How to Get a Scientific Research Job in the US (If You Are Coming from Elsewhere)

DIY method for isolating yeast

Growing up in Australia, I remember a common phrase: ‘only in America’. Sometimes this was in reference to bizarre cultural events or phenomena but it was generally accepted that the USA was an extraordinary place, where everything was bigger, brighter, and more outrageous. America has fostered a culture of big ideas and innovation, partly because starting a business is relatively straightforward and an unsuccessful business venture is not necessarily seen as a failure. Life sciences and biotech in America can also take advantage of fast delivery times and increased reagent availability, as many companies producing research products are headquartered in or have a significant presence in the USA.

Based on 2017 statistics , there are 1.4 million employees in life sciences in the USA and more than 2500 biotech companies. Of these 2500 companies, some will be small startups with only a handful of employees while the ‘pharma giants’, such as Pfizer and Merck, employ tens of thousands of people. Add to this the number of prestigious universities and other non-profit institutions conducting research and it’s clear that there’s plenty of potential opportunities for job-hunting scientists in the USA. However, you may be wondering how a non-US citizen can go about finding employment, especially if you’re located in a far-off country.

You’ll hear it 100 times during any job search – network , network , network .

First, make sure that your LinkedIn profile is up to date, accurate, and showcases your skills and experience. No spelling errors, a professional-looking photo, and a short summary about yourself will show that you’re serious about finding a good position. LinkedIn acts as your online resume and allows you to present your best professional face to potential recruiters . Unlike Facebook, it’s perfectly acceptable to connect with people you don’t know personally if their experience is relevant to your own.

Secondly, monitor news in your scientific field. Which academic lab has funding, who raised startup capital, which company has just decided to focus on a drug or product highly relevant to your expertise? A physical presence in the USA could be helpful if you are able to line up contacts to visit while you’re there, but without any job leads it’s a long and probably expensive trip to simply go door knocking.

Online job postings are helpful but don’t be discouraged if you apply and hear nothing back. If you see jobs that don’t quite match your skills but are in your area of interest, try contacting the advertiser to see if they have any other potential positions. This is particularly true for industry jobs, where a company may be hiring multiple people to develop an existing team or project. If the job has been posted by a recruitment agency, the recruiter may be involved in hiring for other companies with similar positions.

If you’re able to connect with a potential employer and secure a job interview, that’s great! If you’re not already in the US, a phone interview is the most common first step. Make sure you are well prepared by taking the time to research the company or institution and the kind of work they do. Always think of several (intelligent) questions to ask your interviewer , as many of your questions will be answered during the interview. If you are being asked to use an app you’re not familiar with (Zoom, Skype, BlueJeans, etc.), make sure you install it on your computer ahead of time and know how to use it.

I’ve recently had an insight into the recruiting process at a small-to-medium size biotech company. If you get an interview, the company or lab is probably already satisfied that you can perform the techniques required for the position (unless you lied on your resume – please do not lie on your resume). The most important considerations are teamwork, integrity, a great attitude and being able to adapt . You may well be asked ‘situational’ questions and it’s great to practice these for any stage of your job search. Don’t just present your skills and experience like a shopping list, give examples: when did you demonstrate teamwork? In what situation did you demonstrate grace under pressure? Don’t be afraid to sell yourself, and practice until you’re able to fluently describe yourself both on paper and in person as a fantastic potential member of a team, not a pipetting machine.

If you are offered a position in the USA, congratulations! However, there are a few more things you need to consider before going ahead.

It’s OK to negotiate when you receive your offer letter. If your new position is in industry, it’s almost expected. An academic salary may be dictated by grant funding or University regulations but that doesn’t mean negotiating is out of the question.

For an industry job, check Glassdoor or other resources to see the average salary for similar positions. Keep in mind that the salaries also reflect the high cost of living in areas such as Boston or San Francisco!

You may be offered a relocation bonus if you’re coming from far away. If you’re not offered relocation expenses, ask if this is possible to help cover the costs of moving to a new country.

