How to Write a Great Research Paper

Even great research paper topics won't give you a great research paper if you don't hone your topic before and during the writing process. Follow these three tips to turn good research paper topics into great papers.

#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early

Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!

As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."

If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."

#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research

Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.

#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing

You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!

Get most of your research on your good research topics done before you begin writing. Then use the research you've collected to create a rough outline of what your paper will cover and the key points you're going to make. This will help keep your paper clear and organized, and it'll ensure you have enough research to produce a strong paper.

1. Taste the Rainbow

Teach your students about diffusion while creating a beautiful and tasty rainbow! Tip: Have extra Skittles on hand so your class can eat a few!

25 Science Topics for Elementary School

Elementary science has the potential for wonder. Young children are naturally curious, and science is a great way to satisfy that curiosity.  And if it’s done right, elementary school science can lay the foundation for science understanding throughout life. There are just a few basic principles that need to be stressed over and over without sucking the fun out of the process.

While we all agree that science is the way for kids to get answers to pressing questions they wonder about, teachers also know that there are underlying skills for focus, as well. Good science lessons and activities will rely on building communication skills, developing collaboration, sharpening the process of inquiry, and designing flexible and creative ways to observe or to solve problems.

At the heart of all science is the Scientific Method, and no matter how young or old young scientists may be, they can learn through the Scientific Method if we teachers and parents are mindful to set good examples. To refresh your memory, the Scientific Method has seven steps:

  • Make an observation or ask a question. Kids do this naturally; they may just need a nudge to notice and write it down.
  • Research. With their insatiable desire to learn, this step comes naturally too. Books, magazines, the internet, television and videos are all great resources to build background knowledge about the topic at hand.
  • Generate a hypothesis. This step isn’t hard, either! Help the young kids take a guess about what will happen or what causes what they are wondering about. Be sure to write this down, too.
  • Conduct tests and experiments. Kids really shine at this one. Help them find ways to check their hypothesis. How can they set up an event that will answer their question?
  • Analyze the data. This step may or may not be formalized, but be sure to point it out each time your child is “doing science.” Discuss their observations. Encourage them to measure and count and otherwise record the outcomes, then make simple graphs or tables to show what happened. Point out that organizing data helps everyone see exactly what happened.
  • Report on the conclusions. Again, this can be as formal as you like, but make sure to point out this step when it happens. Maybe you have a discussion about the experiment. Maybe you make a drawing of it. Perhaps you share the results with friends or family.
  • Make a new question or observation. If science is done right, each experience will lead to a new set of questions so you have a perpetual cycle of learning.

Here are some jumping-off points to “do science” in a big way with your elementary student. Feel free to tweak and modify and take side trips. Anything your child wants to learn about is fair game for science!

They all serve to change the amount of work or energy needed to get a task accomplished. Kids can experiment to find out exactly how much the simple machines make work more efficient, and they can put them together in different combinations to accomplish tasks.   • Electricity: We use electricity every single day, yet even most adults can have trouble explaining how it works and why it’s so useful.   • Inventions/Inventors: Your kids can pick nearly any machine, item, or modern convenience, and there was an inventor (or more than one inventor) that made it all possible. And once kids understand that all of these things were created in someone’s mind, they may just get creative, too!   • Computers: Computers are a huge part of our everyday lives, and it’s important to help kids understand how they operate. Meditation can wipe away the day's stress, bringing with it inner peace. See how you can easily learn to practice meditation whenever you need it most.

If stress has you anxious, tense and worried, you might try meditation. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can help restore your calm and inner peace.

Anyone can practice meditation. It's simple and doesn't cost much. And you don't need any special equipment.

You can practice meditation wherever you are. You can meditate when you're out for a walk, riding the bus, waiting at the doctor's office or even in the middle of a business meeting.

Understanding meditation

Meditation has been around for thousands of years. Early meditation was meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, meditation is most often used to relax and lower stress.

Meditation is a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation can help you relax deeply and calm your mind.

During meditation, you focus on one thing. You get rid of the stream of thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. This process can lead to better physical and emotional well-being.

Benefits of meditation

Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit your emotional well-being and your overall health. You also can use it to relax and cope with stress by focusing on something that calms you. Meditation can help you learn to stay centered and keep inner peace.

