IELTS essay about obesity and its causes and solutions

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published January 24, 2017 · Updated March 24, 2024

Essay topic

The number of people who are at risk of serious health problems due to being overweight is increasing. What is the reason for the growth in overweight people in society? How can this problem be solved?

Sample essay

Over the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of overweight people in the world. This can be attributed to unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity. Obesity is a major health problem. It is a risk factor for diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

Excessive consumption of junk foods is the number one cause of obesity. Junk or fast foods are rich in calories and unhealthy fats. When we consume more calories than our body can burn, it will convert the excess calories into fat. As a result people who consume calorie rich foods on a regular basis gain weight. Late night dinners are another cause of weight gain. When we have a heavy meal immediately before going to bed, the body does not get an opportunity to burn it. Our sedentary lifestyle is also to blame. Most of us have jobs that allow us to spend our entire day in a chair. This lack of physical activity reduces our requirement for calories. Still, we are consuming more calories than we need.

Limiting the consumption of calories and making physical activity an important part of your routine is the only way to combat obesity. Our bodies are designed to move. When we exercise, we not only burn the excess calories but also reduce our risk for a variety of illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. We need to make proper changes to our eating habits too. We must make a conscious effort to stay away from fatty foods. We must also ensure that we are having low calorie healthy meals at regular intervals.

To conclude, while it is true that the number of obese people is on the rise this problem can be tackled by making appropriate changes to our lifestyle and eating habits.

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Essay topic

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

Band 8 essay sample

It is a fact that in some countries, the average weight of the citizens is shooting up while their fitness and health conditions are worsening. In my view this is mainly because of the food habits and modern lifestyle they follow. In this essay, I will examine these two factors and then propose a viable solution.

One of the foremost reasons for obesity is the consumption of unhealthy foods. Many people started to follow western food habits and eventually ended up eating high fat content foods like pizza and burger. Regular consumption of these fat rich foods will increase a person’s weight in a short span of time.

In addition to that, now-a-days, more and more people are living a sedentary lifestyle. They do not dedicate any time to do any kind of physical activity. As a result, they lose their resistance power. If this lifestyle continues then people will fall ill more frequently and lose their health permanently.

It is necessary that the government takes steps to open many sports complexes and fitness studios near residential communities. Most of the people who do not want to travel far to go to a sports center will be ready to use one if it is available nearby. In a study conducted by a popular newspaper 90% of the respondents said that they are willing to use the gym or any physical activity centers if they are within 3 kilometer radius.

To conclude, encouraging people to do more physical activities will not only improve their fitness and overall health but also help people to shed their weight.

In recent times, the count of obese or overweight individuals is continually on the rise. This essay will talk about the key reasons behind such an epidemic of obesity while then talking about the possible effects of the issue.

The biggest causes or reasons behind mushrooming obesity include lack of physical activity and poor eating habits such as eating at the wrong time or switching to junk food over healthy food. More and more individuals now rely on cars or bikes for commuting instead of walking or taking public transportation while also executing work of a less physically demanding nature. In most cases, they also choose leisure and recreational activities that are not high on the physical activity quotient. These factors lead to lesser calories being burned and rampant weight gain. The problem is further worsened by the growing tendency to consume unhealthy meals and fast food, high in calories and other harmful elements. For instance, reports state how 50% of the European adult population suffers from obesity chiefly due to eating disorders and lack of a balanced dietary regime.

Possible effects of this issue include mental and physical ailments and productivity losses. Firstly, obesity leads to improper functioning of our bodies and higher propensities for chronic disorders. For instance, with a rise in overall body fat percentages, people's metabolisms get impacted, leading to ailments such as heart diseases or even diabetes in some cases. Secondly, obese or overweight individuals are more likely to be unhealthy and give in to tiredness or stress alike. This further reduces their overall working productivity and abilities. For instance, studies often show that overweight individuals need to work harder to finish several tasks compared to their peers with balanced or normal weight levels.

To conclude, obesity is a major issue that has impacted a large chunk of society recently. It is chiefly caused by sedentary lifestyles and lack of a balanced diet, and various other factors. It leads to chronic and severe issues while also leading to productivity losses. (332 words)

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

Obesity may be technically defined as a health condition where an individual accumulates excessive fat in the body, negatively affecting their health levels. The growing obesity rate is majorly caused due to several lifestyle factors across developed and developing countries alike. This article will discuss the societal impact of an increasing number of overweight or obese citizens in detail.

The first and foremost reason behind the increasing rate of obesity can be unhealthy dietary changes daily and a fast-paced lifestyle that promotes junk food for its taste and the reason it gets instantly ready. A growing number of citizens end up opting for unhealthy food items with higher sugar content, and many consume fried and junk food regularly. The inclination of people towards junk food has been further accentuated by the proliferation of popular brands selling unhealthy fast food. Though this daily lifestyle may still be okay for the underweight, it will lead to a severe increase in fat levels for regular individuals. They ultimately become overweight or obese within a few years of following such unhealthy lifestyles.

Societies with growing obesity rates may also witness a concurrent lack of physical activity and exercise in these people. Higher pressures of professional and social commitments while neglecting physical education and sports at educational institutions are reasons behind the lack of exercise amongst all age groups.

