Secondary research is the analysis, summary or synthesis of already existing published research. Instead of collecting original data, as in primary research , secondary research involves data or the results of data analyses already collected.

They hold value for academic studies because they enable us to take stock of the existing knowledge in a field, evaluate it, and identify flaws or gaps in the existing literature. As a result, they’re almost universally used by academics prior to conducting primary research.

However, they identify several factors affecting the success of social media in the classroom, including: school culture, attitudes towards social media, and learning goals. The study’s value is that it organizes findings from a large corpus of existing research to help understand the topic more comprehensively.

2. Meta-Analyses

Meta-analyses are similar to literature reviews, but are at a larger scale and tend to involve the quantitative synthesis of data from multiple studies to identify trends and derive estimates of overall effect sizes.

For example, while a literature review might be a qualitative assessment of trends in the literature, a meta analysis would be a quantitative assessment, using statistical methods, of studies that meet specific inclusion criteria that can be directly compared and contrasted.

Often, meta-analysis aim to identify whether the existing data can provide an authoritative account for a hypothesis and whether it’s confirmed across the body of literature.

Example 6: Cholesterol and Alzheimer’s Disease Risk: A Meta-Meta-Analysis

This study examines the relationship between cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Researchers conducted a systematic search of meta-analyses and reviewed several databases, collecting 100 primary studies and five meta-analyses to analyze the connection between cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease. They find that the literature compellingly demonstrates that low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels significantly influence the development of Alzheimer’s disease, but high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TG) levels do not show significant effects. This is an example of secondary research because it compiles and analyzes data from multiple existing studies and meta-analyses rather than collecting new, original data.

Example 7: The power of feedback revisited: A meta-analysis of educational feedback research

They use a random-effects model to ascertain whether there is a clear effect size across the literature. The authors find that feedback tends to impact cognitive and motor skill outcomes but has less of an effect on motivational and behavioral outcomes. A key (albeit somewhat obvious) finding was that the manner in which the feedback is provided is a key factor in whether the feedback is effective.

Example 8: How Much Does Education Improve Intelligence? A Meta-Analysis

This study investigates the relationship between years of education and intelligence test scores. The researchers analyzed three types of quasiexperimental studies involving over 600,000 participants to understand if longer education increases intelligence or if more intelligent students simply complete more education. They found that an additional year of education consistently increased cognitive abilities by 1 to 5 IQ points across all broad categories of cognitive ability. The effects persisted throughout the participants’ lives, suggesting that education is an effective way to raise intelligence. This study is an example of secondary research because it compiles and analyzes data from multiple existing studies rather than gathering new, original data.

The analysis also revealed that individual and contextual factors better predicted the intention to recycle rather than the actual recycling behavior. The study offers theoretical and practical implications and suggests that future research should examine the effects of contextual factors and the interplay between individual and contextual factors.

Example 10: Stress management interventions for police officers and recruits

The meta-analysis systematically reviews randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies that explore the effects of stress management interventions on outcomes among police officers. It looked at 12 primary studies published between 1984 and 2008. Across the studies, there were a total of 906 participants. Interestingly, it found that the interventions were not effective. Here, we can see how secondary research is valuable sometimes for showing there is no clear trend or consensus in existing literature. The conclusions suggest a need for further research to develop and implement more effective interventions addressing specific stressors and using randomized controlled trials.

3. Textbooks

Academic textbooks tend not to present new research. Rather, they present key academic information in ways that are accessible to university students and academics.

As a result, we can consider textbooks to be secondary rather than primary research. They’re collections of information and research produced by other people, then re-packaged for a specific audience.

Textbooks tend to be written by experts in a topic. However, unlike literature reviews and meta-analyses, they are not necessarily systematic in nature and are not designed to progress current knowledge through identifying gaps, weaknesses, and strengths in the existing literature.

Like many textbooks, it brings together its own secondary research with user-friendly elements like exercises, activities, and hypothetical case studies in each chapter.

4. White Papers

White papers are typically produced within businesses and government departments rather than academic research environments.

Generally, a white paper will focus on a specific topic of concern to the institution in order to present a state of the current situation as well as opportunities that could be pursued for change, improvement, or profit generation in the future.

Unlike a literature review, a white paper generally doesn’t follow standards of academic rigor and may be presented with a bias toward, or focus on, a company or institution’s mission and values.

This white paper is an example of secondary research because it synthesizes and integrates information from multiple primary research sources, expert interviews, and input from an advisory committee of local and state transportation agencies.

5. Academic Essays

Students’ academic essays tend to present secondary rather than primary research. The student is expected to study current literature on a topic and use it to present a thesis statement.

Academic essays tend to require rigorous standards of analysis, critique, and evaluation, but do not require systematic investigation of a topic like you would expect in a literature review.

In an essay, a student may identify the most relevant or important data from a field of research in order to demonstrate their knowledge of a field of study. They may also, after demonstrating sufficient knowledge and understanding, present a thesis statement about the issue.

Secondary research involves data that has already been collected. The published research might be reviewed, included in a meta-analysis, or subjected to a re-analysis.

3.    Begin searching and collecting the existing data

Now that you have the list of data sources, start accessing the data and collect the information into an organized system. This may mean you start setting up research journal accounts or making telephone calls to book meetings with third-party research teams to verify the details around data results.

As you search and access information, remember to check the data’s date, the credibility of the source, the relevance of the material to your research topic, and the methodology used by the third-party researchers. Start small and as you gain results, investigate further in the areas that help your research’s aims.

4.    Combine the data and compare the results

When you have your data in one place, you need to understand, filter, order, and combine it intelligently. Data may come in different formats where some data could be unusable, while other information may need to be deleted.

After this, you can start to look at different data sets to see what they tell you. You may find that you need to compare the same datasets over different periods for changes over time or compare different datasets to notice overlaps or trends. 5.    Analyze your data and explore further

Primary vs secondary research

Unlike secondary research, primary research involves creating data first-hand by directly working with interviewees, target users, or a target market. Primary research focuses on the method for carrying out research, asking questions, and collecting data using approaches such as:

Secondary research

Secondary research uses research and data that has already been carried out. It is sometimes referred to as desk research. It is a good starting point for any type of research as it enables you to analyse what research has already been undertaken and identify any gaps. 

You may only need to carry out secondary research for your assessment or you may need to use secondary research as a starting point, before undertaking your own primary research .

Searching for both primary and secondary sources can help to ensure that you are up to date with what research has already been carried out in your area of interest and to identify the key researchers in the field.

"Secondary sources are the books, articles, papers and similar materials written or produced by others that help you to form your background understanding of the subject. You would use these to find out about experts’ findings, analyses or perspectives on the issue and decide whether to draw upon these explicitly in your research." (Cottrell, 2014, p. 123).

Examples of secondary research sources include:.

  • journal articles
  • official statistics, such as government reports or organisations which have collected and published data

Primary research  involves gathering data which has not been collected before. Methods to collect it can include interviews, focus groups, controlled trials and case studies. Secondary research often comments on and analyses this primary research.