These benefits don't end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help take you more calmly through your day. And meditation may help you manage symptoms of some medical conditions.

Meditation and emotional and physical well-being

When you meditate, you may clear away the information overload that builds up every day and contributes to your stress.

The emotional and physical benefits of meditation can include:

  • Giving you a new way to look at things that cause stress.
  • Building skills to manage your stress.
  • Making you more self-aware.
  • Focusing on the present.
  • Reducing negative feelings.
  • Helping you be more creative.
  • Helping you be more patient.
  • Lowering resting heart rate.
  • Lowering resting blood pressure.
  • Helping you sleep better.

Meditation and illness

Meditation also might help if you have a medical condition. This is most often true if you have a condition that stress makes worse.

A lot of research shows that meditation is good for health. But some experts believe there's not enough research to prove that meditation helps.

With that in mind, some research suggests that meditation may help people manage symptoms of conditions such as:

  • Chronic pain.
  • Depression.
  • Heart disease.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Tension headaches.

Be sure to talk to your healthcare professional about the pros and cons of using meditation if you have any of these or other health conditions. Sometimes, meditation might worsen symptoms linked to some mental health conditions.

Meditation doesn't replace medical treatment. But it may help to add it to other treatments.

Types of meditation

Meditation is an umbrella term for the many ways to get to a relaxed state. There are many types of meditation and ways to relax that use parts of meditation. All share the same goal of gaining inner peace.

Ways to meditate can include:

Guided meditation. This is sometimes called guided imagery or visualization. With this method of meditation, you form mental images of places or things that help you relax.

You try to use as many senses as you can. These include things you can smell, see, hear and feel. You may be led through this process by a guide or teacher.

  • Mantra meditation. In this type of meditation, you repeat a calming word, thought or phrase to keep out unwanted thoughts.

Mindfulness meditation. This type of meditation is based on being mindful. This means being more aware of the present.

In mindfulness meditation, you focus on one thing, such as the flow of your breath. You can notice your thoughts and feelings. But let them pass without judging them.

  • Qigong. This practice most often combines meditation, relaxation, movement and breathing exercises to restore and maintain balance. Qigong (CHEE-gung) is part of Chinese medicine.
  • Tai chi. This is a form of gentle Chinese martial arts training. In tai chi (TIE-CHEE), you do a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful way. And you do deep breathing with the movements.
  • Yoga. You do a series of postures with controlled breathing. This helps give you a more flexible body and a calm mind. To do the poses, you need to balance and focus. That helps you to focus less on your busy day and more on the moment.

Parts of meditation

Each type of meditation may include certain features to help you meditate. These may vary depending on whose guidance you follow or who's teaching a class. Some of the most common features in meditation include:

Focused attention. Focusing your attention is one of the most important elements of meditation.

Focusing your attention is what helps free your mind from the many things that cause stress and worry. You can focus your attention on things such as a certain object, an image, a mantra or even your breathing.

  • Relaxed breathing. This technique involves deep, even-paced breathing using the muscle between your chest and your belly, called the diaphragm muscle, to expand your lungs. The purpose is to slow your breathing, take in more oxygen, and reduce the use of shoulder, neck and upper chest muscles while breathing so that you breathe better.

A quiet setting. If you're a beginner, meditation may be easier if you're in a quiet spot. Aim to have fewer things that can distract you, including no television, computers or cellphones.

As you get more skilled at meditation, you may be able to do it anywhere. This includes high-stress places, such as a traffic jam, a stressful work meeting or a long line at the grocery store. This is when you can get the most out of meditation.

  • A comfortable position. You can practice meditation whether you're sitting, lying down, walking, or in other positions or activities. Just try to be comfortable so that you can get the most out of your meditation. Aim to keep good posture during meditation.
  • Open attitude. Let thoughts pass through your mind without judging them.

Everyday ways to practice meditation

Don't let the thought of meditating the "right" way add to your stress. If you choose to, you can attend special meditation centers or group classes led by trained instructors. But you also can practice meditation easily on your own. There are apps to use too.

And you can make meditation as formal or informal as you like. Some people build meditation into their daily routine. For example, they may start and end each day with an hour of meditation. But all you really need is a few minutes a day for meditation.

Here are some ways you can practice meditation on your own, whenever you choose:

Breathe deeply. This is good for beginners because breathing is a natural function.

