Completing a bachelor’s degree is an accomplishment, whether it is done in person or online. And preparing to apply for graduate school is another significant accomplishment. When a student chooses to further their education, they may wonder if it makes a difference if their online degree is accepted or not. They may wonder if completing an online degree will be considered differently than another student who may have completed a degree in person.

In actuality, graduate schools do accept online degrees. And in fact, with so much of the world transitioning to online learning for most of the 2020-21 school year, completing an online degree may actually be considered an advantage. For the most part, what matters from the perspective of graduate school admissions teams is whether or not the program the student completed was accredited.

Search Online Programs

There is more to what the admissions team will consider than simply whether the degree was completed online or not—a practice now referred to as holistic admissions . The Graduate School at the University of Washington calls holistic admissions “practices that promote an inclusive and rigorous graduate application review process that evaluates applicants through a variety of methods, rather than prioritizing GPA, standardized test scores such as GRE scores, or former school of attendance.”

Any degree program, whether offering online or traditional in-class instruction, must achieve a high standard of delivering an education program in order to be accredited. Many graduate schools also understand that many students who are furthering their education may not be traditional students. They may be switching careers, they may have been out of school for a while, or they may have significant work or volunteer experience that enhances their in-school learning. All of those things are considered in addition to whether or not the degree program was offered online or in person.

Dr. Eichhorn received her bachelor’s degree in communication studies and Spanish from Canisius College, a master’s in communication research from West Virginia University, and a doctorate in communication research from the University of Miami. The Division of Graduate Studies offers degree and certificate programs in all four of SUNY Oswego’s colleges and schools: the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, and the School of Communication, Media and the Arts.

Are Online Degrees Respected?

In a nutshell, yes! Of course, online degrees are respected. But there is much more that goes into the decision to admit a student besides whether their degree was completed online or not. Dr. Eichhorn says the intention of the graduate admissions officer is to validate a student’s baccalaureate degree for graduate admissions: “To some extent, I think there are a lot of interesting questions that can be asked regarding the pandemic and how individual institutions are dealing with the influx of online courses,” Dr. Eichhorn says. “But I don’t know if things have changed drastically in terms of how we’re evaluating online degree programs.”

Accreditation comes in two forms: institutional accreditation and programmatic accreditation. SUNY is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Individual programs, such as the business, counseling, or education programs, have their own accrediting bodies.

“Often, both of these types have standards around expectations for online and distance education delivery,” explains Dr. Eichhorn. “Therefore, understanding the benefits of each type of accreditation can help us evaluate a college transcript. If the university is accredited and the program is accredited, that will give us an additional layer of confidence. When we get a transcript from a school that we’re not familiar with we go through the Council of Higher Education and browse for that school’s level of accreditations.”

Rosemary Garagnani, Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management and the Acting Director of Recruitment and Admissions for Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, says OSU has no bias towards or against online degrees and concurs that a large part of what the graduate school is looking for is the accreditation of the school: “As long as the school is regionally accredited, we are going to accept that degree,” Garagnani says. “At the graduate level, what is being looked at is the coursework and whether the preparation appears to be there for the program the person’s applying to.”

Garagnani says she sees little if any change in how pre- or post-pandemic online degrees are viewed. “Certainly there’s been more leeway in general for students taking hybrid classes and so forth, but I don’t think that there was bias to begin with.” Garagnani says it’s been quite some time since there was any bias if there ever was any.

In 1989, the University of Phoenix became the first institution to launch a fully online school experience offering both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In 1996, Jones International University became the first accredited web-based university. At the advent of online degrees, there may have been a perception that online degrees weren’t as rigorous as a traditional in-person degree, but that perception has disappeared. “I haven’t heard anything like that for quite some time,” notes Garagnani.

Garagnani adds that some online degree programs may be more robust than others, but she says there doesn’t seem to be any bias as there might have been 20 years ago. “A lot of adult learners are nontraditional learners and online degrees provide access,” Garagnani says. “There’s a lot more acceptance of online programs now.”

Holistic Graduate Admissions

Many graduate schools, including SUNY Oswego, are implementing holistic graduate admissions practices. It’s been clear to education experts for some time that focusing on external factors such as GPA and standardized test scores may not accurately predict success in graduate school.

Holistic review, also known as whole-file or comprehensive review, looks at a variety of factors, including personal attributes, when reviewing applications. The holistic review holds promise for achieving a diverse population of students with many different experiences and backgrounds who will also be successful in their chosen program.

At the time of its 2016 report entitled “Holistic Review in Graduate Admissions,” the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) noted that there was no codified core set of practices that define holistic review. To create their report, the CGS studied existing literature and initiatives on holistic review and surveyed CGS’s 540 graduate institutions in the U.S. and Canada:

• 69 percent of the respondents felt that “measuring characteristics of applicants other than past academic performance and test scores” was a key feature of holistic review
• 62 percent chose “considering all the ways an applicant might contribute to a diverse educational environment.”
• 53 percent chose “equally weighing applicants’ experiences, attributes, and academic metrics”

Significant numbers of the respondents also chose “considering additional criteria” after an initial screening based on academic metrics, and 33 percent chose to consider “the demographic characteristics (race, gender, etc.) of an applicant.”

