This handout will help you write a book review, a report or essay that offers a critical perspective on a text. It offers a process and suggests some strategies for writing book reviews.

What is a review?

A review is a critical evaluation of a text, event, object, or phenomenon. Reviews can consider books, articles, entire genres or fields of literature, architecture, art, fashion, restaurants, policies, exhibitions, performances, and many other forms. This handout will focus on book reviews. For a similar assignment, see our handout on literature reviews .

Above all, a review makes an argument. The most important element of a review is that it is a commentary, not merely a summary. It allows you to enter into dialogue and discussion with the work’s creator and with other audiences. You can offer agreement or disagreement and identify where you find the work exemplary or deficient in its knowledge, judgments, or organization. You should clearly state your opinion of the work in question, and that statement will probably resemble other types of academic writing, with a thesis statement, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Typically, reviews are brief. In newspapers and academic journals, they rarely exceed 1000 words, although you may encounter lengthier assignments and extended commentaries. In either case, reviews need to be succinct. While they vary in tone, subject, and style, they share some common features:

  • First, a review gives the reader a concise summary of the content. This includes a relevant description of the topic as well as its overall perspective, argument, or purpose.
  • Second, and more importantly, a review offers a critical assessment of the content. This involves your reactions to the work under review: what strikes you as noteworthy, whether or not it was effective or persuasive, and how it enhanced your understanding of the issues at hand.
  • Finally, in addition to analyzing the work, a review often suggests whether or not the audience would appreciate it.

Becoming an expert reviewer: three short examples

Reviewing can be a daunting task. Someone has asked for your opinion about something that you may feel unqualified to evaluate. Who are you to criticize Toni Morrison’s new book if you’ve never written a novel yourself, much less won a Nobel Prize? The point is that someone—a professor, a journal editor, peers in a study group—wants to know what you think about a particular work. You may not be (or feel like) an expert, but you need to pretend to be one for your particular audience. Nobody expects you to be the intellectual equal of the work’s creator, but your careful observations can provide you with the raw material to make reasoned judgments. Tactfully voicing agreement and disagreement, praise and criticism, is a valuable, challenging skill, and like many forms of writing, reviews require you to provide concrete evidence for your assertions.

Consider the following brief book review written for a history course on medieval Europe by a student who is fascinated with beer:

Judith Bennett’s Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England: Women’s Work in a Changing World, 1300-1600, investigates how women used to brew and sell the majority of ale drunk in England. Historically, ale and beer (not milk, wine, or water) were important elements of the English diet. Ale brewing was low-skill and low status labor that was complimentary to women’s domestic responsibilities. In the early fifteenth century, brewers began to make ale with hops, and they called this new drink “beer.” This technique allowed brewers to produce their beverages at a lower cost and to sell it more easily, although women generally stopped brewing once the business became more profitable.

The student describes the subject of the book and provides an accurate summary of its contents. But the reader does not learn some key information expected from a review: the author’s argument, the student’s appraisal of the book and its argument, and whether or not the student would recommend the book. As a critical assessment, a book review should focus on opinions, not facts and details. Summary should be kept to a minimum, and specific details should serve to illustrate arguments.

Now consider a review of the same book written by a slightly more opinionated student:

Judith Bennett’s Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England: Women’s Work in a Changing World, 1300-1600 was a colossal disappointment. I wanted to know about the rituals surrounding drinking in medieval England: the songs, the games, the parties. Bennett provided none of that information. I liked how the book showed ale and beer brewing as an economic activity, but the reader gets lost in the details of prices and wages. I was more interested in the private lives of the women brewsters. The book was divided into eight long chapters, and I can’t imagine why anyone would ever want to read it.

There’s no shortage of judgments in this review! But the student does not display a working knowledge of the book’s argument. The reader has a sense of what the student expected of the book, but no sense of what the author herself set out to prove. Although the student gives several reasons for the negative review, those examples do not clearly relate to each other as part of an overall evaluation—in other words, in support of a specific thesis. This review is indeed an assessment, but not a critical one.

Here is one final review of the same book:

One of feminism’s paradoxes—one that challenges many of its optimistic histories—is how patriarchy remains persistent over time. While Judith Bennett’s Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England: Women’s Work in a Changing World, 1300-1600 recognizes medieval women as historical actors through their ale brewing, it also shows that female agency had its limits with the advent of beer. I had assumed that those limits were religious and political, but Bennett shows how a “patriarchal equilibrium” shut women out of economic life as well. Her analysis of women’s wages in ale and beer production proves that a change in women’s work does not equate to a change in working women’s status. Contemporary feminists and historians alike should read Bennett’s book and think twice when they crack open their next brewsky.

This student’s review avoids the problems of the previous two examples. It combines balanced opinion and concrete example, a critical assessment based on an explicitly stated rationale, and a recommendation to a potential audience. The reader gets a sense of what the book’s author intended to demonstrate. Moreover, the student refers to an argument about feminist history in general that places the book in a specific genre and that reaches out to a general audience. The example of analyzing wages illustrates an argument, the analysis engages significant intellectual debates, and the reasons for the overall positive review are plainly visible. The review offers criteria, opinions, and support with which the reader can agree or disagree.

Developing an assessment: before you write

There is no definitive method to writing a review, although some critical thinking about the work at hand is necessary before you actually begin writing. Thus, writing a review is a two-step process: developing an argument about the work under consideration, and making that argument as you write an organized and well-supported draft. What follows is a series of questions to focus your thinking as you dig into the work at hand. While the questions specifically consider book reviews, you can easily transpose them to an analysis of performances, exhibitions, and other review subjects. Don’t feel obligated to address each of the questions; some will be more relevant than others to the book in question.

  • What is the thesis—or main argument—of the book? If the author wanted you to get one idea from the book, what would it be? How does it compare or contrast to the world you know? What has the book accomplished?
  • What exactly is the subject or topic of the book? Does the author cover the subject adequately? Does the author cover all aspects of the subject in a balanced fashion? What is the approach to the subject (topical, analytical, chronological, descriptive)?
  • How does the author support their argument? What evidence do they use to prove their point? Do you find that evidence convincing? Why or why not? Does any of the author’s information (or conclusions) conflict with other books you’ve read, courses you’ve taken or just previous assumptions you had of the subject?
  • How does the author structure their argument? What are the parts that make up the whole? Does the argument make sense? Does it persuade you? Why or why not?
  • How has this book helped you understand the subject? Would you recommend the book to your reader?