When investigating job opportunities or attending interviews, it is acceptable to enter the USA on a visitor visa or ESTA waiver program. However, make sure you have booked your travel to leave the USA and have this information ready if it’s requested when you arrive. Don’t book a one-way ticket into the US unless you have proof (i.e., a visa) of ongoing employment. You may not start work until you exit the USA and obtain a visa and you can’t transition from visitor status to a work visa while inside the USA. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) takes these laws extremely seriously – never perform any work, paid or otherwise, unless you have the appropriate visa.

If you’re not a US citizen, you’ll need a work visa. Generally speaking, you need at least a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field to qualify for a work visa in a scientific setting. Relevant field means directly related to the job you’re applying for – a degree in Business is not sufficient for a position in Neuroscience. Most life sciences institutions or companies, except for small startups, will be experienced in this process and most have their own lawyers to deal with visa applications. Even so, it’s a good idea to have some background information on the visa process.

Keep in mind that the visa process will take some time. A company or university can sometimes apply for premium processing when petitioning the US government for your visa, which will expedite your visa application for an additional fee. However, completing paperwork, scheduling interviews at the US consulate in your home country, and waiting for your completed passport may take weeks or even months.

You need to bring plenty of enthusiasm and flexibility to the table when dealing with recruiters or potential employers. Hiring a foreign national means extra expense and paperwork. Depending on the visa, there may be significant costs to the university or company. Keep in mind that it is illegal for your potential employer to ask you to pay visa filing fees! Both you and your employer will be in breach of the law if you do this, so never deal with any employer that asks you to cover filing fees in any way or implies that your salary will be reduced to compensate. I have been audited by Homeland Security while working as a postdoc and this is the first question I was asked.

It’s also a good idea to consider where in the USA you would be living. The biggest and busiest areas in life science industry are Cambridge, Massachusetts, the California Bay Area, and Seattle. Smaller but still important areas include San Diego, Los Angeles, and various major cities in Texas. Keep in mind that these are some of the most expensive cities to live in the world. As much as postdocs often survive on small stipends, foreign nationals are required to prove that they will have enough money to live on during their stay. If you apply for a visa with an offer for a job that pays very poorly and no existing savings or funds, USCIS may not be convinced that you can support yourself. If you are bringing family with you (husband or wife, US immigration does not recognize unmarried partners), they may be able to work in the USA but obtaining work authorization can take many months.

To conclude, the USA offers fantastic opportunities for scientific job-seekers and living on the other side of the world is not necessarily a barrier to securing a job. Keep in mind some important points:

  • Learn how to sell yourself. In general, Americans are very happy to hear about your accomplishments and it’s not seen as poor taste unless you overinflate your abilities or bend the truth!
  • Many jobs are never advertised – don’t be afraid to politely approach recruiters, companies or institutions if you feel there could be opportunities
  • Without US citizenship, you will require a work visa. Be aware that this process may take time, and never break the rules

With determination and a little bit of luck, you might just find your dream job stateside.

US Visa Options For Professors And Researchers:

J-1 visa, h-1b visa, o-1 visa, tn visa, introduction.

Foreign professors and researchers coming into the U.S. have expanded the community of science and technology specialists, bringing with them new and innovative ideas. They have not only assisted their employers, but their contributions in the national interest of the United States have been immeasurable.

The challenge for professors and researchers and the institutions that employ them lies in selecting the appropriate pathway to bring and retain these individuals in the U.S. We present here an overview of some of the most commonly used nonimmigrant US visa options for professors and researchers.

A. The J-1 Visa

The J-1 visa category encompasses a wide range of foreign national exchange visitors, including, but not limited to, professors, research scholars and teachers who are coming to the U.S. as a participant in a designated exchange program for a specific purpose, which includes research, teaching, instructing and/or lecturing.

B. The Professor And Research Scholar J-1: Who’s Eligible?

There are two J-1 categories that cover Professors and Researchers:

J-1 Professor: An individual engaged primarily in teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting at post-secondary accredited educational institutions, museums, libraries, or similar types of institutions. J-1 professors may perform research unless it is not allowed by the sponsor.