In other words, there is not one single indicator that should be used to exclude students. The undergraduate degree, the GRE score, GPA, and personal statements and essays should all be considered. In many schools across the country, the graduate school student population is very mixed. For a student who has been out of school for 20 years and started a career, the undergraduate GPA is not as predictive as some of the more recent things that they’ve accomplished. That makes things like letters of recommendation or personal essays so important for non-traditional students. “If we’re trying to serve a person who has been out of school for 20 years, the pieces of information that we’re looking for will look different than from someone who is just entering post-high school,” notes Dr. Eichhorn.

Garagnani says deeper factors like coursework are examined by the individual programs. “For instance, our computer science program has a long list of prerequisite coursework,” Garagnani says. “So they’re looking for specific coursework taken in advance.” OSU has about 90 graduate majors, and some have very specific prerequisite requirements while others do not.

Dr. Eichhorn says SUNY Oswego’s admissions officers place a little more emphasis on the students’ personal statements and letters of recommendation along with course descriptions “to make sure that they were actually learning what they needed to in the class.” Most graduate schools admit students programmatically, so the graduate admissions officers in each program would be responsible for evaluating the course content and relevant extracurricular experience.

“Each applicant goes through a deep departmental review process that is very different for each program,” explains Dr. Eichhorn. “We’re often looking at an overall GPA, but when we get the transcript we’re looking at specific courses. How did they do on undergraduate research methods? How did the school deliver this or that course? If they don’t have a solid statistics course, we may ask the student to take the GRE and we’ll be looking at those analytical scores. If there’s evidence of financial hardship with taking the GRE, we’ll ask them to submit papers that perhaps they’ve written in a particular course that can provide evidence towards their writing competence or towards their analytical skills.”

Each graduate admissions officer has a deep understanding of their own departmental criteria. Dr. Eichhorn says key to that is having deep conversations with departments about what the best pieces of evidence are that we can gather. “And even with one great piece, how can we supplement that with other pieces?” Dr. Eichhorn says they often approach students for in-depth individual conversations in which they talk with the student about what they have been doing and what pieces of evidence would more fully illustrate that, and then the graduate office helps them gather that, which is added to their application and sent to the department for review.

One option SUNY Oswego occasionally considered is conditional acceptance. If the student performs well in some of the hardest courses in the first semester, the school can offer full acceptance. If a course requires a prerequisite, the student may be able to take the prereq course prior to full admission. “We can still make really good, quality decisions in a short amount of time for our audience,” says Dr. Eichhorn, “but these strategies allow us to be able to customize what those pieces of evidence are that we look for to demonstrate competence.”

New Concerns Related to Online Degrees

One concern that Dr. Eichhorn sees is programs that abruptly had to transition to an online format during the pandemic. It is difficult to take an established in-person degree and suddenly deliver it fully online. Graduate admissions officers have no way of knowing how successfully the programs were able to do that.

One way to gauge proficiency is if an online program is registered with a regional accrediting body. A pending accreditation is a sure sign that a program was confident enough in its pivot to online delivery that it is seeking accreditation.

“Knowing that there is a process with checks and balances that requires providing evidence and competency to third parties that a program has the resources to successfully deliver an online program provides a sense of confidence,” says Dr. Eichhorn. “And even then, it’s not a one-and-done sort of thing. Accreditation requires an ongoing assessment of the quality of the educational experience that is reassuring.”

Has There Been An Increase in Online Degrees?

Dr. Eichhorn acknowledges that online degrees were trending even before the pandemic. But it’s too soon to see a notable uptick in applicants with online degrees. “There’s a pocket of an audience who clearly sees online education as more accessible,” Dr. Eichhorn says. Another change is international students are increasingly returning to state-side campuses following the relaxing of restrictions set in motion during the Trump presidential administration. “We’ll have to see how that plays out, and we’re also needing to be aware of Covid variants around the world,” says Eichhorn.

Garagnani too says there has been a slight increase, but not a huge one. “We may see more after a year or two goes by and the people who are undergraduate students now complete their degrees online,” Garagnani says.

If that increase does occur, Garagnani says it is something that graduate admissions officers would notice, but what would make more of an impact is if they started to see that students who completed online degrees were not successfully completing their graduate programs. “All data in higher ed is delayed,” explains Garagnani. “If anything would change our perception of online degrees it would be if, in two years we start accepting a lot of people with online bachelor’s degrees and then see in two to four years that they didn’t do well. But right now I don’t feel like there’s any evidence of that or any bias in that way.”

Understanding Student Success Factors

The pandemic has increased conversations about how students were affected over the 2020-21 school year and what accommodations were successful. “Our ultimate goal here is always to truly understand student success factors,” says Dr. Eichhorn. “In my personal opinion, I feel like in some ways we’ve created a space to engage the academic community and around thinking through what traditional practices were and how we might engage a larger audience by looking at things with a more flexible mindset about meeting students where they’re at in a greater way.”

Higher ed is evolving, stated Garagnani, and there certainly has been some impact from Covid with students and instructors trying new modalities. “I think that online access will grow,” she says. “We’ve certainly seen more applicants to our online programs.”

It’s clear the current environment is stretching the boundaries a little bit. This means the pieces of evidence admissions officers look for can look a little different, and students who have non-traditional experiences have a greater chance of being both accepted and successful into their program of choice.

Are online degrees respected? (And how should you choose one?)

When students returned to school in the fall of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, 97% more students were in online classes than just one year earlier. That's according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). 

The dramatic shift to online learning was possible because students, schools, and employers respect online degrees.

Even before the pandemic, online learning was on the rise because of its flexibility, accessibility, and convenience. 

Let's dive into why employers value online training and what students should look for. 

