Same-Day Standby”, you will wait for an open seat on a different flight. Review the following rules before you apply for a Same-Day Standby flight:

  • Same-Day Standby is only offered if Same-Day Confirmed is not available.
  • You may request a same-day flight change within 24 hours prior to the departure time of your original flight; however, changes are limited to flights departing on the same day of ticketed departure.
  • Silver Medallion Members, General SkyMiles Members, and non-members may only fly Same-Day Standby for a flight that is earlier than their original flight.
  • Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion Members may standby for a flight at any time on the same day as their original flight.
  • Basic Economy fares (E) are not eligible for Same-Day Standby travel changes, regardless of Medallion or elite status.
  • You can use the Same-Day Standby option for travel within the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Delta and Delta Connection flights. It is not available for international flights.
  • Origin and/or destination changes are not available for a Same-Day Standby. Same-City/Co-terminals (e.g. LaGuardia Airport to John F. Kennedy Airport) changes are not available for a Same-Day Standby.
  • Same-Day Standby changes from connection to nonstop flights are not permitted.
  • Same-Day Standby is a complimentary service at no cost to you if you purchase Main Cabin or above…
  • Standby is not permitted to/from Canada.
  • Standby is permitted for multi-segment flights.
  • Customers must stand by for each individual flight segment.

All Same-Day Ticket changes can be made online, during check-in, or within the Fly Delta app. All changes are subject to availability.

Delta Same-Day Standby Scenarios

Here are the options for flying Delta standby when you miss your flight, need to leave early for a medical situation, or want to fly standby for a free flight with a buddy pass.

If for any reason that is your own fault, you miss your Delta Air flight, you can ask to be placed on standby as long as you are in the airport within two hours after the flight departure. You will most likely have to pay a fee (like the fare difference)—depending on the type of ticket you have or your level of membership in their rewards program.

Usually, gate and ticket agents decide how much you have to pay or if you have to pay at all. Even if you feel stressed because of your missed flight, be kind to and honest with them as it can help you save money on some fees and help you get on a flight right away.

If the missed flight is because of a canceled or delayed flight , Delta Airlines will do its best to confirm a seat for you on another flight. If the flights are already booked, you can opt to be placed on the standby list instead. Remember that they are listed according to priority, with the full fare and passengers with elite status or memberships before other discount passengers.

You might also want to chat with the customer service agents and gate or ticket agents and ask about your chances of securing a seat, especially if a full flight got delayed. It might be better to reschedule your trip than to wait without knowing if you will be able to board or not.

If you need to fly out for a medical emergency or the death of a family member, your best option is to purchase a Bereavement or Medical Emergency fare. These are not available online, so you will need to call Delta Reservations. Bereavement or Medical Emergency fares are competitive as they sometimes offer a more discounted rate than tickets still available at the last minute. They also give you more flexibility in case your travel plans change.

If the flight you are eyeing is sold out, they will place you on the standby list. If you arrive early, you may be able to increase your chances to board the flight you want. As priority goes, you’ll be behind passengers bumped off from an earlier flight, but above everyone else.

If you’re hoping to get an upgrade, you may not have that big a chance as the Bereavement or Medical Emergency fare isn’t so high on the upgrade list—unless you have Medallion status.

Delta Airlines employees can fly for free anywhere the airline flies using the “Delta Buddy Pass.” This perk extends to their parents, children, spouses, and domestic partners. Other family members and friends—non-dependent children travel companions, relatives, etc.—can purchase tickets at reduced rates. There may be some government or airport fees for international travel, but it is generally cheaper than buying a regular ticket.

delta employees can fly standby with a buddy pass

There’s a catch though. Anyone using the Delta Buddy Pass has to fly on standby — meaning there are no guaranteed seats. The Delta Buddy Pass also cannot be used for business, but only for personal or leisure travel.

If you plan to fly using a Delta Buddy Pass, you must check in at the airport kiosk or with a Delta agent. You can also contact Delta Reservations to find out if there are available seats.

Remember to dress and act appropriately. Because seating is subject to availability and standard Delta priority rules apply, if you are traveling with a large group, you may not be able to sit together. You may also not switch seats after departure, although flight attendants may ask you to change if necessary.

Delta Air no longer offers the ability to fly standby for most international flights. There are a few exceptions, however — flights to and from certain locations including the following:

  • Central America
  • The Caribbean

Delta doesn’t also allow you to fly standby for international upgrades. While there used to be complimentary international upgrades for elite SkyMiles members, these things no longer exist. If you want an upgrade when flying internationally, you’ll need to redeem miles or use a global upgrade certificate (if you have Diamond Medallion flyer status).