Focus all your attention on your breathing. Feel your breath and listen to it as you inhale and exhale through your nostrils. Breathe deeply and slowly. When your mind wanders, gently return your focus to your breathing.

Scan your body. When using this technique, focus attention on each part of your body. Become aware of how your body feels. That might be pain, tension, warmth or relaxation.

Mix body scanning with breathing exercises and think about breathing heat or relaxation into and out of the parts of your body.

  • Repeat a mantra. You can create your own mantra. It can be religious or not. Examples of religious mantras include the Jesus Prayer in the Christian tradition, the holy name of God in Judaism, or the om mantra of Hinduism, Buddhism and other Eastern religions.

Walk and meditate. Meditating while walking is a good and healthy way to relax. You can use this technique anywhere you're walking, such as in a forest, on a city sidewalk or at the mall.

When you use this method, slow your walking pace so that you can focus on each movement of your legs or feet. Don't focus on where you're going. Focus on your legs and feet. Repeat action words in your mind such as "lifting," "moving" and "placing" as you lift each foot, move your leg forward and place your foot on the ground. Focus on the sights, sounds and smells around you.

Pray. Prayer is the best known and most widely used type of meditation. Spoken and written prayers are found in most faith traditions.

You can pray using your own words or read prayers written by others. Check the self-help section of your local bookstore for examples. Talk with your rabbi, priest, pastor or other spiritual leader about possible resources.

Read and reflect. Many people report that they benefit from reading poems or sacred texts and taking a few moments to think about their meaning.

You also can listen to sacred music, spoken words, or any music that relaxes or inspires you. You may want to write your thoughts in a journal or discuss them with a friend or spiritual leader.

  • Focus your love and kindness. In this type of meditation, you think of others with feelings of love, compassion and kindness. This can help increase how connected you feel to others.

Building your meditation skills

Don't judge how you meditate. That can increase your stress. Meditation takes practice.

It's common for your mind to wander during meditation, no matter how long you've been practicing meditation. If you're meditating to calm your mind and your mind wanders, slowly return to what you're focusing on.

Try out ways to meditate to find out what types of meditation work best for you and what you enjoy doing. Adapt meditation to your needs as you go. Remember, there's no right way or wrong way to meditate. What matters is that meditation helps you reduce your stress and feel better overall.

New machine learning algorithm promises advances in computing

Digital twin models may enhance future autonomous systems.

Systems controlled by next-generation computing algorithms could give rise to better and more efficient machine learning products, a new study suggests.

Using machine learning tools to create a digital twin, or a virtual copy, of an electronic circuit that exhibits chaotic behavior, researchers found that they were successful at predicting how it would behave and using that information to control it.

Many everyday devices, like thermostats and cruise control, utilize linear controllers -- which use simple rules to direct a system to a desired value. Thermostats, for example, employ such rules to determine how much to heat or cool a space based on the difference between the current and desired temperatures.

Yet because of how straightforward these algorithms are, they struggle to control systems that display complex behavior, like chaos.

As a result, advanced devices like self-driving cars and aircraft often rely on machine learning-based controllers, which use intricate networks to learn the optimal control algorithm needed to best operate. However, these algorithms have significant drawbacks, the most demanding of which is that they can be extremely challenging and computationally expensive to implement.

Now, having access to an efficient digital twin is likely to have a sweeping impact on how scientists develop future autonomous technologies, said Robert Kent, lead author of the study and a graduate student in physics at The Ohio State University.

"The problem with most machine learning-based controllers is that they use a lot of energy or power and they take a long time to evaluate," said Kent. "Developing traditional controllers for them has also been difficult because chaotic systems are extremely sensitive to small changes."

These issues, he said, are critical in situations where milliseconds can make a difference between life and death, such as when self-driving vehicles must decide to brake to prevent an accident.

The study was published recently in Nature Communications.

Compact enough to fit on an inexpensive computer chip capable of balancing on your fingertip and able to run without an internet connection, the team's digital twin was built to optimize a controller's efficiency and performance, which researchers found resulted in a reduction of power consumption. It achieves this quite easily, mainly because it was trained using a type of machine learning approach called reservoir computing.

"The great thing about the machine learning architecture we used is that it's very good at learning the behavior of systems that evolve in time," Kent said. "It's inspired by how connections spark in the human brain."