For extra insight, we spoke to Jeffrey Williams, senior director of career and student services at New Horizons Computer Learning Centers. Williams coaches students in using their education to reach their career goals. Responses were edited for length and clarity.

What do employers think of online degrees?

The best online bachelor's degrees check all the right boxes when it comes to curricula, cost, and convenience. We've broken down our top picks here.

Employers perceptions of online degrees are steadily improving as online learning has increased in popularity and effectiveness. A 2019 survey from Northeastern University found that more than 75% of employers valued online learning the same or more than five years prior. 

Online learning works better for some majors than others, which could impact perceptions in some fields.

Most of the surveyed employers believed that work-integrated learning — connecting what you learn in class to its use in the workplace — was essential to quality online education. Thus, degrees that can effectively simulate real-world projects online were more respected.  

While online colleges have found ways to offer all types of training, it's more difficult to find online programs in majors with heavy practical requirements, such as medical science, than in the arts and humanities. 

ZDNet: In general, do employers these days care about whether a degree was earned online or on campus?

Jeffrey Williams: Most employers are more accepting of the concept of online degrees, as long as the degree is from an accredited university or college. 

Many well-known colleges now offer courses and degrees online. There are thousands of graduates and tenured people in the workforce who graduated from online degree programs across the country who've been successful in landing meaningful work. 

Finally, it is not required to note [on your resume] if your degree was earned online or on campus. Many colleges use the hybrid model when offering courses. 

Choosing an online degree with credibility: What to look for

When choosing an online degree, you should ensure your program of choice has strong quality indicators. The table below outlines what to look for.

ZDNet: What aspects of an online degree might employers be impressed by? What might make them wary?

Jeffrey Williams: Due to the past and tradition of how college and learning has been, the perception is that brick-and-mortar colleges are more productive. 

However, there are advantages to attending an online school. The Department of Education found that "students in online conditions performed modestly better, on average, than those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face instruction." 

A major hesitation is that some employers may be wary because they feel less time and hands-on attention will be given to the course of study. This can cause employers to think you are not prepared or as educated. 

Should I earn my degree online or on campus?

Choosing between online and on-campus degrees is often a matter of preference. 

While both degree types can lead you to the same credentials, professions, and opportunities, each type offers benefits over the other. Here are some factors to consider.

Online degrees:

• Access schools and programs from all across the country
• More flexible and accommodating schedules
• Easier to maintain employment while studying
• Fewer travel requirements

On-campus degrees:

• More program options and fewer study restrictions
• Greater levels of involvement and interaction

Jeffrey Williams: This is strongly dependent on the field or industry and the position you are applying for. 

Education, information technology, cybersecurity , forensic science, and most liberal arts and science degrees are usually not an issue. Online degrees earned for advancement in the military, law enforcement, firefighting or emergency services are rarely an issue. 

However, fields such as medicine, engineering , law, architecture, and a few notable STEM fields can prove difficult to convince or sell to an employer if they were earned online. 

For degree programs that need to be approved by a state licensing board, having an online degree can cause an issue.

Making the most of your online degree

Online learning provides incredible opportunities for learners nationwide, but there are some shortcomings you should know about.

For example, online learners may not get the same level or type of engagement with peers or instructors. They might also miss out on campus facilities and services, such as networking opportunities and extracurriculars. 

Online colleges can also offer a cheaper, more flexible alternative to a traditional degree that may help you advance your goals. You can supplement your experience by networking with your peers, finding internship opportunities, taking extra classes, and more.

ZDNet: What can online students do so that they're just as competitive and equipped in the job market as those who went to in-person schools?

Jeffrey Williams: Students can be equipped in the job market with their online degrees by making sure the material learned in their fields of study is successfully demonstrated and applied during the interview process and beyond. 

It's important to detail any real-world experience such as a capstone, which is usually hands-on and demonstrates applied learning. 

Another is to mention and demonstrate the tangible skills you obtained throughout the degree program (e.g., fluency in computer programming languages, project management skills, etc.).

A master’s eases the transition to graduate work and may make you more competitive when applying to doctoral programs.

Although it's not usually a requirement, earning a master’s degree before applying to a Ph.D. or other doctoral program can be a good way to get accustomed to graduate-level coursework while gaining valuable research experience and connections in your field.

But it can also be an expensive and time-consuming detour on the route to a doctorate, so it’s important to consider whether the benefits of earning a master’s before a Ph.D. outweigh the cost.

Here are some factors experts say you should weigh.

Reasons to Get a Master’s Degree First

Karin Ash, a graduate consultant at Accepted, a college admissions consulting firm, says the research experience students can gain through a master’s tends to give them an edge in doctoral admissions.

Master's studies can also expand opportunities for students who already have significant research work behind them. Ash notes that some students she works with have research experience but choose to explore other research areas through a master's before deciding on a focus for their doctoral studies.

If your undergraduate major was fairly different from what you plan to study at a graduate level, getting a master’s degree first can help bridge the gap, says Julie Posselt, a professor of education and associate dean of the University of Southern California Graduate School. Posselt, who earned her master's before pursuing doctoral studies, says master’s studies can also help you decide whether what you’re studying is right for your academic interests and career goals .

“I learned through my master's program that the field that I had started to pursue was much more narrow than what I wanted for the long term,” Posselt says. “So instead of investing five years in a field, I was able to invest a shorter amount of time – two years – and then make the decision that if someday I wanted a Ph.D., it was going to need to be in a broader field than the one that I had during my master's.”