J-1 Research Scholar: An individual primarily conducting research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project at research institutions, corporate research facilities, museums, libraries, post-secondary accredited educational institutions, or similar types of institutions. J-1 Research Scholars may teach unless it is not allowed by the sponsor.

C. Period of Admission And Dependents

J-1 Professors and Research Scholars can extend their J-1 status for up to 5 years. Additionally, they cannot participate in the J-1 Professor or Research Scholar program again for at least 24 months once completing the 5 years.

The spouse and children under 21 of J-1 visa holders are eligible for the J-2 visa. The J-2 spouse is eligible for work authorization upon receiving the employment authorization document. The J-2 spouse must certify, however, that he or she is not obtaining the EAD in order to financially support the J-1 spouse.

D. J-1 Two-Year Home Country Residence Requirement And Waivers

Professors and researchers who enter the U.S. in, or change their status to J-1 status may be subject to the two-year foreign residence requirement. If subject to the two-year home residence requirement, they are ineligible to change their status in the U.S. to legal permanent resident or to any other nonimmigrant status or obtain an H, L or immigrant visa at a U.S. consulate abroad until they have returned to their home country or country of last residence and spent 2 years there.

J-1 professors and researchers may apply for a waiver of the two-year foreign residence requirement if they wish to remain in the United States beyond the end date of their program and change status to that of legal permanent resident or another nonimmigrant visa category or to return to the U.S. before the completion of the 2 years abroad.

E. H-1B Visa

The H-1B visa program is utilized by U.S. employers (including many University and research institutions) to employ professionals, including professors and researchers, in specialty occupations. A specialty occupation requires theoretical and practical application of a body of specialized knowledge and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in the specific specialty.

F. The H-1B For Professors And Researchers: Who’s Eligible?

In order to be eligible to see an H-1B Visa as a Professor or Researcher, the following important conditions must be met:

  • The employer must be able to show that the position requires an individual with at least a Bachelor’s degree in a specific field
  • The foreign nationals must possess the required degree or its equivalent

The vast majority of professors and researchers meet the minimum requirements of the H-1B because a Bachelor’s degree, if not a Master’s degree, is generally the minimum requirement for entry into these fields.

G. Period of Admission And Dependents

H-1B workers are admitted to the United States for an initial period of up to three years, which may be extended for an additional three years. A foreign worker can be in H-1B status for a maximum continuous period of six years.

The spouse and children under 21 of H-1B visa holders are eligible for the H-4 visa. Those in H-4 status generally are unable to work , except in very narrow circumstances.

H. The H-1B Cap And Lottery

There is an annual 65,000 numerical cap for H1Bs known as the “H1B cap”. When submitting the application, the employer must be sure that the cap is still open, i.e., the numerical limit has not been reached for the present fiscal year. During the last few years, the H-1B Cap was reached within the first week and USCIS had to run the H-1B Lottery .

However, there is a very important exemption to the H-1B Cap that benefits many professors and researchers – the foreign national may be exempt from the H1B Cap if the foreign national will be employed at:

1. an institution of higher education or a related or affiliated nonprofit entity or

2. a nonprofit or governmental research organization.

This important exemption allows most professors and many researchers to take advantage of the H-1B visa category.

Learn more about H-1B visa and how you could benefit from it.

DID YOU KNOW? The major disadvantage of the H-1B is the 6 year maximum limit. In order to overcome this limit, the process to obtain legal permanent residence should ideally be started by the time the foreign national reaches 4th year of H-1B.

I. O-1 Visa

The O-1 visa category allows foreign nationals with “extraordinary ability” in the sciences, education, business, athletics, the arts, motion picture or television to come to the U.S. to engage in official activity related to their field of endeavor.

The eligible foreign national must have sustained national or international acclaim. Extraordinary ability in science, education, business or athletics means a level of expertise indicating that the person is one of the small percentage who have risen to the very top of the field of endeavor. Extraordinary ability in the arts means “distinction” or a degree of skill and recognition substantially above that ordinarily encountered to the extent that a person described as prominent is renowned, leading, or well-known in the field of arts.