Beyond the internal workings of the book, you may also consider some information about the author and the circumstances of the text’s production:

  • Who is the author? Nationality, political persuasion, training, intellectual interests, personal history, and historical context may provide crucial details about how a work takes shape. Does it matter, for example, that the biographer was the subject’s best friend? What difference would it make if the author participated in the events they write about?
  • What is the book’s genre? Out of what field does it emerge? Does it conform to or depart from the conventions of its genre? These questions can provide a historical or literary standard on which to base your evaluations. If you are reviewing the first book ever written on the subject, it will be important for your readers to know. Keep in mind, though, that naming “firsts”—alongside naming “bests” and “onlys”—can be a risky business unless you’re absolutely certain.

Writing the review

Once you have made your observations and assessments of the work under review, carefully survey your notes and attempt to unify your impressions into a statement that will describe the purpose or thesis of your review. Check out our handout on thesis statements . Then, outline the arguments that support your thesis.

Your arguments should develop the thesis in a logical manner. That logic, unlike more standard academic writing, may initially emphasize the author’s argument while you develop your own in the course of the review. The relative emphasis depends on the nature of the review: if readers may be more interested in the work itself, you may want to make the work and the author more prominent; if you want the review to be about your perspective and opinions, then you may structure the review to privilege your observations over (but never separate from) those of the work under review. What follows is just one of many ways to organize a review.

Introduction

Since most reviews are brief, many writers begin with a catchy quip or anecdote that succinctly delivers their argument. But you can introduce your review differently depending on the argument and audience. The Writing Center’s handout on introductions can help you find an approach that works. In general, you should include:

  • The name of the author and the book title and the main theme.
  • Relevant details about who the author is and where they stand in the genre or field of inquiry. You could also link the title to the subject to show how the title explains the subject matter.
  • The context of the book and/or your review. Placing your review in a framework that makes sense to your audience alerts readers to your “take” on the book. Perhaps you want to situate a book about the Cuban revolution in the context of Cold War rivalries between the United States and the Soviet Union. Another reviewer might want to consider the book in the framework of Latin American social movements. Your choice of context informs your argument.
  • The thesis of the book. If you are reviewing fiction, this may be difficult since novels, plays, and short stories rarely have explicit arguments. But identifying the book’s particular novelty, angle, or originality allows you to show what specific contribution the piece is trying to make.
  • Your thesis about the book.

Summary of content

This should be brief, as analysis takes priority. In the course of making your assessment, you’ll hopefully be backing up your assertions with concrete evidence from the book, so some summary will be dispersed throughout other parts of the review.

The necessary amount of summary also depends on your audience. Graduate students, beware! If you are writing book reviews for colleagues—to prepare for comprehensive exams, for example—you may want to devote more attention to summarizing the book’s contents. If, on the other hand, your audience has already read the book—such as a class assignment on the same work—you may have more liberty to explore more subtle points and to emphasize your own argument. Analysis and evaluation of the book

Your analysis and evaluation should be organized into paragraphs that deal with single aspects of your argument. This arrangement can be challenging when your purpose is to consider the book as a whole, but it can help you differentiate elements of your criticism and pair assertions with evidence more clearly. You do not necessarily need to work chronologically through the book as you discuss it. Given the argument you want to make, you can organize your paragraphs more usefully by themes, methods, or other elements of the book. If you find it useful to include comparisons to other books, keep them brief so that the book under review remains in the spotlight. Avoid excessive quotation and give a specific page reference in parentheses when you do quote. Remember that you can state many of the author’s points in your own words.

Sum up or restate your thesis or make the final judgment regarding the book. You should not introduce new evidence for your argument in the conclusion. You can, however, introduce new ideas that go beyond the book if they extend the logic of your own thesis. This paragraph needs to balance the book’s strengths and weaknesses in order to unify your evaluation. Did the body of your review have three negative paragraphs and one favorable one? What do they all add up to? The Writing Center’s handout on conclusions can help you make a final assessment.

Finally, a few general considerations:

  • Review the book in front of you, not the book you wish the author had written. You can and should point out shortcomings or failures, but don’t criticize the book for not being something it was never intended to be.
  • With any luck, the author of the book worked hard to find the right words to express her ideas. You should attempt to do the same. Precise language allows you to control the tone of your review.
  • Never hesitate to challenge an assumption, approach, or argument. Be sure, however, to cite specific examples to back up your assertions carefully.
  • Try to present a balanced argument about the value of the book for its audience. You’re entitled—and sometimes obligated—to voice strong agreement or disagreement. But keep in mind that a bad book takes as long to write as a good one, and every author deserves fair treatment. Harsh judgments are difficult to prove and can give readers the sense that you were unfair in your assessment.
  • A great place to learn about book reviews is to look at examples. The New York Times Sunday Book Review and The New York Review of Books can show you how professional writers review books.

Traditionally, book reviews are evaluations of a recently published book in any genre. Usually, around the 500 to 700-word mark, they briefly describe a text’s main elements while appraising the work’s strengths and weaknesses. Published book reviews can appear in newspapers, magazines, and academic journals. They provide the reader with an overview of the book itself and indicate whether or not the reviewer would recommend the book to the reader.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A BOOK REVIEW?

There was a time when book reviews were a regular appearance in every quality newspaper and many periodicals. They were essential elements in whether or not a book would sell well. A review from a heavyweight critic could often be the deciding factor in whether a book became a bestseller or a damp squib. In the last few decades, however, the book review’s influence has waned considerably, with many potential book buyers preferring to consult customer reviews on Amazon, or sites like Goodreads, before buying. As a result, book review’s appearance in newspapers, journals, and digital media has become less frequent.

WHY BOTHER TEACHING STUDENTS TO WRITE BOOK REVIEWS AT ALL?

