Introduction: How to Make Hand Animation in MS Powerpoint

I enjoy making animations in PowerPoint, but the custom animation settings are limited. Today I will show you how to make more complex hand animation in MS PowerPoint. You will need... -A computer with PowerPoint 2007 or higher (This will work on some versions before 2007, but 07 has much better graphics) -Patience -Time (5-15 minutes) -(Depending on how ambitious you get with effects) A good graphics card...

Step 1: Let's Start With the Plan...

There are many factors that can be changed in PowerPoint 2007. For example... Shape Color Lighting Shadow Depth Bevel Rotation This instructable will go over all of those.

Step 2: Preparing the Slide

To animate there are a few preparations... 1. On the ribbon go to Home>Layout (In the slides portion)>Blank 2. On the ribbon go to Animations>Advance Slide Uncheck On mouse click Check Automatically after Set the value to 00:00 if it isn't already 3. On the ribbon go to Animations and make sure that the slide transition is set to No Transition

Step 3: Simple Graphics (Color Shape)

To start animating we're going to need to have something to animate. To create a basic shape: On the ribbon go to Home>Drawing>More (The down arrow with a line over it)>(Select a shape) Coloring: 1. Click on the shape you created 2.Locate (on the ribbon) Home>Drawing>Shape Fill 3.Click shape fill 4. Select either a basic color, gradient (blend), photograph, or a texture.

Step 4: 3d Rotation and Basic 3d Shaping

Now that we have a shape lets show how to let it be 3d... Go on the ribbon, and go to Home>Drawing>Shape Effects>3d Rotation>3d Rotation Options... Now a window opens up. You can manually adjust the rotation or chose from some preset rotations. Perspective adjusts how 3d an object looks in an environment. Want to turn a square into a cube? Or a circle into a cylinder? Just add depth! In the 3d Rotation Options window, select the 3-D Format Tab. A lot of things we aren't using right now come up. Locate the Depth box in the middle on the right. I usually test numbers like 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 and then fine tune from there. Keep the 3d Options page open for the next step!

Step 5: Bevel (Advanced 3d Shaping)

Adding depth won't work every time. What if you want to make a cone or a sphere instead of a cylinder? Or a pyramid instead of a cube? Adding a Bevel will solve your problem. To add a bevel just select a bevel from the list. There should be two boxes one says Height, and the other says Width. Height is how far the bevel comes out of the shape. Width is the slope of the bevel.

Step 6: Lighting/Shadows

Nothing makes your graphics look more real than proper lighting and shading. Lighting: In the 3d Format tab Find lighting at the bottom. You can select different lighting levels but tones are limited. You can also adjust the angle at which light strikes the object. Materials are very useful when it comes to making things look real. They adjust reflection of light to make metal shiny, and powder transparent. Shadows: Shadows compliment lighting to make amazing picture quality. However the shadows only show the basic 2d object you started with. To make a basic shadow, go to the shadow tab and start with a preset in the box at the top. I always adjust the shadow to about 180 degrees away from where the light hits the object, as this makes it look more realistic.

Step 7: Animation

Now that we have the graphics created its time to start animating. This is one of the simplest steps. However it is the most boring one. Right click the slide you are working on and select duplicate slide. If duplicate slide is not in the menu try again. In the new slide select the object you want to move or alter, and well move or alter it in any way. For example... Rotate it Bevel it (or change bevel settings) Resize it Turn the lighting... (and shadow) Just be aware that this is the long part. You may want to save every so many slides. 

Step 8: The End...

Now that you have finished view the show by either pressing F5 or if your computer is like mine (Too many media keys) go to the ribbon and look for Animation>Start slide show>From Beginning As always comment any problems you run into while animating, and I will try to answer them soon. If you want to take advantage of Microsoft Office's draw tools in PowerPoint, you might add an animation to your drawing to make it a useful demonstration.

This lets you create anything from a basic letter to teach a student to write to a fully detailed mockup to show your team a process.

When you visit the Draw tab in PowerPoint, you'll see all of your ink tools at the top. You can pick a pen, pencil, or highlighter, choose the line thickness, and pick a color or pattern.

Each continuous line you use becomes an element on the slide. You can select and move these elements using the arrow on the left side of the ribbon.

To animate one of these elements, select it and head to the Animations tab.

With the drawing or part of the drawing selected, pick either "Replay" or "Rewind" in the Animation box on the ribbon. Replay shows your drawing from start to finish while Rewind shows it from finish to start.

You'll only see these animation options for drawings you create with the ink tools.