J. The O-1 Visa For Professors And Researchers: Who’s Eligible?

Professors and researchers generally must meet the evidentiary criteria for “extraordinary ability” in science or education. To be eligible, the foreign national must have:

1. Received a major, internationally recognized award, such as the Nobel Prize; or

2. At least three of the following forms of documentation:

a. Documentation of the alien’s receipt of nationally or internationally recognized prizes or awards for excellence in the field of endeavor;

b. Documentation of the alien’s membership in associations in the field for which classification is sought, which require outstanding achievements of their members, as judged by recognized national or international experts in their disciplines or fields;

c. Published material in professional or major trade publications or major media about the alien, relating to the alien’s work in the field for which classification is sought, which shall include the title, date, and author of such published material, and any necessary translation;

d. Evidence of the alien’s participation on a panel, or individually, as a judge of the work of others in the same or in an allied field of specialization to that for which classification is sought;

e. Evidence of the alien’s original scientific, scholarly, or business-related contributions of major significance in the field;

f. Evidence of the alien’s authorship of scholarly articles in the field, in professional journals, or other major media;

g. Evidence that the alien has been employed in a critical or essential capacity for organizations and establishments that have a distinguished reputation;

h. Evidence that the alien has either commanded a high salary or will command a high salary or other remuneration for services, evidenced by contracts or other reliable evidence.

If the criteria does not readily apply to the beneficiary’s occupation, the petitioner may submit any comparable evidence in order to establish the beneficiary’s eligibility.

K. Period of Admission And Dependents

A petition for O-1 status can be approved for an initial period of up to 3 years, or the time necessary to accomplish the event or activity. O-1 status can be extended in one year increments if it is for the same event. If the petition is for a different position with the same employer or for a new employer it is considered a new “event” and the petition can be granted for another three years. The O-1 can be extended indefinitely.

The spouse and children under 21 of O-1 visa holders are entitled to the O-3 visa, and they are not authorized to work in the U.S.

Learn more about O-1 visa and how you could benefit from it.

DID YOU KNOW? The O-1 is a great option for Professors and Researchers who have participated in the J-1 program and are now subject to the 2-year home residence requirement. Those who are subject to the home residence requirement and have not obtained a waiver or have not completed the requirement can obtain an O-1 visa to work in the U.S.

The TN nonimmigrant visa is available to citizens of Canada or Mexico to be employed in professional positions in the U.S. as a result of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). College/University and Seminary Teachers and Professors are eligible for the TN as are researchers in a variety of scientific and technical fields.

M. The TN For Professors And Researchers: Who’s Eligible?

Professors and researchers from Canada or Mexico may work in the U.S. under the following conditions:

  • Applicant is a citizen of Canada or Mexico
  • Profession is on the NAFTA list
  • Position in the U.S. requires a NAFTA professional
  • Mexican or Canadian applicant must work in a full-time or part-time job for a U.S. employer (self-employment is not permitted)
  • Canadian or Mexican citizen meets the minimum qualifications for the position

Most, if not all the listed professions for which one would qualify as a Professor or Researcher requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s or Licenciatura Degree. If a baccalaureate is required, experience cannot be substituted for that degree. Some occupations have alternate criteria to a bachelor’s degree, whilst some other occupations require experience in addition to the degree.

TN status for Mexican or Canadian citizens can be obtained fairly quickly, but cannot be used for tenured or tenure-track professors or physicians that are engaged primarily in the direct treatment of patients.

N. Period of Admission And Dependents

The maximum period of admission into the U.S is three years and extensions can be granted in 3 year increments. The TN can be extended indefinitely. However, those applying for the TN must able to show that they continue to have nonimmigrant intent.

The spouse and children under 21 of those in TN Status are eligible for the TD visa. TD visa holders are not authorized to work in the U.S.

Learn more about TN visa and how you could benefit from it.