Even in the heyday of the book review’s influence, few students who learned the craft of writing a book review became literary critics! The real value of crafting a well-written book review for a student does not lie in their ability to impact book sales. Understanding how to produce a well-written book review helps students to:

●     Engage critically with a text

●     Critically evaluate a text

●     Respond personally to a range of different writing genres

●     Improve their own reading, writing, and thinking skills.

Not to Be Confused with a Book Report!

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BOOK REVIEW AND A BOOK REPORT?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there are clear differences in both the purpose and the format of the two genres. Generally speaking, book reports aim to give a more detailed outline of what occurs in a book. A book report on a work of fiction will tend to give a comprehensive account of the characters, major plot lines, and themes in the book. Book reports are usually written around the K-12 age range, while book reviews tend not to be undertaken by those at the younger end of this age range due to the need for the higher-level critical skills required in writing them. At their highest expression, book reviews are written at the college level and by professional critics.

ELEMENTS OF A BOOK REVIEW

As with any of the writing genres we teach our students, a book review can be helpfully explained in terms of criteria. While there is much to the ‘art’ of writing, there is also, thankfully, a lot of the nuts and bolts that can be listed too. Have students consider the following elements before writing:

●     Title: Often, the title of the book review will correspond to the title of the text itself, but there may also be some examination of the title’s relevance. How does it fit into the purpose of the work as a whole? Does it convey a message or reveal larger themes explored within the work?

●     Author: Within the book review, there may be some discussion of who the author is and what they have written before, especially if it relates to the current work being reviewed. There may be some mention of the author’s style and what they are best known for. If the author has received any awards or prizes, this may also be mentioned within the body of the review.

●     Genre: A book review will identify the genre that the book belongs to, whether fiction or nonfiction, poetry, romance, science-fiction, history etc. The genre will likely tie in, too with who the intended audience for the book is and what the overall purpose of the work is.

●     Book Jacket / Cover: Often, a book’s cover will contain artwork that is worthy of comment. It may contain interesting details related to the text that contribute to, or detract from, the work as a whole.

●     Structure: The book’s structure will often be heavily informed by its genre. Have students examine how the book is organized before writing their review. Does it contain a preface from a guest editor, for example? Is it written in sections or chapters? Does it have a table of contents, index, glossary etc.? While all these details may not make it into the review itself, looking at how the book is structured may reveal some interesting aspects.

●     Publisher and Price: A book review will usually contain details of who publishes the book and its cost. A review will often provide details of where the book is available too.

BOOK REVIEW KEY ELEMENTS

As students read and engage with the work they will review, they will develop a sense of the shape their review will take. This will begin with the summary. Encourage students to take notes during the reading of the work that will help them in writing the summary that will form an essential part of their review. Aspects of the book they may wish to take notes on in a work of fiction may include:

●     Characters: Who are the main characters? What are their motivations? Are they convincingly drawn? Or are they empathetic characters?

●     Themes: What are the main themes of the work? Are there recurring motifs in the work? Is the exploration of the themes deep or surface only?

●     Style: What are the key aspects of the writer’s style? How does it fit into the wider literary world?

●     Plot: What is the story’s main catalyst? What happens in the rising action? What are the story’s subplots? 

A book review will generally begin with a short summary of the work itself. However, it is important not to give too much away, remind students – no spoilers, please! For nonfiction works, this may be a summary of the main arguments of the work, again, without giving too much detail away. In a work of fiction, a book review will often summarise up to the rising action of the piece without going beyond to reveal too much!

The summary should also provide some orientation for the reader. Given the nature of the purpose of a review, it is important that students’ consider their intended audience in the writing of their review. Readers will most likely not have read the book in question and will require some orientation. This is often achieved through introductions to the main characters, themes, primary arguments etc. This will help the reader to gauge whether or not the book is of interest to them.

Once your student has summarized the work, it is time to ‘review’ in earnest. At this point, the student should begin to detail their own opinion of the book. To do this well they should:

i. Make It Personal

Often when teaching essay writing we will talk to our students about the importance of climbing up and down the ladder of abstraction. Just as it is helpful to explore large, more abstract concepts in an essay by bringing it down to Earth, in a book review, it is important that students can relate the characters, themes, ideas etc to their own lives.

Book reviews are meant to be subjective. They are opinion pieces, and opinions grow out of our experiences of life. Encourage students to link the work they are writing about to their own personal life within the body of the review. By making this personal connection to the work, students contextualize their opinions for the readers and help them to understand whether the book will be of interest to them or not in the process.

ii. Make It Universal

Just as it is important to climb down the ladder of abstraction to show how the work relates to individual life, it is important to climb upwards on the ladder too. Students should endeavor to show how the ideas explored in the book relate to the wider world. The may be in the form of the universality of the underlying themes in a work of fiction or, for example, the international implications for arguments expressed in a work of nonfiction.

iii. Support Opinions with Evidence

A book review is a subjective piece of writing by its very nature. However, just because it is subjective does not mean that opinions do not need to be justified. Make sure students understand how to back up their opinions with various forms of evidence, for example, quotations, statistics, and the use of primary and secondary sources.

As with any writing genre, encourage students to polish things up with review and revision at the end. Encourage them to proofread and check for accurate spelling throughout, with particular attention to the author’s name, character names, publisher etc. 

It is good practice too for students to double-check their use of evidence. Are statements supported? Are the statistics used correctly? Are the quotations from the text accurate? Mistakes such as these uncorrected can do great damage to the value of a book review as they can undermine the reader’s confidence in the writer’s judgement.

The discipline of writing book reviews offers students opportunities to develop their writing skills and exercise their critical faculties. Book reviews can be valuable standalone activities or serve as a part of a series of activities engaging with a central text. They can also serve as an effective springboard into later discussion work based on the ideas and issues explored in a particular book. Though the book review does not hold the sway it once did in the mind’s of the reading public, it still serves as an effective teaching tool in our classrooms today.

What is a good structure?