Some may argue that with prospective health ailments and risks turning graver in recent times, it may be a good idea to remain overweight or obese if it has a positive impact on the immune system, without sudden or fluctuating changes in body weight. Yet, studies in several nations have clearly indicated how obesity leads to severe issues linked to sleeping patterns, heart ailments, focus, and diabetes, along with many other problems. If not fixed at the outset, overweight or obese individuals may ultimately face critical health scenarios that may eventually pose risks to their lives.

While the evidence does not exist suitably about overweight citizens contributing more towards the socio-economic growth or higher productivity of nations, the simple rule of thumb is that they require higher food than regular individuals. As can be seen, this directly accentuates the rising burden on global food and agricultural production.

To conclude, a higher obesity rate is mainly due to higher consumption of unhealthy food and lack of physical exercise due to several prevalent factors today. Obesity is thus a harbinger of serious health risks and issues that will only impact people negatively. (420 words)

Overweight Children Essay

Parents of obese children should be punished for making their children overweight. Do you agree or disagree? It is argued that obese children’s parents should be held responsible and punished for making their children fat. They should be considerate about their children’s health. This essay agrees with this opinion because parents should take care of their children’s diet and should make them health cautious. Parents have the power to take control of their children’s diet and make them eat healthy food. This will fulfill their children’s body needs which will help in their growth. Eating junk food is bad for health and will make children fat when consumed excessively. Fast foods, for instance, burgers and pizzas will cause obesity over long-term consumption. Hence, parents should make a proper diet plan and make their children follow it. Parents, not only, should worry about their children’s health but should also make their children take care of themselves. Parents should make their children aware of the consequences of bad eating habits. They, for example, can show them what will happen to them like obesity if they consume junk food over a long period of time. This will make their children’s health cautious. In conclusion, I would say that parents should give priority to their children and their health over all other things. They can give their children a healthy life by making their children eat good and nutritious food and stay away from junk food. Otherwise, not only obesity but blood pressure and many other diseases will damage their children’s life. Hence, they should be held accountable for their children’s health and fitness.

Essay 285 – Obesity is an increasing public health problem

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 285.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Obesity is an increasing public health problem in some parts of the world.

Explain some possible reasons for this problem, and suggest some solutions.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer 1:

The epidemic of obesity continues in many countries around the globe. This essay will first expound on how poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle are the root causes of this swelling and alarming issue, followed by a discussion that education, exercise, and laws are the most effective solution.

Unhealthy diets and an inactive lifestyle are the primary cause of overweight. In the developed world, where people are living a fast-paced life laden with tasks, deadlines, assignments, and so on, cooking healthy meals at home for the family proves next to impossible as it takes a considerable amount of time. This, in turn, brings about an immense popularity of junk food and fast food in society. To put it another way, KFC, Pizza Hut, and McDonald which cover almost every nook and cranny of the street are selling food that contains an exorbitant amount of calories. According to a stunning report by the Overweight Association in Australia, Australian citizens only consume about 15% of the calories from junk food, and the remaining 85% of calories remain in their bodies. Thus poor diet is directly linked to obesity. Moreover, due to our busy lives, we have little time to exercise. Modern tools and devices also make us inactive as we need less physical exertion in the current age.

However, the best remedy for this issue of obesity is to educate the public about the dangerous consequence of being obese. If the public has comprehensive knowledge about the types of diseases associated with being overweight, they might think twice before going to the local fast-food restaurant. Moreover, companies should facilitate a well-equipped gym so that employees can work out at least twice a week. If employees do exercise, the activity will help them burn off calories and avoid weight gain. Furthermore, the government ought to pass a law to restrict the marketing of foods that contain excessive fats, sugars, and salts, especially foods targeted at children and young adults.

To conclude, many people are struggling with their body weight due to consuming too much fast food accompanied by a sedentary lifestyle. However, this issue can be alleviated by education, exercise, and law.

Model Answer 2:

Obesity has emerged as a pressing public health concern in many parts of the world. This essay will explore some potential reasons for the rise in obesity rates and propose some effective solutions to tackle this problem.

Several factors contribute to the increasing prevalence of obesity. Firstly, sedentary lifestyles have become more common due to advancements in technology and changes in work environments. Many individuals spend prolonged periods sitting and engaging in activities that require minimal physical exertion. As a result, calorie expenditure decreases, leading to weight gain. Secondly, dietary habits have shifted towards the consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods. Fast food chains and processed food options have become easily accessible and affordable, leading to a rise in unhealthy eating habits. Additionally, the marketing of sugary beverages and high-fat snacks has influenced consumer choices.

Addressing the issue of obesity requires a multifaceted approach involving various stakeholders. Firstly, promoting awareness and education about healthy lifestyles is essential. Governments, schools, and communities should collaborate to implement comprehensive health education programmes that emphasise the importance of regular physical activity and nutritious diets. By instilling these habits from an early age, individuals are more likely to adopt healthy behaviours as they grow older. Furthermore, creating an environment that supports physical activity is crucial. This can be achieved through initiatives such as building more parks, recreational facilities, and bicycle lanes, which encourage individuals to engage in active lifestyles. Additionally, workplaces can promote employee well-being by offering incentives for physical activity during breaks or providing on-site fitness facilities. Finally, the authority may impose stricter regulations on the advertising and marketing of unhealthy foods to children, implement taxes on sugary beverages, and establish nutritional standards for school meals.

In conclusion, the rise in obesity rates is a complex issue that requires comprehensive action from individuals, communities, and governments. By addressing the sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits, and the environment that perpetuates obesity, we can make significant strides towards a healthier future.