DID YOU KNOW? The H-1B1 and the E-3 are 2 other visa categories created specifically pursuant to free trade agreements between the U.S. and other countries. The H-1B1 is specifically for citizens of Chile and Singapore and the E-3 is specifically for citizens of Australia. Both are great options for Professors and Researchers.

Foreign national professors and researchers have several viable options to be able to come to the U.S., and must weigh all the options before deciding on the visa to pursue.

IMGSide

Your Roadmap to a Medical Career in the USA

How to unlock research opportunities as an international Medical Graduate

Research experience and publications are important for keeping international medical graduates worldwide up-to-date and helping them give the best care possible.

During the USMLE journey, IMGs are confronted with the question of their research and publishing experience.

As the residency match gets more competitive each year, research experiences and published work can considerably boost one’s residency application.

However, many IMGs are unfamiliar with the processes of conducting research and getting a paper published.

There are, of course, numerous paths to doing research and getting published, including applying for research positions in the US.

However, as it’s only an option for some IMGs, I’d like to share alternative research and publication methods.

Interested?

Let’s dive in!

research jobs in usa for foreigners

Research experience VS individual research

First, it’s crucial to distinguish between research and publication.

What I mean by that is, only some research results in publication and only some publications count as the result of research experience on a resume.

So, what is the difference, and why does it count?

Research experience:

Research experience is any professional or academic research done while working for an institution.

In other words, it implies that you hold or were holding a position in an establishment.

Besides potentially publishing the results of your work, research experience has many advantages, including the following:

  • You’ll benefit from the guidance and experience of mentors and fellows, which is especially helpful if you have no experience with research and publishing.
  • Positive impact on a resume and ERAS application, regardless of whether or not the research resulted in publication.
  • Opportunities to make connections.

Depending on whether it’s funded research or unfunded research, the flip sides of both research experiences are that:

  • Unfunded research proposes only unpaid positions. Therefore, you’ll have to sustain yourself financially throughout the research experience.
  • Funded research offers paid positions. However, there are fewer positions for a large pool of applicants, and it usually requires applicants to have previous research experience and a solid resume to be considered.

What are the remaining options for IMGs who cannot sustain themselves financially to apply for unfunded research and do not have enough research experience to apply for funded research?

One answer to this question is – Individual Research!

Individual research:

So, what do we mean by individual research?

Individual research can be conducted without working with an institution and results in the publication of an article.

Individual research won’t be considered as research experience; however, it’s a good compromise for IMGs and an excellent opportunity to acquire the skills to conduct research and get more familiar with the process of getting published.

So, what are the key elements of conducting individual research?

Which study type best fits individual research?

As you won’t hold a position in an institution, you won’t have access to a laboratory or direct access to patients to conduct the study.

Therefore, the most straightforward way to run individual research is to work on existing data, which results in either conducting a Systematic Review or a Meta-Analysis.

The systematic review:

A systematic review involves the collecting, critical assessment, and synthesis of previous research on a particular topic.

The meta-analysis:

A meta-analysis is a systematic scientific approach that, using a repeatable process, combines the findings of numerous independent investigations on a specific issue. It’s a statistical synthesis of the research that was a part of a systematic review. By analyzing many cases and reaching a general conclusion, meta-analysis enables a more accurate interpretation of the data.

Here are some links that will guide you in the process of conducting a meta-analysis or a systematic review:

  • A Meta-Analytic Methodology Guide from frontiersin.org
  • A very interesting article on how to run a systematic review from ncbi

From topic selection to publication

Once you have decided which type of study you want to conduct, it’s time to start taking concrete actions.

So, where do you start?

Select a subject

This step is crucial and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Taking the time to select the appropriate topic is vital. You don’t want to invest time and effort into something only to realize halfway through that your chosen topic is irrelevant and unfeasible.

So, what is a good subject?

Ideally, the topic you decide to investigate should revolve around an interest of yours. For example, if you are interested in dermatology, look for a subject in that field.

Also, writing articles in the field you want to work in will help your application significantly.

