The 'I Understood The Assignment' TikTok Audio Explained
A social media trend has reached peak popularity whenever brands start participating in it; by the time junior creatives and social media interns finish pitching and explaining a trend for approval, it's probably already been seen on every platform. So, with that in mind, it should be easy to backtrack the timeline of a trend to learn more about it when a brand joins in on the fun. One glaring exception is the Duolingo Owl â that's one up-to-date bird.
McDonalds' "I understood the assignment" era on Twitter began in the second half of 2021. So did Starbucks '. With a calculation based on conjecture, the trend can be traced back to the beginning of 2021. We looked to Know Your Meme for confirmation, and it turns out we were right. This is what high school teachers meant when they said that we'd use math after graduating.
This particular phrase has garnered extreme attention across all social media platforms. On TikTok , videos submitted under the "I understood the assignment" hashtag have received more than 600 million views; an excess of 30,000 posts wear it on Instagram . But what does it mean? And why is there an entire song dedicated to it? Read on to learn more.
The 'I understood the assignment' trend has been used by celebrities
How was the "I understood the assignment" trend created? In March 2021, a Twitter user @thering26 posted stills of Uma Thurman in numerous acting roles. "Uma Thurman will always understand the assignment," the accompanying text read. Soon, the phrase and meme format spread across Twitter like wildfire; it is used to describe someone who knows how to get the job done (via Know Your Meme ). The meme format is particularly popular for talking about actors who can pull off very different roles with top-notch acting.
A few months later, artist Tay Money put a new spin on the trend. She released a song that claimed she understood " The Assignment ." The artist herself used a part of the song that said "I understood the assignment" on TikTok. This led to a trend of people posting accomplishments and stories that proved that they knew what was expected of them and went above and beyond (via Know Your Meme ).Â
Even celebrities hopped on the trend. Taylor Swift used it to promote "All Too Well" (via YouTube ) and basically immortalized the phrase. There are currently around 250 million views on the "the assignment" hashtag on TikTok . It also led to the creation of another relatable sound that remixes Tay Money's song with Reese Witherspoon in "Legally Blonde" saying, " Actually, I wasn't aware that we had an assignment ." And that's how one meme took over the internet.Â
Tay Money Understood "The Assignment"
Tay Money releases her new single "The Assignment" after weeks of teasing it on TikTok.
North Texas-born rapper Tay Money has her official debut studio album coming later this year and she's letting all her fans know that she's confidently going to take over the game once it's out, understanding "The Assignment" with her latest single release.
After weeks of teasing the record on social media, the 28-year-old rising star has come through with "The Assignment." It was only a matter of time before somebody came and made a viral track out of this saying, and Tay Money managed to do it first... Duh!
With big moves on the way for this year, check out Tay's new single "The Assignment" below and let us know what you think.

TikTok explores what it truly means to 'understand the assignment'
You've probably seen the phrase "understood the assignment" used to death on social media. Here's why everyone is saying it. The slang term is a popular way to praise someone who is going above and beyond to do a good job. According to Urban Dictionary, "understood the assignment" means, "a phrase used when someone is giving it 110% ... Whether itâs what theyâre doing, what theyâre wearing, someone who is really on top of their s***" . In the Twitter trend, users pay tribute to their favorite actors and actresses who've been able to pull off a slew of eclectic roles. TikTok tends to go along with Urban Dictionary's definition, rather than focusing on celebrities

