Essential Readings on Political Islam (by Peter Mandaville)

As befits a topic that is global in scope, increasingly controversial in nature, and the focus of academic inquiry for more than half a century, the literature on political Islam is voluminous. The readings presented here represent some of the most important efforts to study contemporary Islamism using the tools, methodologies, and academic rigor associated with the humanities and social sciences. Though hardly exhaustive, this list will provide the reader with a sense of how the study of political Islam—in major publications either written or available in English—as an object of academic inquiry has evolved over the years.

Salman Nadwi

Journal of Islamic and Religious Studies (JIRS)

Colonialism has impacted on Islamic Law as well as Islamic civilization. Islam has a dissonant relationship with modernity in that it agrees with central aspects of this epochal phenomenon and parts ways with others. The compatibility issues were raised by the Muslim thinkers. Many Muslim scholars have contributed to give an original understanding of message of Islam detached from sectarian influences. Traditions are considered to be the vehicle for the transference of factors to modernity with a strong role in determining power and culture of a civilization. Thus, they pave the way for the power tools of a civilization. The theories of Muslim scholars from Asia and Egypt are discussed to elaborate the Muslim understanding of facing the challenges of modernity. The contemporary scholars' views are also added with an analysis of their observation on compatibility of Islam with modern era challenges and the criticism on it due to their modernity conception. Colonialism and Islamic Law Colonialism had a significant influence on Islamic Law in the sense that it did brought up a new face of law for the Muslims residing in different parts of the world. 1 It was, no doubt, the rule of colonizers and they tried to impose their laws and culture in the colonized lands but were met with resistance and this resistance forced them to ponder about finding the middle path between their laws and Islamic law. The middle path was in fact an effort to come to terms between the colonizers and the colonized ones. Though their intention was still the same i.e. to rule the lands but it could not have been possible if they had been rigid in implementation of their own laws. So flexibility was the only option left for them to exercise. 2

Proceedings of the International Symposium on Religious Literature and Heritage (ISLAGE 2021)

Imroatul Ngarifah

Harun Yahya Books

Adnan Oktar (Harun Yahya) The superstitious Far Eastern religions are a mystery to most. When superstitious faiths like Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Shinto, Confucianism and Taoism are mentioned, people tend to think of religious communities who worship or pray to idols carved out of stone or wood, make offerings to and put on shows of seeming respect for them and perform mysterious ceremonies in dimly lit temples. Whereas Divine and monotheistic religions like Islam, Christianity and Judaism (–the original state of Christianity and Judaism is referred to here as they have been tampered with and altered since their revelation—) are based on revelation and call humanity to an enlightened, happy, safe and just life. The superstitious Eastern religions with their 1.5 billion believers1 worldwide, represent a gloomy life filled with pagan rituals, social injustices and miserable conditions, that is to say, a warped life. The most fundamental mistake of the believers in these superstitious faiths is that they deny the certainty of Allah’s existence (Allah is beyond that) and put their faith into hundreds of millions of idols, perversely worshipping them and ignorantly hoping for help and salvation from them. The majority of Asian people believe in pagan religions like Hinduism and Buddhism. Buddhists prostrate before Buddha idols, making supplications and offerings to them, and Hindus worship literally millions of different idols. The irrationality and perversion of believing in the power of stone idols, of believing that such idols have the power to punish or reward, of respecting or fearing them is self-evident. Even worse, Hinduism demands reverence to cows, apes, mice, trees, rivers etc., which leads to even greater spiritual perversion, ignorance and darkness.

Armando Salvatore

Quote as: Salvatore, Armando. 2009. “Tradition and Modernity within Islamic Civilisation and the West,” in Islam and Modernity: Key Issues and Debates, ed. Muhammad Khalid Masud, Armando Salvatore and Martin van Bruinessen, Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 3-35. A major assumption running through the social-science literature, from the founding fathers onwards, has been that modernity occurred only once, in the West, because of specific conditions that did not exist in other civilisations. The latter, including Islam, were implicitly characterised by the absence of one or more crucial features. According to this approach, non-Western civilisations could at best achieve modernity through its introduction from outside. More recent theoretical work has questioned both this assumption of the uniqueness of the West and the corresponding conception of modernity as singular. Informed by these theoretical advances, this chapter takes a new look at modernity and at what precedes it or inhibits its emergence: tradition or traditions. The latter have often been considered, from the viewpoint of Western modernity, as little more than remnants of earlier societies and cultures, which would have to be either absorbed or destroyed in the course of modernisation. In this perspective, the relation between Islam and modernity can be only one of deficiencies (measured by Islam’s alleged insufficient capacity to supersede traditions), dependencies (on Western modernity) and idiosyncracies (in terms of distorted outcomes of a dependent modernisation). Questions such as What Went Wrong? with Islamic civilisation vis-à-vis the modern world hegemonised by the West inevitably come up as a result of static and unilateral views of tradition and modernity and their relations. The attempt to overcome an approach dominated by the measurement of deficiencies, dependencies and idiosyncracies is aided by a conception of civilisations as unique constellations of culture and power, in which a tradition is the dynamic cultural dimension of a civilisation. This definition helps overcoming Eurocentrism and allows us to conceive of different pathways to modernity in the form of multiple modernities. Facilitated by the findings of historians and social scientists who have demonstrated the dynamism of Islamic civilisation well into the modern era, the chapter points out the distinctive factors of strength of Islamic civilisation, alongside features that in the historical process turned out to be weaknesses vis-à-vis the encroaching West. Its (relative) strength consisted in more inclusive patterns of trans-civilisational encounters and networking, and its (relative) weakness lay in a limited capacity to enable the autonomy of the political process vis-à-vis traditional authorities, and as a corollary to legitimize the unlimited sovereignty of the modern state.

Tuğba Türkoğlu

" Civilization is a universal culture that embodied many other cultures and peoples within itself. " As we understand from the definition of the term, the concept of universalism is one of the building stones in the characterization of the civilizations. Surely, there are many elements of civilizations, but some of them are playing more crucial role than the others in the aspect of making the civilizations universal. I would argue that as far as Islam is concerned, religion is the most influential and distinguished one in transforming the people from their own localities to the universally shared cults without totally eliminating all the aspects of their local cultures. In this paper, I want to focus on the role of religion of Islam as an effective universalizing factor of the Islamic civilization through specifically examining the universal religious elements within. These elements simply can be gathered under the title of the sameness; the same leader, the same law, the same identity and the worldview which have been shared by the whole ummah for centuries.
