Cricket Match Essay for Students in English - Essay Format and Samples

Cricket is an immensely popular bat-and-ball game. It is played and enjoyed by people all across the globe. A match of cricket is played between players of two teams having eleven players each. Professionally, a match of cricket is played on a field that has a 20-meter pitch in its centre with one wicket of three stumps on each end. In this essay on cricket matches, the various forms and how they are played in matches of cricket are discussed.

A Paragraph on Cricket Match

The paragraph on a cricket match must include that it is enjoyed and loved by numerous people across the world. The professional players of cricket are adored and idolized by many fans and aspiring cricketers worldwide. The popularity of cricket is especially prevalent in countries with national cricket teams such as India, Australia, England, West Indies, etc.

History of Cricket

A paragraph of a cricket match will be incomplete without its history. Cricket had its beginning in the late 16th century south-east England. Afterwards, cricket became England’s national sport in the 18th century and has its global development across the 19th and 20th centuries. The international matches of cricket started in 1844. Cricket is now considered the second most recognized spectacle in the world, after soccer.

Some Renowned Cricketers and Their Contributions

Paragraph on Some renowned cricketers and their contributions should talk about cricketers of different times and eras. Initially, cricket was a sport dominated by players from British countries and their colonies. Back then famous cricketers were Don Bradman, Jack Hobbs, Jim Laker, and many more. Don Bradman continues to hold the record of highest average of 99.9 in a test match. Jim Laker was the first player to capture all 10 wickets in an inning in a test match and also capture 19 wickets in an inning.

In contemporary times legacy has been continued by young players of independent countries which were once British colonies. Here India has performed remarkably. Indian players such as Suni Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and many more have left their mark. Gavaskar was the first cricketer to score 10000 runs in test cricket and he also broke Don Bradman’s record of 29 centuries. Kapil dev on the other hand never bowled a no-ball. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record of 51 centuries in test cricket.

Cricketers like these keep the spirit of sportsmanship alive and continue to maintain the status of this noble sport as a “Gentleman’s Game”.

An English Essay Cricket Match Formats

In this part of the essay on cricket matches, the formats are going to be discussed:

Test Cricket

It is the form of cricket that has the longest duration and is generally considered the highest standard in the game of cricket. Here, between the two teams, each team plays a match of two innings and one single match usually lasts up to five days. It is like a trial of levels of endurance among teams and their abilities. Australia currently holds the top rank in the ICC Test Championship.

One Day International (ODI) Cricket

The ODI is the next form in this cricket match essay in English. Here, the overs of the match are limited. ODIs are played between two international teams, each playing for 50 overs. One such example of an ODI match in cricket is the Cricket World Cup, which is generally held once in four years. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most runs and centuries in the history of ODI cricket with 18,426 runs made.

Twenty 20 Cricket (T20)

It is a shortened format of a cricket match. Professionally, it was first introduced in 2003 by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board). In a match of T20 cricket, each team has single innings and the limit of overs in the match is 20. A typical match of T20 cricket has a duration of 3 hours. Australia holds the top ranking in the ICC T20 International Championship with ratings of 275.

These are the three forms in which general cricket matches are played internationally as recognized by the ICC (International Cricket Council). This essay on cricket matches covers all three main variations.

An Exciting Cricket Match Essay

Cricket is my favourite game to play with my friends. In this essay on a cricket match I enjoyed, I choose to write about a game of cricket I played at my school.

Last winter, my school organized an inter-school cricket match. 5 teams were participating. In the game, there was a lot of tension among my playmates and our aim was to win to make our teachers and parents happy. Despite a bad start, we managed to set a target of 150 against our opponent team. They had a great start but due to our teamwork and strategy, we won by 15 runs.

It was a supremely enjoyable match of cricket the moments of which will always remain etched in my memory.