If you are looking for a great carry-on bag when flying on standby, I recommend the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Spinner. I have used this carry-on for years. It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds everything I need for shorter trips. Plus the spinner wheels make it very easy to get through the airport quickly and effortlessly.

If you know you are going to be flying on Standby, it’s always best to travel with only a carry-on!

Travelpro Maxlite 5 21" Carry-On Expandable Spinner

This carry-on bag has been sizer bin tested to accommodate overhead bin space on most major US airlines.

Case Dimensions:

  • H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in.

Note: If fully expanded it may not meet overhead bin size limits, so be careful to not overpack.

How to Standby for a Cabin Class Upgrade

Aside from having a standby list of passengers flying standby, Delta Airlines also has a list for passengers requesting upgrades. Generally, the order of the list is based on various factors, including the type of upgrade requested, the fare class purchased, frequent flier status, type of ticket, time of ticketing, time of check-in, and so on.

Upgrades for regular passengers or non-members of Delta’s SkyMiles frequent flier program are somewhat limited. It is, however, possible to get an upgrade from an economy fare ticket to a higher class service without paying the full price, although you will have to wait until 24 hours before or on the day of your flight to see if such an upgrade is available.

If you are a SkyMiles member but don’t have elite status, you can use the non-member upgrade options or miles to buy an upgrade.

You can also request same-day standby upgrades for a fee if there is still available space on your flight. The following specific flights and routes are the only ones eligible for upgrade standby status for regular passengers and non-elite SkyMiles members:

  • Within North America (except JFK-Lax, JFK-SEA, JFK-SFO)
  • Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands)
  • Los Cabos (Mexico)
  • Montego Bay (Jamaica)
  • Nassau (Bahamas)
  • Providenciales (Turks and Caicos)
  • San Juan (Puerto Rico)
  • St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands)
  • Between Atlanta and Costa Rica, St. Maarten, and St. Lucia
  • Between Cancun (Mexico) and Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Indianapolis, Memphis, and Minneapolis

The fees for availing standby for upgrades vary depending on the distance to be traveled and the fare class you booked. You can request an upgrade when you check in online or via an airport kiosk or at the Delta counter. Please note that, for some flights, you may not be able to request an upgrade until you arrive at the gate.

If you are a member of SkyMiles and do not have elite status with Delta (Gold, Platinum, or Diamond) you have two upgrade options: “Upgrade with Miles” and “Mileage Upgrade Awards.”

Upgrading using your miles allows you to upgrade your flight to, for example, first-class, by paying the difference in fare between your original and upgraded class through your miles (or you can pay for the upgrade – the miles upgrade will give you about $.01 per mile). International flights and Basic Economy (E) flights, however, are not eligible to use “Upgrade with Miles.”

Delta upgrade with miles

Delta’s Mileage Upgrade Awards can be used on both domestic and international flights. You have to call Delta Air Lines reservations 24 hours before your departure and make the request. If an award is not eligible when you make the request, you can request to be placed on the upgrade waitlist. Please note that the upgrade waitlist is different from the standby waitlist. Getting one does not affect the other, and your priority in the upgrade waitlist does not carry over to the airport standby waitlist.

Only certain fare classes are eligible for Mileage Upgrade Awards. You must be level K or higher (Y, B, M, S, H, or Q) for an upgrade for domestic flights. For international travel, only Y, B, and M fare classes are eligible for Mileage Upgrade Awards.

Medallion members, on the other hand, have unlimited automatic complimentary upgrades. Make sure that your reservation is associated with your SkyMiles frequent flier number on Delta to avail of the upgrades you want. You will automatically receive a complimentary upgrade request which will clear based on your elite status level, seat availability, original fare class purchase, and the time and date of the request.

