The Master of Research degree prepares prospective PhD candidates for doctoral research in a specific area; a programme of projects, seminars and lectures is offered an area of research and can be tailored to help the student identify a specific PhD topic. Some programmes are designed to allow students to gain a breadth of experience across a range of multidisciplinary approaches to a particular topic.

An MRes has a major research element - which may be in the form of a number of short lab projects in rotation, which you will write up for assessment - but also a menu of taught elements providing training in a variety of general and discipline-specific research methods.

The MRes is generally offered as part of a four-year doctoral programme. In these four-year programmes, the MRes is offered ONLY in conjunction with the PhD; and continuation to the PhD is subject to satisfactory performance in the MRes and the indentification of a suitable topic and supervisor.

Postgraduate research

At the University of Salford, we are committed to solving many of the complex challenges society faces today, through pioneering challenge-led research and solutions-focused enterprise. Our innovative research environment is recognised around the world, offering PGR researchers the platform to establish a profile and develop international networks.

We have a large community of research students across our different research centres. All our researchers have access to our Doctoral School, where we offer student support and training to help you become the best researcher you can be.

Choosing the right university is a big decision, so take a look at the information below to find out more about becoming a PhD student at Salford and how this can support your plans for the future.

What is a research degree?

A research degree offers you the chance to become an expert in the field that you are passionate about. It also provides you with the opportunity to examine and investigate an innovative and novel area of research.

You will shape the future through innovation, whilst developing specialist skills that you can apply to the workplace.

Under the guidance of our supervisors, you’ll take full responsibility for your work and given the freedom to make your own contribution to your chosen subject area or research. At the University of Salford we offer several research degrees: the Master of Research, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and PhD. The PhD or doctoral degree is the highest academic degree awarded by universities in the UK.

The length and structure of a research degree depends on the pathway and course chosen. Download our postgraduate research study guide to find out more about the different options available.

Our research specialisms

Our thriving research centres are based across our four academic schools. Take a look at your area of interest below to find out more about our research culture, academic strengths and the opportunities available to you at Salford.

Arts, Media and Creative Technology

Our School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology attracts students from across the world, creating a vibrant and dynamic research environment, encouraging collaboration, interdisciplinary practice and international networking.

Salford is a great environment for Arts, Media and Creative Technology researchers as we engage with the real-world impacts of 21st century challenges, offer world-class performance and exhibition spaces in our New Adelphi building, and unite researchers, artists, designers, and other creative practitioners in the Salford International Innovation Studio at MediaCity.

Research areas

  • The Creative Technologies Research Centre  explores the crossover between creative practices and emerging technologies, focusing on research projects that use technology in areas such as film, music, performance, broadcasting, games, immersive media, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • The  English Research Centre and our centre for Practice as Research  recognise the importance of linking their research with cultural life outside of the University as they take an innovative approach to exploring hybrid and inter-disciplinary ways of working through their examination of marginal, experimental and emergent practices. Their work is critically engaged and culturally relevant as they focus on the readings of neglected and transgressive authors and cultural practices: from writings of conflict in Northern Ireland to Victorian Sensation fiction, from discontented minds in Early Modern Drama to the representation of serial killers in film and fiction, from African modernism to the hidden meanings of place names.
  • The Politics and Contemporary History Research Centre  is interested in a variety of political and historical themes grouped around the field of International Security in the broadest sense. Our staff also have research interests around European party politics, ideologies and intelligence studies, military history, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, and several other aspects of international politics and security around Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia.
  • Art and Design Research and Engagement (Design Against Crime Solutions). This area of research unites senior, proactive researchers and emerging, early career researchers who engage in theoretical and practice-based creative investigations across a range of art and design areas, from design for health and wellbeing to games for social change to design against crime.

Geographic Data Science

PhD Geographic Data Science

This program trains the next generation of geographic data and quantitative social scientists who are interested in understanding how to use data science and other quantitative methods to tackle pressing geospatial challenges in social and natural environments. Examples of geographic data-driven methods include but are not limited to statistical methods; machine learning; artificial intelligence; GIS; earth observation and social sensing; cartography and data visualization; data infrastructure and management; and causal inference. Geospatial challenges can be broadly interpreted as any problems that involve using geospatial data. Particularly, potential supervisors at the University of Bristol have expertise in policy, demography, social inequality, social geography, sustainability, human mobility, digital economy, cities, health, climate science, education, and so on.

In contrast to its sister programs, PhD in Human Geography and PhD in Physical Geography, this program emphasises methodological innovation and application. It is aimed at those interested in advancing existing computational methods or applying state-of-the-art digital and data-driven techniques to any topics that are related to geography. We welcome applicants from any relevant background, such as geography, social science and policy, statistics, computer science, cognitive science, and environmental science.

Lift paid work cap for international PhD students, UK urged

International postgraduate research students should be allowed to work longer than 20 hours in university settings, says uuki-commissioned report.

Visa rules that prohibit international postgraduate research students in the UK undertaking more than 20 hours of paid work per week at their university should be reviewed, a new study recommends.

Highlighting what it calls the “important role” played by overseas PhD students in “powering the engine” of UK science and research, the report explains how 42 per cent of the UK’s postgraduate research (PGR) students (49,830 in 2022-23) are from overseas – of which about half are clustered at 15 research-intensive universities.

That proportion has stayed broadly constant at about 40 per cent since 2018-19, with many PhD supervisors stating that “universities simply could not run many of their PhD programmes without international PGR students’ input,” explains the  report , titled Powering the engine: The non-financial contribution of international postgraduate students to the UK , which was commissioned by Universities UK International (UUKi), and undertaken by analysts from consultancies Public First and Counterculture.

Overall, the biggest source of international PGRs was China in 2022-23 (12,295 postgraduates), followed by the European Union (10,355), Saudi Arabia (3,045) and the US (2,785). Over the previous three years, postgraduate research numbers from Europe fell steadily while Asian numbers climbed.

Despite their pivotal importance, however, there is a “lack of any deliberate government strategies to attract, retain, and maximise the benefits of international PGR students”, explains the report, which describes this as a “missed opportunity to enhance the UK’s research base, given the benefits these students bring”.

One obstacle that could be removed concerned visa restrictions on the amount of paid work that international PhDs can undertake, which is generally capped at 20 hours a week in term time, even if it related to professional roles within a university that could enhance the skills of PhD graduates.

The government should “review the practicalities of an exemption to working time limits where an international PGR student is employed by their own university in a role which is adjacent to their programme”, urges the report.

It also urges the government to consider whether the post-study visa rules for PhD graduates are still competitive, noting that a chemical scientist with a PhD would normally require a salary of at least £31,000 to obtain a three-year skilled worker visa.

Additionally, the Home Office should “urgently review whether the collation of incidental costs to study, and mandated upfront payments, including visa fees and the  Immigration Health Surcharge [at about £1,000 a year] are inhibiting the attraction of international PGR students” and whether these “pricing strategies” were deterring high-skilled researchers from coming to the UK.

In addition, the report also urges universities to do more to capture the benefits of having international PGRs, including gathering more data on graduate outcomes and PhDs’ research outputs.

For instance, the report found that the 23,690 PhD students at 22 leading research universities were likely to be responsible for about 10,000 research outputs in their time at university.

Drawing on the words of one PhD supervisor interviewed for the study, the report concludes that “international PGR students ‘power the engine’ of the UK’s science and research capabilities, providing new insights and technical capacity.

“However, we have not yet done enough to measure their impact and unless measures are taken to join up policy initiatives, address challenges in the visa regime, collect better data, and otherwise make explicit how valued their contribution is, the UK risks losing their talents to other nations.”