Where Did The Video Of The Raccoon Dancing In A Circle Come From? The Russian Meme Explained
A video of an adorable baby raccoon vibing out in a fish eye lens has become every EDM lover on TikTok's spirit animal. Internet users posting the clip and trying to sync up the raccoon's little waving claws to the beat of their favorite song, even as the animal spins across the screen barely aware of how famous he is about to become.
Over in Russia, the video of the raccoon spinning in a circle while bopping to EDM music is already a viral meme, with some people trading in footage of their own pets in place of the critter. But where did the video of the raccoon even come from, and how did it come to be used like the famous CatJAM meme from 2020? Here's a little history lesson on the raccoon dancing in a circle .
Where Did The Video Of The Baby Raccoon Originate?
The video of the cute baby raccoon dancing in a circle first appeared on TikTok in late September 2023. In a video posted by TikToker @fleksa30, the raccoon can be seen vibing to the song "Kak Dela?" by MZLFF & LIDA.
As the tempo of the music rises, the raccoon appears on the screen in a little beige circle, his claws popping out as he spins along the edges of the lens. The video gathered over 9 million views on TikTok in the months since it was posted.

How Did The Raccoon Dancing In A Circle Video Become A Meme?
The video did not gain traction online until March 2024, but EDM producer Blage did post the video paired with his own music in February, raking in over a million likes in the process.
But it wasn't until March that the dancing raccoon clip came to be used as a meme, with TikToker @malykha2114 posting the raccoon as part of a video where he bragged about the sound system in his car. The next day, TikToker @lowbass_96 showed what music blasts out of their speakers using the raccoon as a helpful guide. Both videos neared a million views within a month of being posted.

https://www.tiktok.com/embed/v2/7344556995313208596
These videos set off a firestorm of raccoon dancing clips, eventually inspiring parodies such as the one posted by @anastasiya_guliyta featuring her puppy.