Gopalakrishnan and Ganeshkumar (2013, p. 10) explain the difference between primary and secondary research:

"Primary research is collecting data directly from patients or population, while secondary research is the analysis of data already collected through primary research. A review is an article that summarizes a number of primary studies and may draw conclusions on the topic of interest which can be traditional (unsystematic) or systematic".

Secondary Data

As secondary data has already been collected by someone else for their research purposes, it may not cover all of the areas of interest for your research topic. This research will need to be analysed alongside other research sources and data in the same subject area in order to confirm, dispute or discuss the findings in a wider context.

"Secondary source data, as the name infers, provides second-hand information. The data come ‘pre-packaged’, their form and content reflecting the fact that they have been produced by someone other than the researcher and will not have been produced specifically for the purpose of the research project. The data, none the less, will have some relevance for the research in terms of the information they contain, and the task for the researcher is to extract that information and re-use it in the context of his/her own research project." (Denscombe, 2021, p. 268)

In the video below Dr. Benedict Wheeler (Senior Research Fellow at the European Center for Environment and Human Health at the University of Exeter Medical School) discusses secondary data analysis. Secondary data was used for his research on how the environment affects health and well-being and utilising this secondary data gave access to a larger data set.

As with all research, an important part of the process is to critically evaluate any sources you use. There are tools to help with this in the  Being Critical  section of the guide.

Louise Corti, from the UK Data Archive, discusses using secondary data  in the video below. T he importance of evaluating secondary research is discussed - this is to ensure the data is appropriate for your research and to investigate how the data was collected.

There are advantages and disadvantages to secondary research:

Advantages:

  • Usually low cost
  • Easily accessible
  • Provides background information to clarify / refine research areas
  • Increases breadth of knowledge
  • Shows different examples of research methods
  • Can highlight gaps in the research and potentially outline areas of difficulty
  • Can incorporate a wide range of data
  • Allows you to identify opposing views and supporting arguments for your research topic
  • Highlights the key researchers and work which is being undertaken within the subject area
  • Helps to put your research topic into perspective

Disadvantages

  • Can be out of date
  • Might be unreliable if it is not clear where or how the research has been collected - remember to think critically
  • May not be applicable to your specific research question as the aims will have had a different focus

Literature reviews 

Secondary research for your major project may take the form of a literature review . this is where you will outline the main research which has already been written on your topic. this might include theories and concepts connected with your topic and it should also look to see if there are any gaps in the research., as the criteria and guidance will differ for each school, it is important that you check the guidance which you have been given for your assessment. this may be in blackboard and you can also check with your supervisor..

Secondary research which goes beyond literature reviews

For some dissertations/major projects there might only be a literature review (discussed above ). For others there could be a literature review followed by primary research and for others the literature review might be followed by further secondary research. 

You may be asked to write a literature review which will form a background chapter to give context to your project and provide the necessary history for the research topic. However, you may then also be expected to produce the rest of your project using additional secondary research methods, which will need to produce results and findings which are distinct from the background chapter t o avoid repetition .

Remember, as the criteria and guidance will differ for each School, it is important that you check the guidance which you have been given for your assessment. This may be in Blackboard and you can also check with your supervisor.

Although this type of secondary research will go beyond a literature review, it will still rely on research which has already been undertaken. And,  "just as in primary research, secondary research designs can be either quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of both strategies of inquiry" (Manu and Akotia, 2021, p. 4) .

Your secondary research may use the literature review to focus on a specific theme, which is then discussed further in the main project. Or it may use an alternative approach. Some examples are included below.  Remember to speak with your supervisor if you are struggling to define these areas.

Some approaches of how to conduct secondary research include:

  • A systematic review is a structured literature review that involves identifying all of the relevant primary research using a rigorous search strategy to answer a focused research question.
  • This involves comprehensive searching which is used to identify themes or concepts across a number of relevant studies. 
  • The review will assess the q uality of the research and provide a summary and synthesis of all relevant available research on the topic.
  • The systematic review  LibGuide goes into more detail about this process (The guide is aimed a PhD/Researcher students. However, students on other levels of study may find parts of the guide helpful too).
  • Scoping reviews aim to identify and assess available research on a specific topic (which can include ongoing research). 
  • They are "particularly useful when a body of literature has not yet been comprehensively reviewed, or exhibits a complex or heterogeneous nature not amenable to a more precise systematic review of the evidence. While scoping reviews may be conducted to determine the value and probable scope of a full systematic review, they may also be undertaken as exercises in and of themselves to summarize and disseminate research findings, to identify research gaps, and to make recommendations for the future research."  (Peters et al., 2015) .
  • This is designed to  summarise the current knowledge and provide priorities for future research.
  • "A state-of-the-art review will often highlight new ideas or gaps in research with no official quality assessment." (Baguss, 2020) .
  • "Bibliometric analysis is a popular and rigorous method for exploring and analyzing large volumes of scientific data." (Donthu et al., 2021)
  • Quantitative methods and statistics are used to analyse the bibliographic data of published literature. This can be used to measure the impact of authors, publications, or topics within a subject area.

The bibliometric analysis often uses the data from a citation source such as Scopus or Web of Science .

  • This is a technique used to combine the statistic results of prior quantitative studies in order to increase precision and validity.
  • "It goes beyond the parameters of a literature review, which assesses existing literature, to actually perform calculations based on the results collated, thereby coming up with new results" (Curtis and Curtis, 2011, p. 220)

  • Grounded Theory is used to create explanatory theory from data which has been collected.
  • "Grounded theory data analysis strategies can be used with different types of data, including secondary data." ( Whiteside, Mills and McCalman, 2012 )
  • This allows you to use a specific theory or theories which can then be applied to your chosen topic/research area.
  • You could focus on one case study which is analysed in depth, or you could examine more than one in order to compare and contrast the important aspects of your research question.
  • "Good case studies often begin with a predicament that is poorly comprehended and is inadequately explained or traditionally rationalised by numerous conflicting accounts. Therefore, the aim is to comprehend an existent problem and to use the acquired understandings to develop new theoretical outlooks or explanations."  ( Papachroni and Lochrie, 2015, p. 81 )

Qualitative Secondary Analysis: A Case Exemplar

Qualitative secondary analysis (QSA) is the use of qualitative data collected by someone else or to answer a different research question. Secondary analysis of qualitative data provides an opportunity to maximize data utility particularly with difficult to reach patient populations. However, QSA methods require careful consideration and explicit description to best understand, contextualize, and evaluate the research results. In this paper, we describe methodologic considerations using a case exemplar to illustrate challenges specific to QSA and strategies to overcome them.

Health care research requires significant time and resources. Secondary analysis of existing data provides an efficient alternative to collecting data from new groups or the same subjects. Secondary analysis, defined as the reuse of existing data to investigate a different research question ( Heaton, 2004 ), has a similar purpose whether the data are quantitative or qualitative. Common goals include to (1) perform additional analyses on the original dataset, (2) analyze a subset of the original data, (3) apply a new perspective or focus to the original data, or (4) validate or expand findings from the original analysis ( Hinds, Vogel, & Clarke-Steffen, 1997 ). Synthesis of knowledge from meta-analysis or aggregation may be viewed as an additional purpose of secondary analysis ( Heaton, 2004 ).

