Biography of James Dashner

James Smith Dashner was born in Austell, Georgia on November 26, 1972. He attended Brigham Young University where he studied accounting but also decided to try his hand at writing, having been an avid reader since childhood. After several attempts, Dashner eventually created the character of Jimmy Fincher. Dashner would expand his story into an outline and eventually produce four books in a series, collectively known as The Jimmy Fincher Saga . After repeated rejections from publishers, Dashner's manuscript was well received by Cedar Fort and his writing career began to take form.

After completion of the four books in the Fincher series, Dashner began another planned trilogy: The Maze Runner . Like the previous saga, this series would again focus on a young boy in a perilous situation. Reviews of The Maze Runner were positive, with many comparing the series to the wildly popular The Hunger Games series. Dashner has also completed a prequel to the series, The Kill Order . Dashner has stated that this series is heavily influenced by William Golding's The Lord of the Flies and Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game .

James Dashner

James Dashner was born in the American city Austell, Georgia in 1972, becoming the seventh child in the family. Since childhood, James dreamt of writing. James's parents had an old typewriter on which he first tried to write, but then the hobby did not go on. After graduating from school, James joined the University of Utah, where he received a master's degree in accounting. Before devoting himself to a career as a writer he worked in the field of finance, but in the end, he took up the old passion.

Since 2003 James has regularly written books for children and adolescents in the genre of fantasy. And his most famous novel – "The Maze Runner" opened the eponymous series, written for an adult audience (Young Adult). The series tells the story of a group of teens. It is unclear how and why they found themselves in a strange Labyrinth inhabited by terrifying creatures.

In 2012, the author laid the foundation of the author's circle of "Infinity Ring." Its structure resembles "39 keys" under the auspices of Rick Riordan. Dashner plans a new series of books – The Mortality Doctrine, whose first novel was released in October 2013: this time the author talks about the cyber world.

In the free time of the creative process, James loves reading, watching movies and good TV shows, skiing. All of this can inspire him to work: for example, "The Maze Runner” was written under the strong influence of "The Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card and William Golding's "Lord of the Flies." Every time James overcomes the creative crisis, he takes a break to watch a movie or read a book. Then ideas just hit the fountain: have time to record.

Currently, James Dashner lives in the Rocky Mountains of Utah with his family and continues to write. According to his confession, the work of the writer is the best work of all, and he is the happiest guy on the planet.

Writing his first work from the Saga Jimmy Fincher series – “A Door in the Woods” the author attempted to find the publisher. Since he did not have the experience of such searches, he merely sent his manuscript to all the publications known to him. Although, similar to every novice author received everywhere a polite refusal. Then he sent the manuscript to three smaller publishing houses, but he got refusing from two of them. But the answer from the third edition has encouraged. It was said that the editor-in-chief had given the book to his eleven-year-old son, and he read it with excitement. It is this child that Dashner James owes his first book, although under the terms of the contract he had to take part of the cost of printing the book.

But the sales of "A Door in the Woods" were not impressive. And then Dashner began to walk around the bookstores and ask the sellers to advise exactly his work. And at first dozens, and then hundreds of books began to be sold. This allowed the author to release the entire series of "Saga Jimmy Fincher" and to engage in the book "The Maze Runner." At the moment, there are already five books in this world-famous series. James Dashner's New "Fever" Code was released in September 2016. In our country, it appeared only at the end of December 2017. Nevertheless, the writer's works are translated into Russian. Confirmation of this was the new book by James Dashner "The Archive of Strange Letters," which opens the series "Thirteenth Reality" for the domestic reader.

In the free time of writing, James loves reading, watching movies and high-quality television shows, skiing. Such a pastime inspires him to work: yes, he wrote "The Maze RUnner" under the strong influence of William Golding's "Lord of Fight" and Orson Scott Card’s "Gay Ender." When James develops a creative crisis again, he is pausing at work - reading books and watching films. After such a "reboot," the writer begins to fountain with new ideas, barely having time to record everything.

Today, James Dashner lives with his family in the Rocky Mountains of Utah, and of course, continues to write. He is convinced that the work of the writer is the best craft, and he is the happiest person on earth.