Therefore, here I end an essay on a cricket match that I enjoyed the most. Overall, this cricket match essay covers all the aspects of cricket; it discusses everything from the history and origin of the game to its popularity. No doubt it is one of the most loved sports and is enjoyed by people all across the globe.

Cricket is  very interesting outdoor game. I am very fond of playing cricket. I am fond of watching a really good match. The other day. I went to see a very fine match match between the our college and ABC College. The match was to be played on our college ground. It is lush green with beautiful boundary.

It was a fine day. A large number of people had gathered to witness the cricket match in the college stadium. The captain of the our team won the toss and elected to bat, and the other team took the field.

Players of both teams were very smart, active and energetic. Their athletic bodies reflected the hard-work they had done in gymnasium and on the ground. Our team was dressed in blue while they were in yellow. White ball was used for the first time in the history of local cricket.

The two batsman who went in first were quite good players. One was a good hitter, and punished the ball and all over the field whenever he got it. The other was very careful, and most of the time simply blocked. He did not care for runs, The bowling was strong, and the boy who played a steady game was not able to score at single run for the first fifteen minutes, but the other was securing them rapidly, But he soon paid for it: he was caught out smartly at mid off.

The next four players were dismissed very quickly two bowled.one caught out and one out leg-before wickets. All of us thought that out team would soon be all out. The score stood at fifty. However, the captain made a stand and, with the help of the steady boy who kept in with his blocking, was able to pull up the score to a hundred. The captain played very cautiously but before he could make some more runs, he was run out. The whole team were out for 128 runs.

We felt that our team would lose the match, but the other team did not have such an easy time as we expected. Our team had two very good bowlers one very fast, and the other spinner, and they gave their opponents a very tough time.

The other team made rather a poor start. Their first wicket fell in about ten minutes. when the score was only ten. However, their captain cheered them up made a great stand when he was caught out at 70. Then their wickets began to fall quickly. The game seemed to point to a defeat for the other team. But when their ninth and tenth player came to bat, their hopes revived. they hit and drove one of the fast scores reached a hundred. At the last one fine catch sent one of the fast scorer off the field. But the last man was a daring batsman whose two hits won applause from the crowd. They had now only thirteen runs to make to win the match. They struggle for runs, and great was the joy of the other team when the score stood and 115. But as ill luck would have it. one slow ball tempted the player to hit a six but he was clean bowled. The other team loss the match by five runs only. The spectators gave us standing ovation. Our college flags were fluttering everywhere while we sang and danced.

To conclude, sports are healthy activity to create a healthy society. They are an expression of players’ stamina, athleticism, sportsman spirit and self control. Besides, sports are great fun for players as well as spectators. This match was an evidence of such ideals!

“What I know most surely about morality and the duty of man, I owe it to sport.” (Albert Camus)

Cricket matches are more of a festival in India than a typical sporting event. The players give the same effort because there is so much anticipation about India’s matches with other countries.

Watching Live | Recently, the cricket World Cup tournament was held, and as expected, people were more than just excited. We were unable to leave anyone behind, so we visited the stadium to watch the match live. As we were on our way, we saw people hurrying towards their homes to watch the match on their televisions. A group of people were going towards the stadium, just like us, because they wanted to see the match live.

The Match | The match began with a coin toss to determine the batting and fielding teams. The whole stadium was filled with people, and as our team won the toss and the batsmen came to the field, the crowd started to call their names; it sounded like a roar. The entire match gave us goosebumps as our team was performing well, and though the opposition was tough, the boys gave it their best. The game was extremely exciting; players ran, balls flew, and everything else that could possibly happen did.

Celebrations | As our team won, a huge cheer came from the crowd. People were going crazy. Later, after the match celebrations were held, everybody was happy and appreciating the efforts of the team, and the match stayed in the conversation for the rest of the week.

500 Words Essay On A Cricket Match

Cricket is the second-most popular sport in the world. There are 2.5 billion cricket fans worldwide, spread across 180 nations. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the most viewed cricket event. The governing body in charge of planning world cup competitions for international cricket is the International Cricket Council (ICC).

