The Psychological Research Centre is a thriving academic community made up of active researchers in a wide variety of areas. Research in the centre is internationally recognised and has a significant impact through benefits to society. There are three research groups: Cognitive and Biological, Social Psychological, and Health and Well-being. All staff and postgraduate students belong to one or more of these groupings, and research that crosses thematic boundaries is also encouraged.

The centre welcomes postgraduate research students from around the world as members of this community and provides support and facilities to enable them to achieve their full potential in a stimulating and lively environment.

The centre provides an excellent range of research facilities and support including well equipped office space, technical and administrative support, regular research seminars, an annual postgraduate conference, journal clubs, and social events. Why study Psychology (Conversion) | Online at Keele University?

Course overview, course summary.

Our fully online MSc Psychology (conversion) comprises a Master of Science programme that will provide you with Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society  (subject to programme accreditation), (a pplication for accreditation submitted to the British Psychological Society). This offers equivalent recognition to successfully completing a British Psychological Society accredited undergraduate psychology degree, which is an essential requirement to enable you to pursue a career in most recognised psychology professions.

The programme, which requires no prior knowledge of the subject, will provide you with a solid grounding across the breadth of psychology. As you start the programme you will be introduced to the foundational elements of social psychology, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, biological psychology, personality and individual differences, and qualitative and quantitative research methods applied to psychology. In the second semester you will continue to develop your core psychological knowledge but we will also broaden your thinking. The module “Grand Challenges in Psychology” will enable you to place your knowledge of psychology in the context of the wider world. The module “Applying Psychology” will lead you to reflect on the skills you have developed and how to articulate them to future employers or education providers, preparing you for the next steps in education or employment. Throughout the programme, you will undertake a dissertation project, working with one-to-one guidance from an active psychology researcher.

We know that many students choose to study an MSc Psychology (conversion) programme because they are changing careers, and so our programme has been developed with this in mind. Our assessments have been designed to help you develop skills that are relevant for the workplace, rather than merely testing your knowledge. The foundational knowledge you will gain is rigorous – postgraduate study will lead you to develop a deep knowledge of the discipline. Studying at Keele School of Psychology you will have access to a wide variety of teams and individuals to support your future career after you graduate. Additionally, the School and University run a broad array of events in which you will get to interface with industry professionals (e.g., Clinical or Forensic Psychologists). The ethos of the programme is to provide a rigorous education in psychology that you can undertake around existing commitments, with an underlying goal of getting you ready for the next steps in your career.‌

Keele university: counselling and psychotherapy, full-time, 1 years starts sep 2024.

Make a difference to the lives of others by gaining the knowledge skills and experience to practice as a professional counsellor. Our British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) accredited MSc combines academic study with counselling skills practice, facilitating your personal and professional development as well as offering you a grounding in research methodology.

**Why choose this course?** - Both our full-time and part-time programmes are accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

- Learn from active practitioners in counselling who have a wealth of experience in providing counselling training to both UK and international students

- You will acquire a theoretical grounding in person-centred/humanistic counselling and an introduction to research methodologies

- Keele has a thriving counselling community with students from a range of professional, cultural, social and educational backgrounds

Our MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy incorporates three strands of counselling training - namely counselling theory, counselling practice and personal development.

The philosophy of the programme is humanistic with a focus on person-centred practice. The core theoretical model of the course is derived from an acceptance of Carl Rogers’ belief in the self-therapeutic capacity and wisdom of clients (1967). The philosophical traditions of existentialism and phenomenology are used to illuminate understanding of humanistic practice through lectures and small group work.

You will be encouraged to examine and question your own beliefs and assumptions to develop a personal, integrated theory of human development, based upon humanistic phenomenological philosophy and principles. We do this by offering you opportunities to reflect upon the theory that is offered in light of your own experience - to develop your own philosophical and theoretical base.

Research Interests

Translational research in eating disorders, including biological and psychological factors that contribute to binge eating and purging behaviors; nosology and statistical approaches to classification; longitudinal and epidemiological studies of psychological, social and cultural factors that influence eating disorders and body image.

Current Research

Current projects include an examination of psychological and biological factors that may distinguish individuals with purging disorder (characterized by recurrent purging following normal or small amounts of food in individuals who are not underweight) from individuals with bulimia nervosa and individuals without eating disorders. We are also developing papers from a 4th assessment wave of a large epidemiological and longitudinal study of bulimic syndromes in which we have sampled college cohorts in 1982, 1992, 2002, and now 2012 with successive waves of 10-, 20-, and now 30-year follow-up assessments of established cohorts. Finally, we have a large grant examining the biological consequences of weight suppression and how these may explain the association between weight suppression and illness maintenance in bulimic syndromes.

