You’d agree that organizing and planning goes a long way. I did the research and shortlisted the perfect homework planner apps for Android and iOS. Let’s check those out.

Homework Planner Apps for Students

1. student planner- homework agenda & notes.

The first app on the list is a simple homework and notes management app. It keeps track of homework, assignments, projects, and to-do lists. The layout is minimal, all the tasks are neatly organized with a colored bookmark for easy identification. You can mark a task complete and remove it from the pending list.

Courses can be added easily and color-coded as well. The calendar shows any upcoming deadlines so you can prioritize accordingly. The tasks have a progress bar that you can adjust as you make progress which enables you to get a quick summary without actually opening every task.

You can also break your assignments in small chunks as subtasks that would make finishing a task much easier and the progress bar will fill automatically. It also allows you to attach media files to your assignments or projects for easy access to the important information in one place.

homework planner apps- agenda

  • Progress bar
  • Deadline Reminders
  • Calendar View
  • No option to sync data to the cloud

Student Planner is a great app for all the students, it has all the necessary features like Deadline reminders, subtasks, progress bar, color-coded tasks, and courses. It can significantly increase your productivity when used regularly. You can get this app for free in the Play Store.

Install Student Planner- Homework Agenda ( Android )

2. Student Planner

Student Planner is another fast and simple homework management app which is wrapped by a beautiful and intuitive material designed UI. What Student Planner adds to the table is the inclusion of a schedule or time table which you can use to either store your class schedule or it might even be a study schedule for your exams.

You first start by adding your subject and the schedule then you can add an assignment or set a reminder. The due assignments are arranged as separate cards and can be swiped away once done with.

homework planner apps- Student Planner Android

  •  Simple and easy to get started with
  •  Fast and small in size
  •  Beautiful Minimal UI
  •  Option for Schedule
  • No sync/backup
  • Timetable implementation not perfect

I would recommend this app to anyone who is looking for a simple homework management app with timetable support and a minimal UI.

Install Student Planner ( Android )

Egenda is simple. Open the app, add all the classes or subjects to the app, and once that is set up, you have the option of adding a new Homework, Quiz, Project, or Test and choose the respective subject deadlines. The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

homework planner apps- Egenda Android

  •  Subject-wise sorting
  •  Calendar View
  • No timetable support

Egenda provides some great tools for Homework and Test planning and I am sure anyone would find them extremely convenient and useful. But keeping its single con in mind, go for this app if you are not too keen on having a schedule or timetable.

Install  Egenda  ( Android  |  iOS )

4. ChalkBoard

The next app on our list is ChalkBoard, which I found out to be a pretty smart homework planner app. Chalkboard strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and features.

Although the setup process is a little longer than the previous three apps, as you have to feed meticulous details about the classes, teacher, and schedule. It is worth the effort.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

homework planner apps- ChalkBoard Android

  • Proper Timetable
  • Ability to add teachers for subjects
  • View tomorrow’s classes as well as assignments/tests/quizzes
  • Smart features
  • Little longer to set up
  • No calendar view

If you are looking for a homework planner as well as a school planner, Chalkboard is the app as it strikes a great ground with almost all the features one might need while not being too bulky.

Install ChalkBoard ( Android )

5. School Planner

School Planner is a full-fledged planning application designed for students to manage their career as a student. Along with your homework and timetables, School Planner offers you to keep track of your grades and attendance, add contacts for teachers, add recorded lectures, and even multiple planners.

The app supports backing up of all your data via Google Drive, Calendar View along with a weekly report, attaching snapshots to your assignment reminders, student accounts from ClassViva, and a lot more. In spite of so many features, the app doesn’t feel slow at all and delivers a powerful performance with its beautiful design.

homework planner apps- School Planner Android

  • Full-fledged student companion
  • Feature-packed and free
  • Supports sync and backup
  • Widget Support
  • Tedious setup procedure
  • Big in size
  • Complex, not so smooth learning curve

While it is not for someone who is looking for a fast and easy way into homework management, School Planner is a great student companion app and serious students will surely get the most out of hit.