Once you have defined the field you want to research, you’ll have to clarify the research question, which is, in my experience, the trickiest part!

To determine the research question, you must first go through what’s already been done and what new questions the researchers have brought to light.

Reading the trending articles in Pubmed or highly-accessed journals can help you in this step and familiarize you with how research is conducted, how results are presented, how a paper is written, and so on.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to doctors or medical residents in your home country or elsewhere to ask about what subject they think is worth investigating.

I recommend you use the PICO method to formulate a research question.

What are the steps to publish a paper?

Form a team:.

Although we’re talking about “individual”  research, publishing a paper is a result of collective work.

As you determine the tasks that need to be accomplished to achieve the goals of your study, you can start reaching out to individuals who possess the necessary skills and establish clear roles and responsibilities for each team member, as well as a system for communication and collaboration.

With your team, you’ll have to complete the following steps:

Conduct a literature review:

Conducting a literature review will allow you to highlight what’s already been established and documented, and confront the study you’re conducting with the previous one.

Define the design of the study:

Your research design is like your house’s foundation: Essential.

Study design refers to the methods used to collect and analyze the data and ultimately represent the quality of your work.

Collect the data and do a statistical analysis:

The data correspond to the articles selected to be integrated into your systematic review and meta-analysis.

Once you have collected all the data, you will have to do a statistical analysis of the results.

Although you can task a statistician to do the statistical analysis, I highly recommend you learn and do it yourself as you will acquire a new valuable skill and get a better ,broader perspective of the study you are conducting.

You can find courses on Coursera or Udemy .

While writing, pay special attention to the following:

  • Vocabulary and grammatical errors

Do not hesitate to ask mentors or fellows to proofread your work, or use professional tools to assist your writing, such as Grammarly.

But remember that it’s not enough to proofread with this kind of tool. It’s better to seek assistance from a professional proofreader who’s a native English speaker. Feel free to contact us as we work with several native writers.

Identify a journal

The final step of your publication journey is to identify a journal where you want your work to be published.

However, don’t be too quick to shout victory, as this step can be daunting.

Once you’ve identified a list of potential journals, I recommend you read their specific guidelines to ensure your research fits within the journal’s scope before submitting your work.

Keep in mind that some journals have a longer turnaround than others and that the process can take many months. With that in mind, choose a journal that aligns with your timeline for publication.

How to make it to the next level

Besides maximizing your chances of getting matched with your dream specialty, getting published is a unique opportunity to learn, acquire new skills, and make new connections.

As you define a study question worth investigating, use it as an opportunity to contact doctors who have conducted studies on a related topic and, if possible, suggest a collaboration.

Email the institution you want to apply to with your project study, motivations, goals, and an attached resume.

Again, this is not just about getting published to put it on ERAS, but rather a chance to start taking action and building a network.

Besides good scores and US clinical experience, research and publications have become much more important in the matching process.

Since getting a research position might not always be an accessible option for all IMGs, individual research represents an excellent compromise to get started in research and publishing.

Selecting the appropriate subject and acquiring the necessary skills to publish your first piece of work is key in the USMLE journey. It will help you match

with your dream specialty, and it also presents a unique opportunity to start reaching out to hospitals and making new connections.

Jobs in the United States

The U.S. has always been known as “the land of opportunity.” This may be a bit of a cliché, but in many ways it is still true. Workers come to find jobs in the U.S. to improve their skills, their education level, and to build a new life. Working abroad in the U.S. is also a wonderful way for students to spend a summer abroad or spend a gap year. There are ample opportunities for part-time or seasonal jobs in the United States, and working in the U.S. gives individuals time to explore the country, while supplementing travel expenses and gaining international work experience.

Washington D.C. You can find many opportunities for jobs in the United States in the nation’s capital. Beyond being the hub for all things politics, Washington D.C. is a wonderful place to live. With access to national monuments, hip restaurants, and some major universities including Georgetown, George Washington University, and American University, you’ll have plenty to do in your free time from while working in Washington D.C..