Although similarly sized computer chips have been used in devices like smart fridges, according to the study, this novel computing ability makes the new model especially well-equipped to handle dynamic systems such as self-driving vehicles as well as heart monitors, which must be able to quickly adapt to a patient's heartbeat.

"Big machine learning models have to consume lots of power to crunch data and come out with the right parameters, whereas our model and training is so extremely simple that you could have systems learning on the fly," he said.

To test this theory, researchers directed their model to complete complex control tasks and compared its results to those from previous control techniques. The study revealed that their approach achieved a higher accuracy at the tasks than its linear counterpart and is significantly less computationally complex than a previous machine learning-based controller.

"The increase in accuracy was pretty significant in some cases," said Kent. Though the outcome showed that their algorithm does require more energy than a linear controller to operate, this tradeoff means that when it is powered up, the team's model lasts longer and is considerably more efficient than current machine learning-based controllers on the market.

"People will find good use out of it just based on how efficient it is," Kent said. "You can implement it on pretty much any platform and it's very simple to understand." The algorithm was recently made available to scientists.

Outside of inspiring potential advances in engineering, there's also an equally important economic and environmental incentive for creating more power-friendly algorithms, said Kent.

As society becomes more dependent on computers and AI for nearly all aspects of daily life, demand for data centers is soaring, leading many experts to worry over digital systems' enormous power appetite and what future industries will need to do to keep up with it.

And because building these data centers as well as large-scale computing experiments can generate a large carbon footprint, scientists are looking for ways to curb carbon emissions from this technology.

To advance their results, future work will likely be steered toward training the model to explore other applications like quantum information processing, Kent said. In the meantime, he expects that these new elements will reach far into the scientific community.

"Not enough people know about these types of algorithms in the industry and engineering, and one of the big goals of this project is to get more people to learn about them," said Kent. "This work is a great first step toward reaching that potential."

  • National Academics of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Issues Report on Inclusion of Pregnant and Lactating Persons in Clinical Research

Last month, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (“NASEM”) issued a report discussing the inclusion of pregnant and lactating people in clinical research and the health impacts of inadequate data from research involving this subpopulation. Titled “Advancing Clinical Research with Pregnant and Lactating Persons: Overcoming Real and Perceived Liability Risks,” the report came as a response to Congress calling upon NASEM to examine the real and perceived prevalence of legal liability resulting from including these research subjects in clinical trials. Overall, the report concluded that legal liability for including pregnant and lactating persons in research is very limited, but that perceptions of potential liability and a lack of explicit guidance for including this population safely have created real barriers to their inclusion.  In response, the report provides recommended actions for Congress, the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), the National Institutes of Health (“NIH”), and the Office of Human Research Protections (“OHRP”) to take to enhance the inclusion of this population in clinical trials, thereby enhancing data around the safety and efficacy of approved drug products for pregnant and lactating persons.  Study sponsors and institutions conducting research should continue to monitor developments in this area, including guidance from FDA.

Following the approval of a drug and its introduction to the market, inadequate data from pregnant and lactating research participants can lead to a variety of health risks. First, providers are left to prescribe medications without having adequate data about dosage, efficacy, and safety for this unique population. Second, some pregnant or lactating individuals choose to forego medication due to uncertainty of the medication’s impact on the fetus or the nursing child. NASEM notes that this is of heightened importance given that 70% of pregnant persons and at least 50% of lactating persons take medications, many for chronic conditions. Without adequate pregnancy or lactation data available in controlled clinical studies, patients and their providers are often left to individually assess the clinical benefit and risk associated with any particular medication.

The report’s authors were charged with evaluating the risk of legal liability for sponsors when pregnant and lactating persons are included in clinical trials.  In doing so, the authors argue that risk of legal liability is greater when excluding pregnant and lactating persons in research compared to including the population with protective safety measures. The historical exclusion of pregnant and lactating patients has, in effect, led to these patients taking medications for which there is insufficient safety and efficacy evidence. According to the report, if this population were safely included in clinical studies, legal and health risks would diminish because the impacts of medications could be measured within a small study population. This realization gave rise to Congress authorizing the creation of a Task Force on Research Specific to Pregnant and Lactating Women (the “PRGLAC”) in 2016 to evaluate gaps in knowledge regarding safe and effective therapies for this population. The PRGLAC released a report in 2018, revealing that possibility and fear of legal liability is often a root cause of excluding pregnant and lactating women in clinical research. 