A good structure to your academic work is vital to make it understandable, easy to read and engaging. An essay or report tells a story, so as any good story does, it needs a beginning, a middle and an end. It's not just the work as a whole that needs structure but your paragraphs too. Why do I need to learn structure?

To gain good marks and fulfil the learning outcomes of your assignments, you need to demonstrate that you understand the concepts and the work that you have used to form your argument. Structure also ensures that:

  • you avoid repeating yourself
  • you include information that leads from one concept to another
  • you show understanding of your thought process
  • you don't forget a piece of information along the way

How do I use structure?

The basic structure of any academic work looks something like this:

  • Title/Question
  • Introduction (approx. 10% of the word count)
  • Main body - development of argument (approx. 80% of the word count)
  • Conclusion (approx. 10% of the word count)
  • References/Bibliography

Creating sections helps you to plan how much you need to write on each area. This breaks the task down into smaller chunks.

For example:

Essay word count - 3,000 words Introduction - 300 words Main body - 2,400 words Conclusion - 300 words

If your subject has three major themes you can then break the main body down again:

Essay word count - 3,000 words Introduction - 300 words Main body - 2,400 words (theme 1 - 800 words; theme 2 - 800 words; theme 3 - 800 words) Conclusion - 300 words

This is not a precise rule; you can adjust the word counts to accommodate where more emphasis is needed or not, but it can be used to break a large word count into manageable sections.

Let’s examine each of these points in more detail:

Basic story structure, at its most elementary level, means giving your novel a clearly defined begining , middle and end.

The beginning typically will:

  • Show the inciting incident that sets the story in motion (for example, in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, the inciting incident is the arrival of mysterious letters addressed to Harry from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry)
  • Introduce the primary characters of the story
  • Establish the setting of the story
  • Give readers an idea of where the story is headed (the opening line of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (1877), for example, tells us it will feature unhappy family situations: ‘Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.’)

The middle of a novel is where there is substantial change. Secondary characters come or go and other aspects such as setting may change. Obstacles to central characters’ goals emerge.

By the middle, the central idea of your story should be clear. Take John le Carré’s espionage novel The Night Manager  (1993), for example.  We know by the middle that the protagonist Jonathan Pine’s goal is to defeat the crooked billionaire smuggler, Richard Roper. By the middle of the book, we see the extent of Pine’s entanglement. He manages to infiltrate Roper’s inner circle. The middle is where plot complications – like Pine’s dangerous double agent dealings – stack up.

A great ending ties the story’s strands together. Even if there is no final resolution (like in series where central conflicts span multiple novels), each book resolves, at least, a major secondary conflict. There is the structural sense of things drawing to a close. These same rules apply on a smaller level to individual scenes (our free guide to scene structure will help you make small scale structure strong, too).

Creating good story structure means balancing your story’s introduction, development, and conclusion. If your story is all introduction and no development, it can feel static and stale. Allow your characters’ goals to grow and change.

There are many different story structure types. Popular types include:

  • Three act structure: the story can be divided into three parts. Classic novels of voyage and return, for example, often follow this structure. Randy Ingermanson breaks down this structure in fantasy series such as Harry Potter and Twilight
  • Orson Scott Card’s 4 story structures: In a post for Writer’s Digest, Orson Scott Card details four story structure types  according to the plot details authors structure stories around. They are: a) The Milieu Story : An observer who sees things the way we see them experiences a strange place (e.g. Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz ) – the story is structured around the experience of a strange and outlandish setting. b) The Idea Story : A question is raised and answered (e.g. in mystery novels,  the central questions ‘who’ and ‘why’? Who was the killer and what was their motive? c) The Character Story: A character goes through immense inner change, and this is the story’s main focus. Coming-of-age novels, such as James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man  (1916) typify this structure. d) The Event Story: Something is wrong with the world and either a new order must be established or the old must be destroyed. The Lord of the Rings , in which the tyrant Sauron must be stopped, is a classic example.
  • Mirror structure:  In David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas (2004),   each section of the book is left incomplete until the book’s central section. From there, Mitchell resolves the unfinished character arcs in reverse order, ending with the first character’s arc and setting

The above examples show that structure can refer to how we decide to divide up the parts of the story. As with Orson Scott Card’s four story structure types, it also refers to how we build and arrange a story around a central idea. Each structure type has pros and cons. One might be too linear for the type of story you want to tell, for example, that might suit a more fragmented, non-linear approach. This leads to the next point:

When you decide how to structure a novel, think about your central idea. What would best suit your story type?

A story, for example, about an adventure and return home (like The Lord of the Rings or Homer’s Odyssey ) might suit Three Act Structure because of the simple three-part narrative arc: ‘home – away – home again’.

Think about the mirror structure of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas  described above. The novel begins with diary excerpts by a sailor living in 1850. The middle section follows a different character. It could be set in pre-modern times, following tribal life, but we slowly realize it  might describe a post-apocalyptic future, a return to tribal life wrought by conflict or disaster.

In Cloud Atlas , the idea of history being cyclical – of returning to the beginning and starting over – is everywhere. We see it in both the changing time-frame of the story and how its individual chapters circle back to previous, unfinished story arcs. The mirror structure of the book is thus perfect for showing cyclical, repetitive elements of history – how society builds itself up and tears itself back down to start all over.

It’s the perfect novel structure for a story that explores cycles of power struggle and violence, how individuals and groups prey on others. It’s an imaginative study of society and its capacity for self-inflicted ruin.

Think how you can structure your story so that the structure itself – the ordering of scenes, time-frames and events – creates meaning. It would make sense, for example, for a novel where the protagonist has amnesia, to include structural holes and gaps. You might have ‘missing’ chapters the story later fills in. Allow yourself to play with structure as you would with setting and characterization . Have fun with it.

If you are still learning how to structure a novel, creating your own, flexible blueprint is a good idea. (You can use the Now Novel Idea Finder to help with this). Sometimes, using a pre-existing template will force you to twist and contort your story to fit a structure and this doesn’t always work.