Click "Preview" on the left side of the ribbon to see the animation in action. You should see your drawing as if you were creating it for the first time.

If you want to animate an entire drawing that contains more than one piece, simply select each additional piece in the order you want to display them and apply the Replay or Rewind effect.

You can then use the tools in the Timing section of the ribbon to pick how to Start the animation on the slide, the Duration for how quickly the animation moves, and the Delay to hold off on the animation for a few seconds.

Along with the Replay and Rewind animations specific to the ink and drawing tools, you can apply other effects to your drawing if you like. Select the drawing or part of it, click "Add Animation" in the Advanced Animation section of the ribbon, and choose the additional effect.

Keep in mind that animations display in the order you apply them. To adjust this order, select the animation number and use the Move Earlier or Move Later button on the right side of the ribbon. You can also open the Animation Pane and drag the effects to rearrange them .

But for the rest of this tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a one-of-a-kind video from scratch.

In the example below, add your own images so it looks like the person is scrolling through something of yours. Think things like products from your ecommerce shop or pages on your website.

How to hand-draw a presentation: Visualiser

I’ve been playing around with different ways of creating visuals, and I’ve spent some time with the Genee Vision 150 an entry level (£250) document camera – or more appropriately, a Visualiser !

The blurb on the Genee website tells you what it is:

“The Genee Vision 150 is a digital ICT presentation and teaching resource that directly connects to a P.C. and/or Interactive Whiteboard, Projector or LCD screen. It can pick up any kind of material, whether it be photographs, books or 3D objects effortlessly and provides a high resolution output signal for video and data projectors, monitors or interactive whiteboards. It has a range of features including, a 2 mega pixel CMOS camera, auto-focus, rotating head to capture images from different angles, 4x optical zoom and 10 x digital zoom and USB port.”

However more interestingly (and the way I prefer to utilise the hardware in the office), you can record the video and then manipulate the footage in any basic video editing software. In doing this, you can create hand-drawn videos.

The key factor with this visualiser is the position of the camera – the camera can point above the page you are working on, and allow you to easily film sketching and writing. With the visualiser set up in this way, you can quickly create quirky animations with surprising ease.

This particular Genee visualiser has an external light source that keeps the working area well lit – improving the video capture. Some of the higher spec visualisers have backlit working areas, which would give greater results – but could restrict your working area.

For the short piece I created above, I opted for  Windows Live Movie Maker  to capture and edit my footage; speeding up the film is a simple case of selecting the appropriate speed from a drop down box. I then used Brainshark to upload, add music to, and share the animation – a very quick process!

Now, is the Genee Vision 150 the way to go for animated visuals? I’m not sure. The camera is aimed at the teaching profession and its robust build demonstrates this, however the video quality isn’t fantastic and you can’t adjust the height of the camera much, so it can limit your working space.  You could easily pick up a video camera and tripod to achieve better results (we will talk about this at a later date!) – add a light box and you’d be producing dynamic hand-drawn animations in no time.

The interesting thing for me regarding the use of a document camera is that you get a very unique end result – actual video of drawings coming to life. Watching pictures take shape is very engaging. Using this filmed technique in a standalone animation piece could be really powerful.

As with anything like this, you’ll definitely need some natural ability (and patience) to produce animations that are impressive, particularly if you wanted to use the animation created in a professional setting – i.e. your company homepage. If you wanted to create an animation piece that was standalone using a visualiser (and some creative talent!) this will give you this option.

This type of animation would be perfect for lead generation and if you don’t own a visualiser or have the time and creative talent, BrightCarbon’s Dynamic Animation service would be the best place to start if you were interested in producing an animation for your own website. Overall the two things I’ll take away from this experiment; always try something new (it’s pretty fun) and doing something different, whether it’s hand-drawn, interactive or just a little left of centre, will help engage your audience a lot more effectively than a standard bullet point filled presentation.

Using Hand Drawn Graphics in Your presentation: Why and How

Kids love drawing at an early age. From doodling with crayons to later learning and utilizing other utensils, we’re innately drawn to art and want to create it.

Unfortunately, as in the case of young children, adults are not all equal in the artistic ability department. That is one of the reasons why our master designer Izabela, started creating these  Hand drawn presentation graphics .

We want to help people who don’t have the time and skills to draw their own graphics. To allow everybody to create presentations with this visually engaging handwritten style . Our own presentation experience proved to us that various sketched-out graphics catch the eye. Beyond the unconscious pull of artistic elements, there are other motives for using hand-drawn, creative styles when building presentations. Adding scribbled or hand-drawn diagrams can make your documents look more interesting, and seem more personalized. The Power of Hand-Drawn Graphics

The goal of creating these handcrafted graphics was to allow presenters to give their projects personality and tap into their creative side . We wanted to form a toolbox based on our expertise and feedback from our community to build something you could use for any presentation.