Ash and Posselt say a master’s can be a good way to network with experts in your field of interest and make connections that will be valuable in a future career.

“A lot of STEM students tell me they don’t have professors who know them as their classes are large,” Ash wrote in an email. “Obtaining a master’s degree will allow them to develop relationships with professors who can then write substantive recommendation letters .”

Reasons to Go Straight to a Doctoral Program

Master's degrees can be expensive , and students often don't receive significant funding to complete their studies.

“My concern is the increasing debt that American students have from their undergraduate education," Posselt says, "and the fact that most master's programs don't fund them, and as a result, students have to take out significant loans" to complete a master’s.

"I always encourage students, if they're going to get a master's degree, to try to find a place where they can get funding along the way,” she says.

On the other hand, Ash says it’s common for Ph.D. programs to be fully funded , so it may be unnecessarily costly to earn a master’s degree first – especially if it means taking out student loans .

In addition to considering the tuition cost, Posselt says it’s important to consider the earnings you could lose by delaying the start of your career by a year or two to pursue a master’s degree.

It's also worth investigating whether the doctoral program you're considering will accept some of the credits you earn in a master's program, as that could shorten your doctoral studies. But Posselt says the transferability of master's-level coursework is relatively weak and varies by institution.

Even if you do apply master's coursework to your Ph.D., it may not be worthwhile.

"Many Ph.D. programs will accept credits from courses taken at the master's level if the coursework is relevant to the program," Ash says. "However, often the applicant is veering to a more specialized education and will need to take the appropriate coursework to become proficient in that subject area. This could mean they end up with many more credits than needed to graduate."

If you’re still unsure whether you should pursue a master’s first, Posselt says it’s important to consider the leverage the degree could have when it comes to doctoral admissions. A master’s is more valuable in some fields than others, she notes, so consulting with advisers and mentors from your undergraduate studies is a good way to determine how useful it will be when pursuing doctoral work.

Congratulations! You’ve decided to pursue a master’s degree . With that big decision out of the way, you're ready to start researching your options. But which graduate program is right for you?

These days, graduate courses are no longer confined to a physical campus. Many programs now allow you to complete your studies online—but is this the best choice for you? And how will an online master’s degree be viewed by employers?

Why study online?

A recent report found that 69% of online learners are using virtual courses to start or advance their careers. The majority of these are identified as career accelerators : people “interested in earning an academic credential in a field where they already work or have practical experience.” 

There are some common reasons people choose to pursue a degree online:

• If your current life circumstances make relocation unrealistic (e.g. if you’re employed, raising a family, or living with a chronic illness ) pursuing your education online is a convenient and flexible option. You can fit your coursework into your schedule and have ongoing interactions with your professors and peers—all you need is an internet connection.
• Online master’s degree programs are available in a variety of subject areas and formats (e.g. completely online or an online-on-campus hybrid). This means that you’re likely to find a degree program that suits your needs, interests, and goals.
• An online degree will not take you longer to complete. You can finish your degree within the same timeframe as a traditional program. Some online programs are even flexible enough to allow you to earn your degree faster, if you can manage a more demanding course load.
• Financial aid options—federal assistance, private grants and scholarships, and even employer-subsidized tuition—are available if you attend an accredited online institution.

Factors to consider

The flexibility of online learning provides many benefits. But there are some disadvantages to not having a physical campus:

• Online degrees often require more self-motivation and independent effort than their traditional counterparts. If you’re most motivated by group work and collaboration, an online degree could be difficult for you.
• If you’re earning your degree in an area outside of your professional expertise, you may have extra work to contend with: it will be up to you to bridge the gap between your coursework and practical experience. This could mean finding an internship, if you have the extra time to commit.
• Your degree might not have an on-campus component—or you might be too far away to take advantage of it. This will affect your ability to interact with professors and classmates in-person. It may also be more difficult to access "traditional" campus events, such as career fairs, seminars, and employer interviews.

How will your online degree be valued?

If you’re pursuing a master’s degree to advance your career, you may wonder how seriously employers will take an online degree. Do your due diligence when evaluating potential programs. If you choose an online option, make sure you enroll in an accredited program—your degree will be taken more seriously and give you a greater return on investment.

And remember: unless you specifically disclose that your degree was earned online, potential employers likely won’t know the difference just from looking at your CV. If you do choose to disclose, be clear on your reasons for going the e-learning route. In your CV or cover letter, you may write:

“I chose to pursue an online master’s degree in [SUBJECT] from [UNIVERSITY] so that I could continue my tenure at [ORGANIZATION] while practicing what I have learned about [SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREA].”

Find the best option for you

There’s only one person who can determine if online learning is best for you—and that’s you . Once you’re ready to commit to the rigors of a graduate-level education, you’ll have to evaluate your personal circumstances to see what learning format feels most manageable. 

Even though the online degree experience isn’t in-person, don’t be afraid to reach out to university admission and alumni offices. They will be happy to tell you more about programs of interest, and to connect you with current and past students. This will help you to better understand what online learning is like, and to decide if it’s a good fit for you.

Can I get into a doctoral program with an online master’s in psychology?

During the next decade, the outlook for psychologist jobs is projected to grow 8% , according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These jobs pay more than $80,000 per year, , on average, but they require at least a master’s degree to fulfill. However, with some jobs in the field—such as becoming a clinical psychologist—you’re often required to have a doctoral degree. 