University of Wyoming psychology graduate student Jaylan Aliev, of Boise, Idaho, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

As a second-year graduate student in the psychology and law Ph.D. program, Aliev’s research interests include juror perceptions of marginalized victims, how these perceptions affect legal decision-making and how to mitigate juror biases.

“Child sexual abuse is a national health crisis, and the process of seeking justice for victims can often be retraumatizing,” Aliev says. “Countless child sexual abuse narratives do not follow the popular culture prototype that suggests victims are young girls and perpetrators middle-aged men, and it is important to investigate how older or male victims of child sexual abuse are treated in the legal system -- and how such demographic factors may influence mock juror decision-making in these cases.”

Aliev’s current work examines the impact of victim physical maturity on legal decision-making in cases of child sexual abuse. Her secondary line of research focuses on analyzing racial, socioeconomic, geographic and policy disparities in the U.S. juvenile legal system.

“Receiving the news that I was a 2024 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship awardee felt like a dream,” she says. “I am a first-generation high school and college graduate, as well as first-generation American. My initial thought was, ‘Things like this don’t happen to people like me.’”

In May, Aliev will graduate with her master’s degree in psychology, and she looks forward to beginning her graduate fellowship research plans.

“As I have gained more experience working with community partners, I have become extremely interested in disseminating psycho-legal research in a way that informs public policy and aims to improve our current criminal legal system,” she says.

After earning her Ph.D., she hopes to continue her work at a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization as a researcher or data analyst.

“It still has not fully sunk in that my application was one of the 2,000 that was selected as a recipient out of tens of thousands of applications,” Aliev says. “I immediately started crying and then called my adviser, Kayla Burd (UW assistant professor of psychology), and my parents.”

To learn more about Aliev’s research, email her at [email protected] .

Psychology’s 2024 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Recipients

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP) program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The NSF GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education.

Jessica Arend

Jessica Arend is a second-year PhD student in the Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research Program (CSPR). Jessica is advised by Dr. Angus MacDonald and is a member of the  TRiCAM Lab . With the NSF GRFP, she intends to investigate how experiences of discrimination may impact reward learning among people with multiply-marginalized, intersectional identities. Jessica is motivated by research questions that explore which sociocultural and neurobiological factors affect a person's risk for, or resilience against, developing mental health symptoms. Ultimately, they hope to better characterize how and why individuals with serious mental illness experience changes in cognition.

Abby Person

Abby Person is a second-year PhD student in Social Psychology advised by Dr. Jeffry Simpson and Dr. Patricia Frazier. With this fellowship, Abby intends to explore the process by which sexual assault victims disclose their experiences to their romantic partners. She is particularly interested in the role of sexual assault stigma and how partners' reactions to the disclosure impact the relationship. Abby is a member of the  Social Interaction Lab and Pat Frazier's Stress and Trauma Lab .

Maya Rogers

Maya Rogers is a current second-year Social Psychology PhD student working with Drs. Alex Rothman and Traci Mann. Her research focuses on health behavior decision-making and persuasive communication, primarily around vaccination. With this research fellowship, Maya will continue her work in motivational message matching for COVID-19 vaccines as well as assessing the cognitive effects of offering financial incentives for vaccines. Since 2022, Maya has been a member of the  Health and Eating Lab .

Intrinsic Traveling Waves and Visual Perception

Perceptual sensitivity varies from moment to moment. One potential source of this variability is spontaneous fluctuations in neural sensitivity. Using newly developed techniques to characterize the moment-to-moment dynamics of multi-electrode data, we find that spontaneous cortical activity is organized into traveling waves that traverse visual cortex several times per second. Recording in Area MT of the common marmoset, we find that these intrinsic traveling waves (iTWs) regulate both the gain of the stimulus-evoked spiking response and the monkey’s perceptual sensitivity. In monkeys trained to detect faint visual targets, the iTW state prior to target onset predicts the magnitude of target-evoked neural response and the likelihood that the monkey will detect the target. A large-scale spiking network model with conductance-based synapses recapitulates the properties of iTWs measured in vivo. The model shows that iTWs naturally emerge from the delays that occur as action potentials traverse unmyelinated horizontal fibers. The model predicts that iTWs are sparse, in the sense that only a small fraction of the neural population participates in any individual iTW. As a result, iTWs can occur without inducing correlated variability, which we have found, in separate experiments, can impair sensory discrimination. We thus refer to the model as the sparse-wave model of iTWs. The model also predicts that iTWs fall into feature-selective motifs whose selectivity stems from the horizontal fibers that preferentially connect similarly tuned feature domains. Consistent with this prediction, we find that some iTWs do fall into motifs and some of these motifs modulate neural activity and perceptual sensitivity in a feature-selective manner. Taken together, these findings lead to the conclusion that traveling waves strongly modulate neural and perceptual sensitivity, in a feature-selective manner. These findings are consistent with studies of traveling waves in the motor system, suggesting that iTWs may represent a brain-wide computational principle.