If you do use a story structure template (such as this template here ), give yourself the freedom to modify the template as you see fit. Perhaps, for example, you want to show the climax of the story first, then circle back to the exposition. This approach – beginning with your story’s most dramatic and perplexing point – is popular in genres such as murder mysteries. The mystery of the killer’s identity or motivation is intriguing enough for readers not to mind that you began with the climax before introducing characters and giving backstory and rising action.

Although you can go back and restructure your story once you’ve finished drafting, it’s a good idea to work out the skeleton of your story first and move from there.

Of course not everyone is a plotter by nature. However, writer’s block is a risk if you don’t at least have some  idea of how you will reach the end. Think of early story structure like an architect’s blueprint: The architect doesn’t design a house brick by brick – there are rooms, features (like plot events) and functions (characters’ purposes and goals) they know the design should ideally include.

The key point is that the structure you create before you draft should be flexible. Ultimately, allow your characters to take the story to whatever destination they want. Structuring from the start will simply make it easier to construct their paths.

Knowing how to structure a novel and how to structure a narrative essay are two different skills. In a narrative essay, you might have extremely visible structure. You might have a table of contents, numbered section headings, numbered footnotes. In fiction, you could purposefully draw attention to your novel’s structure. This can even be clever (a novel about a school play that goes horribly, comically wrong, for example, might have sections titled ‘Act I’, ‘Act II’ and ‘Act III’, for example, and a list of ‘dramatis personae’).

Yet when it comes to creating a sense of progression from beginning to middle to end, avoid Victorian approaches such as writing ‘And now, reader, we approach the end of our story’. The events themselves should give us a clue the story is winding to a close: The heroes reach the villain’s hideout and the final confrontation, for example. Good story structure needs no accompanying explanation.

Knowing how to structure a novel so it follows (or breaks) conventions of your genre is a useful skill. In fantasy quests, for example, there is often a three-part ‘voyage and return’ structure (as in the three separate books of The Lord of the Rings ). Other common genre-specific structures include:

  • Romance: The romantic leads dislike or tease each other at first but by the middle or final third of the story, their attraction is certain. Countless novels as well as TV series such as New Girl and The Mindy Project use this plot structure
  • Suspense:  Typically the investigation of the crime has a spiral-like structure, where the detective’s fact-finding circles them increasingly closer to the perpetrator
  • Drama: In novels about personal tragedy, three act structure often features. We see a rise, a fall and the aftermath

When you read novels in your genre, examine their structure. As an exercise, note:

  • What ground the introduction or beginning of the story covers – who do we meet and what do we know about them by the end of the first chapter?
  • By the middle of the book, how have things changed?
  • How does the story end, and how does it compare to other books in the genre?

When thinking of novel structure, I always come back to the perennially and generationally popular, The Catcher in the Rye, by JD Salinger. A wild ride, from being kicked out of Pency Prep, to watching Phoebe at the carousel–and none of it with any true structure except that which the literati ascribe to it.

One could even go so far as to say that Catcher defies conventional wisdom for structure. A journey to Phoebe? We don’t know that until the final pages. A ticking time clock to push the action? Not one tick. Subplots? Not really, no.

From nuns, to a pimp, from eternally-showering Ackerly, to phony and handsome Stradlater, the book is ripe with vignettes that reek of symbolism. And the voice of Holden is second to none other. But plot? As thin as the pages of the family Bible.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, Sven. A good point – there are endless ways to write a fascinating read and not all of them need Big Ideas or complex plot developments. Franny and Zooey is another Salinger classic that relies on interesting characterization more than plot.

A clear, arguable thesis will tell your readers where you are going to end up, but it can also help you figure out how to get them there. Put your thesis at the top of a blank page and then make a list of the points you will need to make to argue that thesis effectively.

For example, consider this example from the thesis handout : While Sandel argues persuasively that our instinct to “remake”(54) ourselves into something ever more perfect is a problem, his belief that we can always draw a line between what is medically necessary and what makes us simply “better than well”(51) is less convincing.

To argue this thesis, the author needs to do the following:

  • Show what is persuasive about Sandel’s claims about the problems with striving for perfection.
  • Show what is not convincing about Sandel’s claim that we can clearly distinguish between medically necessary enhancements and other enhancements.

Once you have broken down your thesis into main claims, you can then think about what sub-claims you will need to make in order to support each of those main claims. That step might look like this:

  • Evidence that Sandel provides to support this claim
  • Discussion of why this evidence is convincing even in light of potential counterarguments
  • Discussion of cases when medically necessary enhancement and non-medical enhancement cannot be easily distinguished
  • Analysis of what those cases mean for Sandel’s argument
  • Consideration of counterarguments (what Sandel might say in response to this section of your argument)

Each argument you will make in an essay will be different, but this strategy will often be a useful first step in figuring out the path of your argument.  

Strategy #2: Use subheadings, even if you remove them later  

Scientific papers generally include standard subheadings to delineate different sections of the paper, including “introduction,” “methods,” and “discussion.” Even when you are not required to use subheadings, it can be helpful to put them into an early draft to help you see what you’ve written and to begin to think about how your ideas fit together. You can do this by typing subheadings above the sections of your draft.

If you’re having trouble figuring out how your ideas fit together, try beginning with informal subheadings like these:

  • Introduction  
  • Explain the author’s main point  
  • Show why this main point doesn’t hold up when we consider this other example  
  • Explain the implications of what I’ve shown for our understanding of the author  
  • Show how that changes our understanding of the topic

For longer papers, you may decide to include subheadings to guide your reader through your argument. In those cases, you would need to revise your informal subheadings to be more useful for your readers. For example, if you have initially written in something like “explain the author’s main point,” your final subheading might be something like “Sandel’s main argument” or “Sandel’s opposition to genetic enhancement.” In other cases, once you have the key pieces of your argument in place, you will be able to remove the subheadings.  

Strategy #3: Create a reverse outline from your draft  

While you may have learned to outline a paper before writing a draft, this step is often difficult because our ideas develop as we write. In some cases, it can be more helpful to write a draft in which you get all of your ideas out and then do a “reverse outline” of what you’ve already written. This doesn’t have to be formal; you can just make a list of the point in each paragraph of your draft and then ask these questions:

  • Are those points in an order that makes sense to you?  
  • Are there gaps in your argument?  
  • Do the topic sentences of the paragraphs clearly state these main points?  
  • Do you have more than one paragraph that focuses on the same point? If so, do you need both paragraphs?  
  • Do you have some paragraphs that include too many points? If so, would it make more sense to split them up?  
  • Do you make points near the end of the draft that would be more effective earlier in your paper?  
  • Are there points missing from this draft?