Qualitative studies utilize several different data sources, such as interviews, observations, field notes, archival meeting minutes or clinical record notes, to produce rich descriptions of human experiences within a social context. The work typically requires significant resources (e.g., personnel effort/time) for data collection and analysis. When feasible, qualitative secondary analysis (QSA) can be a useful and cost-effective alternative to designing and conducting redundant primary studies. With advances in computerized data storage and analysis programs, sharing qualitative datasets has become easier. However, little guidance is available for conducting, structuring procedures, or evaluating QSA ( Szabo & Strang, 1997 ).

QSA has been described as “an almost invisible enterprise in social research” ( Fielding, 2004 ). Primary data is often re-used; however, descriptions of this practice are embedded within the methods section of qualitative research reports rather than explicitly identified as QSA. Moreover, searching or classifying reports as QSA is difficult because many researchers refrain from identifying their work as secondary analyses ( Hinds et al., 1997 ; Thorne, 1998a ). In this paper, we provide an overview of QSA, the purposes, and modes of data sharing and approaches. A unique, expanded QSA approach is presented as a methodological exemplar to illustrate considerations.

QSA Typology

Heaton (2004) classified QSA studies based on the relationship between the secondary and primary questions and the scope of data analyzed. Types of QSA included studies that (1) investigated questions different from the primary study, (2) applied a unique theoretical perspective, or (3) extended the primary work. Heaton’s literature review (2004) showed that studies varied in the choice of data used, from selected portions to entire or combined datasets.

Modes of Data Sharing

Heaton (2004) identified three modes of data sharing: formal, informal and auto-data. Formal data sharing involves accessing and analyzing deposited or archived qualitative data by an independent group of researchers. Historical research often uses formal data sharing. Informal data sharing refers to requests for direct access to an investigator’s data for use alone or to pool with other data, usually as a result of informal networking. In some instances, the primary researchers may be invited to collaborate. The most common mode of data sharing is auto-data, defined as further exploration of a qualitative data set by the primary research team. Due to the iterative nature of qualitative research, when using auto-data, it may be difficult to determine where the original study questions end and discrete, distinct analysis begins ( Heaton, 1998 ).

An Exemplar QSA

Below we describe a QSA exemplar conducted by the primary author of this paper (JT), a member of the original research team, who used a supplementary approach to examine concepts revealed but not fully investigated in the primary study. First, we describe an overview of the original study on which the QSA was based. Then, the exemplar QSA is presented to illustrate: (1) the use of auto-data when the new research questions are closely related to or extend the original study aims ( Table 1 ), (2) the collection of additional clinical record data to supplement the original dataset and (3) the performance of separate member checking in the form of expert review and opinion. Considerations and recommendations for use of QSA are reviewed with illustrations taken from the exemplar study ( Table 2 ). Finally, discussion of conclusions and implications is included to assist with planning and implementation of QSA studies.

The Primary Study

Briefly, the original study was a micro-level ethnography designed to describe the processes of care and communication with patients weaning from prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) in a 28-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit ( Broyles, Colbert, Tate, & Happ, 2008 ; Happ, Swigart, Tate, Arnold, Sereika, & Hoffman, 2007 ; Happ et al, 2007 , 2010 ). Both the primary study and the QSA were approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Pittsburgh. Data were collected by two experienced investigators and a PhD student-research project coordinator. Data sources consisted of sustained field observations, interviews with patients, family members and clinicians, and clinical record review, including all narrative clinical documentation recorded by direct caregivers.

During iterative data collection and analysis in the original study, it became apparent that anxiety and agitation had an effect on the duration of ventilator weaning episodes, an observation that helped to formulate the questions for the QSA ( Tate, Dabbs, Hoffman, Milbrandt & Happ, 2012 ). Thus, the secondary topic was closely aligned as an important facet of the primary phenomenon. The close, natural relationship between the primary and QSA research questions is demonstrated in the side-by-side comparison in Table 1 . This QSA focused on new questions which extended the original study to recognition and management of anxiety or agitation, behaviors that often accompany mechanical ventilation and weaning but occur throughout the trajectory of critical illness and recovery.

Practical advantages.

A key practical advantage of QSA is maximizing use of existing data. Data collection efforts represent a significant percentage of the research budget in terms of cost and labor ( Coyer & Gallo, 2005 ). This is particularly important in view of the competition for research funding. Planning and implementing a qualitative study involves considerable time and expertise not only for data collecting (e.g., interviews, participant observation or focus group), but in establishing access, credibility and relationships ( Thorne, 1994 ) and in conducting the analysis. The cost of QSA is often seen as negligible since the outlay of resources for data collection is assumed by the original study. However, QSA incurs costs related to storage, researcher’s effort for review of existing data, analysis, and any further data collection that may be necessary.

Another advantage of QSA is access to data from an assembled cohort. In conducting original primary research, practical concerns arise when participants are difficult to locate or reluctant to divulge sensitive details to a researcher. In the case of vulnerable critically ill patients, participation in research may seem an unnecessary burden to family members who may be unwilling to provide proxy consent ( Fielding, 2004 ). QSA permits new questions to be asked of data collected previously from these vulnerable groups ( Rew, Koniak-Griffin, Lewis, Miles, & O'Sullivan, 2000 ), or from groups or events that occur with scarcity ( Thorne, 1994 ). Participants’ time and effort in the primary study therefore becomes more worthwhile. In fact, it is recommended that data already collected from existing studies of vulnerable populations or about sensitive topics be analyzed prior to engaging new participants. In this way, QSA becomes a cumulative rather than a repetitive process ( Fielding, 2004 ).

Data Adequacy and Congruency

Secondary researchers must determine that the primary data set meets the needs of the QSA. Data may be insufficient to answer a new question or the focus of the QSA may be so different as to render the pursuit of a QSA impossible ( Heaton, 1998 ). The underlying assumptions, sampling plan, research questions, and conceptual framework selected to answer the original study question may not fit the question posed during QSA ( Coyer & Gallo, 2005 ). The researchers of the primary study may have selectively sampled participants and analyzed the resulting data in a manner that produced a narrow or uneven scope of data ( Hinds et al., 1997 ). Thus, the data needed to fully answer questions posed by the QSA may be inadequately addressed in the primary study. A critical review of the existing dataset is an important first step in determining whether the primary data fits the secondary questions ( Hinds et al., 1997 ).

Passage of Time

The timing of the QSA is another important consideration. If the primary study and secondary study are performed sequentially, findings of the original study may influence the secondary study. On the other hand, studies performed concurrently offer the benefit of access to both the primary research team and participants member checking ( Hinds et al., 1997 ).