History Of Cricket

Cricket originated in England as a sport for royals in the 16th century; later, during the colonial period, it was adapted by the rajas and nawabs of India as they came into contact with the British. Eventually, the royals of India started organising matches for their own entertainment in which common people were allowed to participate, which started the enthusiasm for this sport in the country.

How It Is Played

In cricket, two teams of 11 players face off against each other, one batting and one bowling and fielding. The batting and bowling teams are chosen through a coin toss. The field is circular to oval, with the main batting and bowling taking place in the middle of the field, involving two batsmen from one team and a bowler and wicket-keeper from the opposing team, while the remaining nine players hold the ground to prevent the batsmen from scoring. There are two umpires on the ground who judge the decisions.

Cricket In India

In India, cricket is more of a festival than a sport; some even call it a religion. From young to old, men and women, everybody is a fan of cricket in our country. The players that represent our country at the international level and our states and schools at the national and regional level are paid so much respect by everybody. The fanaticism of cricket is so deep that if you ask a child what he wants to be when he grows up, the obvious answer will be that he wants to play cricket.

My Experience Of A Cricket Match

Recently, an inter-school tournament was held, and we got the chance to see our team play. The stadium was packed with both our team's and the opposing team's supporters. Everybody was cheering for their teams.

The Game | The game began with a coin toss to determine which team would bat first. Our team won the toss and chose to bat first, and the opponent team bowled first. Both teams were on the ground as the game began, and on the very first ball, our team captain, who was the opening player, hit a six, and the ball flew out of the boundary. This continued throughout the game; whenever a batsman hit a six or four, the entire stadium and cricket ground erupted in raucous cheers from the crowd.

The Excitement | The match was exciting because it had ups and downs; players got clean hits; there were catches; sneak runs; boundaries; everything enthralled the audience. Even the bowling part of our team was much more exciting than the batting part. Our team scored 150 runs and was successful in stopping the opposing team at 120 runs, so we won. The players were appreciated a lot, and everybody talked about the game for more than a week. The team members later got awarded by our principal and the chief guest.

Essay on A Cricket Match 500 Words in English

Below we have provided a Cricket Match Essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

“Cricket to us was more than play; it was a worship in the summer sun.” ~ Edmund Charles Blunden

Two things have made their place in the heart of Indians forever; Shahrukh Khan (The King Khan of Bollywood) and the sport of cricket. In our country, cricket is a religion and players like Sachin Tendulkar are considered as god. This game is enjoyed by small children as well as office going adults. It never fails to amuse us. You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

Two teams, each with 11 players, compete to score the most runs. The aim is to win by achieving a higher score than the opposing team. The game unfolds in a designated area called the pitch, with a well-maintained field. The distance from the wicket is 68-58 meters, and a small circle within the main field is 2.64 meters. Essay on Cricket 2 (150 words)

Played with a bat and a ball in vast open fields, it involves two competing teams, each with 11 players. The action unfolds on a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch at the center of the field. Here, the batsman takes turns attempting to score runs during an innings.

The bowler, a member of the opposing team, delivers the ball to the batsman, aiming to dismiss them and take their wicket. The batsman continues batting until an error leads to their dismissal by the bowler. The game progresses as the batting team's members take their turns until all ten are out, or a specified number of overs (each consisting of six balls) is completed by one batsman.

Cricket, with its simple yet strategic gameplay, fosters dreams in young hearts, weaving stories of camaraderie and competition on the lush green fields where dreams take flight. As the bat meets the ball and the bowler seeks to outsmart the batsman, cricket becomes more than a game—it becomes a journey of passion, skill, and teamwork.

