500 Words Essay On Independence Day

August 15, 1947 , was the date when India gained its independence. After a battle, we managed to free ourselves from the British Raj. The first time the national flag was flown at the Red Fort was on this day at midnight by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, our first prime minister. It signalled the end of the 200-year British occupation of India. We currently live in a country that is free and autonomous.

India has been under British rule for almost 200 years. Every Indian's existence during British colonialism was miserable and filled with hardship. Indians had little freedom of speech and were treated like slaves. Indian leaders were merely British commanders' puppets. Farmers were starving because they couldn't grow crops and had to pay high land fees, while Indian fighters were oppressed in British camps.

The Indian people honour the selfless efforts and unmatched achievements of great men and women who helped India attain its independence on this special day. Everyone in the nation pays respectful homage to leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose , Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Sardar Patel, and Gopalbandhu Das .

Some well-known figures are Bhagat Singh, the Rani of Jhansi, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ram Prasad Bismil, and Ashfaqulla Khan.

Women's Contribution

This day is honoured in the nation's capital, Delhi, with a lot of fanfare. On the parade area in front of the Red Fort, all leaders and commoners assemble in vast numbers to await the arrival of the Prime Minister.

Background of Indian Independence Day

After the Second World War, Lord Clement Atlee made a historic declaration that India would be allowed to design its own constitution. Subsequently, a cabinet mission of which, Patrick Lawrence, Sir Stafford Cripps and AV Alexander who acted as the members, were sent to India. This popularly came to be known as the cabinet mission of 1946. The cabinet mission suggested certain changes with respect to the constitution of India

Provisions of Cabinet Mission were accepted by both the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League. As per the provisions, elections were held for the formation of the constituent assembly. Congress won 205 out of 214 seats, Muslim league won 73 out of 78 states. An interim government was set up under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru (Born on November 14, 1889 ). Though initially apprehensive about being a party to the plan, Muslim league was convinced to join the government by Wavell.

According to the Mountbatten plan, August 15th 1947 was planned as the day for handing over the powers to India and Pakistan. With effect from the same day, the country would be divided into two independent dominions, India and Pakistan. Princely states would get the liberty to join either of the unions or remain independent. On the 15th of August 1947 at the stroke of midnight, India got freedom from the despotic rule of the British.

On 29 th of July 1946, the Muslim League decided to withdraw from the Cabinet Mission Plan. It passed the ‘Direct Action’ resolution. Meanwhile, Dr Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president of the constituent assembly. On the 3 rd of June, Mountbatten put forward his plan which gave out recommendations to resolve the political problems in India. A formal approval was given to the Mountbatten plan by enactment of India Independence Act.

Partition of India

Millions of Muslim, Sikh and Hindu refugees trekked the newly drawn borders in the months surrounding independence. It was one of the darkest moments of the Partition of India . In Punjab, where the borders divided the Sikh regions in halves, massive bloodshed followed; in Bengal and Bihar, where Mahatma Gandhi’s presence assuaged communal tempers, the violence was mitigated. In all, between 250,000 and 1,000,000 people on both sides of the new borders died in the violence. While the entire nation was celebrating the Independence Day, Gandhi stayed in Calcutta in an attempt to stem the carnage. On 14 August 1947, the Independence Day of Pakistan, the new Dominion of Pakistan came into being; Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as its first Governor General in Karachi.

The Constituent Assembly of India met for its fifth session at 11 pm on 14 August in the Constitution Hall in New Delhi. The session was chaired by the president Rajendra Prasad (Death on February 28, 1963 ). In this session, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the Tryst with Destiny speech proclaiming India’s independence.

The members of the Assembly formally took the pledge of being in the service of the country. A group of women, representing the women of India, formally presented the national flag to the assembly.

Provisions of India Independence Act

The India Independence Act, 1947 had the following provisions

  • The country would be divided into India and Pakistan
  • British government would give away all their powers to the two newly formed nations
  • Radcliff line was decided upon, demarcating India from Pakistan.

Post-Independence, Mohammad Ali Jinnah became the first Governor-General of Pakistan and Lord Mount Batten become the first Governor-General of Independent India.

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on Independence Day

5 lines on independence day, 10 lines on independence day, short paragraph on independence day, long essay on independence day, independence day activities for kids to make their day special, interesting facts about india’s independence day, what will your child learn from the ‘independence day’ essay.