Please note that the following routes are the only ones eligible for Medallion Complimentary Upgrades:

  • Within the United States (as long as they are sharing a border), except JFK and LAX or SFO
  • Between Hawaii and LAX, SEA, SFO, or SLC
  • Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Bermuda
  • Central America (excluding Delta One)
  • Northern South America (excluding Delta One)

Comfort+ is Delta’s option for those looking for a few perks while flying. You still fly in the main cabin, but at a step up from regular Economy class. Some perks you can get include the following:

  • Priority boarding
  • Dedicated overhead bin space
  • Seats at the front of the cabin
  • Extra legroom
  • More seat recline
  • Complimentary drinks on flights over 250 miles
  • Complimentary snacks on domestic flights over 900 miles
  • Complimentary meal service on most international flights
  • Sleep kits on international flights (between JFK and SFO or LAX)

Medallion members can also get complimentary upgrades to Comfort+ seating which is available on all Delta’s 2-cabin aircraft. Access to Comfort+ upgrades depends on the SkyMiles Medallion status level:

  • Silver members: 24 hours before departure
  • Gold members: 72 hours before departure
  • Platinum members: at booking
  • Diamond members: at booking

Some airlines’ standby lists are on a first-come, first-served basis. Meaning, that if you are the first to get listed, you are the first to fly when a seat becomes available. For Delta, their standby list for upgrades order of priority depends on your membership or flier status.

You are arranged according to your membership status when you ask to be placed on the standby list. Even if you are the first to come in, you will be bumped further down the list if those with elite flier status ask to be placed on the standby list after you.

Delta sits in the middle, charging an average of $15-plus for each flight that you'd like to select a seat for. The cost will vary depending on the type of ticket you book with the airline — which we'll discuss next.

How much is seat selection on Delta Air Lines? That will depend on the ticket type you’re purchasing, be it basic economy, main cabin, Premium Select (premium economy), first class or Delta One.

Basic economy

Basic economy tickets have the most restrictions of any Delta ticket, and this extends to seat selection. Those who book basic economy tickets won't be able to select seats; instead, a seat will be randomly assigned to each passenger after check-in. This includes families and groups who are traveling together — expect to be split up when booking a basic economy ticket.

If you reserve a basic economy ticket, it’s possible to purchase a specific seat starting seven days before departure. Pricing for this varies by trip and is priced by segment.

Main cabin seating, also known as regular economy, includes complimentary seat selection. As a main cabin customer, you also have the option to purchase an upgrade to preferred or Delta Comfort Plus seats while remaining an economy class passenger.

You can also book upgraded economy tickets with additional seat selection perks:

Main Cabin Preferred: Main Cabin Preferred seats are functionally the same as regular main cabin seats. The difference lies in the seat location; Main Cabin Preferred seats are typically window and aisle seats nearer to the front of the plane, plus exit rows. These are the least expensive upgrades from standard economy seating.

Comfort Plus: When available, a Delta Comfort Plus ticket can be purchased directly while booking and the price will include seat selection. The cost to upgrade is higher than for a preferred seat in main cabin. Comfort Plus features more legroom than main cabin and offers passengers dedicated overhead bins. In addition, Comfort Plus guests will receive complimentary beer and wine on all domestic and short-haul international flights.

Main cabin passengers can also choose to upgrade to a Comfort Plus seat either before or after purchasing their ticket.

Premium Select

Premium Select is Delta’s version of premium economy, with larger seats and better recline, two free checked bags, earlier boarding and premium extras. Those who book Premium Select can choose any seat within the cabin for no additional fee.

Delta One and first class

Both first class and Delta One ticket holders can choose any seat within their cabin for free. These spacious seats come with two free checked bags, premium snacks and meals, priority boarding, and a dedicated flight attendant.

Comfort Plus

Platinum and Diamond level elite members (the two highest tiers) can choose Comfort Plus seats shortly after ticketing for free. Mid-tier Gold members, meanwhile, will be able to select these seats starting 72 hours prior to departure, and low-level Silver members can pick from available Comfort Plus seats starting 24 hours before departure.

Delta elite members will also receive upgrades on select first class and Delta One flights depending on their elite status.

You can find Delta Air Lines seating without needing to book a flight. To do so, you’ll want to first search for your preferred route on Delta’s website. On the search results page, you’ll find a variety of flights from which to choose.

Each flight presents a seat map, which you can preview by selecting "Seats."

Once you’ve picked "Seats," you’ll be taken to a new page that shows a live preview of your aircraft’s seats.

You’ll also be able to view the seat map during the booking process. Once you’ve selected your flight, you’ll be taken to another page prompting you to pick a seat.

How do I choose my seat on Delta?

During booking

The process for reserving a Delta seat is fairly simple. As we mentioned above, you’ll be able to pick seats when booking your flights on the website; Delta will automatically prompt you to do so before checkout.

You may not be able to select seats on codeshare flights, which are operated by Delta’s partners . In this case, you’ll want to go directly to the other airlines’ webpage to manage your seat selection.

After booking

If you need to choose or alter your seat after you’ve booked your flight, go to "My Trips" on the Delta homepage.