I didn’t know books could open you back up; that there were books that stayed with you, where reading was like a chemical event. I knew nothing.

N ot too long ago, I was listening to the American writer Bud Smith on a podcast. It was dusk, late summer. I was driving through the countryside, only half listening, when he had this burst of eloquence. He said the reason he reads and writes is because it’s the most active form of art; the author and reader are in collaboration. They have to work together to find meaning. The reader swims upstream, the author swims downstream and at some point they meet.

I’d never thought about the relationship like this before. To be honest, I’d never really thought of it as a relationship. I thought the writer did the work and the reader simply showed up to take it in, to gulp it down. But I liked his way of looking at it. I liked it so much that when I got home, I told my wife to get in the car and I played it for her again. “See, this is why,” I wanted to say. “This explains everything.” Except, of course, it didn’t explain anything.

The idea was still lingering a few months later when I decided to reread Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. A few weeks before starting, I was in a bookstore in Mount Eden killing time when I heard three young guys discussing it. They were raving. They couldn’t get enough of it. They pressed it onto their one friend who hadn’t read it yet, telling him he had to. He absolutely had to. They didn’t look like readers, but maybe that was the point.

I was 19 years old when Dad handed me his copy. I knew nothing about “good” books. I didn’t know who Murakami was. Until then, other than school texts, I’d read fantasy. I read to escape my life. I read about wizards and dragons and half-elves. I read without taste or focus, racing through for plot alone. At some point, I got over it. In my last year of school, I stopped reading altogether. I was too busy counting excuses. I didn’t know books could open you back up; that there were books that stayed with you, where reading was like a chemical event. I didn’t know that you don’t get to choose which books, or when it happens, or how. I knew nothing.

F or me, this kind of chemical reading event has only happened three times. Norwegian Wood was the first. It was a dreary weekend in Auckland circa 2009, and I was still living at home. I took the book pressed upon me on a Saturday morning, flopped down on a couch by the window, and as far as I can recall, didn’t move again until Sunday night.

When I started reading the book, it was raining. When I closed it, the skies had cleared. I felt different: “changed” might be putting it too heavily, but something had gone on under the skin. At that point, as I stepped into the back garden, into the fresh air and oddly bright evening, I was floating, almost in a state of shock. I grieved for the characters, for myself, that it was over. It was a feeling I had, until then, reserved for music and TV and movies, a feeling I thought had to be manipulated out of me. Except this time it felt authentic.

Over the next two years, I would read Norwegian Wood another four or five more times. I would recommend it to everyone I knew. My friends and I actually discussed it at parties. One time, I caught a girl stealing my only copy. She had slipped into a mesh backpack so I could see she was taking it. She wanted me to see it, I realised later. 

When the 2010 movie came out, I watched bitterly, wondering why they had butchered it. Later, I wondered if it was because the movie begins with suicide; if it showed me something I didn’t want to see: that the book was darker and colder than I had accounted for; that I had missed something; that I loved it for the wrong reasons. I loved it for simple reasons: for its accessibility, beauty, and perhaps most importantly, because it wasn’t cheesy. By setting it in Tokyo during the 1960s student protests, and by constantly referring to books, records, coffee and whisky, he made love and heartache seem cool. He used nostalgia like a weapon and I lapped it up. I was the perfect age: I was one year older than Watanabe, the hardboiled narrator, when the book began.

Some of the ideas laced through the book were addictive to me, like when he talks about how Naoko, one of the girls he loves, would be turning 20 and didn’t want to:

I felt as if the only thing that made sense, whether for Naoko or for me, was to keep going back and forth between 18 and 19. After 18 would come 19 and after 19, 18 of course.

Later I realised this perennial cycling between the last years of teenagehood was just another form of purgatory, but back then I knew exactly what he meant. The sentiment stayed with me. As each birthday approached and I had once again failed to achieve all that I wanted to achieve, I considered ricocheting back and forth, never getting older. I wished that was how it worked. 

I tried to see myself in Watanabe. Just as he made few friends and kept to himself, preferring books and music to people, I steered clear of groups. I was quiet and withdrawn, but by embracing the book I was able to make it feel like it was my choice.

Nobody likes to be alone that much. I don’t go out of my way to make friends, that’s all. It just leads to disappointment .

By repeating Watanabe’s explanations over and over, they became my own. I spent hungover Sundays walking across Auckland. I dismissed my peers’ ambition as ego. I thought Watanabe’s way of living was better than any I had encountered. I didn’t know how much Murakami drew on the work of Dostoevsky and Chandler. I thought Watanabe was more human than he was. True, he suffers heartache and loss, but I never focused on his suffering. I never really got it. I’m not sure if I was oblivious or if it was easier just to breeze over those parts.

I loved the book so much that I went as far as internalising the dialogue and making certain character’s declarations into credos. Rereading it, I felt a prickling when the callous Nagasawa says to Watanabe, by way of farewell, resist self-pity.

Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Only arseholes do that .

This was one of my mantras. Something to live by. Something I had lived by. I might as well have tattooed it across my forearm. And yet somehow I forgot where I picked it up.

This prickling happened again when I re-read Nagasawa telling Watanabe about his reading habits; about his reluctance to read contemporary work.

If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.

For years, I only let myself read strange books by long-dead authors. Once, I triumphantly told my classmates how my favourite author was a semi-obscure Hungarian writer who doesn’t believe in paragraph breaks or full stops. In fact, just a few years after first reading Norwegian Wood , I began dismissing Murakami himself, since he was one of the most famous writers in the world, someone everyone else was reading.