Seattle, Washington gets high marks for combining economic opportunity with livability, provided you don’t mind the rain. Many people relocate to Seattle for its vibe—hip and artsy. Seattle is also home to Internet retailer Amazon and cutting edge coffee technology, Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, and Tully's were all founded or are based in Seattle. So jobs in Seattle offer many possibilities.

Raleigh, North Carolina . Over the past few years, Raleigh has consistently been ranked as one of the top places to begin a business or pursue a business career. The cost of doing business in the area is low, and the region is growing steadily. The technology, healthcare, and education industries are key employers. The city is part of the North Carolina's Research Triangle, one of the largest and most diverse concentrations of cutting-edge start-ups and research centers, especially in the field of biotechnology. You’ll find bounds of opportunities for jobs in Raleigh.

A little more than 15 percent of the U.S. labor market is filled by foreign-born workers, and most of those jobs fall at either end of the job spectrum—high skilled and technical, and physically demanding. The more fluent you are in English and the higher your education level, the better your chance of working abroad in the U.S. in a higher-paying position.

Healthcare . Healthcare jobs in the U.S. encompass a wide range of required training and projected salaries (which are typically on the higher side). Job titles such as personal care aide, registered nurse, and physician’s assistant are the most popular and are in the highest demand.

Retail Sales. Retail sales work abroad in the USA is one of the most fluid and easily attainable jobs—however, these positions are not particularly high paying. Retail jobs in the U.S. can be a career stepping stone, and shifts are generally flexible enough so the job can be fit around other responsibilities (such as family needs or school).

Computer & Information Technology . This is one of the most rapidly expanding and changing industries in the U.S. and worldwide. IT or computer jobs in the United States range from computer programmers and computer support specialists to web designers and software developers. Most jobs abroad in the USA require at least a two-year technical degree or a bachelor’s degree. Starting salaries (depending on the position) are typically quite high, and jobs provide enough room for advancement and salary increases.

Salaries for working in the United States vary widely by geographic region and by whether the setting is rural or in a major metropolitan area. Education and age matters when it comes to pay scales. Typically, those with a bachelor’s degree will earn nearly three times as much as those with only high school degrees. Each state has a different set minimum wage, and hospitality or restaurant jobs may be lower due to earning tips. Federal minimum wage is tough to live on comfortably no matter what part of the country you live in.

Housing is generally plentiful and affordable for workers who fall in the high skill range, and often housing is subsidized or arranged by employers, particularly if the employer is an academic, research, or high-tech organization. Sharing an apartment with roommates is the best way to cut costs while living comfortably. Seasonal workers typically have more of a challenge as they are generally at the bottom of the pay scale.

Visas to work abroad in the USA vary according to the job and skill level. One of the most issued, most coveted, and the most highly-compensated is the H1B, given to workers with specific in-demand skills, such as computer systems and software engineers, software developers, electronic engineers, researchers, and medical specialists. These are issued for three years, with an option to renew, and an option to convert to permanent resident status. Seasonal agriculture and non-agricultural workers can be issued a one-year visa that can be renewed for three years.

Employers must get certification for the jobs offered, and employees must verify their immigration status. Up-to-date information on visa types, regulations, and the application process is available through the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, or U.S. Embassy offices.

Working abroad, especially working abroad in the United States, can open many doors. You will have opportunities to learn and grow personally, while working in a fast paced world. Some jobs in the U.S. will allow for movement and long-term opportunities, while other may be more temporary. Regardless, the skills you gain and the lessons you learn while working in the U.S. will help you in your future career no matter if you stay in your position in the United States, or if you look to go back home—or elsewhere around the world!

Working abroad in the United States can bring you ample opportunities, but it is not all apple pie and picnics. The work environment, almost at any level, can be challenging. While working in the U.S., you may find that employers do not prioritize a strong work/life balance. Competition for jobs in the United States, especially in high-paying industries or major cities, is stiff. Whether it’s a summer job in the U.S., an internship, career enhancement, or a permanent move you’re looking for, your move will take research and preparation. So research away and let us help you find your perfect position.