Cricket, a widely cherished professional outdoor game, sees enthusiastic participation from boys across various nations, both at national and international levels. The game unfolds between two teams, each comprising 11 players, and it is played until both teams complete 20 overs. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club diligently oversee the laws, rules, and regulations governing this captivating sport, played in formats like Test matches and Day Internationals.

The game transcended borders during the expansion of the British Empire, eventually featuring overseas matches. In the 19th century, the ICC, serving as the governing body, organized the first international match with teams consisting of 10 players each.

Cricket has become a cultural phenomenon, capturing the hearts of enthusiasts in countries like England, Australasia, the West Indies, the Indian subcontinent, and Southern Africa. In India, particularly, young children develop a strong fondness for the game, often playing it in open spaces like roads or parks. As cricket continues to be a source of joy and camaraderie worldwide, its enduring popularity persists through the dedication of players and the passion of fans.

This captivating sport has a strong presence in countries like India, England, and Australia, offering a beautiful spectacle played with a bat and a ball on expansive fields. Personally, cricket is my favorite sport, and I eagerly watch national and international competitions on TV.

In a cricket match, two teams with 11 players each engage in a battle of skills. The team winning the toss decides whether to bat or bowl first, and both teams take turns in these roles. Cricket has a set of rules that players must adhere to, making it essential to understand the laws and regulations to play the game correctly. The ideal playing conditions involve a dry ground, but challenges arise when the field becomes wet.

One batsman gets the opportunity to bat until they are out of the game. The excitement reaches a crescendo in a match, with the crowd's roar echoing through the stadium, especially when a favorite batsman scores a boundary. Sachin Tendulkar, a legendary cricketer, is my idol. Essay on Cricket 6 (500 words)

Cricket stands as the most popular and cherished game among people of all age groups. Its appeal lies in the excitement and suspense it offers, with no definite prediction of which team will emerge victorious. The game's unpredictable nature keeps everyone on the edge of their seats until the last moment. Cricket enthusiasts passionately follow their favorite teams during test matches, national competitions, or international tournaments, creating a bustling crowd in stadiums and TV rooms alike.

Cricket's influence extends far beyond India, transcending borders to captivate audiences in countries like England, Pakistan, Ireland, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, and more. The game's popularity is not confined to a specific region, reflecting its universal appeal.

Cricket matches, often played for five days with a Rest in between, involve two teams, each comprising 11 players. The entire test match comprises two innings - the first and the second. The outcome of a cricket match hinges on the total runs scored by each team in their two innings, with the team accumulating the highest number of runs declared the winner at the end of the game.

Young boys are particularly drawn to cricket, harboring dreams of becoming proficient cricketers. Despite not being a native Indian game, cricket has woven itself into the fabric of the nation, becoming a source of enthusiasm and joy for many. The influence of cricket reaches far and wide, shaping the aspirations of young minds.

Cricket is far from a simple game, requiring a comprehensive understanding of its rules and regulations. Two key players, the batsman and the bowler, take center stage at any given time. They are switched out whenever they are declared out or complete their allotted number of balls and overs. The strategic play between these two players forms the essence of the game, showcasing the intricate dynamics that unfold on the cricket field.

Before the commencement of a cricket match, a coin toss occurs to determine which team will start batting. The team winning the toss assumes the role of the batting side, while the opposing team takes up bowling duties. Both teams, however, get the opportunity to bat and bowl alternately. This toss becomes a crucial moment, setting the tone for the entire match.

The essence of cricket lies in the dual facets of winning and defeating, adding layers of intrigue to the game. Moments of exhilaration erupt when a batsman hits a boundary or scores a six, filling the cricket ground and stadium with the resounding cheers of fervent cricket lovers, particularly when the favored team is at the crease.

In conclusion, cricket's universal popularity, its gripping five-day matches, and the dreams it inspires among the youth make it a game deeply embedded in the hearts of millions. As the world watches in anticipation, cricket continues to be not just a sport but a cultural phenomenon that unites people across nations in the spirit of competition and sportsmanship.