The passage of time since the primary study was conducted can also have a distinct effect on the usefulness of the primary dataset. Data may be outdated or contain a historical bias ( Coyer & Gallo, 2005 ). Since context changes over time, characteristics of the phenomena of interest may have changed. Analysis of older datasets may not illuminate the phenomena as they exist today.( Hinds et al., 1997 ) Even if participants could be re-contacted, their perspectives, memories and experiences change. The passage of time also has an affect on the relationship of the primary researchers to the data – so auto-data may be interpreted differently by the same researcher with the passage of time. Data are bound by time and history, therefore, may be a threat to internal validity unless a new investigator is able to account for these effects when interpreting data ( Rew et al., 2000 ).

Researcher stance/Context involvement

Issues related to context are a major source of criticism of QSA ( Gladstone, Volpe, & Boydell, 2007 ). One of the hallmarks of qualitative research is the relationship of the researcher to the participants. It can be argued that removing active contact with participants violates this premise. Tacit understandings developed in the field may be difficult or impossible to reconstruct ( Thorne, 1994 ). Qualitative fieldworkers often react and redirect the data collection based on a growing knowledge of the setting. The setting may change as a result of external or internal factors. Interpretation of researchers as participants in a unique time and social context may be impossible to re-construct even if the secondary researchers were members of the primary team ( Mauthner, Parry, & Milburn, 1998 ). Because the context in which the data were originally produced cannot be recovered, the ability of the researcher to react to the lived experience may be curtailed in QSA ( Gladstone et al., 2007 ). Researchers utilize a number of tactics to filter and prioritize what to include as data that may not be apparent in either the written or spoken records of those events ( Thorne, 1994 ). Reflexivity between the researcher, participants and setting is impossible to recreate when examining pre-existing data.

Relationship of QSA Researcher to Primary Study

The relationship of the QSA researcher to the primary study is an important consideration. When the QSA researcher is not part of the original study team, contractual arrangements detailing access to data, its format, access to the original team, and authorship are required ( Hinds et al., 1997 ). The QSA researcher should assess the condition of the data, documents including transcripts, memos and notes, and clarity and flow of interactions ( Hinds et al., 1997 ). An outline of the original study and data collection procedures should be critically reviewed ( Heaton, 1998 ). If the secondary researcher was not a member of the original study team, access to the original investigative team for the purpose of ongoing clarification is essential ( Hinds et al., 1997 ).

Membership on the original study team may, however, offer the secondary researcher little advantage depending on their role in the primary study. Some research team members may have had responsibility for only one type of data collection or data source. There may be differences in involvement with analysis of the primary data.

Informed Consent of Participants

Thorne (1998) questioned whether data collected for one study purpose can ethically be re-examined to answer another question without participants’ consent. Many institutional review boards permit consent forms to include language about the possibility of future use of existing data. While this mechanism is becoming routine and welcomed by researchers, concerns have been raised that a generic consent cannot possibly address all future secondary questions and may violate the principle of full informed consent ( Gladstone et al., 2007 ). Local variations in study approval practices by institutional review boards may influence the ability of researchers to conduct a QSA.

Rigor of QSA

The primary standards for evaluating rigor of qualitative studies are trustworthiness (logical relationship between the data and the analytic claims), fit (the context within which the findings are applicable), transferability (the overall generalizability of the claims) and auditabilty (the transparency of the procedural steps and the analytic moves processes) ( Lincoln & Guba, 1991 ). Thorne suggests that standard procedures for assuring rigor can be modified for QSA ( Thorne, 1994 ). For instance, the original researchers may be viewed as sources of confirmation while new informants, other related datasets and validation by clinical experts are sources of triangulation that may overcome the lack of access to primary subjects ( Heaton, 2004 ; Thorne, 1994 ).

Our observations, derived from the experience of posing a new question of existing qualitative data serves as a template for researchers considering QSA. Considerations regarding quality, availability and appropriateness of existing data are of primary importance. A realistic plan for collecting additional data to answer questions posed in QSA should consider burden and resources for data collection, analysis, storage and maintenance. Researchers should consider context as a potential limitation to new analyses. Finally, the cost of QSA should be fully evaluated prior to making a decision to pursue QSA.

This work in writing examines the issues surrounding qualitative and quantitative nursing research and examines specific cases in relation to these issues specifically in the areas of ethics, rigor, data collection, and analysis and in findings arising from such research in the area of secondary analysis.

Introduction

Secondary data analysis is defined by Polit and Hungler (2001) as involving “the use of data gathered in a previous study to test new hypotheses or explore new relationships.” (Stommel and Willis, 2004) There are many ins and outs when using secondary analysis in research. (Barrett, 1994) There are issues, which arise from the conduction of secondary analysis on “large, national survey data sets.” (Kniepp and Yarandi, 2001) Secondary analysis is used in research across many fields of study including such as criminology and nursing. (Riedel, 2000 and Orsi, et al, 1999). Building capacity in nursing involves the aspect of nursing research and the contribution that are made toward the body of knowledge in nursing. (Jeffs, et al, 2006)

The work of Jacobson, Hamilton, and Galloway (1993) entitled “Obtaining and Evaluating Data Sets for Secondary Analysis in Nursing Research” states that secondary analysis of existing data offers many advantages to the nurse researcher. Data from large-scale studies are such that may be “reanalyzed through secondary analysis with a fresh perspective, thus enhancing the original study’s contribution to scientific knowledge.” (Jacobson, Hamilton and Galloway, 1993) It is additionally related that there is a special level of care that must be exercised by the secondary analyst due to such as the “lack of involvement in data collection procedures may decrease insight intothe original study’s limitations, vigilant skepticism should accompany all phases of the research process in secondary data analysis, just as it should in all other research.” (Jacobson, Hamilton and Galloway, 1993)

The work of Bibb (2007) entitled “Issues Associated with Secondary Analysis of Population Health Data” reports that the study and analysis of population health data “are crucial to the success of population health.” Bierman and Bubolz (2003) note limitations using secondary data analysis, which includes analysis of population health data and the difficulty experienced in locating such data and the existing “incongruity of primary and secondary research objectives, as well as quality of data. (Paraphrased) The resolution of data location difficulties can be overcome through data location by searching “organization, survey and data warehouse web sites and through the review of published research studies.” (Clark and Cossette, 2000; and Smaldone and Connor, 2003)Various forms of secondary analysis exist including the: (1) cumulative meta-analysis; (2) meta-analyses; (3) meta-data analysis; (4) Meta-method; (5) meta-study; and (6) meta-syntheses. (Gough, and Land, 2004)

The work of du Plessis and Human (2009) reflects on the level of “meaningful research” that is available to nurses when conducting collaborate secondary analysis. Heaton (1998) in the work entitled “Secondary Analysis of Qualitative Data” reports that secondary analysis “involves the utilization of existing data, collected for the purposes of a prior study, in order to pursue a research interest which is distinct from that of the original work.”