Report Findings on Liability 

The report includes a review of case law to determine (i) the prevalence of liability cases stemming from harm to pregnant and lactating research participants and (ii) the harm to pregnant and lactating patients who take a drug after it has been approved. Generally, the report found there were no legal liability claims from the involvement of pregnant and lactating persons in clinical trials for pre-market medications since 1962, the year the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was granted authority to require proof of safety and efficacy of products before going to market. However, the report indicated there have been numerous cases arising from the use of post-market drugs by pregnant and lactating patients. We believe these findings may be somewhat limited. Given most clinical studies categorically exclude pregnant and lactating individuals, the number of potential claims able to be filed is very low. 

Report Recommendations 

The report provides nine recommendations for addressing the inclusion of pregnant and lactating persons in clinical research. We provide a summary of NASEM’s recommendations, specifically highlighting those we find most realistic and effective, below. 

1. FDA Regulations and Guidance 

The report proposes that FDA revise guidance to set forth its expectation that pregnant and lactating persons be included early in studies, no later than the end of Phase III, for products expected to be used by these populations following approval. Among other things, the report proposes that FDA provide study designs, safeguards, and product-specific monitoring expected for conducting studies with this population.  Such standards may help to minimize potential harm to research participants and thereby reduce the potential for liability from adverse outcomes. 

Additionally, the report calls on FDA to require the inclusion of pregnant and lactating persons in diversity action plans when a drug is anticipated to be used in this population.  Our FDA colleagues have previously covered diversity action plans in a previous post . The regulated community eagerly awaits further guidance from FDA on the issue.

2. OHRP Guidance 

The report suggests that OHRP issue clarifying guidance targeted at clinical researchers, institutional review boards, and data and safety monitoring boards. Specifically, the authors recommend guidance on the definitions of “minimal risk” and “additional safeguards” in existing regulations governing additional protections for pregnant women, fetuses, and neonates in research. Additionally, they propose guidance include frequently asked questions to assist researchers in assessing risk and justifications for inclusion of pregnant and lactating research subjects.  As the authors acknowledge, harmonizing OHRP and FDA guidance on the standards for review by IRBs will be critical in ensuring that the regulated community has a consistent set of standards and guidance to follow.  

3. Federal Legislation 

The report calls upon Congress to pass new legislation to incentivize manufacturers to include pregnant and lactating participants in research.  In doing so, the authors believe any proposed legislation should be modeled on the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act  and the Pediatric Research Equity Act . To address the lack of incentivization by manufacturers to conduct studies in these populations, legislation could offer manufacturers extended market or data exclusivity, as well as tax breaks.  Finally, the authors propose Congress enact legislation granting FDA the authority to require research related to the use of drugs, biologics, vaccines, and devices in pregnant and lactating women.

4. Action from NIH 

Separate from incentives for manufacturers, the report calls upon the NIH to prioritize research that includes this subpopulation, developing priority lists of approved medicinal products that stand to benefit most from further research.  Moreover, the authors encourage the NIH and other federal agencies cover the cost of clinical trial insurance for federally funded studies that include pregnant and lactating persons in the trial population, suggesting that the additional expense should not be included in the NIH cap for direct costs for grant awards. Covering the expense of clinical trial insurance could both increase the willingness of institutions to conduct research in this population, without significant financial risk to the institution, and address ethical concerns around the availability of compensation for research harms and the equitable provision of that compensation. 

5. Protecting privacy through certificates of confidentiality 

Lastly, the report proposes researchers utilize certificates of confidentiality to provide greater privacy protections for this population’s research data.  In the aftermath of  the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision and the continued passage of restrictive abortion laws at the state level, researchers have raised a number of concerns regarding the collection of pregnancy-related information from research subjects. Certificates of confidentiality issued by NIH prohibit identifiable, sensitive research information from being accessed to anyone outside of the research study. While certificates of confidentiality are automatically granted for federally funded research, researchers conducting studies with non-federal funding sources can also apply to the NIH for a certificate.