Install School Planner ( Android )

6. My Study Life

My Study Life comes with its own web app and syncs with the Android app, essentially making your data accessible from any device as long as it has a browser.

It implements a goal-centric circular tracker that shows your progress. The Calendar view combines your timetable, deadlines, and shows all your classes and assignments, projects in a single place.

homework planner apps- My Study Life Android

  • Refreshingly new UI

Who needs a messy assignment book when you have a study planner app? Instead of jotting down due dates on your calendar, take them with you on your smartphone.

Moreover, having an app at your fingertips can serve as a reminder to start studying or to complete an important assignment. Better yet, it's much easier to read and visualize when you use a template in an app.

Homework Planner Template

The best thing I can say about this homework planner is that my own kids like it enough to want me to print a copy for them each week. The design for this planner came from a mash-up of the techniques that my brother and I used in college to organize our time. I've refined the design based on feedback from my kids (one high-schooler and two home-schoolers).

How It Works : This planner combines two very useful tools for keeping track of your homework assignments, both on a single page. First, on the left is a homework check list for each of your classes. Use it to list the assignments, due dates, and the estimated time to complete each assignment. List upcoming exams and plan times to study. Second, on the right side you can plan your week to figure out how you will get everything done.

Printable Homework Planners

The following PDF files can be printed as needed. The main difference is in the weekly schedule because high-schoolers and home-schoolers tend to do their homework at different times of the day.

Description

This spreadsheet includes two separate worksheets with slightly different designs. The Homeschool design doesn't include the "time" column because we found it wasn't as critical to predict how much time a particular assignment would take. However, for high school and college, estimating the time to complete each assignment can be extremely helpful.

We designed it so that you can either print blank copies of the planner, or edit it electronically. You may be able to store and edit this planner on your mobile device if you are using Excel for iPad/iPhone or Google Sheets.

Tips for Students:

1. Customize the template: Using Excel or Word, enter your class names on the left and your typical weekly schedule. For example, use the schedule to highlight the times for each of your classes, your extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, etc.

2. Print blank copies: After customizing the template, you can print as many of these planner pages as you need, and you won't need to enter your typical weekly schedule each time.

3. Don't forget incomplete assignments: When switching to a new page each week, don't forget to go through your list of assignments and transfer the incomplete assignments to the new page.

4. Don't lose it: Keep your planner page in a folder that you always have with you. If you are worried about misplacing it, try taking a picture of it with your phone as a backup.

5. Use a mobile app: If you have a phone with the Excel or Word app or Google Docs app, and you are allowed to use a mobile device in school, you could try going paperless and editing the template on your phone. You could also try using one of the many "student planner" or "homework planner" mobile apps. The problem with this approach is that phones can be a huge distraction. If you are obsessed with Instagram or texting, it may be better to avoid using your phone if you want to get anything done.

Note to Teachers:

You are welcome to print copies of this planner to give to your students. The worksheet is pretty intuitive, but don't assume that students will know how to use it. Teach them about managing their time and help them learn how a planner can help.

One important thing that you can do to help your students is to give them a realistic estimate of how much time each assignment will take. If you get a lot of students complaining that an assignment took longer than you said, either cut back the work (if it was excessive), or use the feedback to give a better estimate next time around.

I often get asked what paper I recommend. For regular copy paper this 5 ream case of paper is one of the better deals. For cardstock I really like this card stock paper on amazon . It is much cheaper than I have found in stores and has a good thickness for most projects without being so thick that it jams the printer.

how to keep track of homework assignments

How to keep track of homework assignments

Katie Azevedo December 29, 2016 good habits , homework , productivity , study skills , time management

The first step to getting a good grade on an assignment is to … wait for it … do the assignment!

Simple, right?