Students who earned a master’s degree in psychology often pursue careers in industrial and organizational psychology, which includes jobs such as human resources management and management consulting, while other graduates go into social psychology to do research. Practicing psychology typically requires earning a Ph.D. or Psy.D., and some states also allow master’s graduates to earn licensure for clinical, counseling, or social psychology, according to the American Psychological Association .

Because of the additional opportunities further education brings, some current and future master’s students may be interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in psychology. Fortune sat down with Catherine Grus, the chief education officer of the American Psychological Association, to find out what it takes to get into a Ph.D. program—and whether earning an online master’s degree in psychology will be enough to get into a doctoral program or land your dream job. Grus earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Nova University .

The following interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

What to know about Ph.D. programs in psychology

Fortune: What does it take to get a Ph.D. in psychology?

Grus: Each program decides what requirements they are going to set for admission and what value they put on those different requirements. So there’s not really one formula that I could say applies to everyone. But in general, the practice now is to look at holistic admissions practices. Programs will consider a number of different factors: letters of recommendation, some programs still require the graduate record examination, and look for some coursework that people might have taken before.

Do Ph.D. programs typically require a master’s degree?

It really varies. Some individuals will get master’s degrees and then decide they want to go on and get a doctoral degree and other individuals jump right into it. It’s not typically the norm that programs would require a master’s degree to be admitted to a doctoral program. But obviously sometimes it’s beneficial certainly to the student because they might have some of that coursework count for credit towards their doctoral degree and it helps them graduate a little bit faster.

Do online master’s degrees in psychology carry the same weight in admissions for Ph.D. programs?

I think it probably matters less for people that have a master’s degree. The doctoral program is looking at a number of different factors when they’re admitting a student. If they’re not even requiring a master’s degree in psychology or maybe not even requiring a lot of training in psychology, it’s certainly going to matter much less to that program. Other things might carry more weight in that case. Maybe the interview is an opportunity to gauge the interpersonal skills of that individual, because that’ll certainly be an important part of training to be a psychologist. Letters of recommendation can speak to the individual’s character.

A lot of programs, for example, will evaluate what type of research skills the individual has. So did they get a lot of research experience in their undergraduate program? And if they didn’t, did they take some time off between their undergraduate and applying for graduate school to do some research activities? That’s one that comes up quite a bit.

Application requirements for doctoral programs in psychology

What are some of the key elements of psychology Ph.D. applications?

There’s a formal application process where candidates will submit required pieces of material to the programs. Obviously they’re going to ask basic demographic information about the candidate. They’ll probably want the candidate to submit transcripts from their undergraduate program—and if they did a master’s program to submit those as well so they can have a way to evaluate the academic history of that individual. Letters of recommendation are a very common required element. They may require a personal statement from the candidate that talks about their goals and their interests, and identifies why that candidate wants to be accepted by that program. Standardized testing is required by some programs, particularly the graduate record examination.

And then a final piece of that would be an interview with the candidate—usually after the paper application materials have been reviewed and there’s been some initial screening. An individual would be asked to either come to the campus to do an interview, or in some cases do a virtual interview where they would meet with the program director, or typically several of the faculty members, just to understand that there’s a fit between the goals of that program and the goals of the applicant.

Are there application elements that are more important than others?

If I were talking to somebody that was interested in applying to graduate school, I’d advise them to look at the strengths of the program. If the program is one where the faculty have a lot of federal grants, they do a lot of research, they emphasize students getting publications or research presentations—well, then I’d say to the applicant, ‘Evaluate your prior research training, how much have you had, what types of research training have you had, does the research areas that you’re interested in match with the research interest of the program?’

Or if it’s a program that’s training people to go on for careers where they are a licensed psychologist and they’re providing healthcare services, then the program wants see that you’ve had maybe an internship in a healthcare setting, or they want you to have a strong goal statement that speaks to how you want to have a career that’s consistent with what the program trains people to do.

This is really getting at this concept that I call goodness of fit . You’re going to spend a lot of time in a doctoral program getting a doctoral degree. So, it makes a lot of sense on the front end to do some research, to make sure that the program is going to help you meet your goals.

"Ideally, the same faculty member is teaching the online course while simultaneously offering the course material on campus," says John Mittenthal, PhD, an associate professor in a master of science in operations management degree program. Mittenthal also serves as faculty coordinator and advisor of the program.

Jennifer Kelly, who earned two master's degrees online, concurs. "I wanted an online program that also had a physical school so if I needed anything, there was a place to go." Kelly also looked for a program that had flexible scheduling and 24-hour technical support. "If there is a technology issue at 11 p.m. and I need something turned in by midnight, I want someone to call."

Recommended Online Programs

Finding the right time to start an online master's degree can be a challenge. It's important to look at where you are in your career and whether or not you are able to balance personal, professional and academic responsibilities. Sid Simone, an online MBA student, took his decision to go back to school seriously. He believes that the time is "when you have schedule flexibility and can balance personal, work and school life."

Mittenthal touts the importance of looking at prerequisites before signing up. "Consult with a program advisor to ensure that the program can be completed within your desired time frame." Many programs won't admit students who have not fulfilled the required prerequisites, and having to complete them first will add to the time it takes to complete a master's degree. For some, this could mean putting the online master's degree on hold to earn the necessary prerequisites.

First and foremost, look for regional accreditation. Pat Partridge, marketing and enrollment specialist at an online university, shares that "accreditation is a must-have to ensure that employers and other academic institutions will respect and recognize your master's degree."