Intervention in Navajo Nation boosts uptake for heart failure drugs by 53%

A team led by LDI senior fellow and Perelman School of Medicine faculty member Lauren Eberly at a Navajo Nation hospital in New Mexico has developed a simple intervention that increased the uptake of guideline-directed heart failure therapy drugs by 53%. Titled "Telephone-Based Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy Optimization in Navajo Nation: The Hózhó Randomized Clinical Trial," the study is published in the April issue of JAMA Internal Medicine .

"We found a 53% increase in the uptake of guideline-directed medical therapy to be a very significant effect," said Eberly. "In some ways, the magnitude of the effect was surprising, but in many ways, it was not surprising in how it speaks to the importance of designing an intervention that centers the community perspective and needs."

Part of an Indian Health Service (IHS) Innovations Award supported by the IHS headquarters Office of Quality, the study was done at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in New Mexico. The tested intervention was built around a telehealth-based strategy for remote initiation and titration of appropriate guideline-directed drug therapies for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. That means their heart was pumping insufficient amounts of blood in relation to their body's minimal needs.

High rates of heart failure

"Heart failure is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for our patient population in Eastern Navajo Nation," said Eberly. "Unfortunately, the cardiovascular health of the American Indian and Alaska Native population has really been under prioritized and is severely understudied. Therefore, there's really a paucity of data regarding cardiovascular disease burden and outcomes in this population."

"From some of our prior work, we know that among elderly American Indian and Alaska Native patients with Medicare nationally, the prevalence of heart failure is nearly 30%," Eberly continued. "That's incredibly high. Prior studies of these same groups also showed the incidence of coronary artery disease, which is a major cause of heart failure, is double that of other racial groups in the United States."

In Navajo Nation, overall health issues are compounded by the fact that many residential areas lack electricity or running water and are located along remote rural roads that are often impassable in winter.

The goal of the IHS Innovations Award study was to identify and address the major barriers to heart failure care throughout the Eastern section of the larger Navajo reservation that sprawls across 27,000 square miles of New Mexico, Arizona and Utah and is home to 167,000 people.

Racial inequities

"The background of our work was that guideline-directed medical therapy for heart failure saves lives and really improves quality of life for patients," said Eberly. "However, nationally, these medicines are really underutilized, and we know that racial inequities in their use have been well documented. There's also really been a paucity of efforts designed specifically to improve uptake of these therapies for racially marginalized patient groups, and particularly for American Indian patients."

In close collaboration with the Navajo community and clinicians, the research team determined that the clinical barriers to the uptake of recommended heart failure therapies were clinical burden, time constraints , lack of comfort with newer heart failure therapies, and lack of comfort with newer clinical guidelines.

The main patient barriers to treatment were transportation and clinician availability.

Limited broadband

"We worked with patients and community advisors to design a telehealth model in a reservation environment where there is limited broadband," said Eberly. "Phone calls were really the optimal telehealth modality."

The intervention was simple and targeted patients who had previously received an echocardiogram estimate of their heart pumping function. They would come into the hospital to pick up a blood pressure cuff.

Research team members would review their medicine regimen to identify and prescribe any missing drug therapy over the phone. Over the next month, the patient would be contacted by phone multiple times at home for blood pressure readings that would be used to adjust the drug dosage over the phone. The goal was to optimize the patient's heart failure regimen by the end of 30 days.

Aside from the greatly increased use of guideline-directed therapy in the study group, the research found that the telehealth intervention also reduced the rate of the participants' heart failure hospitalizations.

Combat structural racism

"Our strategy leveraged the electronic health record on a health system level to identify patients not receiving appropriate therapy, and subsequently optimize therapy without relying on in-person visits for specialty care," said Eberly. "We believe that such models can advance equity and combat structural racism in cardiovascular care."

Eberly, a staff cardiologist at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Penn Medicine Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and a resident in the Penn Global Health Equities Track program that nurtures and trains health professionals to focus their careers on addressing health disparities domestically or globally.

"Back when I was raised in New Mexico, I saw firsthand the impact of poverty on health," Eberly explained. "I was drawn to medicine because I saw it could be an incredible tool to advance justice."

She has previously served with Partners in Health in Rwanda and Liberia, assisting with the implementation of nurse-driven care delivery models for noncommunicable diseases, with a special focus on heart failure.

Eberly earned her MD at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and her MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health.