'Tortured Poets' Music Video Drops Tonight. What to Know About Taylor Swift's New Double Album
Swift's surprise double album is already breaking records as the most streamed album in a single day on Spotify this year.
If there's one thing Taylor Swift will do, it's surprise her fans with something new. That was certainly the case when the superstar dropped not one, but two new albums, The Tortured Poets Department and its surprise companion The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. And if that wasn't enough, we're also getting the music video for the album's lead single, Fortnight, featuring Post Malone, on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
In total, Swifties got 31 new songs on streaming last night, including the four bonus tracks that were previously exclusive to the CD variant editions of the record. Swift described the album on her Instagram as a reflection of "a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time -- one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure." The album's already breaking records -- it's the most streamed album in a single day for 2024, Billboard reports.
Read more : Apple Music vs. Spotify: How to Decide
Swift announced The Tortured Poets Department after winning her 14th Grammy award in February. Since the album's announcement, Swift unveiled four variants of The Tortured Poets Department during the most recent leg of The Eras Tour . Additionally, a mysterious YouTube Short was posted to Taylor's account, encouraging fans to join the "For a Fortnight Challenge."
Here's everything you need to know about listening to The Tortured Poets Department. We'll keep updating this story with any last-minute announcements and surprises that Swift undoubtedly has in store. For more, here's how to stream The Eras Tour concert film and best music streaming services of 2024 .
How to stream Taylor Swift's new album, The Tortured Poets Department
You'll be able to stream The Tortured Poets Department on your streaming service of choice. Both Spotify and Apple Music subscribers are currently able to stream The Tortured Poets Department, as well as YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Pandora and Tidal.
Additionally, fans can stream The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology on their streaming service of choice. TTPD: The Anthology contains all 31 songs that Swift released early this morning. You can see all the options at Swift's link tree here .
Tracks and collaborators on The Tortured Poets Department
The Tortured Poets Department has 16 brand-new songs and four variant-specific bonus tracks. Post Malone and Florence & The Machine both appear on the album, and Swift teamed up with long-time friend Jack Antonoff and recent collaborator Aaron Dessner on her latest record.
This record has several solo writing credits for Swift. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys and Who's Afraid of Little Old Me were both penned solely by the superstar. With the release of TTPD: The Anthology, Swift adds The Black Dog, imgonnagetyouback, Peter and The Manuscript to her solo songwriting credits.
The standard tracklist for the album is as follows:
- Fortnight (featuring Post Malone)
- The Tortured Poets Department
- My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
- So Long, London
- But Daddy I Love Him
- Fresh Out the Slammer
- Florida!!! (featuring Florence & The Machine)
- Guilty as Sin?
- Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?
- I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)
- I Can Do It with a Broken Heart
- The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
- The Alchemy
- The Black Dog
- imgonnagetyouback
- The Albatross
- Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus
- How Did It End?
- So High School
- I Hate It Here
- thanK you aIMee
- I Look in People's Windows
- The Prophecy
- The Manuscript
The first 16 songs were expected as part of the release of The Tortured Poets, but at 2 a.m. on April 19, Swift surprised fans with a double album release. Songs 17 through 31 make up the second half of The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.
How to find The Tortured Poets Department on CD and vinyl
There are four confirmed variant editions of TTPD, named after the bonus track each will include: The Bolter , The Albatross , The Black Dog and The Manuscript . While the variants are available for sale on Swift's website, fans can also find them at Target. These do not include the extra 15 songs included in TTPD: The Anthology.
The majority of the variant editions are available as CDs, including The Bolter, The Albatross and The Black Dog. The fourth variant edition, named after the bonus song The Manuscript , is available as a CD and on vinyl in phantom clear or ghost white colors only at Target. Swift also held preorders for vinyl bundles of the other variant editions (The Bolter, The Albatross and The Black Dog) that included a deluxe CD and cassette, but those were only available until April 12.
In every social media post that Taylor Swift has made, she includes the same preorder link , which includes other retailers besides her website and Target, like Barnes & Noble. At Target, you can buy each CD individually for $14, and The Manuscript vinyl is $46. There is not currently a place where you can find all four of the bonus songs on the same CD, which is why completists and collectors ought to be prepared to drop some cash .
How do I stream bonus songs and The Tortured Poets Anthology?
Good news: As part of the 2 a.m. double album release, the four confirmed bonus songs are included in TTPD: The Anthology. So now you don't need to buy each of the four variant editions on CD and vinyl to listen to The Bolter, The Albatross, The Black Dog and The Manuscript. TTPD: The Anthology is available wherever you stream music.
The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology has yet to see a physical release, though there is a digital download available for $15 on Swift's website. So fans and collectors will still need to buy the variant physical copies of the album if you want to hear the four bonus tracks. We'll update this story if Swift releases a physical version of TTPD: The Anthology. You may hear clips of the album on TikTok as Swift recently agreed to allow some of her songs back on the app.
This isn't how Swift has previously handled bonus song releases. With her last original album Midnights in 2022, she dropped songs in stages: the original album, a 3 a.m. release with seven more songs, then haphazardly released singles on CD and vinyl. There are three versions of the album on streaming, but there still isn't one central album -- on streaming, CD or vinyl -- where you can listen to all of the songs from the Midnights era. So it's safe to say that Swift took the shorter route this tiime.
What to know about the alleged leak of The Tortured Poets Department
On April 18, just a day before the album was due to drop, the BBC reported that there had allegedly been a leak of Swift's latest album. The leak has not been confirmed or denied by Swift's camp, but fans online have encouraged one another not to listen to the new album until the official release by Swift. In addition, X (formerly Twitter) has banned searches for "Taylor Swift leak" much like the platform did when AI-generated explicit images of Swift circulated earlier this year.
While some fans online claimed to have listened to the leak, we recommend that you stream the album on Spotify or Apple. Not Clicking on links advertising a leaked copy of the album might not be safe . Bad actors are likely to capitalize on fans' excitement for the album, and those links could potentially be dangerous viruses or explicit content.