Maybe, but only if you remember to do the assignment. For some students, knowing how to keep track of assignments and their due dates is a huge challenge. Here, I’m going to explain how to keep track of assignments and projects, and give you some tips for staying organized. A cool angle to this is that what I’m going to be talking about is completely applicable outside of school. So if you’re not a student, but you still have due dates and project deadlines – pretty much like any human – then this system is for you, too.

1.  Find a planner system and use it multiple times every day.

The KEY step for keeping track of homework, which I’ll get to next , is to write everything down. But before that happens, you need a place to write it all. You have three options here. 1) paper 2) digital 3) a combination of both. Personally, I use a combination of both. While I am a pen and paper person at heart, I do use Google calendar in addition to my paper calendar. I have a family and a business to run, so I need the digital aspect to be able to share calendars with other people. For my paper calendar I use the Staples Arc system . It’s cheap, simple, and super customizable.

I advise you to pick a system based on what’s convenient and easy, and not on what is cool. There are a gazillion list apps out there with fancy features — some of you may have heard of Evernote , the king of task management apps — but the goal is to keep it simple and use a system that you don’t have to stress about. If it’s too complicated, you won’t want to be bothered to even take it out when you need it. Whatever you pick, be sure it includes a monthly calendar and a daily calendar/agenda. Here’s why:

A monthly calendar allows you to see, at a glance, what assignments and appointments are coming up over the next few days or weeks or months. It’s key for long-term planning.

A daily calendar/agenda allows you to see and plan for what’s coming up tomorrow and in the very near future.

Whether you go for a dated calendar or an undated one (one you have to date yourself) is up to you. What size is up to you. (I use a half-sized one and a full-sized one!) Here’s a picture:

how to keep track of homework assignments

The cover and paper inside your planner is up to you. Whether you color-code your entries is up to you. (I do!) Make it something you’re excited to use, while keeping it simple.

It’s important to use your system multiple times a day because the more you use it, the more you trust it. And the more you trust it, the more it will work.

I’ve heard so many students say “I’ve tried using an assignment notebook and calendar, but it doesn’t work.” But when I ask them if they write everything down, they say no. And that’s why. So you’ve got to commit to your system. Use it multiple times every day. Get in the habit of checking it every morning or every night before bed so you know what’s on your agenda.

2.  Write everything down. And the operative word here is EVERYTHING.

I have a theory that I’ve lived by for the longest time: Our brains weren’t made for storing information, but are instead made for creating and processing information. (Lol … it turns out that I’m not a genius and that I didn’t invent this theory.) Several scientific studies actually support the idea that to a degree we have a maximum brain capacity. And if we use up all that capacity for storing information and trying to remember everything … then there will be no brain energy left to create, think and process. So by writing things down, we get them out of our heads, which frees up space for us to be smarter and more creative.

Plus, there is just no way on earth that we can remember every little detail of what’s due when, as well as the time and date of your next doctor’s appointment. If something comes up and you’re not sure whether to write it down, write it down!

Here’s what you should be keeping track of:

  • Daily homework assignments (short-term)
  • Project due dates (long-term)
  • Upcoming tests/quizzes
  • Books that have to be read by a certain point
  • Appointments (doctor, dentist, guidance counselor, coach, etc.)
  • Things you’re supposed to remember to do (ie: talk to math teacher)
  • After-school activities, sports (even if you have practice every day from 2:30-5, block out that time on your calendar)
  • Weekend activities

Here’s another important tip: write assignments down the moment their assigned, and write appointments down the moment their scheduled. Do NOT tell yourself that you’ll remember to write it down later. Doesn’t work! Plus – that defeats the purpose: you don’t want to use your brain to remember . If you don’t have your paper agenda with you when something comes up, then set a reminder in your phone to write it down later, or write the assignment down on a sticky note and put it somewhere you won’t forget. Then, transfer the information into your planner the moment you get home.