Independence Day is a historic moment for any nation. It is the day the country celebrates its freedom from foreign rule and honours the freedom fighters who struggled for independence. Students of classes 1, 2 and 3 are asked to write an essay on Independence day as part of a school assignment or for a competition. It is an important topic that makes children proud of their country’s history and national leaders.

Children of lower primary classes may find this topic somewhat challenging, as it involves learning and memorising some facts and penning them down in their own words. Here we guide them on how to write on this topic with a few sample essays for classes 1, 2 and 3.

Writing is a skill that takes time and practice to develop. Starting with a simple topic and building your way up is the best way to become proficient. Here are some tips for essay writing on independence day:

  • Before you start writing, consider the word count and essay format. You can begin by writing essays in the form of separate facts in simple lines. Writing a paragraph can be more complicated and requires structuring the narrative.
  • Gather all the facts about independence day and plan the order you want to write them.
  • You can start with the history of independence day and talk about how you celebrate it in school or home.
  • Avoid emphasising any point when the word count is small. Keep the essay general.

Younger children of class 1 are expected to write an essay with simple facts broken up into several lines. Here is how to write an independence day essay for class 1 in 5 lines:

  • Independence day is celebrated on August 15 every year.
  • Independence day is a national holiday for everyone.
  • It celebrates our country’s freedom after a long struggle and sacrifice.
  • It reminds us of the struggle and bravery of our freedom fighters.
  • We celebrate Independence Day by hoisting the flag and singing the national anthem.

An assignment with a slightly higher challenge for class 1 kids would be an essay on independence day in 100 words. Here is how to write it in 10 lines:

  • India celebrates Independence Day on August 15 every year.
  • India got freedom from British rule on August 15, 1947.
  • On this day, we honour the sacrifice of our freedom fighters.
  • The whole nation celebrates independence by hoisting the national flag.
  • Independence Day is an important national holiday for our country.
  • We have a holiday, but we go to school to attend the flag hoisting ceremony.
  • We sing the national anthem and raise a salute to the tricolour.
  • After celebrating Independence Day at school, we go home and watch the national parade that takes place in the Capital city, on television.
  • Independence Day is also a celebration of our country’s diverse cultures.
  • People show their love for the country by singing patriotic songs, displaying the flag.
  • Schools and housing societies hold cultural events for Independence Day.

As children grow, they are ready for a more challenging assignment. They are expected to write a short essay in the form of a small paragraph. Here is how to write this essay on Independence Day in 150 words:

India celebrates Independence Day on August 15. It is the day we remember the sacrifices made by the brave freedom fighters who struggled for our independence. India got freedom from British rule on this day in 1947. In honour of this day, there is a grand cultural event in the capital city, New Delhi.

The celebrations start with the flag hoisting ceremony and honouring the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the freedom struggle.

Our colony organises a programme on this day where we dress up in the colours of our flags and perform songs and dances on the stage.

Long essays that are over 300-words-long need some advanced writing skills. Children need to weave facts into a good narrative to make the essay appealing. Here is an example of an essay on Independence Day for class 3:

India got independence on August 15, 1947, after 200 years of British rule. The first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the Indian flag at the Red Fort for the first time to celebrate the country’s freedom. Under British colonial rule, India had struggled for decades. The freedom fighters fought against the British rulers, sacrificing their lives for a noble cause.

Independence day is celebrated every year to commemorate the events of the freedom struggle. On this day, we celebrate the rich diversity of our country, and the unity we have among all Indians. The unity of the freedom fighters from all over the country inspires us to live in harmony.

On Independence Day, there are celebrations across the country. People and communities come together to host the national flag and pledge allegiance to it. The country’s largest celebration takes place in the capital, New Delhi. Schools, too, have a special celebration where students sing patriotic songs and attend the flag hoisting ceremony.

  • Apart from India, five other countries also celebrate their independence on August 15. South Korea, North Korea, the Republic of Congo, Bahrain, and Liechtenstein, although the years of independence are different.
  • There is only one place in India where the Indian Flag is made, which is The Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS), situated in Dharwad, Karnataka.

  • The song Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata, composed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1911, was renamed Jan Gan Man and declared as India’s National Anthem by the Constituent Assembly of India on January 24, 1950.

To write an essay on Independence Day, your child will have to first learn about the various aspects of the celebration. They will learn about the purpose of the day’s celebration and the history behind it. They will also become aware of the importance of being a free country, which will motivate them to be proud and responsible citizens. This essay will also help your child articulate their thoughts and express them articulately, thus building their writing skill.