Taylor Swiftâs New Album Features What Fans Are Calling A âKim Kardashian Diss Trackâ â Here Is A Breakdown Of Every Apparent Dig
At one point in the song, titled "thanK you aIMee," fans are convinced that Taylor referenced the moment Kim and her eldest daughter, North, danced to her song "Shake It Off" in a now-viral TikTok.
BuzzFeed Staff
If the release of The Tortured Poets Department wasnât already exciting enough, Taylor Swift has surprised fans by unveiling an extra 15 songs on the long-awaited project!
And believe it or not, one of these new songs seemingly sheds light on Taylorâs age-old feud with Kim Kardashian .
To quickly summarize the context of their feud: Taylor and Kim clashed back in 2016, when Kimâs then-husband, Kanye West , released his song âFamous,â which included the lyric: âI feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.â
While Ye claimed that Taylor had approved his controversial lyric, Taylorâs camp alleged that heâd never gotten her permission to refer to her as âthat bitch.â
Kim fueled the drama by publicly accusing Taylor of lying, claiming that the singer âtotally knewâ about Yeâs lyric. âShe wanted to all of a sudden act like she didnât. I swear, my husband gets so much shit for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved,â she told GQ .
Then, of course, Kim infamously released footage of Taylor and Yeâs phone call, which appeared to show Taylor approving the line. âYeah. I mean, go with whatever line you think is better. Itâs obviously very tongue-in-cheek either way. And I really appreciate you telling me about it, thatâs really nice!â she could be heard saying.
Hours before releasing the Snapchat video of the phone call, Kim tweeted , âWait it's legit National Snake Day?!?!? They have holidays for everybody, I mean everything these days!â alongside a ton of snake emojis.
Taylor still maintained that she was not made aware of Yeâs âthat bitchâ line. However, the internet abruptly turned on her; her social media pages were flooded with snake emojis, while #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty trended on X, formerly known as Twitter.
As a result of the immense backlash, Taylor virtually disappeared from the public eye for a year, before reclaiming the whole âsnakeâ brand with her 2017 album Reputation .
In 2020, Taylor and Yeâs full phone call was shared online, revealing that Taylor had never actually approved of the âthat bitchâ lyric after all.
Over the years since the drama unfolded, Taylor has seemingly referenced her feud with Kim and Ye in numerous songs â most recently on her 2022 track "Vigilante Shit," which featured on her album Midnights .
Taylor has also addressed the feud directly, telling Time magazine last year that Kim and Yeâs âfully manufactured frame jobâ resulted in her career being temporarily âtaken awayâ from her.
âMake no mistake â my career was taken away from me,â she said. âYou have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar,â she said.
âThat took me down psychologically to a place Iâve never been before. I moved to a foreign country. I didnât leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didnât trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard,â she continued before adding: âI thought that moment of backlash was going to define me negatively for the rest of my life.â
Now, Taylor has seemingly referenced the drama with Kim once again in her new release, The Tortured Poets Department .
It should be mentioned that lyrical interpretation is, of course, entirely subjective â although Taylor does famously leave hints to encourage her fans to work out who inspires her tracks. That being said, several fans have now theorized that Taylorâs new song âthanK you aIMeeâ is about the Skims mogul â not least because the capitalized letters obviously spell out KIM.
In âthanK you aIMee,â Taylor appears to paint Kim as a high-school bully, seemingly nodding towards how she has felt bullied by both Kim and Ye throughout her career.
âWhen I picture my hometown / There's a bronze spray-tanned statue of you / And a plaque underneath it / That threatens to push me down the stairs, at our school,â it begins. Many fans have speculated that the reference to a âbronze spray-tanned statueâ is a shady jab at Kim and her infamous love of self-tanning.
âAnd it was always the same searing pain / But I dreamed that one day, I could say / All that time you were throwin' punches, I was buildin' somethin' / And I can't forgive the way you made me feel,â she sings in an apparent reference to Kimâs attempt to ruin her career with âSnakegate.â
Wait it's legit National Snake Day?!?!?They have holidays for everybody, I mean everything these days! đđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđ â Kim Kardashian (@KimKardashian) July 17, 2016
âScreamed âFuck you, Aimeeâ to the night sky, as the blood was gushin' / But I can't forget the way you made me heal,â Taylor sings. Notably, Taylorâs management team tweeted this lyric alongside a GIF from her Reputation Era, fueling speculation that it is aimed at Kim.
Taylor continues, âI wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool / I built a legacy which you can't undo / But when I count the scars, there's a moment of truth / That there wouldn't be this, if there hadn't been you.â Here, Taylor appears to acknowledge that as distressing as it was, there would be no Reputation without the infamous phone call leak and all the vitriol that followed.
She goes on, âAnd so I changed your name, and any real defining clues / And one day, your kid comes home singin' / A song that only us two is gonna know is about you.â This line appears to reference Kimâs eldest daughter, North West, having posted a TikTok video of her and Kim dancing to Taylorâs hit song âShake It Offâ last year â something that sparked widespread attention at the time.
Taylor later switches her tone, instead thanking "Aimee" instead of cursing her. She sings, "All that time you were throwin' punches, it was all for nothin' / And our town, it looks so small, from way up here / Screamed "Thank you, Aimee" to the night sky, and the stars are stunnin' / 'Cause I can't forget the way you made me heal."
Needless to say, fans were well and truly gagged by the unexpected apparent digs at Kim on Taylorâs new album.

