Describing Ryerson’s Creative School Programs in a Sentence (or Two)

The Creative School at Ryerson University is home to many (15 to be exact) cool and unique programs. Creativity is at the heart of innovation , driving insights and learning, and expanding what’s possible. By joining one of our programs, you’ll access transdisciplinary learning opportunities like no other place where you’ll co-create and collaborate with students from across the faculty and the university, as well as students from our array of international partners around the world.

To learn more about these programs, check out our programs described in one or two sentences by a current Creative Industries student, Jenna.

Creative industries

I think the best way to describe Creative Industries is that it is a combination of business and creative classes that allows students to learn how to work behind the scenes in a variety of creative industries, from music to film to journalism.

Graphic communications management

The Graphic Communications Management program is the only program in Canada that provides a degree in the printing industries . If you want to learn how to complete many creative projects from beginning to end, develop new skills in creativity, design, technology, innovation, business, and entrepreneurship, as well as get real-world experience with internships and labs, then this program might be for you.

Image arts: film studies

Film Studies is one of two programs from the School of Image Arts , which has been listed as one of MovieMaker’s top 40 best film schools in the U.S. & Canada 2021 for “outstanding documentary training”. This program allows students to gain experience in many aspects of filmmaking including writing, directing, and producing, while learning theory about film and film history with the opportunity for an internship.

Image arts: photography studies

Earlier in 2021, I did an interview with Samantha , a now-graduated Photography Studies student. The program is a combination of theory and hands-on experiences , and she described it as, “broad enough that you have the opportunity to go in whatever direction you want to, but it’s specific enough to photography that it’s not like other programs that are maybe more focused on visual arts as a whole.”

Interior design

Our Interior Design program is one of AZURE magazine’s top-ranked interior design schools in the world . The combination of theory and practice allows students to build their knowledge, explore their creativity, and test out their skills in real-world situations .

Second-year Journalism student Sonia describes her program as, “a whirlwind of emotions. You are placed right into the action from day one and are guided by your peers and industry professionals who support and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. The best part is being taught transferable skills, so you aren’t limited to just one thing.”

RTA school of media: media production

Third-year Media Production student Geneva says, “the media production program allows students to choose their own paths from audio, film, and tv, digital media and more, providing us with the best tools when entering the industry .” Fun fact: the RTA School of Media was named one of the 20 best international film schools of 2021 by the Hollywood Reporter!

RTA school of media: new media

I truly think that New Media might be one of our university’s most unique programs. New Media allows students to shape their creativity through different mediums including robotics, art installations, and videos while also learning about media theory and production. It seems like it really has it all.

RTA school of media: sport media

The Sport Media program is the first of its kind in North America. This super-cool program focuses on media entertainment within the sports industry , and students learn unique skills such as sports journalism, sport entertainment management, and on-air hosting.

Performance: acting

The Acting program is one of three programs in the School of Performance. It’s a conservatory program where students identify and develop skills throughout their four years with lots of hands-on learning. Check out an interview with Jenn , a third year Acting student, who explains this program in detail.

Performance: dance

Performance: production & design, professional communication.

Carly, a fourth-year Professional Communication student said that this program “allows you to define strong messaging with social context and your audience in mind, while taking an intersectional approach to both theoretical and practical applications.”

Professional music

The Professional Music program is the Creative School’s newest addition with its first cohort of students admitted in Fall 2021. If you see yourself pursuing a career in the music industry, this program will help you get there. Students learn business skills to help succeed in the industry and are also able to develop their own creativity while in the program.

Life Writing Project

In 2013, our faculty and students begin working with United Active Living and the Garrison Green Seniors Residence to create the Life Writing Project. During our wonderful partnership, many of the interested seniors at Garrison Green were published several times throughout the series. This unique opportunity brought accomplished creative writing students together with senior citizens in a semester-long series of interviews that culminate in an anthology of published work.

In 2019, the Immigrant Services Calgary reached contacted one of our faculty members to teach "Creative Writing to Seniors" and this presented a new opportunity to design a different approach to the Life Writing Project.

A Colourful Life: A Collection of Poems and Stories by Immigrant Seniors , was the result. This anthology was a first for Immigrant Services Calgary and launched with great fanfare to a full house of seniors and community members and also, in attendance, was the Honourable Josephine Pon, Minister of Seniors and Housing with the Government of Alberta. You can check out the story  here.

This project has a curricular tie-in with our capstone course, "Experiential Studies in Creative Writing".

I feel very much enjoyable in this class. This will help us to connect others. At first, I feel shy but now I feel pleasure. At first I cannot speak English, now I can say something and understand language. I passed my days very pleasure. Every person is friendly to another. Writing class is very much helpful to me. It helps to write something and talking with others. Writing is good exercise of our brain. It helps us to work the brain. Brain is good, our health is good. Creative writing helps us to protect our brain. — Student, Community Initiatives for Immigrant Seniors Program (CISP)