Whether your presentations need charts, graphs, or filled tables – by using a simple hand-drawn mark  you can emphasize the details and ideas. That is why our sets include a variety of items such as arrows, lines, circles, charts, graphs, word balloons, and even people who can help illustrate whatever concepts you need.

How You Can Make the Most Impact with Presentation

In order to make the most impact, you should follow the path of Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds. In his book, he recommends that  each slide should represent one idea . Even if your slide needs to contain a lot of information to be displayed or a large field of text, you should only focus on one key message to have the most impact. This is true for presentations filled with charts, graphs, tables, or passages of text. When you need to highlight specific, key data hand-drawn elements are perfect!

You can underline information using ovals, point it out using arrows, or utilize speech balloons to accentuate what you need to say. The best part is that design elements are completely customizable so you can make the sketched graphics match your branding or style of presentation.

Four Ways to Use Hand Drawn Graphics in Your Projects

If you are not inspired yet, check out some of the ways we’ve been told people use our handwritten elements and the way we use them every day:

• Underlining Scribbles – ( Arrows, ovals, speech balloons, etc. ) These are used to highlight information the same way you might if you were working on a tangible, paper document.

• Illustrative Icons – ( People, charts, etc. ) They allow you to visualize your theme. Using these, you can enable people who are unfamiliar with your topic to create a mnemonic association to better remember the topic and content on your slide.

• Progress Indicators – ( Timelines ) – These are to indicate plans, and projects, or even share the outline of your presentation in an organic way around the progression of time.

• Diagrams – ( Charts, graphs, pieces of charts & graphs ) – Alternately, you may use the elements to create your very own charts and illustrations to represent your own process, structure, or relationship.

The motive of all of the items in our hand-drawn sets, from lines to pie charts, is to make your presentations more memorable and interesting for viewers.

Using hand-drawn graphics beyond PowerPoint slides

Notice that the title says to use hand-drawn graphics in projects, not just presentations. Although we’ve been talking about how our handwritten icons can be used to embellish presentations, they have also been utilized successfully in eBooks and blog posts.

We use it in many places on our own infoDiagram blog – see scribble illustrations, for example, Seth Godin’s  blogs.

Remember the design rules applies also with freehand drawing

Of course, when you’re using any kind of artistic embellishments you need to remember the importance of design consistency . Learn three design hints to make sure your diagrams are professional-looking and remain readable.

Presentations that combine too many style elements can distract the audience. (The goal is to highlight your message and create mnemonic devices for your content, not to detract from it!).

Therefore we suggest

• using no more than two handwritten styles per presentation. For example: Only use charcoal or ink style elements, but not all together.  The same goes for fonts, stick to 1-2 fonts.
• Have enough white space . Let the slide breathe – leave margins from the slide edge and don’t put elements too close together.
• Keep alignment and equal distribution of elements, e.g. if your icons of the flowchart are in one vertical or horizontal line, they should not jump around by a few pixels.
• And be careful with resizing the elements – keep them proportional, to avoid the “sun to egg” effect. With PowerPoint there’s a simple trick – hold Ctrl when resizing the vector icon.

If you’ve watched Untamed Science videos lately, you’ll have noticed that we’ve been doing a lot of hand-drawn, sketch-style animations. These animations can be done in a few different ways, but I’m going to show you what I think is by far, the easiest.

Hand-drawn Animations – Background

Animations in the past were created with anywhere from 8 to 12 drawn animations per second. That means that if you’re rending out a 24 frame per second movie, then each drawing is on screen for 2 or 3 frames. In today’s digital world we can simulate that effect in three different ways.

• Create 3 different images in photoshop and cycle them so that they are on screen for roughly .2 of a second. At 24fps, I find that each image should stay on for 5 frames.
• Create one image and use Effects>Turbulent Displace in AE to simulate the hand drawn effect
• Screen capture your hand drawing and add a type sketch filter in your editing program (such as in FCPX)

How to Get Started in Hand Drawn Animations

If you have never done hand drawn animations, it really is super easy. I did the whole process in this short tutorial.

The main things you’ll need here are:

• A screen capture software such as Camtasia .
• A drawing application such as Photoshop .
• A tablet to draw with such as the Wacom tablets .
• An editing program to put it all together in, such as FCPX .