Revisiting When Kim Kardashian’s Daughter Sang a Taylor Swift Song Ahead of ‘thanK you aIMee’ Diss
Kim Kardashian and her children once lip-synched to Taylor Swift ’s hits before her “thanK you aiMEE” musical clapback.
In January 2023, Kardashian, 43, and eldest daughter North , 10, uploaded a video to their joint “Kim and North” TikTok page, dancing around the house. The clip, which has since been deleted, was set to Swift’s “Shake It Off.” (The pop star’s 2014 track was penned about not letting haters get you down.)
Swift presumably addressed this moment on “thanK you aiMee,” a The Tortured Poets Department song released on Friday, April 19.
“And maybe you’ve reframed it / And in your mind, you never beat my spirit black and blue,” she sings in the bridge . “I don’t think you’ve changed much / And so I changed your name, and any real defining clues.”

Swift continues, “And one day, your kid comes home singin’ / A song that only us two is gonna know is about you.”
The song goes on to call out a high school bully, whom Swift seemingly likens to Kardashian as capital letters in the track title spell out Kim.
Swift has had a longtime feud with Kardashian, who shares North and three other children with ex-husband Kanye West . Back in 2009, West, now 46, stormed the MTV VMAs stage in the middle of Swift’s acceptance speech to declare that Beyoncé should have won the category. He later name-dropped Swift in his song “Famous” about the moment , rapping, “Me and Taylor still might have sex / I made that b—h famous.”
West later claimed that he got permission from Swift to include the lyric, which she vehemently denied. Kardashian, then-married to West, entered the chat and released a phone conversation of Swift and West discussing the “Famous” lyric. It has since been revealed that the call was edited.

“You know, the one that was illegally recorded, that somebody edited and manipulated in order to frame me and put me, my family, and fans through hell for 4 years,” Swift wrote via Instagram Story in 2020.
Kardashian doubled down on her side, claiming that Swift was “lying” about the events. Nearly one year later, Kardashian changed her tune and praised Swift as a musician.

“I really like a lot of her songs,” the Skims mogul said during an appearance on the “Honestly With Bari Weiss” podcast in December 2021. “They’re all super cute and catchy. I’d have to look in my phone to get a name.”
Three years later, another member of the family proved their Swiftie status. Kim’s niece Penelope, the 11-year-old daughter of Kourtney Kardashian and ex Scott Disick , was spotted wearing merch for Swift’s Eras Tour in a February social media video. It is not clear if she attended one of the pop star’s concerts.
The Tortured Poets Department available is now.