Victoria Bowers, graduate of an online master's in nursing education program, offers a few additional tips: "Schools should provide statistics of graduates, such as percentages of those who have passed boards, if applicable, how many have jobs in a related field, and how many have graduated." Be sure to ask about these statistics as you do your research.

Nowadays, almost every type of master’s degree imaginable is offered online in some form. Some degree programs may necessitate a hybrid-format for hands-on training or laboratory work; however, these programs are generally flexible in the time commitment and location of that in-person requirement. For example, Bowers explains that her online nursing education program included a clinical component. Typically, this would include direct contact with others in the profession or patients for a traditional nursing program. However, because Bowers was in an online program, her instructor allowed her to complete the clinical component online as well.

Technology requirements vary depending on the college and discipline. However, an updated computer with business-compatible software is vital. "Keep your computer current for the best training, especially in the information technology and graphic design fields. You want to train using the most up-to-date software so you are competitive with others when looking for a job," says Scott.

Kelly notes that her program required Web browsers that were specific to her university in order to upload items. The college should inform you of any requirements when you enroll.

The application process for most online master's programs is similar to that of traditional programs. Specific application requirements will vary, but in general, submission of a completed application, official undergraduate transcripts, relevant test scores and letters of recommendation are required.

When Bowers applied for her online nursing education program, she needed to submit personal information as well as official transcripts from prior colleges. More competitive programs may require high school transcripts, a resume, extracurricular activities and recognitions, references, and even a credit report. The university's website should provide information on requirements and deadlines. When in doubt, contact an advisor or the college's admissions office for information

Some colleges may allow you to apply for a master's program while you are finishing a bachelor's degree, but most require that applicants hold a bachelor's degree in a related field prior to applying. An exception to this rule is an RN to MSN bridge program, which completely bypasses the bachelor's degree, according to Bowers.

Federal financial aid is available for students enrolled at an accredited online college who meet certain criteria and have submitted a FAFSA ® form. Private grants and scholarships are also available, and some employers will subsidize tuition. Ask your human resources department whether your company has a tuition reimbursement program. If it does, review the rules and requirements carefully as some programs require a specific grade point average or that you stay with the company for a period of time after graduation in order to be reimbursed.

Additionally, the federal government offers loan forgiveness for graduates who work in public service, such as teachers who work in Title I schools. Government agencies, universities and some large companies may also offer research grants for students willing to donate their time to the organization.

It depends on the program. Mittenthal, for example, reports that his university's master of science in operations management program is virtually identical whether taken online or on-campus. Some distance learning students, however, have found that more independent work is required in an online program. Additionally, some assignments may be modified to accommodate online learning, which makes them slightly different from assignments given in traditional classes.

Partridge notes that colleges are working hard to ensure that online learning is very much the same as taking classes in a brick-and-mortar program. "Online universities are developing a number of ways for students to connect through chat rooms, webinars, and social media. It's important to find out what the school is doing to engage and connect with students," she says.

Indeed, even though students were not in the same physical classroom, Scott had full communication with her professors and peers during her online learning experience. She notes, however, that online students need to be proactive. Scott used online forums and offline study groups and also found some local students with whom she was able to study. "You cannot isolate yourself in an online program," she warns.

The length of an online master's program varies depending on the degree, the program itself and the motivation of the student. Some programs, such as those at the University of Phoenix, start year-round and classes are compressed to just a few weeks, allowing students to complete programs in an accelerated time frame. Other online programs follow a more traditional semester-based calendar and, therefore, can take two to three years to complete.

This depends on your program. Some programs are offered fully online and do not require students to visit campus, while others have some in-person requirements. For example, in her educational leadership degree, Kelly had to take one on-campus course because it was not offered online. Scott, on the other hand, was enrolled at a college that was located several states away. When it was time for her final exams, she had to find a nearby accredited university where she could sit for the test on-site. The local university then mailed her exam to the college where she was enrolled. For her nursing education degree, Bowers was able to complete the program 100 percent online. Check with your college or university for specific online program requirements.

According to Mittenthal, hands-on experience is not always necessary. "Nearly all of the students in our online program are already employed in the field that they wish to pursue, so this is typically not an issue," he says. Scott, however, had a different experience. "You must intern, volunteer, and go beyond the homework to educate yourself in the field," she says. Additionally, some programs that necessitate hands-on experience, such as teaching, will build the requirement into the curriculum. Students can often schedule these obligations around their own personal and professional schedule, within their geographic area.

Most online classes are administered and managed via an online course management system. Blackboard, Taskstream, proprietary university-owned programs, email, Survey Monkey, and other Internet-based programs are the primary modes for submitting assignments.

Exams are administered differently from course to course. Some may allow students to take exams independently online, while others require proctored tests. Or, as in Scott's case, students may need to visit a local, accredited university or an approved test site in person to complete assessments.

Generally, no. Most colleges award the same type of diploma and do not distinguish between degrees that were earned online or on campus. An exception would be if an online-only university conferred the degree-in that case, a current or prospective employer would know it was an online degree.

If the college and program are accredited by an accrediting agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), coursework should be equivalent to a traditional program. Additionally, the requirements to earn an online master's degree are generally parallel to those for an on-campus degree. In fact, some students may find that an online program is actually more rigorous. "I feel that I had to work harder. I had to research things on my own and work very hard to prove my knowledge," says Kelly.