3.  Set up reminders.

Let’s say you have a project due in one week, so you write down “biology project due” on your calendar on the date it’s due. Sound good? No! No, because you don’t want to end up checking your calendar on the project’s due date and realizing “Oh crap! It’s due today!” So the hack for remembering to do the assignments you write down is this: remind yourself along the way.

You can do this several ways, depending on your system. If you’re using digital, like a phone, use the default reminder app to remind yourself of the project at least a few days before it’s due. You can even set up several reminders throughout the week. If you’re using a good old paper calendar, then in addition to writing down “project due” on the actual due date, write in several reminders to work on the project on the days leading up to the due date.

A reminder system also helps you manage your time for long-term assignments because it encourages you to work a little bit each day towards the larger goal.

4.  Keep your planner/calendar accurate and up-to-date.

Your homework management system is only going to work if it’s accurate. So you’ve got to be sure that you update your calendar and your agenda as things change. So if your teacher gives an extension or changes the due date of a project, or if your band concert or meeting is rescheduled, make those edits in your calendar. (Try to keep it neat if you’re using a paper system, so that might mean using whiteout. Messy on paper equals messy in the head.) And remember the rule: make these changes immediately if possible.

If you end up using a combination of a digital system and a paper system, make sure you sync the two systems daily. I have run into the problem where I’ve added an appointment in my phone, but then forgot to add it to my paper calendar, and then I totally forgot about it. Oops! So I make it a habit to review both calendars/agendas every night to make sure they both contain the same information.

How to keep track of homework assignments: Extra tip

There are going to be times when you fall off the bandwagon and let your system slip. You might go a few days or even a week without writing things down – either because you forget or you keep telling yourself that you’ll do it later. But don’t give up on your system. Just pick up where you left off and get back to writing down every little detail. Whenever you wander away from your system, bring yourself back to it, and don’t judge yourself.

Also, these moments can be learning opportunities! Whenever you stop using your agenda or calendar, ask yourself why? Why did you stop? What part of the system wasn’t working? If the system was easy enough to use, you wouldn’t have stopped. Is your notebook so big that it’s annoying to bring with you? Then get a smaller one. Are you not writing assignments down because you don’t have enough space in the “Daily Agenda” part of your notebook? Then get a notebook that gives you more room to write down your daily tasks. Did you think you were a techie, but find the app stuff too complicated? Or vice versa? Then switch systems. Modify as you go. You won’t come up with the perfect system right away, but you will instead figure out what works for you as you go. Be open to change.

#1 School Assignment Organization App

I am currently a sophomore in college and have been using this app since my sophomore year in high school. I cannot even imagine how i would stay organized without it. It is so easy to see what assignments need to be turned in, and i can also see my schedule day by day. I also uplaod pictures of needed pages in my textbook so i do not have to bring it home with me. The schools i have not had teachers that use the app to post assignments and it has still been very benneficial to me. you can fully use the app for free, but i choose to pay the annual fee which is very affordable at around just $5 i beleive. You can also sync your classes and assignments to your icloud calendar so it is all visible on your iphone. everything syncronizes easily between my devices and can even be accessed online from a school computer. In college i have gone to complete paperless work, where i have all my textbooks and nots on my ipad, and when i need to turn in an assignment i just print it off after completing it on my ipad. This app really helps with that where i can easily track all assignments that i have due right on my ipad, along with my notes and textbooks. I tried multiple different homework tracking apps and this is by far the best on the market.

Most useful app on Mac and iPhone

Mid-semester this spring, I had to reorganize my classes before starting two condensed courses on March 23. I searched for an app that would act as a digital homework planner with a clean interface, reminders, satisfying check boxes to click after completing assignments. Every traditional planner I’ve ever bought has ended up in the recycle bin so I figured it might be time to take my academics into the 21st century with some sort of organizer app geared specifically toward school. I found exactly that. This little widget has made my life exponentially more manageable and productive. The free version can do pretty much everything I would need it to do in order to stay organized. When I found out that the paid subscription is $4.99 for a year, I bought it to unlock the additional features like uploading documents, personalize the theme, but most importantly to support the developers who designed this app that has added much more than $4.99 of value to my life. I recommend myHomework to all of my classmates and friends. Truly a great investment in my own personal acadmic success. Thank you everyone at Instin, LLC.! You are doing great things. Cheers, Erik

I Love It, But...