James Dashner's Journey From Accountant To Wildly Successful Author

The Maze Runner

Utah author James Dashner talks about a few of the 16 books he's written, including The Maze Runner , which is now a feature film. He also describes the process of turning his childhood dream to be an author into reality.

About the book:

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

Maze Runner book

The Maze Runner's James Dashner: Movies are my first love. And that’s how I write

How does it feel to have your best selling novel turned into a Hollywood movie? Site member Patrick Sproull gets to ask James Dashner, as movie version of his book The Maze Runner hits the screens across the UK

  • Now test your skills in death-defyingly tough Maze Runner quiz

For The Maze Runner movie you didn’t write the screenplay, which is not uncommon with big screen adaptations of YA novels but did you find it at all difficult handing over something that has been your baby since 2008?

I admit I was nervous at first, only because I love movies so much and had seen so many bad adaptations throughout the years. But luckily for me, Fox made it clear from the very beginning that they wanted me to be a part of the creative team. I didn’t write the screenplay, but I consulted on it and gave extensive feedback. Director Wes Ball and Producer Wyck Godfrey also asked me many clarifying questions along the way. All of this meant the world to me.

James Dashner

How has it been to watch The Maze Runner go from the page to the screen?

It’s been surreal and hard to describe. I’m still not sure I’ve truly wrapped my head around its awesomeness. This entire experience has definitely been the highlight of my career.

If there was anything about The Maze Runner (the book, that is) that you could change – what would it be?

Oh, that’s a really hard question that I try hard to avoid. I know, cop out! But I know how I personally feel about books that I love. They become sacred to its readers. And I don’t think I have the right to mess with that. The books are and will always be their own thing and speak for themselves. Once I let go, I can’t mess with it anymore.

When you first wrote The Maze Runner, did you ever imagine it would be turned into a movie? And with the rise of YA books transitioning to the cinema over the past few years, did you later consider it?

I absolutely considered it that way from the very beginning. Movies are my first love. And that’s how I write - I envision the story cinematically, picture it in my head, and then do my best to translate that to the written word. I wasn’t arrogant enough to think it would happen this way, but I certainly hoped it. Always.

Maze Runner still 1

What were the strongest influences on you when you originally wrote The Maze Runner?

Everything from the terrifying garden maze scene in The Shining, to Lord of the Flies, to Ender’s Game, to the TV show Lost. So much of what I loved poured out of me and influenced the story.

We’ve had a long wait for the film to be released here in the UK yet but already a sequel has been announced – how do you feel about that?

I couldn’t be happier! I hate that people in the UK had to wait longer, but I know the powers that be have their reasons. I really think the wait will be worth it. We’ve known for a long time that The Scorch Trials would be made, but it was so nice, so exciting, to see it finally made official. I think it’s going to blow away the first film.

Which element of the book were you most concerned about being represented well in the film?

The casting. I’m a lover of storytelling, and I know that the most important element is always the characters themselves. If no one cares about them, then nothing else matters. So the cast meant everything in this movie. And boy did they nail it. I feel so incredibly lucky.

What would you tell your 10-year-old self now?

I’d say, “Hey, kid, you’re a big nerd. Embrace it. And all those stories you keep writing? Don’t stop.”

What book do you think every young person should read?

Besides The Maze Runne r, you mean? Just kidding. I’d say Lord of the Flies . It really makes you think about what it means to be human.

And, for the uninitiated, why do you think we should read/see The Maze Runner?

Well, I’m obviously biased, but I think that both the books and the movie will pleasantly surprise those assuming it’s more of the same. I wrote it ten years ago, and it’s a mixture of everything I love about books: mystery, adventure, the unexpected, etc. Just give it a shot! I’ll go ahead and throw out a Dashner Guarantee that you’ll like it. Or at least gain a respectable fear of mazes.

After he graduated from Duluth High School in 1991 he attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a Degree in Accounting. He originally worked in finance before deciding to turn his hand to writing.