77th Independence Day Essay (500+ words)

The week leading up to 15th of August landmark day of our Independence Day. On this day you can find tricolour at every nook and corner. All private and government organization’s, schools and institutions are celebrating the Day of Freedom. But few are the people who actually understand the true importance of it.

Why Independence Day is so Importance?

Independence Day is the most significant day in the history of India because it reminds us of the bravery and struggle of our freedom fighters. On this day we pay homage to our fighters who fought and gave up their lives for our independence. Since then we are celebrating our Independence Day every year on 15 th August. It is considered a national holiday and all the organisations and institutions hoist the national flag and organise cultural functions across the country.

This day is celebrated to ignite the feeling of nationalism and patriotism across the country. Every citizen has a different viewpoint on Independence. A youngster takes this day to celebrate the glory and strength of the country while for others it’s a reminder of the long suppression and cruelty that our people suffered. It’s not only a celebration of Independence but also of unity with the diverse culture of the country.

How we got our Independence?

For about two centuries the Britishers managed to rule over us. Also, the resident of the nation endured a lot because of these oppressors. British authorities deal with us like slaves until we figure out how to retaliate against them.

We battled for our freedom yet work vigorously and magnanimously under the direction of our pioneers Jawahar Lal Nehru , Subhash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Chandra Shekhar Azad, and Bhagat Singh. A portion of these pioneers picks the way of violence while some picked non-violence. The definitive point of these was to drive out the Britishers from the nation. Furthermore, on the fifteenth of August 1947, the hotly anticipated dream works out as expected.

Activities and Cultural Programs on Independence Day

To celebrate this day a ceremony is held at Red Fort in Delhi in which the Prime Minister and President of the nation address the entire country and hoist the tricolour flag.  After flag hosting, 21 gunshots are fired in honour of the occasion. This is the begging of the main event after that lot of acts and cultural activities are performed to show the diversity in unity and strength of our country. A parade of all the Indian forces takes place.

What is different on 77th Independence Day 2023

This Year the celebration of Independence Day would be different as we know the entire world is facing a pandemic crisis. Like Last year we could expect from the Centre that they will issue some guidelines to avoid large gatherings while celebrating Independence Day.

Prime Minister Narender Modi has asked the people of India to take the pledge on this Independence Day to fight pandemics and to make India free of them. And to make sure that every citizen works for self-dependent (Atmnirbhar Bharat) India.

A day worth celebrating for which our ancestors have shed their blood and have struggled a lot. But are we truly justifying the struggle and hard work of our freedom fighters? We should rethink it and should work towards the actual freedom of the people of the country by helping them and making them self-dependent and capable enough to support not even themselves but also the country. This Independence Day we should dream of India which is strong and powerful and have the capability to face any problems with unity.

Hope you liked this Independence Day essay 500 words in the English language.

77th Independence Day Short Essay

“One individual may die for an idea, but that idea will, after his death, incarnate itself in a thousand lives”  – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

Today we are celebrating our 77th Independence Day. For our country India, several brave hearts have fought for our liberation and gave immeasurable sacrifices. For almost 200 years, the government of the British governed India. Before 1947, the British government oppressed our countrymen a lot. After being tortured, hanged, and captured by the cruel Britishers finally, we got our freedom on 15th of August 1947.

As Vivekananda said that “ This life is a tremendous assertion of freedom “ . Every year we celebrate Independence Day to give tributes to all the freedom fighters who have given their lives for our freedom. For the very 1st time PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the flag of India and give a speech to all Indians at Red Fort on 15th August. From that day, all schools, colleges, organizations, and every citizen of India celebrates this day.

Initially, India was described as  “Sone ki Chidiya”  due to the excess of resources and minerals found in India. But the British government took away everything by implementing the “Divide and Rule” policy. Freedom Fighters thought that it would have to end, otherwise, our generation will live in slavery in the future too. Freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, etc made sacrifices of their life to provide freedom to us so, now it’s our duty to be responsible citizens.

“Be the change that you want to see in the world” –  Mahatma Gandhi

In India, patriotism is a feeling that comes from the inside. It is necessary for our new generation to know the importance of patriotism, scarifies given by our leaders, freedom fighters and soldiers.

This year celebrate Independence Day at your home and don’t step out of the house without having a valid reason. Don’t forget the hard work and scarifies of our health workers, doctors, and every person who has been working so dedicated to keeping us safe.

“The sword of revolution is sharpened on the whetting stone of ideas”  – Bhagat Singh