I really enjoy this app - I use it everyday as HS student to keep organized with my classes. It has great features (I love the calendar, how you can preview your month with the tasks you've already put in, etc...) and I also enjoy the themes. The thing I love the most is the way it syncs between my iPhone and my Mac, so I can have my calendar everywhere! I plan to use this in college when I graduate at the end of this year. My only complaints are that it sometimes goes through phases of crashing (which can be so frustrating when you're trying to punch a deadline in as soon as the teacher verbally announces it in the middle of a lecture!), and the fact that you don't have the option to separate your tasks by time. By this I mean, just like in the previous homework app I used, it doesn't separate tasks by week, two weeks, three weeks, month, etc. I just feel like it would be more organized and nicer looking this way. When I have 6 tasks for the upcoming week and 3 that are over a month away in one place, it makes me feel cluttered - constantly reminding myself that "Oh, that isn't due until-" is a slight nuisance. May just be me but I'd love the option to organize things better in that way!

Organizing Homework With A Free Printable Assignment Tracker

Looking for a way to organize homework use this free printable assignment tracker to get organized for back to school..

Can you believe it’s back to school season already? Although I love summer, I have to admit that back to school is one of my absolute favorite times of the year.

Maybe this will change when I have school-age kids down the road and things are more hectic, but in this season of life, I love nothing more than wandering the school supply aisles at Walmart. Some women can never have enough shoes and handbags, I, on the other hand, can never have enough office supplies!

Many of you have asked me for ideas for getting organized for back to school, so I designed a printable assignment tracker for you today and also want to share the awesomeness of erasable FriXion pens available at Walmart.

Organizing Homework

No matter your age or the subject you are studying, there are always plenty of assignments and due dates to keep track of. And when you get busy, it’s all too easy to let an assignment slip through the cracks.

That’s where this free printable homework tracker comes in. I designed it with plenty of space to keep track of all of the deadlines and projects that are bound to start piling up once school begins.

free-printable-assignment-tracker

The beauty of this assignment planner is that it can be used in a few different ways, so use it in whatever way works best for you! You could use it as a master list for all of your assignments, or you could print a copy for each class and keep track of assignments specific to that subject.

However you prefer to organize your homework, the important thing is to write it down so you can manage due dates and remember everything. (Hopefully, this will help you avoid that dreaded pit in your stomach that you get when the teacher asked you to turn in your paper and you completely forgot to finish it!).

homework-tracker-free-printable

When it comes to homework, you definitely need a pen you can count on. One that writes smoothly and erases cleanly. One that gives you the power of infinite do-overs when you’re solving algebra equations and taking notes. And that’s where FriXion pens come in!

organized-assignment-tracker-worksheet-with-folders

You guys, I’m really impressed with these gel ink pens. Honestly. I’ve always been skeptical of erasable pens because I’ve never found one that erases cleanly, but the FriXion pens really do. Their ability to write smoothly and erase cleanly is the perfect combination for homework.

hand-writing-on-printable-homework-planner

Some classmates may have thought I went a bit overboard, but I was always that girl with the color-coded notes so it’s also important to me to have a great selection of pen colors for school.

The FriXion pens are available at Walmart in an array of color options. I personally chose the 10-pack of FriXion ColorSticks in bold colors (black, blue, green, pink, purple, red, silver and orange). These colors are perfect for color-coding class notes!

When you are shopping at Walmart for school supplies, be sure to pick up some of the erasable FriXion pens. Click here to check out the options available at Walmart.