If you’re logged in already, you’ll be able to view all the trips you have booked with Delta. You’ll find seat selection options by going down to the "Passenger Information" section.

Why Am I On Standby Delta? [Answered]

Flying in delta airlines for the first time on standby might be pretty confusing. You might be wondering what the standby system is, to begin with. Additional worries will race to you if you don’t know about the system in detail.

So you might ask why am I on standby delta?

Delta standby is when airline passengers lack confirmed flight reservations and hope to board if there are available seats. This situation can arise from overbooking or flexible tickets. Passengers are prioritized based on factors like fare class and frequent flyer status. Being on delta standby means waiting and potentially securing a seat based on availability, without a guaranteed spot on a specific flight

That’s the initial thought of our today’s consultation. Want to know more regarding delta standby? Then keep reading our post till the end.

Let’s dive in!

What Is Delta Standby Policy?

delta airline aircraft is shown in the picture

Source: istockphoto

Delta’s standby policy allows passengers to request same-day flight changes , subject to conditions. To qualify, you must have a confirmed ticket and certain fare types.

Standby requests can be made at the airport or online. Passengers with SkyMiles Medallion status may have better chances.

Highlights of the policy include a fee waiver for Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion members , while Silver Medallion members get a 50% discount. Basic Economy passengers are generally not eligible .

Same-day flight changes can involve a change in the departure time, same-day confirmed flights, or standby travel. Standby passengers may need to be flexible and prepared for multiple flights.

Standby requests can only be made for flights on the same day , and changes are not guaranteed. If you’re cleared, you’ll be assigned a seat shortly before departure, but if not, you’ll retain your original reservation.

Remember, Delta’s standby policy is subject to availability , so it’s essential to check the rules and eligibility for your specific ticket type before attempting a same-day change.

They’d have a standby list of the passengers. They’d also have seats remaining on the standby list with them. The seats get distributed by delta standby list priority. And that is the delta standby priority policy in a nutshell.

Bonus : Why is Delta FlyReady Not Working? : Issues and Solutions

How Does Delta Standby List Work?

Usually, when someone wants to change a ticket the airline looks for alternate flights. The request to change the ticket must be done within 24 hours .

If the airline finds alternate flights you’d have to pay $75 dollars . However, it’s nothing like the non-commissionable rate at Marriott . It is to change the ticket of your flight. That’s the case when alternate flights are available.

If not then your name will be put on the standby list for free. Note that the request to change flight must be within the 24-hour mark .

During this time you can exchange seats on the delta website as well. If any seat gets available they’ll call for you. So it’s best to stay prepared at any moment .

This service isn’t applicable for basic economy class . All other classes are provided with the standby service. The service rule applies differently for different class members.

The non-members, general SkyMiles, and silver medallion members have to book for earlier flights. But platinum, gold, or diamond medallion members can choose flights from any time .

What To Do If You Are On The Standby List?

If your name is on the standby list , there are several steps to follow. Firstly, arrive at the airport well in advance of your desired flight’s departure time. Check-in as early as possible to maximize your chances of being accommodated, as the availability of seats may change, and earlier check-ins often receive priority.

Secondly, it’s important to be prepared and flexible. Standby travel means your seating is uncertain , and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to board your intended flight. Be open to the possibility of traveling on a different flight, and plan accordingly.

Furthermore, be aware of any applicable fees and conditions associated with standby travel. For instance, fees may apply for same-day flight changes , and these charges can vary depending on your fare class and Medallion status. Basic Economy passengers, in particular, may face additional costs, so it’s crucial to understand the terms and conditions specific to your ticket.

But first thing first, always keep additional plans when you’re on the standby list. It’s pretty similar to economy milesaver than economy anytime because your flight seat is about to be changed at any moment.

The ticket you have booked will let you in on another flight if necessary. The ticket will be valid for 24 hours after the booking. So you’ll be able to request a stand-by flight within 24 hours.

How To Get On Delta Standby List?

delta standby list for seat assignment

If this sounds complex you can always get help from delta airlines customer service . Hopefully, this answers all your queries about delta’s standby policy.

Here we have gathered some commonly asked questions regarding today’s matter. Hope this comes to your help.

What’s the cost of a standby ticket?

Standby ticket cost ranges from $25 to $100. The cost range is influenced by two factors. One is the flight itself. Another is your personal connection to the airline. If you have anyone you know working on the airline you may secure a discount.

Who gets priority on the standby list?