Dashner knew he wanted to be a writer very early on. An avid, even obsessive reader, he would read anything that he was able to get hold of from The Lord of the Rings to The Hardy Boys. His inspiration comes from the countless books that he has read the many TV programs and movies that he had seen over the years. Lord of the Flies as well as Ender’s Game where huge influenced on his The Maze Runner.

His writing has won him many accolades, with his book The Maze Runner sitting on the New York Times Bestseller list for a year. Other awards he has won are NY State Charlotte Award, Kentucky Bluegrass Award, Missouri Truman Readers Award the New Hampshire Isinglass Teen Read award among others.

The theme of his Young Adult Novels is fantasy and science fiction. Probably the better of his known works are The 13th Reality series and The Maze Runner series.

The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner series consists of four novels, beginning with the Maze Runner and followed by The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure and finally The Kill Order. This series of novels revolve around the end of human civilization and a loss our a moral compass leading to confusion.

In The Maze Runner which is book one, the Gladers, a group of kids who like him are alone, are trying to retain a sense of normalcy which they think that they may possibly remember. They do they by hanging on to rules of their microsociety.

Book two, The Scorch Trials, sees them pushed out of their comfort zones after being forced to fight for their lives and all the while search for answers.

The third book in the Maze Runner series, The Death Cure, continues follwoing the Gladers as they make a final decision which can lead to either life or death.

The fourth and final novel in this series, Prequel: The Kill Order, takes the reader back to how the Gladers got where they are and the fall of mankind as they know it.

These novels speak of double crossing, survival of the fittest and total chaos. The decisions that need to be made by The Gladers, grow more difficult and quite often don’t pay off as hoped.

The 13th Reality Series

Book one in The 13th Reality Series; The Journal of Curious Letters, follows Atticus Higginbottom otherwise known as Tick who is your normal every day 13 year old boy. That is until he gets a letter foretelling him of events which could be the destruction of reality.

The Hunt for Dark Infinity is number two in the series. People from all Realities are going totally insane and people are just disappearing. There is a clue that there is a new weapon being worked on but Tick is unsure how to stop this from happening.

Book three, The Blade of Shattered Hope, sees things change for Tick. He is being schooled in science but just when he starts making any progress the Blade Of Shattered Hope is created and Tick, Sato, Paul and Sofia have a dangerous task to complete that they cannot fail.

The Void of Mist and Thunder is the fourth book in the series and will be released in stages.

Dashner’s dream came true when he found out that The Maze Runner was to made into a motion picture. Due to hit theaters in February, this movie will be highly anticipated by Dashner fans. He has been lucky enough to be involved in the movie project. Giving feedback, meeting the actors and he will also make an appearance in the film.

James Dashner created Jimmy Fincher in 1998. Believing that the story was a horrible attempt at writing he gave up and decided to start again by writing a simple outline with turned into a book map. Eventually he came up with a coherent story. He sent off letters to any agent or publisher that he could find. The rejection letters started rolling in, not giving up he sent off more letters to three small publishing companies. Cedar Fort, a publishing company owned by the Church of the Latter Day Saints finally expressed an interest. They eventually published him and the rest as they say is history.

By writing these books for kids and young adults Dashner feels he can inspire them to accomplish their dreams by relating to them how difficult it was for him to get published and encouraging them not to give up, much like the characters in his books.

The author is extremely popular on the speaking circuit and spends a lot of his time visiting schools. He has a reputation for being an amusing speaker and particularly loves speaking at schools. Dashner tries to make the event fun and using any ideas that the kids have, turn them into a story.

He advises people who are thinking or trying to get a book published is to know who to send it to. After making sure that this is the best that your book can possibly be by getting plenty of people to read it and critique is, James says, to find the book Writers Market. His other advice is don’t print out your whole manuscript and mail it to every possible person in the book. Sort out your 10 – 20 top publishers that match your genre and send off your query exactly as they instruct. If it worked for James Dashner it must be a good way to do things.James Dashner currently resides in the Rocky Mountains with his wife, Lynette. He has four children, which he makes sure he spends as much time as possible with. In his spare time the author enjoys going to the movies, reading, going to the theater and his overall favorite thing, anything to do with sport. He also enjoys really good TV shows and show skiing.