I was thinking about Norwegian Wood  because my wife asked me to write a love story. She does this every now and then. Usually, I tell her it’s not going to happen and leave it at that. I don’t like talking about writing. Someone once said if you discuss the idea before you do the work you risk losing the magic. I still believe this, but my reluctance was something else. The truth is, writing a good love story must be about the hardest thing there is to do. The truth is I would be terrified.

Even so, she thinks our story is worth writing about. It goes down well at parties, and whenever she tells it (and she always tells it, she’s better at it than I am) whoever’s listening usually agrees. I won’t go into the finer details, but we were together, then she went away and we weren’t. Six years later we met again in New York. We met for dinner on a cold night two days into the new year. I got lost, and when I finally found the restaurant where she was waiting, I was too nervous to eat.

It didn’t matter. Our dinner lasted a week, then two more. The night before I was meant to fly home to Auckland, she told me to move to the US. Normally I would have laughed at the idea, but I didn’t. I wanted to be with her, and I actually could be, too. I had just finished my degree and it was pretty much the only time in my life I could get a visa; pretty much the only time in my life I could throw everything out the window and move across the world for a woman. So I did. After six years of complete silence and three weeks of drinking in deserted jazz clubs in the middle of winter (Murakami would be proud), I packed up my life and moved to America to be with her. And this, she believes, is the story I should write.

Sincce I was thinking about love, I decided to reread the first book that broke my heart. This time, I felt its loneliness more than anything. I remember that loneliness. I don’t know if it’s unique. I think it has something to do with finishing school, having had so much going on, having so many people around you every day, to suddenly being out there, on your own, with no one. You have to make an effort to reach people. I never did. I cut out a whole swathe of people and I couldn’t tell you why. I wanted things to be different. I wanted to be different. Most of my friends had moved cities and made new friends, created new lives. From where I was standing, they were all moving forward while I stayed put.

At times, I was disappointed with the simple prose. Pages go by that are completely reported. The plot rolls on. Months are breezed over. It wasn’t always compelling. Not much happens; it’s a melancholic ride through a man’s early 20s marred by suicide. He doesn’t wallow, though, and I admired the restraint. I was less impressed with other parts. I kept groaning when Watanabe talked. He’s so wooden. I know it’s not meant to be subtle – most of the characters comment on the way he talks – but it still grated. It felt artificial and unnecessary.

The whole time, I wondered most about Naoko, about who she really is. She never really becomes clear. You never get close. You know she’s going to die and you wait for it. It’s bleak, but somehow never feels too heavy. It’s always at a slight remove, always somehow slightly unreal. I don’t know how Murakami manages it. Perhaps it’s the remote, almost fairy-tale-like mountain where Naoko moves to, the strange sanatorium setting, or the fact she’s never really with Watanabe. She never lets him in. I still don’t know.

Strangely enough, it wasn’t until I was halfway through re-reading Norwegian Wood, that I realised I couldn’t remember how Naoko died or how Watanabe found out. I could remember so much about the book – the soft autumnal rain, the firefly on the roof, drinking beers on a balcony with a girl watching a building burn – but when it came to the dark heart of the novel, the reason why 38-year-old Watanabe is reflecting on his life, I drew a blank. It was an absence, a black hole. 

When I got to her death, I understood. I won’t spoil it, but I will say that her suicide isn’t dwelled upon. It is remote and matter-of-fact, once again simply reported; it’s a single line, a chapter opening that, had you been skimming, you might breeze over. 

O n a Tuesday night more than a decade after I first read it, I finished the book again. I couldn’t tell you what number re-read this was, but it must be close to ten. This time, I was living in an apartment in New York, without a backyard or tin roof. I didn’t know if it was raining. I never did. I was working a remote job and often wouldn’t go down onto the street until the early evening. I’d step out for the first time that day to find it had been pouring for hours and I’d had no idea.

After finishing Norwegian Wood, I sat there trying to find the will to go outside, to see what was going on. When my wife saw I had finished the book  she asked how it held up. I didn’t answer. Right then, I wasn’t thinking about the book but its impact on my life. I was thinking, if not for this book, I never would have spent hours searching the library for more Japanese novels; I never would have found Kenzaburo Oe, another Japanese writer who I ended up loving more than Murakami, who sent me down the long line of past Nobel Prize winners; and if not for Oe, I never would have moved on to South American writers and Northern European writers; and if not for them, I never would have read Karl Ove Knausgard on his miserable year studying writing, and if I’d never read Knausgard’s book then I never would have applied for my own masters; meaning I never could have moved to America; meaning I never would have got back together with the woman who is now my wife. So there was that.

But when she asked me a second time, I still wasn’t sure what to tell her. If she had asked me the same question before I’d re-read it, I could have listed a half dozen reasons why it was so damn good. Now I just felt depleted. I felt like an idiot. In one way the novel had led to her. But it had done so much else too. It had changed everything. I had picked it up and carried it forth like a cheerleader. For years I made myself into someone else because of it.

If I removed myself from the equation, I would say Murakami captured the agonising magic of your early 20s better than any book I’ve read. He did it beautifully. He made love cool again. And that’s fine, but I wasn’t thinking about the writer. I was thinking about the reader. One reader in particular. I was wondering how things would have gone, how my 20s might have been, if I’d thought about reading the way Bud Smith described it: a collaboration by two parties swimming towards each other, meeting somewhere in the middle. I was wondering what my life might have been like if I’d thought about reading like that. Who knows? All I know is, I held nothing back that first time I sat down on a rainy Saturday and opened its pages. And then? Well, then I swam too eagerly towards the book, and in doing so, I think I swam too far.

When Tammy Wynette was asked to write a memoir in her mid-30s, she initially declined, she said in an interview, because “I didn’t think my life was over yet.” The publisher responded: Has it occurred to you that in 15 years no one might care? She wrote the book. “Stand by Your Man: An Autobiography” (1979) was a hit.

The essayist and editor Joseph Epstein — whose memoir “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life,” is out now, alongside a greatest-hits collection titled “Familiarity Breeds Content” — has probably never heard Wynette sing except by accident. (In a 1993 essay, he wrote that he wished he didn’t know who Willie Nelson was, because it was a sign of a compromised intellect.) But his memoir illustrates another reason not to wait too long to commit your life to print.