Emily I can so relate to loving school supplies!! Since I no longer have school age kids, I decided to indulge my passion and just got back from a shopping trip to fill a backpack with school supplies for a child in need. Our local TV station, Boys and Girls Club, and a credit union sponsor the backpack drive. It seems like a win-win situation – a child gets all the supplies they need and I had fun shopping and didn’t bring home any more supplies for me (I have enough to last a while!)

That is such a wonderful way to give back, Susan! And what a great way to indulge your love of school supplies.

I’m with you! As an adult I still like to keep things color coordinated. #client

Homework in Middle School: Building a Foundation for Study Skills

In the middle school years, students begin to experience the benefits of homework, though it is difficult to determine how much good it does, particularly at a given age. And there is some debate on how much homework students need to receive that benefit.

Duke University’s Harris Cooper, one of the leading researchers on homework, says students enjoy genuine academic benefits from homework, including better comprehension and retention of subject matter. However, while the benefit is clear for high school students and beyond, the degree to which homework helps middle school students is a matter of some contention.

Homework starts to prove its value for middle school students.

  • It’s difficult to tell if homework helps high achievers do well, or if they do their homework because they are high achievers.
  • It’s challenging to determine how much homework students actually do. Most homework studies rely on self-reported data, which means students can easily misstate the quantity of time they spend on homework.
  • Many studies use test scores to measure academic success, which, as many researchers point out, is an inherently problematic form of measurement.

Teachers should assign an appropriate amount of homework

While there is still much discussion on the effectiveness of homework, research asserts that the 10-minute rule per grade level holds true for middle school students. This means that students might receive anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes of homework each evening.

In middle school, students’ higher academic achievement starts to correlate with completing homework. However, this correlation fades if homework lasts longer than that.  Indeed, giving more than 90 minutes of homework has been shown to have detrimental effects on students.

Students need time away from their studies to relax and engage in social, extracurricular and family activities. When given too much homework, students lose this time and suffer the effects of stress and sleep deprivation, which has proved to reduce academic performance.

Purposeful assignments

Teachers who give homework must consider the purpose and value of the assignments. While elementary school homework can build confidence and engage students in the subject matter, middle school homework needs a more specific purpose.

Certain subjects require practice homework, such as vocabulary, which often requires drills. Other homework requires reading or more complicated skill work. Still, there is a growing belief among researchers that even when homework serves a clear and distinct purpose, less is more.

Homework should be clearly connected to learning outcomes and shouldn’t overwhelm students so much they are unable to actively participate in their lives beyond the walls of the classroom. Teachers should carefully consider how much practice students need and design homework to effectively meet those goals within the shortest duration possible.

Ultimately, even if the benefit margin is small for middle school students, there are other advantages of completing homework. Some researchers argue that at least anecdotally, students develop important study skills that will benefit them in high school and college, and they learn the value of time management and responsibility.

Colchester middle school coach steps down after alleged use of racial slur

(WFSB) - A Colchester middle school track coach is stepping down after she allegedly made a racial slur toward a member of another team.

The school district said it happened at a recent track meet against a school in Middletown.

A caregiver of a child on Beman Middle School’s track team in Middletown said the Colchester coach called her child a “gorilla” at a recent track meet.

The meet between Beman Middle School and William Johnston Middle School from Colchester was held in Middletown on Monday.

The incident is being investigated by both school districts, Colchester schools released a statement saying the coach is stepping down, but there is still some disagreement over what actually happened.

The child’s caregiver said the slur was said after the child had just finished one of her races.

However, in a statement made by Colchester schools, officials said: “Specifically, our investigation determined that the Beman students were singing a song named ‘Faneto.’ by Chief Keef. Thinking that the Beman students were attempting to playfully interact with her, the WJJMSCoach responded by saying, ‘You are.’”

At a press conference held by the CT Parents Union the organization and caregiver responded to Colchester’s findings.

“Lyrics exact words were the coach from Colchester called me a gorilla. She didn’t say this woman said “you are” or anything of that nature. Her exact words were that she called me a gorilla,” said Latoya Dickerson, the child’s caregiver.