Is Taylor Swift's âthanK you aIMeeâ About Kim Kardashian? We Found 3 Clues That Suggest So
By Sara Delgado
Is Taylor Swift shading Kim Kardashian in her new song âthanK you aIMeeâ? Fans certainly think so, and there are multiple clues that support the claim.
ICYMI: Taylor Swift dropped her long-anticipated 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , on April 19, 2024 â but not without some surprises. Just two hours after the album's release, Swift took to Instagram to announce the project was actually a secret double album, unveiling 15 extra songs in the digital exclusive extended version called The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology .
TTPD: The Anthology includes four previously announced bonus tracks and 11 brand new tracks, among them âthanK you aIMee,â which fans are theorizing is dedicated to Kim Kardashian.
Just to jog your memory, Swift and Kardashian's feud technically dates all the way back to 2009 when Ye (then still Kanye West) called Swift out on stage at the MTV VMAs, saying BeyoncĂ©'s "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" should have won Best Female Video instead of âYou Belong with Me.â
In 2016, West referenced the incident in his song âFamous,â rapping: âI feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that b*tch famous.â Swift, well, swiftly called him out for it, and Kardashian then leaked a conversation between the two where Swift seemingly granted West permission for the name drop. Since then, Swift has repeatedly claimed the call was edited to fit West's narrative. (The full call was leaked in 2020 , and Swift referenced it as proof that she âwas telling the truth the whole time.â )
Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian photographed together during an amicable spell in 2015 at the Grammys.
Okay, now that we have the backstory, let's get into the clues that suggest âthanK you aIMee" is actually about Kim Kardashian.
Clue No. 1: The song title spells out âKIMâ
The first clue that suggests âthanK you aIMee,â penned by Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner, could be a Kim Kardashian diss track is the stylization of the song's title, which features a capital K, I, and M, spelling out Kardashian's first name. This stylization is constant in the track's official lyrics, and, as fans know, it's not the first time Swift has used this coding device to spell out secret messages.
Clue No. 2: Swift sings about a bully, and she's publicly referred to Kardashian as a âbullyâ in the past
In the song, Swift seems to be referring to a high school bully. âWhen I picture my hometown / Thereâs a bronze, spray-tanned statue of you / And a plaque underneath it / That threatens to push me down the stairs at our school / And it was always the same searing pain / But I dreamed that one day I could say,â she sings in the first verse.
Swift famously referred to Kardashian as a âbullyâ in an essay published by Elle to commemorate her 30th birthday. âIn my experience, Iâve come to see that bullies want to be feared and taken seriously. A few years ago, someone started an online hate campaign by calling me a snake on the internet," Swift wrote, referring to Kardashian, who posted snake emojis to refer to Swift mid-feud.
âThe fact that so many people jumped on board with it led me to feeling lower than Iâve ever felt in my life, but I canât tell you how hard I had to keep from laughing every time my 63-foot inflatable cobra named Karyn appeared onstage in front of 60,000 screaming fans," Swift continued. "Itâs the Stadium Tour equivalent of responding to a trollâs hateful Instagram comment with âlol.â It would be nice if we could get an apology from people who bully us, but maybe all Iâll ever get is the satisfaction of knowing I could survive it, and thrive in spite of it.â
Clue No. 3: Swift seems to reference North West
Towards the end of the song, Swift sings: âMaybe youâve reframed it / And in your mind you never beat my spirit black and blue / I donât think youâve changed much / And so I changed your name and any real defining clues, and one day your kid comes home singing / A song that only us two is gonna know is about you.â
Swift could be referencing two Kardashian in instances here. First of all, Kardashian âreframingâ her opinion of Swift. In late 2021, Kardashian called Swift's music âcute and catchyâ during an episode of the Honestly With Bari Weis podcast . âI really like a lot of her songs,â she said at the time, which made fans scratch their heads. The second instance seems to refer to Kardashian's daughter, North West, who made her dance to âShake It Offâ together in a since-deleted video from their joint TikTok account.
Elsewhere in âthanK you aIMee" Swift sings: âI wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool / I built a legacy that you canât undo / But when I count the scars / Thereâs a moment of truth / That there wouldnât be this / If there hadnât been you,â which seems to be her own version of âwhat doesn't kill you makes you strongerâ with a seeming dash of admission that the whole feud â and what she created inspired by it â did make her more famous.