Most colleges do allow their distance learning students to participate in the graduation ceremony once all degree requirements have been completed. "You will have to make arrangements to travel to the graduation ceremony-possibly out of state-but you will receive a cap, gown and a ceremony," Scott reports.

In most cases, yes. Because an online degree from an accredited college is equivalent to a degree earned at a traditional campus, expectations and curriculum tend to be aligned. Check with prospective schools to see which credits can be successful transferred.

Yes! Many employers hire, promote and increase compensation based on the individual's level of education. In terms of your degree being earned online, most employers will recognize and accept the degree if it was earned at an accredited college or university. Accreditation ensures that online programs meet certain academic standards and, therefore, prepare students for the workforce the same way a traditional campus-based program would.

This varies widely depending on the industry and individual students' goals. Simone recommends that prospective students research potential earnings before enrolling in any program. "Financial analysts recommend being in less debt than your projected salary out of school," he says. "Make sure it is something that can be paid off in three years or less."

Scott, however, shared a different perspective. She believes that her ROI is the education itself, rather than the potential for more income. "ROI is about how hard you want to work and it will soon shine as others witness your talent."

Telling a prospective employer that you earned your degree online versus in a more traditional program is up to your personal preference. If your online master's degree is from an accredited university that offers the same program and curriculum as the on-campus program, there really is no difference. If you do choose to disclose this information, or are asked by a potential employer, you can mention what you learned from the online experience. Earning an online degree requires time management and self-motivation, both of which are important skills in the workplace.

Many full-time employees choose to earn a degree online, rather than on a traditional campus, specifically because they are working full time. An online master's degree allows students the flexibility to take classes, view lectures and turn in assignments at their convenience. It's a great opportunity to earn a master's degree while still maintaining your professional and personal schedule.

What Employers Really Think about Your Online Degree

Many students pursuing bachelor’s degrees have busy lives. It may not be possible for them to attend classes in-person due to work, family demands, or other personal commitments. Luckily, there are now many degree programs offered partially or even completely online, meaning these students don’t have to miss out on advancing their careers and achieving their goals.

There may be some reluctance, however, to enroll an online degree program based on worry about how an online degree will be viewed by employers. Are online degrees respected? Can they carry the same weight in a professional environment as a traditional, four-year, on-campus degree?

Here’s the truth about virtual degree programs and the job outlook for those who finish them.

Types of Online Degrees and Programs

Online degrees aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. But for anyone with time restrictions or who lives far away from a physical college campus, it’s a realistic avenue for starting and completing a bachelor’s degree in dozens of respected fields.

Some online degree programs are completed 100 percent online , with no physical interaction with other students or professors . Rather than having to attend class on a set schedule, these students can learn at their own pace, studying and completing assignments in the spare time between work shifts and caring for children.

Other online programs feature a hybrid of online and on-campus instruction . These programs may hold a majority of courses virtually with a few cornerstone courses taking place in-person, or in an internship/incubator environment, so students still get valuable face-to-face mentoring.

It’s also possible to have degree programs that simply have an online component, offering  hybrid classes that combine in-person and online classes for the same course during a semester—giving live or recorded online learning formats to those who need it most.

The Increasing Popularity of Online Degrees

As the advantages of online learning become more widely documented, virtual degrees are becoming an increasingly popular option for students from all walks of life.

According to The National Center for Education Statistics , in 2016:

• Nearly 6 million students—over 28 percent of all college learners—were enrolled in at least one online course at a degree-granting college or university.
• Of those students, over 2.8 million were exclusively online learners with no in-person courses taken.
• The majority of online learners were enrolled in undergraduate programs, with 2.1 million exclusively online learners earning a bachelor’s degree.

With so many online learners making up the student body at top institutions, it’s becoming less acceptable for these degrees to be ignored. Companies have been taking notice of this trend and have adjusted their hiring practices to account for all types of degree-earners.

The Truth About Online Degrees vs. Traditional Degrees

Because of how common online learning has become, there’s a noticeable shift in how many people perceive online degrees; there’s no longer quite the stigma attached to pursuing an education through your home computer. But while it’s easy to share anecdotal evidence of how an online degree is “just as valuable as a traditional classroom-based experience,” there’s also data to prove it.

The Department of Education found that “students in online conditions performed modestly better, on average, than those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face instruction.” In addition, “the effectiveness of online learning approaches appears quite broad across different content and learner types.”

These two statements back up the claim by universities that online degrees are in no way inferior to programs that take place in face-to-face, classroom environments. In fact, they can in some instances provide better outcomes, allowing students who are limited by geography, opportunity, and time to obtain a degree whereas they may have not otherwise been able.

Online Degrees vs. Traditional Degrees: What Employers Really Think

Despite the empirical data, students may still be wary about whether today’s employers consider an online degree to be as good as its on-campus counterpart. How do hiring managers really feel?

The news is positive for online degree holders:

• 61 percent of HR leaders firmly believe that online learning is of equal or greater quality to more traditional methods.
• 71 percent of organizations indicated that they had hired a job applicant with an online degree in the last 12 months.
• 52 percent believe that, in the future, most advanced degrees will be completed online.
• 33 percent believe that, enabled by technology, online education will ultimately be better than traditional face-to-face instruction.

Not all online degree programs are created equal, however. Where you receive your online degree makes a significant difference in how employers will view your credential.