Description

A recent review of trauma among veterans and military personnel reports that they “experience higher rates of trauma exposure in comparison to the general population, with associated higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder.” (Suris and Lind, 2008, p.250) The type of trauma most widely studied is reported as “trauma in female veterans” due to sexual assault including such as “childhood sexual assault, civilian adult sexual assault and sexual assault that occurs while serving in the military.” (Suris and Lind, 2008, p.251) MST is defined by the Department of Veterans Affairs as “sexual harassment that is threatening in character or physical assault of a sexual nature that occurred while the victim was in the military, regardless of geographic location of the trauma, gender of the victim or the relationship to the perpetrator.” (Suris and Lind, 2008) MST is reported as the term used “to describe physical assault, sexual assault, stalking or harassment that occurs during active duty.” (Suris and Lind, 2008, p.251) It was reported by the VA in 2002 “approximately 1.7 million women and 1% of men have experienced MST.” (Suris and Lind, 2008, p.251) The work of Suris and Lind (2008) report that there is a prevalence of military sexual trauma (MST) and associated mental and physical health consequences with risk factors for MST stated to include age, enlisted rank, negative home life, and previous assault history. In addition, MST has been “associated with increased screening rates of depression and alcohol abuse, in addition to significantly increased odds of meeting criteria of posttraumatic stress disorder.” (Suris and Lind, 2008) MST has further been associated with “reporting increased number of current physical symptoms, impaired health status, and more chronic health problems in veterans.” (Suris and Lind, 2008, p.250) Sexual assault against women in the military is reported as being “a widespread problem.” (Himmelfarb, Yaeger and Mintz, 2006, p.837) The present study reviews the issues of military sexual trauma and the qualitative and quantitative research methodologies used in various studies, the questions surrounding qualitative versus quantitative research and the evidence supporting each.

Advantages of Secondary Analysis

Secondary data analysis is described as “additional analysis of data already available in some form.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368) The major advantage of secondary data analysis is stated to be that the data “already are collected. Because the data are readily available in a useful form, the major expense of data collection is saved. In addition, a secondary data analysis may serve to identify problems to be explored further in future studies.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.369) Pubic national data sets have inherent advantages: (1) they contain information about a wide variety of patients,  risk factors, health states, and interventions and because of this researchers are not forced into limitations of data from one population or area of study but have the capacity to examine many issues of health; (2) since the same information has been collected on a routine basis for many years it is possible to examine the trends and identify the differences; (2) an institutional Review Board may waive the necessity to gain approval which serves to save a great deal of time since the data sets are available for public use. (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.369)

Limitations of Secondary Analysis

Stated, as one potential limitation of the use of national surveys is that they contain stratified data collection methods that make the requirement of complex statistical analysis. Secondary analysis of research studies tends to prevent complications as the primary study design may have flaws or the data may be too old or in the case when the variable of interest in the present study was never collected. It is necessary to make careful examination of secondary data prior to it being used. It is necessary to answer specific questions including the following stated questions:

  • What wasthe purpose of the original study, and howdoes it match with the purpose of the secondaryanalysis?
  • How and under what conditionswere the data collected?
  • What wasdone to check the accuracy of the data?
  • What measurement instruments wereused, and how reliable and valid were they?
  • What was the unit of analysis (i.e., individualor group)? Public-use national data setsaddress these questions in a consistent andstandard manner in the extensive documentationthat accompanies them. (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.369)

Fit with New Research Question

As previously stated, it is necessary to examine secondary data in regards to ‘fit’ and specifically how the data was derived and for what purpose in previous studies and ensuring that it is applicable and appropriate for use in the present study and the variables and issues examined. Questions that can be used to guide the determination of which variables in the data set are appropriate in a present study are reported to include those as follows:

  • How were the concepts defined?
  • What was the unit of analysis?
  • When was the information collected? (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.369)

It is reported that a software program was developed by the NCHS “called the Statistical Export Tabulation System (SETS) to assist users in the efficient extraction of data files from the CDROM.” The SETS is reported as being readable in Windows and NT4 operating systems and contains variable word components that allow students to format the file.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.370)

Following the selection of the variables which are chosen by name the SETS generates subsets of data files which format variables and values which are defined for export. Next, the files are directly downloaded from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention without use of the SETS. The database is imported to the SPSS and the students are able to collaborate with a statistician at the school to ensure that the appropriate statistical testing is used and the analysis can then be conducted. Students receive encouragement to document their research process in a special procedure manual used for evaluation and replication. In addition, students are provided with a “criterion sheet to evaluate their own studies and critique the work of their peers. The course grade is reported to be based on a written report documenting the findings of the study in addition to an audiovisual presentation of the primary components of the study. This report is stated to be considered “the first draft of a manuscript for publication.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002) Stated limitations to the use of the data sets and issues that should be noted are that the national surveys “use stratified data collection methods and mayoversample segments of the population.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.370)

It is reported that stratification and clustering “results in a larger variance between groups than would occur in random sampling, and, as a consequence, appropriate analysis of the data must adjust for this design effect.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002) It is reported that the ‘Research Applications’ course enables students in developing the required skills and in gaining the needed confidence to accomplish secondary analysis of national public data sets which are touted as “an instructive vehicle for teaching students about the research process that will serve them well into the future.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.371)

Quantitative versus Qualitative

While the view of qualitative research has been “refuted repeatedly in the past several decades, the emphasis on evidence-based research is against relegating qualitative work to second-class status.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.71) Issues that are reported to create additional complications in regards to qualitative inquiry’s merit as a science are inclusive of “the insufficient boundary clarification between qualitative and quantitative methods” as well as “the diversity of qualitative methods, the artistic features of qualitative research, and the propensity to evaluate qualitative inquiry against the conventional scientific standard of rigor.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.71)

Qualitative inquiry is reported as being both “distinct and separate” from quantitative inquiry and each research, methodology is committed to differentiated research styles, differentiated epistemologies and differentiated representations. Qualitative inquiry, according to Bogdan and Bilken (1982) is held to have emerged as a response to “the inadequacies of quantitative inquiry.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.71) Quantitative research has its focus on “causal relationships described in terms of observation statements, verifications and prediction”, while qualitative research, has as its focus, the “exploration of human behavior and the search for understanding through people’s actions.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.71)

Quantitative research can be differentiated from qualitative research which makes use of such as “life histories, historical narratives, ethnographic prose, first-person accounts, and biographical and autobiographical accounts” in that quantitative research makes use of such as mathematical models and statistical tables and graphs, and often reports the research findings in impersonal, third-person style.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.72) Sandelowski (1986) proposed a framework for the examination of the similarities and differences that exist between the qualitative and quantitative approaches through incorporation of four factors that were proposed in 1981 by Guba and Lincoln relating to tests of rigor (1) truth value; (2) applicability; (3) consistency; and (4) neutrality. (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.72) The framework is repotted as being inclusive of “alternative criteria for assessing the rigor of qualitative research: (1) credibility; (2) fittingness or transferability; (3) auditability or dependability; and (4) confirmability. (Guba, 1981, Lincoln and Guba, 1985 in: Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.72)

In the present, qualitative researchers are reported as being “more likely to reveal how rigor was attained and maintained.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.73) However, it is noted in the work of Gearing (2004) that there is a tendency “to state something was done without explication of how it was done.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.73) The work of Morse (2007) provides a description of how generalizability in qualitative work is attained “through development of meaning, not prescriptive use of rules” and insists that “concepts must be well developed to be recognizable in other settings.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.73) It was the insistence of Farmer et al (2006) that “the richness of description in qualitative work of often missing from their own methodological descriptions.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.74)