There is no indication that Epstein, who is in his late 80s, has lost a step. His prose is as genial and bland, if comparison to his earlier work is any indication, as it ever was. But there’s a softness to his memories of people, perhaps because it was all so long ago. This is the sort of memoir that insists someone was funny, or erudite, or charismatic, while rarely providing the crucial details.

Epstein aw-shucks his way into “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” — pretending to be self-effacing while not being so in the least is one of his salient qualities as a writer — by warning readers, “I may not have had a sufficiently interesting life to merit an autobiography.” This is because he “did little, saw nothing notably historic, and endured not much out of the ordinary of anguish or trouble or exaltation.” Quickly, however, he concludes that his life is indeed worth relating, in part because “over the years I have acquired the literary skill to recount that life well.”

Here he is wrong in both directions. His story is interesting enough to warrant this memoir. His personal life has taken complicated turns. And as the longtime editor of the quarterly magazine The American Scholar, and a notably literate conservative culture warrior, he’s been in the thick of things.

He does lack the skill to tell his own story, though, if by “skill” we mean not well-scrubbed Strunk and White sentences but close and penetrating observation. Epstein favors tasseled loafers and bow ties, and most of his sentences read as if they were written by a sentient tasseled loafer and edited by a sentient bow tie.

He grew up in Chicago, where his father manufactured costume jewelry. The young Epstein was popular and, in high school, lettered in tennis. His title refers to being lucky, and a big part of that luck, in his estimation, was to grow up back when kids could be kids, before “the therapeutic culture” took over.

This complaint sets the tone of the book. His own story is set next to a rolling series of cultural grievances. He’s against casual dress, the prohibition of the word “Negro,” grade inflation, the Beat Generation, most of what occurred during the 1960s, standards slipping everywhere, de-Westernizing college curriculums, D.E.I. programs, you name it. His politics aren’t the problem. We can argue about those. American culture needs more well-read conservatives. The problem is that in his search for teachable moments, his memoir acquires the cardboard tone of a middling opinion column.

His youth was not all tennis lessons and root beer floats. He and his friends regularly visited brothels because, he writes, sex was not as easy to come by in the 1950s. He was kicked out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for his role in the selling of a stolen accounting exam to other students.

He was lucky to find a place at the University of Chicago, a place of high seriousness. The school changed him. He began to reassess his values. He began to read writers like Irving Howe, Sidney Hook, Midge Decter and Norman Podhoretz, and felt his politics pull to the right.

After college, he was drafted into the Army and ended up in Little Rock, Ark., where he met his first wife. At the time, she was a waitress at a bar and restaurant called the Gar Hole. Here Epstein’s memoir briefly threatens to acquire genuine weight.

She had lost custody of her two sons after a divorce. Together they got them back, and she and Epstein had two sons of their own. After their divorce, Epstein took all four of the boys. This is grist for an entire memoir, but Epstein passes over it quickly. One never gets much of a sense of what his boys were like, or what it was like to raise them. He later tells us that he has all but lost touch with his stepsons and has not seen them for decades.

He worked for the magazine The New Leader and the Encyclopaedia Britannica before becoming the editor of The American Scholar in 1975. It was a position he would hold for 22 years. He also taught at Northwestern University for nearly three decades.

At The American Scholar he began to write a long personal essay in each issue, under the pseudonym Aristides. He wrote 92 of these, on topics such as smoking and envy and reading and height. Most ran to 6,500 words, or about 4,000 words longer than they should have been.

Many magazine editors like to write every so often, to keep a hand in. But there is something unseemly about an editor chewing up acres of space in his own publication on a regular basis. Editorially, it’s a droit du seigneur imposition.

A selection of these essays, as well as some new ones, can now be found in “Familiarity Breeds Content.” In his introduction to this book, Christopher Buckley overpraises Epstein, leaving the reader no choice but to start mentally pushing back.

Buckley calls Epstein “the most entertaining living essayist in the English language.” (Not while Michael Kinsley, Lorrie Moore, Calvin Trillin, Sloane Crosley and Geoff Dyer, among many others, walk the earth.) He repurposes Martin Amis’s comment about Saul Bellow: “One doesn’t read Saul Bellow. One can only reread him.” To this he adds, “Ditto Epstein.” (Epstein is no Saul Bellow.) Buckley says, “Joe Epstein is incapable of writing a boring sentence.”

Well. How about this one, from an essay about cats?

A cat, I realize, cannot be everyone’s cup of fur.

Or this one, from an essay about sports and other obsessions:

I have been told there are people who wig out on pasta.

Or this one, about … guess:

When I was a boy, it occurs to me now, I always had one or another kind of hat.
Juggling today appears to be undergoing a small renaissance.
If one is looking to save on fuel bills, politics is likely to heat up a room quicker than just about anything else.
In tennis I was most notable for flipping and catching my racket in various snappy routines.

The essays are, by and large, as tweedy and self-satisfied as these lines make them sound. There are no wild hairs in them, no sudden deepenings of tone. Nothing is at stake. We are stranded with him on the putt-putt course.

Epstein fills his essays with quotation after quotation, as ballast. I am a fan of well-deployed, free-range quotations. So many of Epstein’s are musty and reek of Bartlett’s. They are from figures like Lord Chesterfield and Lady Mary Montagu and Sir Herbert Grierson and Tocqueville and Walpole and Carlyle. You can feel the moths escaping from the display case in real time.

To be fair, I circled a few sentences in “Familiarity Breeds Content” happily. I’m with him on his distrust of “fun couples.” He writes, “A cowboy without a hat is suitable only for bartending.” I liked his observation, which he borrowed from someone else, that a career has five stages:

(1) Who is Joseph Epstein? (2) Get me Joseph Epstein. (3) We need someone like Joseph Epstein. (4) What we need is a young Joseph Epstein. (5) Who is Joseph Epstein?

It’s no fun to trip up a writer on what might have been a late-career victory lap. Epstein doesn’t need me to like his work. He’s published more than 30 books, and you can’t do that unless you’ve made a lot of readers happy.