How Employers Evaluate Online Degrees

As many as 83% of business leaders see an online degree at a “well-known” institution as having the same value as an on-campus degree. If they are not familiar with a school, however, or the institution isn’t known for producing prepared graduates from its programs, your degree may not be seen as having the same value. In fact, 58 percent of employers “believe that an institution’s brand and reputation is the main driver of a credential’s value , regardless of whether or not it was earned online.”

Employers are also more likely to embrace an online degree from a school that provides traditional, on-site coursework in addition to its online offerings. According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 92 percent of employers view online degrees from brick-and-mortar schools as favorable , while only 42 percent would consider a candidate with an online degree from a university that operates solely online, despite any accreditation. Many employers infer that brick-and-mortar institutions dedicate the same time and attention to developing online courses as they do for courses held in a physical classroom. Degrees earned from these schools, including Northeastern, are often treated equally.

How to Market Your Online Degree to Employers

More and more employers agree that, for busy professionals who want to better position themselves in the workforce, online degrees are a reputable and flexible alternative to traditional degree programs.

If you’ve completed your online degree (or will in the near future), it’s important to know the right way to frame your education to get the best results in your career search. Even with the growing acceptability of virtual learning environments, it can’t hurt to be mindful with how you describe your education—whether it’s in a resumé or through your in-person elevator pitch.

Here are a few ways to describe your degree to those who may be unfamiliar with the value of an online degree:

• List (or mention) the tangible skills obtained in the program (e.g. project management skills, fluency in computer programming languages, etc.).
• Share industry-accepted accreditation or trade qualifications.
• Detail real-world, hands-on experiences, such as co-ops or capstone projects.
• Mention mentoring partnerships or workshops you participated in.

Keep your description of your online degree program short and sweet; there’s no need to over-explain. Instead, focus on the top two or three aspects of the program that you think are most notable for the industry you want to join. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of career development programs or job counseling service that may be available as part of your college education, as well. University experts are often on hand to help iron out the details of explaining your worth.

Finally, embrace what makes an online degree different from other programs. Admission Information for Our PhD in Psychology

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• Contact information  for 2 recommenders is required (approved recommenders are the student’s former college professors or supervisors).
• Statement of Purpose  is required (1,000-1,500 words, double spaced).
• Departmental approval is required.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
• Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Is It Easier to Get Into an Online Master’s Program?

The way online education is often viewed – as an easy way to go back to school and earn your master’s degree in education or teaching – may lead you to believe that these programs are easy to get into. In fact, the degree of difficulty of getting accepted into an online master’s degree program in education is similar whether you are studying on the university’s physical campus or online. Fortunately, even at schools that are often considered selective, most applicants to an online master’s program who meet eligibility requirements get accepted.

Comparing Admissions Requirements for Online and On-Campus Programs

Although online learning is a popular education option, it hasn’t replaced face-to-face coursework. Many colleges and universities offer both online and on-campus versions of a master’s degree program in teaching or education. At schools with both distance learning and traditional study options, the admissions requirements are just as stringent for applicants to the online program as they are for the on-campus program.

GPA requirements are the same no matter which learning format you choose. If the school requires standardized test scores, letters of recommendation or a personal essay, it typically does so for applicants to both the online and on-campus programs. There is a slight difference in the admissions requirements for online versus face-to-face graduate programs that require an interview. While students planning to complete their studies on campus will usually be asked to come to campus for the interview, schools typically allow a phone interview to take the place of an in-person interview for online students. Although this option makes the logistics of the interview easier, it doesn’t impact the level of difficulty of getting into the program. In fact, some interviewees find it more difficult to build a rapport with interviewers over the phone than in person, where nonverbal cues are part of the interaction.

While not all online master’s programs in education require students to submit GRE or other graduate-level standardized test scores, plenty of online programs do require this data for consideration.

Selectivity at Online Colleges

A big part of determining how easy or difficult it is to get into an online program is to look at how selective that program is. Generally, looking at the acceptance rate of a program, or the percentage of applicants who were admitted to the program, gives you an idea of how selective it is.

Among the top 12 schools ranked on U.S. News & World Report ’s list of the best online graduate education programs, acceptance rates ranged from a low of 68 percent to a high of 94 percent. These acceptance rates may sound high, leading you to believe that the selectivity of these online degree programs is low and that these programs are easy to get into. However, many of these acceptance rates for online graduate programs in education are in line with those of the school’s traditional programs.

For example, Clemson University’s online graduate education program has a 68 percent acceptance rate. While that’s much higher than the 47 percent acceptance rate U.S. News & World Report lists for undergraduate applicants, it’s comparable to the 64 percent overall acceptance rate that Peterson’s reports for Clemson’s graduate school as a whole. The University of Iowa, which accepts 94 percent of applicants to the school’s graduate education programs, also accepts 83 percent of all undergraduate applications, according to U.S. News & World Report . Overall, U.S. News & World Report considers both programs to be “more selective,” despite seemingly high acceptance rates.

Why might a higher percentage of applicants gain into an online master’s program in education compared to the overall acceptance rate for undergraduate students? Often, the rigorous requirements to apply for admission to these graduate-level programs keep less qualified candidates from applying in the first place. For example, non-credentialing programs often require that applicants have a valid teaching license or certification and a minimum number of years of teaching experience just to apply. As a result, the candidates who are eligible to apply are likely to have the qualifications to be accepted.

Before you can qualify for your teaching certification, you need a bachelor’s degree, a minimum GPA, a passing score on one or more exams such as the Praxis tests and student teaching experience – so applicants who meet this requirement already have a lot to offer.