Data Collection

The work of Cohn, Jia and Larson (2009) entitled “Evaluation of Statistical Approaches in Quantitative Nursing Research” reports a study that was published in the Clinical Nursing Research journal that states the purposes of the study being: (1) the development of a tool to assess statistical methods; and (2) use of the tool to evaluate recently published quantitative research.” (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, p.223) The statistical approaches utilized in 152 studies published in the five top impact-factor nursing research journals from September 2005 to August 2007. Studies reported are stated to have been high in quality with 45% of those scoring 80% and 100% and 22% achieving a 100% score. It is reported that predictors of high scores were “interdisciplinary authorship, a statistician, coauthor and the number of aims.” (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, p.223) It was concluded that “studies published in high-impact-factor nursing journals are statistically sound and provide a solid foundation for evidence-based practice.” (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009) It is reported that both researchers and practitioners alike are challenged in the present drive toward practice that is evidence-based. (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, paraphrased) With the integration of research and practice, it has become critically important that quantitative study designs be of a quality that is particularly high. It is possible to be misled by the study conclusions in the case of incorrect statistical analysis or misinterpretation of that analysis. (Katz, Crawford, Lu, Kantor & Margolois, 2004 cited in: Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, p.224)

It is reported that the Consolidation Standards for Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement in 1996 was published for bringing about improvement in reporting quality of trials that were randomized and controlled. In addition, the 2001 and 2004 guidelines published by CONSORT have enhanced the transparency in reporting and enabled both editors and readers alike in gaining better comprehension of the design, conduction, and analysis of individual randomized controlled trails. (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, paraphrased) In addition that have been further guideline, 2002es published for appraising and interpreting research and this is reported to include “methods for conducting and assessing systematic literature reviews, the Transparent Reporting of Evaluation of Nonrandomized Designs for Nonrandomized Public Health Studies , the Outbreak Reports and Interventions Studies of Nosocomial InfectionStatement , and Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology , design especially for cohort, case control,and cross-sectional studies (‘Strobe Statement’, 2008).” (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, p.224)

It is reported that Anthony (1996) conducted an assessment of the statistical methods that were utilized in 60 articles and published in a nursing research journal and the report states that there were indiscrepancies found in the analysis of data which included the failure in assessing the data for normal distribution, in matching the data type to the statistical test and in treating paired data (pre- and post-measurements).The report concludes that while the errors were “not necessarily serious, there had been little improvement when compared with the previous decade.” (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, p.224) It is also reported that studies of medical literature have demonstrated “pervasive flaws in statistical analysis. Statistical errors were reported in 85% of 243 studies and 40% of the 154 articles reviewed in psychiatric journals a whopping 52% failed to include information about the statistical method used and 75% used a test that was not correct or a test that had an error in interpretation. In addition, 22% are reported to have drawn conclusions that the data failed to support and 80% did not describe the test used. (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, paraphrased) Mariani and Marubaini (2000) state findings following their review of studies that 81% failed to report an identifiable statistical design.” (Cohn, Jia and Larson, 2009, p.224) No similar studies were found in the field of nursing it is reported.

The work of Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, (2002) reports that teaching the research process to graduate nursing students takes place in several different ways. One method which is innovative in nature is secondary analysis of large sets of national data and this method is to be such that makes provision of a “meaningful research experience, while saving time and costs.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368) However, it is reported that locating data that is useful and that aligns with the clinical interests of students that is easily accessed presents quite a challenge.  It is related that the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) both “collects and maintains data” concerning the U.S. population health and additionally provides “summary reports and statistical tables” in addition to making large data sets for public use available. Contained in the data sets are demographic and health status information on U.S. citizens from their birth to their death which are reported as being “appropriate for cross-sectional and sometimes even longitudinal studies.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368) Data files include such as: (1) natality data; (2) fetal death data; (3) The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey; (4) the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey; and (5) the National Health Interview Survey. (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368) These files are generally available on CD-ROM or diskette and are available for purchase directly from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) for about $20.00 each. Some data sets are available for download directly from the NCHS Web site and the files are reported to be “accompanied by methodological documentation.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368)

It is reported that the nursing profession has not historically made use of secondary analysis of large national database or support this approach to any extent in textbooks of published research literature.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368) Nursing research textbooks are reported to vary “in the degree to which they treat secondary analysis as a useful research approach.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002) Other health professionals are reported to use secondary analysis of large state or national database for investigating health issues, it is rare to find nurse authors of such investigations.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368) In fact, it is reported that a search of the MedLine database for 1998 and 1999 found that “14 secondary analysis research reports [were] conducted by nurses.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.368) 13 of these studies were reported to be “secondary analyses of data from relatively small sample research studies.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.369) Merely one research report utilized a large national data set and during the same two-year period it is reported that “12 research reports, based on large national data sets, were identified as conducted by medical and public health professionals.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.369) It is clear that nurses are failing to make use of “large repositories of available data. However, these repositories are potentially useful for conducting research concerning myriad health issues relevant to nursing.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p369) Explanations for this oversight are reported to be such as “lack of knowledge concerning the availability of the data, lack of skill in extracting the wanted data, or lack of knowledge in applying the appropriate statistical tests.” (Brosnan, Eriksen and Lin, 2002, p.369)

Data Analysis

Analysis of data collected is often questionable. Kimerling, et al (2010) reports the analyses of members of the military who were screened for sexual trauma including 17580 (80%) women and 108149 (75.8%) men. The study reports that military sexual trauma was reported by 15.1% of the women and 0.7% of the men. Military sexual trauma screen status was significantly related to several demographic characteristics, health care services use, and military service characteristics.” (Kimerling et al, 2010, p.2160) The researchers in the study report that the study results “bear several caveats including that the rate of military sexual trauma and the rate of mental illness reported in this study likely represent conservative estimates because both tend to be underreported. (Kimerling, et al, 2010, paraphrased) While a great percentage of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans se Veterans Health Administration services, these data do not necessarily generalize to other health care settings.” (Kimberling, et al, 2010, p.2161) Due to analyses being cross-sectional it is reported that the precise timing of military sexual trauma, deployment and the onset of mental health conditions cannot be determined.” (Kimberling, et al, 2010, p.2161) The result is that there can be no conclusions stated in regards to military sexual trauma and the causative of that trauma in regards to the mental health of the veterans in the study. In addition, while frequency and length of deployment which was measured in the reported study is reported as being such that “may serve as proxies for combat exposure.” (Kimberling, et al, 2010, p.2162) It is ultimately reported that more research is needed. research accounting for a broader range of service-related stressors, including both military sexual trauma and combat exposure, is needed.

Data Management

Data management, or indeed lack of proper management of data collected often results in findings in which the data is skewed or simply incorrect. Suris and Lind (2008) report that the VA 2002 national MST surveillance data from approximately 1.7 million VA patients indicated that 22% of women and 1% of men have experienced MST.” Reported is that 22% of women and 1% of men experienced MST and that women are 20 times more likely to be victimized than are men. IN addition, since there are 20 times more men in the military than women and 22% of females and 1% of men screen positive for MST that the numbers of men and women who experienced MST are about equal.  However, since 54% of VA users screening positive are men it is reported likely that there are more male victims of MST than women. These numbers do not make sense because if there are 20 times more men in the military than women and 54% of men screen positive for MST then it is highly unlikely that equal numbers of men and women in the military experience MST but instead it appears likely that many more men than women users of VA have experienced MST.