“I’m hoping that even if this teacher stepped down that she could work somewhere else,” said Gwen Samuel with the CT Parents Union.

The statement went on to say that with the coach stepping down, Colchester’s track team will still have adequate support to end the season.

You can read the full statement below:

Earlier this week, the William J. Johnston Middle School Track team of Colchester participated in a meet with Beman Middle School of Middletown. Based upon our preliminary investigation, at one point during that meet, there was an interaction between one of the WJJMS coaches, and members of the Beman team. Specifically, our investigation determined that the Beman students were singing a song named “Faneto,” by Chief Keef. Thinking that the Beman students were attempting to playfully interact with her, the WJJMS Coach responded by saying, “You are.” The WJJMS coach states that she intended for that to be a question, and didn’t realize that anyone from Beman was offended. Further she states that had she known, she would have immediately spoken to the Beman coach and apologized to the student-athletes. According to Colchester Superintendent of Schools, Daniel Sullivan the district is committed to working with the coach, and all members of the school community relative to implicit bias to ensure that the Colchester Schools are bastions of safety and inclusivity for all. “Our coach has made it clear that she feels terrible that a student and her family are hurt by the interaction at the meet. Further, she has decided to step down as a coach. She indicates that coaching is about kids, and the spotlight should always be on the student-athletes and not the coach.” The district will ensure that the team has adequate support to finish their season. The Colchester Public Schools are always dedicated to cultivating a school environment where every student feels accepted, connected, and prepared to learn. We firmly uphold equity, diversity, and inclusion as core principles within our school district, guaranteeing access for all. We stand in solidarity, honoring individuals of every background and identity, embracing diversity in races, socio-economic statuses, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, religions, nationalities, and abilities. We will use this experience as a teachable moment for all of our staff and apologize to anyone that was impacted by this event. Barring any new information, the Colchester Public Schools will have no further comment on this matter. Colchester Public Schools

CT middle school track coach steps down after allegedly calling student a racial slur

Colchester public schools said the coach didn't realize she had offended anyone and feels terrible about it., by jolie sherman • published 2 hours ago • updated 1 hour ago.

A track coach from William J. Johnston Middle School in Colchester has stepped down after being accused of calling a Black female student from Middletown a racial slur.

Colchester Public Schools told NBC Connecticut in a statement that students were singing an explicit song named "Faneto" by Chief Keef to which the coach responded with the words "You are."

The school said the coach didn't realize she had offended anyone, feels terrible about it, and decided to step down.

On Thursday afternoon, the Connecticut Parents Union came together outside Middletown’s Board Education to discuss this incident. The student and her guardian were there along with the president of the Middlesex County NAACP.

"We will hold the adults accountable in our public schools because safety and ensuring a welcoming school environment is shared responsibility," Gwen Samuel, president of the CT Parents Union, said.

Samuel said she was not only upset by the coach's actions, but also Middletown Public Schools for not letting the student's family know what had happened in a timely fashion.

The student's caregiver, Latoya Dickerson, told the CT Parents Union the incident took place Monday night during a track meet at Beman Middle School in Middletown. The student reported the incident to her coach right away, but Dickerson said she wasn't notified by the school until much later.

“I waited Tuesday and didn’t receive a call. I ended up having to send an email in order to receive a call," Dickerson said.

The caregiver was adamant the girl reported it was the coach who said the slur.

The student was at the event but didn't want to appear on camera. Instead, she covered her face with a poster that read: "Words Matter."

“As a Black mother, I’ve never experienced anything like this, and it really put me in a very uncomfortable and frustrating situation," Dickerson said.

Middletown Public Schools say they’re investigating.

"The district of Middletown Public Schools is firmly committed to creating and maintaining a school district where everyone feels seen, safe and supported...Racist, derogatory, disparaging and offensive language has no place in our schools, and we do not condone it in any way," the school district said.

Colchester Public Schools also mentioned that "the district will ensure that the team has adequate support to finish their season."