People who have paid the full fare get priority over others on the standby list. Different airlines have different priority systems. The commuting flight crews also get priority on standby. As for normal standby passengers, people who check in first get called earlier.

How to get on delta standby upgrade?

You can apply for a delta standby upgrade from your fly delta app. But it must have the latest version on your device. Go to the app and look for your reservation under “my trips”. Request for delta comfort+upgrade. Now, check request upgrade and only upgrade options.

What are standby airline tickets?

The definition of a standby ticket has changed over time. Before, a standby ticket used to mean a cheap ticket to fly on the empty seats. But the system has changed. Now, getting standby means that you’ve already bought a ticket. But I want an earlier or later flight.

Does Delta offer vouchers on an overbooked flight?

Yes, a voucher is offered to passengers from Delta who voluntarily decide to be on standby. Delta sometimes overbooks their flight. They offer a dollar value travel voucher to the passengers who voluntarily go standby. Or the passengers may choose to get compensation from them.

Final Words

That was all from us about why am I on standby delta ? Hopefully, you’ve cleared your confusion by today’s discussion.

If you face any complexities feel free to get help from airline customer service. All airline industries have scheduling issues. So don’t be flustered to get help.

Dave, there is no such thing as fine print on screen, you can change the font size on your computer if you find it difficult to read.

The point is you need to look at the different fare types and what you get for that fare and then make your purchasing decision, you can't just buy the cheapest ticket and hope it gives the benefits of the more expensive onre.

The people who don't read the fine print or understand what they are booking then cry 'scam' also don't like it when the reality is pointed out to them.

Looks like some one we hear from in the news

When the airline offers tiered pricing for a reason so it is up to the buyer to make an informed decision

And when one posts here members have to point out the obvious facts. It is not just a place to agree with and placate a poster who is here just to complain

I agree with you on the definition of standby, yet both of them, OP Emily and Dave said standby, Emily even put quotes around it. So it must be a term Delta is using. Now what does Delta mean by "standby"? ha.

delta standby list for seat assignment

Not only are the DL Basic Economy fare details provided in decent sized print, but when making a booking one is presented with a box with details of what's included in the fare. At the botttom of the box in all caps the purchaser is asked 'do you want to continue with your selection?' and must tick a box saying 'I agree to these restrictions' before continuing to complete the booking.

No DaveJ you're completely wrong. In fact the opposite is true. Delta specifically introduced >lower priced< tickets with those restrictions (no advance seat selection, no changes at all) to lure people away from the likes of Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant. And you still get a much better service from Delta on those fares than the ultra cheapo carriers. United and American are expected to follow suit shortly.

And as Kyshel and TravellerPlus point out there's no fine print. There's a whopping great box that appears when you select that fare that tells you those restrictions, and you have to agree to those to get any further in the booking process. Did you not read that between your click click click click Buy?

And frankly to accuse those who pointed out those >facts< as "insulting strangers for fun" is an insult in itself.

" Flights were all booked a few months ago for the main cabin and seats were allocated on my outward flight "

Are you saying that you havent been allocated seats for your inward leg but everything is fine for your outward leg? What is the routes? Are they transatlantic?

I'd call delta and ask if it were me...

It sounds like you didn't pick all your seats at that time for some reason?

Actually , as a solo traveler, I was once bumped up to First Class/Buisiness Class on Delta(whatever they call it) on a trans atlantic flight so that was a good bump!!

You may have a nice surprise at the airport!

Not sure what list you are looking at? Have you been told you are on "Stand By" or are you just on a list of checked in passengers who are awaiting a seat assignment? Lots of different lists....

delta standby list for seat assignment

You were likely put there as being HK--Hold/Confirmed but with no seat assignment. Do you have E class ticket?

Please call DL and ask, then keep us in the loop. Someone may need that advice later.

I like Riff's take on this!

I was sitting at JFK and a Delta employee came over to me and asked if I was alone.

When I said Yes, she asked for my boarding pass(not saying another word).

I gave it to her and she soon came back with another one for First Class!!

It was almost tooooo nice! I like to nap on my overnight flights to Europe but there was so much food and dessert offered that I got little chance to sleep!!

I keep hoping it happens again but not so far!!

However the fact that you're calling it "standby" is concerning. Standby is usually when you don't have a confirmed reservation for a flight , like if you were on a later flight and were trying to get on an earlier one. if you are really standby, then you need to call Delta to find out what's going on.

Yah that standby part is strange. Perhaps a frequent DL flyer can explain that