There is reported to have been criticism targeted at qualitative researchers for what is a “perceived failure to demonstrate methodological rigor.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009) While qualitative research methods are “accepted as congruent with and relevant to the perspective goals of nursing” there is an ongoing criticism of the methodological rigor or qualitative work.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.70) Davidson Reynolds (1971) held that rigor is “the use of logical systems that are shared and accepted by relevant scientists to ensure agreement on the predictions and explanations of the theory. This historical definition highlights the important attributes of rigor arising in a predominantly positivist discourse.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.70)

Logic and accepted systems are used in rigorous research according to Ryan-Nicholls and Will (2009) which is reported to provide strength to the arguments made by researchers when demonstrating significance of the findings. Rigor is reported as part of the “iterative, self,-correcting nature of the research.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.71) First data are collected and then systematically analyzed and findings presented which “are open to evaluation and replication.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.71) Next results that are not correct can be “identified and revised or refuted.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.72) It is reported that when quantitative researchers make attempts at applying this definition in determining the rigor of qualitative work that “a dilemma arises”. (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.72) The reported resistance of the positivist to qualitative research is such that extends beyond “the distinction between hard and soft sciences” as positivist practices generate the assumption “that truth can transcend personal bias and opinion.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.73) Those supporting quantitative research view qualitative research “as an attack against this tradition.” (Carey, 1989 in: Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.73) Positive science and its assault on qualitative research are viewed as “an attempt to impose one version of the truth over the other.” (Ryan-Nicholls and Will, 2009, p.73)

Ethical Considerations

The work of Glenister (1996) entitled “Nursing Research Ethics: Some Problems and Recommended Changes” reports uncertainty in the strategies used to ensure that research in nursing is ethical. It is reported that the codes and guidelines presently available demonstrate limitations and that local research ethics committees(LRECs) appear to be “medically dominated, biased against nursing research, uncertain of the criteria by which they make adjustments, and, in some cases, harmful to those who make submissions.” (Glenister, 1996) In addition, reported is “some evidence of alack of equity in the treatment of nursing research and of research methods.” (Glenister, 1996, p.1)

Richards and Swartz (2002) writes in the work entitled “Ethics of Qualitative Research: Are There Special Issues for Health Services Research” that there is an “increasing volume of qualitative research and articles about qualitative methods…published recently in medical journals. However, compared with the extensive debate in social sciences literature, there has been little consideration in medical journals of the ethical issues surrounding qualitative research.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.135) There are reported to be four potential risks to participants including: (1) anxiety and distress; (2) exploitation, (3) misrepresentation; and (4) identification of the participant in published papers by themselves or others. (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.135)

It is reported by Richards and Scwartz as follows: “A fundamental ethical requirement of all research is that it is scientifically sound. It should be properly designed and carried out by researchers with adequate levels of expertise and supervision.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.136) Training and supervision issues are specifically “relevant to qualitative research in which the researcher can be regarded as the ‘research instruments’ and in which the researcher will be “often working in isolation.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.136) Ensuring that standards that are agreed upon are met requires ethics committees inclusion or referral to “experienced qualitative researchers when assessing qualitative research proposals.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.137) Furthermore, it must be considered that research in the area of health care is likely to “raise participants’ expectations that help will be forthcoming.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.137) This is stated to be most particularly the case when the participants know that the researcher is a heath practitioner therefore, “explicit ethical guidelines define the duty of follow-up care for participants in quantitative research involving therapeutic interventions, but to date there has been no ethical guidance recognizing the special issues which arise when the researcher is also a health practitioner.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.137) The researcher therefore, must necessarily “be clear about his or her role boundaries, and by ensuring that appropriate information and support are available.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.138) Informed consent is reported as a “prerequisite for all research involving identifiable subjects, except in cases where an ethics committee judges that such consent is not possible and where it is felt that the benefits of the research outweigh the potential harm.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.138) It is stated that an interview study should make a minimum requirement for an interview study of written consent and that the written consent should be obtained from the participant only upon their being informed both orally and in writing about specific issues: (1) the purpose and scope of the study; (2) the types of questions that will be asked; (3) how the results will be sued; (4) the method of anonymization; and (5) the extent to which the responses of participants will be used in reports about the study. (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.138) In addition, it is reported that participants in the study should be provided a time period to consider their participation and to ask questions of the researcher. (Richards and Swartz, 2002, paraphrased) Qualitative research is such that “unexpected themes can arise during the analysis; therefore, at the time of the interviews, the potential uses of the data are not always clear to the research team.” (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.139) Additionally, the researchers may desire that they are able to access interviews at a later date and therefore may archive interviews. Participants should be fully informed of this and given the opportunity to withdraw their consent for use of their data. If they so desire the participants should be allowed to do so. (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.139) Two approaches exist for ensuring that adequate consent is acquired in qualitative studies: (1) participants can be asked to give very general consent when the study begins; or (2) researchers can treat consent as an on-going process rather than a one-off event. (Richards and Swartz, 2002, p.139)

Conclusions

The literature reviewed in this study has demonstrated questionable approaches in qualitative research and most specifically in regards to data analysis methods and the findings rendered in some qualitative studies. Even in quantitative studies data analysis has been found, based on the literature reviewed to be questionable. There are many considerations in nursing research that must be examined prior to ensuing in a research initiative. Nursing professionals who engage in research should necessarily interact with mentors and more experienced nursing professionals prior to engaging in research to ensure that they meet the necessary standards and guidelines in order to meet the standards of rigor that are required in nursing research.

Definition:

Secondary data refers to information that has been collected, processed, and published by someone else, rather than the researcher gathering the data firsthand. Secondary Data Formats

Secondary Data Gathering Guide

Here are some steps to follow when gathering secondary data:

This can help researchers gain a more complete understanding of the research topic and draw more robust conclusions.

In the social sciences, a secondary source is usually a scholar book, journal article, or digital or print document that was created by someone who did not directly experience or participate in the events or conditions under investigation. Secondary sources are not evidence per se, but rather, provide an interpretation, analysis, or commentary derived from the content of primary source materials and/or other secondary sources.

Value of Secondary Sources

To do research, you must cite research. Primary sources do not represent research per se, but only the artifacts from which most research is derived. Therefore, the majority of sources in a literature review are secondary sources that present research findings, analysis, and the evaluation of other researcher's works.

Reviewing secondary source material can be of valu e in improving your overall research paper because secondary sources facilitate the communication of what is known about a topic. This literature also helps you understand the level of uncertainty about what is currently known and what additional information is needed from further research. It is important to note, however, that secondary sources are not the subject of your analysis. Instead, they represent various opinions, interpretations, and arguments about the research problem you are investigating--opinions, interpretations, and arguments with which you may either agree or disagree with as part of your own analysis of the literature.

We released sample test papers and a continuous tool for assessment of the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC).

The Executive Director, Mr. Dan Odongo, while addressing a two-day stakeholder meeting on the assessment under the NLSC in Kampala on March 18, 2024, said that the aim of the sample materials is to guide schools on the new assessment formats for Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).

“With these tools, schools will now be comforted and know how the assessment will go. The sample papers are, however, just dummies of what is likely to come in the end-cycle assessment. The final scenarios will certainly be different,’’ Odongo said.

Ismael Mulindwa, the Director for Basic and Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, said that the meeting was relevant as it targeted key stakeholders with various complementary roles in the implementation of the NLSC.

Florence Buyinza Agola, the Manager of Examinations Development, stated that the goal of the new curriculum is to create lifelong learners who can adapt to the changing world.

She added that obtaining such quality graduates requires implementing holistic learning, valid and reliable assessment of the NLSC, and full participation of all stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Education and Sports, including commissioners and assistant commissioners, and ministry and regional inspectors of the Directorate of Education Standards (DES), among others.

Research Identifies Characteristics of Cities That Would Support Young People’s Mental Health

Survey responses from global panel that included young people provide insights into what would make cities mental health-friendly for youth

As cities around the world continue to draw young people for work, education, and social opportunities, a new study identifies characteristics that would support young urban dwellers’ mental health. The findings, based on survey responses from a global panel that included adolescents and young adults, provide a set of priorities that city planners can adopt to build urban environments that are safe, equitable, and inclusive. 

To determine city characteristics that could bolster youth mental health, researchers administered an initial survey to a panel of more than 400, including young people and a multidisciplinary group of researchers, practitioners, and advocates. Through two subsequent surveys, participants prioritized six characteristics that would support young city dwellers’ mental health: opportunities to build life skills; age-friendly environments that accept young people’s feelings and values; free and safe public spaces where young people can connect; employment and job security; interventions that address the social determinants of health; and urban design with youth input and priorities in mind. 

The paper was published online February 21 in  Nature .

The study’s lead author is Pamela Collins, MD, MPH, chair of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Mental Health. The study was conducted while Collins was on the faculty at the University of Washington. The paper was written by an international, interdisciplinary team, including citiesRISE, a global nonprofit that works to transform mental health policy and practice in cities, especially for young people.

Cities have long been a draw for young people. Research by UNICEF projects that cities will be home to 70 percent of the world’s children by 2050. Although urban environments influence a broad range of health outcomes, both positive and negative, their impacts manifest unequally. Mental disorders are the leading causes of disability among 10- to 24-year-olds globally. Exposure to urban inequality, violence, lack of green space, and fear of displacement disproportionately affects marginalized groups, increasing risk for poor mental health among urban youth.

“Right now, we are living with the largest population of adolescents in the world’s history, so this is an incredibly important group of people for global attention,” says Collins. “Investing in young people is an investment in their present well-being and future potential, and it’s an investment in the next generation—the children they will bear.” 

Data collection for the study began in April 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. To capture its possible impacts, researchers added an open-ended survey question asking panelists how the pandemic influenced their perceptions of youth mental health in cities. The panelists reported that the pandemic either shed new light on the inequality and uneven distribution of resources experienced by marginalized communities in urban areas, or confirmed their preconceptions of how social vulnerability exacerbates health outcomes. 

For their study, the researchers recruited a panel of more than 400 individuals from 53 countries, including 327 young people ages 14 to 25, from a cross-section of fields, including education, advocacy, adolescent health, mental health and substance use, urban planning and development, data and technology, housing, and criminal justice. The researchers administered three sequential surveys to panelists beginning in April 2020 that asked panelists to identify elements of urban life that would support mental health for young people.

The top 37 characteristics were then grouped into six domains: intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, organizational, policy, and environment. Within these domains, panelists ranked characteristics based on immediacy of impact on youth mental health, ability to help youth thrive, and ease or feasibility of implementation. 

Taken together, the characteristics identified in the study provide a comprehensive set of priorities that policymakers and urban planners can use as a guide to improve young city dwellers' mental health. Among them: Youth-focused mental health and educational services could support young people’s emotional development and self-efficacy. Investment in spaces that facilitate social connection may help alleviate young people’s experiences of isolation and support their need for healthy, trusting relationships. Creating employment opportunities and job security could undo the economic losses that young people and their families experienced during the pandemic and help cities retain residents after a COVID-era exodus from urban centers.  

The findings suggest that creating a mental health-friendly city for young people requires investments across multiple interconnected sectors like transportation, housing, employment, health, and urban planning, with a central focus on social and economic equity. They also require urban planning policy approaches that commit to systemic and sustained collaboration, without magnifying existing privileges through initiatives like gentrification and developing green spaces at the expense of marginalized communities in need of affordable housing.

The authors say this framework underscores that responses by cities should include young people in the planning and design of interventions that directly impact their mental health and well-being.

Background: The use of surveillance technologies is becoming increasingly common in inpatient mental health settings, commonly justified as efforts to improve safety and cost-effectiveness. However, the use of these technologies has been questioned in light of limited research conducted and the sensitivities, ethical concerns and potential harms of surveillance. This systematic review aims to: 1) map how surveillance technologies have been employed in inpatient mental health settings, 2) identify any best practice guidance, 3) explore how they are experienced by patients, staff and carers, and 4) examine evidence regarding their impact. Methods: We searched five academic databases (Embase, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, PubMed and Scopus), one grey literature database (HMIC) and two pre-print servers (medRxiv and PsyArXiv) to identify relevant papers published up to 18/09/2023. We also conducted backwards and forwards citation tracking and contacted experts to identify relevant literature. Quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Data were synthesised using a narrative approach. Results: A total of 27 studies were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria. Included studies reported on CCTV/video monitoring (n = 13), Vision-Based Patient Monitoring and Management (VBPMM) (n = 6), Body Worn Cameras (BWCs) (n = 4), GPS electronic monitoring (n = 2) and wearable sensors (n = 2). Twelve papers (44.4%) were rated as low quality, five (18.5%) medium quality, and ten (37.0%) high quality. Five studies (18.5%) declared a conflict of interest. We identified minimal best practice guidance. Qualitative findings indicate that patient, staff and carer perceptions and experiences of surveillance technologies are mixed and complex. Quantitative findings regarding the impact of surveillance on outcomes such as self-harm, violence, aggression, care quality and cost-effectiveness were inconsistent or weak. Discussion: There is currently insufficient evidence to suggest that surveillance technologies in inpatient mental health settings are achieving the outcomes they are employed to achieve, such as improving safety and reducing costs. The studies were generally of low methodological quality, lacked lived experience involvement, and a substantial proportion (18.5%) declared conflicts of interest. Further independent coproduced research is needed to more comprehensively evaluate the impact of surveillance technologies in inpatient settings, including harms and benefits. If surveillance technologies are to be implemented, it will be important to engage all key stakeholders in the development of policies, procedures and best practice guidance to regulate their use, with a particular emphasis on prioritising the perspectives of patients.
